“ | The day you inherited the title of Vampire Hunter... I felt as if a wall had been erected between us... and for that reason I set out on my expedition. I wanted to be better than you and relieve you of your fate. | „ |
~ Maxim Kischine to Juste Belmont |
Background
After Dracula’s second defeat at the hands of Simon Belmont in 1698, the people viewed him as a hero and began gathering around him. Soon enough, a peaceful village formed around the Belmont household. Nearly 30 years passed and the village became home to the powerful Kischine Clan, and the newest member of the clan, Maxim Kischine. Maxim grew up as an aspiring vampire hunter, alongside his friends Juste Belmont and Lydie Erlanger.
Juste in particular was the grandson of Simon, and thus viewed as a prodigy. Maxim, wanting to become one of the greats, made himself Juste’s rival. The two eventually competed for who would inherit the Vampire Killer whip, but Juste outclassed Maxim in every competition they had; inheriting the whip over Maxim.
Maxim, frustrated and jealous by Juste’s victory, decided to leave on a training expedition, and Juste had not heard from him in two years; until one day, suddenly, Maxim reappeared in town with wounds all over his body, and told Juste that Lydie had been kidnapped and taken to Dracula’s Castle. Astonished that Dracula’s Castle had risen despite it not having been a century since his previous defeat, Juste rushed over to the castle as fast as he could.
Maxim’s training expedition was actually a journey to find Dracula’s body parts and resurrect him, so that he could prove himself by taking the Dark Lord down. However, Maxim was possessed by Dracula in the process, and stole Lydie himself.
Thus, Maxim had developed two separate personalities; Maxim (his regular self,) and Dark Maxim (his possessed form.) This created two alternate dimensional versions of Dracula’s Castle, Castle A and Castle B, which Juste was forced to traverse. After doing so, and conquering both entire castles, Juste finally confronted Dark Maxim in his chambers. However, during their duel, Maxim noticed his bracelet on Juste’s arm, and regained his mind.
There, it was discovered that the being that possessed Maxim was not Dracula himself, but an unknown Wraith who took over Dracula’s form and powers. After the Dracula Wraith fuses himself with the parts of Dracula’s body, he and Juste have one final duel, where Juste fortunately prevails.
Being taken by Juste, Maxim was able to escape the crumbling castle and slowly came to his senses. Maxim, ashamed by what he had done, apoligzed to Juste and Lydie, promising to put their friendship back on track and return peacefully to the village.
Maxim’s future is entirely unknown, although it is known that his Stellar Sword ends up in the hands of the legendary Eric Lecarde; who himself would then pass it onto the vampire hunter, Jonathan Morris.
Personality
- Need to Prove Himself: When Juste inherited the title of Vampire Hunter, Maxim felt that a wall had been erected between him and Juste, and thus he went out to gather Dracula's remains and destroy them, in order to prove himself an equal of Juste[1].

Notable Techniques
Somersault
A somersault Maxim can do while in midair, makes him invulnerable to attacks though it costs magic to use.
Double Spirit
Maxim's special move, he moves so fast that while his image can be seen in the center of the screen, two afterimages cross and attack everything on the screen, likely killing anything hit by this on screen.
Healing
Maxim bathes in a great amount of light around him as he recovers from any injuries he's sustained.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Regular: Maxim will use his quick sword strikes along with his shurikens, acrobatic movement and special attacks such as double spirit.
- Possessed by Dracula's Wraith: Maxim does much of the same strategy, with more vicious and bloodlusted intent.
Weaknesses
- Unique Weaknesses: Maxim’s jealousy and pride can overcome him, which is what lead to his possession by the Dracula Wraith.
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[209]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[210], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[211]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[212].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's Doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[213]. Simon's Doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero.
Trivia
- In the bad ending, Evil Maxim's portrait was utilized when he told Juste that he would have to force him to change his mind (referring to Juste putting Maxim out of his misery), implying that his true persona barely restrained his evil persona enough to yell that out. This was confirmed in the Futabasha Castlevania: Byakuya no Concerto Official Guide, citing that he retained his "true nature" despite already becoming dangerously close to succumbing to his evil self.
- In Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, an item known as the War Fatigues strongly resembles Maxim's own coat he wears. This is implied to be the same one or an identical one due to the item's location: it is placed inside the Entrance's castle grounds of Castle B right beside the castle's main gate. This is the exact same spot Maxim was standing on in Castle A at the beginning of the game.
- Maxim is the only boss in Harmony of Dissonance to not drop a Magic Crystal (if one does not also count Dracula Wraith's first form. However, Dracula Wraith's second form does drop a Magic Crystal).
- The weapon is called the Stella Sword in Japan. Stella is Latin for "Star".
- In Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, the weapon can be hacked in the sub-weapon slot for Juste Belmont and Simon Belmont, though they cannot utilize its attack. If Juste has the star sub-weapon and picks up another sub-weapon, the dropped star visually turns into a High Potion. Collecting this High Potion will make Juste obtain the unusable Star sub-weapon.
- Reversibly, Maxim can use cheats to pick-up sub-weapons but is unable to utilize them except his own star sub-weapon.

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "From the time they stepped into the mountains, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent in the air.
Even though it is still far away, their bodies seemed to squeal [run away].
There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children." - ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.
And her body was telling her [do not go] as her leg muscles were petrified like stone." - ↑ Castlevania: Bloodlines Stage 6-2 First Room

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "“Uh……aa……Mi……chelle……”
That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
“Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
However-----
Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul." - ↑ Haunted Castle Revisited Dominus Collection
