I-I promised Gohan... I-I can't lose... I'm... Son Goku!
~ Goku refusing to give in to Turles
Gohan! I don't know about the earth, but I'll protect you, at least! And I am definitely going to defeat that guy!
Wow, my gosh! What a change! This has never happened before...huh, wait, it's the legend! Goku must have transformed into a Super Saiyan!
~ King Kai when he sees Goku turn into the Psuedo Super Saiyan

Background

Son Goku, born Kakarot, is a Saiyan raised on Earth and the overall main protagonist of the Dragon Ball series. Originally was sent to Earth as an infant, Kakarot would be adopted by Grandpa Gohan who named him Son Goku. A head injury at an early age alters Goku's memory, ridding him of his initial destructive nature and allowing him to grow up to become one of Earth's greatest defenders. He constantly strives and trains to be the greatest warrior possible, which has kept the Earth and the universe safe from destruction many times.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Son Goku’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Bardock - The Father of Goku
Kakarot was born sometime in Age 737 on Planet Vegeta, during a time of great turmoil. Following a Saiyan custom, Kakarot was sent as a baby to planet Earth, in order to destroy its inhabitants and clear the planet for its future sale. As Earth's inhabitants were thought to be weak, a baby Saiyan was considered enough for the task, especially after transforming into a Great Ape by Earth's full moon. Kakarot's father, a low-class Saiyan warrior named Bardock, disappeared in his home planet's destruction at the hands of Frieza shortly after Goku's departure to Earth.

Dead Zone Four years after the defeat of Piccolo Jr. in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Garlic Jr.'s henchmen show up at Goku's House in in order to get the Four-Star Dragon Ball that Gohan wears on his hat, subsequently injuring Chi-Chi and Ox-King as well as kidnapping Gohan. Goku visits Bulma at Kame House so that he can use the Dragon Radar to track down Gohan's location and heads off towards Garlic Castle in the red sea.

Soon after arriving, Kami appears and while he fights Garlic Jr., who has recently used Shenron to ask for immortality, Goku heads into the castle where he confronts the three henchmen. When Piccolo appears in order to get his own revenge against Garlic Jr and his minions, Goku takes his battle with Nicky and Ginger outside where he promptly kills the two after firing a Kamehameha at them.

Goku and Piccolo team up to battle Super Garlic Jr and after removing their weighted clothing, they are able to stop him. Thinking Garlic defeated, they start to fight with each other due to Piccolo wanting to settle the score. In the middle of their duel, Garlic Jr. comes back and opens a portal to the Dead Zone, trying to suck everybody in. Gohan gets angry at seeing Goku in danger, and, unconsciously releasing his power, he pushes Garlic Jr. into the Dead Zone, sealing him inside. Surprised to see Gohan's power and then later that he didn't even realise that he had done so, Gohan decides not to tell Chi-Chi about what happened.

The World's Strongest
After Master Roshi and Bulma are kidnapped by Dr. Kochin and the Bio-Men, Oolong visits Goku at his home and tells him what happened. Goku goes to Dr. Wheelo's Fortress using the Flying Nimbus to save them. Goku overcomes several of the fortress defenses and battles against Misokatsun though his rubbery body gives him trouble. Goku charges straight at his stomach and uses the Kaio-ken in order to fly through him. After defeating Misokatsun, Goku next encounters Ebifurya and Kishime and ends up encased in ice. He is saved from a finishing blow due to the arrival of Gohan and Krillin but after they end up in trouble, Goku frees himself from the ice using the Kaio-ken and swiftly defeats the two Bio-Warriors.

Heading further into the fortress where they find Bulma, Goku is approached by a a brainwashed Piccolo, the two battle until the device shatters and Piccolo gains control of himself. When Dr. Wheelo enters the battle, Goku fires a Kamehameha alongside Gohan, Krillin and Master Roshi though it has no effect. After seeing his son get taken down, Goku uses the Kaio-ken x3 and briefly gains an edge, he attempts to finish off Dr. Wheelo with a Kamehameha but gets overpowered until he uses the Kaio-ken x4 and sends Dr. Wheelo upwards into the air though he survives. Just as Dr. Wheelo is planning to fire a blast that will destroy the Earth, Goku forms a Spirit Bomb that he uses to destroy him and save the planet.

The Tree of Might
Goku is bathing in a barrel outside of his house with his son when a dragon that Gohan had befriended named Icarus shows up at their home. Chi-Chi says that he can't keep it and demands he take it back up to the mountains. Goku however shows Gohan a small cave nearby where Icarus can reside. At his home with the rest of the Dragon Team present, King Kai contacts them and informs them of the Tree of Might and the danger it possesses to the planet.

The group head out to the tree and try to destroy it with a combined blast to no avail. The Dragon Team are confronted by the Turles Crusher Corps. but when Turles appears and forcibly transforms Gohan into a Great Ape, Goku tries to get him to see reason while also avoiding his mighty blows. Gohan appears to calm down when Icarus appears and an annoyed Turles goes to kill him though Goku saves him by firing a blast that removes Gohan's tail and returns him too normal.

Though most of the Z Fighters are defeated, Goku is able to best all of them using the Kaio-ken technique. Turles is far stronger, but Goku gives a fair fight using the Kaio-ken. However, after Turles eats the fruit from the Tree of Might, Goku starts to lose his ground. Goku attempts a Spirit Bomb while the Z Fighters divert Turles' attention, but it is too weak due to the tree having absorbed up too much of the planet's energy. Goku tries once again this time taking the energy from the Tree of Might itself and Goku is finally able to destroy both Turles and the Tree of Might. Afterwards he goes on a camping trip with his friends.

Lord Slug
When news reaches that an asteroid is heading for Earth, Goku and Krillin head out to slow it down, not wanting to destroy it knowing that it is inhabited. The two fire Kamehameha Waves at it but fail as they are blown away by the fierce winds produced by the near clash of the planet with Earth. The asteroid in reality is home to Lord Slug, a very old Namekian that travels from planet to planet with his army. Lord Slug starts terraforming Earth to his liking and learns and gathers the Dragon Balls in order to recover his youth. Soon after this, Yajirobe finds Goku and Krillin and give him a Senzu Bean where they then head to the location of Lord Slug. Goku appears to save Gohan from Medamatcha and Angila who he kills with ease.

The final battle against Lord Slug is left in the hands of Goku, and Slug starts taking the upper hand using the Power of Darkness. However, an angry Goku transforms into a Pseudo Super Saiyan, allowing him to thrash Slug around but the form only lasts for a brief period. Slug transforms into a giant version of himself to outclass Goku and chases him around the city, but thanks to Piccolo's help, Slug is subdued by his weakness: his extremely sensitive hearing. While Slug is distracted, Piccolo gives what little strength remained in him to Goku.

Thanks to Piccolo, Goku is able to use the Kaio-ken x100 and charges straight through Slug's mid-section to seemingly defeat him. Goku begins to head upwards to destroy the terraforming generator but Slug, still alive, latches on to him. Goku now above the clouds, charges up a Spirit Bomb which he launches at Slug, sending him backwards into the generator, destroying them both. Having saved the world once again, Goku joins his friends.

Cooler's Revenge
Goku, Gohan, Icarus, Krillin and Oolong go on a camping trip in the woods when Cooler, Frieza's brother, comes to earth with his troops in order to avenge his brother by defeating Goku. Goku battles against Cooler's Armored Squadron by himself, even gaining an advantage against them until he sees Cooler who he mistakes for being Frieza. When Cooler attempts to blast Gohan who has shown up to back up his father, Goku tries to protect him and as a result is blasted in the back causing him to be seriously injured. Gohan takes him to hide in a cave and goes to get Senzu Beans to help him recover, while Cooler's troops try to find them. On his way back, he is attacked by Cooler's henchmen, but Piccolo stalls them long enough to let Gohan get a bean to Goku. Salza ultimately caught up with Gohan and destroyed the bean container, which caused Goku to express disbelief before passing out in despair, although he managed to get another bean (due to Yajirobe supplying Gohan with a free bean earlier) from Gohan.

After healing, he steps out to confront Cooler. Salza who was also nearby, punches Goku in the jaw to no effect. Goku powers up, with the force sending Salza flying and charges straight at Cooler. Goku then fights Cooler, first in the air and then underwater, seemingly evenly matched or with Goku having a slight edge. Cooler explains to Goku that he had found a way to surpass his brother and transforms into his fifth form where he greatly gains the upper hand even with Goku using the Kaio-ken. On the verge of defeat, Goku remembers his fallen friends and turns into a Super Saiyan where he becomes so strong that Cooler can hardly faze him with a punch. An angered Cooler power up a Supernova Cooler which pressures Goku and pushes him backwards but Goku retaliates with a Kamehameha which pushes the Supernova back into Cooler, sending him out into space and into the sun where he is killed.

After the battle, a heavily drained Goku is surprised and helpless when Salza emerges from the rubble, but he is soon killed by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon.

Super Android 13!
Goku goes with Chi-Chi and Gohan on a shopping trip in the city and later stop at a penthouse restaurant to eat where they meet up with Krillin, Future Trunks, Master Roshi and Oolong. They are suddenly attacked by two androids, Android 14 and Android 15, who were created by Dr. Gero's Supercomputer with their only goal being to destroy Goku. Goku confronts the two in the skies above the city but fighting two against one, he is at a disadvantage. When Trunks arrives to assist him the two decide to move away from the city lest it be destroyed and head to the artic.

The fighting begins once again and Goku is pummelled upon until Android 13 appears. While Future Trunks takes on Android 14 and 15, Goku battles against Android 13 with Gohan and Krillin arriving at the area to aid them. Goku is able to hold his own well but is continually at a disadvantage all the same. Soon after Vegeta shows up and takes on Android 15, the three Saiyans transform into a Super Saiyan. Vegeta and Future Trunks manage to destroy their respective Androids, but the more powerful Android 13 remains standing and absorbs their computer chips and power cells causing him to transform into Super Android 13. Goku is completely overwhelmed by the powered-up Android and is blasted into the ocean. There he begins to gather energy to create a Spirit Bomb while the others are able to buy him some time. Wanting to get more energy, he turns Super Saiyan, which makes him accidentally absorb the Spirit Bomb. However, he is able to punch Super Android 13 and channel his energy into the attack, making the android explode. Afterwards Goku and his friends go to the hospital to tend to their wounds.

The Return of Cooler
Sensing that New Namek is in danger, Goku and his friends travel there in a spaceship in order to help their Namekian friends. After getting there, they discover that Cooler was saved by the Big Gete Star from his destruction, and is now back as a machine, leading an army of robots that have enslaved the Namekians. While the Cyclopian Guards manage to defeat and capture Goku's friends, Goku tries to fight Meta-Cooler but he is no match for Cooler's new powers; he attempts to use the Kaio-ken but still proves to be at a disadvantage and his Instant Transmission is revealed to also be a technique used by Cooler.

Even after turning into a Super Saiyan, Goku fails to gain the upper hand due to Cooler's Rebirth ability. When Goku is caught up in a choke hold, he is saved by Vegeta who also turns into a Super Saiyan. Eventually the two are able to combine their powers and are able to stop Meta-Cooler. Unfortunately for the two, thousands of copies of Cooler appear, who proceed to knock down and capture the two Saiyans. They awaken to find themselves tangled up, in front of the Meta-Cooler Core. Cooler tries to steal the Saiyan's energy to give more power to the Big Gete Star, but Goku and Vegeta are able to overload it by sending all of their energy at once. They thus destroy the Big Gete Star and the robot army, and Goku and Vegeta manage to blast the last remains of Cooler.

Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan
Goku is in a suit in order to help Chi-Chi with getting Gohan in a school, repeatedly being told what to say to the interviewers so they can leave a good impression. During the interview, he is contacted by King Kai who warns him about the appearance of the Legendary Super Saiyan and the damage he has already dealt to the South Galaxy. Apologizing to Chi-Chi for having to leave, Goku teleports to King Kai's Planet. There, after being fed a ten-course meal, he is told about that this new Saiyan is even stronger than Goku and he becomes excited by it.

After King Kai points him in the right direction, Goku teleports around the galaxy trying to focus on the Legendary Super Saiyan's ki, eventually arriving on New Planet Vegeta, with him accidentally being punched mid-Instant Transmission by Krillin as the latter was showing off. There Goku met several of his friends, including Vegeta, who had been brought there by a Saiyan called Paragus. He also meets his son Broly who begins to lose control upon seeing him due to deep-down hatred of him stemming from traumatic events relating to his birth. During the night, Broly attacks Goku who is forced to defend himself but before Broly can get too out of control, Paragus appears and uses a device to calm him down.

They eventually discover that Paragus' son, Broly, is in fact the Legendary Super Saiyan. Broly breaks free of his father's control and attacks Goku and the Z Fighters, who are no match for him. Goku is the last one still standing, and all the beaten fighters give their energy to Goku, including Vegeta after some convincing. Goku then uses all the power that the Z-Fighters gave him to power one punch, defeating Broly. Goku escapes with his friends using Instant Transmission, just before the asteroid destroys the planet. Upon returning home, he tells Chi-Chi that his favorite hobbies are reading and sports, the same phrase that Chi-Chi wanted Goku to say at the school interview. Chi-Chi then faints out of exasperation.

Bojack Unbound
While a dead Goku is hanging around with King Kai in the Other World, the Z Fighters enter a tournament on Earth, which was hijacked by the alien mercenary Bojack. He had been freed from his imprisonment when Cell made King Kai's planet explode, thanks to Goku. The Z Fighters are unable to defeat Bojack and his band, and when Bojack starts to bear-hug Gohan to death, Goku teleports to Earth using Instant Transmission (something somehow against the rules of the dead), which allows him to appear briefly and punch Bojack away. Goku also tells Gohan to protect the Earth and unleash all the anger and power he had in him. Goku then vanishes back to the Other World. Not sure if he really saw his father, Gohan is nevertheless encouraged enough to release his power and defeat Bojack.

Broly - Second Coming
Due to being long dead, Goku doesn't appear until he is brought back in spirit form after Goten thinks to himself "I wish dad was here" and Shenron grants the wish. Goku aids Gohan and Goten in their Kamehameha clash against Broly and his Omega Blaster. After helping his sons defeat Broly, he vanishes and returns to the Other World.

Bio-Broly
Goku makes a brief appearance, shown eating while being given a message by Bubbles saying that he and Pikkon have to go to Hell and calm Broly down because he is on a rampage but decides to finish his meal first.

Fusion Reborn
Goku is fighting with Pikkon in the Other World tournament ring when Janemba appeared and the barriers between dimensions were disrupted. Because Other World was no longer isolated from the physical plane, those who had died were able to walk amongst the living. Goku used Instant Transmission to go to King Yemma's check-in station with Pikkon and saw the first form of Janemba sitting on the station's roof. Eager to engage Janemba in battle, Goku gleefully left Pikkon behind to free Yemma (much to Pikkon's dismay). Goku was soon forced to use his Super Saiyan 3 form to combat Janemba's unique arsenal of techniques.

At Super Saiyan 3, Goku made quick work of Janemba, only to be outclassed when Janemba transformed into a smaller, fiercer demon. Vegeta soon arrived on the scene (no longer being confined to Hell due to the disruption in the dimensional barriers) and was persuaded by Goku to attempt the Fusion Dance. Their first attempt failed and produced a fat Veku. Due to sheer luck, they were able to survive against Janemba until the fusion expired. After regrouping, Goku and Vegeta were able to fuse properly while Pikkon distracted Janemba. Gogeta appeared as a Super Saiyan and destroyed Janemba with ease. Later, Goku and Vegeta are seen standing at the Blood Pond where Vegeta vanishes and goes back to Hell. Goku hopes that they can see each other again, but like in the series, Vegeta only tells him "we're never fusing again."

Wrath of the Dragon
Goku tries to open a magic Music Box that Gohan had gotten from Hoi but he cannot open it, so they go and find the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron. Goku finds his Dragon Ball at a Zoo where he jumps into a lion's den in order to retrieve it where he has attacked by them but is entirely unharmed. When Shenron opened the box, Tapion came out but because Tapion was freed, the upper half of Hirudegarn was also freed. At night, Goku attends a barbecue with his friends at Capsule Corporation. The next day Tapion went to Trunks' home and Bulma made him a house with the same material as the music box, so Tapion could sleep without worrying about Hirudegarn, but when Tapion went to sleep, Hirudegarn escaped and found his lower half, thus making him one monster again.

When Goku, Gohan and Goten try to attack him, it is ineffective because Hirudegarn is too fast. Later, Gotenks is formed, and he gets Hirudegarn down, but it only made him transform and Hirudegarn knocks Gotenks out. When there was almost no hope left, Goku transformed into Super Saiyan 3 and started to fight Hirudegarn. When Trunks wanted to help Goku, he said that he wanted to handle Hirudegarn alone. Goku notices Hirudegarn's weakness, that its intense emotions drain its energy, leaving it open to attack. He taunts Hirudegarn which causes it to become angered, dodging one last punch, Goku strikes with his Dragon Fist that defeats the monster for good. Goku then joins the others as they bid farewell to Tapion.

Intelligence: Below Average socially (Raised in the mountains with his adoptive grandpa before the latter’s death, knows little to nothing about how society functions), At least Below Average, possibly Above Average academics wise (While training with Master Roshi he learned about Math & Calculus, though Goku has displayed he can’t count beyond 18 after being explained to him what comes after 18 he was able to quickly count past it, along with this he has shown to have better understanding academically of situations), Extraordinary Genius combat wise (Should be the same level of intelligence as his main timeline self, who copies a Kamehameha after seeing it once, which is supposed to take 50 years to learn according to Roshi, copied Master Roshi’s ultimate technique the afterimage after seeing it done, could copy Tien’s solar flare and his flying technique and could copy the demon clan’s air ki techniques. Goku is an incredibly skilled fighter to the point that he is able to easily outskill trained Martial Artists such as Krillin and Yamcha and match prodigies such as Tien and even nearly beat his Master, Roshi, after training with him for a few months)

Powers and Abilities

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Acrobatics (Capable of doing large superhuman jumps and leaps along with acrobatic flips during combat), Martial Arts, Vehicular Mastery (Able to drive cars), Weapon Mastery (Goku can use his power pole in combat and for other practices, such as a way to extend objects up without the use of his hands, along with reaching "the heavens" (Kami's Lookout)), Enhanced Senses (Goku’s nose is as sharp as a dog’s allowing him to smell the scent of people from far away. Can sense people in a village even when they are all hiding), Pure Heart (Goku is able to ride the nimbus cloud, which only those of a pure heart can ride. Was directly noted he doesn't have a single bit of evil in his heart), Accelerated Development (Training; Physical Stats, Skill, & Abilities. As Goku trains he naturally grows stronger at a much faster rate then any of the earthlings. As an example, in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament saga, Goku in a few months of training matched Master Roshi, one of the strongest Earthlings. Goku is able to increase his ki allowing him to mimic various attacks and gain access to abilities that even if teachers could not, such as how he was able to access Kaio-ken, which even King Kai couldn't access when he made the move itself), Bulletproof (Asides from gag scenes, bullets are unable to pierce him), Extrasensory Perception (After drinking the Water of the Gods, Goku was able to sense ki. Goku has been trained by Mr. Popo in learning to hone his sixth sense to be able to notice people attacking him from behind without using his eyes and feeling the environment around him. Goku is capable of hearing telepathic conversations), Ki Manipulation (All beings in dragon ball have ki, the very life force energy of all characters, ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard, higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them), Reactive Power Level (A saiyan’s power increases if they survive from injuries in battle, with their powers allowing them to greatly exceed their previous levels beforehand), Power Mimicry (Goku has a consistent streak of mimicking abilities he’s seen others use, the most famous being him easily mimicking the kamehameha, an ability stated by Roshi takes 50 years of practice to use, along with mimicking the demon clan’s air attack abilities and Tien’s solar flare, and Goku being capable of mimicking Roshi’s afterimage technique after seeing him use it against Krillin, with Goku even being able to improve upon it), Rage Power (Mere rage can amplify a saiyan to a level that's believed to be a myth even by the highest levels of saiyans in the verse), Sheer Will (Goku has an immense amount of willpower, to the point that he can start his heart beating again after it stops from sheer will, along with drinking the water of the gods and suffering immense and unexplainable pain for six hours straight without ever giving in just to gain more power), Damage Boost (His beam attacks such as the kamehameha, are far beyond his regular attacks which is an attack that focuses all of Goku's latent energy into a single blast), Immortality Negation (Type 7; Gotenks can destroy the Dictator’s undead army with their Ki; others with Ki should thus be able to do the same), Non-Physical Interaction (The Z Fighters were able to harm the Ghost Warriors), Afterimage Creation (Could use Jackie Chun’s afterimage technique. Could eventually make an even better version of Chun’s afterimage technique), Precognition (Type 2. During his training with Korrin he learns how to read his opponents movements), Air Manipulation, Shockwave Generation & Breath Attack (Goku can unleash a great blast of air from his lungs to momentarily stop himself in the air. Through punching the air with tremendous force, Goku creates a shockwave that blows opponents away before they have a chance to dodge), Flight (By the end of original Dragon Ball he learns the flight technique from seeing Tien and co. do it), Pressure Point Strikes (Used it to chop King Chappa and knock him out in one blow), Power Suppression (Type 1. With ki control, able to suppress one's ki to be able to fight weaker enemies, along with vary it to hide their true strength), Light Manipulation (With the solar flare, creates a flash of light that blinds the opponent), Aura, Psuedo-Fear Manipulation, Limited Soul Manipulation & Pain Manipulation (Powerful ki users can exert their ki onto a user greatly harming them, ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce, along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed, exerting fear into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power), Spatial Manipulation (Goku can erase his presence completely, and ki allowing him to appear wherever, even when Piccolo punched him he didn't actually hit the real Goku), Telepathy (Goku is able to telepathyically speak in people's heads. Read Krillin's mind, could read into King Kai’s telepathy with Guru and telepathically speak with King Kai), Reactive Adaptation (Goku is able to adapt to higher levels of gravity after training within them), Power Nullification (Can nullify attacks with his ki alone), Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training), Power Absorption & Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others), Healing (Ki is shown to have healing properties), Absorption (Goku can absorb the ki gathered from the Spirit Bomb and use it to fuel his own ki), Forcefield Creation (Capable of creating energy barriers), Power Suppression (Type 1. With ki control, able to suppress one's ki to be able to fight weaker enemies, along with vary it to hide their true strength), Statistics Amplification (With Kaioken transformations, capable of increasing his strength and durability at the sacrifice of his body), Power Manifestation (Goku is capable of coming up with new abilities), Attack Reflection (Goku is capable of pushing away ki attacks), Resistance to Hell Manipulation (Goku is completely unaffected by attacks that effect the evil in one due to having no evil in his heart), Pain (Is capable of drinking the Water of the Gods and withstanding the unimaginable pain from it which even a small bit of it can induce terrible pains. Consistently in this movie and later movies takes unimaginable levels of pain from foes far stronger then him and still has the will to fight), Extreme Heats & Extreme Colds (Unaffected by the heat of the desert. Could take a bath in boiling water. Could fight within the ice mountains with just his regular ki, though he notably started freezing when he fell in the ice cold water), Illusion Creation (Type 1. When focused, Goku can see into his mind's eye to see through illusions)

Wish Granting & Summoning (With the seven Dragon Balls, Goku can call down Shenron to grant his wish), Fusionism (With the Potara Earrings, can fuse with another one that wears the earrings regardless of both sides strength), Radar Sensing (With the Dragon Radar, a radar meant to locate Dragon Balls), Purification (With heart medicine, cures a heart virus that wasn't curable in Goku's time), Dimensional Storage (With Capsules, can store objects as large as houses in them), Healing (Low-Mid. With Senzu beans, can heal even wounds such as holes on one’s body)

Standard Equipment

  • Power Pole: The Power Pole is a magical, length-changing staff that is owned and wielded by Goku for most of the original Dragon Ball series. Before Master Roshi gave the Power Pole to Grandpa Gohan, it was owned by Korin. Although Goku uses it primarily as a weapon, its true purpose is to use its size-changing ability to travel from Korin Tower to The Lookout.
  • Flying Nimbus: Flying Nimbus is a magical, yellow cloud that serves as a way of transportation. Goku obtains the Nimbus from Master Roshi as compensation for saving Turtle. It served Goku and his sons well throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, by acting as a way for them to fly around at high speeds without using up any energy.
  • Senzu Beans: Senzu Beans are mystical beans with immense rejuvenation properties, being capable of healing entire wounds, such as one's stomach being punctured.

Optional Equipment

  • Dragon Balls: Dragon Balls are the titular artifacts of the Dragon Ball series. They are large, crystalline spheres that feature five-pointed stars inside of themselves; individually, they have no powers, but united they have the ability to call forth their associated Eternal Dragon. Originally under Kami, Shenron could only grant one wish. However, under Dende, Shenron can grant three wishes, however since Dende is not powerful enough, Shenron can only fulfill two of the three wishes if a large number of people are revived using one of the wishes. Alternatively, Porunga can grant three wishes, however, Porunga could only bring one person back from the dead per wish as compared to Shenron who can revive an unspecified number per wish. Later, Porunga's power is strengthened by Moori to bring back as many lives as needed without any reduction in the remaining number of wishes.
  • Dragon Radar: An invention of Bulma made to track down Dragon Balls. While Goku and other people can sense the Dragon Balls' energy in a general area, the Dragon Radar can pinpoint their exact location from across the entire planet. This let Goku and his friends track all the Dragon Balls within days rather than years, or hours with teleportation.

Notable Techniques

  • Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper: A technique taught to Goku by Grandpa Gohan which employs one of three attack styles; either a closed-fist assault, a two-finger jabbing assault, or an open-palm thrust assault. It was Goku's signature attack early on during his childhood, soon afterwards being replaced with the Kamehameha.
  • Tail Attack: A technique used by those who have tail in order to attack their opponents. They can use it to whip or constrict the opponent. Goku uses this to break free from Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Double Axe Hand: Goku cups his hands together and reels back, then slams his fists on the opponent.
  • Eight-Arm Fist: A physical technique that involves its user moving their arms fast enough that they seemingly have eight of them, allowing them to attack and defend themselves much more efficiently. Used to counter Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Crazy Fist: A distraction technique used by Goku and designed to confuse and taunt the opponent. Pretending to be a wild uncontrollable dog or monkey, Goku catches his opponent off guard, and eventually knocks him out with a swift kick by jumping from behind. Goku uses this in reaction to Jackie Chun's Drunken Fist.
  • Tornado!: After calling the name of the attack, Goku spins while rushing on the opponent to attack him/her. Used against Nam.
  • Afterimage Technique: Goku creates perfect replica afterimages of himself to give the illusion of him still being in a location making it difficult for the opponent to actually harm his true self.
  • Mid-Air Stop: While falling to the ground, Goku exhales his breath like an explosive blast to stop his decent. Goku uses this technique against King Chappa in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament preliminaries.
  • Tail Helicopter: Goku swings his tail in a circle fast enough to hover and fly freely. Used only once, in his fight against Jackie Chun in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
  • Agile Style: After his training under Kami, Goku could remove the Weighted portions Turtle School Uniform to increase his power level and agility due to being no longer incumbered by the heavy weights allowing him to utilize a more agile fighting style hence its name. Goku first used it during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and later when he confronted his brother Raditz alongside Piccolo. According to Raditz's Scouter, Goku's power level rose from 334 to 416 indicating the weight removal alone increased his power level by 82. This state was named in Dragon Ball Legends (albeit in relation to Piccolo & Pikkon's use of Agile Style) where it is the "base" form used by Goku (DBL22-01S) which represents Goku from the period during which he fought Raditz.
  • Dragonthrow: Goku grabs his opponent's arm, leg, tail, or antenna, then he spins and throws them away.
  • Meteor Combination: First, Goku charges at the opponent and elbows them away. Then, he attacks the opponent with a powerful barrage of kicks and punches, ending with a heavy punch to their stomach. When the opponent lays on the ground paralyzed, Goku jumps up in the air and fires a Super Kamehameha down at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Meteor Smash: Goku punches the opponent in the stomach. Then, he punches the opponent away and flies after them to right hook kick them in their face. Finally, Goku axe kicks the side of the opponent's head, knocking them away and inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Bōjutsu: The art of wielding a staff which Goku utilizes when wielding his Power Pole. Goku learned it from the Power Pole's previous owner, his adoptive Grandpa Gohan. Goku's Bōjutsu skills are so great that he can use his Power Pole to deflect bullets as shown during his assault on Muscle Tower. Additionally, due to the Power Pole's mystical length changing properties, his attack range with the Power Pole is much greater than an average staff.
  • Kaoi-ken Finish: First, Goku charges at the opponent and kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up after the opponent and double axe-handle punches them down to the ground. Next, he powers up to his Kaio-ken technique as he charges down at the opponent and double-punches them in their back. Finally, Goku quickly lands on the ground and catches the opponent on their back before throwing them onto the ground, inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Kaoi-Ken Attack: Goku powers up to Kaio-ken x3 as he charges at the opponent and roundhouse kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up in the air and punches the opponent away. Next, he flies up over the opponent and down behind to double kick them further up into the air. Finally, Goku flies up into the air around the opponent and hook kicks them down into the ground, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
  • Ki Blast: The most basic energy attack, Goku creates a small form of energy that he blasts at an opponent, usually he uses this to keep his distance from an enemy or to distract them so he can land another attack.
  • Kiai: A technique where Goku affects the air currents around him with ki to produce powerful shockwaves in order to strike the opponent at mid-range.
  • Kamehameha: Goku's signature move since obtaining it. It unleashes a powerful and long-stretching blue energy blast from his cupped hands. Goku first learns the move as a kid after witnessing Master Roshi using it. It can be charged to compete with practically any enemy attack. Since mastering this technique, Goku has continued to improve on it and develop new variations of it.
  • Spirit Bomb: Easily Goku's most powerful techniques and arguably the strongest in the series, it allows Goku to channel ki from all sources of life that he can detect and focus it all into a single energy ball. It was taught to him by King Kai during his training for the upcoming battle against Vegeta and Nappa. Over time, Goku continually learned to expand the range of which he could gather energy, thereby increasing both the size and power of the Spirit Bomb. He reserves this technique as a last-ditch effort for only the most powerful of foes.
  • Instant Transmission: Goku learns this technique on the Planet Yardrat after his battle with Frieza by learning Spirit Control - which also allowed him to sense ki from a much greater distance. This technique allows him to teleport to any location so long as he can find an energy source to home onto. However, it also greatly extends his ability to sense energy. Noticeably in Yo Son Goku, he seemingly improved on the technique as transports to the radish field without sensing anyone, possibly because he had accurate enough knowledge of where it is.
  • Solar Flare: Goku places his hands close to the center of his face with the fingers spread toward his eyes. He then calls out the name of the technique, which provokes a white light to fire out and blind everything watching except him, since he is projecting the light.
  • Kaoi-ken: Goku learns this technique while training under King Kai after dying against Raditz. While using it and any of its multipliers, Goku's various capacities and techniques are all proportionally increased. However, the strain of using too high a multiplier and/or for too long can be dangerous and greatly damage his body. As such, he ceased using it after his gaining Super Saiyan. While he can combine the two powers, Goku never tried this while alive as doing so could lead to near-certain death. Later, however, with his Super Saiyan Blue, taking advantage of his divine form's superior energy control and more naturally calm mindedness, he was able to use this technique more regularly.
  • Pseudo Super Saiyan: During Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Goku achieves this form in an attempt to defeat Lord Slug. Through rage of being beaten down, Goku unleashed a huge amount of aura and became a false-like Super Saiyan, which gave him more speed and strength for a few seconds enough to thrash Lord Slug. In this form, he looks similar to his Kaio-ken form, but he becomes bulkier, except his eyes are whited out like Broly's in his Legendary Super Saiyan form, and his hair stands up and gains a red tint.
  • Super Saiyan: Goku achieves this form in a rage after Frieza killed Krillin. In this form, Goku's muscle and height slight increase and his skin turns lighter. His eyes become noticeably sterner and more defined with green eyes. His hair becomes blond and stands with no loose strands. His power also generates a yellow aura. In the anime, when unleashing the full intensity of his power, Goku's aura also produces some slight electrical sparks. Goku's demeanor is greatly affected by this form, making him more aggressive and irritable.
    • Super Saiyan Second Grade: Realizing that the androids' power exceeds a Super Saiyan, Goku entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to surpass the basic Super Saiyan form. Ultimately, Goku unlocked this form after weeks of training. However, Goku realized that this form spends too much ki to be maintained. Rather than attempting the more arduous and time-consuming task of refining this form, Goku came to the conclusion that the basic Super Saiyan form is better suited for combat, making a plan to master it and abandon this form completely. As a result of this and discovering more powerful forms, this form is never used again.
    • Super Saiyan Third Grade: Along with Second Grade, Goku achieves this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. While vastly stronger than Second Grade, the power output is too intense, causing Goku's muscles to become engorged from the struggle of maintaining this unsteady power boost. This instability drained his ki too fast to be of use for long. It also causes an extreme drop in his speed and agility, tiring him even more and reducing his effectiveness overall. Goku noted that while much stronger than Semi-Perfect Cell, it meant nothing if he could not actually hit his foe with it. This made this form impractical against foes of any real speed. Instead of training to overcome this problem, Goku decides that simply mastering the basic Super Saiyan, feeling that it is the best way to fight and gain power. As such a result, this form is never used again.
    • Mastered Super Saiyan: After realizing the weaknesses inherent to the higher Super Saiyan grades, Goku concluded that mastery over the basic Super Saiyan form would be more beneficial. He used the remainder of his time chamber training learning to maintain Super Saiyan for extended periods. Gradually, he overcame the heightened aggression and uneasiness that accompanies this form to feel as natural as his base form, reducing the energy drain to nothing and increasing his endurance to achieve a max output for this form without drawbacks even in regular life. Ultimately, he is able to enter, maintain, and fight in this form for as long as he desires at its full potential with no loss in efficiency or performance. In the anime, with this mastery, during the Tournament of Power, Goku - having gone well-beyond his limits - was able to flash between base and Super Saiyan to defeat Jiren alongside Frieza despite his battered and exhausted state.
    • Spirit Bomb Super Saiyan: This state first appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!. When Android 13 proved too powerful to defeat, Goku obtained this state by first creating a Spirit Bomb, and then absorbing it. While in this form, Goku loses practically all cognitive thought, battling purely on instincts as his emotions are pushed to extreme levels of rage.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Goku achieved this form at some time after Cell's defeat while in the Other World. In this form, Goku gains some changes; his hair becomes spikier, his forehead has only three bangs over it, making his hair more defined than his other previous Super Saiyan forms. His muscles also become more defined, and his aura also generates electricity surrounding his body, while the aura grows markedly larger and more vibrant. Since gaining greater forms, Goku reserves this form for opponents he takes semi-seriously.
  • Super Saiyan 3: Goku's strongest form in the original manga and anime. Goku achieved this level after years of training in Other World, where he could put unlimited energy into this form. In this form, his hair reaches down to his thighs and his eyebrows vanish completely while making the forehead and eye ridges larger and more prominent. His muscle mass grows noticeable larger more defined while his eyes gain green irises. His aura also becomes rounder with larger electrical sparks. Goku first used this form against Innocent Buu during the Majin Buu Saga, where he had a slight advantage over the Majin. However, this form is extremely draining in terms of energy due to the living world having less energy to siphon. This made him tire fast and even cut Goku's time left on Earth from hours to a mere thirty minutes after using this form for a short time. When attempting to gather enough energy to defeat Kid Buu, he was unable to sustain it as he had not taken into account the strain overcoming his living body, and soon reverted to his base state. Altogether, these heavy disadvantages make it impractical to use this form out of the afterlife and even more while alive.
  • Fusion Dance: A short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size. To correctly perform the Fusion, the fuses must strike the poses in a perfectly symmetrical image of one another. The result of a correctly performed Fusion Dance is a superior being whose power is multiplied several-fold over that of the individual fuses.

Other

Standard Tactics: Goku is a trained and gifted martial artists who has always kept the same tactics when entering battle. Goku will size up his opponent to see where their strengths and weaknesses lay, see how strong they are, and dish out various martial arts attacks and techniques to overwhelm his opponent. Goku will never immedieatly go all out from the start unless he fully needs to and will usually start with warm ups. Due to this fighting style, even if the enemy he's facing is already transformed he will still opt for a while to fight them in base form before transforming himself.

Weaknesses: His durability drops when off guard. Goku will not immedieatly go all out during a battle to size up his opponent and see how strong they are unless he openly needs too, making his guard low in some cases. Even if the enemy he's facing is already transformed he will still opt for a while to fight them in base form before transforming himself.

Note: The Dragon Ball movies do not take place within the main continuity, and instead within a different dimension[1].

Trivia

  • Interestingly enough in Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans there is a location called "Another Dimension" where Goku can battle Broly. This implies that Goku went into the movie continuity timeline. The area being called "Another Dimension" might also be in reference to Toriyama's statement that the movies take place in a different dimension.
