I wish it hadn't come to this, either. That feeling of being on the verge of death is something I'd like to wipe from my memory. People may say I'm Dracula's reincarnation, but the real me is just a normal human being. Even so, I understand when the time comes for me to fight. I want to protect the world. It's where Mina and I have spent our entrie lives. That's why we must crush Death's plans. And if the power of dominance is the only way to do that...then, so be it.
~ Soma's Grimoire Memory to Alucard

Background

Soma Cruz is the reincarnation of the Dark Lord, Count Dracula and the main protagonist of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow respectively. Nearly 18 years had passed since Count Dracula’s final defeat at the hands of Julius Belmont, and his powers were sealed away forevermore by the Vampire Killer. With nothing left to do, Dracula reincarnated into a new body with the same powers, but no memories of his past.

18 more years passed since then, and the young adult Soma Cruz went to witness the lunar eclipse alongside his best friend and potential romantic partner, Mina Hakuba. However, as soon as the eclipse occurred, Dracula’s Castle was erected and the two were pulled into it.

Soma immediately woke up in the castle and was greeted by a man named Genya Arikado, who was actually the legendary son of Dracula, Alucard. Arikado explained that they were in Dracula’s Castle, just before a monster attacked Soma. After defeating the monster, Soma unwillingly absorbed its soul, much to his surprise.

Arikado would explain that this is the Power of Dominance, an ability used only by the Dark Lord. Soma was confused as to what this could mean, but fought through the castle to find answers nonetheless. Eventually, he ran into a man named Graham Jones, who believed himself to be the reincarnation of Dracula and would stop at nothing to prove such. He also met a mysterious man known only as J, who was drawn to the castle but had not a single memory about who he was.

As Soma continued onwards, both Soma and J came to realize who they were. J recognized himself as Julius Belmont, the legendary warrior who defeated Count Dracula, whilst Soma regrettably learned that he was, in fact, Dracula’s reincarnation.

With both of these realizations met, Soma was able to defeat Graham, but came face-to-face with Julius. Julius fought Soma with plans to kill him, but realized Soma’s true intentions and stopped. Soma managed to defeat the man, and promised that he had no intention of hurting anyone.

In truth, Arikado had told Soma of the source of Dracula’s powers, the primordial being Chaos, and that Soma would only prevent his transformation into the Dark Lord if he destroyed Chaos. Because of this, Soma travelled into the Chaotic Realm, and faced down the being. Surprisingly, the boy was able to defeat it once and for all, seemingly destroying the source of his powers.

However, only a year later, a group of three powerful people confronted Soma. Celia Fortner, a powerful witch who worships Dracula, and her two lackeys, Dmitrii Blinov and Dario Bossi, two men who she plans on having become the new Dark Lord.

In order to enact her plans, Celia goes on to torment Soma time and time again, although he fights her and her lackeys off several times. However, Celia would even go as far as to create a mock-up Mina, and execute her in front of Soma, so that she may draw out his Dark Lord side.

Unfortunately for Celia, Soma was aware of her tricks and did not fall for the Fake Mina. Soma would go on to finally defeat Celia and Dario, before moving onto Dmitrii. He was a special case, as his ability was to perfectly mimic the abilities of others; which he used to mimic Soma’s Power of Dominance.

Despite how hard he tried, however, Dmitrii’s form was not able to withstand bearing the Power of Dominous, and he burst into a giant eldritch demon of pure malice and hatred. Soma used the last of his powers to finally take out the transformed Dmitrii and end Celia’s plot, once and for all.

Soma returned back to Mina Hakuba, along with newfound friends Genya Arikado, Julius Belmont, Yoko Belnades and Hammer.

A year later, Death would appear before him asking him if he was responsible for Dracula's Castle resurrecting, though Soma says he has nothing to do with that, with Death leaving him to his life. For some reason, Soma does not go to the castle.

  • Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[935] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[936])
  • Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[937]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[938])
  • Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[939])
  • Plant Manipulation (The castle can cause even the trees to attack[940]. The castle can cause the plants and leaves to form a wraith[941])
  • Forcefield Manipulation (The castle set up a barrier seal outside of it to make people unable to enter[942]. Evil energy can create barriers blocking one until they defeat all enemies[943])
  • Fire Manipulation (Can cause fire across an entire room just from causing a chandelier with candles to fall, setting everything, even people on fire[944])
  • Portal Manipulation & Battlefield Removal (Application Based; The castle can create portals that send one to another dimension, where time is stopped[945]. Brought a wandering merchant in through swallowing him into a dense fog[946]. The castle has magic energies that seal the gateway to hell[947])
  • Summoning & Glyph Creation (The Castle can summon creatures of chaos to spawn and attack whoever enters a room through enemies spawning from glyphs[948]. The castle can make glyphs that teleport one outside of the castle by standing over it[949]. A lot of these creatures are summoned from Hell[950])
  • Water Manipulation (The Casles Waters seem to be very hazardous, as it instantly kills enemies upon touching them[951])
  • Spatial Manipulation (3-D; The castle can shift the room to make it where Trevor needs to escape upwards that will instantly kill him if it reaches him[952]. The castle can make blocks disappear and re-appear, making it difficult for one to traverse around the castle[953]. The Castle made it, where the stairway Soma was walking up with Mina, went longer hen usual, trying to keep Soma from going to the Shrine and instead bringing him to the castle[954])
  • Sense Manipulation (Caused Soma's senses to dim even entering the chaotic darkness near the Castle[955])
  • Weather Manipulation & Electricity Manipulation (The Castle is the reason for a massive cloud that covered the entire sky[956]. Can conjure thunderstorms around itself that can summon enemies during it's flashes of lightning[957]. Can summon enemies through the lightning bolts it makes[958])
  • Dark Matter Manipulation (The castle contains dark matter within it that beings can use for weapon creation)
  • Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[959])
  • Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[960], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[961] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[962], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[963], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[964], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[965], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[966]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[967]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[968], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[969]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[970])
  • Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[971], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[972])
  • Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[973], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[974]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[975]).

  • The[983] Power of Dominance[984], giving him the ability to wield the abilities of monsters he's killed[985], rule over and command monsters, as Dracula hosts countless spirits within his castle, endlesslly wandering the castle[986], he has the ability to use every ability a monster that appeared in the castle has in the series, giving him:
  • Immortality (Unknown Type) & Pain Tolerance (With White Dragon[987], which are immortals immune to pain and suffering[988])
  • Penetration Damage
  • Bladed Penetration: With Axe Armor, an armored knight that wields a giant axe[991]. With Evil Sword, a sword possessed by an evil spirit, it cuts through anything and everything[992]. With Mad Diver, a zombie with long claws that travels freely underground[993]. With Skeleton Swordman, a skeleton that brandishes a broad sword[994]. With Executioner, in life, he chopped off the heads of thousands of innocent convicted men[995]. WitH Skeleton Blaze, a quick-moving, ninja-like skeleton, uses razor claws and swift footwork to confuse and then kill[996]. With Slogra, a direct subordinate of Death, his multiple lance strikes are especially strong against airborne foes[997].

    Notable Techniques

    Standard Vampire Abilities

    • Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[1194] regenerate[1195], from any kind[1196] of damage due to it absorbing blood[1197].
    • Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
    • Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
    • Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.

    Other

Standard Tactics: Soma will use one of his various souls that best suit the situation, along with one of his various armors or items.

Weaknesses: Soma’s powers are derived from Chaos despite his good nature, and thus he is very close to succumbing to evil at all times. He is incredibly hot headed and transformed into the Dark Lord upon seeing a fake Mina be killed.

    Note

    Trivia

    • The name Soma means "body" in Greek, which may refer to the fact that he can be considered as a receptacle for the souls he absorbs, and thus justify the fact that he holds the Power of Dominance. Soma also means "The nectar of immortality" in Sanskrit, which can be a hint to the fact that the soul of Dracula inside him is immortal. It is also worth mentioning that the name Soma is sometimes connected with Chandra, the Hindu moon god. His last name is somewhat of a pun, Cruz is the Spanish and Portuguese word for "cross", which is commonly used against vampires in fiction.
      • His Japanese name is Kurusu Sōma (来須 蒼真); Sōma is his given name. The kanji that compose his name mean, in order:
        • "come/next" (kuru)
        • "by all means" (su)
        • "pale/blue" ()
        • "truth/reality" (ma)
      • Taken together, the name hints that he is the true inheritor of Dracula's power and will definitely receive them. Interestingly, the kanji for "pale" is also used as a euphemism for being inexperienced or unripe. Thus, probably in Aria of Sorrow, Soma has not yet reached his full potential.
    • According to an interview made to Koji Igarashi by Nintendo Dream magazine, the name "Soma" was taken from an Indian ritual drink called soma, as well as director Junichi Murakami's son, whose name is Soma.
      • Likewise, the surname "Cruz" was chosen in part in reference to Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, who at the time had recently visited Japan[1209].
    • By 2035, Soma Cruz is living at Hakuba-chō, a town on the Nagano prefecture in Japan[1210].
    • In Nintendo Power's pre-release coverage for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, they mistakenly referred to Soma as "Sora Cruz".
    • Soma's iconic white coat makes a cameo in the game Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Referred to by the name of "Special Ops", it is one of the many body armors in the game that can be forged through weapon combining. Unfortunately, its stats leave a lot to be desired.
    • Dark Lord Soma is the only final boss to be unique to an alternate character mode.
    • Soma does not appear in the Beta version of Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody, along with Shanoa.

    Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't the characters be around Tier 2 for defeating the Time Reaper who would've destroyed the very fabric of time[1211], attempted to destroy the specific era of time[1212], cause all beings everywhere to disappear, forever[1213] and that the age was on the verge of collapse[1214]?

A: We actually never get a direct outright method of Time Reaper's plan for doing this, from what Aeon mentions to Golem, if the Time Rift is not erased, all beings everywhere will disappear, forever[1215], implying that it's the Time Rift causing this, this is further backed up by the fact that in Time Reaper's boss fight, there is a vortex in the background consuming everything[1216], meaning this is an overtime feat that scales to no one physically.

Q: Shouldn't they get tier 2 for Dracula's influence destabilizing the flow of time[1217]?

A: This is a potent ability but has nothing to do with Attack Potency, there is no quantification for "destabilizing the flow of time", along with this, even if it was taken as physically, then it would be overtime as the effects are not noticeable throughout most of Curse of Darkness. Thus this is merely potent Time Manipulation.

Q: Shouldn't Dracula and by proxy anyone that scales to him get tier 2 for him being able to sustain his castle?

A: This goes under our Stabilization Feats standards, which treats sustaining feats are non-combat applicable Attack Potency normally, though in Dracula's case the Castle is speficially powered by the existence of a Dark Lord, and doesn't necessarily need their strength to rise. In the Castlevania novel, the castle rose without a Dark Lord as an example. Along with this, no one scales to the collapse of the castle, in Curse of Darkness Hector would've died to the collapse of the castle if[1218] Julia didn't come save him, and Isaac died within the castle[1219]. In other cases the Castle does not collapse[1220], but instead slowly fades away[1221]. At the end of Dawn of Sorrow Soma Cruz and Genya Arikado (aka Alucard) must escape the collapsing abyss.

Q: Shouldn't Castlevania characters that scale to Death have Infinite speed due to Death being able to kill distance itself with his attacks?

A: Killing distance to attack is not a speed feat, it's a method of Spatial Manipulation by circumventing and ignoring distance, while one can say the attack spawns on you instantly, this is not really something quantifiable. Along with this, it would only scale to characters comparable to Death during post-Dawn of Sorrow, as Soma notes Death is far faster than he remembered from his fight with him in Dawn of Sorrow[1222].

    140. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
      “……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
      Kill the distance-----
      Kill the sound-----
      Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
      “……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.
The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood."

When he can no longer see her, he suddenly sharpened his vision and turned around to see darkness forming behind him.
“……Hey? What do you want from me? You seemed to be sneaking around for a while.”
He noticed that he was being observed by something since a while ago.
And he saw that it was probably not human.

He only sees himself as an ordinary Japanese living an ordinary life. But he has seen all types of monsters and can surely attest that they exist.

A spectacled vampire hunter confirmed this as his duty.
In front of him is a [grotesque creature] whose dreadful power can be felt. The creature appears human but the instant he looked at it, all of his body’s cells cried out in terror.
“The timing is bad, church person.”

Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it. Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.

    513. WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.

      “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
      However-----
      Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

And her body was telling her [do not go] as her leg muscles were petrified like stone."

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
