~ Character Data on Lloyd |
Background
Lloyd (alternatively Loid) is one of the main characters of MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings). He lives in Thanksgiving and goes to school at Twinkle Elementary School. Although he cannot use PSI, he is skilled at using various mechanical objects and explosives.
Lloyd is normally the second character to join Ninten's party, but he can be the third member to join if the player chooses to get to Ana first. Lloyd is the only character that must join Ninten in order to complete the game, as he is needed to make all the areas north of Thanksgiving accessible, as well as being needed to access EVE.

- Air Gun: The strongest gun Lloyd can get. Raises his offense by 46.
Other Equippable Weapons
- Boomerang: Weapon anyone can equip, raises offense by 32.
- Slingshot: Ranged weapon that raises offense by 7. Has a higher chance of missing then other weapons.
*Bomb: The Bomb is an item only usable by Lloyd, and does about 60-80 HP of PK Fire damage to all enemies. The PSI equivalent of PK Fire Beta.
*Repel Ring: One look at this strange ring will drive away weak enemies.

Other
Standard Tactics: Lloyd utilizes weapon based attacks mainly due to his physical strength not being on par with Ninten's.
Weaknesses: One of the 2 party members that cannot perform PSI. Also naturally weaker then the rest of the party, asides from Ana in terms of strikes. Can contract colds just from people simplying coughing near him or sneezing near him. Their astral forms are unable to interact with anything, where it's shown characters like Jeff being unconscious makes him unable to fix broken items as his conscious physical body is not there.
Note
- There is some conflict over whether or not MOTHER cast actually become genuine ghost or not, as the games at time makes mention that the characters are just unconscious along with the resurrection system in the game requires going to the hospital where they note the person has been unconscious in there, and thus some write it off as the ghost are not actually there but sprite place ins. However, the ghost sprites are acknowledged by NPCs, with the mouse in the department store noting he has an eerie feeling that a ghost is walking with the party whenever unconscious party members are around, Paula's dad can sense her presence in the room when she's unconscious, and Poo directly notes he's communicating with Ness' soul if he comes to the party while Ness is unconscious. With this in mind, it is accepted the characters create an astral projection to keep observing the party on their journey while they are unconscious in the hospital. This is further supported with the MOTHER 2 cast being able to have their souls leave their bodies. In MOTHER 3 this does not exist as there's rarely hospitals around so they are just unconscious on the floor with the head party member dragging them around.
Explanations
- A good chunk of the scans used on this profile are from the MOTHER 1+2 fan translation, translated by Clyde Mandelin (Tomato), he is a professional translator, widely known for his legendsoflocalization post on EarthBound or MOTHER 2.
Miscellaneous Feats
Trivia
- Lloyd's blood type listed as AB MOTHER Encyclopedia[10].
- Lloyd (excluding Pippi) is the only party member in the game required to join Ninten in order to complete EarthBound Beginnings, being essential in clearing the path to the Thanksgiving train station and reaching EVE.
- His Japanese name is Roido, which is a pun on roidomegane, meaning "round glasses with plastic rims", the kind of glasses he wears. His name may have been localized as Lloyd, and ultimately Lloyd because in Japanese, R and L are pronounced interchangeably, and Lloyd sounds like the name Lloyd. As a further coincidence, Lloyd means 'grey' in Welsh, which happens to be the color of his hair.
- Lloyd has the second-fewest primary weapons in the entire Mother series, only having two; the Stun Gun and the Air Gun. For comparison, Poo only has one.
- Some people theorize that Lloyd was Dr. Andonuts as a child, as they look similar, and are shown to hide in garbage cans. However, this is unlikely due to Dr. Andonuts being far older than Lloyd, and EarthBound taking place in 199X, only around a decade after Beginnings, which takes place in 1988.

- R-7037 - Fight
- Conditions: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana were all within a tank and teamed up.
- Location: Yuca Desert
- Note: Ninten and co. solely won due to being in a tank, if one tries to fight it outside of the tank, it will easily one-shot them.
- R-7038XX - Fight
- Conditions: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana were helped by EVE.
- Location: Mt. Itoi
- Note: Not even EVE was strong enough to harm R-7038XX, needing to explode in order to take out R-7038XX.
- Giygas - Fight
- Conditions: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana all teamed up, needing to sing to defeat Giygas.
- Location: Top of Mt. Itoi
- Note: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana could only defeat Giygas through singing Maria's melody, filling Giygas with guilt and causing him to run away, without this, they would've had no chance to win.

- ↑ Lloyd even now can't forget the paralyzing thrill that ran through his three-year old body when he saw the spine of this book. On top of that, he now seems to even think, "I am none other than the reincarnation of Einstein, the author of this book!"
- ↑ With Lloyd being that way, what raised his stakes a bit is accorded to his grand invention, "Bathroom TV (dedicated to Einstein)" when he was four years old. It was something where, upon using four mirrors, you could enjoy what was on the TV screen in the living room while you soaked in the bathtub. I guess you could say the words inside the parentheses are proof that he received extraordinary influence from the "Theory of Relativity" he found on his father's bookshelf when he was 3.
- ↑ Listen well, Ness. I am about to tell you something so important that you should probably write this down.
Ready? You are a chosen one. Your destiny is not yours alone… It is part of a universal “system”. - ↑ In MOTHER 2, Paula’s mom tells Ness not to worry about Paula, because “God is with her”. In EarthBound, this was localized to “She has a guardian angel, it seems.”
It’s not a big deal, and it’s pretty well-known that NOA didn’t want any religious stuff in their games back then, so the change is to be expected. I think the guardian angel line sounds better, anyway. But yeah, there’s no way NOA would’ve let a mention of the Christian God fly in their games back then.
But note that even though she mentions God in MOTHER 2, there are no real serious religious themes in the game. So don’t take this one change out of context and make a big deal out of it 😛 - ↑ In MOTHER 2, during part of Paula’s first prayer, she says something like, “Please, God, if you’re there…” or possibly even, “Please, God, if you’re real…”
In EarthBound, this religious reference got the smack-down and was trimmed to just, “Please…” - ↑ The truth of the universe travels the cosmos like a grain and like a wave and speaks to the universes known as man.
