Tifa Lockhart
Main Continuity

No matter how close we are now... We were far apart before. But when we were in the Lifestream surrounded by all those screams of anguish, I thought I heard your voice... sniff... you probably don't remember this... But deep in my heart I heard you calling my name... Or at last I thought I did...
~ Tifa Lockhart to Cloud Strife

Don't go any further! There are dangerous things in these mountains!
~ Tifa Lockhart to her cat
Stop running! I know, even if you find the kids, you might not be able to help them. Maybe something will happen that can never un-happen. That scares you, doesn't it? But you need to think about now, really take it in. Look at you! You think you've got it so damn hard! Well you hate being alone, so let people in! Sure, you might not answer the phone, but I don't see you throwing it away either! ...Which is it? A memory, or us?
~ Tifa Lockhart to Cloud Strife
Of course he is! We're talking to him, aren't we? And do you really have to shout so close to my ear?
~ Tifa Lockhart to Barret Wallace

Nobody is a better guide than me in this town.
~ Tifa Lockhart to Zack Fair and Sephiroth

You've seen how much ass I can kick.
~ Tifa Lockhart to Cloud Strife

Background

Tifa Lockhart is a primary protagonist of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. As a young woman hailing from the backwater town of Nibelheim, Tifa is the childhood friend of Cloud Strife, who becomes pivotal in Cloud's story following Sephiroth's ravaging of their hometown. She is a main member of Barret Wallace's branch of AVALANCHE, and seeks to use her martial artist background for the betterment of the planet.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Tifa’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Tifa Lockhart was a young girl born and raised in the backwater village of Nibelheim, far away from the bustling city of Midgar. Popular in her village even as a kid, Tifa constantly surrounded by friends. She was notably a childhood friend of Cloud Strife, who himself was a loner and sought her attention. When the two became teenagers, Cloud announced that he was leaving for Midgar in hopes of becoming a SOLDIER like Sephiroth, to which Tifa made him promise that he would come and recue her if she was ever in a bind.

As the years went by and all the men left Nibelheim in search of jobs, Tifa remained. She became a tour guide for Nibelheim and Mt. Nibel, priding herself as being the best guide in town. During this as well, a powerful old martial artist named Zangan took her under his wing as a student, and she quickly rose to become his greatest martial arts pupil.

By the time she turned 16, Tifa noticed that Midgar's Shinra Power Electric Company sent a platoon of troops to Nibelheim in order to investigate Mt. Nibel's Mako Reactor. Two SOLDIER members in particular were sent, Sephiroth and Zack Fair, which disappointed Tifa as she hoped to see Cloud again. Regardless, she agreed to lead Sephiroth and Zack up Mt. Nibel as per her duties as a guide.

After Sephiroth reached the Mako Reactor and learned the truth of his creation, he went mad. After seven days of restless research, Sephiroth wreaked havoc upon Nibelheim, burning it down and killing all of its citizens. This included Tifa's father, who she was helpless to protect. In a fury, she confronted Sephiroth herself, but was delivered a gruesome slash across her chest. To her surprise, Cloud appeared by her side and carried her to safety.

Following Sephiroth's death at the hands of Cloud, she was to be captured by Professor Hojo and turned into a lab experiment. Thankfully, Zangan intervened, and saved her from that fate. She ended up in Midgar, where she met up with a man named Barret Wallace, and agreed to join his Avalanche group. She also started a small bar called Seventh Heaven, which she ran as the sole bartender.

Years passed as Tifa fought alongside Avalanche, and she eventually was able to reconvene with Cloud. However, she noticed that he was acting strange, and vowed to keep an eye on him as he joined Avalanche as well. Together, they were able to destroy several of Midgar's Mako Reactors, only to find that the true threat to the planet was the resurrected Sephiroth.

Tifa became a key member in the main party that travelled the planet to stop Sephiroth from destroying the planet with Meteor, and also was the main driving force to Cloud rediscovering who he really is. With Cloud back to normal and Sephiroth defeated once more, she and him settled down in Midgar together. They agreed to take in Barret's daughter, Marlene, and also adopted a young orphan boy named Denzel.

Tifa and Cloud together ran Cloud's Delivery Service, until three years later when a horrible plague began to infest the planet known as Geostigma. Cloud, having been infected, secluded himself from his newfound family and caused Tifa endless frustration. After a long talk with him however, along with help from Aerith Gainsborough and Zack Fair from the Lifestream, Tifa was able to rejuvenate Cloud's fighting spirit. Sephiroth was defeated for good, allowing for Tifa, Cloud, Marlene and Denzel to continue their happy family life.

Powers and Abilities

Spirit Energy Physiology, which includes: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Blessed (Everyone born into the world is blessed with Spirit Energy), Sheer Will (Willpower alone can be enough to fight off Mako poisoning, and the will of Jenova. Those with a strong enough will can retain their sense of self after dying and returning to the Lifestream), Memory Manipulation, Energy Manipulation, Rage Power, & Aura (Limit Breaks are born of memories, are comprised of Spirit Energy, and are unleashed when the user's anger is pushed to the limit. They give off an aura when used), Non-Physical Interaction (Characters can interact with the souls of the Gi Tribe), Regeneration Negation (Mid-High; Jenova can regenerate itself fully so long as its cells remain, as Cloud Strife participates in Jenova's Reunion despite only containing her cells. Despite this, pieces of Jenova defeated by the heroes were unable to enact the Reunion), Immortality Negation (Type 3; Can completely kill pieces of Jenova, preventing them from regenerating), Accelerated Development (When Sephiroth fought the party far earlier than he was supposed to, the main characters could still contend with him, even after Sephiroth absorbed the Whispers and became stronger than he had ever been)

Spirit Energy Physiology, which grants Resistance to: Mind Manipulation & Soul Manipulation (Those with high willpower can resist succumbing to Jenova's will, which passively takes over one's mind and eats away at the soul, and can prevent their mind from shattering), Poison Manipulation (High willpower can prevent the toxicosis that comes with the exposure to Jenova Cells), Power Mimicry & Power Absorption (Limit Breaks cannot be copied by others. Only Zack Fair can copy Limit Breaks, though he is noted to be the only exception to this), Corruption (Types 1 & 2; Several main characters have been exposed to high amounts of Mako energy, and never became Makonoid monsters), Biological Deconstruction & Soul Manipulation (Main characters have fallen into the Lifestream and returned unscathed, without being forcefully diffused or dissolved into it, or having their spirit be eroded and dissipated), Heat Manipulation & Radiation Manipulation (Can withstand Super Nova without any negative effects of heat or radiation), Limited Disease Manipulation (Those with a will to live are unaffected by Geostigma, which infects those with a weak will)

Healing (Potions, Hi-Potions, and X-Potions all restore Cloud’s health. Ethers and Turbo Ethers restore magic power), Resurrection (Phoenix Down fully restores fallen party members when they are defeated), Resistance to Status Effect Inducement (Remedy, Elixir, and Megalixir prevents negative status effects)

Standard Equipment

*Leather Glove: Tifa's default knuckles are a set of standard leather gloves, which she's held since her time as a student of Zangan. These leather gloves have very minimal stats, and only contain one available Materia slot. Like most of Tifa's knuckles, these gloves grant her an increased critical hit ratio.

  • Metal Knuckle: A stronger pair of gloves, outfitted with metal pieces on the knuckles in order to strengthen Tifa's punches. These knuckles come with two Materia slots as opposed to one, and were purchased by Tifa in Wall Market.
  • Mythril Claw: A set of gloves with four distinct claws protruding from the knuckles, making for an extremely devastating punch. Along with having added claws, these gloves also come with three Materia slots. Tifa purchased these Mythril Claws in Kalm.
  • Grand Glove: Made of a hard, dark-colored metal, the Grand Glove is far stronger than Tifa's previous weapons, and was obtained through stealing them from Madouge enemies. The Grand Glove comes with four Materia slots.
  • Tiger Fang: A pair of gloves coming equipped with four, dark-red tiger fangs protruding from the knuckles. These knuckles come with four Materia slots, and were purchased by Tifa at Cosmo Canyon.
  • Diamond Knuckle: A pair of metal gloves, decorated with diamonds at the knuckles, which proves for an extremely powerful punch. These knuckles come not only with a more powerful attack, but also five Materia slots. Tifa purchased them in Wutai Village.
  • Dragon Claw: Gloves with claws protruding from the knuckles, though this time the claws are those of dragons. Not only are the Dragon Claws more powerful than any weapon before, but they also come with six Materia slots. Tifa purchased them at Icicle Inn.
  • Crystal Gloves: A pair gloves made purely out of a deep blue crystal. These gloves also have six Materia slots, but are more powerful than the Dragon Claw. Tifa purchased these in Mideel.
  • Motor Drive: These pairs of gloves are made of metal and have attached two motor engines to power-up Tifa's punches more than ever before. It has decent stats and only three Materia slots, but grants double Ability Point growth, meaning that she learns new techniques much quicker. Tifa found these in the Villa Cloud basement at Costa del Sol.
  • Platinum Fist: A dense metallic glove made purely of platinum, allowing for extremely powerful blunt punches. It only has moderate stats and four Materia slots, though each slot contains double Ability Point growth. Unlike her other gloves, these ones do not grant an increased critical hit ratio. Tifa found these gloves in Nibelheim.
  • Kaiser Knuckle: Black gloves embellished with a gold pattern on the knuckles. These knuckles are not only powerful, but come with eight whole Materia slots, which is more than any of her weapons other than her ultimate weapon. Tifa found these in a treasure chest in Whirlwind Cave.
  • Work Glove: A fairly standard glove designed for work, which exists as a joke weapon for Tifa. These gloves have a very high attack stat and increase Tifa's critical hit ratio far higher than the other knuckles, but has absolutely no Materia slots. Therefore, this pair of gloves acts as a double-edged sword. Tifa found these gloves in the Temple of the Ancients.
  • Powersoul: A pair of metallic green gloves. Although the Powersoul has incredibly low stats, it makes up for it with a unique ability. When Tifa's health is critically low, her attacking power is doubled. These gloves have four Materia slots, each granting double Ability Point growth. Tifa found these in Mt. Nibel.
  • Master Fist: A pair of purple metallic gloves with a red jewel in the center, and two turbo engines strapped on the back to bolster Tifa's punches. It appears to have low stats at first, but has a special ability. When Tifa is inflicted by a negative status effect, her power is either doubled or tripled. This weapon has six Materia slots, and was found in the Shinra building.
  • God's Hand: Very similar to the Master Fist in appearance, but colored red and gold. This is Tifa's second strongest weapon, and grants her perfect accuracy for her attacks. It has four Materia slots, and was found after defeating Carry Armor in the Junon Underwater Reactor.
  • Premium Heart: Tifa's ultimate, most powerful weapon. It has the highest stats of all of her equipment, and has eight whole Materia slots. It also has a unique ability where it deals more damage depending on how filled Tifa's Limit Gauge is. Tifa found this ultimate weapon on her return-trip to Midgar.

*Summon: Small red orbs of crystalized Mako energy that can be used to call upon legendary, gargantuan beasts from the distant past, to fight alongside him. This includes giant flaming behemoths like Ifrit, to huge dragons like Bahamut.

  • Magic: Small green orbs of crystalized Mako energy that can be used to enable the use of magic spells, oftentimes being elemental in nature, such as Fire/Fira/Firaga which attacks with flames.
  • Command: Small yellow orbs of crystalized Mako energy that can be used to enable the use of extra commands in battle, such as the ability to throw items or steal items from enemies.
  • Support: Small blue orbs of crystalized Mako energy that have the primary purpose of being linked to other Materia, in order to enhance their effects.
  • Independent: Small purple orbs of crystalized Mako energy that increase the stats of the user, or give them auto-abilities such as Cover.

*Potion: Restores a small amount of health.

  • Hi-Potion: Restores a large amount of health.
  • X-Potion: Restores all health.
  • Ether: Restores a small amount of magic power.
  • Turbo Ether: Restores all magic power.
  • Elixir: Restores all health and magic power.
  • Megalixir: Restores all health and magic power of the entire party.
  • Remedy: Cures all abnormal status effects, including Sleep, Poison, Sadness, Fury, Confusion, Silence, Frog, Mini, Slow, Petrify, Berserk, Paralysis, and Darkness.
  • Phoenix Down: Resurrects one party member from death.

Notable Techniques

  • Beat Rush: Tifa charges at an enemy, and unleashes a flurry of powerful punches and kicks on them.
  • Somersault: Tifa plants her foot on the opponent, before flipping backwards and kicking them upside the head during her backflip.
  • Waterkick: A powerful sweep kick attack, which has Tifa give off a wave of water with the kick.
  • Meteodrive: Tifa lifts up the enemy, and then suplexes them, resulting in an explosion as they crash into the ground.
  • Dolphin Blow: After upper-cutting the opponent with a powerful strike, Tifa summons a dolphin that flies up from the ground and strikes them as well.
  • Meteor Strike: Tifa and the opponent rocket up into the air, after which she grabs ahold of them and throws them at incredible speed down to the ground, much like a meteor.
  • Final Heaven: Tifa's final, most powerful Limit Break. Tifa rushes up to the enemy, charging a ton of energy in her fist, before punching straight through them. This creates a huge explosion of light, resulting in massive damage.

Other

Weaknesses: Tifa is extremely apprehensive when it comes to confronting personal issues, such as when she held the truth of Cloud Strife's past from him.
