~ Meta Knight's victory quote in the Smash Bros. series |
Background

Meta Knight is a major character in the Kirby series, appearing in most of the games, the manga, as well as the anime since his debut in Kirby's Adventure in 1993. The intrigue and popularity surrounding Meta Knight within the Kirby fandom largely lies in his enigmatic and solitary yet caring nature and his mysterious yet striking likeness to Kirby himself.
Meta Knight is also the leader of an army of soldiers known as the Meta-Knights, and captains a large airship called Battleship Halberd, which may accompany him into the heat of battle. Despite making his debut in Kirby's Adventure, his true name was not known in North America until Kirby's Avalanche was released in 1995.
Normally the games he appears in usually feature him as a boss for Kirby to fight, but in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and after that game, there have been instances where he is playable in alternate modes, or even teams up with Kirby directly to stop evil from taking over Dream Land. Though most of his actions in the games originate from arguably good intentions, the ways he tries to accomplish his goals are often very extreme and poorly understood by Kirby, which causes them to fight, though they never have any ill-will to one another. He serves as one of the most known characters from the games alongside King Dedede and Waddle Dee. Due to Meta Knight's way of doing things and his oft-hidden intentions, the relationship between Kirby and Meta Knight is unpredictable in nature, ranges from anywhere between being bitter rivals to steadfast allies to one another, and can change at a moment's notice.

Powers and Abilities
Standard Equipment
- Galaxia: Galaxia is a legendary sword, that serves as Meta Knight's primary weapon. The sword itself is golden in appearance, with a blade about as long as Meta Knight himself is tall, with a single rounded or oval ruby set within its hilt. Its handguards point towards the blade, which has a mirror-like, polished appearance compared to the hilt. There are usually four tines along its blade, although there can be anywhere between zero to six depending on artwork, and they range from simple outward pointing spikes to ones which have a slight outwards curve to them, similar to a fiery pattern. The sword known only as Galaxia is a golden blade with a ruby embedded in its hilt, with anywhere from zero to six spikes protruding from its sharp edges. In earlier games, the spikes were absent from Meta Knight's then-unnamed sword. Galaxia is capable of shooting out sword beams and standard sword moves. In Meta Knightmare Ultra, it absorbs the energy of a defeated foe, allowing Meta Knight to use special actions like the Mach Tornado, Meta Quick and Heal. Galaxia is used by Kirby when he uses the Master Copy Ability in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
- Dimensional Cape: Meta Knight's Dimensional Cape allows him to manipulate space, and is a powerful weapon in its own right. His signature cape never received its official name, until relatively recently, much like Galaxia. Meta Knight most commonly wraps it around himself to teleport away. This tends to happen whenever his mask is destroyed and his face is revealed, or when he knows he has been defeated. The cape allows him to warp and teleport short distances, and it can be used to surprise an opponent, catching them off guard by teleporting and attacking from behind. In more recent games, he is seen turning his back to the screen before using it. Meta Knight usually takes it off when fighting Kirby, most likely to avoid hindering his movement.
- Halberd: The Battleship Halberd is Meta Knight's signature airship. The Halberd's size is not stated and varies from game to game. The Halberd is capable of atmospheric and space flight, and is able to take off from underwater. The ship's power comes from the Reactor, and judging by the dialogue at the beginning of Revenge of Meta Knight, the Halberd is dependent on solar energy to some degree. In Kirby Super Star and its remake, some components of the Halberd are shown to be powered by Wheelies.
- Interior: The interior of the ship is filled with long corridors with special trolleys to make travel faster. These trolleys are both present in the games and in the anime. In the anime, the many rooms inside include a kitchen, a jail, a training room, and a massive engine room, suggesting that a far larger crew was expected but the bridge is made to be run by just Meta Knight, Sword Knight and Blade Knight. In the games, bridge command consists of Meta Knight, Captain Vul, and Sailor Waddle Dee. During a certain stage, Kirby, while travelling through the ship's interior, crosses through a massive, open room, via a sort of catwalk, that almost resembles a hangar for smaller air/spacecraft. If the player moves Kirby around or flies him the right way, more of the background is revealed and several small ships can be seen. They resemble fighter jets or perhaps Sirica's spaceship in the anime in shape but have purple bat wings like the Halberd and Meta Knight himself. The purpose of these vessels is never made clear, but it is possible that they serve as smaller, fighter ships, or perhaps escape pods. They are never seen outside this hangar.
- Armament: Its exact armaments and firepower vary from game to game, but in its latest appearances, it has a large cannon beneath its bow, with Combo Cannon at the top part of the ship. All other cannons are smaller than those two, and cover most arcs of the ship. The cannons fire flak shells, beams, and pulsed energy projectiles in the games and managed to shoot down Dyna Blade. In the anime they only fire laser beams, but appear to be vastly more powerful; a single shot is all that's required to down a Destroya. In its appearance in Revenge of Meta Knight, the Halberd carries a complement of a mech (or possibly two) known as Heavy Lobster to defend against threats.
- Combo Cannon: Combo Cannon, called Main Cannon #2 in Kirby Super Star Ultra, is a double-barreled turret located on the front deck of the Halberd. The top gun fires slow moving cannonballs while the bottom gun fires a devastating laser. The Combo Cannon is also equipped with a mechanical arm to grab enemies and drop bombs on them. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl the mechanical arm is used to attack Fox in his Arwing as well as to immobilize the Great Fox. In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, a secondary mechanical arm is used to rotate a crank that controls the upper cannon's movement. All other depictions replaced this secondary arm crank with a gear. This cannon would eventually appear as an item in the team battle mode of Kirby Fighters Deluxe.
- Reactor: The Reactor is the Halberd's main power plant. It is a room full of Wheelies running to power the ship, and its center is dominated by a large structure holding a crystal in place. It is defended by flamethrowers and a laser gun, the latter of which turns out to be its only weakness. In Kirby's Epic Yarn and its remake, it is defended by two flamethrowers instead.
Optional Equipment
- Maxim Tomatoes: Heals all of Kirby's health when eaten. He can keep several of them without being used in his stomach.
- Various Food Items: Heals varying amount of health.
- Action Star:When this item is attacked, one of the following effects occurs at random:
- Everyone's speed increases.
- Causes everyone to explode, dropping Health to one point.
- Decreases the speed and jump of all the other opponents, that will also have a maroon aura around them.
- Puts all opponents to sleep.
- Drops a bomb on all the opponents.
- Drops a random Food item. One may occasionally be a Maxim Tomato.
- Drops three Timed Dynamites
-
Dropping Health to one point
- Dream Rod: When picked up and used Kirby summons one of the following Dream Friends to assist him:
Notable Techniques
-
Dimensional Strike
-
Meta Condor Dive
-
Reflecting projectiles at his opponent
-
Team Attack (Return to Dream Land)
-
Team Attack (Star Allies)
-
Friend Heart
-
-
-
- Hover: Meta Knight flies by flapping his wings, damaging any enemies too close to him.
- Meta Condor Drive: Meta Knight dives diagonally downwards similarly to Wing's attack of the same name, sending out two shockwave projectiles to either side on impact.
- Dimensional Strike: Meta Knight charges up Galaxia with energy, his wings transformed into his cape, and then he disappears before reappearing, performing the Meta Spin Slash. Meta Knight can move while charging. Similar to Dimensional Cape.
- Attack Reflection: An ability he shares with Kirby. While hitting them with any move, Meta Knight has shown to redirect attacks and projectiles at his opponents. The reflected attacks will home onto the aggressor as opposed to being repeating in reverse their original route. At worst, he achieves this by hitting the attacks more than once, although these are arguably just Game Mechanics. This technique either comes from magic or sheer precision, or both.
- Space Jump: A technique most Kirby characters have, Meta Knight transforms into a small ball of energy which turns out to be intangible, he uses this power to mobilize himself or regroup with mates faster.
- Friend Heart: A Friend Heart allows Meta Knight to make friends, and serves as one of the main mechanics of Kirby Star Allies. Before Meta Knight learns of his new ability, Hyness performs a ritual to resurrect Void Termina who is sealed in the Jamba Heart, but fails to perform it correctly, causing it and the Heart Spears containing it to shatter, sending their shards across the galaxy. A pink heart shard, which was dispersed by the Heart Spears, lands on Meta Knight and grants him his new power, which was unbeknownst to him at the time. Meta Knight discovers it in the first stage of the game, Green Gardens, as part of an interactive cutscene that explains the use of Friend Hearts; in this cutscene, Meta Knight turns an enemy, Poppy Bros. Jr., into a friend by tossing a Friend Heart at him. From then on, Meta Knight always has access to Friend Hearts, and can use one by pressing the X button. Meta Knight throws a heart by releasing the button, but can aim the throw before releasing the button, similarly to the aiming system of the Bomb ability; additionally, if Meta Knight is close enough, he will throw a heart directly at the enemy without needing to aim. If a heart touches an enemy that can be befriended (indicated by a small heart symbol above the enemy when Meta Knight is holding a Friend Heart), that enemy will become a friend, of which Meta Knight can have a maximum of three at any time. If Meta Knight uses a Friend Heart to create a friend despite already having three friends in tow, one of the three friends can be replaced with the new friend, or the action can be cancelled altogether, resulting in the enemy transforming into an ability item. Meta Knight can also throw Friend Hearts at Copy Essences, Ability Stars, and ability items to turn them into friends. If a friend throws a Friend Heart at another enemy, they transform into whatever enemy they threw the Friend Heart at. When an enemy is befriended, that enemy will wear their ability hat.
- Team Attack: A technique Meat Knight can access with at least another known ally with similar control over energy, such as every Star Ally. In Return to Dream Land when piggybacking an ally or more, they can briefly charge energy to use a special attack, the more allies charging energy, the more powerful the attack will be. The form of the attack depends on the ally below, which is shooting it. Meta Knight uses his sword to launch a giant beam with the form of Galaxia that can pass through enemies. Meta Knight & all other allies in-game (Kirby, King Dedede, and Bandana Dee) can use their Team Attack to push back and warp the waves of space that were consuming interstellar parts of Another Dimension. In Star Allies when piggybacking an ally or more, they can briefly charge energy to shoot an energy beam (without using Galaxia). The more allies charging energy, the more powerful the attack will be. Given that the partner can be another Meta Knight, this is a power he can do on his own.
- Telekinesis: As of Star Allies and while under the influence of a Jamba Heart, which was amping him, Meta Knight could infuse rocks with energy to control them with gestures, throwing them into certain direction of the battlefield. He could also generate a sphere of energy to send at targets and trap them inside for a while on contact. As of Fighters 2, Meta Knight showed that he could still infuse things with energy to manipulate them, ripping off rocks from the floor. He potentially also maintains his ability to trap targets in energy.
- Grab: Grabs a target and kicks it away ahead or behind him.
Other
Standard Tactics: His regular moves and his special moves are used together. Meta Knight will get right next to the opponent and slash at them, he will keep distance if he wants to use moves such as the tornado. In Star Allies he gains access to use Friend Hearts, a notable appreciation for team work and using Friend Powers.
Weaknesses: Meta Knight prefers chivalrous combat, often refusing to fight his foe if they have no means of fighting back, if they are shown to not be true evil.
Trivia
- Meta Knight's intentions in Kirby's Adventure are unclear. His acts of giving Candy imply he is trying to help Kirby, but his frequent summoning of the Meta-Knights, and being fought as a boss himself, can be seen as contradicting this, actively trying to hinder him instead. However, it could be inferred that Meta Knight is training Kirby for his battle against Nightmare, a theme also present in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime, which has a plot loosely based on Kirby's Adventure. However, in Kirby Super Star, his next main series appearance, he is apparently out for revenge, but it is never clear why. If he was helping Kirby, he probably wouldn't have a reason to enact revenge; if his intentions in Kirby's Adventure were to hinder him just like every other boss, and be loyal to King Dedede, revenge upon losing to Kirby would make sense. However, the plot for Revenge of Meta Knight never actually mentions revenge at all, or Kirby for that matter, only a desire to get rid of Dream Land's lazy lifestyle. Kirby is only involved in the plot by interfering with Meta Knight's plan; once Kirby appears to not be a threat, he is ignored.
- In Kirby's Avalanche, his AI is copied from the Puyo Puyo character Rulue.
- In each game Meta Knight fights Kirby, he always offers him a sword, with the only exceptions being in Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby: Squeak Squad, and Kirby: Planet Robobot, in which he had his own reasons for doing so; In Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby: Planet Robobot, he was being controlled by the game's main antagonist, and in Kirby: Squeak Squad, he was deliberately preventing Dark Nebula's release and thus had to ensure his victory over Kirby (however, a Sword Ability bubble appears in the room before fighting him).
- While his wings appeared purple in the escape sequence during Revenge of Meta Knight, his wings are dark blue in almost all other appearances.
- It is unclear whether or not Meta Knight is right-handed or ambidextrous. While he is generally seen wielding Galaxia in his right hand, there are various other official depictions which have him holding it in his left hand (sprite flipping aside).
- In the English dub of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! he is portrayed with a Spanish accent.
- This may be a reference to Zorro, a similar masked swordsman.
- According to Sword Knight and Blade Knight, Meta Knight is apparently not a good cook in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Cooking Up Trouble.
- In Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Meta Knight is one of the characters least often animated with CGI, the only instance being in Kirby's Duel Role.
- In Kirby: Right Back at Ya! when Meta Knight is asleep, his eyes appear dark orange. However, in the games, when Meta Knight blinks or briefly closes his eyes, his visor becomes pitch black. This is true in some episodes in the anime as well.
- However, when he closes his eyes in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Kirby Battle Royale, and Kirby Star Allies (or otherwise being knocked out), there are two small yellow dashes representing his eyes, rather than his visor being fully blacked out.
- When he falls asleep in Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, his eyes don't change at all.

- In the E3 2006 trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pit fires at Meta Knight using his bow, causing Meta Knight to enshroud himself in his cape. Doing so gives him minor invisibility and Pit's arrow soars straight through Meta Knight, apparently not affecting him. Meta Knight has never been seen utilizing this ability since then, however, this is likely just a visualization of how his Dimensional Cape works.
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it can be observed that Meta Knight's visor is not pitch black. When standing in a certain way, it is possible to see blue coloring around his yellow eyes.
- Meta Knight's battle theme from Kirby Super Star was remixed heavily for the battle against the Sphere Doomers in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

- In a released concept art, an unknown knight was shown. Since this artwork was in Meta Knight’s section, many have presumed it to be an early Meta Knight design. However, in a Nintendo Dream magazine interview with Shinya Kumazaki, he confirmed that the design was originally for an entirely different knight that would have appeared in the cancelled Kirby GCN.[2] This design would later be used for Morpho Knight in Kirby Star Allies, except with a different sword.

- Meta Knight's mask makes a cameo appearance as a purchasable hat in the Nintendo 3DS built-in game StreetPass Mii Plaza. A version of this mask missing Meta Knight's shoulder pauldrons can be worn by Mii Fighters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
- Two of Meta Knight's palette swaps in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U resemble Galacta Knight and Dark Meta Knight.
- In his amiibo description on the Nintendo website, it is stated that his relation to Kirby is unknown, which implies that there may or may not be one at all.
- Meta Knight's circumstances in Kirby: Planet Robobot parallel King Dedede's in Kirby Triple Deluxe, as both were kidnapped by the enemy before eventually being controlled to fight Kirby, but are defeated and have their masks shattered. They then assist Kirby to get his Final Weapon to fight the true antagonist, with a little help from a traitor of the antagonist's side.
- They go on their own adventures, battle with improved bosses, and also fight a knight as the final boss.
- King Dedede bears no involvement to Kirby: Planet Robobot’s main story, in the same way Meta Knight had no bearing on Kirby: Triple Deluxe’s main story. Instead, doppelgängers of them fill their absence as bosses.
- Both also make physical appearances in cutscenes, Meta Knight appearing in Kirby: Triple Deluxe’s 100% completion cutscene, and King Dedede in Kirby: Planet Robobot’s opening and ending story cutscenes.
- As of Kirby: Planet Robobot, Meta Knight's eyes were changed from white to yellow, and his blush was removed entirely.
- Meta Knight's appearance in the Story Mode for Kirby Battle Royale has him viewing the situation from above at a remote location, with his cape wrapped around him; this role may be a reference to Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he generally observes the situation from a remote area while wrapped in his cape.
- In Kirby Star Allies, if the player chooses to float up onto the ledge that Meta Knight is standing on or attack him with a Copy Ability before the battle begins, he'll jump off the ledge and start the battle himself by kicking away the sword he offered rather than doing his regular pose, seemingly out of frustration.
- Additionally, should the player decide to just sit there and do nothing, Meta Knight will begin whistling bits of his own battle theme for a while before jumping down to kick the sword away and initiate the fight.
- This makes him the only boss to have an entirely different splash screen, while others like Void Termina only have the title changed, or has alternative palette while retaining the same pose.
- In Kirby Star Allies, Meta Knight's mask appears as one of the symbols on Void Termina's body.
- According to a parfait dessert item on the Kirby Café menu, Meta Knight secretly indulges in a parfait every night. This, however, is not shown in the games.
- In The Subspace Emissary, not counting Mario and Donkey Kong (who have been both a protagonist and a villain), Meta Knight is the only villain fighter to not play a villainous role.
- Stealing Galaxia from Meta Knight during his fight in Kirby and the Forgotten Land will result in him pulling out the sword he wielded in Kirby's Adventure.
