In the game, players take on the role of Hazel as she journeys through a magical reimagining of the American Deep South, where she must face supernatural forces inspired by regional folklore.

As a Weaver, she gains the power to confront dark beings known as Haints and uncover the secrets hidden within her family's troubled legacy. The story begins in the town of Prospero, Hazel's hometown, which has been left in ruins after a powerful hurricane. Amid the wreckage, Hazel uncovers her identity as a "Weaver"—a rare individual with the ability to repair and reshape the spiritual threads that bind reality together. As a Weaver, she gains the power to confront dark beings known as Haints and uncover the secrets hidden within her family's troubled legacy. Through this, Hazel is drawn into a larger conflict that challenges both her abilities and her understanding of the world around her.
Hazel learns from a giant Catfish that she is a "Weaver," a person with the power to mend the fabric of reality itself using the Strands. She travels down the river, fighting various monsters born of twisted human and animal spirits, which she heals by absorbing their negative emotions and unraveling their "knots." Eventually, Hazel finds the remnants of her home but no trace of Lacey, except for a piece of red yarn. The Catfish warns that Lacey has likely been taken by "Huggin' Molly," a powerful supernatural being. Hazel follows a trail of dark family secrets, learning about the tragic death of her uncle Trey and uncovering Bunny’s obsession with resurrecting the dead. Hazel confronts Molly, only to discover that Lacey and Molly were working together to save abused children. However, Bunny arrives in desperation, kills Molly, and takes her heart in an attempt to resurrect her deceased sister Cherie. In the chaos, Bunny pushes Hazel off a cliff, seemingly killing her. In her near-death state, Hazel meets Roux, a dark spirit who reveals that Lacey’s soul is trapped in Kooshma’s realm, the King of Dreams and Nightmares. With Roux’s assistance, Hazel rescues Lacey’s soul and returns to the human world, where she confronts Bunny once more. Bunny, now devastated by her failed attempts to bring Cherie back, is given an enchanted hairbrush by Hazel. Roux offers Bunny an escape to an illusory world where she can live out her dream of raising Cherie. With Bunny gone, Hazel embraces her role as a Weaver, safeguarding her town from supernatural threats. |
Appearance
- General Description:
Hazel is a teenage girl with a lean build and medium height. She has a dark complexion and is most often seen with her hair styled in neat, medium-length braids that fall slightly past her shoulders. Her typical attire consists of casual streetwear, marked by a yellow sleeveless shirt and worn jeans. She tends to wrap her jacket around her waist rather than wearing it, contributing to a laid-back and somewhat practical look.
- Facial Features:
Hazel has a strong, angular facial structure with a noticeable jawline and high, well-defined cheekbones. Her nose is straight and slightly broad, and her lips are full but usually kept in a neutral expression. Her eyes are narrow and dark-colored, and her eyebrows are thick but shaped cleanly, adding to her sharper appearance. While she doesn't wear noticeable makeup, her facial features give her a confident and alert presence.
- Usual Outfit:
Hazel wears a bright yellow sleeveless shirt that loosely fits around her frame. The shirt is plain in design, lacking visible logos or graphics, but she accessorizes it with a simple necklace that hangs at mid-chest level. Her jeans are light blue, visibly worn, and ripped at the knees and thighs, suggesting either frequent use or a deliberate style choice. Rather than wearing her jacket, she ties it around her waist, with the sleeves knotted in the front. Her footwear is typically a pair of sneakers or other flat, durable shoes suited for walking or casual activity.
Alternate Outfit: Due to her usual outfit being stuck in pig feces, Bunny gave her a new outfit[1]. Hazel starts wearing a more stylized outfit consisting of a white puff-sleeved blouse with a lace-trimmed neckline beneath a fitted black corset-like garment. Her arms are wrapped with long gloves or bandages that reach the upper arms, and she carries a staff or hook-like weapon strapped to her back. Her pants are dark and paired with patterned tights that extend into leather ankle boots. The outfit includes floral detailing and layered cloth elements that suggest a more ceremonial or combat-oriented look, contrasting with her everyday attire.
Personality
- Tattoo Artist: Hazel is a natural tattoo artist[2], writing ideas for new ones on her wall, showing she has great passion for it.
Relationships
Lacey Winston[5]
Hazel has lived with her mother all her life in Prospero[6]. Hazel notes if one interacts with the picture of a kid Hazel and her dad of how things got tense with her mom the last time Hazel visited her dad at the mausoleum[7]. Hazel notes, if one interacts with the picture of a kid Hazel being held by her mom, about how that was the day Lacey threw up on Hazel after getting off the Wacky Whirl, where Hazel almost passed out from laughing so hard before saying how she wished Lacey still had that kind of time for her[8]. Lacey gave Hazel a doll-like stuffed creature when Hazel asked her for a doll[9].
When Lacey enters the house during the flood, Hazel notes how she was in the house all alone with Lacey apologizing because the shelter had a leak in the rooft nad then she had to drive folks back and forth to Jolene's to ride out the storm[10].
Despite this, they both show a good relationship with each other[11]. Dancing together to a little song they've both made[12].
However, they show to still argue with each other as Hazel seems to not like how Lacey helps out everyone else more then her own daughter and kin[13].
Lacey refers to Hazel as her little "bug" whom she loves deeply and is frustrated that her job takes time away from Hazel[14].
Through finding things like her mom's work binder she starts to learn how much her mom was affected from work[15].
Through looking through another connection piece, she learns her mom wanted to make a better place not for herself but for Hazel[16].
Hazel finally finds her mom, being stuck in a timeless loop from Kooshma's domain and she fights against Kooshma himself to get her out[17]. Her mom helps by using her bottle to seal Kooshama[18]. Defeating Kooshma allowed her mom to return back to Prospero.
Upon returning back she greets and embraces her mom, before telling her she has one last task to do alone, and it is to stop Bunny[19]. Her mom tells her to promise that she'll come back to her and she promises[20].
After she dealt with Bunny, she was reading her entire story to Crouton, before saying she needs to head out to meet her mom and Laurent for dinner[21].
Beaux
Beaux is a former collegiate football player that checks in on Mrs. Pearle and Lacey, viewing Hazel like a little sister[22].
Hazel checked on him to make sure he was alright during the storm[23].
Hazel later finds Beaux sleeping on a bench and thanks him for getting Mrs. Pearle to safety[24].
Mrs. Pearle
Hazel checked on her to make sure she was alright during the storm[25]. Mrs. Pearle asks her to come in for a second to have some of gizzards where they have a conversation about her mom[26]. It's noted in her character lore that she thinks of lacey and Hazel as family, especially after the death of her husband[27].
Hazel finds Mrs. Pearle again at the church, asking her any news on her mom but they didn't find her, she goes off to keep looking with Mrs. Pearle and Jolene trying to deter her but she refuses[28].
Hazel later finds Beaux sleeping on a bench and thanks him for getting Mrs. Pearle to safety[29].
Bunny
Bunny is Hazel's grandmother who has an estranged relationship with Lacey, Hazel's mother[30]. Hazel tries to go to help to ask for help for her mom[31]. Telling her servant that Hazel is her only grandchild so is glad to help[32].
Bunny finds Hazel later in her other home, trying to find clues on how to find Huggin' Molly[33]. Bunny offers for them to have tea to discuss it, while also changing Molly out of her ruined clothes[34]. She tells her who to talk to in order to find more clues on Huggin' Molly's whereabouts[35].
Though Hazel reveals to the Catfish that she doesn't trust Bunny[36]. Later after Hazel fights Huggin' Molly she learns that Bunny was using her to get to Huggin' Molly so that she could kill her and resurrect her daughter[37].
Hazel confronts Bunny once last time in her mansion as she is the cause of all the stigma, telling Bunny that she has committed too many crimes and she must right her wrongs, giving her a brush and telling her that she can go into the Tavern of The Tapestry to see her daughter within an illusion, after some argument Bunny complies and goes with Roux[38].

Other
Standard Tactics: Hazel utilizes her hooks in combats along with several of her Weaver spells and her familiar Crouton.
Weaknesses
- Unique Weaknesses: Hazel refuses to give up looking for her mom, with Jolene saying that Hazel is stubborn, just like her mama[216]. She refuses to take the Catfish's advice in not trusting Bunny as she believed Bunny was helping her save her mom when in reality Bunny was just using her.
- Spell Weaknesses: When used in combat, there is a cooldown period that can be accelerated through unraveling enemies for spell usage[217].
- Weaver Weaknesses: Weavers cannot use their gifts to mend their own wounds, they must rely on the kindness of others for that[218].
Trivia
- Hazel makes comments indicating that she was apart of the track team while in Highschool[219].
- Hazel noted that she struggled at finishing her shifts at her jobs[220].
- Hazel loves to run, saying it feels like flying down straight[221].
- Hazel speaks in AAVE (African-American Vernacular English), likely due to being raised in the Bayou of Louisiana. While one could also call it ebonics, as she uses the term "ain't" when angered[222], and sometimes in casual conversation[223]. However, Ebonics as a whole refers to Gullah, to Black Canadian English, to Dominican Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, Jamaican Patwa, and Brazilian Portuguese, among others. The term also has negative connotations within the African American community due to it being treated as a less intelligent form of speech due to it using words like "ain't", and the speech patterns being "broken, bad, and defective" thus it is more accurate to say Hazel uses AAVE as her speech is easily understandable and is not "broken, bad, and defective".
- Due to Hazel's last name being Flood, which is the last name of Bunny Flood while her mom's name is Lacey Winston, this likely means Lacey and her dad never married and she simply took her dad's last name when she was born.

Codex Statistics Questions
Q: Couldn't Hazel get building level?
A: Building level is far too high in terms of statistics as she's clearly not equal to Two Toed Tom, needing to chip his wound, a trauma formed directly from him that she can harm, in order to defeat him and she cannot harm his regular body, along with this his attacks are big enough that she needs to actively avoid them. There are also scenes of her being unable to do things that would make no sense if her strength were at the potency of Building level.
