Background

Shohei Yakumo is a character in Shin Megami Tensei V. A mysterious tall man standing by Nuwa's side. He dons an old-fashioned police uniform with the Kanagawa Prefecture arm badge and wields a katana and a revolver. He hails from a long lineage of law officers and spiritualists, with him following the family tradition.

Shohei's father, a kind man but hard on himself, had his weakness exploited by a demon, causing his death. As such, he displays resentment towards demons, finding them to be parasites that do not belong in the human world. He sides with Nuwa, a demon who's been with him since he was very young. Nuwa claims she and Yakumo were inseparable. While the two appear to be cordial with each other, they are implied (and eventually confirmed) to be in love with each other.

Due to his resentment of demons, he and Nuwa initially wished to make a world in which no gods or demons would exist. However, as Nuwa is a demon and the two reciprocate their feelings for each other, they realized that this option was unfeasible. His views on humanity are rather stern as well, finding that, in his words, people who don't have the will to fight are better off dead anyway, and that those that would betray their fellow man should've never been born to begin with.

His sternness often drew misunderstanding from other people, with his ideals even being challenged by Aogami, who finds him to be cold and even questions if he genuinely cares about humanity, but even if his ideals are condemned by the world, Yakumo actually holds on to a noble objective of his own: he actually believes in humanity's potential, and simply hates humans who have given up: he and Nuwa reject godhood as a whole, wanting to destroy the throne and leave humaniity to decide their fate for themselves. The unfolding events of the ending give a glimpse of the morals he wishes to uphold: in spite of tragedy, he puts tradition and has faith in what humanity has done in the past and what they can do together in the future: creation via godhood would be dishonorable to that purpose.

Yakumo first meets the protagonist in Da'at, while in the midst of his battle with Nuwa. At first, Yakumo finds him to be no different from other demons, but Nuwa asks him to let him go on a whim. Yakumo laters confront the protagonist again in Chiyoda, questioning Nuwa's decision to spare him. Although he's convinced he's nothing special, he decides to give him a chance and battle him instead of shooting him down outright. After being defeated, he'll question him for cooperating with Bethel and the demons, especially after Lahmu's casualties, as well as manipulating one into doing his bidding to become a Nahobino.

If the protagonist chooses to save Tokyo or uphold God's will, Yakumo and Nuwa will intercept him at the throne in a last-ditch attempt to prevent them from claiming it, transforming into a massive, human-faced dragon. They are ultimately slain in the ensuing battle.

If the protagonist chooses to destroy the throne, Yakumo and Nuwa will not talk with the protagonist unlike the other Nahobino pairs, instead making their way straight to the throne. However, they are intercepted by Abdiel and Ichiro Dazai, who transform into their Nahobino form and easily overwhelm the pair. Yakumo takes the brunt of the attack, sparing Nuwa from death at the cost of his own life. The protagonist arrives soon after and he expresses shame in failing his goal, saying it was his destiny to lose, but content that he died on his own terms. His death leaves Nuwa heartbroken, who simply disappears; if certain criteria is met, she reappears after they kill Nahobino Abdiel, telling them of another option that she no longer has reservations with following his death.

• Gun: A gun he uses in combat, easily able to kill low tier demons with his bullets, likely due to observation.

• Nuwa: Nuwa is a frivolous mother goddess appearing by Shohei Yakumo's side. She worked alongside him since he was young to fulfill his worldview of a world devoid of demonic influences. The two share their Knowledge, making them qualify to fuse as Nahobino. She even says Yakumo is her "other half" and that they're inseparable. Amanozako theorizes that Nuwa is actually in love with Yakumo, but can never pinpoint whether it's because she loves him specifically, or if she loves all of humanity and he's just a symbol of it, as the subject of love is complicated. But it's ultimately confirmed that Shohei's feelings for her are returned.

Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured. Shin Megami Tensei IV Sick Reduces affected character's outgoing damage by 25%, its evasion to 0 and increases damage taken by 25%. At the end of the party's turn or an individual party member's turn, if a party member is afflicted, there is a 5% chance that another party member will be infected. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Lost Nanashi cannot summon or fuse the affected demon and is forced to reunite with said demon through an encounter. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Brand Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured, but wears off randomly or automatically after battle. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Close Prevents a unit from using their magic. Represented by kissing and hearts when inflicted by skills. Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis Mirror Affected character cannot move, takes increased damage from physical attacks but reflects all magic. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Card Affected character cannot move, takes increased damage from Fire attacks, and decreased damage from physical attacks. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Bat Affected character steals HP from allies outside of battle. Can spread to allies. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Plague Stronger version of Poison that deals more damage. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Dance Affected character cannot move. Evasion is increased. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Tipsy Affected character may take a random action Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Drunk Affected character performs random actions Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku High Provides bonuses to all actions, but they also become random. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Guilt Randomly-selected actions cannot be performed. Megami Ibunroku Persona Blind Hit rate and evasion dropped. Megami Ibunroku Persona Sick Loses HP at the end of the turn and when walking around. Works like Poison, but Sick is considered a different ailment in-game. Puppet can attack and use items, but cannot summon Persona. Megami Ibunroku Persona Beast Buffs all stats. Amount varies depending on the current moon phase. Megami Ibunroku Persona Illusion When a character is in the illusion status effect, his/her hit rate will decrease significantly. Persona 2 Possession Possession occurs when the demon inhibits the characters body. When a possessed character summons a persona, there's a high chance that the possessed character will attack instead. Persona 2 Despair Drains SP every turn, cannot move. Dies/Faints after 3 turns have passed. Persona 5 / Royal Rattled Cannot move, damage taken increased. Persona 5 / Royal Artist's Grace Inflict weaknesses to all affinities. Persona 5 / Royal Lust Affected targets may lose a turn. Persona 5 / Royal Wrath Affected targets have their attack raised sharply, but their defense decreased sharply for a turn. Allows free action. Persona 5 / Royal Envy Affected Targets may attack random party members with weapons when a support skill is used on anyone but the envied target for a turn. Persona 5 / Royal Ache After a successful hunt, the character that just ate might get affected by a stomach ache. Occasionally inflicted as a side effect from eating a Moldy Roll. This prevents the character from gaining any AP after the battle. Allies also won't get any AP from the consumed monster, if AP sharing skills are set. Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner Bat Reduces all stats and makes the affected character weak to Force. Wears off over time or when battle ends. Does not override passive skills that affect Force resistance.
