~ Tengu Man

Background

Tengu Man is a Robot Master from Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass. Originally built as an experimental robot that can generate artificial typhoons, he was modified into a combat robot by Dr. Wily. He is modeled after the Tengu, a Japanese yōkai.

Tengu Man is equipped with a razor-winged jet engine on his back that grants him high-speed flight, a retractable triple-bladed fan weapon (also known as a ha-uchiwa) on his arm, and the ability to summon cutting blades of air and whirlwinds with Tornado Hold to trap and blow his opponents to their doom. He is one of the few Robot Masters to grant two different Special Weapons on separate occasions.

Tengu Man has an independent spirit and is very proud of his large nose. He is good at reading the atmosphere, and he enjoys fly fishing in his spare time. He is a bold fighter, but he is noticeably arrogant and overconfident, and he finds the idea of social ties ridiculous.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Tengu Man’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Mega Man 8
Tengu Man is one of the first four bosses, and is stationed within a high mountain range in Japan. Mega Man defeats him and obtains Tornado Hold and one sample of the Evil Energy. His weakness is Ice Wave, which freezes his feet, keeping him in place for a few seconds and allowing the player to follow up with another attack while he is stuck.

Mega Man & Bass
Tengu Man is a member of King's army. His stage is one of the two stages unlocked by defeating Ground Man. When defeated, the player obtains the Tengu Blade. He is weak to Spread Drill, which causes him to fall to the ground when hit.

Codex Statistics

Grade: A

Tier: At most High 6-A, Higher with Rage Power

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: At most Multi-Continent level (Potency) (Fought against and harmed Mega Man, who was able to fight on par with beings such as Duo, whose fight with Evil Robot caused a cloud explosion on Jupiter which was at this level), Higher with Rage Power (When Robot Masters are damaged to about half their health, they become invulnerable for a few seconds and perform more powerful attacks)

Durability: At most Multi-Continent level (Can take hits from Mega Man)

Striking Strength: At most Multi-Continent Class (Potency), Higher with Rage Power

Lifting Strength: Class G (The Robot Masters are normally made to be on par or superior to Mega Man, who was able to hold up Dr. Wily's fortress at end of Mega Man 5, with Robot Masters such as Guts Man being superior in strength and Robot Masters such as Splash Woman having comparable feats such as lifting entire ships from the ocean)

Travel Speed: Massively Hypersonic (Can move this fast compared to Mega Man, who can keep up with Duo, who can travel around the earth destroying evil energy around this timeframe), Faster Than Light with Teleporters (Robot Masters teleporters should scale to Mega Man and Proto Man’s teleportation, where they are able to travel planets and solar systems in a short time frame[1], reaching this levels of speed)

Attack Speed: Massively Hypersonic (Can keep up with Mega Man, who can keep up with Duo in combat who uses attacks that involve his travel speed)

Reaction Speed: Massively Hypersonic Can keep up with Mega Man, who can keep up with Duo in combat who uses attacks that involve his travel speed)

Range: Standard Melee, Dozens of Meters with Air Manipulation (Can throw air cyclones that go this high), Interplanetary with Teleporters (All robot masters naturally display teleportation through teleporters interplanetary distances[6])

Intelligence: Gifted (Can keep up with Mega Man in combat)

Powers and Techniques

Flight (Can fly due to his build in jets), Air Manipulation (Initially designed to create artificial typhoons, releases a fan like blade that causes a massive windstorm that traps the enemy allowing Tengu Man to kick them back down to the ground).

Resistance to Electricity Manipulation (Takes virtually no damage from thunder claw. Takes virtually no damage from lightning bolt), Heat Manipulation & Fire Manipulation (Takes virtually no damage from wave burner), Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (Takes virtually no damage from ice wall)

Equipment

  • Tengu Blade: Large Tengu Blades he throws, they can turn into wind blades, his other tengu blade once hitting the floor makes a vacuum.

Notable Techniques

  • Tornado Hold: Tornado Hold is Tengu Man's Special Weapon in Mega Man 8. The weapon drops a fan on the ground that creates a tornado that can trap and (in some cases) damage enemies. Clown Man is particularly weak to this weapon, as it causes his long arms to become tangled up, rendering him helpless. Tengu Man can also use this to levitate to some areas or as an actual barrier against enemy projectiles.
  • Tengu Blade: Tengu Blade is Tengu Man's Special Weapon in Mega Man & Bass. It is a multitasking sword weapon that can send out a projectile as well as being used as a slashing weapon. Tengu Blades can bounce off any walls that get in their way, and can also be used as a dashing weapon (similar to the Charge Kick from Mega Man 5 or the Break Dash from Mega Man V) by sliding or dashing with the weapon equipped.

Other

Standard Tactics: Tengu Man flies around throwing wind attaks and wind blades.

Weaknesses: If his data is corrupted, he will be incapable of coming back.

Trivia

Tengu Man bust
Tengu Man bust
  • Tengu Man and Frost Man appear in Mega Man 8's options screen with the volume and sound effects.
  • Tengu Man is one of four Robot Masters to give Mega Man two different weapons in different games. The other three are Astro Man, Centaur Man, and Pharaoh Man.
    • Thanks to his two appearances, Tengu Man has both an air-themed weapon (Tornado Hold) and a cutter-themed weapon (Tengu Blade).
    • Both of the Robot Masters that are weak to his weapon are based on entertainers, with one based on a clown and the other based on a magician.
  • In Mega Man & Bass, Tengu Man still uses the Tornado Hold in battle, but instead of sending the player skyward for him to kick down, the weapon catches the player and tries to dump him off the edge of the platform to his death.
  • Tengu Man is the second Robot Master based on a mythological creature (the first was Centaur Man).
  • Yama arashi”, or "oroshi", meaning “mountain storm”, refers to the phenomenon of dangerous katabatic downwinds accelerated by air currents meeting rolling mountain slopes that can push out hurricane-force gales.
  • Tornado Hold seems to take inspiration from the feather fans (羽団扇 ha-uchiwa) that tengu use to create gusts of wind, while the Tengu Blade more closely resembles Japanese war fans, specifically the tessen.
  • Tengu Man has different stage themes in the Saturn and PlayStation versions of Mega Man 8. With his theme from Mega Man & Bass, he's the only classic series Robot Master to have three official stage themes.
  • Tengu Man is the only Robot Master in Mega Man 8 (besides Cut Man) who takes 2 units of damage from a Mega Buster shot and 4 units from a fully-charged Mega Buster shot.
  • In his Mega Man 8 artwork and the Mega Man & Bass CD database, Tengu Man's "cutter" is blue, but in his Mega Man & Bass artwork and sprite, it is green.
  • He is one of two Robot Masters to trash-talk the player if they score a hit in Mega Man 8, the other being Clown Man. In his case, Tengu Man says, "Eat this!" upon hitting Mega Man with his Tornado Hold and "How do you like that!?" when spiking Mega Man.
  • In Mega Man & Bass, if the player hits Tengu Man with Spread Drill while he is inside the wall during his diving attack, Tengu Man will fall inside the wall and get stuck, thus making him unable to fight back. The only ways to free Tengu Man so players can beat him are to either jump off the arena and restart the fight or restart the entire level.

Dr. Wily has reformed, and he and Dr. Right have joined forces, working together to develop a giant peace-keeping robot named “GAMMA”.
“GAMMA”…… It was the life-long dream of Dr. Right, a giant robot to protect and serve world peace.
Their research almost complete, all that remained was to combine 8 energy elements that were scattered about the uncharted planets, and bestow them to “GAMMA”…
–However, each planet met with an unexpected incident. The robots who were mining the energy elements suddenly began going berserk!! Upon learning of this from Dr. Right, “ROCKMAN” immediately set out on a path for the uncharted planets–a new battle was about to begin!!
  2. Q. What kind of foods does Rockman like to eat?
    A. Well… Actually, Rockman’s body is powered by “Solar Energy.” Therefore, he doesn’t really eat, but there are some things that are okay for his consumption… Around the lab, he enjoys drinking “Energy Juice.” As responsibly as he behaves, he’s still a kid after all.
  3. Q. The shots that the Rockbuster fires from the hand, what are those exactly?
    A. The Rockbuster on the arm fires something called a “Solar Bullet”, essentially emitting a compressed form of solar energy that’s very powerful.
  4. Weapon: Transforming Rockbuster, fires a solar bullet
  5. Q. Do robots like those made by Dr. Wily or Dr. Cossack have self-awareness, and can they talk? And do they run on solar energy like Rockman does?
    A. I take it you’d like to know if Wily and Cossack’s robots possess “sentience”? Naturally, they each have a “consciousness”, although the level of every “cognitive circuit” embedded inside each one of them varies, producing as many different “personality” types as found in people… Just like you or I, they can speak, and have emotional responses like shyness, or anger, just as we do.
Regarding their energy systems, many of them do utilize “solar energy” in some way.
