God-Man despite being repeatedly noted to be an omnipotent being with super powers, still has a God-God Man that's above him.

Background

Pseudo-Omnipotence is a state where a character is presented as omnipotent within the context of their story. Within the narrative, they appear to have unlimited power, able to accomplish anything and overcome any obstacle. However, unlike true omnipotence, something used for characters at 1-Ω, Pseudo-Omnipotence is contextual and normally has issues that make it not reach 1-Ω. The character is omnipotent relative to their setting, their cosmology, and the scope of their story. This ability is normally for characters at Unknown-A tiering due to their god status.

Characters with Pseudo-Omnipotence are typically intended by their authors to be the supreme authority within their verse. They may be gods, creators, or beings that transcend all other entities in their setting. Their power is functionally unlimited within the story's framework, and they are treated as such by the narrative. However, their capabilities are often contradicted, normally a being surpasses them, they are defeated, they showcase a limitation, or one of the multiple issues that make them not fit the criteria.

Also Called

  • Contextual Omnipotence
  • Narrative Omnipotence
  • Setting-Limited Omnipotence
  • Apparent Omnipotence

Key Characteristics

  • The character is presented as having unlimited power within their setting
  • The narrative treats them as supreme and unchallengeable
  • Their power is not measured or quantified, only demonstrated
  • They are the ultimate authority within their story's cosmology
  • Their limitations, if any, are narrative rather than power-based

Example Variations

  • Cosmic Pseudo-Omnipotence: The character is supreme within their specific cosmology or multiverse, but that cosmology itself may be limited in scope.
  • Narrative Pseudo-Omnipotence: The character functions as the ultimate authority within their story, but only within the boundaries of that narrative.
  • Theological Pseudo-Omnipotence: The character is a god figure within their setting, presented as all-powerful to the inhabitants of that world.

Limitations

  • They do not fit the criteria.
  • They fall under the omnipotence paradox, thus if they create a rock that even they cannot lift, they cannot lift it or they cannot defeat illogical contradictions.

Known Users

  • YHVH (Megami Tensei): YHVH is the depiction of the Abrahamic god, thus he should be omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. However, in the context of Megami Tensei YHVH instead uses the power of humanity's observation to put himself at this level rather then naturally being so. On top of this, he can be defeated through the beliefs and observation of humanity and Messiahs, debasing all of his truths.

Important Note

Pseudo-Omnipotence should not be used or brought up in versus threads.

By its nature, the ability is contextual and narrative-based. There is no meaningful way to quantify or compare it against other characters or abilities. The character is omnipotent within their story, that is the extent of what can be said about the ability. Attempting to use Pseudo-Omnipotence as a debating point is inherently flawed because the ability is not defined by measurable capabilities, but by narrative presentation.
