It's the NegaScott!
~ Scott Pilgrim confronting NegaScott

Background

NegaScott is a reappearing character throughout the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. NegaScott is Scott Pilgrim's alter ego and dark side and represents his forgotten past mistakes. He was born after Scott was infected by The Glow prior to volume four. Though NegaScott doesn't appear that often in the series, he can be considered a major character because of what he represents.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of NegaScott’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!
Nega Scott is first seen in Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together after Scott first contracts The Glow, after discovering that Roxie Richter spent the night at Ramona Flowers's apartment. Scott ends up panicking (either as a subconscious reaction at seeing his flaws manifested or from the straightfoward panic at his sudden appearance or a mix of both) and running from him.

Nega Scott has a short appearance in Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe after Ramona leaves and Scott is staying with Stephen. Scott is brushing his teeth and he looks in the mirror, half of the mirror is him while the other half is Nega Scott.

Nega Scott is seen again in Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, when Scott on his "wilderness sabbatical" and contracts the Glow the second time, Scott tries to defeat Nega Scott, believing it to be the only way to get over Ramona and carry on with his life. Kim Pine, however, points out that if Scott forgets his past mistakes, he won't be able to learn from and he'll just keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Scott then sees a vision of Ramona, causing him and Nega Scott to stop fighting. Then, Nega Scott merges with him, allowing Scott to finally accept his faults and remember all his past memories he had previously forgotten.

Powers and Techniques

Has all the powers and abilities of Scott Pilgrim which includes:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Human Achievements (Can play bass guitar and can cook), Social Influencing (Had convinced Ramona to go out with him after she had decided not to), Willpower (Even while being beat down and feeling emotionally defeated, he empowered himself with the thought of Ramona Flowers waiting for him and one-shotted the Katayanagi Twins. Those who can access the powers of Subspace in the real world naturally require a strong will and determination to control them), Martial Arts (Fought his original self who is remarked as the best fighter in all of Province, shown skill in CQC), Acrobatics, Weapon Mastery (Scott took longsword proficiency in grade five, and can use his guitar as a blunt weapon), Perfect Guard (Managed to block and counter Matthew Patel's dive attack. When fighting the Katayanagi Twins, who were currently far stronger than him, Scott could still block their attacks), Shockwave Generation and Electricity Manipulation (His attacks create electrical shockwaves on impact with foes), Pseudo-Flight (Can stay in the air long enough to perform a 64 hit combo on the likes of Matthew Patel), Forcefield Creation (Created a forcefield that blocked all of Matthew, and his Demon Hipster Chicks', fireballs), Broadway Force and Power Nullification (Used his rhythm to out-sing Matthew and completely prevent him from attacking back), Cartoon Physics, Breaking the Fourth Wall, minor Precognition, and Cosmic Awareness (Mid Potency & Type 3 [Precognition]. Scott is aware he's in a comic book and already knows how the future events of the comic will play out due to reading his own story), Reactive Power Level (Like Ramona, Scott was able to adapt to the Glow's mental warfare-based abilities and use it for himself), Accelerated Development (Training; Physical Stats and Skill. Days before facing Lucas Lee, Scott performed a simple training routine which later allowed him to compete with Todd Ingram), Transmutation (Whenever Scott beats an evil exe they transform into Canadian currency. Turned one of Roxanne's ninja clones into a coupon by accidentally kicking her), BFR and Empathic Manipulation (After Scott defeats the evil exes, they respawn in their homes, having learned their lessons), limited Invulnerability (Scott can't kill himself or those he considers friends due to friendly fire not existing. He can die to "bad guys" however), Save and Load and Time Manipulation (Scott can access and use a save point like any video game), Abstract Existence (Type 3, possibly Type 2; NegaScott is the embodiment of Scott's past mistakes and shortcomings and will continue to reappear continuously until Scott accepts that part of him. Furthermore, it's implied NegaScott isn't a physical being bound by the world), Regeneration (At least Low-Godly. Reformed after Scott Pilgrim ran through him at a later point), Smoke Manipulation (Produced an area of smoke around himself), Illusion Manipulation (Type 1; Altered Scott's perspective of reality to insinuate a trippy experience), Stealth Mastery,Darkness Manipulation, and Pseudo-Invisibility (Can manipulate the dark to completely conceal himself from sight even in broad daylight. Appears to be made of darkness himself), Law Manipulation (Subspace can shape reality to the user's liking. An example being Scott Pilgrim and the various video game-like aspects of the world, which are a result of Subspace and its perspective-based abilities), Perspective Manipulation & Observation (Type 2; Potent Subspace users can use the perspective-based powers of Subspace to overwrite reality to fit how they view it in the real world), Avatar Creation (Has an avatar in subspace he unconsciously creates), Immortality and Resurrection (Type 5; Death is treated as an inconvenience in the universe with nobody actually dying or remaining dead), Statistics Amplification (Through Scott realizing different forms of emotions [i.e. love, understanding, etcetera] he "levels up" and amplifies himself to be able to one-shot people he could not previously one-shot or couldn't even beat. He will also be amplified just from being encouraged by things like Ramona Flowers still caring for him, allowing him to one-shot the two twins he was losing to previously), Dimensional Travel & Space-Time Manipulation (Characters can manifest doors directly to subspace, or even move between subspace and the real world through sheer force. Breaking the walls between subspace and the main universe), Mind Manipulation (Entering subspace had him enter Ramona's mind. Mind subspace is directly tied to the minds of people and can be physically altered), Irreversible Damage (Can kill ones subspace avatar and kill their true form in the process), Attack Reflection (Gave Gideon the Glow), Plot Manipulation (Narrative Manipulation & Plot Armor; Traditional; Passive; Through the power of Subspace, characters can rewrite and manipulate the plotline of their story. It's also implied throughout the Scott Pilgrim series that Scott, along with other major characters, are protected by a sort of plot armor to help them in dire situations), Subjective Reality & Dimensional Storage (Whatever the user can imagine will be created in subspace. For instance, Scott manifested his love for Ramona as the Power of Love, which he can pull from and store in Subspace), Portal Creation & Summoning (As the powers of the characters originate from Subspace, they can create portals or summon beings and objects from their subspace), Abstract Existence (Type 3, possibly Type 2; NegaScott is the embodiment of Scott's past mistakes and shortcomings and will continue to reappear continuously until Scott accepts that part of him. Furthermore, it's implied NegaScott isn't a physical being bound by the world), Regeneration (At least Low-Godly. Reformed after Scott Pilgrim ran through him at a later point), Smoke Manipulation (Produced an area of smoke around himself), Illusion Manipulation (Type 1; Altered Scott's perspective of reality to insinuate a trippy experience), Stealth Mastery and Darkness Manipulation (Can manipulate the dark to completely conceal himself from sight even in broad daylight. Appears to be made of darkness himself)

Resistance to Severe Pain (Able to take multiple sword slashes from Gideon Graves while arguing with Ramona Flowers. Took a brutal beating from the Katayanagi Twins), Mind Manipulation (Can survive inside Honest Ed's without breaking down which even a trained psychic like Todd Ingram couldn't do. Should naturally resist conventional mind manipulation as his mind harbors subspace), Sleep Manipulation (Despite listening to Crash and the Boys' song "Last Song Kills Audience", which forces people asleep, Scott was not affected by it), Electricity Manipulation and Sound Manipulation (No-selled Todd's electrical shock and bass soundwaves with no notable injuries), Extreme Colds (Lives in Canada and can traverse through a blizzard), Transmutation (Doesn't turn into money upon dying to Gideon Graves), Irreversible Damage (Even when being attacked and killed in Subspace by Gideon Graves, neither Scott or Ramona died in the real world).
Resistance to Sealing, Corruption, Memory Manipulation, and Power Nullification (After accepting and absorbing Negascott, the Glow's mental warfare abilities were nullified), Plot Manipulation (Narrative Manipulation & Plot Armor; Traditional) and Erasure (Conceptual Erasure; Characters are unaffected by the events in the plotline being altered and erased entirely), Perspective Manipulation, Observation, Law Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation, and Subjective Reality (Type 2 and 3. Even after being re-infected with the Glow, severing his connection to Subspace, he was still able to overpower Gideon for a brief moment)

All previous powers and abilities to an unknown extent. Regeneration (Low-Godly. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will), Immortality & Time Travel (Type 3, enhanced 5, 6, 8, & 9. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will. Concepts such as death are irrelevant to them as even if one dies they will just be sent into subspace. Even spirits can freely pass through and from Subspace. All damage done to a subspace avatar means nothing to them, Scott could lose his limbs in subspace and be cut in half and would still be perfectly fine. One's subspace is directly linked to their entire lives, allowing for numerous versions of the same being to exist simultaneously. Furthermore, psychic energies can traverse through the timestream to the present era, establishing further that mental figments of one's past self can travel through time), Acausality (Irregular Causality; Subspace is a different space-time where all rules are different (including death), thus it should by extension be a different system of causality), Enhanced Perspective Manipulation and Observation (Type 2 and 3. Perception is Law. People, items, and Mind Subspace itself are based on the nature of the person's mind, therefore, however a person imagines Subspace is how it will appear. A good example is Scott's Dream Desert: this location is repeatedly used as a metaphor for Scott's loneliness but also is his projected image of Subspace at that time which Ramona is able to pass through), Law Manipulation (One’s subspace operates under their rules and systems which can extend even to the real world with characters like Gideon affecting Ramona’s Subspace), Reality Warping and Mind Manipulation (While Mind Subspace allows for others' own projected images of themselves to take on other forms, the individual whom the Subspace resides in retains all power and control within said mind. Through this, the character can shape themselves and Subspace to their liking all through their thoughts, perspectives, and desires), Power Nullification (A user of Subspace can completely nullify any connection an opponent has in that Subspace, regardless of if they're more powerful or not. This is how Ramona was able to expel Gideon despite him being a master of Subspace and able to manipulate it inside anyone's mind), Dimensional Travel (Can enter his avatars at any point if he so desires even after death), Power Manifestation (Gideon Graves was able to create the Glow from subspace and use it to directly counter mind subspace)

Light Manipulation and Empowerment (The Glow causes anyone infected with it to have their heads spontaneously glow when under emotional tension. Characters like Scott Pilgrim have been able to use the Glow to empower himself), Energy Manipulation (Gideon was able to fire energy beams of the Glow out at multiple targets), Sealing and Mind Manipulation (Type 2 outside of Subspace, Type 1 in Subspace. The Glow is described as a weapon of "emotional warfare" that seals you within your own mind subspace to face your issues), Creation and Duplication (Those inflicted with the Glow will have a dark alter ego manifest of themselves that reflects their insecurities), Empathic Manipulation and Corruption (Type 2 and 3. The Glow corrupts the mind of the inflicted to act very bitter and irregular towards people), Memory Manipulation and Duplication (The Glow allowed Gideon to manipulate and alter the memories of Scott Pilgrim. The Glow caused multiple incarnations of Ramona Flowers to exist in her head based on the parts of her that belonged to herself and Gideon), Teleportation and Dimensional Travel (Ramona Flowers was able to "ride" the glow between subspace and reality. This also allows her to teleport wherever she wants), Power Nullification and Existence Grounding (Scott was able to use the Glow to depower Gideon to his base form self, reducing his Subspace control enough for Ramona to overpower his influence), Enhanced Perspective Manipulation, Observation, Law Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation, Pocket Reality Manipulation, and Subjective Reality (Type 2 and 3. The Glow allowed Gideon to take hold of Ramona Flowers' mind subspace and become "all powerful" to his liking)

Optional Equipment

  • Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003 Bass Guitar: A guitar borrowed from his younger brother Lawrence West; Scott's Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003 Bass Guitar is the guitar he uses throughout volume 1 to 5 before returning it to his brother. Although its primary purpose it to be used for playing in his band, Sex Bob-omb (and later Shatterband), Scott can weild it as a blunt weapon or create soundwaves to combat and damage opponents.
  • Extra Life: The Extra Life is a seemingly silly item that Scott Pilgrim picks up at the end of Volume 3 after defeating Todd Ingram. It seems like just another video game reference, but one that becomes integral to the story in Book 6. Without the life, the story would have ended with Scott dying then respawning in his own home and would’ve never led to the reunion with Ramona Flowers or anything else that followed. The Extra Life, similiar to other video game lifes, is shaped like Scott Pilgrim's head.
  • Power of Love: The Power of Love is a katana-like sword Scott Pilgrim unlocks in volume 4 after confessing his love for Ramona Flowers, causing him to level up. During this same level up, Scott also received Guts +2, Heart +3, Smarts +1, and Will +1. The sword counts as a longsword, for which Scott chose as a proficiency back in grade 5 over the skateboard proficiency. In Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, Gideon Graves steals the Power of Love from Scott, however Ramona obtains the sword following her return into the story.
  • Food: Food acts very similar to stat increases in many role-playing games. In Soctt's case, food and beverages can increase stats such as Strength/Force, Intelligence, To Hit, Speed, Will, etcera.

Notable Techniques

Innate Techniques

  • Mental Manipulation: Begins to warp the opponent's perspective of reality, disorientating them and making them more vulnerable to attacks.
  • Darkness Manipulation: (Possibly Anti Matter Manipulation is implied within the game) Is NegaScott's uncanny ability to control darkness in order to completely cloak himself in broad daylight, essentially making him invisible.
  • Reversal: Scott blocks the opponent's attack with his arm and counters with a powerful punch.
  • Air Juggle: Scott launches his opponent into the air, he then proceeds to jump after them and punch them 63 times before dealing a 64th final punch that launches them downwards.
  • Barrier: Scott pulls his arms up as if to blocks incoming attacks, which summons a large invisible shield that blocks all incoming attacks from any direction.

First level up

  • Power of Love: A supernatural longsword Scott can summon from his chest. Unlocked when he confessed his love for Ramona Flowers. It increases his "stats", making him more powerful and allows him to compete with other swordsmen.
    • Ninja Slash: A reference to the opening cutscene in Ninja Gaiden. Scott dashes forward at an incredible speed and slashes his opponent in half.
    • Heal: When using the Power of Love, the sword can heal Scott's wounds, restoring him to his peak.

Subspace Abilities

  • Subspace Transportation: Scott can transport himself into the "Subspace". The Subspace is a realm that sits below and inside our own with a wide variety of uses. There are two main types of the Subspace:
    • Transport Subspace: A realm closely linked to the real world, usually taking a random and fantasy-like appearance. Can be used to travel quickly due to distance in the Subspace being different to distance in the real world*. Can also be used to store a virtually infinite number of objects. Due to its nature, it can be useful for hiding, fleeing, preparing or aiding in a battle.
    • Mind Subspace: Separate realms located in every person's mind, essentially their subconscious and where their dreams take place. It's appearance and nature relate to that person's personality and emotional state; a person in real life can influence their respective Subspace and vice-versa. Can be used to transport oneself next to that person or harm them/help them without being physically with them.

With the Glow

Described as a powerful weapon of "emotional warfare", the Glow manipulates the Subspace inside the minds of those it infects, causing them to become overwhelmed by their personal issues. The Glow suppresses positive emotions such as friendship and love, and simultaneously enhances negative feelings like suspicion, jealousy, and self-loathing. As such, the Glow can be used to poison or destroy people and their relationships. It also makes a person more susceptible to Gideon's manipulations. Gideon demonstrates this when he uses the Glow to make Scott and Ramona argue during the final battle. It appears that the Glow can lie "dormant" inside the mind of an infected person after the effects of their initial exposure wear off, as evidenced by Ramona's (and later Scott's) frequent episodes of spontaneously sporting the Glow throughout the series. The Glow is triggered by intense emotional moments, like in Volume 5 when Ramona is faced with the prospect of Scott having cheated on her with Knives, and is also experienced by Scott in Volume 6 after Kim points out the mistakes he made while they were dating in high school (namely beating up Simon Lee and leaving for Toronto without telling her), however the Glow's effects can also be activated without even while the likes of Scott and Ramona are both thinking straight and clear.

The effects of the Glow on the infected subject vary depending on the subject's level of mental stress and trauma, but the only way to get rid of it permanently is for the inflicted to actually come to terms with his or her personal issues. Despite this, it is possible to still have the Glow and experience its effects even after coming to terms with these issues, like how Scott was reinfected with the Glow after facing NegaScott. While Gideon is able to spread the Glow via touch, he can also fire it at people in a projectile form as demonstrated when he sprays the crowd at Chaos Theatre with it in the final book.

Other

Standard Tactics: Like Scott, NegaScott primarly uses his martial arts experience to best his opponents in hand-to-hand combat. Unlike Scott however, NegaScott will use his illusionary mastery to confuse his targets and manipulate darkness to conceal himself before rushing the opponent.

Weaknesses: As NegaScott is essentially an evil version of Scott, he has no remorse for those he attacks.
