Son Goku

From The Codex
(Redirected from Son Goku (Dragon Ball Super))
Dragon Ball/Son Goku
Jump to navigationJump to search

Son Goku serves as the central protagonist of the Dragon Ball series. Originally hailing from Planet Vegeta, he was dispatched to Earth as an infant to escape the planet's impending destruction at the hands of the tyrant Frieza. Discovered and raised by the martial artist Son Gohan in the remote wilderness of Mount Paozu, Goku grew up unaware of his Saiyan heritage. He inherited his adoptive grandfather's name, which he would later pass on to his own firstborn son.

From his early adventures seeking the Dragon Balls alongside Bulma to his intensive training under Master Roshi and King Kai, Goku's journey has been defined by an insatiable desire to grow stronger and test his limits against formidable opponents. His pure-hearted nature and unwavering determination have made him Earth's most reliable defender. Throughout his life, Goku has repeatedly stood as the universe's protector against numerous powerful adversaries, including the Saiyan prince Vegeta, the galactic emperor Frieza, the bio-android Cell, and the ancient demon Majin Buu.

Despite his incredible power and achievements, Goku remains humble and driven primarily by his love of fighting rather than glory or recognition. His legacy extends beyond his own accomplishments, having inspired countless allies and even former enemies to become heroes themselves.

Son Goku

I trained under Kaiō, the lord of worlds... I thought I'd hit the peak of power... But Vegeta was... so far above me...! I was shocked... scared... But... somewhere inside... I was happy.
~ Goku to Krillin

I am the warrior you've heard of in the legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury. That's what I am. I am the Super Saiyan, Son Goku!
~ Son Goku to Frieza

And.... this is.... THE ONE THAT ONCE AGAIN SURPASSED ITS PREDECESSOR....
~ Goku

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman
Kakarot remained in his incubation pod for three years following his birth, until his parents, Bardock and Gine, decided to release him. Concerned about Frieza’s growing threat, Bardock chose to send Kakarot to Earth in an Attack Ball. Roughly a month after his departure, Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza.

Shortly after arriving on Earth, Kakarot’s pod crash-landed on Mount Paozu, where he was discovered by an elderly martial artist named Gohan. Taking the child in, Gohan offered him food and care. During the meal, Gohan gave him the name "Son Goku." Although Goku was somewhat calmed by the food, he displayed poor manners, such as standing on the table instead of using a chair. Gohan also hinted that their initial encounter involved a brief scuffle, which he managed to win thanks to his superior martial arts skill, despite Goku’s Saiyan nature.

Before Dragon Ball
Initially, Goku was aggressive and disobedient, often refusing to listen to Gohan. But one day, he fell from a steep ravine and hit his head, an accident that left him in a coma and caused permanent memory loss. When he recovered, he no longer remembered his mission or showed any of the violent tendencies he had before. From then on, he became a calm and friendly child. Gohan taught him martial arts and basic knowledge about the world, as they lived in isolation deep in Mount Paozu without contact with other people.

At some point, Gohan discovered that Goku would transform when exposed to the full moon, so he warned him never to look at it. But one night, Goku did, and transformed into a Great Ape, unknowingly killing Gohan in the process. Afterward, Goku continued living in the same home and learned to survive on his own. Having no memory of his past, he came to believe that his birth parents had abandoned him in the mountains, leaving him to be found by Grandpa Gohan.

Pilaf Saga
Goku is introduced at age 12 in the original Dragon Ball manga and anime, though he initially claims to be 14 due to his difficulty with counting. He lives alone in the remote Mount Paozu region, carrying the Power Pole and a four-star Dragon Ball passed down from his grandfather.

One day, after finishing his chores and catching a large fish, Goku is struck by a car, mistaking it for some kind of monster, since he’s never seen a vehicle before. When the driver, a girl named Bulma, shoots him out of fear and sees that it barely affects him, she quickly surrenders. Goku, equally confused, mentions that he’s never seen a girl before, having lived in isolation with only his grandfather for company.

He brings Bulma to his home, where she spots the four-star Dragon Ball. Goku refuses to let her take it, since it's a memento from his grandfather. Instead, Bulma invites Goku to join her on a journey to gather all seven Dragon Balls and summon the wish-granting Dragon, though she doesn’t mention that the Balls scatter after the wish is granted.

That night, while camping in Bulma's Capsule House, Goku encounters various modern inventions for the first time, like lights, a TV, and even a bath. Early the next morning, he removes Bulma’s underwear while she’s asleep, not realizing that men and women have different anatomies.

Later that day, Goku encounters a turtle and decides to return it to the ocean, prompting Bulma to accompany him. Along the way, they confront and defeat a Bear Thief attempting to capture the turtle. Upon reaching the beach, Goku meets his future mentor, the turtle hermit known as Master Roshi. Impressed, Master Roshi gifts Goku a magical flying cloud called the Flying Nimbus, which can only be ridden by those with pure hearts—Goku has no trouble riding it. Bulma receives the three-star Dragon Ball as a trade for revealing her underwear to the elderly hermit, although she is actually unclothed, as Goku had removed her clothes the previous night.

Three days later, Goku and Bulma arrive at Aru Village, which is terrorized by Oolong, an evil shapeshifter who kidnaps the daughters of the villagers. Goku attempts to impersonate Pochawompa to locate Oolong's hideout but fails, deciding instead to confront Oolong directly. After pursuing him outside the village, Goku captures Oolong, forcing him to release the kidnapped girls. As a reward, Goku and Bulma obtain the six-star Dragon Ball, and Oolong joins them on their journey.

While crossing the Diablo Desert toward Fire Mountain, Goku battles a bandit named Yamcha, who is acquainted with Oolong's former classmate, Puar. During their duel, Yamcha is surprised when Goku uses his Power Pole, realizing Goku is the grandson of the famed martial artist Gohan. Despite nearly succumbing to Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist due to hunger, Bulma's arrival causes Yamcha to flee, as he fears women. That night, Goku, Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Puar spend the night at Oolong’s House-Wagon, where Goku explains the Dragon Balls to Oolong while Yamcha and Puar secretly listen.

The following morning, Goku fights Yamcha again after Yamcha destroys the House-Wagon and tries to rob them. Goku knocks out one of Yamcha’s teeth, and in a deceptive gesture of apology, Yamcha gives them a car that secretly contains a tracking device to follow their movements.

Two days later, the group arrives at Fire Mountain, where Goku confronts the Ox-King, who tries to kill Bulma and Oolong. When Goku summons the Flying Nimbus, the Ox-King ceases his attack and reveals that the man who gave Goku the cloud is also the master who trained him. To extinguish the flames surrounding the Ox-King’s castle atop the mountain, Goku is tasked with retrieving the Bansho Fan from Master Roshi after picking up the Ox-King’s daughter, Chi-Chi.

Upon reaching Master Roshi’s island, he explains that he accidentally threw the fan away and decides to put out the fire himself. Returning to Fire Mountain, Master Roshi uses his signature technique, the Kamehameha, to extinguish the flames, inadvertently destroying the mountain as well. To Master Roshi’s surprise, Goku quickly imitates the wave, producing a blast powerful enough to demolish their car. Meanwhile, Bulma and Oolong find the Dragon Ball amid the rubble. Master Roshi then requests that Goku train under him once he completes his quest to collect all the Dragon Balls.

On their journey to find the final Dragon Ball, Goku and Bulma stop in a town controlled by a gang called the Rabbit Mob. During their stay, they clash with the gang, but with Yamcha’s assistance, Goku defeats the gang’s leader, Monster Carrot. Continuing their quest, they are ambushed by a robot piloted by Shu, who steals five of their Dragon Balls. Fortunately, Goku had kept his four-star Dragon Ball separate from the others.

Yamcha offers them a ride to Pilaf’s Castle to retrieve the stolen Dragon Balls. Upon arrival, they are trapped in a room filled with sleeping gas, and their four-star Dragon Ball is taken. When they awaken, Emperor Pilaf summons the dragon Shenron and attempts to wish for world domination. However, Oolong disrupts the plan by wishing for a pair of panties after escaping through a small hole created by Goku’s Kamehameha.

The group is then imprisoned in a cell designed to electrocute them when sunlight enters. That night, Goku accidentally gazes at the full moon, triggering his transformation into a Great Ape. In this form, he destroys the cell and much of Pilaf’s castle. To stop the rampage, Yamcha grabs Goku’s tail while Puar transforms into scissors to cut it off, causing Goku to revert to his normal self.

The next morning, Oolong speculates that Goku might not be human but rather “some kinda space alien.” Declining his new friends’ invitation to travel to West City, Goku says farewell and leaves to train with Master Roshi. As he flies away on the Flying Nimbus, Goku happily remarks that the world is an incredible place.

Tournament Saga
After completing his quest for the Dragon Balls, Goku parts ways with Bulma and the others to train under Master Roshi. Roshi agrees to take him on as a student, but only if Goku can bring him an attractive girl. When Goku fails to find one, another aspiring student named Krillin arrives, seeking training as well, and joins Goku in his efforts. After fending off some police officers—with Krillin hiding behind him—they finally bring a girl named Launch, who has a split personality.

Pleased with Launch, Roshi takes Goku and Krillin to his secluded Training Island for rigorous preparation. Their training involves unusual tasks seemingly unrelated to fighting, such as delivering milk to boost stamina, doing construction work to build strength, escaping from sharks, and dodging bee stings—all while carrying heavy Turtle Shells. Through this intense regimen, both become among the strongest fighters on Earth. They are even able to push a large boulder earlier deemed immovable by Roshi, surprising him. After eight months, Roshi brings them to Papaya Island to compete in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.

Upon arriving at the tournament, Goku reunites with Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar. He easily advances through the elimination rounds, surprising even himself with his newfound strength, and reaches the main competition. In the quarterfinals, Goku faces a beast named Giran. Trapped by Giran's Merry-Go-Round Gum, Goku’s tail regenerates, enabling him to break free and win, prompting Giran to forfeit out of fear. The semifinals pit Goku against Nam, with the fight moving into the air. Just before Nam nearly knocks Goku out with a Cross Arm Dive, Goku dodges and kicks Nam out of the ring.

In the finals, Goku battles defending champion Jackie Chun, who is secretly Master Roshi in disguise. During the match, Goku transforms into a Great Ape, wreaking havoc in the stadium. Unable to leave the arena, Jackie Chun destroys the moon, causing Goku to revert to normal. The match continues with both fighters rapidly tiring. Ultimately, Goku loses but learns the valuable lesson that there will always be stronger opponents and that constant training is essential.

Red Ribbon Army Saga
On their journey to find the final Dragon Ball, Goku and his friends stop in a town ruled by the Rabbit Mob. There, Goku teams up with Yamcha to defeat the gang's leader, Monster Carrot. Soon after, a robot piloted by Shu attacks and steals five Dragon Balls, but Goku keeps his four-star ball safe. They head to Pilaf's Castle to retrieve the stolen Dragon Balls, only to be trapped in a sleeping gas-filled room. Emperor Pilaf summons Shenron to wish for world domination, but Oolong disrupts the plan by wishing for a pair of panties instead. The group is then imprisoned in a cell set to fry them at sunrise. That night, Goku looks at the full moon and transforms into a Great Ape, destroying the cell and much of Pilaf's castle. Yamcha cuts off Goku’s tail to revert him to normal. Oolong begins to suspect Goku might be an alien. Declining an invitation to visit West City, Goku flies off on the Nimbus, excited to explore the world.

After finishing his quest for the Dragon Balls, Goku leaves Bulma and the others to train with Master Roshi. Roshi agrees to train Goku if he brings him a pretty girl. When Goku fails, Krillin arrives to train as well, and together they bring Launch, a girl with a split personality, to Roshi. On Roshi’s Training Island, they undergo strange exercises like delivering milk, construction work, swimming from sharks, and dodging bees—all while carrying heavy Turtle Shells. This grueling training transforms them into some of Earth’s strongest fighters. After eight months, they compete in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku quickly advances, defeating opponents such as the beast Giran and the fighter Nam. In the final match, he faces Jackie Chun (Master Roshi in disguise). During the fight, Goku transforms into a Great Ape and wreaks havoc until Jackie Chun destroys the moon to return him to normal. Exhausted, Goku loses but learns the importance of continual training.

Following the tournament, Roshi encourages Goku to explore the world. Early in his travels, Goku helps Nam restore water to his village by confronting Giran. Later, while skinny dipping in an oasis, a homeless boy steals Goku’s Dragon Radar and sells it to an antique shop. After retrieving it, Goku confronts Emperor Pilaf, who holds a fake four-star Dragon Ball. Pursuing the radar’s signal, Goku reunites with Chi-Chi, who has a wedding planned for them. Together, they return to the Ox-King’s Village only to find it attacked by the Red Ribbon Army. After driving off the troops, Goku chases the invaders into the desert and infiltrates Pilaf’s flying fortress during an attack. Following the fortress’s destruction, Goku awakens in a forest, befriends a monkey family, and battles Colonel Silver, who destroyed his Nimbus. Goku defeats Silver easily.

Realizing the Dragon Ball he retrieved isn’t the right one, Goku is flown by a Red Ribbon autopilot droid to the next location, but the plane crashes when the droid malfunctions. Frozen and immobile, Goku is rescued by a girl named Suno and taken to Jingle Village, where the Red Ribbon Army is also present. Goku infiltrates Muscle Tower, easily defeating soldiers and facing the android Major Metallitron, whom he defeats when its batteries run out. He then fights the Ninja Murasaki, humiliating him in battle. To counter Goku, the general releases Android 8, who befriends Goku due to his dislike of violence, helping him reach the top. General White orders his pet monster Buyon to attack, but Goku freezes and destroys it. After defeating General White, Goku rescues the village chief and recovers a hidden Dragon Ball.

Goku learns his Nimbus still functions and travels to West City to have Bulma repair his Dragon Radar. Bulma joins him with her Micro Band device. In the city, they reunite with Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar, and visit Dream Land theme park. They are stalked by Hasky, a thief working for the Red Ribbon Army. Goku catches her and retrieves his Dragon Balls.

Next, Goku, Bulma, and Krillin head underwater to find a Dragon Ball in a pirate cave. There, they face General Blue, the Red Ribbon Army’s top operative. Goku fights a pirate robot and a giant octopus named Octopapa while Krillin and Bulma battle Blue. Blue uses telekinesis to trap Goku, but a mouse distracts him, allowing Goku to escape with the Dragon Ball and his new friend. Back at Kame House, Blue captures the group with telekinesis, plants a bomb, and steals the Dragon Balls. Launch returns to free Goku, who disarms the bomb and chases Blue.

Goku pursues Blue to Gengoro Island and crashes in Penguin Village, where he meets Arale Norimaki and the Gatchans. Arale helps Goku search for Blue and introduces him to locals Taro and Akane. At Arale’s home, Senbei repairs Goku’s radar. Blue arrives, steals Senbei’s plane, and fights Goku again. Arale defeats Blue with ease, returning Goku’s Dragon Balls, though Blue steals the radar. Senbei’s son, Turbo, builds a new radar for Goku.

Goku travels to the Sacred Land of Korin, defeating Captain Yellow and retrieving his grandfather’s four-star Dragon Ball. There, he meets warrior Bora and his son Upa. The Red Ribbon Army hires assassin Mercenary Tao, who kills Bora. Goku battles Tao, narrowly surviving Tao’s Dodon Ray thanks to the Dragon Ball. Tao stays in a nearby town, and Goku climbs Korin Tower to retrieve the Sacred Water, a strength-enhancing item. After three days, Goku secures the water and drinks it, learning from Korin that the training was what made him stronger. When Tao returns, Goku defeats him by kicking back a grenade.

Motivated by Bora’s death, Goku vows to destroy the Red Ribbon Army and gather all the Dragon Balls to revive Bora. He attacks their headquarters, where Staff Officer Black kills Commander Red after learning his true ambition is merely to grow taller rather than conquer the world. Goku defeats Black, destroys the army, and collects six Dragon Balls. As he leaves, his friends arrive to assist, but Goku surprises them by declaring he already defeated the Red Ribbon Army.

Fortuneteller Baba Saga
After defeating the Red Ribbon Army, Goku still needs one final Dragon Ball to bring Bora back to life, but Bulma’s Dragon Radar fails to locate it. Master Roshi informs Goku about his older sister, Fortuneteller Baba, who can find anything. Goku, accompanied by Yamcha, Krillin, Upa, and Puar, visits Baba’s Palace. Baba demands they defeat her five strongest fighters before she will help. Goku’s friends handle the first two opponents, but Yamcha is defeated by the third, Bandages the Mummy. Goku then defeats Bandages and the fourth fighter, Spike the Devil Man, in a battle inside the Devil’s Toilet.

For the final match, Goku faces a familiar opponent who aggressively fights him, ripping off Goku’s tail during the battle. Goku eventually wins, and the fighter is revealed to be Grandpa Gohan, temporarily brought back from the Other World. Baba reveals that Emperor Pilaf possesses the missing Dragon Ball. Goku confronts Pilaf, who now pilots a robot combining Shu and Mai’s machines, and easily defeats him. With all seven Dragon Balls, Goku summons Shenron and wishes Bora back to life. After the wish, Goku retrieves the four-star Dragon Ball before the others disperse.

Preparing for the next World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku travels to train on Master Roshi’s advice. Along the way, he meets Chao and saves her village from bandits Terror and Plague. He later encounters Chin Taiken, master of the Chin-Star School, and defeats Sky Dragon of the Panther-Fang School to earn the title of Master of Martial Arts. In Demon Land, Goku rescues Princess Misa from Shula with help from Gola and Melee. He also pursues a monster named InoShikaCho, who is revealed to be working with Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu to scam villages. After Tien and Chiaotzu betray InoShikaCho, Goku saves him and, with Tanmen’s assistance, convinces the others that InoShikaCho is trustworthy. Three years later, Goku prepares to travel to Papaya Island but is delayed when his new friend Konkichi gets into trouble with a gang.

Tien Shinhan Saga
By the time the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament begins, Goku is 15 years old, though he still appears younger than ten. His toughest opponent is Tien Shinhan, a fighter trained by Master Shen, the Crane Hermit and rival of Master Roshi. Like Yamcha, Puar, and Oolong before them, Tien and his close friend Chiaotzu eventually join Goku’s side. In the preliminaries, Goku faces former champion King Chappa and defeats him easily. He then beats Pamput, a famous movie star, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Goku battles his best friend Krillin and wins after a hard-fought match.

In the final, Goku faces Tien and his Crane School techniques. During the fight, Chiaotzu uses telekinesis to repeatedly immobilize Goku under Master Shen’s orders. Once freed, the match resumes until Tien unleashes his Tri-Beam attack, destroying the stage. While both fall through the air, Goku uses a Kamehameha to propel himself into Tien’s stomach, knocking him out. Goku lands first after crashing into a van, making Tien the Tournament champion.

King Piccolo Saga
Immediately following the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, King Piccolo makes his appearance. Goku accidentally leaves behind his belongings, and when Krillin goes to retrieve them, he is killed by Tambourine, one of King Piccolo's mutated sons. Enraged, Goku pursues Tambourine through the skies but, weakened from the tournament, is defeated. His Flying Nimbus is destroyed during the battle. While recovering in the wilderness, Goku catches and eats a giant fish belonging to a samurai named Yajirobe, who possesses a Dragon Ball. Cymbal, another of Piccolo's sons, is sent to retrieve the Dragon Ball but is slain by Yajirobe.

Sensing Cymbal's death, King Piccolo orders Tambourine to find the killer. When Tambourine reappears, Goku finally destroys him. King Piccolo, feeling Tambourine's defeat, arrives at Yajirobe's Prairie, where he fights Goku. Though Goku manages to knock Piccolo down several times, Piccolo reveals he was holding back and swiftly defeats Goku using his Masenko attack, briefly stopping Goku's heart. Piccolo takes the Dragon Ball Yajirobe gave Goku. Yajirobe then takes Goku to Korin Tower to recover.

Meanwhile, Tien, Master Roshi, and Chiaotzu attempt to stop King Piccolo from collecting the Dragon Balls but fail, with Roshi and Chiaotzu dying in the process. King Piccolo summons Shenron and wishes for his youth to be restored, regaining his former power. He destroys Shenron and heads to King Furry's palace to attempt world domination.

Once healed, Goku embarks on a quest for the Ultra Divine Water, a sacred liquid that unlocks hidden powers or kills the unworthy. After surviving the water, he proceeds to King Furry's castle, where he confronts and defeats Drum, Piccolo’s newest son, injuring him severely. Goku challenges King Piccolo to a battle and gains the upper hand, even throwing Piccolo into the castle. Despite pushing his power to the limit at the cost of his lifespan, Piccolo cannot defeat Goku. Piccolo fires his Explosive Demon Wave, but Tien sacrifices himself by intercepting the attack, breaking Goku’s leg. Piccolo then takes Tien hostage, forcing Goku to surrender. Goku nearly continues the fight, hoping to revive Tien with the Dragon Balls, until Piccolo reveals he destroyed Shenron, leaving Goku at his mercy.

Goku suffers a broken arm and two broken legs from Piccolo’s attacks. As Piccolo prepares his final assault, Goku, fueled by rage over the loss of Krillin and Master Roshi, charges with his remaining arm and punches through Piccolo’s chest, killing him. Just before dying, Piccolo spits out an egg containing his reincarnation and final son, Piccolo Jr., who is destined to avenge him and spread evil.

Piccolo Jr. Saga
After defeating King Piccolo, Goku visits Korin Tower, where Korin explains about the Lookout and informs him that Kami, the creator of the Dragon Balls, might be able to restore Shenron. At Kami’s Lookout, Goku passes Mr. Popo’s speed test, and Kami, the Guardian of Earth, revives Shenron by restoring the Dragon Balls. Using them, Krillin, Chiaotzu, and Master Roshi are brought back to life. In return, Kami asks Goku to train with him and Mr. Popo for the upcoming 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament to face Piccolo Jr., King Piccolo’s vengeful son.

Goku’s training involves defeating Mr. Popo, who proves stronger than King Piccolo, and confronting a doll version of himself to overcome his own limitations. Through deep meditation and enduring intense challenges—being still like a rock but faster than lightning—Goku undergoes the toughest training of his life. During this period, Kami permanently removes Goku’s tail for the third and final time and wishes for the moon’s return. Goku also trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber but cannot stay longer than a month due to its severity.

Three years later, now 18 or possibly 19 years old after the Time Chamber training, Goku returns to join the tournament. He has matured into a young man unrecognized by many. In the preliminaries, Goku faces King Chappa again, who seeks revenge but is defeated once more. In the quarterfinals, Goku battles an unknown female fighter familiar with Master Roshi’s style. After winning, the fighter reveals herself as Chi-Chi, to whom Goku had unknowingly promised marriage years earlier, mistaking marriage for food. Goku asks for her hand before leaving the ring.

In the semifinals, Goku faces Tien Shinhan to settle their previous rivalry. The match is close until Goku removes his weighted clothing, gaining speed and victory. This sets up the final round against Piccolo Jr. Before the battle, Piccolo traps Kami inside a bottle using the Evil Containment Wave and swallows it, preventing Goku from killing Piccolo without harming Kami.

The fight intensifies, and upon learning Piccolo Jr. is King Piccolo’s son, the crowd flees. Goku tricks Piccolo Jr. into transforming into his Giant form and flies into his mouth to retrieve the bottle containing Kami. The battle continues destructively. Goku uses the Meteor Combination rush to nearly knock Piccolo out, but Piccolo injures Goku’s shoulder, severely weakening him. Piccolo disables Goku’s limbs, leaving one arm free to kill him with, vowing not to repeat his father’s mistake. As Goku nears defeat, he discovers how to fly, evades an attack, and finishes Piccolo with a full-force headbutt that knocks him out of the ring, securing Goku’s first and only tournament win. Afterward, Goku gives Piccolo Jr. a Senzu Bean to save Kami and establish a lasting rivalry.

Following his victory, Goku and Chi-Chi travel to the Ox-King’s Village to prepare their wedding. When the castle catches fire, trapping the Ox-King, they search for the Bancho Fan Master Roshi once discarded to extinguish the flames. Along the way, Goku battles and defeats Annin, a guardian between the living world and the Other World. With the fan, they successfully put out the fire. Goku and Chi-Chi marry, concluding the original Dragon Ball series.

Interlude
When Gohan was born, Goku, Chi-Chi, and the Ox-King struggled to choose a name for him. Unable to decide, Goku went fishing but was scolded by Chi-Chi, who asked if Grandpa Gohan had taught him any manners. At that moment, the baby laughed, and they chose to name him after Goku’s adoptive grandfather in his honor.

Saiyan Saga
At the start of Dragon Ball Z, Goku is 24 years old, living with his wife Chi-Chi and their four-year-old son Gohan in a new house near Mount Paozu. After saving Gohan from falling down a waterfall, Goku visits Kame House to introduce him to Bulma, Master Roshi, and Krillin. Suddenly, Goku senses a powerful presence nearby—his older brother Raditz arrives from space. Raditz reveals Goku’s Saiyan heritage and that Goku was sent to Earth to destroy its inhabitants but lost memory of this mission due to a childhood head injury. When Goku refuses to fulfill the mission, Raditz kidnaps Gohan and demands Goku kill one hundred humans in 24 hours or Gohan will be killed.

Krillin and Master Roshi offer to help fight Raditz, but Goku declines to protect their lives, as they cannot be revived again. Piccolo, who overheard Raditz, joins forces with Goku. Together they confront Raditz, but even combined, they struggle. Gohan unleashes his hidden power to weaken Raditz, enabling Goku and Piccolo to plan a final attack. Goku sacrifices himself by holding Raditz in place while Piccolo uses the Special Beam Cannon to kill Raditz, killing Goku in the process. Before dying, Raditz warns that two stronger Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, will arrive on Earth in one year.

After death, King Yemma sends Goku along Snake Way to train with King Kai. Along the way, Goku encounters Princess Snake and narrowly escapes Hell. On King Kai’s planet, Goku mistakes King Kai’s monkey Bubbles for the king and completes several humorous challenges before beginning intense training under King Kai’s gravity, learning new techniques and greatly increasing his power. Meanwhile, Goku’s friends on Earth use the Dragon Balls to bring him back to life. However, due to King Kai’s miscalculation of travel time, Goku still must journey back down Snake Way, which will take about two days.

By the time Goku returns, the battle against the Saiyans has turned dire. Yamcha was killed by a Saibaman, Chiaotzu self-destructed attempting to kill Nappa, Tien Shinhan died using his last strength in a Spirit Tri-Beam, and Piccolo sacrificed himself to protect Gohan, which also caused Kami’s death. Goku arrives riding the Nimbus, saves Gohan from Nappa, and, enraged by the deaths, powers up impressively. He quickly defeats Nappa by absorbing the Break Cannon attack and dodging the rest of his assaults. Vegeta orders Nappa to retreat but then targets Gohan and Krillin; Goku defeats Nappa with a Kaio-ken Finish before Vegeta kills him.

Knowing Vegeta is next, Goku asks to fight him in isolation. Vegeta attempts to convince Goku to join him, but Goku refuses, loyal to Earth. Their battle is intense and even, with Vegeta gaining the upper hand. Goku powers up to Kaio-ken times three, briefly overwhelming Vegeta. In response, Vegeta transforms into a Great Ape using a Power Ball, recalling that Goku’s earlier Great Ape form killed his grandfather, for which Goku apologizes. The fight continues, and Goku ultimately defeats Vegeta using Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb techniques, aided by Krillin, Gohan, and Yajirobe. Vegeta is spared when Goku convinces Krillin not to kill him, hoping Vegeta will change.

Goku suffers severe injuries, including broken legs, and must remain in Wukong Hospital with Chi-Chi. Meanwhile, Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma leave for Namek to find the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive their fallen friends.

Frieza Saga
After several weeks in the hospital, Goku learns from Master Roshi that Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma are in trouble on Planet Namek. Vegeta has fully recovered, and the Frieza Force, led by the universe’s strongest being, Frieza, poses a grave threat. Yajirobe arrives with a fresh supply of Senzu Beans, healing Goku completely. Using Dr. Brief’s newly built spaceship—constructed from Goku’s original Attack Ball—Goku begins his six-day journey to Namek. During the trip, he trains under increasing artificial gravity, starting at 20 times Earth’s gravity and reaching 100 times. King Kai warns him to avoid Frieza, deeming him too powerful to face.

Upon arriving, Goku senses the presence of Frieza and Captain Ginyu and quickly joins an ongoing battle. He rescues Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta, who are under attack by Recoome of the elite Ginyu Force. After healing them with Senzu Beans, Goku swiftly defeats Recoome with a single elbow and takes on Burter and Jeice together. Goku tricks them into believing his power level is only 5,000 by only raising his power when attacking or defending. He then defeats Burter but is caught off guard by Captain Ginyu, who can switch bodies with others. After a brief fight, Ginyu, critically injured, swaps bodies with Goku but struggles to control it. Vegeta takes advantage and seriously injures Goku’s body. Goku regains his body by intercepting a beam intended to swap bodies with Vegeta.

Goku’s battered body is healed over several hours by a medical machine aboard Frieza’s ship. Once recovered, Goku returns to battle, arriving as Vegeta faces defeat against Frieza. After hearing Vegeta’s emotional farewell and learning of Frieza’s cruelty to Saiyans and Namekians, Goku vows to defeat Frieza. The battle begins evenly, but Frieza gains the advantage by powering up to 50% of his full strength. Goku grows frustrated and fearful of Frieza’s power. Despite Frieza handicapping himself, Goku cannot surpass him.

Using Kaio-ken times 20 combined with a Kamehameha, Goku’s attack fails, and Frieza overwhelms him. Remembering the Spirit Bomb, Goku begins gathering energy, leaving himself vulnerable. Piccolo (recently resurrected and on Namek), Gohan, and Krillin try to distract Frieza. The Spirit Bomb strikes Frieza, seemingly destroying him and a large portion of Namek in a massive explosion. Goku and his friends laugh, believing Frieza defeated. However, Frieza survives. When Frieza kills Krillin and critically injures Piccolo, Goku’s anger triggers his transformation into a Super Saiyan.

Goku instructs Gohan to escape Namek with Piccolo and Bulma, then resumes fighting Frieza. Initially, Goku dominates with his new power but taunts Frieza into reaching 100% power. Frieza, damaged from his previous form, cannot sustain full power for long. Although Frieza seems to overpower Goku at first, Goku reveals he was holding back. As Frieza tires, his power drops sharply. Goku declares the fight pointless and flies away, sparing Frieza’s life.

In desperation, Frieza uses his Death Saucer attack, throwing two pink Destructo Discs at Goku. Goku dodges and maneuvers so Frieza is between him and the discs. Frieza is cut in half, losing limbs, and pleads for help. Goku, showing mercy but unwilling to forgive, gives Frieza some energy. Frieza uses this to fire a powerful blast at Goku, who counters with an Angry Kamehameha, finally defeating Frieza.

Goku then boards Frieza’s ship and attempts to activate it, but the controls fail. The ship crashes into lava below.

Frieza-Androids Interlude
During the Frieza-Androids Interlude, Goku panics as Namek begins to explode but manages to spot a Ginyu Force space pod nearby and escapes just in time. The pod carries him to Planet Yardrat, which was the Ginyu Force’s next intended target. Meanwhile, Goku’s friends, who were teleported back to Earth by a wish using the Namekian Dragon Balls, believe Goku to be dead.

Months later, when his friends attempt to revive Goku and Krillin by warping them to the check-in station, they discover that Goku is still alive. They offer to bring him back to Earth, but Goku declines, saying he will return on his own time. During his stay on Yardrat, Goku learns a new technique called Instant Transmission.

Future Trunks tests Goku's might
Two years after his time on Yardrat, Goku returns to Earth and is immediately confronted by Trunks, the half-Saiyan son of Vegeta and Bulma from the future. Trunks had just killed Mecha-Frieza and King Cold shortly before Goku's arrival. To test Goku's Super Saiyan strength, Trunks attacks him fiercely with his sword, which Goku deflects effortlessly with one energy-charged finger, stating he expected Trunks not to use his full power.

Trunks then gives Goku medicine for a heart virus that Goku is destined to contract within the next one or two years, advising him to take it when symptoms appear. He also warns of two androids that will threaten Earth in three years. Following this, Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo dedicate the next three years to training for the impending threat.

However, Future Trunks’ visit delays the onset of the heart virus, which does not manifest during those three years and only appears about six months before the androids arrive. Since Goku experiences no symptoms during this period, he stops taking the medicine.

Androids Saga
Three years later, two androids, Dr. Gero (Android 20) and Android 19, attack a city. The Z Fighters confront them, and Yamcha is the first to be attacked—impaled by Dr. Gero’s hand and having his energy drained. He is saved with a Senzu Bean, and the Z Fighters lure the androids away from the city to fight.

Despite being a Super Saiyan, Goku is overwhelmed by Android 19 as his heart virus begins to manifest, drastically weakening him during the battle. Vegeta, now also a Super Saiyan, arrives, saves Goku, and easily destroys Android 19 while enjoying the fight. Yamcha takes Goku to Chi-Chi to receive the medicine that can save him from the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, the other Z Fighters learn from Trunks, who returns to aid them, that the timeline has changed. The androids they face are different from those in Trunks’ future—his Androids 17 and 18 do not match these. Dr. Gero announces his plan to release Androids 17 and 18 and flees the battle.

Despite attempts to stop him, Dr. Gero activates Androids 17 and 18, who immediately rebel and kill him. They also activate Android 16, a purely mechanical android created solely to assassinate Goku.

Cell Saga
While the Z Fighters fail to stop the androids, Piccolo (recently fused with Kami) discovers Cell, a bio-engineered being created by Dr. Gero using DNA from Goku, his allies, and past foes. Cell’s goal is to absorb Androids 17 and 18 to reach his perfect form, kill Goku, and dominate the universe. Cell absorbs Android 17, evolving into his second form.

Goku recovers from his illness and trains with Gohan, Vegeta, and Future Trunks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, gaining a year’s worth of training in a day under extreme conditions. Vegeta and Trunks enter first, followed by Goku and Gohan. Goku helps Gohan achieve Super Saiyan, noting Gohan’s immense potential and that Gohan might surpass him.

Cell prepares to finish off Tien after Tien helps Android 18 escape, but Goku intervenes using Instant Transmission. Goku confronts Cell, promising to defeat him in the future. Cell tries to attack, but Goku teleports Tien and Piccolo to safety and gives them Senzu Beans to heal. Vegeta and Trunks set out to find and fight Cell.

After training, Goku reaches Super Saiyan Third Grade but explains its drawbacks, opting to master regular Super Saiyan. Cell absorbs Android 18, reaching his perfect form. Vegeta and Trunks challenge Cell but are defeated due to flaws in their forms and Cell’s power. Cell announces the Cell Games, a tournament to challenge Earth's fighters in ten days.

During this time, Goku visits New Namek to ask Dende to become Earth’s new Guardian, restoring the Dragon Balls, which Piccolo and Kami’s fusion rendered unusable. Goku and the others train and maintain their Super Saiyan forms in preparation.

At the Cell Games, after Mr. Satan is easily defeated, Goku fights Cell first. The battle is intense but Goku cannot gain the upper hand against a restrained Perfect Cell. Even after using Instant Kamehameha, which destroys Cell’s upper half, Cell regenerates. Exhausted, Goku yields to Gohan, believing his son holds the power to win.

Gohan, initially reluctant, powers up to a level surpassing Goku’s full strength, fighting Cell but holding back. When Cell’s children, the Cell Jrs, attack Gohan’s friends, Gohan’s anger triggers his transformation into Super Saiyan 2, greatly surpassing Cell’s power. Gohan defeats Cell despite the villain’s Full Power and Power Weighted forms, forcing Cell to expel Android 18.

Cell attempts to destroy Earth via self-destruction, but Goku uses Instant Transmission to teleport Cell and himself to King Kai’s planet. The resulting explosion kills Goku, King Kai, and his companions Bubbles and Gregory. Cell unexpectedly regenerates into Super Perfect Cell and returns to Earth.

From the Other World, Goku encourages Gohan, helping him power his Kamehameha. Gohan’s attack ultimately destroys Super Perfect Cell. After the victory, Goku decides to remain dead, believing his presence attracts dangerous enemies, and trusts Gohan to protect Earth.

Great Saiyaman Saga
During a filler arc exclusive to the anime, after the battle with Cell leaves King Kai without a planet, Goku travels along Snake Way with King Kai and his companions Bubbles and Gregory. King Kai urges Goku to visit the Grand Kai’s Planet to compete in the Other World Tournament, where the victor will receive personal training from Grand Kai.

Upon arrival, Goku encounters King Kai’s rival, the West Kai, and his strongest fighter, Pikkon. Grand Kai tasks Pikkon with journeying to Hell to stop Cell, Frieza, King Cold, and the Ginyu Force from wreaking havoc. Goku joins Pikkon in the mission, defeating the Ginyu Force himself and watching in amazement as Pikkon effortlessly defeats Cell, Frieza, and King Cold.

Returning to King Kai’s realm, Goku is greeted by legendary warriors like Olibu, a former hero of Earth. Throughout the Tournament, Goku overcomes opponents including Caterpy of the South Kai, Arqua of the East Kai, and Maraikoh of the West Kai. In the final round, Goku faces Pikkon, but both are disqualified on a technicality. The Grand Kai nonetheless permits them both to train under him.

Over the next seven years in the Other World, Goku attains Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 forms. The latter significantly amplifies his power beyond Super Saiyan 2 but causes intense strain and heavy energy consumption.

Goku also receives special clearance to return to Earth for a single day to enter the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. He reunites with his younger son Goten, born after his death during the Cell Games, and meets Videl, Gohan’s high school girlfriend and daughter of Mr. Satan, the false hero credited with saving the world from Cell.

World Tournament Saga
Goku was scheduled to face Vegeta in the 6th match of the tournament, finally settling their long-standing rivalry. However, the match was postponed after Videl was severely beaten by Spopovich, a seemingly weak fighter who, along with Yamu, was controlled by the evil wizard Babidi. During the tournament, Spopovich and Yamu stole Gohan’s Super Saiyan 2 energy and fled, prompting all the Z Fighters participating to abandon the tournament to pursue them.

Shin and Kibito, attendants of the Supreme Kai, introduced themselves to the Z Fighters and explained Babidi’s plan to unleash destruction across the universe by resurrecting his monstrous puppet, Majin Buu. The group follows Spopovich to Babidi’s spaceship, where they are ambushed by Dabura, ruler of the Demon Realm, who kills Kibito and turns Krillin and Piccolo to stone. Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Shin enter the ship, defeating Babidi’s minions room by room, impressing Shin with their power.

Goku fights Yakon, who absorbs his energy, but ultimately defeats him by overwhelming and destroying him. Meanwhile, Gohan battles Dabura, and Vegeta complains he could perform better. Babidi uses this opportunity to possess Vegeta, exploiting the evil in his heart and transforming him into Majin Vegeta, restoring his villainous nature.

They return to the tournament, where Majin Vegeta destroys part of the stadium, causing numerous casualties to force Goku into battle. Reluctantly, Goku accepts, and both fighters are transported to a deserted battlefield to settle their fight. Meanwhile, Gohan and Shin continue their mission to stop Babidi.

The intense battle between Goku and Majin Vegeta generates enough energy to awaken Majin Buu. Both fighters appear evenly matched at Super Saiyan 2 level. Goku is unsurprised that Vegeta has pushed his limits through training during his seven years away. However, Goku is horrified when Vegeta admits to allowing Babidi to control him in order to reawaken his darker side and defeat Goku. Goku condemns Vegeta for using this as justification to betray his family and loved ones.

Majin Buu Saga
The battle between Goku and Vegeta abruptly ends when Goku senses Majin Buu's release and urges Vegeta to help defeat him. Vegeta refuses, even after being warned that Buu will kill his family. Goku punches Vegeta for bluffing, but Vegeta knocks Goku out from behind while he reaches for a Senzu Bean. Vegeta then consumes the last Senzu Bean and flies off to face Majin Buu alone.

Upon waking, Goku senses neither Vegeta nor Gohan and assumes they were killed in battle. In reality, Gohan was saved by the injured Supreme Kai, while Vegeta died trying to destroy Buu. At Kami's Lookout, Dende heals Goku and confirms Vegeta’s sacrifice. Goku transports everyone there and delivers the news. With limited time on Earth, Goku and Piccolo teach Trunks and Goten the Fusion Dance—learned from the Metamorans in Other World—to create a powerful warrior against Buu.

Learning the Dragon Radar is still in West City and at risk from Buu’s destruction, Goku distracts Buu while Trunks retrieves the radar. Goku confronts Buu and reveals his new Super Saiyan 3 form, whose energy reaches Supreme Kai's planet. Their fight is intense and evenly matched, with Buu enjoying the battle and nearly destroying a tenth of the Earth. Goku admits he could have won but wants to give Gohan, Trunks, and Goten a chance to save the universe. Maintaining Super Saiyan 3 drains Goku’s energy, forcing his return to Other World.

Back in Other World, Goku learns Gohan is alive, training with Shin on the Kai Planet. Gohan tests the Z Sword’s strength but breaks it, releasing Old Kai, who offers to unlock Gohan’s full potential through a ritual.

Watching through a Crystal Ball, Goku observes Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks battling Super Buu. Gotenks defuses mid-fight, allowing Super Buu to absorb him and Piccolo, gaining the upper hand. Gohan, empowered by Old Kai’s ritual, fights Super Buu but fails when absorbed. Old Kai sacrifices himself to revive Goku so he can help.

Goku receives Potara Earrings to fuse with Gohan, creating a warrior capable of defeating Buu without transformations. Upon arrival, Goku cuts Super Buu in half and tosses Gohan an earring. Gohan misses, so Goku stalls Buu as Super Saiyan 3. After Gotenks defuses inside Buu, weakening him, Gohan is absorbed. Vegeta, resurrected, appears; Goku asks him to fuse, but Vegeta initially refuses. After a brief fight, Goku convinces Vegeta to set aside differences for Earth’s sake.

The two fuse into Vegito, who overwhelms Super Buu. Despite numerous attacks, Vegito dodges effortlessly and defeats Buu. However, Vegito is absorbed intentionally to rescue the others trapped inside Buu.

Inside Buu’s body, Vegito splits back into Goku and Vegeta due to Buu’s digestive system. Goku fights painful enzymes and escapes with Vegeta after freeing the captured fighters. Vegeta removes fat Majin Buu from Super Buu, triggering a transformation back to Kid Buu.

Outside, Goku rescues Mr. Satan, Bee, and Dende but fails to save the others before Kid Buu destroys Earth. Kibito Kai teleports the survivors to the Sacred World of the Kai. Kid Buu follows, teleporting to confront Goku and Vegeta.

Goku and Vegeta play Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide who fights first; Goku wins. He starts as Super Saiyan 2 and eventually transforms to Super Saiyan 3, matching Kid Buu for a time but becoming exhausted due to energy drain. Vegeta distracts Kid Buu as Goku gathers energy for a Super Spirit Bomb, inviting Earth’s inhabitants to contribute.

Initially hesitant, Earth’s people are convinced by Mr. Satan to give energy. Fat Majin Buu fights Kid Buu but falls, leaving Vegeta to guard Goku. Kid Buu surprisingly halts the Spirit Bomb and pushes it back. Vegeta realizes Goku has exhausted his power.

Using the last wish from the Namekian Dragon Balls—after restoring Earth and reviving victims of Babidi’s arrival—Dende restores Goku’s full power. Goku powers up the Spirit Bomb, transforms into Super Saiyan, and reverses Kid Buu’s push. Goku reflects on past events and wishes Kid Buu be reborn good to fight again someday. With Earth’s support, Goku destroys Kid Buu.

After Dende heals Goku and Vegeta, they find Majin Buu still alive. Vegeta tries to finish him, but Goku persuades him to spare Buu. They return to Earth and reunite with their families, with Goku announcing his resurrection.

Six months after Kid Buu’s defeat, Goku summons Shenron to erase Majin Buu from everyone’s memories. Later, he arrives late to Bulma’s party, delayed by watching over dinosaur eggs.

God of Destruction Beerus Saga
Four years after Kid Buu's defeat, Goku works as a farmer to earn money at Chi-Chi's request. While training in Super Saiyan, he distracts Goten, who falls off a mountainside. Goku saves him and the tractor using Instant Transmission, explaining the need to train in case a stronger enemy appears.

Later, Mr. Satan offers Goku 100 million zeni as thanks for defeating Buu. Initially confused by the amount, Goku declines and suggests giving it to Vegeta. After persuasion from Mr. Satan and Goten, and a talk with Chi-Chi, Goku accepts and begins training on King Kai's Planet under ten times Earth’s gravity.

Upon arrival, Goku accidentally crashes into King Kai’s house. While King Kai rebuilds it, Goku explains his training purpose. King Kai regards Goku as an important figure and friend. Goku changes into a blue and white tracksuit and starts training.

Goku overhears King Kai, Old Kai, and Kibito Kai discussing him and Beerus, the God of Destruction. To distract him, King Kai talks about being responsible for Goku's death. Goku grows nervous about missing Bulma’s birthday party and notices King Kai acting strange.

King Kai urges Goku to attend Bulma's party to avoid losing friends, but Goku refuses. After Goku fires a Kamehameha that destroys part of King Kai’s house again, King Kai reveals Beerus’s role in the universe. Sensing Beerus’s approach, King Kai advises Goku to stay hidden.

Beerus finds Goku and asks if he knows about the Super Saiyan God. Goku denies and claims to have defeated Frieza as a Super Saiyan. Beerus doubts this without transformation and agrees to fight Goku.

Goku transforms into Super Saiyan and attacks, but Beerus shows no effort, growing bored. Surprised by Goku’s Super Saiyan 2 form, Beerus continues dodging. Goku requests Beerus to fight back, but Beerus only attacks if Goku shows more power. Despite this, Beerus dodges while Goku lands punches, damaging King Kai’s planet.

Transforming to Super Saiyan 3, Goku lands some hits and fires a Kamehameha blocked by Beerus’s finger. Intimidated, Goku notices Beerus lets him land hits intentionally. A final Kamehameha misses and destroys part of King Kai’s planet. Beerus defeats Goku easily and departs to Earth. Lying wounded, Goku reflects on Beerus’s Super Saiyan God remarks and considers fusion with Vegeta, doubting it would suffice.

King Kai heals Goku with a Senzu Bean. Goku wants to attend Bulma’s party but is prevented by King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles, so he stays training.

After the Z Fighters’ battles with Beerus, the God threatens to destroy Earth. Goku intervenes, asking for time to summon the Super Saiyan God. Beerus allows it, and Goku summons Shenron, who explains the ritual: six righteous Saiyans must channel their power into one to create the Super Saiyan God.

Goku, Vegeta, Goten, Trunks, and Gohan attempt the ritual but only increase Goku’s power. Whis notes the need for six righteous Saiyans. Videl, announcing her pregnancy, joins. The ritual is reattempted, and Goku becomes the Super Saiyan God.

In the anime, Goku and Beerus ascend to the sky. Goku struggles to control his new power but gradually adapts. He fires a Kamehameha that Beerus easily evades. Beerus attacks, demonstrating the power gap, but Goku manages to grab Beerus’s fist, showing improved perception.

Beerus compliments Goku, launching an energy ball that Goku deflects. Goku lands a punch that aggravates Beerus, who retaliates but is surprised when Goku evades and counters with a forehead flick and neck chops, mimicking their fight on King Kai’s planet. Beerus remarks he did not expect Goku to hold a grudge and announces an ongoing battle between gods.

Using the Afterimage Technique, Goku strikes Beerus’s abdomen. Their fight intensifies with rapid punches. Beerus compresses a Sphere of Destruction blast and fires it; the gods exchange attacks, and Goku notices Beerus isn’t using full power.

Blasted several times, Goku lands on an island and is pummeled until he headbutts and punches Beerus, launching into the stratosphere, where he is hit repeatedly.

Immobilized, Goku is motivated by Beerus to use full power. Beerus creates an atomic bomb, kicking it toward Earth. Goku counters with a one-handed Kamehameha, prompting Beerus to fire multiple bombs. Goku powers up to blast them all but is impaled by Beerus, who doubts Goku is the right warrior.

Falling into the ocean, Goku heals using Super Saiyan God power and returns to the stratosphere, eager to continue.

After Beerus fails to chop Goku’s neck, they agree not to use "cheap tricks" and clash ki fists, creating shockwaves threatening the universe. Kibito Kai contacts Goku to stop, but they continue until their attacks cancel each other out.

Beerus fires an Atomic Bomb; Goku returns a Kamehameha. The blasts collide, and Goku pushes past limits using Super Saiyan God power. Beerus nullifies Goku’s ki exertion at 100% power. Their exchange continues as Goku’s power increases.

Eventually, Goku’s Super Saiyan God form expires but he retains the power and reverts to Super Saiyan, still landing hits on Beerus.

In the anime, their fight reaches Earth. Goku struggles to keep up despite godly power. Beerus holds out his hand; Goku charges and punches, lifting them to the stratosphere. Goku’s Super Saiyan form fades; Beerus flicks him, ending the fight.

Falling, Goku thinks of family and friends, fueling his power. He fires a fully powered Kamehameha; Beerus throws an atom-like blast, creating a Sphere of Destruction. Goku punches and destroys it, falling toward Earth, caught by Vegeta.

Goku tries to convince Beerus not to destroy Earth. As Beerus fires at Bulma’s ship, he misses, falling asleep. Whis departs with Beerus, thanking Goku for entertaining him.

Goku enjoys a large meal and learns Gohan is becoming a father. Goten asks about becoming a god; Goku says he hasn’t and dislikes the idea. He tells Vegeta he will become the next Super Saiyan God, but Vegeta claims he will surpass Goku, Beerus, and the Super Saiyan God. Goku mocks Vegeta's "My Bulmaaa" moment. Piccolo notes Goku was watching fights by teleporting to Earth, and Goku admits he couldn’t think of anything else to do.

Golden Frieza Saga
Goku continues to farm to support his family, as Chi-Chi has already spent the 100 million zeni. While working, he struggles with a broken tractor and tries to get it fixed by Bulma, but she’s not home. Passing through Satan City, Goku sees Mr. Satan about to fight Galbee. Nervous, Mr. Satan volunteers Goku as a substitute. Before the match can happen, Goku notices Chi-Chi and Piccolo nearby and quickly leaves.

That night, Goku returns home, hungry but hesitant to go inside, worried about Chi-Chi's reaction. While he's still farming, Krillin visits, curious about Goku's progress and asks to be punched to gauge Goku's strength. Goku obliges, but the punch sends Krillin flying through buildings and into a boulder. Goku retrieves him and brings him to get medical treatment from Android 18.

Feeling he’s fallen behind, Goku resumes training in secret whenever no one is around. Six months later, Pan is born. Chi-Chi disapproves of raising her to be a fighter, so Goten brings Goku to help convince her to meet with Gohan and Mr. Satan. When Bulma arrives, she mentions Vegeta is training with Whis on Beerus’s planet. Excited, Goku crashes through Gohan’s library to ask when Whis will return, and Bulma says it could be a month or two.

Impatient, Goku constantly interrupts Bulma’s daily activities until she gives him a communicator to contact her when Whis returns. Eventually, Bulma calls Goku to inform him that Whis is back. Goku rushes to Capsule Corporation, pestering Whis to finish eating so they can leave. Just before departing, Chi-Chi arrives to scold him, prompting Goku to flee with Whis to avoid trouble.

Upon arriving at Beerus’s planet, Goku is glad to see Vegeta and notes his improvement. The two are tasked with chores, including changing Beerus’s sheets. In the process, Goku accidentally disturbs Beerus and is attacked repeatedly, even caught in a leg lock. Despite the danger, he manages to lift Beerus so Vegeta can finish the task.

After finishing chores around the planet, Goku and Vegeta begin training with Whis. Whis gives Goku a new gi and weighted gear for training. Later that night, Goku admits to Vegeta that he doesn’t enjoy chores but wants to keep training. The next day, while sparring with Whis, both are easily stopped due to their lack of speed. Whis critiques them, noting Goku's overly calm approach in battle could lead to failure.

When Frieza is resurrected, Goku senses an unfamiliar power from Earth but is told by Vegeta to ignore it. During training, the two briefly unlock a new power-up. They later inform Beerus that they’re there only to become stronger. As Goku and Vegeta resume training, Beerus suggests sending them to "that place" to improve faster.

In this realm—similar to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber but infused with divine ki and lacking any visible exit—Goku and Vegeta struggle to move. Vegeta realizes they must stop leaking their ki to adapt. While sparring, Whis pulls them out to retrieve pizza for Beerus, only to find it already eaten. Furious, Beerus chases them.

Whis later sees Bulma's message about Frieza’s return, but it would take 35 minutes to travel back. Goku can’t sense anyone’s ki on Earth to teleport until Gohan powers up. Goku and Vegeta teleport just in time—Goku blocks a blast aimed at Gohan and congratulates him. He retrieves Piccolo's body, promising to revive him with the Namekian Dragon Balls.

Frieza exits his hover pod and powers up. Goku insists on fighting first since Vegeta already eliminated Ginyu. Frieza expects Goku to transform, but Goku holds back initially. Their fight begins with a fierce power clash, but Frieza resorts to dirty tricks, targeting Krillin and Bulma. Goku saves Krillin, but while saving Bulma, he’s caught off guard and knocked down.

Later, Vegeta interrupts their battle with a kick. Frieza tries to convince Vegeta to stand aside so he can finish Goku. Goku then reveals his transformation—Super Saiyan Blue—and explains it’s a Super Saiyan imbued with godly power. Frieza transforms into Golden Frieza, and their real battle begins. They exchange energy blasts, culminating in an explosive clash.

Frieza briefly gains the upper hand, surprising Goku with how fast he closed the power gap. With Beerus watching, Frieza overwhelms Goku, who continues fighting despite injuries. Goku bites Frieza’s tail in desperation, but is knocked down again. Vegeta wants to take over, but Goku insists he’s close to winning. He warns Frieza of his form's instability.

Eventually, Goku recovers and lands a strong counterattack, revealing Frieza’s fatal flaw—his body can’t maintain the Golden form for long. Frieza tries to continue, but Goku catches his punch and throws him back. Just then, Sorbet shoots Goku with a laser while he's distracted, gravely injuring him. Frieza prepares to kill him, but Vegeta arrives and deflects the attack.

Goku thanks Vegeta and tells everyone Vegeta has also achieved Super Saiyan Blue through his own efforts. Frieza destroys Earth in a last-ditch effort, killing everyone except those protected by Whis. Goku regrets not ending the fight sooner. Whis uses his Temporal Do-Over to rewind time, giving Goku a second chance. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue and obliterates Frieza with a Dash Kamehameha before he can destroy Earth.

Vegeta scolds Goku for interfering, but Goku explains he had no choice. Bulma and others vouch for him. Goku later visits the Lookout, picks up Goten and Trunks, and gathers the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive Piccolo. Afterward, he explains the events to Piccolo and laughs at Trunks' comment about cutting Frieza in half—recalling Future Trunks' deed. Goku then enjoys Bulma’s feast and talks to Vegeta about teaming up next time, but Vegeta refuses—and, to everyone’s surprise, Goku agrees.

Universe 6 Saga
Sometime later, Goku is sparring (doing finger-ups in the anime) with Vegeta on Beerus' planet under Whis’ supervision. The two fight evenly until Vegeta, irritated, transforms into Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and lands a ki blast on Goku. Goku reminds him that form was supposed to be off-limits, then uses it himself. While they argue, Goku struggles to say the name repeatedly, biting his tongue in the process. He asks for a new name, prompting Whis to suggest “Super Saiyan Blue.” As punishment for using the form, Whis makes them wear heavy training suits.

Suddenly, Champa and Vados arrive on Beerus' planet. Goku notices they resemble Beerus and Whis, and Vados reveals she’s Whis’ sister and that Champa is Beerus’ twin. When Beerus shows up, they discuss Universe 6’s Earth, which was destroyed by war. Champa proposes a 5-on-5 Tournament of Destroyers with Universe 7’s Earth as the prize, exciting Goku.

Whis explains why the two Gods of Destruction won’t fight directly, and the details of the tournament are agreed upon: standard Tenkaichi Budokai rules, to be held on the Nameless Planet in five Earth days. Goku and Vegeta immediately join the team. Piccolo and Buu are selected next, and Beerus insists on including the strongest fighter he’s faced (excluding Whis). Vegeta suggests Gohan due to his potential, but Goku explains that Gohan is busy with his studies. Goku and Vegeta return to Earth to ask Bulma to build a new Dragon Radar to find the final Super Dragon Ball.

Goku tests Bulma’s radar but it fails, so she calls her sister Tights, who contacts Jaco to help. Goku offers to train alone in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but Vegeta joins him when Goku says training together will push them both. Piccolo declines to join. Inside the Time Chamber, Goku wonders if Universe 6’s fighters will be strong; Vegeta assures him they will. They both train as Super Saiyan Blue for three years (three days in real time).

On tournament day, Goku and Vegeta emerge bearded from the chamber. When Whis arrives with his transport cube, Goku asks about Gohan—Videl explains he’s at an important conference. Goku meets Monaka and jokes about his name, which means “nipples.” Onboard, they all play Shiritori. Whis mentions a “Juri-Juri,” prompting Goku to ask what it is—Whis explains it’s a bird from his planet.

Arriving on the Nameless Planet, Goku marvels at the size of the Super Dragon Balls. He sees Shin and Kibito and is surprised they’re no longer fused. He greets the Universe 6 Supreme Kai and his attendant, then prepares for a written exam. On his way to the testing area, Goku spots a fighter resembling Frieza—Vegeta identifies him as not being Frieza, and Goku notices Magetta, whom he mistakes for a human. Goku then meets Cabba, who reveals he’s a Saiyan from Universe 6, shocking both Goku and Vegeta. Cabba explains their Saiyan race lost their tails through evolution.

Goku barely passes the written exam with 50%, but Buu fails, leaving the team short a fighter. Goku blames Vegeta for suggesting the exam. Goku takes the first match against Botamo, who charges at him. Goku dodges while trying to “exercise off” his meal. After tiring Botamo out, Goku grabs him and tosses him from the ring for a ring-out victory.

Goku eyes Hit, who seems disinterested. His next match is against Frost. After a brief handshake, they clash at high speed. Goku lands a few solid hits, encouraging Frost to transform. Frost pretends to be surprised that Goku knows he can transform, and then assumes his final form. Goku is initially impressed, but Frost’s sneak attack lands a glancing blow, making Goku dizzy. He’s knocked out of the ring and loses the match.

Chi-Chi rushes to Goku’s side, and though he admits his loss, he’s congratulated by Frost. Before Piccolo fights Frost, Goku warns him that he’s outmatched but should try to weaken Frost for Vegeta. When Frost is caught cheating—using a poison needle—Goku’s loss is overturned, and he’s reinstated to fight later. However, Beerus insists Monaka still go last.

After Vegeta loses to Hit, Goku steps in. He begins testing Hit’s abilities and manages to block one of Hit’s Time-Skip attacks. Goku starts landing blows, adapting to Hit’s movements. Forced to get serious, Hit powers up. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue, then takes it further by activating the Kaio-ken technique on top of the form—a dangerous move with only a 10% success rate. He explains that this was never possible with earlier Super Saiyan forms due to their instability, but Super Saiyan Blue’s ki control makes it possible.

Goku powers up 10x and overwhelms Hit, but his body begins to suffer under the pressure. He fires a Kamehameha, but Hit survives and increases his Time-Skip ability. Goku wants to fight without rules, believing Hit is holding back due to the no-kill clause. Champa agrees to lift the rule, but Beerus protests. Amid the argument, Goku voluntarily jumps out of the ring, saying he wants a rematch later. After ending the Kaio-ken, Goku collapses in pain.

In the anime, Beerus scolds Goku for taking such a risk and reminds him Monaka still hasn’t fought. Goku, unaware that Monaka is just a motivational tool, cheers him on. Hit throws the match deliberately, and Universe 7 wins. Zeno suddenly appears and says he enjoyed the tournament and wants to hold another. Goku casually agrees, which alarms Beerus and Champa. Goku and Zeno shake hands, with Zeno calling Goku funny.

Goku later talks with Hit, eager for a rematch. After Beerus uses the Super Dragon Balls to make his wish, the group returns to Beerus’ planet. Goku asks for a spar with Monaka, but Beerus declines, saying they’re all too tired and should rest. Whis returns the Z Fighters to Earth.

Copy Vegeta Saga
After Universe 7’s tournament win, Bulma throws a celebratory party attended by Beerus, Whis, and Monaka. Goku, resting on his farm, eventually teleports in and becomes fixated on fighting Monaka, whom he still believes to be incredibly powerful. To prevent Goku from learning the truth about Monaka’s weakness, Beerus tries to delay the match by ordering Goku to perform an absurd number of sit-ups. Goku complies, not realizing the number is exaggerated.

As Goku persistently pushes for a fight, Beerus disguises himself in a Monaka costume created by Mr. Satan. Goku falls for the ruse and the two begin a serious battle, during which parts of the costume start tearing. Piccolo and Vegeta attempt to cover for Beerus by pretending Monaka has mind control powers, but Beerus brushes them off and continues sparring, clearly enjoying himself. Whis eventually stops the fight before it causes major damage. Goku, still convinced, is amazed by "Monaka's" power. When he later sees the real Monaka unconscious, Goku assumes he split into two beings. With the secret intact, the group begins enjoying the feast.

Sometime later, Goku's family becomes concerned when he shows little appetite, prompting Chi-Chi to suggest he visit King Kai. Meanwhile, Goku struggles with teleportation as his energy acts out of control, landing him in random places like Bulma’s room, Krillin’s precinct, Penguin Village, and Korin Tower. He finally arrives at King Kai’s planet, who diagnoses him with Delayed Onset Ki Disorder — a condition caused by reckless use of energy, such as Goku's recent use of Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken. King Kai advises him to rest and spend time with family instead of training.

On his way home, Goku crashes into his house due to unstable Ki, frustrating Chi-Chi. The next day, Goku and Chi-Chi watch over Pan while visiting Gohan's house. That night, Goku sits with Piccolo and Pan on the rooftop, joking that even Piccolo could beat him in his current state. He plays with Pan and flies her through the night sky. The following morning, Pan goes missing, and everyone scrambles to find her. She is eventually found sleeping peacefully, and Goku is touched when she calls him "Gramps."

After recovering, Goku resumes training with King Kai. Sensing a disturbance, he teleports to Potaufeu where Goten and Trunks are facing an enemy identical to Vegeta. Goku mistakes the impostor for the real Vegeta until the actual Vegeta, weakened and fading, tells him the truth. Goku confronts the doppelgänger, who possesses Vegeta's strength and even transforms into Super Saiyan Blue.

As the intense battle continues, Vegeta, annoyed, starts shouting advice at both fighters. During the clash, a light flashes and the core of Commeson, the substance creating Fake Vegeta, lashes out at Trunks. Vegeta shields him, and Monaka steps in to crush the core underfoot, severely weakening the clone. Goku finishes off Fake Vegeta with a God Kamehameha, saving the day.

With the threat gone, Potage seals away the Commeson core once more. Goku again praises Monaka’s "strength," and the group heads back to Earth. Goku teases Vegeta about having sucked on the key to the seal — which resembled a pacifier — leaving Vegeta flustered. The two reaffirm their rivalry, declaring they won’t lose to one another.

"Future" Trunks Saga
While Goku is eating on Beerus' planet, Whis receives a distress call from Bulma, showing an unconscious Future Trunks, barely alive after escaping his timeline. Goku, Whis, and Beerus teleport to Earth, and Goku retrieves Senzu Beans from Korin. After being healed, Future Trunks awakens, mistakes Goku for his enemy, and attacks. Once he calms down, he’s shocked to see Goku alive.

Trunks explains the future’s devastation at the hands of Goku Black, a sadistic version of Goku. Goku tests Trunks’ strength, eventually defeating him as Super Saiyan 3. Suddenly, Goku Black appears through a rift and clashes with Goku. As Black grows stronger, the rift pulls him back—he destroys the Time Machine before vanishing.

With Bulma working on a new Time Machine, Goku visits Universe 10 with Beerus and Whis to investigate Black. There, Goku fights Supreme Kai apprentice Zamasu and senses a familiar ki. Though Goku wins, the encounter raises suspicions. Returning to Earth, Goku watches Trunks train with Vegeta. Meanwhile, Zeno summons Goku to ask for a friend to play with. Goku promises to find one and receives a button that can summon or teleport him to Zeno.

The group then uses the repaired Time Machine to travel to the future, where Goku is mistaken for Black. After Trunks explains the situation, they meet the resistance and go confront Black. Black reveals his Super Saiyan Rose form and defeats Vegeta. Goku fights him but is soon outmatched. Future Zamasu arrives to kill Goku himself.

Despite their efforts, Goku and Trunks are overwhelmed by the immortal Zamasu and Black, who now uses Instant Transmission. They're saved by Vegeta and escape in the Time Machine. Back in the present, they regroup and learn Zamasu visited Zuno to inquire about the Super Dragon Balls and Goku. Suspecting Zamasu used the Balls to steal Goku’s body and wish for immortality, Goku and the gods return to Universe 10 and catch Zamasu killing Gowasu. After Whis reverses time, Beerus erases Zamasu.

However, when they return to the future, the timeline remains unchanged. Goku Black reveals he is Zamasu in Goku's body. Enraged by hearing Black murdered Chi-Chi and Goten, Goku attacks and briefly overpowers the two. Eventually, Black and Future Zamasu fuse using Potara into Fused Zamasu.

Despite fusing into Vegito and fighting Fused Zamasu, the Saiyans are eventually overpowered. Future Trunks steps in, using the energy of Earth's people to create the Sword of Hope, slicing Fused Zamasu in half. However, Zamasu's essence spreads as Infinite Zamasu. Goku uses Zeno's button to summon Future Zeno, who erases the corrupted future.

Goku brings Future Zeno to meet Present Zeno, fulfilling his promise. Later, Goku and company say goodbye to Future Trunks and Mai, who begin life in a restored timeline.

Sometime after, Goku senses someone is hunting him—it’s Hit. They fight, and Hit fatally strikes Goku. Goku, however, revives himself with a blast he'd prepared earlier. After figuring out Hit’s evolving assassination technique, Goku defeats him. It’s revealed Goku hired Hit himself via Vados to challenge his strength. Hit smiles, promising to “kill” him another day.

Later, Goku goes to the movies with his family but sleeps through it, earning Chi-Chi’s scolding.

Universe Survivial Arc
Peace having returned, Goku resumes farming and takes his latest harvest to a trader. While driving away in a Capsule Corp. truck, he notices a man whose truck is stuck. Goku offers help but is held at gunpoint by the man and two accomplices demanding the truck. Refusing, Goku incapacitates all but one robber. The last fires a bullet, scratching Goku. After knocking him out, Goku notes he might be getting rusty.

Goku calls Krillin to train, but he’s busy with police work. Instead, Goku contacts Whis and offers bean daifuku in exchange for training. Heading home to change into his gi, Goten asks to join, but Chi-Chi forbids it. The two sneak out while she’s distracted. They pick up the bean daifuku and head to Capsule Corp., noticing Bulma’s large belly. Goku deduces she’s been overeating but learns she’s pregnant again. He offers her the treat, but she declines, saying it’s for Whis.

Goku asks Vegeta to join him, but Vegeta refuses due to Bulma’s impending childbirth. When Whis arrives, he takes Goku to Beerus’ planet for training. Eager for stronger opponents, Goku asks about Zeno’s tournament but is scolded by Beerus and warned not to get involved. Beerus threatens to destroy Goku for his recklessness, but Goku tricks him by pressing the Zeno button, teleporting himself to Zeno’s palace. Goku inquires about the tournament, exciting Future Zeno. The Grand Minister promises to inform Goku when details emerge. Goku returns to Beerus’ planet and asks Whis to take him to the Sacred World of the Kai.

The Grand Minister arrives and briefs everyone on the Tournament of Power. They learn every losing universe will be erased. An exhibition match is planned before the tournament so Future Zeno can witness a fight. Goku must find two fighters in an hour to join him alongside three fighters from Universe 9 for the exhibition.

Back on Earth, Goku asks Vegeta, who refuses. Considering Goten and Trunks too weak, Goku approaches Gohan. Hesitant, Gohan agrees after Goku explains the stakes but insists they keep the universe-erasure detail secret to avoid panic.

When Mr. Satan and Good Buu join, Goku invites Buu to fight in the exhibition. They teleport to the Sacred World of the Kai, where Shin introduces them to their Universe 9 opponents. The Gods and Angels of all universes arrive. The Grand Minister introduces Goku as the tournament instigator and explains the rules. Good Buu defeats Basil; Gohan and Lavender’s match ends in a draw. Watching, Goku notes he can’t sense Universe 9 fighters’ ki, which excites him.

Goku faces Bergamo, who labels him an enemy. Bergamo convinces Zeno to rescind the rule erasing losing universes if he defeats Goku; Zeno agrees. The Grand Minister warns that holding back means instant destruction of all universes. Bergamo lets Goku hit him, growing stronger each time. Goku becomes Super Saiyan, then Super Saiyan Blue, and fires a 10x God Kamehameha that overpowers Bergamo’s Wolfgang Penetrator, winning the match.

Goku is then challenged by Top from Universe 11. Starting as Super Saiyan, Goku struggles until switching to Super Saiyan Blue. They clash destructively; Goku lands an Instant Kamehameha. Preparing for full power, the Grand Minister stops the fight. Top reveals someone stronger exists in Universe 11. Goku returns to Earth and begins assembling a team.

In the anime, Shin reveals only 28 planets have mortal life, focusing the search on Earth. Starting candidates include Goku, Gohan, Buu, Vegeta, and Piccolo. Goku wants Monaka, but Beerus lies that he’s unwell. Goku and Gohan pit Krillin against Basil in a mental battle; despite Krillin losing, Goku decides to recruit him. Goku excludes Trunks and Goten due to inexperience. Gohan suggests Master Roshi; Mr. Satan proposes Android 18, inspiring Goku to recruit Android 17.

Goku and Gohan find Vegeta, who still refuses to join the tournament. Whis solves the problem by using his staff to instantly and painlessly deliver Bulma’s newborn baby, soon named Bulla. Goku and Gohan then head to Satan City where they find Krillin working as a police officer. At Krillin and Android 18’s home, both initially refuse to compete until Goku lies about a ten million zeni reward.

At a remote location, Goku watches Krillin defeat Gohan in a sparring match using Solar Flare x100. Goku also spars with Krillin on a Satan City rooftop. Krillin matches Super Saiyan Goku by cleverly using Destructo Discs. When Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue, he fires a God Kamehameha that collides with Krillin’s Kamehameha. Android 18 intervenes, cutting off Goku’s beam. They challenge Goku to a two-on-one fight, but Goku stops them, admitting he has much to learn. Before leaving, Goku asks 18 about Android 17’s whereabouts; she knows only that he works at a wildlife preserve.

Gohan leaves to train with Piccolo, while Goku visits Dende looking for 17 but is distracted by Good Buu’s nearby training. Buu, now slimmer, spars with Goku and manages to knock him out of bounds while distracted. Goku is impressed by Buu’s new power and looks forward to fighting alongside him. He heads to the Lookout, which Dende has moved to the island where Android 17 works. Dende tells Goku that 17 has grown much stronger and mentions a boy with incredible power living in a small village — the reincarnation of Kid Buu — recommending training him when older.

At the wildlife sanctuary, Goku finds Android 17 dealing with poachers. After helping to drive them off, Goku and 17 spar, with Goku starting as Super Saiyan. The fight is even until Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue. His God Kamehameha is blocked by 17’s Android Barrier, and 17 trades blows evenly until calling off the match to protect the island. Even after Goku explains the tournament’s truth, 17 declines, but when told the Super Dragon Balls are the prize, he begins to reconsider. After Goku helps 17 save animals from intergalactic poachers, 17 agrees to fight and leaves the island in Trunks and Goten’s care.

In the anime, Goku meets Piccolo and recruits him, also asking him to train Gohan. After hearing from Oolong that Roshi is at the Tien-Shin Style Dojo, Goku recruits Roshi and Tien. Tien initially refuses but they are interrupted by Yurin, a former Crane School student brainwashing others against Tien. Roshi falls under Yurin’s spell, and Goku fights the brainwashed Roshi, noting his strength. Goku breaks the spell with a Kamehameha. Yurin returns as Tien’s student, and both agree to fight in the Tournament of Power.

Goku eats with Tien, Roshi, and Chiaotzu when Piccolo and Gohan arrive, with Gohan requesting a sparring match: Piccolo and Gohan vs. Goku and Tien. At Gohan’s training grounds, Piccolo and Gohan win. Gohan then asks for a one-on-one match with Goku, who agrees. Gohan fights evenly with Super Saiyan 2 Goku but falls when Goku uses Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken. Impressed, Goku names Gohan Team Universe 7’s leader.

In the anime, a strategy meeting is held at Capsule Corp. Old Kai suggests unlocking Goku’s potential, but time is short. Goku trains with Whis in the gravity chamber. When Bulma says Good Buu has fallen asleep, Goku tries unsuccessfully to wake him. Returning to Capsule Corp., Goku is confronted for lying about the reward and the tournament truth, and he apologizes.

Short one team member, Goku visits Hell and finds Frieza. Goku explains the situation, and Frieza agrees to participate on the condition Goku uses the Dragon Balls to resurrect him if Universe 7 wins; Goku agrees.

At Fortuneteller Baba’s Palace, Goku and Frieza are ambushed by Universe 9 assassins. The assassin boss throws a Destruction Energy ball from Sidra at Frieza, but he overpowers it and traps Goku while killing the assassins. Beerus and Whis arrive, freeing Goku. Goku challenges Frieza to a fight: if Goku wins, Frieza remains loyal to Universe 7. The fight ends in a draw. Goku helps calm tensions between Frieza and Vegeta. Shin discusses Universe 7’s tournament strategy, though they struggle with teamwork. Whis transports the team to the Null Realm for the Tournament of Power.

In the anime, arriving in the Null Realm, Goku realizes he can’t fly. He greets Hit and Cabba, who introduces Caulifla and Kale. Goku senses strong energy as Team Universe 11 arrives. He greets Top and tries to introduce himself to Jiren, who instantly moves behind him, surprising Goku with his speed.

When the tournament begins, Goku targets Top but is briefly intercepted by Ganos. He faces Top before Top is attacked by Murichim. Goku stares down Jiren but is grabbed from behind by Nink, who locks him in a bear hug. In danger of being thrown out, Goku uses Super Saiyan Blue to knock Nink off and barely grabs the edge to save himself. Goku is then surrounded by five Universe 9 warriors, including the Trio of Danger, much to his delight.

The Trio of Danger fights Goku three-on-one, but Goku conserves stamina by staying in his base form. Lavender uses Poison Blow, which Goku counters with a ki barrier. When the Trio begins to overwhelm Goku with their Dangers' Triangle attack, Vegeta arrives to assist. Together, they face eight members of Universe 9. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan, defeating Chappil and Comfrey, while Vegeta, Frieza, and Android 18 eliminate others. Goku and Vegeta then power up to Super Saiyan Blue and combine their attacks into a Final Kamehameha, defeating the Trio. The Zenos erase Universe 9 in front of everyone.

As fighting resumes, Goku briefly battles Jimizu but is interrupted by Caulifla and Kale. Caulifla demands Goku teach her Super Saiyan Blue, but he says she isn’t ready. She becomes Super Saiyan Third Grade and attacks, but Goku counters easily and warns her about its slowness. Goku shows her Super Saiyan 2, which impresses her, and she transforms into it herself. They begin to fight. Kale tries to intervene, enraged, transforming into a large muscular Super Saiyan and attacks Goku fiercely. Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and fires a God Kamehameha, but it barely affects her. Jiren arrives and quickly defeats Kale with a Power Impact. Goku approaches Jiren as Caulifla and Kale retreat.

Goku prepares to fight Jiren but is struck from behind by Top, forcing a retreat. Goku then teams up with Caulifla and Kale against five Pride Troopers. Struggling, Androids 17 and 18 join, helping turn the tide. Caulifla and Kale defeat three Pride Troopers, and 18 eliminates Cocotte. Goku then fights Universe 2’s Kamikaze Fireballs and clashes with Roasie, who surrounds him with ki blasts. Android 17 protects Goku with an Android Barrier. Goku gains the upper hand, but Jimeze teleports Roasie and Ribrianne away before elimination.

After seeing Gohan defeat Botamo, Goku powers up to Super Saiyan God and joins Hit against Dyspo and K’nsi. Goku battles Dyspo, whose speed cancels Instant Transmission. Goku briefly gains advantage with a Super Saiyan Blue burst but switches opponents with Hit. Goku powers through K’nsi’s Energy Threads while Hit overpowers Dyspo. K’nsi saves Dyspo but is eliminated by Hit. Dyspo retreats, and Goku parts ways with Hit, hoping to fight him and Dyspo again.

Goku’s next opponent is Maji-Kayo, who uses Body Manipulation to hold Goku. Noticing Master Roshi unconscious, Goku breaks free with Super Saiyan Blue and revives Roshi. Goku and Vegeta then pressure Prum, who reflects their ki attacks. After Vegeta eliminates Prum, Goku assists Roshi against Frost but is intercepted by Ribrianne. Goku fights Ribrianne, holding his own in base form despite her love-based attacks. Ribrianne transforms into Super Ribrianne but is overpowered by Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue. Jiren interrupts, silently challenging Goku.

Goku starts fighting Jiren in base form, slowly powering up. Jiren is unfazed by Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, mildly affected by Super Saiyan God. When Goku reaches Super Saiyan Blue, the battle intensifies. The fight captivates the Null Realm audience as Goku pushes himself using X20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken but struggles.

With no options left, Goku drops to base and gathers energy for Universe 7’s Spirit Bomb, powered by all except Vegeta, who declines but protects Goku from Ribrianne’s ambush. Jiren counters the Spirit Bomb, pushing it back. They struggle over the energy, with Goku using X20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken. Exhausted, Goku collapses into the Spirit Bomb’s implosion. Believed dead, the others prepare to attack Jiren, but Goku emerges transformed into “Ultra Instinct,” a divine state unlocked by the Spirit Bomb’s fusion with his energy.

Top and Dyspo attempt to help Jiren but are held off by Goku, who then faces Jiren one-on-one. The intense battle continues until Goku exhausts Ultra Instinct and reverts to base. Jiren prepares to throw Goku out but is interrupted by Hit. Goku retreats to recover, only to be healed by Frieza’s surprise ki blast, who wants Goku to defeat Jiren. Jiren eliminates Hit and orders Top and Dyspo to continue the fight, giving Goku a pointed look.

In the anime, Goku faces Universe 3’s Koitsukai, Pancéa, and Borareta, but Caulifla intervenes, demanding to fight Goku and learn Super Saiyan 3. They battle fiercely; Goku is outclassed but uses experience to hold on until matching her transformation. Kale joins, transforming into Super Saiyan, and the battle continues. Goku struggles, forced to use Super Saiyan 3 temporarily before reverting to Super Saiyan 2 for stamina. Kale regains control of her berserk state, boosting her power. They launch a devastating assault, and Goku targets Caulifla to distract her, focusing on Kale.

Goku’s stamina recovers, and he powers up to Super Saiyan God, gaining an advantage. Preparing to finish them with a Kamehameha, Kefla is formed via Potara fusion, saving them. Kefla lunges at Goku, surprising both with her speed. Goku transforms to Super Saiyan Blue; Kefla responds with Super Saiyan. Using Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken, Goku damages her and counters her Gigantic Blast with a God Kamehameha but is knocked out. Goku revives Ultra Instinct Sign and effortlessly deflects Kefla’s attacks.

Whis theorizes Goku’s form returns due to Kefla’s power rivaling Universe 7’s Spirit Bomb. Kefla powers up to Super Saiyan 2 but is overwhelmed as Goku lands the first hit. Charging an Imperfect Instinct Kamehameha, Goku dodges Kefla’s Ray Blast, lands a direct hit destroying the fusion, eliminating Caulifla and Kale. Whis advises Goku to learn to attack subconsciously to master Ultra Instinct.

Exhausted, Goku is cornered by Universe 2’s Zirloin, Zarbuto, and Rabanra. After they gain Kamikaze Fireballs powers, Androids 17 and 18 join, pushing Goku to fight Zirloin alone. The trio attempts the Pretty Black Hole, but Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue Kamehameha overpowers it, finishing Universe 2. Gohan and Piccolo simultaneously eliminate Universe 6.

Team Universe 7 faces Universe 4’s assault. Gohan and Piccolo eliminate invisible Gamisalas but fall victim to Xiangca’s Illusion Technique. Piccolo kills Xiangca but is eliminated by Damom. Goku saves Android 17 from a similar fate. Goku and 17 defeat Damom together, with Goku disrupting movement and 17 landing the finishing blow, ending Universe 4.

Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan are attacked by Borareta, Koitsukai, and Pancéa, who fuse into Koicéareta. Goku and Vegeta let Gohan handle the threat but intervene when Koicéareta gains advantage. They combine attacks to stall, allowing Gohan to prepare a Kamehameha. Paparoni fuses with Koicéareta into Agnilasa, who nearly knocks Goku out until Frieza helps. Goku, Vegeta, 17, Gohan, and Frieza combine attacks but fail until 17 targets Agnilasa’s energy reactor, defeating him and erasing Universe 3.

In the anime, Jiren, Top, and Dyspo confront Universe 7. Goku and Jiren begin a rematch and exchange motivations. Vegeta interrupts to challenge Jiren. Goku and Vegeta take turns attacking but can’t overpower him initially. Vegeta manages a Final Flash strike but is severely wounded. Goku rejoins the fight. Despite near victory, Jiren recovers, making his shockwaves strong enough to knock Goku out of Super Saiyan Blue. Goku insists he cannot lose and uses Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken as Vegeta powers up to Super Saiyan God SS Evolved.

They put Jiren on the defensive but he regains control. Vegeta fights Top, defeating him. Jiren slaps Goku aside, commending Vegeta, then powers up fully. Goku, Vegeta, and 17 fail to progress; 17 attacks Jiren but is injured. They try to create openings for 17 but are blasted and rescued by Frieza, who is soon defeated. 17 fights Jiren alone, wrapping Goku and Vegeta in a barrier before self-destructing to block Jiren’s attack. Goku thanks 17 and collapses.

After Vegeta falls, he gives Goku his remaining energy. Goku stands and powers up as Jiren questions their trust. Goku attacks angrily but is pushed to the ring edge. As Vegeta and the crowd encourage him, Goku vanishes before Jiren’s strike lands, reawakening Ultra Instinct. Goku effortlessly dodges and injures Jiren. The fight escalates until Jiren’s energy blast blows Goku away. Encouraged by Vegeta’s words, Goku returns, overwhelming Jiren until blasted to the boundary.

Top notices Goku fighting back, landing a heavy punch. Jiren throws Power Impact, but it and Goku vanish. Goku reappears, glowing white, catching and dispelling Jiren’s attack. Jiren fails to hit Goku, unable to see his movements. Goku’s aura softens, revealing Ultra Instinct mastery as Whis and Beerus smile. Goku dominates Jiren.

Jiren breaks his limits, trading blows and knocking Goku down repeatedly. Goku charges a Kamehameha, met by Jiren’s Power Impact. Overwhelmed and believed unconscious, Goku rises, explaining his determination from friends and family. They clash fiercely, with Goku overpowering and severely wounding Jiren.

Accepting defeat, Jiren asks Goku to finish him. Suddenly, Goku collapses in pain, engulfed by dark ki. Whis notes the gods’ limit-breaking power has overstrained Goku’s body. Jiren blasts Goku out, but Frieza saves him, and Android 17 also survives.

Though drained, Goku continues fighting alongside Frieza and 17. They tackle Jiren offstage with combined power; Goku powers up to Super Saiyan and Frieza uses full strength. Afterward, 17 wishes the erased universes back. Goku meets him on the ruined stage.

At Beerus’ request, Whis permanently revives Frieza. Frieza vows not to change, but Goku promises to defeat him if he causes trouble again. Returning to Earth, Universe 7 celebrates at Capsule Corp. Vegeta challenges Goku to a spar, their battle reaching the original wasteland where they first fought. When Vegeta asks why Goku didn’t use Ultra Instinct, Goku says he can’t use it at will. The two vow to keep surpassing their limits.

Broly Saga
Goku and Vegeta confront Super Saiyan Broly in a frozen landscape, both utilizing their Perfected Super Saiyan Blue forms. The intense battle unfolds amid the icy terrain as the three warriors clash with overwhelming power and relentless ferocity.

Super Hero Saga
Later, Goku and Broly engage in a training spar, both fighting in their base forms with Broly as the aggressor. Goku praises Broly’s progress, noting that soon he’ll be able to fight calmly without losing control. He suggests increasing the intensity, which Broly eagerly accepts. When Broly starts losing control, Goku ends the match and shifts focus to Vegeta, questioning his distracted meditation.

Vegeta then experiences a breakthrough in his training. Whis appears to commend him and proposes a sparring match between the three Saiyans, but they quickly decide to exclude Broly. After a feast, Goku and Vegeta start their extended sparring session. The fight lasts for hours, with both warriors pushing themselves to exhaustion. Eventually, they attempt a final decisive clash, resulting in both falling from fatigue shortly after.

Peaceful World Saga
A decade after Majin Buu's defeat, Goku continues training even though Earth remains peaceful. While training with his youngest son, Goten, Goku insists Goten cancel a date so he can participate in the upcoming tournament, which frustrates Goten.

During the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku faces Uub, the reincarnation of Majin Buu, born after King Yemma granted Goku’s wish ten years earlier. Uub suffers from severe stage fright, so Goku deliberately provokes him with insults and crude gestures to ignite his fighting spirit and overcome his fear.

After a brief but intense fight, Goku apologizes, explaining the insults were meant to draw out Uub’s true strength. He then offers to train Uub to become Earth’s future protector, later expressing a desire to spar with him again—not just to determine who is stronger between them, but who is the strongest in the universe. The two fly off together into the horizon.

Personality

  • Gentle and Kindhearted: Despite his Saiyan origins, Goku possesses an exceptionally kind and pure heart. After losing his early programming for aggression through a head injury, he developed into a compassionate and well-meaning individual. His upbringing under Grandpa Gohan instilled in him values of respect, generosity, and a warrior's honor when fighting.
  • Energetic and Cheerful: Goku is defined by his unshakable optimism and lively demeanor. He takes life as it comes, finding joy in the simple things and maintaining a carefree outlook even in the face of danger. His enthusiasm for new challenges and boundless curiosity often bring a lighthearted tone to even the most intense situations, such as Cell or Buu attacking.
  • Naïve and Innocent: Growing up isolated in the mountains left Goku inexperienced in many social and academic matters. His straightforward nature leads him to take things at face value, and his lack of understanding of social conventions sometimes causes awkward or comedic moments. Due to his innocence, Goku is a character with a genuine pure heart and not a bit of evil in him.
  • Fear of Needles and Assertive Women: Goku is scared of needles and tends to be submissive toward assertive women like Chi-Chi and Bulma.
  • Pacifistic Warrior: Goku’s love for fighting stems not from malice, but from a deep passion for self-improvement. He seeks worthy opponents to test his limits but avoids unnecessary harm or killing. His preference for sparing enemies has usually led to either having a new ally or a reoccuring enemy.
  • Selfless and Loyal: Deeply protective of his loved ones, Goku often risks his life to safeguard them. His sacrifices against Raditz and Cell are examples of such. He values his friends and family above all else, and his loyalty drives many of his greatest acts of heroism.
  • Inspiring Presence: Goku has an unusual ability to bring out the best in others. His sincerity, humility, and boundless compassion have earned him the respect of gods, warriors, and enemies alike. Figures such as Tien Shinhan, Piccolo, Vegeta, Beerus, Hit, Jiren, and even Frieza have found themselves moved or changed by Goku’s example.
  • Simple and Humble: Goku lives without interest in wealth, fame, or authority. He declined roles such as Guardian of Earth or God of Destruction, valuing freedom over status. His motivations are simple—he trains, fights, and explores to grow stronger and protect others.
  • Loving Family Man: Though often absent due to his training, Goku loves his family deeply. He cherishes Chi-Chi’s dedication and finds joy in his children’s and granddaughter’s happiness. His bond with Grandpa Gohan remains one of his most emotional ties, shaping his moral compass and sense of gratitude. Though it is noted that he is not good at being a father.
  • Naïve yet Insightful: Goku’s innocence can lead to poor judgment, such as offering enemies leniency or underestimating risks. However, he possesses strong intuition and tactical awareness in battle. His adaptability and quick learning make him a formidable strategist despite his casual demeanor.
  • Playful but Serious in Combat: Goku treats combat as both a test and a joy. He values fair, honorable fights and insists on facing opponents at their best. His Saiyan instincts push him to constantly evolve, yet he also respects teamwork and recognizes the importance of the bonds that empower him.
  • Respectful but Unconventional: While generally polite, this is in an informal manner. Goku often disregards social hierarchies, speaking casually even with divine beings such as the Omni-King. Though his bluntness can seem insensitive, it comes from a place of honesty rather than disrespect. It is also shown when Goku believes he's talking to one much older then him that he speaks more polite towards them, such as when he learned Hit was over 1000 years old.
  • Innocent toward Romance and Modesty: Having little exposure to social norms, Goku shows limited understanding of romance or modesty. He rarely displays lustful behavior and remains faithful to Chi-Chi out of love and respect and due to believing it to be the right thing to do. It is even noted that Goku doesn't know what kissing is.
  • Driven by Compassion and Curiosity: Above all, Goku’s defining trait is his compassion. He fights not for conquest but to protect, understand, and connect with others. His unshakable belief in growth—his own and others’—makes him eternally try to find ways to surpass his limits.

Appearance

All the versions of Goku throughou the manga

General Description: Goku is a young man who closely resembles his father, with the same spiky black hair, dark eyes, and facial structure. However, he has softer features and a lighter skin tone inherited from his mother. His hair is one of his most recognizable traits, with three bangs hanging to the right, two to the left, and several spikes that stand up in the front and back. Goku was born with a brown, prehensile Saiyan tail that was removed several times during his childhood before being permanently taken off in his late teens.

Facial Features: Goku’s face reflects his cheerful and straightforward personality. He has round, expressive eyes and a generally friendly appearance. Despite his years of training and battle experience, his face retains a youthful look, and his expressions often show curiosity or determination.

Clothing/Outfit: Goku is most often seen wearing his trademark orange gi, which has gone through several small changes over time. His original outfit was a simple blue gi with a white sash, red wristbands, and dark blue shoes. During his training under Master Roshi, he began wearing the Turtle School Uniform — an orange gi with Roshi’s kanji on the chest and back, blue wristbands, a black belt, and matching shoes. As he trained under new mentors, his uniform changed slightly. After training with Kami and King Kai, he wore darker undershirts and boots, with the kanji updated to represent each teacher. In Dragon Ball Z, his outfit became plainer, featuring an orange gi, blue undershirt, and blue wristbands and boots, a look he kept for most of his battles. Under Whis’ training, Goku wore a looser orange gi with Whis’ kanji on the chest, along with blue wristguards and boots. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he also wore a blue winter jacket with white stripes and the letters “SAB” on the front to adapt to the cold. In later arcs, he alternated between different belt styles and colors depending on his training, and during the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, he wore a blue tunic with dark green pants and orange wristbands.

Special Features: Goku’s Saiyan tail was once an important feature of his physiology, allowing him to transform into a Great Ape under a full moon. It was eventually removed to prevent further transformations. His spiky hair, which remains unchanged regardless of age or form, has become one of his defining traits.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Outside of battle, Goku has worn a variety of outfits, including formal clothing, casual wear, and farmer attire. These range from suits and jackets to simple shirts and pants, but his trademark hairstyle and relaxed demeanor make him easy to recognize in any outfit.

Legacy

  • Dragon Ball: Local Legacy (Goku was known across some villages as a hero that saved them)
  • Dragon Ball Z: Local Legacy on Earth (Goku is less recognizble due to using different forms that change his hair and eye color[2], thus he isn't as well known for acts such as stopping the Saiyans, on top of that, many of his accomplishments have been given to Mr. Satan instead), Planetary Legacy out of Earth (Known by the Namekians as the savior of Namek)
  • Dragon Ball Super: Local Legacy on Earth, Multiversal Legacy out of Earth (Known across the multiverse due to the Tournament of Power)

Though on both occasions he was wished back to life by the dragon balls)

Date of Death: DBZ Chapter 9 for the first death, DBZ Chapter 218 for his second death

Alignment: Chaotic Good (Goku, as per his nature as a Saiyan, seeks a good fight more than he seeks to preserve peace. Although he does value peace greatly and will fight for it, he has a knack for stretching out fights simply to make them more entertaining for himself despite the risks that come with it, such as when he allowed for Tao Pai Pai to hit him with various attacks just to see what he's made of, letting Piccolo live because he wanted a strong rival, allowed Frieza to reach his final form, gave Cell a Senzu Bean, or refrained from using Super Saiyan 3 against Majin Vegeta. Though despite this, Goku is a truly good soul, as noted by Lord Enma, he has a list of meritorious achievements that are enough to fly straight to the upper world and has no evil in his heart)

Protection Level: Global Protector in original Dragon Ball (Fought and saved the world from King Piccolo), Cosmic Protector in Dragonball Z (Fought against Frieza, the emperor of the universes, fought against the Saiyans who locate hospitable planets and sell them to other races looking for living space but to make those worlds suitable they first must exterminate all life on the planet. Fought against Cell, whose goal is to destroy the entire universe), Multiversal Protector in Dragon Ball Super (Fought against Zamasu, a being that wishes to exterminate all life in the multiverse)

Potential

  • Potential Type: Transcendent Potential
  • Potential Level: Transcendent
  • Description: Goku is well-known for constantly surpassing his limits, even breaking through previously unattainable barriers, Vegeta makes reference that he and Goku will keep breaking their limits the more they fight. Though he has a maximum power level, his ability to continually transcend it makes his potential nearly limitless.
  • Limitations: Goku cannot constantly transcend his limits and will have points where he is not strong enough to deal with the threat. Some examples include his fight against Cell where he knew he wasn't strong enough to beat him and opted for his son Son Gohan to defeat Cell. Another example is his fight against Beerus where even though he broke his limits a couple of times, he at the end could not overcome Beerus' power.

Archetypal Tiering: Battle Junkie / Understudy (To Master Roshi originally and later to Beerus)

Dragon Ball

  • Power Pole: The Power Pole is a magical, length-changing staff that is owned and wielded by Goku for most of the original Dragon Ball series. Before Master Roshi gave the Power Pole to Grandpa Gohan, it was owned by Korin. Although Goku uses it primarily as a weapon, its true purpose is to use its size-changing ability to travel from Korin Tower to The Lookout.
  • Four Star Dragon Ball: The most well-known Dragon Ball is the Four-Star Dragon Ball, being the one Grandpa Gohan had and which Goku kept after he passed away, also being the one which Goku put on his first son Gohan's hat. On its own it has no real special abilities, however it can serve as a way to shield Goku from attacks that would've otherwise killed him.

  • Flying Nimbus: Flying Nimbus is a magical, yellow cloud that serves as a way of transportation. Goku obtains the Nimbus from Master Roshi as compensation for saving Turtle. It served Goku and his sons well throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, by acting as a way for them to fly around at high speeds without using up any energy.
  • Senzu Beans: Senzu Beans are mystical beans with immense rejuvenation properties, being capable of healing entire wounds, such as one's stomach being punctured.
  • Dragon Radar: An invention of Bulma made to track down Dragon Balls. While Goku and other people can sense the Dragon Balls' energy in a general area, the Dragon Radar can pinpoint their exact location from across the entire planet. This let Goku and his friends track all the Dragon Balls within days rather than years, or hours with teleportation.

  • Dragon Balls: Dragon Balls are the titular artifacts of the Dragon Ball series. They are large, crystalline spheres that feature five-pointed stars inside of themselves; individually, they have no powers, but united they have the ability to call forth their associated Eternal Dragon. Originally under Kami, Shenron could only grant one wish. However, under Dende, Shenron can grant three wishes, however since Dende is not powerful enough, Shenron can only fulfill two of the three wishes if a large number of people are revived using one of the wishes. Alternatively, Porunga can grant three wishes, however, Porunga could only bring one person back from the dead per wish as compared to Shenron who can revive an unspecified number per wish. Later, Porunga's power is strengthened by Moori to bring back as many lives as needed without any reduction in the remaining number of wishes.

Dragon Ball Z

  • Artificial Saiyan Tail: A prosthetic tail modelled after Goku's Saiyan Tail which Bulma created for Adult Goku to use for fishing in place of his natural tail that was removed by Kami. Used by Goku to catch fish in Kakarot.

On its own it has no real special abilities, however it can serve as a way to shield Goku from attacks that would've otherwise killed him.
  • Attack Ball: Spaceships used for interstellar travel. Due to being a low-class Saiyan, Goku was sent to Earth, so that he would one day conquer it. The space pod landed somewhere in a jungle or forest, and it was there that Grandpa Gohan found Goku and adopted him. Goku also used an Attack Ball belonging to the Ginyu Force to escape the exploding Namek after his battle against Frieza, eventually using the Attack Ball to arrive on Planet Yardrat and later Earth.
  • Potara: Sacred earrings worn by Supreme Kais to symbolize their full elite status as grand overseers of their respective universe. While worn so casually, they have incredible properties. When a matching set is worn between two people on opposite ears, they will immediately be fused into new individual that represents the apex of both people's traits combined. While fusing with a Kai will result in a permanent fusion, any other union will only last for an hour.

Dragon Ball Super

  • Zeno Button: Zeno's Button is a teleportation device that would summon Zeno or Future Zeno to the location the user is at. On the other side there is another button where the user will be transported to Zeno. When Goku came to see Zeno, he invited him to come to Earth sometime, so Zeno gave him a button where Zeno would appear. Later in the Future timeline Goku thought he had another Senzu Bean only for it to turn out that it was Zeno's button. Goku used it to summon Future Zeno in order to erase Infinite Zamasu. Sometime later, Goku thought about reminding Zeno of the upcoming tournament. Beerus, however, was skeptical, even when Goku revealed the alternate button of teleporting himself to Zeno. Threatening to kill Goku, Goku tricked Beerus and teleported himself to Zeno.

Notable Techniques

  • Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper: A technique taught to Goku by Grandpa Gohan which employs one of three attack styles; either a closed-fist assault, a two-finger jabbing assault, or an open-palm thrust assault. It was Goku's signature attack early on during his childhood, soon afterwards being replaced with the Kamehameha.
  • Tail Attack: A technique used by those who have tail in order to attack their opponents. They can use it to whip or constrict the opponent. Goku uses this to break free from Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Double Axe Hand: Goku cups his hands together and reels back, then slams his fists on the opponent.
  • Eight-Arm Fist: A physical technique that involves its user moving their arms fast enough that they seemingly have eight of them, allowing them to attack and defend themselves much more efficiently. Used to counter Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Crazy Fist: A distraction technique used by Goku and designed to confuse and taunt the opponent. Pretending to be a wild uncontrollable dog or monkey, Goku catches his opponent off guard, and eventually knocks him out with a swift kick by jumping from behind. Goku uses this in reaction to Jackie Chun's Drunken Fist.
  • Tornado!: After calling the name of the attack, Goku spins while rushing on the opponent to attack him/her. Used against Nam.
  • Afterimage Technique: Goku creates perfect replica afterimages of himself to give the illusion of him still being in a location making it difficult for the opponent to actually harm his true self.
  • Mid-Air Stop: While falling to the ground, Goku exhales his breath like an explosive blast to stop his decent. Goku uses this technique against King Chappa in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament preliminaries.
  • Tail Helicopter: Goku swings his tail in a circle fast enough to hover and fly freely. Used only once, in his fight against Jackie Chun in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
  • Dragonthrow: Goku grabs his opponent's arm, leg, tail, or antenna, then he spins and throws them away.
  • Meteor Combination: First, Goku charges at the opponent and elbows them away. Then, he attacks the opponent with a powerful barrage of kicks and punches, ending with a heavy punch to their stomach. When the opponent lays on the ground paralyzed, Goku jumps up in the air and fires a Super Kamehameha down at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Meteor Smash: Goku punches the opponent in the stomach. Then, he punches the opponent away and flies after them to right hook kick them in their face. Finally, Goku axe kicks the side of the opponent's head, knocking them away and inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Ki Blast: The most basic energy attack, Goku creates a small form of energy that he blasts at an opponent, usually he uses this to keep his distance from an enemy or to distract them so he can land another attack.
  • Kiai: A technique where Goku affects the air currents around him with ki to produce powerful shockwaves in order to strike the opponent at mid-range.
  • Kamehameha: Goku's signature move since obtaining it. It unleashes a powerful and long-stretching blue energy blast from his cupped hands. Goku first learns the move as a kid after witnessing Master Roshi using it. It can be charged to compete with practically any enemy attack. Since mastering this technique, Goku has continued to improve on it and develop new variations of it.
  • Solar Flare: Goku places his hands close to the center of his face with the fingers spread toward his eyes. He then calls out the name of the technique, which provokes a white light to fire out and blind everything watching except him, since he is projecting the light.

  • Agile Style: After his training under Kami, Goku could remove the Weighted portions Turtle School Uniform to increase his power level and agility due to being no longer incumbered by the heavy weights allowing him to utilize a more agile fighting style hence its name. Goku first used it during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and later when he confronted his brother Raditz alongside Piccolo. According to Raditz's Scouter, Goku's power level rose from 334 to 416 indicating the weight removal alone increased his power level by 82. This state was named in Dragon Ball Legends (albeit in relation to Piccolo & Pikkon's use of Agile Style) where it is the "base" form used by Goku (DBL22-01S) which represents Goku from the period during which he fought Raditz.
  • Bōjutsu: The art of wielding a staff which Goku utilizes when wielding his Power Pole. Goku learned it from the Power Pole's previous owner, his adoptive Grandpa Gohan. Goku's Bōjutsu skills are so great that he can use his Power Pole to deflect bullets as shown during his assault on Muscle Tower. Additionally, due to the Power Pole's mystical length changing properties, his attack range with the Power Pole is much greater than an average staff.

  • Great Ape: Like all Saiyans, Goku can transform into a Great Ape when absorbing enough blutz waves, usually from looking at a full moon, while still having his tail, though not of his choosing. As a Great Ape, Goku's dormant Saiyan traits re-emerge, and he becomes feral and violent. His power and senses increase 10-fold and are able to generate powerful mouth blasts. However, because his tail was removed permanently Kami when restoring the moon, Goku lost access completely to this form.
  • Unlock Potential: After drinking the Ultra Divine Water and surviving its painful side-effects, Goku's true potential was released, apparently in the form of accessing Great Ape in his base form. This was seen by his natural aura manifesting as an image of a Great Ape surrounding him, essentially absorbing the power of the Great Ape into himself. The power boost not only enabled him to fight on par with King Piccolo in his prime, who previously decimated Goku in his frailer elderly state, but it also heightened Goku's senses and instincts, able to detect the location of people's ki.

  • Kaoi-ken Finish: First, Goku charges at the opponent and kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up after the opponent and double axe-handle punches them down to the ground. Next, he powers up to his Kaio-ken technique as he charges down at the opponent and double-punches them in their back. Finally, Goku quickly lands on the ground and catches the opponent on their back before throwing them onto the ground, inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Kaoi-Ken Attack: Goku powers up to Kaio-ken x3 as he charges at the opponent and roundhouse kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up in the air and punches the opponent away. Next, he flies up over the opponent and down behind to double kick them further up into the air. Finally, Goku flies up into the air around the opponent and hook kicks them down into the ground, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
  • Spirit Bomb: Easily Goku's most powerful techniques and arguably the strongest in the series, it allows Goku to channel ki from all sources of life that he can detect and focus it all into a single energy ball. It was taught to him by King Kai during his training for the upcoming battle against Vegeta and Nappa. Over time, Goku continually learned to expand the range of which he could gather energy, thereby increasing both the size and power of the Spirit Bomb. He reserves this technique as a last-ditch effort for only the most powerful of foes.
  • Instant Transmission: Goku learns this technique on the Planet Yardrat after his battle with Frieza by learning Spirit Control - which also allowed him to sense ki from a much greater distance. This technique allows him to teleport to any location so long as he can find an energy source to home onto. However, it also greatly extends his ability to sense energy. Noticeably in Yo Son Goku, he seemingly improved on the technique as transports to the radish field without sensing anyone, possibly because he had accurate enough knowledge of where it is.
  • Fusion Dance: A short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size. To correctly perform the Fusion, the fuses must strike the poses in a perfectly symmetrical image of one another. The result of a correctly performed Fusion Dance is a superior being whose power is multiplied several-fold over that of the individual fuses.

  • Kaoi-ken: Goku learns this technique while training under King Kai after dying against Raditz. While using it and any of its multipliers, Goku's various capacities and techniques are all proportionally increased. However, the strain of using too high a multiplier and/or for too long can be dangerous and greatly damage his body. As such, he ceased using it after his gaining Super Saiyan. While he can combine the two powers, Goku never tried this while alive as doing so could lead to near-certain death. Later, however, with his Super Saiyan Blue, taking advantage of his divine form's superior energy control and more naturally calm mindedness, he was able to use this technique more regularly.
  • Super Saiyan: Goku achieves this form in a rage after Frieza killed Krillin. In this form, Goku's muscle and height slight increase and his skin turns lighter. His eyes become noticeably sterner and more defined with green eyes. His hair becomes blond and stands with no loose strands. His power also generates a yellow aura. In the anime, when unleashing the full intensity of his power, Goku's aura also produces some slight electrical sparks. Goku's demeanor is greatly affected by this form, making him more aggressive and irritable.
    • Super Saiyan Second Grade: Realizing that the androids' power exceeds a Super Saiyan, Goku entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to surpass the basic Super Saiyan form. Ultimately, Goku unlocked this form after weeks of training. However, Goku realized that this form spends too much ki to be maintained. Rather than attempting the more arduous and time-consuming task of refining this form, Goku came to the conclusion that the basic Super Saiyan form is better suited for combat, making a plan to master it and abandon this form completely. As a result of this and discovering more powerful forms, this form is never used again.
    • Super Saiyan Third Grade: Along with Second Grade, Goku achieves this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. While vastly stronger than Second Grade, the power output is too intense, causing Goku's muscles to become engorged from the struggle of maintaining this unsteady power boost. This instability drained his ki too fast to be of use for long. It also causes an extreme drop in his speed and agility, tiring him even more and reducing his effectiveness overall. Goku noted that while much stronger than Semi-Perfect Cell, it meant nothing if he could not actually hit his foe with it. This made this form impractical against foes of any real speed. Instead of training to overcome this problem, Goku decides that simply mastering the basic Super Saiyan, feeling that it is the best way to fight and gain power. As such a result, this form is never used again.
    • Mastered Super Saiyan: After realizing the weaknesses inherent to the higher Super Saiyan grades, Goku concluded that mastery over the basic Super Saiyan form would be more beneficial. He used the remainder of his time chamber training learning to maintain Super Saiyan for extended periods. Gradually, he overcame the heightened aggression and uneasiness that accompanies this form to feel as natural as his base form, reducing the energy drain to nothing and increasing his endurance to achieve a max output for this form without drawbacks even in regular life. Ultimately, he is able to enter, maintain, and fight in this form for as long as he desires at its full potential with no loss in efficiency or performance. In the anime, with this mastery, during the Tournament of Power, Goku - having gone well-beyond his limits - was able to flash between base and Super Saiyan to defeat Jiren alongside Frieza despite his battered and exhausted state.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Goku achieved this form at some time after Cell's defeat while in the Other World. In this form, Goku gains some changes; his hair becomes spikier, his forehead has only three bangs over it, making his hair more defined than his other previous Super Saiyan forms. His muscles also become more defined, and his aura also generates electricity surrounding his body, while the aura grows markedly larger and more vibrant. Since gaining greater forms, Goku reserves this form for opponents he takes semi-seriously.
  • Super Saiyan 3: Goku's strongest form in the original manga and anime. Goku achieved this level after years of training in Other World, where he could put unlimited energy into this form. In this form, his hair reaches down to his thighs and his eyebrows vanish completely while making the forehead and eye ridges larger and more prominent. His muscle mass grows noticeable larger more defined while his eyes gain green irises. His aura also becomes rounder with larger electrical sparks. Goku first used this form against Innocent Buu during the Majin Buu Saga, where he had a slight advantage over the Majin. However, this form is extremely draining in terms of energy due to the living world having less energy to siphon. This made him tire fast and even cut Goku's time left on Earth from hours to a mere thirty minutes after using this form for a short time. When attempting to gather enough energy to defeat Kid Buu, he was unable to sustain it as he had not taken into account the strain overcoming his living body, and soon reverted to his base state. Altogether, these heavy disadvantages make it impractical to use this form out of the afterlife and even more while alive.

  • Dash Power: Surrounded by an aura of godly ki Goku dashes towards the opponent and delivers a straight arm punch to the opponent.
  • Godly Ki mastery: Goku can change the nature of his ki to that of the gods, increasing his power drastically. With the Godly Ki, Goku gains access to god-level transformations such as the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue.
  • Regeneration: Super Saiyan God Goku is able to regenerate by pouring his godly ki into his wounds.
  • Energy Nullification: During his battle with Beerus, Goku learned how to nullify the negative damaging effects of their clash.
  • Evil Containment Wave: A technique learned from Master Roshi to battle Goku Black and Future Zamasu. It binds a target in a swirling stream of green energy before being guided into a container. It also requires a special tag to properly complete the sealing. While normally life-threatening to use, Goku's immense power lets him use this multiple times without even remotely exhausting any of his strength. The benefit of the technique is to defeat enemies they cannot or will not kill.
  • Explosive Power: Goku rapidly switches between the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue forms in order to utilize Super Saiyan Blue's power to its full potential.
  • God Bind: By channeling the Saiyan God power through the user's hands, the user can use the energy generated to stop an opponent in their tracks.

  • Autonomous Ultra Instinct: The art of automatic self-movement, Goku began learning this from Whis. During the Tournament of Power, Goku unlocked a special state, enabling him to put to usage this skill. While very crude at first and only able to apply it defensively, he ultimately learned to complete this power to defend and attack simultaneously with optimum efficiency. With this power, he is able to instinctively and instantly react to any nearby threat in the most effective way possible. Initially, Goku's usage of this ability was only unlocked subconsciously during dire situations and he was unable to activate it at will after the Tournament of Power.

  • Super Saiyan God: The "Super Saiyan God" is the legend among legends of the warrior race, the Saiyans. The power of six good-hearted Saiyans must be infused for one of them to achieve this legendary form. As Shenron explains to the Dragon Team and company, a Super Saiyan God once appeared on Planet Vegeta to stop the evil Saiyans but he failed because of the form's time limit. The Namekians were aware of the Super Saiyan God and wrote of the method to achieve the form in their book of legends. When in this form, the Saiyan's general appearance has only slight differences: the most notable change is the slight pink skin tone (similar to the usage of Fury) and hair that is a shade of red. In this form, Goku possesses magenta-red hair while Vegeta possesses crimson red hair. The hair retains its natural style but becomes more refined (losing any stray hairs). The Saiyan's eyes become more detailed, and the irises become red (appearing as more relaxed even in battle until sufficiently angered). The overall body structure appears to become younger and thinner in frame and build, though this is not the case for the Future Warrior and Shallot, as their musculature stays the same in their Super Saiyan God forms. The aura of the Super Saiyan God resembles a raging fire. At the time of its debut, Super Saiyan God was "a being that surpasses everything". The power of this form is great enough to allow Goku to compete against the non-fully powered God of Destruction Beerus, who effortlessly defeated Super Saiyan 3 Goku, later the combined effort of Potential Unleashed Gohan (Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan Gohan in the original movie), Good Buu, Piccolo, Android 18, Tien Shinhan, and Gotenks (Super Saiyan in the movie, Super Saiyan 3 in the manga, and base form in the anime), and even a one-on-one assault from a enraged Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta.
    • Saiyan Beyond God: After experiencing the power of Super Saiyan God, Goku learned to use the raw might and enhanced senses of this god-like power without transforming. When in this state, while his physical appearance remains unchanged, his ki can be manifested as a pure white aura. If Goku attempts to become a Super Saiyan while using this power, he will instead become Super Saiyan Blue.
  • Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan: Super Saiyan Blue, also known as Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, is an extremely powerful transformation and a transcension of the Super Saiyan God form. By undertaking godly ki training with a deity to wield the power of Super Saiyan God in one's natural state, a Saiyan may achieve a divinity-empowered base form, which allows them to use Super Saiyan Blue as the Super Saiyan version of Super Saiyan God and surpass it in power. While Super Saiyan God can be easily achieved through a specialized ritual, Super Saiyan Blue has no such shortcuts and must be extensively trained in order to be used correctly. In Goku's words, this form is what happens when a "Saiyan with the power of a Super Saiyan God further transforms himself into a Super Saiyan". Simply, it is the first Super Saiyan form combined with the power and godly ki of a Super Saiyan God turned cyan blue, due to a mortal absorbing it. The form can be obtained by a Saiyan who has become a Super Saiyan God and then retained the power; if the Saiyan utilizes the might of Super Saiyan God and then attempts to transform into a Super Saiyan, they will instead naturally evolve into a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue or Super Saiyan Rosé, depending on the individual's status). Alternatively, as shown in the anime and by Goku Black in the manga, the Saiyan can evolve their standard Super Saiyan form into a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form if they increase its strength until it surpasses Super Saiyan God.
    • Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken: Thanks to the Super Saiyan Blue form's great ki and emotional control, Goku can utilize Kaio-ken alongside it with far less risk. In this state, Goku gains a double aura, leaving Goku to appear as a basic Super Saiyan Blue with his blue over while a larger red aura surrounds it. Goku first used this against Hit in the Tournament of Destroyers. While using Kaio-ken levels too extreme for his body to handle, Goku's blue hair turns a pale blue that is whitish, and his skin is illuminated to a light red. In which case, it will gradually damage his body. This unstable state also will give Goku Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, sending Goku's ki into flux, making him unable to properly access his energy for a few days. By the Tournament of Power, Goku had mastered this technique up to x20 with no instability or strain.
  • Ultra Instinct Sign: A state first attained during the Tournament of Power. Originally, in the anime, Goku did this by absorbing the energy of the Spirit Bomb as a bolster to break a mental shell in the subconscious to unlock a much deeper portion of his potential. In the manga, this state is the pinnacle of Goku's martial arts training; obtained from reflecting on Master Roshi's words and demonstration of proper movement, admitting to his shame in lack of personal growth and letting go of his self-doubt. With this, Goku's physical and mental parameters are vastly augmented, ranking among the most powerful entities in all the multiverse. His hair stands up somewhat, becoming wilder in shape with no loose strands. His eyes become more defined and sterner in shape, while also gaining silver irises. His aura becomes a complex silver with sparkle appearance. In this state, Goku's physical, mental, and energy parameters are vastly augmented, equally increasing his combat performance. He processes information far quicker and efficiently, letting him learn and adapt to all experiences. The highlight of this lets him automatically react to all threats in the most efficient way possible, even without consciously being aware of it. This augmented growth greatly accelerates his natural improvement, constantly imprinting on his experiences to become stronger, faster, and sharper in his actions with every skirmish. In the anime, entering this state also energize him and negate all previous wounds as a battered Goku showed against Kefla. However, initially usage of this state is random and unstable, only accessible for short periods of time and in the direst of situations. In the anime, by his fight against Kefla, while seemingly learning to access this state more willingly, as noted by Whis, Goku's usage is still incomplete. While his movements have become more refined, he struggles to switch his full attention on to his offense, inhibiting his attacks and techniques, requiring more time to build up energy for an assault to have sufficient power. The effort also appears to drain Goku quicker, returning him to his base form and in an exhausted state.
    • Ultra Instinct: Once understanding Whis' words behind self-movement, Goku learned to let go of all self-doubt and live in the moment. When fully synchronizing his impulses with his natural drive, Goku can subconsciously unlock the full potential of his offensive and defensive might. This culminates with Goku's silver glow consuming him, turning his hair silver and skin tone more ethereal in nature. The power in this form is vastly greater than his initial state that it completely shreds away his shirt (in the anime). In this state, Goku showed such fine control of his ki, able to calmly repel and contain any energy assault thrown at him. He can unleash barrages of his energy in focused shockwaves and cancel out all but the strongest of attacks. In addition, while accessing this state, Goku's body is full rejuvenated and, in the manga, can grow sturdier in areas in response to being attacked, even causing weaker foes to break their limbs trying to hit his body.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Dragon Ball: Goku is a trained and gifted martial artists who has always kept the same tactics when entering battle. Goku will size up his opponent to see where their strengths and weaknesses lay, see how strong they are, and dish out various martial arts attacks and techniques to overwhelm his opponent. Goku will never immedieatly go all out from the start unless he fully needs to and will usually start with warm ups.
  • Dragon Ball Z: By the time of Dragon Ball Z, Goku has more energy attacks in his arsenal, having him utilize this along with his punches and kicks, no longer having his power pole in combat. Once Goku has assessed the level of a threat he's facing, he will transform into one of his higher transformations depending on the arc.
  • Dragon Ball Super: Goku displays the same tactics, now with higher levels of transformations.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities Goku use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[268].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.
  • After the Tournament of Power, Goku cannot access Ultra Instinct anymore[269].
  • While some may argue that Goku can breathe in space due to his fight with Beerus, they were only in the upper atmosphere and it's revealed later in Dragon Ball Super that Goku can still not breathe in space[270].

Miscellaneous Feats

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: What about the planetary feats in Dragon Ball?

A: Planetary feats are normally done through their strongest charged blast, where they can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[272], with blasts capable of[273] seriously damaging/destroying[274] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[275], though they themselves are never capable of leaving this unscathed.

Frieza throws a destroy the planet death ball attack but it doesn't destroy the planet. Goku then interestingly notes the reason the planet didn't blow up is because Frieza was too scared of getting caught in the blast[276] . Vegeta's final flash is noted it's going to destroy the planet and Perfect Cell, who is beyond Vegeta, couldn't tank the blast and had to dodge it last second or it would've killed him[277]. Goku's kamehameha was going to destroy the earth and Cell cannot tank this blast, needing to regenerate[278]. Semi-Perfect Cell explosion was consistently noted it was going to destroy the planet and Gohan and it killed Goku[279]. Ultimate Gohan dies to an attack that destroys the earth, his guard was up too since this was when he was fighting Super Buu[280]. Kid Buu shoots a blast trying to destroy the planet, with Vegeta noting he's going to take himself out with it if he lets it off[281]. In Dragon Ball GT, Great Ape Baby Vegeta shoots a super galick gun that he claims will destroy Earth, when Goku is hit by it, he is knocked out to the point that he can't move for a good while, Elder Kai and Shin later state that Baby is going to shoot another blast that will destroy the planet on, greatly injuring Baby if he's caught in the Blast and will kill everyone on the planet if done[282]. Frieza destroyed the entire earth, killing Vegeta in the process[283]. In the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Gohan tells Goku that he doesn't need to hold anything back and can go all out because anything that happens to the Earth can be restored with Dende and the Dragon Balls. Yet, none of Goku's all out attacks destroy the planet but just heavily causes shockwaves around it[284]. Semi-Perfect Cell unleashes a several blast that destroys several islands Android 16 notes that the attacks are just strong enough to not kill Android 18[285].

In the fight of Trunks vs. Mecha Frieza, who is far stronger than his final form, Mecha Frieza immediately goes for his strongest attack, the Supernova. In the original Z anime King Kai even states this is ten times stronger than the power he used on Namek:

  • DBZ Kai Version[286].
  • Original DBZ Anime Version[287]. The attack is directly noted that it could destroy the planet, but doesn't because Trunks catches it, when Mecha Frieza proceeds to detonate it, the explosion is massive but the planet is still intact, implying Frieza must target the core in order to destroy the planet.
