Yukari Yakumo (八雲 紫 Yakumo Yukari) is a recurring character in the Touhou Project series and a youkai sage living in Gensokyo. She possesses the power to manipulate boundaries and was one of the key figures involved in establishing Gensokyo's borders, as well as helping to maintain its society. She made her debut as the Phantasm Stage boss in Perfect Cherry Blossom and has since appeared as a playable character in several titles, beginning with Immaterial and Missing Power. Yukari also provides support to Reimu during the events of Imperishable Night and can serve as a partner in Subterranean Animism. The story A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years is told from Yukari's perspective during the events of Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

Yukari's full name is Yakumo Yukari (八雲 紫). The characters for Yakumo (八雲) translate literally to "eight clouds," though they can also carry the broader meaning of "countless clouds." Her given name, Yukari (紫), simply means "purple" or "violet." In everyday Japanese, these two colors are often treated as the same. Yukari is also a real given name in Japan, though it is usually written with different characters such as ゆかり, 由香里, or 友加里, rather than 紫.
According to chapter 26 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Yukari chose this name for herself and did not have it 1,200 years ago.
All members of the Yakumo family are named after colors. The frequencies and energies associated with these colors correspond to their relative power levels: Chen (orange) is the weakest, followed by Ran Yakumo (blue), with Yukari (violet) being the strongest. Violet light has the highest energy in the visible spectrum and also marks the boundary between visible light and invisible ultraviolet light. Red light, which is associated with Remilia Scarlet and Reimu Hakurei, represents the other boundary. Appropriately, when Reimu and Yukari team up in Imperishable Night, they are referred to as the "Boundary Team." Their colors form the two boundaries between visible and invisible light. Additionally, the word 縁, also pronounced "yukari," is sometimes used to mean "border" or "edge."
Occasionally, after rainfall, a double rainbow appears. The primary rainbow has red on top and violet on the bottom, while the secondary, fainter rainbow above it has the colors reversed, with violet on top and red on the bottom. This means that the outer edges of a rainbow are violet, making violet the boundary between the sky and the rainbow. This reinforces the idea that Yukari's given name symbolizes boundaries.
In Japan and many other cultures, purple and violet have historically been seen as noble colors, often associated with wealth and high status. This fits well with Yukari's position in Gensokyo. However, ZUN mentioned in Who's Who of Humans & Youkai in Gensokyo that this was simply a continuation of the red theme from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, followed by Chen's orange and Ran's blue.
Some fans have noted that Yukari's surname, Yakumo, may be taken from the writer Lafcadio Hearn, who became a naturalized Japanese citizen and took the name Koizumi Yakumo (小泉 八雲). The characters 八雲 can also be read as "Haun." When fans asked about a possible connection between Yukari and Maribel Hearn during a high school open lecture, ZUN brought up Lafcadio Hearn but did not elaborate. Still, his response seemed to suggest a connection between the two.
Yakumo also appears in one of the earliest poems written in what would become the Japanese tanka form:
"Yakumo tatsu / Izumo yagegaki / Tsuma-gomini / Yaegaki tsukuro / Sono yaegaki wo"
This poem is attributed to the god Susanoo. A common English translation reads:
"Eightfold rising clouds / Build an eightfold fence / An eightfold Izumo fence / Wherein to keep my bride-- / Oh! splendid eightfold fence"
Interpretations of the poem's meaning vary. Yukari's name is analyzed in detail in chapter 26 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia by Rinnosuke Morichika. However, Rinnosuke suggests at the end that there may be even more meanings hidden within it.
General Description: Yukari is a figure with long blonde hair. Her eye color varies between appearances: purple in Perfect Cherry Blossom, dark golden in Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody. She carries a pink lace parasol and a paper fan and rides on a red gap.
Facial Features: She has long blonde hair. Ribbons are tied on her accessories and the tips of her hair in some appearances. A pale pink mob cap with a thin red ribbon is worn on her head.
Clothing/Outfit:
Special Features: The tabard features two trigrams on the front. The top trigram (☱) is "dui" or "tui" (open), associated with west and lake/marsh. The bottom trigram (☷) is "kūn" (field), associated with southwest and earth, as well as Yoni (divine passage). Together in that order, they form the hexagram "Ts'ui," meaning "clustering," "gathering together," and "finished." This hexagram signifies gathering together to persevere towards a destination and great wisdom necessary for leadership.
Yukari's ability to traverse Gensokyo via her gaps has brought her into contact with a wide array of youkai and humans over the years. Among Gensokyo's inhabitants, she is commonly referred to as the "gap youkai" (すきま妖怪) whenever she becomes the subject of conversation.
Yukari has long maintained a close connection to the shrine maidens of the Hakurei lineage—her very name carries implications of authority over Gensokyo's shrine maidens. Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame first formally encountered Yukari when she enlisted their aid in repairing the border between Gensokyo and the Netherworld during the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom. However, Yukari gave the impression that she was already acquainted with both of them to some degree. With Marisa, this familiarity manifested as a prank—keeping her awake well past her usual bedtime.
Yukari frequently visits Reimu at the Hakurei Shrine and drops by Marisa's home without warning, a habit Marisa complains about in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, specifically noting that Yukari never uses the door. Her visits include stealing food from Reimu (as documented in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense), staying at the shrine for over a month during winter (in Curiosities of Lotus Asia), and appearing among the youkai Reimu complains about in Wild and Horned Hermit. Some visits take on a more philosophical tone, such as in Seasonal Dream Vision or when she gives Reimu out-of-season taro roots from the Outside World in Strange and Bright Nature Deity, prompting her to reflect on their significance.
As an employer, Yukari has assigned Reimu multiple missions, including those in Subterranean Animism, Imperishable Night, and Silent Sinner in Blue. A brief remark during the first stage of Imperishable Night indicates that she compensates Reimu for her efforts.
As a mentor, Yukari frequently instructs Reimu not only about Gensokyo itself—as seen multiple times in Oriental Sacred Place—but also about the proper execution of her shrine maiden duties. She confronts Reimu when she deliberately damages the barrier in Curiosities of Lotus Asia, reminds her of her youkai-extermination responsibilities in Imperishable Night's Extra stage, and puts her through rigorous training in preparation for Silent Sinner in Blue—a rarity, according to Curiosities of Lotus Asia. This training included attacking Reimu at unannounced moments.
Yukari also appears to look after Reimu in more subtle ways, such as secretly slipping yen donations into the shrine's offering box when Reimu is not looking, as shown in Chapter 23 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity. Like most characters, Reimu finds Yukari thoroughly exasperating. Yukari takes no offense, responding to Reimu's complaints with joking remarks like "How rude!" or "What a greeting!" In Seasonal Dream Vision, Marisa grew irritated by one of Yukari's unannounced visits, though Yukari's true motive was simply curiosity about Marisa's thoughts on the flower incident. Many of her visits to Marisa likely stem from similar amusement.
Ran is Yukari's primary shikigami, a nine-tailed fox who received her current name and identity as part of their contract. An interview in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red suggests that Ran entered the arrangement for the power it offered, and despite losing her freedom, she remains quite satisfied with the outcome. Ran was not yet born at the time of the Genso-Lunar War, so she must have become Yukari's shikigami sometime afterward.
Yukari maintains a strictly functional relationship with Ran, analogous to that of a user and a computer in the Outside World. She insists that Ran is not a fox but a tool to be utilized. In Chapter Five of Cage in Lunatic Runagate, Yukari's internal monologue refers to Ran using computer terminology such as "programming" and "debugging." While Ran is more advanced than an ordinary computer, Yukari occasionally attempts philosophical discussions with her, though she typically receives uninspired responses involving numbers and calculations. Yukari holds genuine affection for Ran—but in the manner one might love a favored tool.
Ran often acts independently of Yukari's orders, sometimes forgetting her status as a shikigami. This tendency is partly unavoidable, as Yukari spends much of her time sleeping. When this happens, Yukari physically disciplines Ran—typically by striking her with her umbrella. From Yukari's perspective, using a tool properly and maintaining it through discipline demonstrates care for one's shikigami. Ran accepts this treatment and appears content with the arrangement. She also shows concern for her master, attempting to offer encouragement after the failure of the second Genso-Lunar War. Still, she readily admits that Yukari can be annoying, often growing frustrated with her cryptic speech and secrecy.
Ran has her own shikigami named Chen. As Ran's shikigami, Chen follows the will of both Ran and Yukari, though her shikigami "programming" is less fully integrated with her original personality than Ran's is—and she is implied to be quite a handful as a result. Unlike Ran, Yukari views Chen as both Ran's shikigami and a pet, remarking in Subterranean Animism: "I wonder where our cat went off to? It's such a pain when she just suddenly disappears like that. I wish you'd take care to program your own familiar properly. Without any bugs."
Notably, Chen is never referred to as "Chen Yakumo," even when her name appears alongside "Ran Yakumo" in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense.
Zenki and Goki are two crows that Yukari and Ran employ as shikigami. The names may be temporary designations, as one is killed by Watatsuki no Toyohime, yet three additional crows appear as spies for Yukari later in Chapter 20 of Silent Sinner in Blue.
Yukari and Yuyuko have been friends since Yuyuko's lifetime over a thousand years ago, and their friendship continued after Yuyuko became a ghost. Notably, this bond does not extend to Yukari's shikigami Ran—Yuyuko has no qualms about others harming her.
Yuyuko appears to be the only individual who truly comprehends Yukari. Yukari recognizes this and often assumes that Yuyuko understands her intentions without explanation, as seen in their interactions and victory quotes. However, they do not always think alike, and Yuyuko occasionally surprises her. The two are willing to act on each other's requests simply because they asked.
Yukari believed the Saigyou Ayakashi had consumed too many human lives. She was always aware that Yuyuko's body was sealing it, and it is possible that Yukari herself was the one who used Yuyuko's body to perform the sealing.
As Yuyuko's servant, Youmu occasionally receives lessons and advice from Yukari, such as in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
Yukari and Suika were friends before the oni retreated underground, though the circumstances of their meeting remain unknown. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense Yuyuko and Suika are the two youkai noted to be people Yukari is friends with. Yukari looks out for Suika in Immaterial and Missing Power, and Suika reciprocates by performing favors for her, such as rebuilding the Hakurei Shrine in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody or assisting with investigations into the underground. The two engage in danmaku battles with each other, though they had not done so in some time prior to Scarlet Weather Rhapsody. In Oriental Sacred Place Chapter 12, they are seen together at the Hakurei Shrine's New Year's Festival.
Suika becomes annoyed with Yukari's "dirty tricks" but does not voice more than mild complaints about them. She may be privy to some of Yukari's secrets, having referred to Yukari's existence as "fraudulent" in Immaterial and Missing Power and noted that it was rare to see her "on this side of the world" in broad daylight.
Yuugi is one of the oni—alongside Suika, presumably—with whom Yukari struck a deal. In exchange for keeping the evil spirits of Old Hell under control, Yukari promised them a territory in the Underworld and guaranteed that surface youkai would not intrude. Unlike Suika, Yukari does not appear to share any personal connection with Yuugi. In her Immaterial and Missing Power ending, Yukari expresses the belief that if the oni were to return to Gensokyo, it would have to happen gradually rather than all at once.
The exact length of time Yukari and Kasen have known each other is unclear, but both are youkai sages. The monologue in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense states that the youkai sages proposed the Hakurei Barrier, suggesting the two have known each other since at least that era.
After Kasen descended from the mountain in the present day, Yukari assumed she was always aligned with her and that her actions were intended to further Yukari's ideals. By the time of Wild and Horned Hermit Chapter 35, Kasen had grown frustrated and bluntly informed Yukari that she was not on her side. This admission caused Yukari a brief moment of visible distress before she regained composure, though she stated she would wait as long as necessary for Kasen to come around.
Kasen's dream self in Antinomy of Common Flowers calls Yukari a coward who lets others do her work because she is afraid to do it herself. While dream selves are exaggerated representations of the real individual, Doremy's explanation in Reisen's scenario suggests that Kasen's normal feelings at least partially align with this sentiment.
Okina is another of the youkai sages. It is implied in Reimu's Extra stage in Hidden Star in Four Seasons that the two are familiar with each other and that Yukari assisted Reimu in defeating Okina by suggesting she use the "boundary between seasons" as a countermeasure. Okina recognized Yukari's handiwork, while Reimu admitted she did not understand the logic behind it. During the fireworks festival documented in The Grimoire of Usami, the two banter with one another as equals.
Yukari employed Remilia as part of her scheme to collect the residence tax and retaliate against the Lunarians in Silent Sinner in Blue. Patchouli later reveals that Remilia was aware of the manipulation but did not object, simply out of boredom. Remilia harbors an unexplained rivalry with Yukari, wanting to reach the Moon in her own way before Yukari can and surprise her. This rivalry may stem from the power struggle mentioned in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense's Vampire article, potentially originating from the vampire incident. The rivalry appears to be largely one-sided, though Remilia has no issue with Yukari attending the party at the end of Silent Sinner in Blue or assisting her in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
Dialogue in Immaterial and Missing Power implies that the two already knew each other before that game. It is possible they first met during the vampire incident and that Yukari was the one who signed "the contract" with Remilia.
Patchouli first encounters Yukari in her scenario in Immaterial and Missing Power. In Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Yukari assigns her to monitor the underworld in her victory quote. Patchouli later urges Yukari to take action regarding the evil spirits emerging from underground in Subterranean Animism's prologue. Yukari ultimately agrees to act, stating she "can't let them all just do whatever they want again"—though it is unclear, even to Patchouli, which incident she is referring to. Patchouli continues collaborating with Yukari on underground matters, later informing her of the Palanquin Ship in a Touhou Hisoutensoku victory quote.
Alongside Reimu, Yukari confronted Eirin Yagokoro and Kaguya Houraisan to restore the full moon in Imperishable Night, making her one of the few individuals aware of their lunar origins. After the incident was resolved, the group shared moon-viewing sake together.
Unbeknownst to each other, Yukari and Eirin share a deeper history. As Watatsuki no Toyohime mentions at the end of Chapter 17 of Silent Sinner in Blue, Eirin set a trap a thousand years ago to catch anyone attempting to invade the Moon. Yukari was fully aware of the trap and had apparently already triggered it before—assuming the "make-believe" story in Cage in Lunatic Runagate actually occurred. She appears to hold a grudge against the Lunarian sage who set it, referring to her as "the much-despised Lunarian sage."
However, Yukari has not realized that Eirin is that very individual. Neither character makes special note of the other during Imperishable Night, and they are amicable in the ending. Near the conclusion of Silent Sinner in Blue, Yukari remarks to Ran that she is uncertain whether "the Brain of the Moon" has actually settled on Earth, suspecting Eirin may be a spy.
The final chapter of Cage in Lunatic Runagate reveals that Yukari orchestrated the events primarily to teach Eirin to fear the unknown, likely because those who live as humans in Gensokyo are meant to fear youkai—as she explained to Ran in her lecture about aliens.
When asked about Yukari's relationship with Maribel during a high school open lecture, series creator ZUN declined to elaborate beyond mentioning Lafcadio Hearn's name and laughing. Since then, fans have pointed out numerous connections and similarities between the two characters in official Touhou works, though the true nature of their relationship remains unconfirmed.
Yukari and Rinnosuke's interactions are mostly business-related. In exchange for fuel for his kerosene fan heater, Yukari takes merchandise she likes and occasionally shares information on items. While Rinnosuke is grateful, he is also uneasy around her and finds her ominous. Although he cannot remember it, Yukari once prevented him from being spirited away to the Outside World.
When Yukari senses Eiki approaching in Seasonal Dream Vision, she and Yuyuko take their leave immediately to avoid speaking with her. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense notes that most long-lived youkai have encountered Eiki at least once and tend to avoid her due to her lectures.
For reasons unknown, Alice is willing to confront Yukari in Immaterial and Missing Power despite otherwise avoiding powerful youkai like Remilia and Yuyuko. Yukari also arranged for Alice's dolls to be used for long-range communication in Subterranean Animism. Dialogue between the two in Immaterial and Missing Power indicates they knew each other beforehand. Like most characters, Alice remains wary of Yukari by default. Alice is also familiar with the various youkai roles and agreements that Yukari frequently promotes. In Alice's second bad ending in Immaterial and Missing Power, Yukari harshly scolds her, much to the amusement of those present.
Yukari and Keine met and fought at the Human Village during Imperishable Night. Keine's ability to hide history has no effect on Yukari, who was not even aware she was using it. The reason for this immunity is unexplained, though the frequent association of Yukari with history and reality leaves many possible explanations. Yukari also expressed dislike for Keine as a "human-faced beast."
Yukari first encountered the Three Fairies of Light in a continuation of Chapter 0 in Eastern and Little Nature Deity Chapter 5, asking if she could join in their pranks—prompting them to flee. Later, in Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she needed to repair a tree that was part of the Great Hakurei Barrier. She accomplished this by relocating the three fairies into the tree, but only after testing that they were too weak to pose a serious threat. They failed the test spectacularly, so Yukari allowed them to move in. Sunny's ability to reflect some of Yukari's danmaku did, however, manage to impress her somewhat.
Sumireko's ability to enter Gensokyo through her dreams remains a mystery even to Yukari. Yukari observes that the more frequently Sumireko visits, the more dream souls—and eventually sleeping villagers from the Human Village—would be transferred to the human world to reduce the strain on the barrier. Recognizing the considerable power this requires, Yukari suspects that someone else may be guiding Sumireko, initially suspecting Kasen—though Kasen denies this, insisting Sumireko is coming through her own power. Yukari eventually states she will create dummies infused with the dreams of villagers to mitigate the shock.[2] When Aya requests an interview about Sumireko's free travel between worlds, Yukari claims it does not concern her and presents no issue, yet also remarks—somewhat suspiciously—that Sumireko is inadvertently fulfilling a role in strengthening the barrier between Gensokyo and the human world. Yukari later assists Sumireko on other occasions, such as in Antinomy of Common Flowers[3] and Violet Detector[4] (assuming it is not a dream dweller of hers).
In Silent Sinner in Blue, Toyohime kills one of Yukari's shikigami crows. She and Yukari also have a brief exchange where Yukari calls her a "fool who took rank out of obligation" while Toyohime says Yukari had "good timing".

Grade: S
Tier: At least 8-C, Far Higher with Spiritual Power, Continually Increasing with Equations
Cardinality: Finite
Dimensionality: 3-D
Attack Potency: At least Building level (Potency) (Yukari is noted to be friends with the strongest class of youkai, including oni like Suika Ibuki[23]. Referred to as the strongest youkai in Gensokyo[24]. Suika views Yukari as a worthy opponent to fight, noting that they haven't fought in a long time, meaning they have fought before spell card rules were even established[25]. This makes Yukari comparable if not superior to Oni who are able to cause nearby buildings collapse with just a step[26]), Far Higher with Spiritual Power (Spiritual Power is the main power source for how characters are able to fight, all of their attacks normally drain spirit and even blocking attacks drains spirit[27], where if they're out of spirit they cannot use bullets, special moves, or spell cards[28], where spiritual power is in the same layer as magic[29]. Noted how even Yumemi Okazaki's scientific magic truly pales in comparison with the real thing[30], which Yumemi noted to not make light of the power of her science as she could blow up the planet at any moment[31]), Continually Increasing with Equations (Ran notes that equations themselves are naturally shikigami and just as equations that neither diverge nor converge produce an infinte number of solid objects, so do the equations Yukari uses to increase her power indefinetely which by extension applies to Yukari as no matter how fast, strong, or intelligent Ran is Yukari will always be leagues above her as she's Yukari's shikigami[32]). Can ignore covnentional durability with Magic (Magic exists outside of the Grand Unified Theory[33], a theory with any model that merges electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces into a single force at high energies, unifying gravity with the electronuclear interaction, providing a more comprehensive theory of everything. Yumemi explains that on her world, all power can be explained by the Grand Unified Theory, however she posits an existence of a power not covered by the Theory: the power of magic[34]. Yumemi also explains that in the world of Gensokyo, magic unifies everything[35]. Magic is noted by Yumemi to have close ties with religion[36]. The second layer of reality is spirit and magic, while the first layer is where all things within the laws of physics presides, putting attacks with magic outside of the conventional laws of physics[29]) & Boundary Manipulation (The ability to manipulate boundaries makes Yukari capable of fundamentally undermining reality, examples including "If there was no water surface, there could be no lake. If there was no sky line, neither mountain nor sky could exist. Were it not for the Great Barrier, even Gensokyo itself wouldn't exist. If there were no boundaries, everything would probably exist as a single enrmous object"; this ability is also likened to creation and destruction, logically creating a new existence or conversly negating an existence[37])
Durability: At least Building level, Far Higher with Spiritual Power (Spiritual Power is what protects fighters from other spiritual attacks[38], where if they're out of spirit they cannot use bullets, special moves, spell cards or block attacks[39], where spiritual power is in the same layer as magic[29]), Continually Increasing with Equations. Her existence as a Youkai makes her difficult to kill (Reimu realized that only the Yin-Yang Orb was effective against non-human creatures[40], with it being noted that Reimu using her ofuda, her spirit power, and her martial arts all prove to be useless against her enemies[41], meaning Youkai cannot really be harmed by regular or standard weaponry. It's noted that one cannot defeat spirits or devilish powers without a weapon with an unnatural amount of spiritual power such as the Yin-Yang Orb[42]. Physical attacks such as a whacking a sake bottle over the head are considered violent methods that wouldn't work on youkai[43], with it only being spiritual attacks that cause fatal wounds to youkai[18]. When attempting to exterminate a youkai, one does not use weapons that cause physical damage, instead weapons with an "origin" are more preferable[44]. In the world beyond (Gensokyo), physical form has no meaning for all non-human entities[45])
Striking Strength: At least Building Class (Potency) (Referred to as the strongest youkai in Gensokyo[24] making her superior to vampires who are strong enough to crush boulders[46])
Lifting Strength: At least Class 5 (Referred to as the strongest youkai in Gensokyo[24] making her superior to vampires who have tremendous physical abilities, being able to uproot a thousand-year-old tree single-handedly[47]), Continually Increasing with Equations
Travel Speed: At least Massively Hypersonic+ (Comparable to vampires like Remilia, who are able to fly around the moon[48]. Vampires are able to run through the human village within the blink of an eye[47], reaching these speeds. Vampires are noted to be faster than the eye can follow[46]), likely Speed of Light (Vampires are the only species that are noted to possibly be able to keep up with Tengu[49], this should make them relative to Aya Shameimaru, where her spell card has her move so fast she starts becoming a beam of light[50]), Continually Increasing with Equations (Ran notes that equations themselves are naturally shikigami and just as equations that neither diverge nor converge produce an infinte number of solid objects, so do the equations Yukari uses to increase her power indefinetely which by extension applies to Yukari as no matter how fast, strong, or intelligent Ran is Yukari will always be leagues above her as she's Yukari's shikigami[32])
Attack Speed: At least Massively Hypersonic+, likely Speed of Light, Continually Increasing with Equations. Speed of Light with Outer Force Infinite Speed Flying Object (Sends an object that appears instantly as a light beam requiring it to be aim dodged[51]). Magic Attacks lack a defined speed (Magic exists outside of the Grand Unified Theory[52], a theory with any model that merges electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces into a single force at high energies, unifying gravity with the electronuclear interaction, providing a more comprehensive theory of everything. Yumemi explains that on her world, all power can be explained by the Grand Unified Theory, however she posits an existence of a power not covered by the Theory: the power of magic[53]. Yumemi also explains that in the world of Gensokyo, magic unifies everything[54]. Magic is noted by Yumemi to have close ties with religion[55])
Reaction Speed: At least Massively Hypersonic+, likely Speed of Light, Continually Increasing with Equations
Stamina: Superhuman (Fought with Remilia[56] until the sun rised[57] without showing signs of tiring)
Range: Standard Melee, Extended Melee' with her Parasol, Multiversal with Boundary Manipulation (The ability to manipulate boundaries makes Yukari capable of fundamentally undermining reality[37]. Yukari's abilities to manipulate boundaires is noted that it can affect anything and if she put it to full use then there wouldn't even be a game[22]. It's noted that Yukari can manipulate the boundaries between anything and everything[10]. Noted by ZUN that Yukari's powers keep the games' world and the players' world separate[58])
Intelligence: At least Supergenius Intelligence (Yukari is noted to possess a superhuman intellect especially within mathematics[37]. Her shikigami, Ran Yakumo, just to kill time calculated the width of the Sanzu River, a river that separates this world and the next and having no fixed width and being famous for extending to extreme distances under certain circumstances, which made it believed to be that calculating the width of this river to be impossible[59], and is noted that her computational prowess is unbelievable, being able to solve complicated equations in an insant and decided to try and calculate the width fo the SAnzu River just to waste time[59], with it requiring some degree of specialized knowledged needed to understand the formulas involved[59] that require several thousand forumlae in order to solve the equation[59]. Ran while bored tries to calculate things like how many particles it would take to blanket Gensokyo with mist or how long it would take to reach the North Star[32]. Despite all of these achievements, Ran notes how Yukari is far better at her in equations and that she can never solve any of her equations, noting that Yukari would determine not only the Sanzu River's width bu talso the depth of the bottom of Avici, how long it would take Ursa Major to devour the North Star all in an instant[32]), Continually Increasing with Equations (Ran notes that equations themselves are naturally shikigami and just as equations that neither diverge nor converge produce an infinte number of solid objects, so do the equations Yukari uses to increase her power indefinetely which by extension applies to Yukari as no matter how fast, strong, or intelligent Ran is Yukari will always be leagues above her as she's Yukari's shikigami[32]. It is noted that Yukari's high intelligence with regard to manipulating numbers makes her excel at calculations and analysis[60])
Grandmaster level (Due to Yukari's long lifespan she has a wealth of knowledge and experience spanning over 1000 years[37]. Made yin-yang orbs that let her talk to Reimu during the events of Subterranean Animism[61])
Grandmaster level (Yukari is surprisingly talkative and will gladly tell someone all sorts of things about herself or Gensokyo, though it is impossible to confirm any of her stories[23]. She is also friends with youkai of the strongest class[23]. Yukari's notices allows her to do things like warn Patchouli to watch the underground for a while[62] with the plot in Subterranean Animism having Patchouli notice the issue with the underground[63].)
Grandmaster level (Yukari is always astute and calculating, preparing for ways to defeat opponents, she initially appeared before Reimu and Kasen[64] to stop them from fighting Shion anD Joon Yorigami[65] and had others go to fight Joon and Shion[66] to try and get information on how to defeat them[67] with her learning from Byakuren that when using compulsory possession the master can't get the slave out and the slave won't be hurt either[68], and learned how the ability for perfect possession worked from learning that the Shinmyoumaru Sukuna they were talking to was the dream world version having her realize one can switch slaves in the middle of a fight[69] which she used to counter Shion and Joon's Possession Exchange Absolute Loser[70]. Tricked the Lunarian Emissaries by pretending to be angry for an entire month and sending two decoys to distract them while in reality she sent Yuyuko to sneak in there and steal something from them[71], as she knew she stood no chance against Toyohime in a straight match and instead opted to weaponize her being inferior to make Toyohime believe she checkmated her[72], on top of outsmarting both of them she even outsmarted their teacher Eirin Yakogoro[73], who is the Japanese god of wisdom[74])
Grandmaster level
Should be able to replicate anything Maribel Hearn can do as Yukari has at least a thousand years of experience with her ability while Merry's ability was initially only able to see the borders of the boundaries between the worlds[316], and then eventually evolved into being able to manipulate boundaries[317], thus her abilities should still be novice in comparisson to Yukari, giving her:
Okina notes that Reimu's border abilities are similar to Yukari's[325], thus Yukari should be able to replicate any border abilities Reimu can use, which includes:

Yukari's main ability is manipulating any kind of boundary. This ability has been described as logically being able to affect essentially anything. She explains that this power allows her to control or remove boundaries between any and all things—Gensokyo and the Outside World, the worlds of the living and the dead, humans and youkai, and even day and night.
Perfect Memento in Strict Sense describes manipulating boundaries as a terrifying god-like ability with no weak points, no defense or countermeasure, capable of fundamentally undermining reality itself, and one of the most dangerous abilities known among youkai. The Imperishable Night manual states that "the danger and potency of her ability is beyond imagination".
Everything is built upon the existence of boundaries. If there were no boundaries, everything would exist as a single enormous object. Thus, manipulating boundaries is an ability of both creation and destruction: making a new boundary creates a new existence, while destroying a boundary negates an existence. Physical boundaries, as well as the general idea of boundaries, can be manipulated. She can manipulate the boundary between dreams and reality, which may explain how she dragged the real Sumireko Usami out of the Dream World in Antinomy of Common Flowers.
Yukari can see and see through boundaries that are normally invisible. When the Human Village was displaced from history by Keine Kamishirasawa, Yukari was completely unfazed and still able to see it. She also tells Marisa that it would be easy for her to manipulate the boundary between winter and spring.
She can control boundaries and bend them to her will. In Immaterial and Missing Power, she adjusted the sky by manipulating the border between daylight and moonlight to unite day and night. According to Marisa, Yukari can even control the boundary between "a danmaku for play and a danmaku for battle".
Yukari can sense and repair damage to the Great Hakurei Barrier. Although Yuyuko doubts Yukari could make such a strong barrier, she has been referred to as its creator on various occasions.
Despite how limitless her ability sounds, there are limitations, usually in relation to other powerful entities.
Examples of boundary manipulation:
Many of her spell cards allude to boundary manipulation, including Barrier "Balance of Motion and Stillness", Barrier "Mesh of Light and Darkness", "Boundary of Humans and Youkai", and Barrier "Charming Quadruple Barrier".
Yukari's most prominent ability is the use of "gaps"—portals between two places. She can hold, sit on, or emerge from these gaps, allowing her to appear anywhere and freely travel to places like the Outside World. Within these gaps, numerous eyes can be seen, which according to the description of her spell card Magic Eye "Laplace's Demon", she can also use to see.
She can create gaps that only she can pass through, or gaps that anything can pass through. It is possible for someone to enter a gap and unknowingly end up in a completely different place—Flandre Scarlet once ended up in the Palace of Earth Spirits while merely intending to enter a room of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
In battle, Yukari uses gaps to wield almost any object as a weapon, including tombstones, road signs, and running trains. She retreats inside them to avoid attacks or land unexpected strikes, sucks in attacks to throw them back, and merges different gaps to create harmful spatial distortions.
Though seemingly limitless, the range of her gaps is sometimes restricted. She can create a portal to the "fantastic" side of the Moon using the moon's reflection on a lake's surface, but only during the full moon—the only period when the passage is open. For unknown reasons, she cannot use her powers to bring a living being to the far side of the Moon, where the Lunar Capital is located.
Yukari is skilled in Onmyoudou, the Taoism-derived arts of traditional Japanese court wizards. She specializes in spells that create and manipulate barriers, presumably due to overlap with her innate abilities. She has taught some spells to Reimu Hakurei, whose own techniques have similar roots.
She displays great aptitude with shikigami, binding a powerful kitsune and numerous lesser servants. She is skilled at giving the correct orders to fully maximize her shikigami's potential. Ran Yakumo states that despite sleeping most of the time, Yukari is capable of giving orders no one else would think up the instant she opens her mouth. She uses complex equations to increase Ran's power indefinitely, likely one of the reasons she views computers and shikigami as one and the same.
Yukari talked to Luna Child even after the fairy erased all sound around her. Luna described it as a voice she heard in her own heart. It is unknown if this ability is part of her main ability over boundaries.

Immaterial and Missing Power can be played using either a keyboard or a gamepad.
For Player 1 using a keyboard, the default controls are:
Character movement is represented using a numpad layout:
7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3
Special inputs are performed by quickly pressing a sequence of directions followed by a button. For example:
The number 5 indicates no directional input.
For keyboards without a numpad, diagonals are produced by pressing two directional keys simultaneously. For example, Down + Right = 3 on the numpad layout.
Button notation in most game documentation uses A/B/C/D, though older sources (like readme.txt) may use P/K/S instead:
Input: 6 The character is able to advance across the battlefield, allowing them to apply pressure, close distance, or reposition during combat.
Input: 4 The character can retreat to create space, disengage from pressure, or reposition defensively.
Input: 2 The character can lower their stance, granting access to low-profile actions and certain techniques while reducing their hit area against high attacks.
Input: 7, 8, & 9 The character can leap into the air in multiple trajectories, enabling aerial attacks, evasive movement, and vertical repositioning.
Input: 6 6 The character performs a rapid burst of forward movement. During this action, they briefly enter a grazing state, allowing them to pass through certain threats while advancing. Some characters will dash farther if 6 is held.
Input: 4 4 The character quickly retreats with a burst of movement while entering a grazing state, providing both evasive mobility and defensive repositioning. Some characters will dash farther if 4 is held.
Input: 2 7, 2 8, & 2 9 The character executes a powerful leap that carries them higher and farther than a standard jump. This movement also applies grazing, making it effective for evasion and aerial control.
Input: 6 6 or 4 4 while in the air While airborne, the character can rapidly change their position midair. The number of air dashes available is limited until landing, with most characters performing 2 and Remilia being able to perform 3.
Input: A / B All characters possess close-range melee attacks that change based on proximity to the opponent.
Input: fA / fB When performed at greater distance, A and B become projectile-based attacks instead of melee strikes.
Input: 6A / 6B Enhanced melee attacks with increased reach and power compared to their neutral counterparts.
Input: 2A / 2B Low-profile melee attacks that hit crouching opponents or strike low.
Input: 8A / 8B Mid-air melee attacks used for aerial combat and pressure.
Input: 86A / 82A / 82B Specialized aerial attacks with directional emphasis.
Input: 22A / 22B Melee attacks designed to break an opponent’s guard and create openings.
Input: 66A / 66B / 6DA / 6DB Attacks performed during a forward dash that extend range and grant grazing properties.
Some characters possess multiple variants of these attacks.
Input: 66 2A / 66 2B / 6D2A / 6D2B Dash attacks that strike low while maintaining grazing properties.
Input: 6fA / 6fB / 2fA / 2fB Modified projectile attacks with altered angles, trajectories, or behaviors. Availability and functionality vary by character.
Input: 8fA / 8fB Mid-air versions of standard projectiles.
Input: 86fA / 82fA / 82fB Directional aerial projectile variants available only to select characters.
Input: C A distinct projectile separate from fA and fB, often possessing unique properties.
Input: 6C / 2C Modified versions of C with altered angles or effects.
Input: 8C An aerial version of the C projectile.
Input: 86C / 82C Specialized aerial C variants available to select characters.
Input: 22C The character deploys a bomb that knocks back nearby opponents. Bombs have limited stock and are replenished through item collection.
Input: 236D The character declares a Spell Card, entering a powerful state. The declaration grants temporary invincibility, with a brief vulnerable window at the start.
In addition to standard attacks, each character possesses a unique set of Special Moves. These techniques are executed through specific directional input sequences combined with attack inputs. While the exact techniques differ by character, the underlying input structures are largely standardized across the roster.
The available Special Moves and their corresponding input sequences are documented within in-game character profiles and practice interfaces.
Most characters utilize the following core directional sequences for their Special Moves:
Each input may produce different results depending on whether A, B, or C is used.
When a character is struck, any active projectiles she has on the screen are converted into collectible items and are immediately claimed by the opposing fighter. These items fall into two categories:
Spirit Items — Small blue squares labeled with “霊” (Spirit). Collecting these increases the fighter’s spirit gauge and they are the most frequently obtained item.
Bomb Items — Large green squares marked with a “B”. Collecting one increases the fighter’s bomb stock, up to a maximum of two bombs at any time.
Additionally, whenever a character is knocked down, the opponent automatically receives multiple spirit items. Roughly every third knockdown also grants the opponent a bomb item.
When an attack connects, a character can defend by holding a backward direction (1, 4, or 7). Successfully blocking greatly reduces incoming damage, often negating it entirely, though certain situations may apply penalties.
Melee attacks that are blocked under the correct conditions incur no penalty. However, some melee attacks require a specific blocking state—standing, crouching, or airborne—to be blocked properly. If such an attack is blocked in the wrong state, the block is considered incorrect. In these cases, the block effect appears red instead of blue, and the defending character suffers a loss to health and/or spirit.
Guard crush attacks (22A and 22B) follow special rules. If they are not blocked, they function as strong melee attacks. When blocking, 22A must be blocked while standing, and 22B must be blocked while crouching. Blocking either attack incorrectly results in the immediate loss of all spirit.
Projectiles that can be grazed cannot be blocked correctly. Blocking these projectiles causes minor health damage—sometimes limited to the red portion of the health bar—and also applies a spirit penalty.
In Story Mode, later bosses frequently use Spell Cards that feature unblockable projectiles. These attacks must be avoided through grazing or manual movement. Some Spell Cards include projectiles that cannot be blocked or grazed at all, requiring the character to fully move out of their path to avoid taking damage.
Spirit Power (霊力) governs a character’s ability to fire projectiles, defend against attacks, execute special moves, and activate Spell Cards. The current amount is shown on the Spirit Gauge (霊力ゲージ) at the lower-left of the screen. Different actions consume different amounts of spirit. If no spirit is spent for a short period, the gauge will begin to recover automatically, with spirit items accelerating this regeneration.
When a character’s Spirit Power is fully depleted, the gauge turns red. While in this state, the character cannot use projectiles or special moves until the gauge has fully refilled. If spirit is exhausted as a result of an incorrect block, the character is also briefly stunned. During spirit depletion, sA and sB lose their enhanced properties and function the same as A and B. Spirit recovery continues normally, and spirit items still restore gauge value.
Blocking behavior also changes while spirit is drained. Melee attacks can only be blocked correctly; even when blocked properly, the character still takes health damage using a distinct block animation. If a melee attack is blocked incorrectly, it will connect as though no block was attempted. Projectiles may only be blocked while grounded; airborne blocking is ineffective, and the projectile will hit regardless.
Grazing occurs when a character is dashing, super jumping, or performing specific actions that allow them to temporarily avoid damage. While grazing, projectiles pass through the character without dealing harm, and in some cases, the projectile is destroyed upon contact.
Certain high-level attacks, especially from endgame Story Mode bosses, feature Spell Cards with unblockable and ungrazeable projectiles. These attacks cannot be avoided by standard grazing, requiring the character to manually move out of the projectile’s path to prevent damage.
Spell Cards are powerful, visually striking attacks that characters can use once they have accumulated enough Sign Power (符力), displayed near the Spirit Gauge. Each character can select two Spell Cards prior to a fight: one for the first (white) health bar, called the First Sign (壱符), and one for the second (red) health bar, called the Second Sign (弐符). Second Signs are typically enhanced versions of the First Sign, though some may be entirely unique.
Accumulating Sign Power is achieved by dealing or receiving damage, as well as collecting items. When a character declares a Spell Card (by pressing 22D), their background darkens, a seal appears beneath them, and a timer starts. If the timer reaches zero, the declaration ends, preventing further Sign Power accumulation for that round.
Activating a Spell Card is usually done with 236D, though some have an alternate 214D input. Certain Spell Cards may require an additional input to deal damage. There is a brief vulnerability window at the start of the animation; if the character is hit, the Spell Card is canceled, wasting one Sign Power. Once successfully activated, the character becomes briefly invincible. Using a Spell Card consumes both Sign Power and Spirit Power, though declarations may continue if Sign Power is depleted, except in specific cases like Marisa's Final Spark, which consumes all resources and ends the declaration after one use.
Spell Card images include corner symbols indicating their function: a circle for ranged, a sword for melee, and a crescent moon for special utility effects. The top right corner indicates whether the card is a First Sign or Second Sign.
Scarlet Weather Rhapsody can be played using either a keyboard or a gamepad.
For Player 1 on keyboard, the default inputs are configured as follows:
Movement notation follows the standard numpad-style directional layout:
7 8 9 4 5 6 1 2 3
Directional notation always assumes the character is positioned on the left side of the screen. As a result, “forward” and “backward” reverse depending on screen position, but the numerical notation remains consistent.
Diagonal directions can be produced on a keyboard by pressing two directional keys simultaneously. For example, pressing Up and Right at the same time corresponds to 9, while Down and Left corresponds to 1.
Special actions are executed by inputting rapid directional sequences followed by a button press. For example:
The number 5 is occasionally used in notation to explicitly indicate a neutral state with no directional input.
For keyboards without a physical numpad, directional inputs are still represented using this system, with diagonals achieved through simultaneous key presses.
Most in-game documentation uses the A/B/C/D notation for button inputs. However, some older references may instead use P, K, and S:
The character can move toward the opponent to close distance or apply pressure. Input: 6
The character can move away from the opponent to create space or reposition defensively. Input: 4
The character can lower their stance, enabling low-profile movement and access to crouching actions. Input: 2
The character can jump backward, vertically, or forward, allowing aerial movement and attacks. Input: 7 (backward jump), 8 (neutral jump), 9 (forward jump)
The character performs a rapid forward movement. During this action, the character enters a grazing state, allowing certain projectiles to pass through. Input: 66 Alternate Input: D + 6 Note: Holding the forward direction may cause some characters to dash farther.
The character performs a rapid backward movement while entering a grazing state, providing evasive mobility. Input: 44 Alternate Input: D + 4 Note: Holding the backward direction may cause some characters to dash farther.
The character executes an enhanced jump that travels higher and farther than a standard jump while applying grazing. Input: 27, 28, or 29 Alternate Input: D + 7, D + 8, or D + 9
While airborne, the character can perform a rapid burst of movement forward or backward. The number of air dashes is limited before landing, with most characters able to perform two by default. Certain conditions, such as Wind weather, may increase this limit. Air dashes do not consume Spirit Power and cover a fixed distance. Air dashes and flight share the same usage limit. Using one reduces the remaining opportunities for the other before landing. For example, performing an air dash reduces the number of available flight actions, and vice versa. This shared limitation also applies under special conditions such as Wind weather. Input (airborne): 66 (forward), 44 (backward)
While airborne, the character can enter a sustained movement state that allows controlled flight. During flight, the character is considered to be grazing but consumes Spirit Power over time. Flight continues as long as the input is held or until Spirit Power is depleted. Input (airborne): D + direction
Common flight directions include:
While flying, the character can change direction mid-flight by switching directional inputs while continuing to hold D.
All characters possess a standard set of basic attacks. Certain attacks change properties depending on whether the input is tapped or held. A tapped A input is referred to as "A", while a held A input is referred to as "[A]".
Additionally, some attacks vary based on distance. Pressing A while very close to the opponent results in one version, while pressing A at a farther distance produces a different version (the exact distance varies by character). The close-range version is referred to as "A", while the farther version is referred to as "f.A".
A fast melee attack.
A slightly slower melee attack with increased reach and power compared to A.
A slower but significantly longer-reaching and more powerful melee attack.
A fast, low-hitting melee attack that does not change based on distance.
Functionally similar to 6A, but hits low instead of mid.
An airborne-only melee attack that generally strikes upward.
Guard Crush attacks. These are performed by holding the A button while using the respective directional input.
A light projectile attack.
A variant of B that is aimed higher.
A variant of B that is aimed lower.
A heavier projectile attack with different properties from B.
A heavier projectile attack that is usually aimed straight forward.
A heavier projectile attack that is usually aimed upward.
All of the above attacks also have aerial variants when performed while airborne.
Most projectile attacks can be charged by holding the input button ([B] or [C]). Charged projectiles typically release additional bullets or enhanced effects. An audible sound cue plays when a charged projectile or a Guard Crush attack is successfully executed.
These are attacks performed during a forward dash. They are generally dashing melee attacks that move the character forward farther than standard attacks. Depending on the character, these attacks may also apply grazing.
Attack properties, ranges, speeds, and behaviors can vary significantly between characters, and many general rules have character-specific exceptions.
Input: 66 + A / B / C
The character possesses a set of SpecialMoves distinct from standard attacks. These techniques are executed through specific directional input sequences combined with attack inputs. The exact effects and behavior of each technique depend on the character.
In some cases, the same technique may be executed through more than one input sequence. Likewise, input sequences that produce a technique for one character may not produce the same result for another character.
The following notation is used when listing Special Technique inputs: - “>” indicates sequential inputs. - “Hold” indicates the input is held rather than tapped. - “+” indicates inputs performed simultaneously.
The availability and behavior of these Special Techniques vary by character. This section reflects common input structures rather than guaranteed results.

Standard
The character is able to guard against incoming attacks by holding a backward direction. Successful blocking greatly reduces or negates damage, though certain conditions may result in penalties.
Melee attacks can be blocked correctly, preventing penalties entirely. However, some melee attacks require the character to be in a specific state—standing, crouching, or airborne—to be blocked correctly. Blocking such an attack in an incorrect state results in a spirit penalty. Incorrect blocks are visually indicated by a red block effect and accompanied by an audible cue.
Guard Crush
Certain attacks function as Guard Crush techniques. When unblocked, these attacks behave as powerful melee strikes. When blocked, each Guard Crush attack has a required blocking state. Blocking a Guard Crush attack incorrectly results in the temporary loss of a spirit orb and leaves the character briefly vulnerable.
Projectile and Special Attack Interaction
Standard grazable projectiles cannot be blocked correctly. Blocking these attacks results in a spirit penalty. Special attacks and Spell Card techniques additionally inflict chip damage to the character’s health alongside spirit damage when blocked.
The character can perform a Border Escape to disengage while trapped in a guarding state. This action allows the character to reposition by escaping in a chosen direction, creating space or avoiding continued pressure.
Executing a Border Escape consumes one spirit orb as a cost for its use.
Spirit is a resource required to fire projectiles and activate certain special techniques. Rather than a single continuous gauge, spirit is represented by multiple individual orbs that are consumed when these actions are performed.
When spirit is not actively used, depleted orbs gradually regenerate over time. However, if the character suffers a guard crush or performs a Border Escape, one spirit orb becomes temporarily disabled and cannot be used until it naturally recovers.
While spirit orbs are disabled, the character retains access to projectiles, special techniques, and flight, but with reduced capacity. As more orbs are rendered unusable, available offensive and mobility options become increasingly limited. In this weakened state, the character is also more susceptible to further guard crushes, as spirit penalties apply regardless of how many active orbs remain.
Grazing is a defensive state that occurs during certain movement actions, such as rapid movement or aerial maneuvers. While grazing, incoming projectiles pass through the character without dealing damage.
In some cases, successfully grazing a projectile will also cause the projectile to be neutralized. Grazing is primarily used to bypass projectile pressure while maintaining mobility.
Spell Cards are powerful, one-time-use abilities that can be activated during combat. Characters assemble a "deck" of 20 Cards, which gradually become available as the character deals or takes damage. Deck composition is customizable in the Player Profile, but must always contain exactly 20 Cards.
Activation is performed by pressing B and C simultaneously. Characters can switch between available Cards by pressing A and B simultaneously.
Cards are divided into three types:
Some Spell Cards require multiple Cards in hand to activate, while others can be used with fewer. Availability is indicated by a glowing border around the Card's image.

The Touhou Project franchise canoncity mainly falls under any media worked on by ZUN are official and canon to the overall lineup.
There are various aspects constantly debated about within the canon:
Media like PC-98, has been noted by ZUN to be ignored as one can ignore derivative works[616]. He has also said that anything prior to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil can for the most part be ignored and one can think of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as the starting from a clean slate and starting a new series[617], he's also referred to Highly Responsive to Prayers as a study product[618]. With this in mind, one would assume that PC-98 is thus non-canon to the Windows continuity of games.
However, ZUN has also directly stated PC-98 games are the same world as the Windows Games, stating that any contradictions that exist from PC-98 can be ignored from the retcon in Windows Era[619]. While one argues ZUN noting the works are derivative works to be ignored and Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil should be seen as the starting point, these statements are moreso telling a fan to not worry about having to play PC-98 games or learn more about their stories.
It's also been noted in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's おまけ.txt that the game chronologically is not too far from the previous title, which would be Mystic Square, the PC-98 title[620]. ZUN has also directly brought back characters from PC-98 games, noting he wanted to bring back characters from before Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and notes any of the other older characters that don't appear have probably retired by now and are warmly watching over things from various places nowadays[621]. When asked where Mima from PC-98 has gone, ZUN notes that he doesn't bring them back due to making things complicated and having potentially angry fans ask where she has been the entire time, he has also noted that there's not much use for characters like Genji as Reimu can fly now and also notes he is not dead[622]. ZUN has also made mention to Genji probably living in the lake in the back of the shrine[623]. In Touhou Sangetsusei ~ Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Reimu and Marisa were talking about glowing moss with Reimu saying it would be nice to transfer it to the pond in the back of the Hakurei Shrine and Marisa saying that she could make it grow there on the turtles' back, referencing Genji[624].
In Touhou 07 Perfect Cherry Blossom, when Alice meets Reimu, she tells her long time no see, noting that they've met before calling her "old friend"[625]. In Yuuka's mode in Touhou Project - Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Reimu directly references defeating Yuuka back in PC-98[626]. If Yuuka defeats Marisa in the same game, she will note that Marisa has grown up quite a bit, when the last time she's seen her has been in PC-98[627].
Seeing as ZUN himself has directly said both PC-98 and Windows are in the same world and that characters directly acknowledged PC-98 events and reference characters from it, PC-98 is completely canon and any contradictions PC-98 have can be ignored.
Touhou 7.5 - Immaterial and Missing Power takes place between Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night[628].
In the series, there are multiple playable character routes, including some where the characters fight Reimu herself and defeat her, calling question into what route is canon. ZUN has elaborated that canonically, anytime Reimu and the gang are defeated, they challenge again however many times they want, but on the youkai side, they do not challenge again after being defeated and are not attached to the results of winning or losing[629].
In terms of how playable routes have went, some examples of canonically noted routes:
With some of these examples, it is normally assumed that in some way Reimu has some part in resolving every incident and other routes are dubiously canon depending on what transpired.
There are many cases of weaker humans beating stronger Yokai or vice versa within the Touhou series, this has been elaborated on in Reimu's profile on Perfect Memento in Strict Sense. Reimu introduced the spell card rules as the youkai had no way to defeat the Hakurei shrine maiden, making many youkai feel that their meaning to exist have dissapeared[362]. The rules incoporate the following:
The original draft held these rules[633]:
These rules allows for duels that feel almost like sport rather then a match, and have allowed for weaker fighters to challenge stronger ones, due to this though, it also has become possible for youkai to freely defeat Reimu without worrying about the consequences.
Due to them being written into cards and essentially affecting the ability and power of an attack, the spell cards are likely the thing binding attacks to specific properties.
Parallel Worlds is a topic brought up at some points in the Touhou Project franchise, they are worlds called "Probability Worlds" by Yumemi, stating that those and parallel worlds are one and the same[634]. This essentially means that parallel worlds in Touhou are based on the concept of probability. Yumemi and Chiyuri use a "Probability Space Hypervessel" in order to travel to alternate worlds and time periods[635], further showcasing that probabiliy serves an importance.
There[636] are[637] multiple[638] occasions[639] of[640]characters[641] commenting[642] on[643] humans like[644] Reimu[645] being strong[646]. Despite this Reimu showcases physical strength that isn't superhuman, such as the fact that she cannot cut a bamboo stick while Fujiwara direclty does in front of her.
This is due to the difference between magical and physical strength.
In works like Symposium of Post-mysticism, Yuugi Hoshiguma's profile has Suika directly state that Yuugi is weaker then her in magical powers, but stronger than her physically[647], lining a clear difference between magical and physical strength.
While one can be physically stronger then another, such as how Onis are physically the strongest, magic users are still able to keep up with them due to using a different form of attack.
An example can be found with Yuugi herself, when Reimu fights against her in Subterranean Animism[648], with her acknolwedging her strength[649], something Yuugi only does to those who are truly strong[647]. This establishes even with spellcard rules, Yuugi considers Reimu a strong fighter. Reimu herself is very clearly not at an oni's physical strength, as she cannot do the things they can, however, her magical strength allows her to keep up with them.
To defend against magical based properties requires Non-Standard Defenses as it is acknowledged as not being something of standard physicality.
In Chapter 27 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Reimu proceeds to explain how reality works to Rinnosuke and Marisa, where she explains in-depth the three layers of reality.
This conversation started from discussing the mechanism of fortune, where Rinnosuke attempted to posit that the future is predetermined and that Reimu's luck was her being able to calculate in an instant the predetermined future, however Reimu had a different explanation requiring her to lecture on the mechanisms of probability[650], in her explanation, the world is made up of three layers: the physical layer that moves in accuracy with the laws of physics, the second layer that moves with the spirit, and the third layer of memory which is the recollection of events that lies within all things[29]. The memory layer rejects the loop of the physical and mental layers, the two layers the youkai conceive of the world which is why they believe history repeats itself and the future is predetermined. Since it's only possible to add to the memory layer, it's possible to completely recreate the past.
While the physical layer follows the laws of physics, the mental layer interprets the outcomes and the memory layer alters the probability, essentially creating the future, since it's impossible for memories to raech the same state as a point in the past, the future is not predetermined, thus when Reimu is able to predict how the dice will fall, she's not predicting the fall of the dice, the dice members the fact that she predicted how the dice would fall, thus due to this, Reimu entering the memory of the die-face greatly skews the results in Reimu's favor, where the results side with Reimu[651].
Thus the memory layer is essentially the most important layer that rejects the notion of loops from the previous two layers.
In the Touhou Project series, it is made very apparent that dream and reality are in truth one and the same.
In Changeability of Strange Dream, Maribel Hearn has a conversation with Renko Usami about how she is bringing objects out of her dreams[652], which Maribel posits that truth exists within subjectivity, if one can see the same sights over and over again then that's the kind of place it is as such dreams are nothing like the antonym of reality[653], where much longer ago people did not draw a distinction between dreams and reality[654], with Maribel reiterating that dreams and reality are the same[655].
In Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom it is shown that the Dream World is a separate plane[656], that in games like Antinomy of Common Flower are shown to have influence[657] on reality[658].
In the Urban Legends in Limbo finale, Sumireko notes that she is able to travel between the human world and Gensokyo whenver she sleeps, where her dream self enters Gensokyo[659] making her innately unable to be interacted with[660].

Yukari being one of the cameos in Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine
One example of this is believed to be in Touhou 02's Stage 3 Scarlet Dream ~ Scarlet Dream where it displays stars and a space-like effect in the background[664], however this is actually the World of Fantasies, the world that lies between Makai and the human world, with Genji confirming this is definetely not outerspace as Reimu can breathe just fine there[665].
This is an argument that spawns from how small the characters look in different works, though this is moreso due to the "moe" artstyle Touhou tries to capture, in many of the manga characters look far older.
Majority of characters in the series are outright shown to drink alcohol on a daily basis[666], where one needs to be at least 20 years old under Japanese law to drink, where Japanese law requires no underaged characters to be shown drinking. This is even acknowledged in the series itself with a note saying alcohol is only for those over 20 years old[667]. Thus if a character is ever seen drinking alcohol in the series, they are an adult.
The only direct non-adults in the series are Sumireko Usami, Chiyuri Kitashirakawa, and Hieda no Akyuu in her first appearance.
This statement comes from a fan translation that says this in Curiosities of Lotus Asia[668].
While the statement seems clear cut, there is another translation used instead that makes more sense with the sentence.
It instead notes that most youkai concieve of the world through these two layers, which is why they believe the future is pre-determined and history repeats itself[669]. This falls in line with the earlier disucssion of Rinnosuke claiming that he believes the future to be predetermined and Reimu needing to explain to him why that's not the case[650].
