This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Hmm... You have a peculiar smell. It isn't human or devil. Did you do this?
~ Makima to Denji during their first meeting

I came here to kill the zombie devil. I'm a public safety devil hunter. You have two choices. One, be killed by me as a devil. Or two, be kept by me as a human. If you're my pet, I'll give you food.
~ Makima's offer to Denji

Open your mouth. You probably won't be able to forget the taste of vomit for the rest of your life. But don't worry. You're going to experience all kinds of first tastes, from now until the day you die. You won't have time to remember how vomit tastes. For starters, your first indirect kiss... ...Is the taste of a cola-flavored chupa chups.
~ Makima cheering up Denji

Your necessary evil... ...Is just an excuse to justify your own crimes. Those excuses are unnecessary to society. The truly necessary evils are always kept collared and controlled by the state.
~ Makima to the Yakuza

In exchange for you living a normal life... ...Pochita gave you a heart... What you made with Pochita wasn't a promise. It was a contract. I asked myself... ...How I could break that contract. How could I make you so hurt that you'd no longer be capable of living a normal life? So damaged that you'd never be able to bounce back for as long as you live? Quite the challenge isn't it? After all, you felt plenty of happiness even living in extreme poverty with Pochita. So I decided to begin... ...With making you a lot happier. I gave you a job and money... ...And fed you lots of delicious food. I provided a family that would get along with you. Aki became a good big brother to you. And Power, the bratty little sister. I'd make that level of happiness your new normal... ...And then destroy the whole thing. Any happiness or normality you experience from this point on? I'll be the one to create it all and destroy it all. If you overcome your grief and make friends, I'll kill them immediately. If you get married and start a family, I won't allow your wife and children to live long. Because the time has come for you to atone for your sins. I looked into your past. Children's brains are really quite incredible. You see, they can hide bad memories away behind a door without the child even knowing it. You hid what you did behind a door for survival's sake, right? Because you'd never be able to lead a normal life otherwise. Your father... ...didn't kill himself. You killed him, didn't you? Your father was drunk and nearly killed you. You really had no choice but to kill him. But the other grown-ups wouldn't get their money back like that. So they made it out to be a suicide. You were finally able to open the door... You helped me kill Power. There might have been a way to save Hayakawa, but you killed him too. You even murdered your own father. Someone like you has no right to wish for a normal life, do they?
~ Makima to Denji revealing her true nature to him

Background

Makima was the main antagonist of the Public Safety Saga in Chainsaw Man. She was a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter who took Denji in as her human pet.

She is later revealed to be the Control Devil who embodies the fear of control or conquest. Following her death, she is reincarnated as Nayuta.

Nayuta is the reincarnation of the Control Devil following Makima's death. To prevent her from becoming similar to her previous incarnation, she was taken by Kishibe to be raised by Denji as Denji's younger sister. She is a recurring character in the Academy Saga.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Makima’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Intro Arc
Makima went to exterminate the Zombie Devil but saw someone beat her to it. She then saw Denji as Chainsaw Man and told him he had a smell neither human or devil and asked him who he was, but he only told her to hug him. As she did, Denji turned back into human. Makima then told him that she is a Devil Hunter and that Denji has two options: be killed by her or kept as her pet, upon hearing he will be fed, he agreed.

While travelling in the car, Denji's stomach growled and Makima told him she will buy him some food. When they reached the store and ordered food, a man rushed in and asked for help. Hearing the situation and that her food is ready, she sends out Denji to deal with the situation, since he was her pet. After Denji returned, she complimented him for being a good pet. She explains that there are a few precedents like his, but there is still no name for his situation, she also states that since she had a good nose she could sense that Pochita was still alive in him. She then fed him the soggy udon, as he couldn't himself. Denji then asked her what was her type, to which she responded it's him.

Makima introduces Denji to the other members of Division 4 that he will be living with, Aki Hayakawa and the Blood Fiend Power.

Bat Devil arc
Makima commands Denji and Power to patrol and search for a devil. After Power recklessly kills the Sea Cucumber Devil, Makima goes to the place where she killed that devil. Then, she tells Denji and Power about the consequences of killing a devil which was already being searched by the police pointing out that they should receive a punish for what happened, being in this case death sentence, however she decides to make a blind eye and pretend they didn't break the rules giving the two of them a warning so they can behave better and then leaves.

Later that night, Makima is in her office hearing the report of Aki Hayakawa about the defeat Bat and Leech Devils that afternoon. Before he leaves, Makima states that Aki has become more flexible, something that he denies. The next day in the morning Makima has a phone call and tells Aki that from now on Power will stay at his place and live with them.

At the HQ, Makima asks Denji to do some paperkwork. She notices him distracted while filling the papers and asks him if something has him worried. Right after hearing Denji's concern, Makima approaches and bites one of his fingers and makes him touch her chest. Then she motivates Denji to hunt the Gun Devil by promising to grant him any wish. She then commands Division 4 to kill the Eternity Devil and retrieve the piece of the Gun Devil's flesh in its possession.

Eternity Devil arc
She then goes out drinking with the team in celebration of their victory. Makima is on her way to meet with members of the Special Division 1 when her fellow Devil Hunters are attacked by followers of the Gun Devil.

Katana Man arc
She survives getting shot in the head thanks to an unknown ability or contract and then kills some of the assailants thanks to a different ability that requires her to sacrifice criminals condemned to life in prison.

After the attack, Makima introduces Denji and Power to the strongest Devil Hunter in the Special Division 1, known only as Master. After they complete their training, Master and Makima have dinner where he accuses her of using Denji and Power as pawns in her schemes and questions her allegiance to humanity.

Later, Makima meets with members of the Yakuza and forces them to disclose the names of the people who attacked Division 4 by presenting them with a bag filled with the eyeballs of their loved ones and refuses to return them to a healthy state if they do not cooperate.

After successfully infiltrating the hideout and capturing the Katana Man Makima is seen reporting to a superior. She reported that Sawatari who was a former Private Devil Hunter contracted with the Gun Devil and passed guns to the Yakuza, in exchange for which she wanted the Chainsaw Devil's heart. She also reports that Sawatari committed suicide before they could interrogate her and that they obtained 1.4 Kg of Gun Devil fragments. Which when combined with their already obtained 5 Kg was moving towards the main body.

She later examines Power and says that her blood must be drained to keep her in check. She assigns Beam as Denji's partner until the blood draining is complete. Makima then invites Denji on a date, they watch movies together and are mostly unmoved with them. In the final movie both her and Denji are moved to tears. After that movie, Denji asks Makima if she thinks that he has a heart to which she responds by placing her head on his chest and saying that he does.

Bomb Girl arc
Makima is seen partnering Aki with the Angel Devil stating that he is the most powerful member of the 4th excluding Kishibe. She also tells Aki that the Angel Devil is lazy and that he doesn't have to be friendly with him, only to use him well as he could be a valuable asset.

She intercepts Reze when she is going to meet Denji at the Café using her ability to travel as a mischief of rats. She tells Reze that she too likes the country mouse and talks about going to help a friend who lives in the country, stating that catching the mice which ruin the fields gives her peace of mind. She disarms Reze with the help of the Angel Devil who is waiting on the rooftop above the alleyway. She is standing in a pool of Reze's blood when she tells the Angel Devil that she told him to bring Aki with him. She sees it as considerate that he didn't bring Aki along as he wouldn't have wanted to kill a woman.

International Assassins arc
Makima visits Denji's apartment and invites him, Aki and Power on a vacation to Enoshima. Denji and Aki readily agree and Power tries to worm her way out of it to no success. A group of Public Safety devil hunters enter the apartment and inform Makima of a development; Denji in his Chainsaw Devil form has become public knowledge due to Reze's efforts which Makima is angry at.

She comments that America and China will both be after Denji due to his rarity as someone who is neither devil nor fiend and that the Soviet Union likely did this so that no matter who captured Denji he would be away from Makima. Makima postpones the trip to Enoshima, informing Denji that he will be without freedom for the foreseeable future. She gives orders to the other devil hunters for Kusakabe and Tamaoki from Miyagi Public Safety Devil Extermination Division 2 and Subaru from Kyoto Public Safety Devil Extermination Division 1 be brought in, and that Hirofumi Yoshida is to be hired from the civilian sector in order to protect Denji.

On her way out, she informs Aki that the operation to kill the Gun Devil will commence next year and that he should try not to die in the meantime since they will need everybody for that operation.

Makima speaks with Kishibe about the potential threats that will be coming their way, including a rumor than Quanxi is coming which Kishibe is unhappy with. She states that it is no use taking precautions against her and that the one they really need to be worrying about is Germany's Santa Claus who is rumored to have died of old age, but is still the biggest threat out there.

Makima, alongside Beam and Prinz, take care of a large number of Santa Claus' puppet dolls in a ruined building. She orders Beam to go assist Denji and tells Prinz to make sure to save Denji no matter what, and to recover the bodies of any devil hunters who perish.

Later Makima sits atop a pile of puppet corpses and shows an awareness that Denji and several other devil hunters are under assault from the Darkness Devil in Hell. She states that the Darkness Devil is intentionally bidding her to come and try to save them. Prinz, who has been defeated already by the Darkness Devil begs Makima not to come but after Makima gives the order, Prinz dutifully summons her by unzipping her upper body open and allowing Makima to emerge in Hell. Makima and the Darkness Devil point at each other, exchanging attacks, causing Makima's finger to break and the Darkness Devil to begin bleeding profusely.

Makima makes her way over to Tolka's corpse and exchanges another round of attacks with the Darkness Devil which causes Makima's entire right arm to contort and break. She touches Tolka's body and forces him to speak to the Hell Devil; making an offer to exchange everything in order to be returned to Earth. The Darkness Devil summons a black blade which pierces Makima's chest just as the Hell Devil's hand sweeps through and returns all of the survival devil hunters and bodies to the top of the department store on Earth.

Makima cradles Denji as the real Santa Claus - now transformed into a monstrous doll form - jumps up to the roof and faces her. Makima greets Santa Claus and pulls Denji's chainsaw cord, triggering his transformation. She advises him that since the enemy has ingested a piece of the Darkness Devil's flesh that no attacks in the darkness will work, and then bids him to defend her. Denji loyally responds with a "Woof!" and jumps into combat against Santa Claus.

Once Denji manages to defeat Santa Claus, he is approached by Quanxi and her fiends. They instantly surrender upon Makima's arrival, with Quanxi begging that her harem be spared. Makima decapitates them without hesitation.

Gun Devil arc
With much of the squad still reeling from their encounter with the Darkness Devil, Makima reveals that the Gun Devil has been located and in fact has been largely divided up between the world's most powerful nations to be used as a weapon. The President of the United States, under contract with the Gun Devil, sacrifices one year of every citizen's lifespan in order to issue a command: attack Japan and kill Makima, who is viewed as a serious threat. Shortly before the attack, Makima uses her powers to compel Aki and the Angel Devil to serve as her pawns. In addition, she summons several deceased devil hunters and is able to use their devil contracts by proxy. The Gun Devil appears in Japan and unleashes a devastating attack causing many casualties and large scale damage. Although the ensuing battle is not shown, it is implied that Makima is able to weaken the Gun Devil enough for it to possess Aki's corpse and turn him into a fiend.

Control Devil arc
After Denji is forced to kill Aki in order to defeat the Gun Fiend, he goes to Makima seeking comfort and direction, stating that he is too depressed and detached to make his own decisions anymore and would prefer to be told what to do like a pet. At her residence, Makima is shown to be the owner of many energetic and affectionate dogs. She tells Denji matter-of-factly that she has invited Power over as well, and when Denji opens the door, Makima will kill her. True to her word, as Power arrives with a birthday cake for Denji, Makima instantly blasts her apart, leaving only her head and legs. She explains to Denji that she deliberately planned to provide him with a family unit and various sources of happiness, only to rip them away in order to break him. Ultimately, her goal is to mentally destroy Denji in order to make him an unsuitable host for Pochita, thus seperating him from the Chainsaw Devil.

Meanwhile, Kishibe and his team are plotting to attack Makima, who is revealed to be the Control Devil. Makima states that she is a Chainsaw Devil fanatic, and would either like to control him or be consumed by him. She would also state that trying to kill her is futile as a contract she made with The Prime Minister of Japan makes her nigh-immortal. The moment anyone is able to land a fatal blow on Makima, a citizen of Japan would be sacrificed instead through non-suspicious means. At Makima's command, Denji, having apparently lost himself, transforms into the fully-powered Chainsaw Devil. Kishibe's men summon the Hell Devil by sacrificing their lives, but the Chainsaw Devil's strength is overwhelming.

In an effort to subjugate the Chainsaw Devil, who has gone berserk, Makima calls upon a group of weapon hybrids, several of whom were former enemies presumed deceased (including Reze, Quanxi, and Katana Man) but who now serve her with adoration. Once again, the Chainsaw Devil largely overwhelms his attackers, though he is weakened when Makima points out the general public's fear that powers him is waning, as they now view him as a hero. She uses the Angel Devil to create a powerful spear and launches it at the Chainsaw Devil, impaling him.

However, the Chainsaw Devil is revived after Pochita has an inner conversation with the remnants of Power, whose existence persists in Denji due to him having consumed her blood prior. Pochita grants her the ability to emerge as the fully-powered Blood Devil, but she is no match for Makima. Power is able to hide Denji in a dumpster before dying.

After being recovered by Kishibe, "Denji" battles Makima and her minions for the final time at a mass gravesite. Makima is perplexed and disappointed that Denji's personality has seemingly resurfaced. She is able to defeat him and rip out his heart. Having achieved her goal, she rests for a moment with a cigarette, but is attacked by Denji who appears from a pile of corpses, wielding a chainsaw imbued with Power's blood. After dealing Makima a fatal blow, he tells her that she had been battling Pochita, while he hid and waited for an opportunity to strike. When Kishibe arrived, Denji apologized, before pointing the chainsaw at her, seemingly ending her.

Following Makima's defeat, Denji reveals that his plan to circumvent her regenerative powers is to consume her, making various meals from her remains. Conversing with Kishibe after the fact, Denji claims this is an act of love rather than revenge. Furthermore, Denji explains his theory that Makima only perceived people by scent, and he believed she was so indifferent towards him that she never remembered his, thus allowing him to ambush her. Kishibe tells Denji that a new Control Devil, already reincarnated, has been brought over from China. The Control Devil has taken the form of a young black-haired girl called Nayuta. Kishibe goes on to say that Makima is effectively gone, and this new Control Devil must not be allowed to go down a similar path. He leaves Nayuta in Denji's care.

Justice Devil arc
Nayuta is seen sleeping with Denji and their dogs while Yuko was beheaded by a figure resembling Chainsaw Man.

Dating Denji arc
When Denji and Asa Mitaka are trapped in the Tanashi Aquarium by Fami, Denji reveals that, despite her young age, Nayuta is smart enough to go to college, and he is paying her tuition.

A day after Denji and Asa escape from the aquarium, Nayuta goes out for a walk with the dogs. When she returns home, she finds Denji and Yoru kissing. She calls Yoru a thief and points at her, linking a chain through Yoru's skull. With the chain, Nayuta has Yoru barking like a dog, to her amusement. Denji tells Nayuta to turn her back immediately, which she agrees to do as soon as she is fed. While she eats, she asks Denji if he is sure he wants to turn "Asa" back, adding that every woman he meets tries to kill him.

Denji replies that it is just a feeling, and she complies, but on two conditions: allow her to eat ice cream every day and not make friends with Asa anymore. When asked why, Nayuta explains that "Asa" has a bad scent and proceeds to say she will alter her memories to make her believe that Denji stood her up. Denji is conflicted but decides to put Nayuta first, and she replies with a peace sign.

Falling Devil arc
At night, Nayuta smells a "nasty devil scent" and insists that Denji go out and hunt it. However, Denji is depressed and does not want to be Chainsaw Man anymore, saying that Nayuta will only block him from more future ladies. Nayuta tells Denji that if he turns into Chainsaw Man, he could get more love from people than a girlfriend ever would. After some thought, Denji is quickly regains motivation.

During the fight Denji and Asa are eaten by another devil which Nayuta manipulates into throwing them up. This enrages the Falling Devil which annihilates the devil in response. She then has a chat with Fami, who proceeds tells Nayuta about the prophecy and offers Nayuta to work together to stop it. Although they both have the shared interest of loving pizza Nayuta declines due to having to study.

Powers and Techniques

Abilities naturally granted from Devil Physiology include: Reincarnation (Reincarnation Cycle, Irregular Cycle; Devils do not die in the truest sense, even if they die and turn to ash, as long as people fear their name, they'll come back to life in another form, though they do not revive in the human world but rather come back in hell, being under an endless cycle of death and rebirth, if they die in hell they come to the human world[58]), Abstract Existence (Physical, Relational Abstraction; Devils are all born with a name and their connection of fear to that name can make them more powerful or weaker depending on how much people fear it, they can also use powers tied to the name[59]), Social Influencing (Devils are capable of convicing people to form contracts with them with promises of power[60]), Enhanced Senses (Devils are noted to have keener noses then humans, being able to tell from scent whose a devil and whose not[61]), Healing (If a devil drinks blood[62], their wounds heal[63]), Regeneration (High-Mid; Devils have shown to be capable of reconnecting multiple limbs cut up across an entire body and reconnect them back together[64]. They have also shown to regenerate from being cut right down the middle[65]), Possession (Devils are able to possess dead bodies[66], being known as "devil possession"[67]), Statistics Amplification (All Devils are born with a name and the more that name is feared the more powerful the devil is itself[68]), Blood Manipulation (Devils can forcibly suck the blood from other devils and humans[69]), Power Bestowal (Pieces of a devil's flesh being eaten can enhance one's power regardless of what type of devils they are[70]), Limited Law Manipulation (Devils can form contract with humans, a word with a lot of power that most parties much honor, if they do not then they will die[71]).

Resistance to Transmutation (Devils are immune to Doll Devil's ability to turn one into a doll through touching them[72]), Battlefield Removal (Application Based), Mind Manipulation & Information Manipulation (Total; Against devils, Cosmo Fiend needs to use an "all-out halloween"[73], where she[74] can just[75] casually say halloween to a target to affect them otherwise[76], with Cosmo Fiend's ability giving someone total understanding of everything in the universe by having all the contents of all of the books in the library flow right into the persons mind and once they understanding everything they can only think of halloween until they die[77]), Corruption (Devils are able to unaffected by being bitten by zombies[78], which being bitten by a zombie will turn others into zombies[79]), Law Manipulation (While devils are required to abide by the rules of a contract[80], they can loophole and refuse to let its partner use them[81])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Enhanced Senses (Makima is able to tell if one is a devil or human through smells, with hybrids having a peculiar smell to her of them being neither human or devil[82], she notes to Denji that she can pick up both his and Pochita's scent on his body[83]. Makima is noted to always be listening in, with Kishibe needing to write down on a piece of paper to circumvent this[84]. Makima is able to communicate with and see what's happening with her proxies[85] even if they're in hell[86]. Noted that Makima borrows the hearing of lower lifeforms to listen into conversations such as birds and rats[87]. As Makima views all devils and humans as lesser then herself, with only Chainsaw Man being the exception because she's a fan of his[110]. All of those that fall under her control will fall for her regardless of sex and gender[111]. Even when Makima is dead and control is weakened due to Chainsaw Man eating Makima, her targets are still affected under her control and others cannot break them out of it with their own control ability[112]), Memory Manipulation (Those under her control lose memories of what they've done[113][114]), Chain Manipulation (All Devils and humans under Makima's control are shown with a chain around them connected to her[115]), Animal Manipulation (Makima can use rats as her eyes and allow her to appear somewhere[116]), Death Manipulation (Physical) & Fate Manipulation (Makima through using human sacrifices can force one to say the name of an attacker allowing her to crush the person and in the process kill the person that said the attacks name[117][118]), Portal Manipulation & Summoning (Can use her brain portal to summon enemies from hell, can summon the devils she has control over[119]), Damage Manipulation (Through a mere stare caused massive damage to a yakuza member's insides[120]. This works even on inorganic beings such as Darkness Devil[121]), Distance Negation (Makima can kill someone without needing to attack, regardless of the distance they are away from her[122]. Makima can also point her finger as a gun and say "bang" doing a gun-like attack without any actual shot coming out[123]).

Resistance to Battlefield Removal (Application Based), Mind Manipulation, & Information Manipulation (Total; Makima is unaffected by Cosmo Fiend saying halloween to her[124], where she[125] can just[126] casually say halloween to a target to affect them otherwise[127], with Cosmo Fiend's ability giving someone total understanding of everything in the universe by having all the contents of all of the books in the library flow right into the persons mind and once they understanding everything they can only think of halloween until they die[128]), Memory Manipulation (Makima is able to remember most of whatever the Chainsaw Man has eaten, which the devils that Chainsaw Man eats have their names erased from existence, erasing the names from the past, the present, and even from individuals' memories, with Makima planning to use Chainsaw Man's power to get rid of death, war, hunger, and many of the negative things humanity would be happier without[129]), Law Negation (Even after Chainsaw Devil killed Makima a total of 26 times, he still could not break her contract, in which Chainsaw Devil can completely negate contracts, with Kishibe having his men form a contract with the Hell Devil in order to send Makima into hell yet Chainsaw Devil saved her and was sent to hell instead[130][131], with contracts being a word with a lot of power that most parties much honor, if they do not then they will die[132]), Consumption (Conceptual Consumption), Conceptual Manipulation, Erasure (Space-Time Erasure & Conceptual Erasure), & Mind Manipulation (Memory Manipulation; To even conceptually erase Makima requires Denji to not consider what he's doing an attack but a form of love[133][134], where the devils that Chainsaw Man eats have their names erased from existence, erasing the names from the past, the present, and even from individuals' memories, with Makima planning to use Chainsaw Man's power to get rid of death, war, hunger, and many of the negative things humanity would be happier without[135]), Regeneration Negation (Denji combined his chainsaw with Power's blood in order to slow down Makima's regneration[136], though Power alone trying to attack Makima did not slow down her regeneration nearly to the scale as Denji's[137][138])

Has control of any person she comes across[139], with any devil and human she views as lesser then herself, giving complete control over them[140], along with those that have even died[141]: Natural Weaponry, Weapon Mastery & Weapon Control (Several of her devils can transform their bodies into weapons and use them skillfully along with control them[142]), Spatial Manipulation (With Eternity Devil, has the ability to manipulate space, as shown when they kept Denji and co. stuck on the eight floor no matter if they went up or downstairs[143]), Time Manipulation (Time Stop; With Eternity Devil, caused time to stop on the eighth floor with its power[144]), Intangibility (Phasing; With the Shark Fiend, he is able to swim in any surface, wall or ground[145]), Body Control (With Princi, she can control her body and her feet to contort and easily stab through people[146]. Makima has shown direct control with her[147]), Dimensional Travel & Summoning (With Princi, can have her summon her directly into areas through her zippers[148]), Life Manipulation (Passive; With the Angel Devil, siphons the life span of anyone that touches them through direct contact[149]. Angel Devil can also summon a life span sword that removes one's life span with a mere swipe[150]. Makima has shown direct control with him[151]), Explosion Manipulation & Self-Destruction (With Bomb Devil, can cause explosions through being based off the name bomb[152], with every punch they throw being an explosion[153], along with being able to detatch her body and throw her head as an explosion[154]. Makima has shown direct control over Reze[155]), Transmutation & Non-Standard Interaction (With the Angel Devil, those siphoned have their life spans turned into weapons[156], it is noted that the weapons can cut through ghosts that should be untouchable[157]), Precognition (Analytical Prediciton; With the Future Devil, able to see a sliver into the fuutre to be able to predict and stop one's attacks[158], in which Makima has control over the Future Devil[159]), Information Analysis (With Pingtsi, can turn her ponytail into a magnifying glass that detects information such as what devils a person has contracted[160]. Makima has shown direct control over Quanxi, meaning she has control over her fiends[161]), Omniscience (As Makima possesses Cosmo Fiend, who possesses total understanding of everything in the universe by having all the contents of all of the books in the library flow right into the persons mind and once they understanding everything they can only think of Halloween until they die[162]), Battlefield Removal (Application Based), Mind Manipulation, & Information Manipulation (Total; With Cosmo Fiend, where she[163] can just[164] casually say halloween to a target to affect them otherwise[165], with Cosmo Fiend's ability giving someone total understanding of everything in the universe by having all the contents of all of the books in the library flow right into the persons mind and once they understanding everything they can only think of halloween until they die[166], for those that resist, Cosmo Fiend needs to use an "all-out halloween"[167]. Makima has shown direct control over Quanxi, meaning she has control over her fiends[168]), Consumption (Physical) & Absorption (With the Snake Devil, able to devour entire devils and humans whole to the point that there's nothing left of their body[169], along with this she can spit out previously devouered devils to use as her allies such as the Ghost Devil[170]. Makima has shown direct control of Snake Devil[171]), Invisibility & Intangibility (Phasing; With Ghost Devil, an invisible and powerful devil[172], who is noted to be untouchable[173]. With Princi, can phase through the ground[174]), Enhanced Senses (The Ghost Devil senses beings and sees through fear[175]), Corruption (With Zombie Devil[176], can turn many into zombies[177]), Makima has dozens of other fiends, devils, and devil contract humans under her control[178].

Resistance to Conceptual Manipulation, Erasure (Space-Time Erasure & Conceptual Erasure), & Mind Manipulation (Memory Manipulation; Those under control by Makima that have had their name eaten and erased by Chainsaw Devil do not have their existence erased[179])

All previous powers and abilities to a weaker extent as Denji devoured Makima weakening her, similar to what he did to[180] War Devil, Enhanced Senses (Nayuta is able to tell from scents how trustworthy someone is[181], and be able to smell devils scents[182]), Domination & Chain Manipulation (Nayuta is able to project an invisible chain that goes through someone and controls them, making them do things like become a dog[183][184]. Controlled a devil's brain a small bit to make it barf Denji and Asa out of its mouth[185]), Memory Manipulation (Nayuta is able to alter one's memories while under her control[186])

Equipment

  • Controlled Targets: Makima has many under her control due to viewing many as inferior to her, giving her both humans and devil contracts as helpers.
    • Yutaro Kurose & Michiko Tendo's Devil Contract
      • Punishment Contract Kurose: Yutaro and Michiko had a contract with the Punishment Devil for an unknown price.
    • Akane Sawatari's Devil Contract
      • Snake Devil: Akane has a contract with the Snake Devil that allows her to summon it at will through the following commands:
        • "Swallow it whole" ( (まる) () Marunomi?): Akane fully summons the Snake Devil to absorb the target as seen when she used this ability to devour the Ghost Devil completely besides its head.
        • "Spit it out" ( () () Hakidashi?): After being absorbed into the Snake Devil, the target being is restored and can be used to fight alongside Akane after speaking the command followed by the absorbed being's name[187]. She used this against Aki Hayakawa to summon the Ghost Devil. However, releasing absorbed being caused her nose to bleed which indicates an internal damage due to sacrifice.
        • "Tail" ( (しっ) () Shippo?): Akane is also able to summon the tail of the Snake Devil when she used this ability against Kobeni Higashiyama who dodged easily.
    • Aki Hayakawa's Devil Contract
      • Future Devil: After losing favor with the Fox Devil, Aki was taken to the Future Devil that is held prisoner by Public Safety and he managed to gain a contract to use its abilities in exchange for letting the Future Devil live inside his right eye.
        • Precognition: Aki had the ability to see a few seconds into the future. He used this to predict his opponent's oncoming attacks and plan accordingly[188].
        • Summoning: Due to his contract, Aki could summon Future Devil by calling him. While the Devil says that Aki must say "The Future Rules" to make him come, this was not an actual requirement.
    • Angel Devil: Angel is the Angel Devil, a devil who embodies the fear of angels, and a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo Special Division 4.
      • Angelic Wings: The Angel Devil has the ability to extend angel like wings from its back. These wings are tough enough to deflect gunfire and can be used as impromptu shields, however bullets are still powerful enough to cause him pain[189]. It is unknown if he can fly, similar to the Bat Devil.
"Usage: 1,000 Years" is used by Makima against the Chainsaw Man.
      • Life-Span Absorption: The Angel Devil can absorb the life spans of humans through physical contact[190]. This will eventually kill the affected one painlessly if they touch long enough[191]. After Aki briefly grabbed his hand, the Angel Devil estimated that Aki had lost two months of his life span[192].
      • Life-Span Weapons: The Angel Devil can transform the siphoned life spans into weapons that have supernatural properties through his halo such as Aki's katana which can cut through the normally intangible Ghost Devil[193]. Due to his nightmares about the people whose life spans he has siphoned, he is hesitant to use this ability frequently.
        • 'Usage: Five Years' ( () (ねん) 使 () (よう) Gonen Shiyō?): By using up five years worth of collected life span, the Angel Devil can manifest a sword from his halo which can seemingly instantly kill anyone that he cuts with it without leaving a mark[194].
        • 'Usage: Ten Years' (10 (ねん) 使 () (よう) Jūnen Shiyō?): By using up ten years worth of collected life span, the Angel Devil can manifest a sword from his halo. Its effect and strength remain unknown because it was used against Makima and she quickly knocked him down before he attacks[195].
        • 'Usage: 100 Years' (100 (ねん) 使 () (よう) Hyakunen Shiyō?): By using up a hundred years worth of collected life span, the Angel Devil can manifest a sword from his halo. This ability is used by Makima against Power while she is controlling the Angel Devil.
        • 'Usage: 1,000 Years' ( (せん) (ねん) 使 () (よう) Sennen Shiyō?): By using up thousand years worth of collected life span, the Angel Devil can manifest a spear from his halo. This ability is used by Makima against the Chainsaw Man while she is controlling the Angel Devil. Makima threw this spear by summoning three humanoid entities. This technique is strong enough to defeat the Chainsaw Devil.
    • Spider Devil: Princi was the Spider Devil, a devil who embodies the fear of spiders, and is a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo Special Division 4.
      • Intangibility: Princi has been shown to submerge herself under the ground and emerge again to attack her foes at any given time[196].
      • Summoning: Princi has shown that she can unfurl the zipper on her body to summon Makima to her immediate location even in Hell[197]. It is not known if she can summon anybody or only Makima as it is shown that she and Makima can communicate directly even though the former is in Hell.
    • Flame Devil: Barem is a human-devil Hybrid that merged with the Flamethrower Devil and serves as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc, where he faces the Chainsaw Devil.
      • Flamethrowers: Barem can generate powerful blasts of fire from his flamethrowers; they are strong enough to cause explosions that reach an entire floor of a building and set an entire horde of zombies on fire.
    • Zombie Devil: The Zombie Devil is a devil who embodies the fear of zombies. He is the secondary antagonist of the Introduction arc, who turned various Yakuza into zombies and attempted to kill Denji.
      • Zombie Creation: The Zombie Devil has the power to turn humans into zombies, who are forced to act as his loyal servants[198]. Humans who are bitten by zombies are transformed into zombies themselves[199]. Zombies are able to move and attack even if they are heavily injured, making them tougher than normal humans. During the final fight against the Control Devil, it is shown this power can revive corpses.
    • Bomb Devil:
      • Explosion Creation: After pulling the pin on her neck, Reze gains the ability to create explosions. The explosions are powerful enough to destroy vehicles, buildings and asphalt roads. Her explosions are also effective against other Devils, being capable of harming the Shark Fiend and Denji in his hybrid form. Besides that, Reze does not take any damage from her explosions, unless she desires, allowing her to use her powers without worrying about harming herself.
        • Explosive Propulsion: By releasing explosions from her arms and legs, Reze can enhance her physical attacks and mobility with the explosive force from the blasts[200]. She can also travel through the air by causing continuous and consecutive explosions, being capable of keeping up with cars[201].
          • Augmented Strength: By infusing her attacks with explosive force, Reze's punches and kicks become more devastating. Her explosive unnamed attacks have also been shown to be powerful enough to destroy trucks and send Denji flying several feet into the air[202].
          • Augmented Speed: Reze is able to use the explosive force created from her blasts to increase her movement speed. By releasing a massive explosion, Reze was able to send herself flying several feet into the air. She was also able to use her explosions to reach Aki's car in a short period of time[203][204].
        • Explosive Spark: By flicking her hands, Reze can release a spark which explodes upon impact. This attack serves as a long range projectile and is powerful enough to kill ordinary humans[205][206].
      • Self-Detonation: Besides her ability to release explosions from her body, Reze also has the power to turn parts of her body into bombs. Unlike her normal explosions, which are more instantaneous, the explosive flesh behaves more like a remote bomb. The body parts that Reze losses by using them as explosives do not appear to cause her damage, since she is able to regrow them without needing to drink blood.
        • Torpedo Transformation: Reze can transform her limbs into torpedoes, which makes her punches and kicks more devastating[207]. Reze does not appear to suffer any damage from the detonation of her torpedo-like limbs.
    • Gun Devil:
      • Bullet Flesh: Due to the speed and power of the Gun Devil, whenever it moves, pieces of its own flesh (which resemble bullets) scorch off of its body and land in random areas it comes across. When devils of any type consume pieces of the Gun Devil's flesh, their power is greatly enhanced. As stated by Makima, his body is currently separated into several pieces and remains in an unconscious state. Twenty percent of his body is possessed by America, twenty-eight by the Soviet Union, eleven by China, four by other countries, and the remaining thirty-seven is held by devils around the world as flesh pieces.
        • Passive Regeneration: The Gun Devil has the ability to passively regenerate itself, as small pieces of flesh from the Gun Devil are attracted to each other and will fuse together upon contact. And large enough chunks will constantly attempt to rejoin the Gun Devil's main body to regenerate[208].
      • Bullet Projection: The Gun Devil is able to fire bullets using the several guns which are parts of its body with great precision and speed. It is able to fire a bullet through the head of every adult male within approximately 1 kilometer of it, fire a bullet through the head of every child up to 12 years old within approximately 1500 meters[209] and fire a bullet through the heart of every living thing born in January, February, March, May, June, August, September, November or December in approximately 1000 meters of himself. As a Fiend, its power is significantly weaker, however, it can still fire bullets from the gun in its left forearm and head with great precision and speed. It is able to break walls and Denji apart with ease as well as destroy multiple buildings at once[210][211].

Notable Techniques

  • Fear Empowerment: All Devils are born with a "name" that ties them to a concept. Devils feed on the fear that humans and other creatures have towards that concept, gaining their strength from it. Because of this, a Devil's power is deeply related to how humans perceive the concept and the visual images that their "name" inspire. The more fear is associated with a "name", the more powerful the Devil who possesses it becomes[212]. An example offered by Makima is how a Car Devil would be stronger than a Coffee Devil, since cars conjures up the mental image of getting run over and dying, while coffee does not evoke any scary ideas; another example is the Chicken Devil, which is so weak that it was kept as a class pet for a high school and killed when a student fell onto it. The fear that humans have towards Devils in general is also a source of power that they can utilize, since it was stated that after the Gun Devil attack, Devils grew stronger due to people being more afraid of them. Devils can also feed on the fear that other Devils have towards them, with the Chainsaw Devil managing to become extremely strong by using Devils fear as his source of power.
  • Blood Consumption: All Devils can consume blood of other creatures to heal their injuries, it is also implied that Devils can grow more powerful by consuming blood. While all Devils can consume blood to quickly regenerate, powerful Devils have shown to possess better regeneration[213][214]. Hybrids and other powerful Devils, such as the Gun Devil and Darkness Devil, have really potent healing factors. The flesh or blood of a Devil can be feed to other creatures, making them stronger and even giving them the ability of the Devil they’ve eaten, however this only works if the flesh/blood they ate came from a Devil that is still alive as Denji did not get more powerful or gained the Control Devil’s ability, despite consuming Makima’s entire body.
  • Contract Creation: All Devils can make contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow some of their power in exchange for a sacrifice[215]. However, Fiends are unable to perform contracts and Devils are unable to perform contracts between each other.
  • Corpse Possession: All Devils can also possess human corpses. This in most cases ends up creating a Fiend, though in rare cases it can end up creating a Hybrid instead under certain circumstances. The personality of the Fiend may mirror that of the corpse if the brain is still intact, as evident by the Violence Fiend's polite and gentle attitude[216]. In these scenarios, the Devil may also retain some memories from the body they took over. In rare instances, Devils deliberately would like to retain the personality of the possessed corpse, effectively reviving them, and take over their personalities from time to time. The only known instance of this happening is with the War Devil, who took over Asa Mitaka's body while keeping her ego intact.
  • Reincarnation: Another ability common among all Devils is reincarnation: when a Devil dies, they reincarnate in Hell; when they die in Hell, they reincarnate on Earth. This ability makes them practically immortal. However every time they reincarnate, their memories and personalities are reset, making them completely different individuals from their previous incarnation. However, if the concept to which the Devil belongs is forgotten by humanity, he is unable to reincarnate and ceases to exist.
  • Flesh Power Boost: It is said that a Devil or human of any power can have their abilities boosted if they eat the flesh of a super powerful Devil no matter what their original power level was. The current only known examples are the numerous Devils who became more powerful by eating the Gun Devil’s flesh and Santa Claus becoming a very powerful abomination after consuming the flesh of the Darkness Devil.
  • Superhuman Strength: Makima possesses a great deal of physical strength allowing her to fight effectively in hand-to-hand combat without relying on any of her subordinates. Her strength was great enough to overwhelm Pochita's weakened form and shatter his chainsaws with her strikes.
  • Enhanced Smell: According to Denji, Makima primarily differentiates others through smell. In their first encounter, she was able to detect that Pochita still existed within Denji through his scent. However, she cannot differentiate between humans through sight, similar to how we cannot differentiate between dogs by their faces.
  • 'Domination: As Makima embodies the fear of control or conquest/domination, her abilities reflects this nature. Besides her manipulative way of thinking and acting, she is able to control any being who she believes is inferior to her, even being able to force them into making contracts with her or another Devil. If Makima is not fully convinced that she is superior to somebody, such as Reze, she can best them in a fight to prove their inferiority to herself. It seems as though once placed under her control, the victim subsequently loses their memory of anything that happened immediately before they were controlled and anything they did while being controlled. This ability works on any being, regardless of the number of humans, animals, Devils, Fiends and Hybrids she controls. She can channel the power of her victims by summoning them through a chain connected to her body. It has been shown that she can use the abilities of Angel Devil, Future Devil, Snake Devil, Punishment Devil, Spider Devil and Zombie Devil. Even deceased individuals can be controlled in this manner. Makima was able to form a squad of weapon Hybrids, three of which (Reze, Quanxi and Katana Man) were former enemies who now behaved affectionately towards her. This suggests Makima can control individuals outright as well as changing their personalities in subtle ways. Makima's control can be broken as seen with Angel Devil. She borrows the hearing of rats, birds and other small animals she controls to hear conversations remotely, seemingly anywhere on the planet and possibly extending into Hell itself[217][218]. She was able to spy on Denji's and Reze's conversation and was listening in on Kishibe's conversation with Quanxi[219]. This ability can be circumvented by communicating nonverbally such as writing on a piece of paper. She has been shown to control a large number of rats which allow her to travel around using them. These rats can then cluster together to form the shape of a human and thus allow for Makima to be transported to that location instantly[220]. Makima is also able to summoned through Princi's zipper, which can move her from Earth to hell or wherever the Spider Devil happens to be. She has demonstrated the ability to make others hear her voice by placing her hand on their head even if the person is dead[221]. She uses this to command the Devils that the person is currently contracted with.
  • Force Manipulation: Makima has been shown to offensively manipulate an invisible force in a variety of way similar to Darkness Devil. This force can be used to damage her weak targets internally by simply staring at them. Depending on the situation, she can use this power in other various way such as:
    • She has shown to cause her target to be crushed by an invisible force from over long distances. In order to use this technique, Makima appears to require a higher place such as a shrine, the name of a target and a human sacrifice. Makima forms a symbol with her hands and instructs the sacrifice whose eyes closed by a white cloth to utter the name of the target. The sacrifice then dies and target subsequently is crushed, preceded by a brief sense of "wrongness". This attack completely destroys the target's body but causes no damage to adjacent people or objects, even the target's clothes. While she is using this ability, the sacrificial people around herself are blindfolded with a cloth. She used this ability once from Kyoto to kill the goons of Sawatari's gang.
    • She has been shown to inflict damage by projecting an invisible force to targets she points at with her index finger[222] which is strong enough to heavily damage Darkness Devil, who is a Primal Devil, kill Power instantly[223] and send an empowered Chainsaw Man high into the atmosphere when she used it repetitively against him. She usually says "Bang! (バン!)" while using this ability.
    • She has been shown to remove the heads of her targets in the vicinity from a short-to-mid range by using a sword; similar to her ability to crush her targets remotely, the people around her close their eyes with a black cloth.
  • High Alcohol Tolerance: Makima has an exceedingly high tolerance for drinking alcohol; able to out-drink both Aki Hayakawa and Himeno without showing any signs of being debilitated by the vast quantities of liquor/ethanol[224]. However, due to her contract with the Japanese Prime Minister, it is likely that any damage her excessive drinking would have caused was redirected to a random Japanese citizen.

Other

Standard Tactics: Makima will either control the opponent instantly that she faces or if she doesn't view them as inferior to her, she will summon various of her controlled targets to attack along with her.

Weaknesses

Trivia

  • Makima's name is written in katakana (マキマ), though it seems to have no special meaning to it. However, the "maki" (マキ) in her name seems to be from "Makita", which is the name of a Japanese manufacturer of power tools that also creates chainsaws (noting her idolization of Chainsaw Man).
  • Makima's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows:
    • Makima ranked 2nd in the First Popularity Poll with 27,224 votes.
    • Makima ranked 2nd in the Second Popularity Poll with 76,733 votes.
  • Makima smokes "hi-fight"s, likely a reference to the Japanese tobacco brand "hi-lite."
  • Makima was the first character Fujimoto had a solid image of as she is a character in "Breath of The Stars", one of the serialized works in Fujimoto's head, out of many fantasy stories he imagined in Junior High.
  • Makima was partially based on "Benten", a character in "The Eccentric Family" that Fujimoto liked, for she is an unfathomable higher being, with her own sadness that we lowly humans can't comprehend—something Fujimoto wanted to convey in Makima.
  • Fujimoto has mentioned FLCL as a source of inspiration for the girls of Chainsaw Man, and Makima is likely based on Haruko from FLCL who is a manipulative, unpredictable being.
  • According to Fujimoto, if you remove the "ki" from Makima's name, you're left with "Mama", which ties in with Denji, who has always been pursuing maternal things since the death of his mother at a young age.
    • The most common spelling of Makima in Japanese is 牧間, which can be read, as a play on 人間/"human", as "shepherd". Which can go with how she essentially can make people into her "sheeple."
    • The two kana that form her name are homophones for "ma (魔)" and "ki (鬼)", both different words for "demon".
  • Makima's Japanese Devil Name, Shihai (支配), uses the same kanji as the Japanese translation for the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in Christian mythology. Given Makima's status as a member of the group, her name could also be interpreted as the Conquest Devil.
    • In Japanese the word Shihai is an umbrella term for several similar concepts relating to control, conquest, rulership and domination .etc. So while in Japanese it was already clear what type of Devil she was as well as being a horseman upon the first time her Devil type was revealed, the umbrella term would be lost in translation and thus different languages would come up with different variations such as Control Devil and Domination Devil being the most notable examples.
  • Makima's final battle at the end with Chainsaw Man was inspired by the Shinobu vs. Koyomi fight in the Kizumonogatari III movie according to a tweet by Fujimoto.
  • In Makima's apartment (shown in Chapter 81), there is a painting showing "The Fall of Lucifer", similar to Gustave Doré's illustration for John Milton's poem Paradise Lost.
  • In both the anime and the manga, Makima is often seen with pests and parasites.
    • In the opening theme "Kick Back", Makima is allegorically represented by two animals: the jade wasp (Ampulex compressa) and Leucochloridium paradoxum, both parasites that control the actions of their host.
    • Her association with pests could be reflective of how the Conquest Horseman is often interpreted as the Horseman of Pestilence. The reason for the Conquest Horseman being changed to Pestilence in some interpretations is because scholars found Conquest to be too similar to War. Pestilence was an easy change because at the time, bows and arrows were laced with poisons and toxins and the Conquest Horseman held a bow and arrow. Even though Makima's hands are in a more gun-like position, her "Bang!" ability can also be comparable to shots from an arrow.
  • Makima's gut halo is often seen as being symbolic of the crown that the Conquest Horseman would wear.
