I may be a wimp, but now it's my turn to fight! Teddy! You can take it easy here.
A boy who, though mousy and always timid, is really a mechanical genius. He can use complex weaponry.
~ Character Data on Lloyd

Background

Lloyd (alternatively Loid) is one of the main characters of MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings). He lives in Thanksgiving and goes to school at Twinkle Elementary School. Although he cannot use PSI, he is skilled at using various mechanical objects and explosives.

Lloyd is normally the second character to join Ninten's party, but he can be the third member to join if the player chooses to get to Ana first. Lloyd is the only character that must join Ninten in order to complete the game, as he is needed to make all the areas north of Thanksgiving accessible, as well as being needed to access EVE.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Human Achievements (Ninten, Ana, & Lloyd all showcase great singing and dancing skills, with even Teddy saying it was a great song), Vehicular Mastery (Land Vehicles; Lloyd is able to operate a tank one his own), Weapon Mastery (Uses guns as his primary weapon of choice, however he can also use boomerangs and slingshots, alongside a bunch of other equipment), Genius Intelligence (Is noted to be a mechanical genius who can use complex weaponry), Social Influencing (Social Status; After saving the world from Giygas, Lloyd returned to a hero's welcome at Twinkle Elementary School), Enhanced Senses (Still able to hit enemies even while blinded. Can sense when enemies are nearby through the check system), Extrasensory Perception (Can sense danger in places that people who normally can see ghost can’t), Sheer Will (Accepeted his fate to go on a journey to save the world, traveling into an abandoned factory, an abandoned town, rosemary's haunted mansion without much fear. After Teddy is out of commission, Lloyd notes that it's his turn to fight and he will use his courage), Regeneration (Mid-Low overtime; Able to take attacks such as zombie bites, animal bites, and explosions without being hindered and can heal from them with PSI and by eating food items. Can quickly recover from being dehydrated. Staying at a rest area overnight completely recovers Hp and Pp), Immortality (Undead Immortality; Can die and become a ghost. Reliance [On Universal System]; Losing a battle causes the defeat to be unwritten, becoming a bad dream and allowing the Ninten and co. to wake up at their last save location), Fate Protection, Time Manipulation, & Dream Manipulation (Passive; Lloyd is among a chosen one apart of a universal system of destiny[6], along with being watched over by The Player. Just like in Ness’ game over that her dying is all merely a bad dream), Possible Divine Protection (prayers in the MOTHER series are directly noted to be God being with the person[7], with Paula being able to use prayers to have various supernatural effects to happen in the battle with her prayers being used to ultimately defeat Giygas where in the original translation, Paula was praying directly to God[8]. In MOTHER 1 Ninten is told by Ana's father that they will be victorous on their journey and that his prayers will be heard), Information Analysis (Able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent along with their stats. At the end of the game Maria’s conscious is able to help Ninten and co. with the check stat), Accuracy Manipulation (Ninten’s increase of wisdom raises the chance of inflicting status ailments on an enemy, whether from items or certain PSI techniques. Increasing the fight stat increases the odds of the attack landing and of it being a critical hit), Statistics Boost & Rage Power (Capable of increasing his offense through screaming), Damage Boost (With smash attacks, can deal far more damage then he can regularly), Accelerated Development (Battle & Leveling; Physical Stats & Abilities; Naturally gets stronger as he progresses, naturally gaining resistances through leveling up. His wisdom increases at a far higher rate then the rest of the cast in battle. Grew to where the Starman became a regular random encounter when he was previously an entire boss), Healing (Fully singing the Eight Melodies fully heals the party, the light of the crystal representing Maria’s conscious will heal Ninten and co.), Non-Standard Interaction (Soul Interaction; Can kill and interact with ghosts. Abstract Interaction; Can physically interact and fight enemies from magicant who are abstract representations and feelings of one’s mind), Empathic Manipulation (Defeating enemies causes them to lose their bloodlust and calm down), Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; Comparable to Ninten who through ignoring the Forgotten Man, Ninten makes him disappear, it is noted by a resident of Magicant that he was once well known but everyone forgot him), Has the potential for: Subjective Reality, Creation, Illusion Creation (Standard Illusions), & Mind Manipulation (Magicant is a universe created entirely from the users own memories[9]. It exists only within the mind of the user and is shaped entirely by their thoughts and desires. Magicant World's are shaped from the users perspective. Maria for example warped her own world to fit her views as a Queen. Ness's Magicant was shaped almost like a Town with stars and planets in the background. Along with that, users of Magicant can create weapons, equipments, healing items, and inhabitants that represent a certain side to their mind (A strong example would be the Flying Men which represents the users own courage). Some inhabitants act as enemies that will attack or serve as either a memory of the users own experience or simple civilians. It's unknown if there is a Sea of Eden in other variations of Magicant, however it is stated by Talah Rama that the Truth makes itself known to humanity with Magicant. Magicant only disappears once the goal of the user has been met. To provide some insight, Maria's goal was to recover from amnesia and remember the melody she sung to Giygas, and Ness's goal was to awaken his full potential by touching the Universal System. The journey has to be a momentous part of the person's life that culminates in an event that causes them to look inward and triggers the ability to access their magicant).

Resistance to Cold Temperatures (Can casually walk around in light clothing while walking around the snow-covered town of Snowman), Disease Manipulation & Zombification (Zombie bites do not affect him), Poison Manipulation (Resists the effects of the stinger), Mind Manipulation (Madness Manipulation; Can resist Giygas’s influence, even while he’s fighting him, whose black clouds appearing over the mountains caused all the townsfolk and its people to go crazy. Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sleep Manipulation (Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sense Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, & Paralysis (The more Ninten’s strength raises the less chance he has of being hit with Blindness, Poison and Paralysis), Information Analysis (If Ninten is put into a position where he checks Lloyd there will be no effect), Radiation Manipulation, Temperature Manipulation, Air Manipulation & Poison Manipulation (Can endure the Nuclear Reactor Robot’s explosion without suffering any adverse effects, which would include an intense pulse or wave of heat, light, air pressure, and radiation including a lack of oxygen and carbon monoxide poisoning)

Explosion Manipulation (With bombs and bottle rockets, causes explosion damage), Fire Manipulation (With flamethrower, shoots out and acts as his version of PK Fire), Light Manipulation, Laser Manipulation and Plasma Manipulation (With laser beam and plasma beam, shoots out and acts as his version of PK Beam), Statistics Amplification (With coins and rings, raises one's defense) or Statistics Reduction (With bullhorn, can accidentally raise ones stats if you fail to convince them or lower their stats, the Flea Bag can decrease an enemies offense and defense), Fear Manipulation (Passive; With Repel Ring drives away any weak enemies), Passive Attack Reflection (Passive; With the Franklin Badge capable of completely reflecting lightning based attacks back at the enemy. Shown in MOTHER 1 that it can also reflect PK Beam r. It can even reflect attacks from Giygas), Status Effect Inducement (With flashdark, can blind an opponent decreasing their accuracy), One Hit Kill (With Insecticide, and Super Spray, will instantly kill any arthropod-based enemies, the super bomb instantly kills all enemies in battle), Teleportation (With Onyx Hook, allows Lloyd and co. to teleport back to Magicant without the need of finding an entry point. With memory chip, can teleport back to Eve, even if he’s in magicant. This can also help get him out of BFR), Healing (With various food items, can restore health. With antidote, neutralizes poison quickly), Purification (Material Purification; With Mouthwash, cures Lloyd from colds. With Noble Seed, cures Lloyd of his confusion), The Last Weapon, tells one how to turn off their NES, With Rope, bounds an enemy making them unable to move or attack.

Resistance to Electricity Manipulation (With Earth Pendant), Ice Manipulation (With Fire Pendant), Fire Manipulation & Explosion Manipulation (With H20 Pendant), Statistics Reduction, Status Effect Inducement, Mind Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Power Nullification, and Power Absorption (With Sea Pendant, defends against all PSI attacks)

    Explanations

    Miscellaneous Feats

    Trivia

    • Lloyd's blood type listed as AB MOTHER Encyclopedia[10].
    • Lloyd (excluding Pippi) is the only party member in the game required to join Ninten in order to complete EarthBound Beginnings, being essential in clearing the path to the Thanksgiving train station and reaching EVE.
    • His Japanese name is Roido, which is a pun on roidomegane, meaning "round glasses with plastic rims", the kind of glasses he wears. His name may have been localized as Lloyd, and ultimately Lloyd because in Japanese, R and L are pronounced interchangeably, and Lloyd sounds like the name Lloyd. As a further coincidence, Lloyd means 'grey' in Welsh, which happens to be the color of his hair.
    • Lloyd has the second-fewest primary weapons in the entire Mother series, only having two; the Stun Gun and the Air Gun. For comparison, Poo only has one.
    • Some people theorize that Lloyd was Dr. Andonuts as a child, as they look similar, and are shown to hide in garbage cans. However, this is unlikely due to Dr. Andonuts being far older than Lloyd, and EarthBound taking place in 199X, only around a decade after Beginnings, which takes place in 1988.

    • Giygas - Fight
      • Conditions: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana all teamed up, needing to sing to defeat Giygas.
      • Location: Top of Mt. Itoi
      • Note: Ninten, Lloyd, & Ana could only defeat Giygas through singing Maria's melody, filling Giygas with guilt and causing him to run away, without this, they would've had no chance to win.

    4. Lloyd even now can't forget the paralyzing thrill that ran through his three-year old body when he saw the spine of this book. On top of that, he now seems to even think, "I am none other than the reincarnation of Einstein, the author of this book!"
    5. With Lloyd being that way, what raised his stakes a bit is accorded to his grand invention, "Bathroom TV (dedicated to Einstein)" when he was four years old. It was something where, upon using four mirrors, you could enjoy what was on the TV screen in the living room while you soaked in the bathtub. I guess you could say the words inside the parentheses are proof that he received extraordinary influence from the "Theory of Relativity" he found on his father's bookshelf when he was 3.
    6. Listen well, Ness. I am about to tell you something so important that you should probably write this down.
Ready? You are a chosen one. Your destiny is not yours alone… It is part of a universal “system”.
    7. In MOTHER 2, Paula’s mom tells Ness not to worry about Paula, because “God is with her”. In EarthBound, this was localized to “She has a guardian angel, it seems.”
It’s not a big deal, and it’s pretty well-known that NOA didn’t want any religious stuff in their games back then, so the change is to be expected. I think the guardian angel line sounds better, anyway. But yeah, there’s no way NOA would’ve let a mention of the Christian God fly in their games back then.
But note that even though she mentions God in MOTHER 2, there are no real serious religious themes in the game. So don’t take this one change out of context and make a big deal out of it 😛
    8. In MOTHER 2, during part of Paula’s first prayer, she says something like, “Please, God, if you’re there…” or possibly even, “Please, God, if you’re real…”
In EarthBound, this religious reference got the smack-down and was trimmed to just, “Please…”
    9. The truth of the universe travels the cosmos like a grain and like a wave and speaks to the universes known as man.
