~ Yamcha to Nappa

Background

Yamcha is a major supporting protagonist of the Dragon Ball series, serving as the first martial artist friend and rival of Son Goku. Initially starting as a bandit alongside his shapeshifting partner, Puar, Yamcha later joined Goku's journey and reformed himself. Having trained with accomplished mentors such as Master Roshi, Kami, and King Kai, Yamcha is an accomplished martial artist and defender of Earth.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Yamcha’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Yamcha was born on March 20, Age 733. He became a bandit of the Diablo Desert, and lived off of the resources he would pillage from people passing by. Because of this, he developed very powerful fighting techniques and martial arts skill, as well as a hardened personality; curiously, though, he always dreamed of marriage, and would be paralyzed at just the sight of a woman.

At the age of 14, Yamcha met his companion, the shape-shifting cat Puar, and the two would soon become lifelong friends. Puar became Yamcha’s partner in crime for the next two years, until they crossed paths with a young Saiyan named Goku, and his companions Bulma and Oolong. Although Yamcha was at first simply wanting to rob the crew, Goku’s resilience and Bulma’s appearance kept him at bay. The bandit eventually developed feelings for Bulma, as she did for him.

Yamcha would go on to trail the crew, with the hopes of finally being able to steal from them and return home, although he found himself, more often than not, coming to their aid. Eventually, with how many times he fought alongside Goku’s crew, he teamed up with them, making Yamcha the first member of Goku’s Dragon Team. Yamcha would go on to participate in several World Martial Arts Tournaments, and found tutelage under the legendary Turtle Hermit, Master Roshi.

Soon enough, Yamcha became a formidable opponent and one of the most powerful humans on the entire planet, with his power skyrocketing in order to keep pace with his peers. Unfortunately, however, his relationship was shaky; Bulma mistook his nervousness around women for disloyalty, and the two would eventually split up. However, despite this, Yamcha still remained a loyal, caring, and charismatic friend.

He’s suffered several defeats, namely when he lost his life during the Saiyan invasion on Earth, but continued pushing forwards in his martial arts expertise. No matter how outclassed he felt himself getting, he would continue to do what he could, including joining the Cell Games. Yamcha also went on to follow his true passion, and become a worldwide professional baseball player. Although even with a career in baseball keeping him busy, he will always be there if the Earth is threatened.

As a bandit, he fights for neither good nor evil, and simply pillages people indiscriminately as they pass through the Diablo Desert. Although he preforms the acts of a thief, he never stoops far enough to put his skill up for hire, or ally himself with anyone on any side of the moral compass) | Chaotic Good (Has learned to put his trust in a good number of friends, including Son Goku and Bulma, who he fights alongside. Due to Goku and Bulma fighting as forces of good, Yamcha has found himself training and fighting to protect others as well, although he still advocates for personal freedom) | Chaotic Good | Neutral Good (Having been fully ingrained into the Z Fighters as a trusted and reliable fighter and friend, Yamcha no longer seeks the stark individuality that he once did as a bandit. He now no longer trains by himself, and will always charge into battle against anyone threatening the peace)

Codex Statistics

Key: Emperor Pilaf Saga | 21st Budokai | 22nd Budokai | 23rd Budokai

Tier: 9-B | At least 9-B | 8-B | At least 8-B

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Power Source: Ki (All beings in Dragon Ball[3][4][5] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[6], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[7] block attacks that would otherwise[8] kill them from[9] raising their guard[10], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[11])

Attack Potency: Wall level (Potency) (Fought against a very hungry to the point that he couldn't fight Son Goku. The force of Yamcha’s Wolf Fang Fist sent Goku through several pillars) | At least Wall level (Stronger than before) | City Block level (Fought evenly with a suppressed Tien Shinhan for a while, who fought 22nd Budokai Son Goku, where he is above his Red Ribbon Army Saga self who defeated General Blue who survived his plane crashing into a mountain at full speed{3.72 Tons of TNT}, then after his training with Korin, it was noted by Korin his power increased "manyfold", making him at least two times stronger than before {7.44 Tons of TNT}, and also drank the Water of the Gods, where he absorbed all the hidden potential within him, greatly boosting his power, as training with Korrin increased his power manyfold, an even greater object such as the Water of Gods should have roughly the same effect meaning he should've had at least gotten two times stronger{~15 Tons of TNT}) | At least City Block level (Gotten much stronger over the training period)

Durability: Wall level, Higher with Guard Up (Ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard) | At least Wall level, Higher with Guard Up | City Block level, Higher with Guard Up | At least City Block level, Higher with Guard Up

Striking Strength: Wall Class (Potency) | At least Wall Class | City Block Class | At least City Block Class

Lifting Strength: Superhuman (Comparable to Early Dragon Ball Son Goku who could pick up and throw Bulma’s car, lift and crush a bolder with his own hands, moved a giant boulder with a lot of effort and later could somewhat move a massive boulder with some effort, etcetera) | Superhuman | Superhuman | Superhuman

Travel Speed: Superhuman (Should be comparable to Goku, who could keep up with a pterodactyl; a pterodactyl can move at nearly 30 m/s) | Superhuman (Comparable to Son Goku, who could run 100 meters in 8.5 seconds before his training, with Master Roshi noting after their training they should easily be able to break 5 seconds) | Superhuman | Superhuman (Should be faster than before, due to training nonstop for three years)

Attack Speed: Superhuman (Should be comparable to Goku, who outspeed the perception a pterodactyl; a pterodactyl can react at speeds of nearly 30 m/s) | Superhuman | High Hypersonic (Fought evenly with Tien Shinhan for a while, who can tag 22nd Budokai Son Goku, who could dodge a mouth blast from Tambourine, which he used to tag the flying nimbus where even post King Kai training Goku used the flying nimbus to make it to the saiyans implying it is at least comparable to his flight speed by then, with Goku being capable of traveling over a million of kilometers in two days which results in these speeds. Is comparable to Mercenary Tao, who stated that a jet would take too long and used his pillar, with fighter jets reaching up to 1000 mph) | High Hypersonic

Reaction Speed: Superhuman | Superhuman | High Hypersonic | High Hypersonic

Stamina: Likely Superhuman

Range: Standard Melee, Interstellar with Ki Attacks (Ki attacks can reach out of the planet and to other planets. All ki attacks should be comparable to Goku's kamehameha, which reached all the way to the sun)

Intelligence: Genius Intelligence (Yamcha spent the first 16 years of his life alone in a wasteland, and yet could still adapt to school life incredibly easily. He was the one to figure out that an Oozaru’s weak point was its tail, as well as the first person to suspect that Jackie Chun was Master Roshi. He was able to perform the Kamehameha after only viewing it, despite Master Roshi claiming it takes 50 years of hard training to learn)

Powers and Techniques

Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (All beings in Dragon Ball[21][22][23] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[24], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[25] block attacks that would otherwise[26] kill them from[27] raising their guard[28], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[29]), Aura (Projection; A users ki aura can exert itself[30] as a weapon to attack[31]. Explosive; Ki users through powering up can form an entire aura around themself, radiating their immense power[32], where depending on their immense strength, can cause them to explode their aura outwards to remove excess ki from themself[33]. Mood Reflection; Goku and Piccolo Jr. with their auras and their stern concentration on each other reflected in their electric auras, even shooting electricity at each other[34]), Emotional Empowerment (It's noted that ki users can receive energy through one cheering them on[35]. Ki users can be greatly increased by their emotions and beliefs, Son Goku explains that Son Gohan needs to remember the time he fought Cell and bring out all of the power he has, this way he can lose to no one[36] where it's shown during the Cell beam clash that he was holding back greatly out of fear of destroying the earth but from being cheered on and using all of his power within him, he was able to overpower Cell[37]), Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent[38]. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan[39], Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb[40], Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice[41], Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta[42], Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza[43], and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them[44]), Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever[45]), Penetration Damage (Bladed Penetration; Ki users can conjure up a circle of chi that is sharp and can cut through enemies far more powerful then themselves[46][47], along with this they can conjure ki as a means to stab through an opponent[48]), Weapon Creation (Ki users can create energy weapons out of their attacks[49]), Power Absorption & Energy Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others[50]), Attack Nullification (Those with ki can nullify attacks of lesser ki with their ki alone[51][52]. They can also catch and nullify ki attacks around their level through focusing enough[53]), Power Nullification (Through having greater ki, one can nullify the powers done through ki attacks, such as Frieza being able to nullify a hakai ball[54], which fully destroys a target[55], though he is unable to resist a hakai ball from Toppo due to him being stronger[56], this ability however only works on ki, attacks unrelated, characters cannot resist through being stronger, such as how Vegeta, Krillin, & Son Gohan are unable to resist Guldo's psychic powers[57], along with even the likes of Son Goku[58]), Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves[59]. These forcefields can be expanded[60], and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user[61]), Super Armor (Through releasing one's ki, they enter a state known as "Hyper Mode"[62], in this state they do not flinch from weak melee attacks), Self-Destruction (Ki users in Dragon Ball are able to[63] release all of the energy within them[64] to cause a massive[65] self-destruction of energy that normally kills the user and turns them into dust[66] though one can control it to surviving but having no stamina or energy left[67]), Binding (Energy Binding; Ki Users can use their ki to bind targets to objects, making them unable to escape even if they're of equal power[68], however, those stronger than the ki user can easily break out of it[69]), Dreaming Existence (Characters in Shin Budokai have shown to create physical bodies in alternate timelines through dreaming[70]), Non-Standard Interaction (Intangible Interaction; Those with ki can block intangible attacks when they focus and notices them[71]. Space-Time Interaction (3+1-D); Characters can blast space-time distortions to close them[72]), Healing (Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso[73], it can also heal from near death[74]), Resurrection (Resurrection of the Deceased (Limited); Ki users can resurrect ones heart from death if their ki beams hit their heart, restarting it[75]. Resurrection from Exhaustion; Can heal downed allies to give them ki back, reviving them[76]), Intimidation & Spirit Manipulation (Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce[77], along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed[78], exerting fear[79] into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their[80] body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power[81]), Link Manipulation & Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training[82]), Vibration Manipulation (Seismic Vibration Manipulation; Ki users can transfer their ki into an object and cause it to vibrate and shake greatly[83]. Powerful ki users can cause the very ground itself to shake when they power up[84]), Electricity Manipulation (Powerful Ki users can generate electricity around their aura that can outright electrocute their opponents[85], Goku and Piccolo Jr. showcased being able to utilize their aura as pure electricity during their clash[86]), Weather Manipulation (Powerful Ki users can generate entire storms through merely powering up alone, Nappa used this in order to conjure the electricity from the storm[87]. Goku showcases this when he first turns super saiyan, causing a massive lightning storm in the background[88]), Energy Manipulation (Ki is the latent power in one's body, this latent power allows them to form and create energy from controlling their ki, which can be used to shoot out energy blast[89]), Explosion Manipulation (Ki attacks can create massive explosions[90], or control the ki to set off a huge explosion under the enemy[91], or in front of them[92]), Heat Manipulation (Ki user's ki attacks produce heat allowing them to cook and grill animals and raw meat[93][94], along with leaving behind steam after the attacks hit an area, showing its latent heat. Ki users electricity aura can burn objects that touch it[95]), Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light[96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104], Degisu seeing ki attacks be fired notes that the characters are "firing light from their hands"[105]).

Limited Resistance to Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides[106]), Resistance to Poison Manipulation (Can resist poisons through Forcefield Creation[107])

Equipment

Weapons

Vehicles

  • Jet Squirrel: A flying jet scooter that Yamcha used to traverse the wasteland.
  • Mighty Mouse: A small little buggy that doubles as Yamcha’s favorite car, which he’s owned his entire life.
  • Silverstar 4: Yamcha’s hover car.

Items

  • Guard Capsule: A battle capsule that Yamcha stole during his time as a bandit, that grants him higher defensive strength.
  • Power Capsule: A battle capsule that Yamcha stole during his time as a bandit, that grants him higher offensive strength.
  • Speed Capsule: A battle capsule that Yamcha stole during his time as a bandit, that grants him higher speed.
  • Power Level Capsule: A battle capsule that Yamcha stole during his time as a bandit, that will raise his power level an unknown amount; effectively raising all of his stats..
  • Senzu Bean: A mystical bean that the Z Fighters always make sure to keep with them. It instantly eliminates fatigue, restores stamina and Ki, recovers their physical health, and is so nourishing that it keeps them full for the next ten days.

Notable Techniques

  • Flight: With a mastery of Ki control, Yamcha is able to fly at incredibly high speeds.
  • Ki Blast: Using Ki, Yamcha can concentrate it into a ball that he uses as a projectile attack.
  • Ki Sense: Yamcha is able to detect lifeforms and power levels from far off.
  • Wolf Fang Fist: Yamcha’s most famous attack, which sees him do a barrage of claw swipes and punches, before finishing by sending the opponent hurtling with a palm strike and a howl.
    • Blinding Wolf Fang Fist: Yamcha charges at the foe and kicks them high into the air, before charging power in his palms and rushing at them and blasting right through them.
    • Neo Wolf Fang Fist: A much more powerful version of the Wolf Fang Fist, which is amplified in power by his Ki.
  • Kamehameha: The iconic move coined by Master Roshi, which Yamcha has adopted for himself. This starts as a blue Ki ball, which is charged in Yamcha’s hands before releasing as an incredibly powerful beam.
    • Super Kamehameha: This is an amplified version of the Kamehameha which has a larger and more devastating beam, which Yamcha uses by first bolstering his Ki.
  • Spirit Ball: One of Yamcha’s original attacks, which has him hold out his hand facing upwards and form a large yellow Ki ball within it. He then launches this at the enemy, and can control its trajectory completely with the movement of his hands.
    • Super Spirit Ball: Called an “Extra Large Spirit Ball” by Yamcha himself, this is simply a larger and more powerful version of the original, which he uses when his Ki is bolstered.
  • Fusion Dance: This is a technique that Yamcha learned, which allows him to temporarily fuse bodies with another who performs the dance. Usually he does this with Tien.

Other

Standard Tactics: Originally as a bandit Yamcha favored more sly attacks such as attacking with weapons from afar and if he had to fight up close, using his wolf fang fist and sword. Currently, Yamcha will employ hand to hand combat along with ki attacks.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[127].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.
