Medusa (Kid Icarus)

Background

Medusa (冥界女王メデューサ Meikai Joō Medyūsa, "Underworld Queen Medusa") is the Goddess of Darkness, and former co-ruler of Angel Land. After her constant torment to humanity, she was banished by Palutena to the depths of the Underworld where she was left to suffer. However, she had managed to gain an aliance with the Underworld Army and began to plot her revenge against the world, leading to the events of the Original Kid Icarus game.

During her first attack on Skyworld, she had successfully defeated Palutena's army and locked away Pit, not knowing that Palutena still had a telepathic connection to Pit. After Pit's escape, successful acquisition of the Three Sacred Treasures, and the defeat of Medusa, she was nothing more than a disembodied consciousness left untouched for 25 years.

After her unexpected return, Medusa once again plotted to defeat Palutena with an unsuccessful invasion, only this time it was revealed who was truly pulling the strings behind Medusa's sudden revival and invasion. Through willpower, Medusa managed to reform her body and save Pit after her rebellion against the true master of the Underworld's manipulation over her, which resulted in Medusa's destruction once again, and is currently deceased in the Kid Icarus universe.

Note: Due to Sakurai being the prime developer for both Kid Icarus Uprising and Super Smash Bros., we can take Pit and co's abilities and dialogue as a secondary canon for Kid Icarus's lore since Palutena's guidance stays relative to Kid Icarus's story and even further fleshed it out.

Note 2: Palutena notes in her smash reveal trailer that anything an angel can do, a goddess can do better. This is further proven by her being responsible for most of Pit's powers and abilities and regularly granting him new and unique powers.

Note 3: Although Viridi hasn't shown the full extent of her capabilities, she states that she can do everything Palutena can and better. While the full claim can be seen as hyperbole, she does show to have a lot of the same capabilities of Palutena and provides Pit and Dark Pit with the same equipment as Palutena, so their powers and blessings shouldn't be any different.
