And from the ancient times, the 4 pillars that guard the castle-----Medusa, Frankenstein, Mummy and Giant Bat
~ Excerpt from Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku explaining the four pillars that guard Dracula's Castle

Background

The Giant Bat is a recurring boss in the Castlevania series. As a massive bat symbolically tied to vampires, it instills fear in all who encounter it. It is notable for being the very first boss to appear in the series.

He serves as one of the four pillars that guard Dracula's Castle from many hunters that enter.

In most games, the Giant Bat is portrayed as being composed of a swarm of smaller bats. In Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, it is revealed that this creature is one of the three core components of Dracula's power, alongside the Flame Demon and the Succubus. Dracula himself often takes the form of a giant bat or a swarm of bats during many of his encounters.

The Giant Bat has appeared under various names and forms throughout the series, including:

  • Phantom Bat
  • Zapf Bat: A bat composed of treasure.
  • Darkwing Bat: A bat specializing in wind-based attacks.
  • Bat Company: A swarm of bats that can merge to form various shapes.
  • Twin Bats: Two giant bats working together.

Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[35], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[36]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[37]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[38]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[39]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[40]. With their souls being completely free from time[41]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[42]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[43]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[44], becoming stronger when it's night time[45]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[46] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[47]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[48]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[49]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos, [50] where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[51], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[52]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[53]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[54]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[55]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[56]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[57]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[58]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[59], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[60], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[61], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[62]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[63]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[64]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[65]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[66]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[67]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[68]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[69]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[70], with their souls being completely free from time[71]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[72], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[73]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[74]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[75], with their souls being completely free from time[76], with fate being a truth wound by time[77])

Fusionism (Multiple smaller bats fuse together to form the giant bat[112]), Flight (Naturally flies around due to its wings[113]), Hive Mind (The Giant Bat is a flock of smaller bats all able to carry out the exact same movements and attacks to mimic the form of an actual singular entity[114]) Energy Projection & Curtain Fire (Multi-Directional; Can shoot out multiple energy rings[115]) Resurrection (The Giant Bat is one of the many bosses that requires Soma Cruz to use Magic Seals, in order to cut the monsters from the power of the gates, and makes the monsters incapable of[116], reviving and regaining some health back infinitely[117])

Equipment

  • Bats: Giant Bat is normally made up of a company of bats all merging into one being.
  • Gold: Specifically for its Super Castlevania IV self, it is made up of gold and takes form from that.

Notable Techniques

  • Fireball: Many of the Giant Bats shoot out fireballs, with many of them homing onto the enemy and tracking them no matter how long they dodge for.
  • Strong Winds: The Giant Bat can create a large gust of wind strong enough to push an enemy into a wall, being capable of harming some of the most powerful hunters such as Alucard.
  • Splitting: The Giant Bats very commonly split apart into smaller bats, either from taking damage or to dodge enemy attacks. Sometimes it is used to attack enemies too.
  • Merging: The Giant Bat is normally the result of multiple smaller bats merging into the giant bat.
  • Drill Attack: The Giant Bat tucks its body in and spins at fast speeds, slamming into the ground like a drill.

Other

Standard Tactics:

  • Dracula's Curse: The Giant Bat will fly towards the enemy and attempt to ram into them, if attacked, it will split into smaller bats and proceed to keep trying to ram into the opponent.

  • The Adventure Rebirth: The Giant Bat is formed from a group of small bats as it flies around and attempts to ram into the opponent, splitting into its smaller bats to avoid attacks.

  • Order of Shadows: Both of the bats fly around, sharing a linked bond, they will shoot out fireballs while also trying to dive and ram into the opponent.
  • Castlevania (NES): The Giant Bat will fly around and ram into its opponent.
  • Super Castlevania IV: The Giant Bat forms from gold and flies around, if the enemy attacks it, pieces of its gold will fly out and hit the enemy, damaging them. It will also attempt to ram into its enemy. When it takes enough damage, it splits into three smaller bats and attempts the same strategy.
  • Castlevnaia Chronicles: Multiple smaller bats form into the Giant Bat and split apart as they attack the enemy while also shooting out a fire breath.

  • Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance: An entire room of bats fuse into the Giant Bat, as it flies around, shooting out fire breaths and attemping to spin its body at fast speeds and drill into its opponent. It also splits into smaller bats to avoid attacks.
  • Dracula X Games
    • Rondo of Blood: Giant Bat will fly around and shoot out fireballs that home in on the target, it will also occasionally turning its wings into a drill and slam into the ground at the opponent.
    • Dracula X: Multiple smaller bats fly together to form the Giant Bat, it will proceed to break into the smaller bats and fly in patterns to attack the opponent.
    • The Dracula X Chronicles: Giant Bat borrows the multiple smaller bats forming it, along with the tactics from Rondo of Blood.
  • Symphony of the Night: Giant Bat will fly around and create massive gusts of wind that pushes the opponent into the wall at the far side, this has been shown effective in harming the likes of Alucard.

  • Dawn of Sorrow: The Giant Bat is a large flock of red small bats all working in conjunction to give imitate the actions of a singular entity. They will spread apart to avoid attacks, form a hand to try and crush the opponent, attempt to ram into the opponent, and shoot out multiple energy rings.
  • Grimoire of Souls
    • Giant Thunder Bat: The Giant Bat is fused together from smaller bats, it will spin at fast speeds and slam into the ground like a drill, eletrocuting the entire ground, it will form electricity around itself as it rams into opponents, and for its ultimate attack it will form itself into an electrical ball that pulls in all nearby bats and start shooting out bolts of electricity.

Weaknesses

Trivia

  • The Giant Bat is the very first boss to appear in any Castlevania game.
  • The English instruction booklet of Castlevania confounded and switched the artworks between the Bat enemy and the Phantom Bat boss as they appear in the original Japanese Famicom Disk System version of the game.
  • In Super Castlevania IV, this monster is called "Zapf Bat". The reason for this name is a mystery, although it could be related to Zapf Dingbats, a type of Wingdings font.
  • In Castlevania: Dracula X, this monster is called "Myotia". Myotis are a diverse and widespread genus of bats within the family Vespertilionidae, which are colloquially known as "mouse-eared bats".
    • The Myotis myotis is a European species of these types of bats, colloquially known as the "greater mouse-eared bat".
  • In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, this monster is called "Bat Company". This is probably a reference to English rock band Bad Company, which was prominent during the 1970s and early 1980s. This is further supported as many characters from several other classic Konami franchises are also named after famous rock musicians and bands.
    • The name could also be a reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable, where the character Keicho Nijimura has a Stand called "Bad Company", which is comprised of multiple military units that act as and are considered to be a single entity. And just like Bad Company, Bat Company is comprised of many small bats working together as a single unit to deal damage and only take damage when they're combined into a single form.

However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.
