Background

Clown Man is a mischievous Robot Master from Mega Man 8. He was originally a robot designed for an amusement park, but he was stolen, reprogrammed, and remodeled for combat by Dr. Wily, gaining the ability to telescopically extend his arms and channel high-voltage electricity through them as part of his Special Weapon, the Thunder Claw. The leftover parts used on his modification were later used by Wily to help create Frost Man. Clown Man can also temporarily surround his body in a ball of electricity and bounce around in fast and erratic patterns for a unique attack called the Thunder Carnival. His weakness is Tengu Man's Tornado Hold, which can knock him out of the air during his flying trapeze swing and leave him tangled up in his own arms on the ground for a few seconds before he's able to recover.

Clown Man made his base in an amusement park somewhere in the east of Australia. Despite his mischievous, silly nature, he is a good sportsman. He is also highly emotional, being prone to bouts of disliking everything and everyone around him. Clown Man is highly skilled on the flying trapeze and incorporates this into his attack strategy in an attempt to collide with his foes.

  • Thunder Claw: Thunder Claw is Clown Man's Special Weapon from Mega Man 8. When equipped, Clown Man launches an "elastic" beam of electricity that can not only attack, but is tensile enough to swing from certain hooks. This is Grenade Man's weakness, and it can reflect Grenade Man's bombs back at him, but it is risky. It's also effective against the Green Devil when its eye is exposed.

Standard Tactics: Clown Man will swing around and attack his opponent, if he grabs his opponent he will eletrocute them with his thunder claw, he will also turn into a ball of electricity to do thunder carnival.

Weaknesses: Has a weakness to Tengu Man's tornado hold. If his data is corrupted, he will be incapable of coming back.

Trivia

  • Clown Man and Tengu Man are the only Robot Masters to trash-talk the player in Mega Man 8 if they score a hit. In his case, Clown Man calls Mega Man a "wimp" for falling to his Thunder Claw.
  • During Capcom's boss character contest for Mega Man 8, Clown Man was one of three robots created using a pre-made design template supplied to fans, along with Search Man and Sword Man. Clown Man's template was known as "Long Arm Robot".
  • The North American Mega Man 8 manual states that Clown Man was originally a robot used on a science fiction TV show that Wily rescued after its cancellation. Made of old sets and props, Clown Man displays the charisma of show business. As Dr. Wily can't stop laughing at his long arms, Clown Man became especially proud of them due to never getting a laugh while on the show.
  • The basis for the Thunder Claw may be the joy buzzer, a handheld device used to generate a harmless but surprising shock during a handshake.
  • Although ColorMan.EXE and CircusMan.EXE have some similarities with Clown Man, neither one is considered his NetNavi counterpart. However, his original concept, shown during the credits of Mega Man 8, did show him standing on a giant ball.
  • Clown Man is one of two entertainer-themed Robot Masters, the other being Magic Man from Mega Man & Bass. Interestingly enough, both are weak to Tengu Man's respective weapons (Tornado Hold and Tengu Blade).
  • His quote, "See you in my dreams," could be a reference to Stephen King's It. In a scene where the character Eddie takes a shower, Pennywise the Dancing Clown comes out from the water drain to terrorize him, and before leaving, he says, "See you in your dreams."
  • He has the longest stun time from his weakness being used on him of any Robot Master in Mega Man 8, taking around six seconds to recover. Most of the others take four or five seconds, while Grenade Man can't be stunned at all.

    A. I take it you’d like to know if Wily and Cossack’s robots possess “sentience”? Naturally, they each have a “consciousness”, although the level of every “cognitive circuit” embedded inside each one of them varies, producing as many different “personality” types as found in people… Just like you or I, they can speak, and have emotional responses like shyness, or anger, just as we do.
    Regarding their energy systems, many of them do utilize “solar energy” in some way.

    Dr. Wily has reformed, and he and Dr. Right have joined forces, working together to develop a giant peace-keeping robot named “GAMMA”.
    “GAMMA”…… It was the life-long dream of Dr. Right, a giant robot to protect and serve world peace.
    Their research almost complete, all that remained was to combine 8 energy elements that were scattered about the uncharted planets, and bestow them to “GAMMA”…
