Nail

From The Codex

Background

Nail is a Namekian described as the 'lone' Warrior-type Namekian left when he first appeared in the manga. He is the personal bodyguard to Grand Elder Guru, and is incredibly strong for a Namekian. In fact, he was the most powerful Namekian alive at the time of Frieza's attack on Namek. He would later fuse with Piccolo, meaning he would continue to hold the title of the most powerful Namekian, as he was part of Piccolo's immense strength.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Nail’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Frieza Saga
When Dende takes Krillin to Guru's home to get his inner powers unlocked, Nail is there, who greets the two of them, but is cautious of Krillin's presence. Later on, while Gohan is getting his hidden powers unlocked by Guru, Vegeta arrives to collect a missing Dragon Ball. Nail confronts him and is ready to fight, with both of them insulting each other harshly. Gohan emerges with his newly unlocked powers before Nail and Vegeta had the opportunity to battle. Nail then senses five high power levels, which turn out to be those of the Ginyu Force. Guru orders Nail to go help the earthlings combat the Ginyu Force. Nail originally complies, and flies off to assist the earthlings and Vegeta, but before he arrives, he turns back to continue assisting Guru, and to protect him from Frieza, who came to know what is needed to say to make the Namekian Dragon rise from the Dragon Balls. Nail distracts Frieza and battles him in order to stop him from killing Guru, and from obtaining the secret password needed to activate the Dragon Balls for immortality. Due to Frieza having a minimum power level of 530,000, which is roughly twelve times that of Nail's, Nail is no match for the tyrant and loses an arm (which he regenerates) during the brutal battle. Frieza toys with Nail, and threatens to torture Guru, while insisting that Nail must divulge the password needed to summon the Namekian Dragon, Porunga. Before Frieza deals the final blow to Nail, Nail lets out a small smirk, and reveals that this fight was only a diversion to delay Frieza, so that Dende could get the Namekian Dragon Balls' password to the Earthlings. Enraged, Frieza immediately departs at full speed, leaving Nail to slowly die, broken and beaten.

Shortly afterward, thanks to the Namekian Dragon Balls, a newly resurrected Piccolo arrives on the planet and discovers the battered Namekian. Nail tells Piccolo that if Piccolo and Kami were one once, they would have beaten Frieza long ago. Nail asks Piccolo to fuse with him in order to increase his chances against Frieza, and at the same time save his life. Piccolo eventually agrees, after some questioning of Nail's motives, wondering if his personality will still be the same, to which Nail assures Piccolo his personality will not change, and he will still retain control. After they fuse, Piccolo's power level increases dramatically to the point of being even with that of Frieza's second form, and possibly even stronger (since Frieza made the decision to use his second transformation immediately after Piccolo removed his heavily weighted clothing).

In the English dub of the anime, when Piccolo fought second form Frieza, Piccolo revealed to Frieza that the two had fused while using Nail's voice. Later, When Vegeta found out about Dende's healing ability, he asked Krillin to inflict him to gain a Zenkai boost, Dende was hesitant to heal Vegeta until Piccolo told him to while using Nail's voice. When Dende is killed by Frieza in his final form, Nail was shocked and saddened as Piccolo's thoughts. After everyone on Namek was brought back to life and transported to Earth, Dende finally realized that Nail had merged with Piccolo.

Cell Saga
Nail remained a part of Piccolo's being. Nail was heard via Piccolo's telepathic thoughts when Dende returned to Earth as its new Guardian of Earth during Cell's reign.

Majin Buu Saga
Nail remained a part of Piccolo's being. Nail is later seen in Piccolo's flashback to Dende describing fusion during Majin Buu's reign.

Codex Statistics

Grade: B (Nail is the lone true warrior of the namekians)

Grade: B

Tier: 7-A

Attack Potency: Metropolis level (Has a power level of 42,000, making him far above the likes of Nappa who casually destroyed a city and stood within the blast without having any damage, and Raditz who can cause explosions dwarfing the mountains, which results in these levels of energy)

Durability: Metropolis level, Higher with Guard Up (Ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard), Lower with Ki Control (Higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them)

Striking Strength: Metropolis Class

Lifting Strength: At least Class 1 (Superior to Saiyan Saga Goku, who before training with King Kai is able to barely move around and jump in gravity that multiplies his weight by ten times, where he's naturally 62 kg, thus making him 620 kg on King Kai's planet, and after training with King Kai, he is able to move around naturally in ten times gravity)

Intelligence: Genius Intelligence (Nail is planet namek's lone warrior, being the strongest nad most skilled warrior amongst them)

Powers and Techniques

Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (All beings in Dragon Ball[10][11][12] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[13], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[14] block attacks that would otherwise[15] kill them from[16] raising their guard[17], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[18]), Aura (Projection; A users ki aura can exert itself[19] as a weapon to attack[20]. Explosive; Ki users through powering up can form an entire aura around themself, radiating their immense power[21], where depending on their immense strength, can cause them to explode their aura outwards to remove excess ki from themself[22]. Mood Reflection; Goku and Piccolo Jr. with their auras and their stern concentration on each other reflected in their electric auras, even shooting electricity at each other[23]), Emotional Empowerment (It's noted that ki users can receive energy through one cheering them on[24]. Ki users can be greatly increased by their emotions and beliefs, Son Goku explains that Son Gohan needs to remember the time he fought Cell and bring out all of the power he has, this way he can lose to no one[25] where it's shown during the Cell beam clash that he was holding back greatly out of fear of destroying the earth but from being cheered on and using all of his power within him, he was able to overpower Cell[26]), Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent[27]. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan[28], Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb[29], Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice[30], Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta[31], Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza[32], and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them[33]), Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever[34]), Penetration Damage (Bladed Penetration; Ki users can conjure up a circle of chi that is sharp and can cut through enemies far more powerful then themselves[35][36], along with this they can conjure ki as a means to stab through an opponent[37]), Weapon Creation (Ki users can create energy weapons out of their attacks[38]), Power Absorption & Energy Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others[39]), Attack Nullification (Ki Energy Based; Those with ki can nullify attacks of lesser ki with their ki alone[40][41]. They can also catch and nullify ki attacks around their level through focusing enough[42]), Power Nullification (Ki Energy Based; Through having greater ki, one can nullify the powers done through ki attacks, such as Frieza being able to nullify a hakai ball[43], which fully destroys a target[44], though he is unable to resist a hakai ball from Toppo due to him being stronger[45], this ability however only works on ki, attacks unrelated, characters cannot resist through being stronger, such as how Vegeta, Krillin, & Son Gohan are unable to resist Guldo's psychic powers[46], along with even the likes of Son Goku[47]), Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves[48]. These forcefields can be expanded[49], and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user[50]), Super Armor (Through releasing one's ki, they enter a state known as "Hyper Mode"[51], in this state they do not flinch from weak melee attacks[52]), Self-Destruction (Ki users in Dragon Ball are able to[53] release all of the energy within them[54] to cause a massive[55] self-destruction of energy that normally kills the user and turns them into dust[56] though one can control it to surviving but having no stamina or energy left[57]), Binding (Energy Binding; Ki Users can use their ki to bind targets to objects, making them unable to escape even if they're of equal power[58], however, those stronger than the ki user can easily break out of it[59]), Dreaming Existence (Characters in Shin Budokai have shown to create physical bodies in alternate timelines through dreaming[60]), Non-Standard Interaction (Intangible Interaction; Those with ki can block intangible attacks when they focus and notices them[61]. Space-Time Interaction (3+1-D); Characters can blast space-time distortions to close them[62]), Healing (Healing Singular Targets, Advanced Healing; Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso[63], it can also heal from near death[64]), Resurrection (Resurrection of the Deceased (Limited); Ki users can resurrect ones heart from death if their ki beams hit their heart, restarting it[65]. Resurrection from Exhaustion; Can heal downed allies to give them ki back, reviving them[66]), Intimidation & Spirit Manipulation (Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce[67], along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed[68], exerting fear[69] into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their[70] body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power[71]), Link Manipulation & Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training[72]), Vibration Manipulation (Seismic Vibration Manipulation; Ki users can transfer their ki into an object and cause it to vibrate and shake greatly[73]. Powerful ki users can cause the very ground itself to shake when they power up[74]), Electricity Manipulation (Powerful Ki users can generate electricity around their aura that can outright electrocute their opponents[75], Goku and Piccolo Jr. showcased being able to utilize their aura as pure electricity during their clash[76]), Weather Manipulation (Powerful Ki users can generate entire storms through merely powering up alone, Nappa used this in order to conjure the electricity from the storm[77]. Goku showcases this when he first turns super saiyan, causing a massive lightning storm in the background[78]), Energy Manipulation (Ki is the latent power in one's body, this latent power allows them to form and create energy from controlling their ki, which can be used to shoot out energy blast[79]), Explosion Manipulation (Ki attacks can create massive explosions[80], or control the ki to set off a huge explosion under the enemy[81], or in front of them[82]), Heat Manipulation (Ki user's ki attacks produce heat allowing them to cook and grill animals and raw meat[83][84], along with leaving behind steam after the attacks hit an area, showing its latent heat. Ki users electricity aura can burn objects that touch it[85]), Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light[86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94], Degisu seeing ki attacks be fired notes that the characters are "firing light from their hands"[95]).

Limited Resistance to Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides[96]), Resistance to Poison Manipulation (Can resist poisons through Forcefield Creation[97])

Equipment

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

  • Flight: The ability to fly with the use of ki.
  • Ki Sense: The ability to sense ki energy. Nail is able to also sense if the energy is good or evil.
  • Ki Blast: The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Please Leave: While shouting "I won't show mercy!", Nail charges at the opponent with his right arm raised. He then swings his arm forward to hand chop the opponent in their neck, inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Mystic Flasher: Nail turns around and blasts the opponent with a massive yellow energy wave, inflicting a great amount of damage.
  • Regeneration: The ability to regrow certain body parts or cells that have been dismembered or destroyed and replace them with brand new cells, or simply regrouping all of their separated parts back together.
  • Namekian Fusion: It is more of an assimilation than fusion, as one Namekian absorbs the energy, strength, memories, and intelligence or thought pattern of another. Both participants must willingly consent to fuse in this manner and usually the pair agrees to the stronger of the two to serve their body as the host; the reason for this consent is that the body of the absorbed Namekian disappears during this fusion and the consciousness ceases to exist as a body. The agreed host places his hand over the chest of the other one and through unknown thoughts, a flash merges them. After the fusion, the non-host's consciousness lives inside the body of the host from this point onwards and their life span as a body ends. The host's consciousness dominates the body, while the non-host serves to aid him by supplying information, thereby meaning that the absorbed consciousness remains separate from the host's.

Other

Standard Tactics: Nail will employ hand to hand techniques along with ki attacks.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[100].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.

Trivia

  • Nail's name is a pun on the word "snail".
  • There are parts of Nail's clothing that are torn when fighting Frieza which are not present when Piccolo arrives on the site of the battle in both the manga and anime, although Nail is clearly grievously injured as before and had no time to recuperate.
  • Even though, prior to their fusion, Piccolo says to Nail that once they will finish with Frieza they will split up, he is actually never shown doing so on-screen. Piccolo later reveals to Goku that once two Namekians fuse, they can never separate again.
    • It is likely that before his fusion with Nail, Piccolo was unaware that Namekian fusion was permanent and/or assumed that he could use fission to remove Nail like the Nameless Namekian did to remove the evil from himself that spawned King Piccolo. Presumably, Piccolo only discovered that defusing was impossible only after he had fused with Nail.
    • In World Mission, a game world anomaly is shown to be strong enough to undo Namekian fusion which Great Saiyaman 3 notes should be impossible under normal circumstances and that it must be some anomaly to be able to reverse Piccolo's fusion with Kami and Nail.
    • During the battle with Moro, Vegeta reveals he learned a technique that could separate Piccolo from his fusees, something that shock Piccolo.
  • In the original Funimation dub, Nail has a soft, raspy voice. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, he has a deeper voice.
  • In all the games that he appears playable (except Gekishin Freeza), Nail is missing his vest (although he has it on outside of battle at Guru's House in Xenoverse 2), the reason of it remains unknown, though presumably this is a reference to the fact he removed it during his fight with Frieza. Interestingly, the vest has never been featured as a playable alternate costume for Nail.
    • In Dragon Ball Fusions, if the top portion of Nail's Outfit is worn by a Female Tekka of any race, it will feature the addition of a sports bra-like halter top to cover their chest.
