“ | Strong willed and hates anything dishonest. She is a calm woman and kind towards everyone. She was kidnapped and taken to the demon castle by Shaft. Dracula detected her relationship with Richter, and he decided to use her as a countermeasure against Richter by transforming her into a vampire. | „ |

“ | Annette transformed into a wicked vampire by Dracula. Her sense of self has eroded, and her expression is devoid of her former self. She wields a trident manifested from her wickedness and is a faithful follower of Dracula. | „ |

Background
Annette is a supporting character in the Castlevania series and the girlfriend of Richter Belmont. She first appeared in the 1993 NEC PC Engine CD game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and has reprised this role in several titles, including Castlevania: Dracula X, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, CR Pachinko Akumajō Dracula, and Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls.
In certain games, depending on the player's actions during their journey, Annette can also serve as a boss encounter.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Annette’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood During his quest, Richter encountered and rescued Maria Renard, a young girl who happened to know Annette and recognized Richter from her stories about him. Together, they pressed on toward the castle. Meanwhile, Annette was separated from the other prisoners and taken to the castle's clocktower, seemingly because Dracula had taken a particular interest in her. In her chamber, Dracula approached Annette and offered her eternal life and a place by his side in his reign of terror. Annette, refusing to succumb, brandished a concealed knife and declared she would rather end her life than become a monster. At that moment, Shaft interrupted to inform Dracula of intruders in the castle, prompting the Count to depart. Richter eventually reached the clocktower and freed Annette. After ensuring she was unharmed, Richter embraced her and assured her that the path back to safety was clear. Despite Annette’s pleas for them to escape together, Richter explained that he had to fulfill his duty as a Belmont by confronting Dracula, as his destiny called him to this mission. Accepting his resolve, Annette departed for the village, leaving Richter to continue his battle against the Lord of Darkness. Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles Annette is held prisoner in a different location within the clocktower, which is a departure from the original game. The previous location, which was a dead end containing a Lesser Vampire, is now replaced with a new area. To rescue Annette, the player must first free both Iris and Tera, who are also imprisoned in the castle, before being able to reach Annette's new prison and save her. This change adds complexity to the rescue sequence, requiring additional effort before Annette can be freed. Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls In her vampire form, Annette attacks the heroes using her moveset from The Dracula X Chronicles. After being defeated, she retreats, vowing to make Richter hers, even if it means doing so against his will. Later in the chapter, Annette reappears in her human form alongside Carmilla during the boss fight. In the first phase of the battle, she utilizes a moveset similar to Laura's, filling the same role she did in the original game. In the second phase, she transforms back into her Lesser Vampire form. After Carmilla is defeated by Maria and Richter, Annette is freed from Carmilla's influence and expresses deep remorse for her actions. She apologizes for hurting Richter and Maria and asks for their forgiveness. Richter reassures her that he's glad to have saved her, and Annette wishes him safety as he continues his mission. |
Personality
- Strong-Willed and Defiant: Annette is a determined and strong-willed individual who dislikes anything unfair, a trait she shares with Richter. She stands her ground in difficult situations, even showing defiance when confronted by Dracula. Her resolve is evident when she threatens to take her own life rather than succumb to Dracula's transformation, demonstrating her courage and unwillingness to become a monster.
- Caring and Protective: Annette is deeply kind-hearted and caring toward others. She is especially protective of those she loves, such as Richter and Maria. After being rescued by Richter, she expresses concern for his safety, fearing for his well-being as he plans to confront Dracula. She also shows a protective side toward Maria, admonishing Richter for allowing the young girl to join the fight and fearing for her safety when she faces monsters.
- Tragic Transformation and Possessiveness: Annette’s transformation into a vampire marks a tragic shift in her personality. The kind, caring woman is replaced by a sadistic, cruel version of herself who takes pleasure in her newfound power. She grows increasingly possessive of Richter, desiring to turn him into a vampire to keep him by her side forever, even against his will. Her love for him becomes twisted, and she openly praises Dracula for granting her strength, fully embracing her new, darker persona.
- Twisted Allegiance and Cruelty: As a vampire, Annette adopts a more evil and cruel attitude, mocking and taunting her enemies, including Maria and Richter. She revels in the power bestowed upon her by Dracula, calling her new existence "wonderful" and fully pledging her allegiance to him. Her affection for Richter is warped into an obsessive desire to make him a vampire like herself, highlighting her loss of the compassionate nature she once held.
Appearance
- Looks:
Annette is initially depicted with long, flowing violet hair and long bangs that frame her face. Her eyes are a striking turquoise, complementing her vibrant hair color. In her first appearance in Rondo of Blood, she wears a yellow-orange dress with a frilled collar and a green skirt. Her strong-willed nature is reflected in her appearance, with her clothing adding to her determination and sense of resolve. As described in the instruction booklet, she shares these traits with Richter, but also possesses a kind and caring personality, making her a character of both strength and empathy.
- Regular Clothes:
In Rondo of Blood, Annette's outfit consists of a yellow-orange dress paired with a green skirt, reflecting her warm and caring personality. The frilled collar adds a delicate touch, but the overall design maintains her strong-willed nature. The vivid colors of her attire are indicative of her spirited nature and firm resolve against injustice.
- Special Clothes:
When Annette is transformed into a vampire, her attire changes dramatically. She wears a revealing black corset and matching bottoms, which accentuate her vampiric persona. Her red fingerless opera gloves and thigh-high boots complete the outfit, while her hair is let down to reveal a more seductive and dangerous aura. Her once turquoise eyes are now red, and bat wings sprout from her back, symbolizing her full transformation into a creature of the night. Her cross necklace is replaced with a red crystal on a black lace collar, further emphasizing her allegiance to Dracula. As a vampire, Annette’s attire and behavior reflect her complete embrace of evil and cruelty, a stark contrast to her original gentle nature.
- Redesigns and Alterations:
In Dracula X, Annette was reimagined by Akihiro Yamada, who portrayed her with blonde hair tied into a bow and a more revealing green dress. The green bustier with floral patterns now exposes more of her shoulders, giving her a more refined yet seductive appearance.
In The Dracula X Chronicles, she was redesigned once again, this time by Ayami Kojima, maintaining aspects of the Dracula X design but with more intricate details. Her blonde hair is styled in an updo bun with long bangs, and her eyes are now green. She wears a green dress with frills, a green bustier that reveals more of her shoulders, and white silk at the bottom portion of her dress. A cross necklace completes her look, though her faith in Richter and her protective nature toward Maria remain central to her character. After being rescued by Richter, she expresses concern for Maria’s safety, displaying a caring attitude despite her dire circumstances.
In her vampire form, Annette's appearance shifts dramatically, embracing a seductive, sinister look. The black corset and red accents are replaced with a more revealing red and black corset, and she dons lace cuffs on her bare feet instead of the previous thigh-high boots. Her physical form is more voluptuous, accentuating her transformation into a darker, more powerful version of herself. These changes highlight her transition from the innocent, kind-hearted woman she once was to a more dangerous and possessive figure.
- Personality Reflection in Appearance:
Her appearance shifts in line with her personality changes. As a human, Annette is warm-hearted, strong-willed, and protective of her loved ones, particularly Maria and Richter. However, upon her transformation into a vampire, her once-gentle demeanor is replaced with cruelty and possessiveness. She now relishes in her new vampiric abilities, taking pleasure in tormenting others, including Maria and Richter. Annette even refers to Dracula with reverence, acknowledging the power he has granted her. Her twisted love for Richter is manifested in her desire to turn him into a vampire, forcing him into a bond that would ensure they are together forever, regardless of his wishes.

Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[47]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[48], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[49]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[50]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[51]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[52], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[53], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[54], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[55]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[56]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[57], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[58]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[59]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[60]. Equipment
- Bats: A large flock of bats surround her, where she naturally flies around with them.
Notable Techniques
- Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[142] regenerate[143], from any kind[144] of damage due to it absorbing blood[145].
- Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
- Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
- Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.
- Bat Company: Annette wields a large flock of bats to attack with her, dealing various different flying formation attacks.
Other
Standard Tactics: Annette wields a large flock of bats to attack with her, dealing various different flying formation attacks. She will also use the bats to shield herself from attacks.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[146]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[147], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[148]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[149].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[150]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[151]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[152]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[153]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[154]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[155]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[156]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[157].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[158]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[159], a knight who has natural holy powers[160]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[161]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[162].
- While vampires have some weakness to sunlight and can burn overtime in them[163], higher tier vampires[164], can stand out in the sunlight just fine[165] without being weakened. It should also be noted even with Dhamphir's like Alucard, in original lore, he was considered a full vampire yet could stand out in the sunlight perfectly fine.
- The statistics of this profile are mainly covering her in her vampire form as this is the only time she actually fights or has any notable statistics.
Trivia
- In Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, if Annette is rescued, the Lesser Vampire is moved from Stage 7 (replaced with Shaft's Ghost) to Stage 5', where she serves as the alternate boss and is not the vampirized Annette, but merely a generic female vampire. It's possible this vampiress may be taking Annette's form in an attempt to delude Richter (as the Succubus did in Symphony of the Night by assuming Lisa's form to attack Alucard).
- Coincidentally, both Annette/Lesser Vampire and the Succubus/Lisa shared the same English voice actress, Jessica Straus.
- Her alternate appearance in the Gekkan PC Engine strategy guide may be the basis or inspiration for her appearance in Dracula X and The Dracula X Chronicles.
- Her name is spelled "Annet" in the North American instruction booklet of Castlevania: Dracula X[166].
- Her name also previously appeared as "Annet" in the Gekkan PC Engine guide for Rondo of Blood, hinting both being cases of mistranslation.
- Annette being possessed by Carmilla in Grimoire of Souls while in Lesser Vampire form is a subtle reference to Dracula X, where Annet was transformed into Carmilla if the player failed to rescue her, which partly inspired the plot point regarding Annette being transformed into a Lesser Vampire under similar circumstances in Rondo of Blood's remake, The Dracula X Chronicles.
- On a similar note, her first form used the same moveset as Laura in Rondo of Blood and The Dracula X Chronicles.
- In Grimoire of Souls, Annette's Lesser Vampire form is a mini-boss battle in level 3-3 of Chapter 6. Similar to the fight with Death early in the game, this boss fight can only occur once per player profile, and she will not appear at this location on subsequent playthroughs, only re-appearing during the Carmilla boss fight.

- ↑ WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?
KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea. - ↑ Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Prologue Stage 4
