Akemi Nakajima
Megami Tensei
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei - Death Match
Is it me who's lost it, or the school? Sensei, take a good look at me. This wound on my lip, the bruise on my face. I got the crap beaten out of me by Kondo from the karate club. Takamizawa Kyoko is just as guilty. The school just lets wild animals like that run free, and doesn't do anything to deal with them. No matter what happens to me in the classroom, the teachers and students just pretend it didn't happen. The violence that happens in this school is as plain as day, and yet nobody gets punished. I suppose the teachers are just waiting for students like that to graduate. As long as they keep their eyes shut, the calamity will just clear itself up on its own. They just have to endure it for two or three years. But this is the only time I get to be a high school student. I'm not going to let them just do whatever the hell they want any more. I'm going to summon a demon and execute those annoying insects.
~ Akemi Nakajima to Iida
This is all my doing and I have to reap the seeds that I have sown. My mission now is to find a way to close the passageway to the demon world and do so.
~ Akemi accepting what he's done and attempting to set things right
Nakajima had always been something of an independent maverick, not wanting to hurt anyone or get hurt himself, so he had never been beaten like this before. And to think this was over some stupid reason like rejecting a girl! The combined sensations of pain, anger, and humiliation overwhelmed him, and the wound in his psyche started to bleed, a drop at a time. Seeing him like this, Kyoko watched Nakajima with a look of pure ecstasy in her eyes, and laughed out loud. The sound of her high-pitched laugh reverberating throughout the classroom pierced Nakajima's eardrums and echoed in his skull, awakening an emotion he had never experienced before.

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei

Akemi Nakajima is the protagonist of Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, and is the reincarnation of Izanagi. Nakajima is a student at Jusho High School in Kuniritsu, a suburb of Tokyo. After refusing the advances of a fellow student named Kyoko Takamizawa, Nakajima was beaten up by Hiroyuki Kondo, which caused him to become furious at the heavy divide that existed at Jusho High School. The school had a group of gifted students, who were treated well, and a group of lower students, who were feared and could do whatever they wanted. Nakajima belonged to the gifted group, and he was tired of being abused by the lower group. In order to gain revenge, Nakajima studied the similarities between computer code and magic in order to create a computer system that would allow him to summon demons. Because of his unrivaled computer programming skills, Nakajima managed to create a system that allowed him to summon Loki from the depths of Atziluth.

Loki aided Nakajima in claiming the revenge that he wanted, but the demon was powerful and demanded female sacrifices. At first, Nakajima believed that he still controlled Loki, and he provided sacrifices, such as one of his teachers, Ohara. However, one of his classmates, Yumiko Shirasagi, became curious about his activities and witnessed the summoned Loki having sex with Ohara. Shortly after finishing with Ohara, Loki demanded that the next female be Yumiko, which was something Nakajima no longer felt comfortable with. Nakajima felt a connection with Yumiko, and he didn't want to hand her over to Loki. He warned Yumiko to stay away from the school in an attempt to protect her, but she did not listen to him.

While in Ohara's class, Yumiko was dragged to the CAI Room, where Loki was waiting. To Nakajima's surprise, Loki manifested a tentacled fleshy form, which he used to rape Yumiko. Nakajima attempted to fight against Loki, but he failed, even with Cerberus, his demonic ally. Yumiko awakened the spirit of Izanami, which allowed her to injure Loki, and escape along with Nakajima to Asuka. However, Yumiko died from the injuries Loki had given her, along with the extra strain from channeling Izanami. Nakajima dragged her body into the Shirasagi Mound in hopes of resurrecting her.

After escaping an attack from Yomotsu-Shikome, Nakajima managed to get Yumiko to Izanami's burial chamber. Loki followed Nakajima, intent on killing him to prevent him from summoning any other demons that could compete with him. Loki kills Yomotsu Shikome, and corners Nakajima in the chamber. Nakajima, armed with the Hinokagutsuchi and supported by Izanami and Cerberus, manages to kill Loki and to restore Yumiko to life.

Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City

After the death of Loki, Nakajima is returned to his home by Izanami, who warns him about the summoning of Set and keeps Yumiko with her in Yomi to train her in using her powers. Upon learning that Ohara and Isma Feed are using his Demon Summoning Program in an attempt to summon Set into the world, Nakajima meets up with MIT professor Charles Feed and Special Forces agent Narukawa, who feels a strange familiarity to Nakajima. Charles and Nakajima attempt to develop a way to stop Set, conceiving of the Demon Banishment Program. Nakajima eventually returns home, only to find that his mother is under the control of an Apep left by Ohara, and attacks him. Nakajima is saved by Yumiko, who returned from Yomi after Ohara killed her own family, but at the cost of his mother's life. Yumiko leaves Nakajima to grieve and chases down Ohara, leading to her to be used as a source of Magnetite by Set, who was summoned into Ohara and Loki's unborn child thanks to Yumiko's presence.

Nakajima immediately sets out to look for Yumiko, but fails to find her. In time, Nakajima and Charles finish the first draft of the Demon Banishment Program and locate Set, but learn from Narukawa that the Demon Banishment Project was shut down by the government (who, unbeknownst to them, are being controlled by Isma's Apeps). Nakajima, alongside Cerberus, Charles, and Narukawa, go into the Soga Forest and find Set, who is using Yumiko to merge the Assiah and Atziluth worlds as he attempts to build his true body from the unborn child and the magnetite in the human sacrifices he is drawing to him. Nakajima attempts to save Yumiko, but is stopped by Isma and Typhon, who knocks him away and threatens to torture Yumiko to spite him. Seeing Nakajima's despair allows Narukawa to awaken as the reincarnation of Tsukuyomi, who kills Isma and Typhon and holds off Set long enough for Nakajima and Charles to escape, at the cost of his own life.

Charles returns to America to coordinate a plan to summon Set harmlessly in a satellite in dead orbit, but Nakajima opposes the plan after learning that Yumiko would be dragged away with him. Desperate, Nakajima returns to the Shirasagi Mound and visits Izanami, who gives him her robe, explaining that it was actually Izanagi's robe, and thus could be used to bring out Nakajima's latent power. With the robe, Nakajima attempts to cut Yumiko from Set, only to be mentally assaulted by the visage of the students he murdered via Loki. Nakajima fails to rescue Yumiko in time and she is dragged with Set into the satellite, the resulting magnetic field being large enough for Set to fully summon his true body. Nakajima flies into space to battle Set, which alerts him to Yumiko's presence inside of him, causing him to detach from the satellite and attempt to descend to Earth with his minions. Using Yumiko's voice as a guide, Nakajima is able to find her within Set and the two slay him using an attack from outside and in. Despite Yumiko's pleads to the contrary, Nakajima rescues her from falling into Atziluth, allowing the rift between the two realms to remain open.

Digital Devil Story 3: Demise of the Reincarnation

Following Yumiko's scarring by Set, Nakajima and Yumiko take up residence in a hospital prepared in advance by Charles Feed and the CIA, using Yumiko's nursing as a pretext to hide. While faithfully nursing Yumiko, Nakajima is wracked with guilt and desires to atone for his sins.

Nakajima is contacted by Charles who has returned to the United States. Feed urges him to face the demons in battle once more, despite the fact that doing so would mean being separated from Yumiko. Feed assures him that Yumiko will be safe, but also reminds him that he must take responsibility for what has happened. As Nakajima tells Yumiko that he has to leave, Yumiko asks him to take her to Asuka. Despite his misgivings for the danger, Nakajima agrees to take her.

As soon as they leave the hospital, the two are surrounded by the demon Siren and her devotees, aiming to attack Nakajima as the originator of the demon invasion. Nakajima at first accepts this, though when Yumiko is called a monster for her scars Nakajima loses all reason, summoning Hi-no-Kagutsuchi and killing a human attacker. Seen as a demon by the onlookers, Nakajima is arrested.

The new national anti-demon self-defense law applies even to a minor like Nakajima, who is put to trial in a special courtroom. Unbeknownst to him, the servants of the demon lord Lucifer are manipulating the trial and prevent Yumiko and Charles, who had returned to Japan, from testifying in Nakajima's defense. Nakajima's crimes are exposed through the testimony of the parents of the classmates murdered by Loki, though Nakajima is relieved and at peace at being brought to justice for his crimes. Nakajima is sentenced to be put to death.

Lucifer arranges through his human allies for Nakajima's execution to be public and has Siren order her devotees to kill Nakajima's father in front of him the day of the execution. As Nakajima watches his father killed and trampled by a sea of people, a nightmare demon whispers into his ear and causes him to go berserk.

The remnants of Set's devotees and thralls join the battle as well, turning the planned execution into a meaningless slaughter. In his madness, Nakajima brandishes his sword against Yumiko, forcing Izanami to kill him. Returning to his senses in his last moments, Nakajima dies in Yumiko's arms. The next day, the Izanami possessed Yumiko carries his corpse west towards Asuka.

Megami Tensei

After Izanami was kidnapped by Lucifer, Nakajima and Yumiko descend into the temple that rose at the Shirasagi Mound to rescue her and defeat Lucifer. Their journey first takes them through the Tower of Daedalus, ruled by the Minotaur, who drops the Orb of Silence. From there, they travel to the floating city of Bien via the Valhalla Corridor, only to find that the city has been petrified by Medusa. After finding the Statue of Tabatha, Nakajima and Yumiko are able to resist Medusa's stone gaze and free the city, allowing them to use it to travel between the Valhalla and Mazurka Corridors and Infini.

With Bien freed, Nakajima and Yumiko descend deeper into Valhalla, which is ruled by a revived Loki. After gaining the amulet of Lor, a wizard who attempted to fight Loki, Nakajima is able to slay him again and gains the Orb of Roughness. Nakajima then descends into Mazurka, ruled by Hecate. In order to pass through the dungeon, the Silver Relief is needed, which was stolen from Hecate by a thief named Gaia. After buying the Relief from the thief, Nakajima gains the Statue of Latos through use of either Ares' Necklace or Heaven's Gem, and uses it to render Hecate visible.

After defeating Hecate and gaining the Orb of Stirring, Nakajima and Yumiko descend into the Rotting Sea of Flames. After navigating through the burning flames, they find the shrine where Izanami is kept and use the three gems to free her. Izanami rewards them with her robe, which allows them to safely navigate the Sea and battle the revived Set, who was rendered vulnerable through the use of Purski's Neigh.

At last, Nakajima comes to Infini Palace, where Lucifer resides. Using the White Dragon Jewel, Nakajima is able to seal Lucifer's Diarahan spell. After defeating Lucifer, the fallen angel warns Nakajima that one day he and the demons will return, and the temple collapses.

In Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei, after the events of the game, Nakajima records his exploits in the form of the game Devil Busters.

Megami Tensei II Nakajima created the Devil Busters game as a means of sealing Pazuzu after the events of the first game, and is implied to be the one who froze Lucifer in Ginza.

Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible New Testament Nakajima is a former hero, he saved the world only to live a hum-drum ordinary life. Bored, he wished for a world where adventures could go on forever, and his wish created the world of Last Bible. Though he is not named directly, he is wearing his black high school uniform. He's called "世界を則つしもの (Ruler of the World)".

Shin Megami Tensei In later versions of the game, it is mentioned that Pascal was a gift from a "Mr. Nakajima" for the protagonist's family.

Devil Survivor 1 and 2 Nakajima and Yumiko are two of the names seen at devil auctions usually bidding on high leveled demons.

Cared deeply for his demon Kereberos, that he opted to not summon him while he was injured and put the body strain of carrying Yumiko to himself. It is further shown that Nakajima now has good in him as he is able to wield the White Dragon Orb, an orb that will lend one its power if they have a just heart), Chaotic Neutral by the end of the second novel (His feelings for Yumiko were so strong that he openly said he'd save her over the five billion people that lived on the planet)

Range: Standard Melee Range, Extended Melee Range with Hinokagutsuchi, Cross-Dimensional with Summoned Demons (Demons passively create adecoherence field, that is essentially a special dimension of quantum fluctuation that they exist in, where humans cannot see them, and can attack from there. Demons can also create mirage realms, that shroud an entire area in mist, with them being able to attack from inside said illusion without being capable of being attacked back, requiring the user to go inside of their illusion to fight them), Complex Multiversal with Observation (Can affect beings such as YHVH through their observation. YHVH is the progenitor of all gods and all religions from all around the world, existing as the one true original god. Turned all other gods in the pantheon into demons. He is viewed as an omnipotent existence that created everything[11] A single manifestation head is so far beyond all of creation that not even his creations blades can harm him.[12] YHVH is a being who created infinite universes, and exists beyond the very boundaries of time within the multiverse. Which would include planes such as Akarana Corridor a void that transcends time and space, with it requiring a special ritual to enter, where even the Herald of Yatagarasu cannot put Raidou into this place,[13] putting it beyond even The Expanse a place that transcends the past, present, and future of the multiverse. The true form views the multiverse and his manifestation head are infinitesimal in size compared to him, and he exists as an incomprehensible transcendent being overseeing everything in his creation. His universe is a place beyond reality that is more vague and more infinite then anything the cast has seen before which includes areas such as the expanse and Akrana Corridor, and his single manifestation head. Along with this, humans observation has the potential to exceed The Axiom, who exists in a realm beyond every other realm prior[14])

Intelligence: Supergenius (Nakajima is apart of a famous and prestigious school where he is apart of the gifted class.[15] Nakajima is so good wih computers that he can make entire video games by himself in mere days that far outclass any of the commercial games, along with this he's so good with computers that arguably no one in Japan compares with him.[16] Noted by Takai Ken'chi that if he's a prodigy, then Nakajima is a bonafide genius.[17] Nakajima created a program that automatically translated text equipped with a database of 50,000 magic and occult-related terms.[18] Nakajima created a program that allows him to summon demons from the Expanse.[19][20][21][22][23] Noted that once Nakajima perfects his technology, demons would be able to freely roam the Earth without restrictions of movement as they originally had.[24] Loki noted that Nakajima's demon transfer technology was revolutionary to the point of being on par with nuclear weapon technology and that if he could master it then conquering the human world would be more than just a far-fetched dream.[25] When asked to recreate the demon summoning program, it was noted as easy for Nakajima to do and only took him several days[26])

Powers and Abilities

Is a user of Observation which grants them:
Observation (Varies between Types 2 & 3. Observation users consciously and unconsciously change truths around them creating Gods and demons from myths and rumors), Negation (The power of observation, has the ability to make something without form, be certain and stable, The Axiom, tasked humans with observing the universe, allowing humans to assign an answer to phenomena without an answer. Dagda mentions humanity's "understanding" (observation) is what's locked him and Danu in physical forms. Nanashi and his party's denial of YHVH cast him into a demonic form. Gods and demons exist within a human's observation. Demons that also exist beyond death can be killed by observation users), Negation of Null Existence (Type 3. Can kill The White and demons, who naturally exist within the expanse, which the Monochrome Forest exists within the expanse, a place that is eerily still, having no sound or smell, where even the ground itself feels unusual, which demons naturally exist in. The Forest also holds the White’s realm, which is a vast, white space), Negation of Incorporeality (Can harm and kill demons, who are beings made of data, that exist in a virtual world, along with being pure information. With even the most basic of objects in the verse existing as data), Negation of Abstract Existence (Type 1. Demons embody the phenomena and beliefs of humans, with their physical forms only being created due to humanity's observation locking them into these forms, and their true forms existing as the phenomena and beliefs they reside in), Negation of Acausality (Type 5. Can harm and kill demons, who are natural residents of The Expanse, a place that transcends the past, present, and future of the multiverse, demons such as Ishtar are capable of going into separate multiverses, along into the "real world", demons such as Demi-fiend, can exist in different universes asides from the original SMT 3 universe, demons can exist even when the flow of time itself collapses and there is nothing left but a void), Negation of Invulnerability (Type 2. Observation users such as Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV, can harm demons with regular guns and swords, even though demons when brought into corporeal forms cannot be harmed by conventional weaponry, along with military grade weaponry[27]), Negation of Immortality & Regeneration (Types 1, 3, 5 & 8; True-Godly. It is noted by Lucifer that only a human can kill gods and demons, that when gods and demons try to fight each other the most they can do is seal each other. Permanently killed YHVH. All demons are reliant on the observation of humans to keep them existing, including even nonexistent demons such as The White, allowing them to come back even if they’re erased from existence and nonexistence. Along with this, all demons that die return to The Axiom and reincarnate. This allows demons to die and come back in a short timeframe due to their continuous existence from The Axiom and the observation of humans. This means even if all of reality were to cease existing, The Axiom would still exist within it, allowing demons to regenerate back.), Negation of Dimensionless Existence (Type 2. Demons only have "forms" due to the observation of humanity with even some demons being in the lowest form of humanity's observation making them unseeable without help, the "true forms" of demons are in truth without the concept of form, without observation they are not certain nor stable, are a phenomena without an answer and are unbound by concepts such as truth completely unshaped by reality. Demons under their observation forms embody concepts such as infinity which they are free from in their true forms), Negation of Omnipresence (Observation can reduce one into a singular being, when the being was originally one that was everywhere within reality), Negation of Omniscience (Humanity's observation of YHVH defies his words and truths, YHVH is an all-knowing being that sets the fate of the entire world), Irreversible Damage (Nyarlathotep used a spear conjured by humanity's observation of a wound that can never heal to inflict a blow that could not be healed even by the strongest healing magic), Existence Grounding (Observation users can bring a demon or god's existence down to their level, such as when Flynn and his party's denial of YHVH as the one true god brought him to the level of a demon, massively weakening him. Dagda mentions humanity's "understanding" (observation) is what's locked him and Danu in physical forms), Power Bestowal (Gods & demons are granted by humans observations of them. To the point that a gods power is based off if humans still remember them. Observation has the ability to resurrect someone and give them strength to the point where they can fight Stephen with The Axioms powers), Power Nullification (Observation allows one to remove one's defenses and strengths along with some of their innate abilities), Reality Warping (Stephen stated that humans have the power to shape the world. Philemon states people have tremendous power in their souls over the flow of reality, with their strong wills being able to change reality), Conceptual Manipulation, Subjective Reality, & Creation (The power of observation, has the ability to make something without form, be certain and stable, The Axiom, tasked humans with observing the universe, allowing humans to assign an answer to phenomena without an answer), Truth Manipulation (Humans have the ability to change the answer they've found into faith, and eventually into truth. Observation debased YHVH's truths, removing him from everyone's mind, killing him), Memory Manipulation (Through the power of observation, the Persona 2 Innocent Sin cast were able to erase their meeting during a summer evening, creating an alternate timeline), Perspective Manipulation (The power of observation allowed humans to change the very design of the Abyss [the Expanse] to what they perceive it as[28]), Statistics Amplification & Resurrection (Observation has the ability to resurrect someone and give them strength to the point where they can fight Stephen with The Axioms powers. Isamu was able to survive a hit from Thor despite being a regular human), Statistics Reduction (Flynn and his party's denial of YHVH as the one true god brought him to the level of a demon, massively weakening him. One's will and beliefs can lower even a nonexistent entity's (such as The White) stats. Gods powers can be greatly reduced if they're forgotten. Observation allowed Aleph and his party to harm YHVH who stated as they were his creations, there blades cannot harm him, yet they were able to), Resistance to Memory Manipulation (Through the power of observation, the Persona 2 Innocent Sin cast were able to erase their meeting during a summer evening, creating an alternate timeline)

With their Willpower, they get: Sheer Will (Naturally users of willpower tend to have some of the strongest willpower in their respective universes), Statistics Amplification (A characters willpower in SMT allows them to increase greatly in strength allowing them to harm enemies they couldn't even scratch before and survive attacks that would have originally kill them, the will of one's friends and allies around them can invigorate one to become far more powerful then before), Regeneration (True-Godly. Characters that get completely erased by demons to the point that everything returns to nothing (otherwise known as returning to The Axiom) but with enough willpower one can regenerate back to life), Resurrection (Everyone praying for Raidou bolstered his willpower up, allowing him to ressurect and regenerate part of his body), Resistance to Pain (Users with high willpower can fight through pain that's so unbearable that it makes one unable to move, constantly take damage and being unable to control their demons well), Memory Manipulation (Noted by Polaris that all of the memories and relationships of the Devil Survivor 2 cast will be completely erased if they choose to restore the world, requiring a strong willpower to retain them), Empathic Manipulation (Humanity's willpower allows them to ignore the voice of God, with Zelenin needing to sing a stronger sword to wipe their willpower away), Truth Manipulation (Users with huge willpower can ignore the truths created by YHVH due to the bonds with their friends)

Genius Intelligence, Nondualism (Everything within Megami Tensei is one, with one simple word binding all together, oneness), Immortality (Type 8. All people when they die are sent to The Axiom to reincarnate back, some become demons in these cases), Weapon Mastery (Capable of using the Hinokagutsuchi in combat after seconds of wielding it), Social Influencing (Can recruit demons by talking to them), Hacking (While not directly shown, Akemi Nakajima is consistently noted to be the best in the country with a computer, with his technology being compared to the levels of nuclear weaponry and that Loki himself notes will allow him to take over the human world if he mastered Nakajmia's technology, due to this, he should have some innate skill in hacking), Accelerated Development (Leveling;Physical Stats, Intelligence, Skills, and Abilities. Nakajima gets stronger the more demons he faces, gaining more stat increases), Resurrection (If Nakajima or Yumiko die, they are taken to the river of styx where Charon will offer to revive them if they give him an offering. With Sacred Bell, revives the dead), Magic & Extrasensory Perception (Through drawing a thaumaturgic circle and connecting it with his computer he can find a location he couldn't find previously, along with this it is treated as "casting a spell"[29]), Fate Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Type 3. Is noted by Lucifer at the end of his battle that "He" is pulling the strings and is the one that essentially aided Nakajima and Yumiko into winning the battle), Existence Erasure, Data Manipulation, Information Manipulation (Type 4. Can completely erase demons, attacks in the Megami Tensei verse erase one from existence, with their body, mind, and soul, this would include a demon's Magatsuhi, which is born from the suffering of emotions, such as suffering, anxiety, sadness, and an enmorous amount that exist in the Amala Network, a network which has a place of information and all of one's emotions transferred into Magatsuhi, along with this, melting and liquefying demons and it's been shown humans can be erased too from attacks), Resistance to Cosmic Radiations, Biological Manipulation, & Gravity Manipulation (Izanami's robe allowed Akemi to breathe in space and survive the vacuums of and move within space[30]), Existence Erasure, Data Manipulation, Information Manipulation (Type 4. Can survive hits from demons, attacks in the Megami Tensei verse erase one from existence, with their body, mind, and soul, this would include a demon's Magatsuhi, which is born from the suffering of emotions, such as suffering, anxiety, sadness, and an enmorous amount that exist in the Amala Network, a network which has a place of information and all of one's emotions transferred into Magatsuhi, along with this, melting and liquefying demons and it's been shown humans can be erased too from attacks)

Self-Sustenance (Type 1. Izanami's robe allowed Akemi to breathe in space and survive the vacuums of and move within space[31]), Flight (With Izanami's Robe, gives him the power to "soar the heavens" and fly in the sky[32][33]), Information Analysis (With Devil Analyzer, allows Nakajima, to analyze demons strengths and weaknesses. |-|General Demon Abilities= His summons has Demon Physiology (Powerful level) which gives:

Standard Demon Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Demons can casually rip out a man's throat. They can also casually eat fully grown humans), Sheer Will (Demons are able to survive and withstand attacks that should kill them), Immortality (Types 1, 3, 7, & 8. Demons are the descendants of the gods of old. Who are able to do battle for an eternity. Many demons tend to be undead beings and humans that die and become ghost become demons. All demons are reliant on the observation of humans to keep them existing, including even nonexistent demons such as The White, allowing them to come back even if they’re erased from existence and nonexistence. Along with this, all demons that die return to The Axiom and reincarnate. Ouroboros the embodiment of infinity notes that unlike humans who are finite, demons have infinite and endless powers, allowing them to resurrect back infinitely no matter when due to not being made of finite matter), Abstract Existence (Type 1. Demons embody the phenomena and beliefs of humans, with their physical forms only being created due to humanity's observation locking them into these forms, and their true forms existing as the phenomena and beliefs they reside in), Null Existence (Type 3. The home of the demons is the expanse, which the Monochrome Forest exists within the expanse, a place that is eerily still, having no sound or smell, where even the ground itself feels unusual, which demons naturally exist in. The Forest also holds the White’s realm, which is a vast, white space), Incorporeality (Demons are beings made of data, that exist in a virtual world, along with being pure information. With even the most basic of objects in the verse existing as data. Even if a demon's physical form is lost, their residual MAG can still remain, allowing one to infuse them within one's weapons or objects), Nondualism (Everything within Megami Tensei is one, with one simple word binding all togehter, oneness), Regeneration (True-Godly. This means even if all of reality were to cease existing, The Axiom would still exist within it, allowing demons to regenerate back), Acausality (Type 5. Demons are natural residents of The Expanse, a place that transcends the past, present, and future of the multiverse, demons such as Ishtar are capable of going into separate multiverses, along into the "real world", demons such as Demi-fiend, can exist in different universes asides from the original SMT 3 universe, demons can exist even when the flow of time itself collapses and there is nothing left but a void), Paradox Existence (Type 3. Demons are a race of entities and are at the same time the same entity sharing all one collective hive mind of memories, species will note if they've been captured before even if they're being fought in an area one's never been to or were fused prior, demons such as Forneus and Decarabia talk about an event that happened in Nocturne where Forneus was late to a meeting due to his death from Demi-fiend), Self-Sustenance (Types 1, 2, & 3. Demons can naturally exist and breathe within the vacuum of space without any adverse effects done to them.[41] Due to their innate physiologies, demons naturally do not need to breathe, eat, or sleep.[42]), Accelerated Development (Level;Physical Stats and Abilities. Demons and Humans are able to grow from battles, allowing them to enhance their level of strength, magic, agility, luck, etcetera. Additionally, they can learn new skills and abilities from battles and further increase their HP and Magic capacity, and get strong enough to the point that they can fight end game tier demons), Reactive Adaptation (Demons as they grow in battle form changes around their body until they transform into a higher level with newer stats and newer abilities to learn), Berserk Mode (Demons enter a state of pure rage and berserk mode during the full moon, being completely irrational and unable to be negotiated with), Precognition (Types 3. Demons have the ability to see into the future, with the likes of Eligor being able to see things to come), Extrasensory Perception (Demons are able to tell who is actually a demon in disguise and who is an actual human. Demons can sense the power of an opponent and compare it to the power they sensed of others.[43]), Corrosion Inducement (Demons can shapeshift into a blob, allowing them to melt areas, completely dissolve objects such as steel chairs, and completely crush humans.[44][45][46]), Duplication (Demons can make duplicates of themselves. With them being completely disconnected from the demons, thus killing or defeating the clones in no way affects the original and they can endlessly spawn more), Invisibility & Perception Manipulation (Demons are naturally invisible to humans, and can do actions such as make noises and fight without humans noticing), Quantum Manipulation & Intangibility (Spatial. Demons passively create adecoherence field, that is essentially a special dimension of quantum fluctuation that they exist in, where humans cannot see them), Non-Physical Interaction (Demons can interact with each other and Gods, despite their physiologies and existences), Hell Manipulation (Demons naturally use evil powers from hell), Sealing (Gods and Demons cannot kill each other, thus resulting in them needing to seal each other), Soul Manipulation (Noted by a soul that demons can eat souls), Empathic Manipulation (Women cannot resist the allure of demons, even if they despised a demon normally, they'd fall mdaly in love with them if they had sex with a demon even once[47]), Size Manipulation & Statistics Amplification (Demons can grow in size to grow strong enough to fight Messiahs), Technology Manipulation (Demons can stop technology from working with their evil powers), Shapeshifting (Demons can shapeshift into humans to trick others), Hacking (Demons can hack into various servers and set up firewalls and "digital traps"), Necromancy (Demons can raise people from the dead and turn them into zombies), Personal Domain & BFR (Demons can pull one into alternate dimensions where coordinates and direction are different. Along with pull entire areas such as mansions into pocket dimensions. High level demons such as fiends can create personal realms to battle people in. Alice created her own personal domain that she could freely control. Demons can also freely teleport people to other locations), Pocket Reality Manipulation (Demons can warp areas into alternate dimensions such as the inside of a school. Once one is in said dimension the demon will keep it's hold into the dimension until it's defeated), Subjective Reality (Demons are able to take the thoughts of people and materialize them into something real), Information Manipulation & Matter Manipulation (As demons can make pocket realms and higher level demons can make universes, they are by extension they are creating areas entirely made of data and information down to their sub-atomic level), Illusion Creation & Perception Manipulation (Type 3. Demons can create mirage realms, that shroud an entire area in mist, with them being able to attack from inside said illusion without being capable of being attacked back, requiring the user to go inside of their illusion to fight them), Velocity Manipulation (When attacks are nullified or avoided, the enemy will forcibly forfeit their turn to move, allowing one to attack sooner, this extends further with absorbing attacks completely ending an opponents turn regardless of how fast they are), Teleportation (Demons are capable of teleporting around usually through manipulating their own Magutushi or Magnetite), Telepathy (Demons are able to speak telepathically to others.[48][49] Demons such as Aogami speaks telepathically with Nahobino), Power Bestowal (The memories of a demon's techniques can be passed down into weapons), Absorption (Demons can absorb lifeforce and Magutushi out of another. Demons can feed off the lifeforce of people to manifest themselves into the real world. Demons have the innate ability to absorb the air and earth into their bodies[50]), Healing Negation (Demons can inflict wounds that only spiritual magic can heal), Power Absorption (Demons can absorb the remains of other demons to gain their abilities), Consumption (Demons can consume and devour their enemies to gain power in battle), Dimensional Travel (Demons can feed off the lifeforce of people to manifest themselves into the real world), Healing (Demons naturally have healing properties, allowing them to heal other people. Demons have shown to heal wounds they create and "seal them away"[51]), Telekinesis (Higher level demons can telekinetically affect the entire environment to cause the Earth to shake, cause fissures, and affect mountains[52]), Existence Erasure (Type 4. Demons can kill humans, which in the process erases said beings from memory and existence), Invulnerability (Type 2. Demons even when brought into corporeal forms cannot be harmed by conventional weaponry, along with military grade weaponry.[53]), Invulnerability Negation (Demons are capable of harming each other, and are viewed as valuable tools to get past other demons invulnerability), Possession (Demons can possess one’s body), Creation (Demons can create Shikimi no Kage's that are unable to be put down for good and will regenerate even from observation users who can negate regeneration and immortality), Resistance Negation (Shikimi no Kage have specific weaknesses that cannot be exploited by Raidou's gun or other things to do with their specific elemental weakness, requiring Raidou to get a demon's elemental magic to affect it), Regeneration Negation (Unknown. Demons can create Shikimi no Kage's that are unable to be put down for good and will regenerate even from observation users who can negate regeneration and immortality. Which they themselves can negate the regeneration of), Forcefield Negation (Demons can destroy barriers made to block out humans from entry), Limited Resistance to Observation (Demons to an extent can resist some humans abilities of observation as shown with them being immune to conventional weaponry[54] and higher-dimensional demons not being able to be percieved by some observation users), Resistance to Extreme Colds (Demons are unaffected by cold temperatures, even while harboring the body of a human), Cosmic Radiations, Biological Manipulation, & Gravity Manipulation (Demons can naturally exist and breathe within the vacuum of space without any adverse effects done to them.[55]), Death Manipulation (Demons can naturally exist within the vortex world which kills all humans who enter), Disease Manipulation, Corruption, Data Manipulation, & Petrification (All demons are unaffected by the Cuvier Syndrome, a state where corruptive data came out of the black sun, irreversible petrification), Sealing (Demons naturally have a resistance to sealing if they’re stronger then their target, and their sealing resistance gets amplified during the full moon), Forcefield Creation (Demons can pass through tainted barriers that humans cannot pass through), Elemental Manipulation (Shikimi no Kage have specific weaknesses that cannot be exploited by Raidou's gun or other things to do with their specific elemental weakness, requiring Raidou to get a demon's elemental magic to affect it), Resistance Negation (Demons can create Shikimi no Kage's that are unable to be put down for good and will regenerate even from observation users who can negate regeneration and immortality) Powerful Demon Abilities: Power Bestowal (Demons can grant others their powers and strength), Reality Warping, Space-Time Manipulation & Creation (All powerful and god level demons sustain a colloidal conglomeration of countless mini-universes, each centered around a powerful demon that is sustained by said demon and destroyed upon their death.[56] Demons such as Morax have created and ruled over their own realms within the Schwarzwelt, and controlled their own sectors, being noted to be the energy source the Strange Journey team were looking for, said energy source is noted to control the entire sector, and be linked to the sector like a magnet. Each sector is a space-time plane layered atop each other, being planes outside of the human worlds local space-time existing in a quantum tunnel, along with being noted as parallel universes and other dimensions overlapping being isolated in time and space by enormous power being connected by quantum tunnels. Demons such as Set with enough Magnetite gathered can merge entire worlds.[57]), Immortality (Type 5. Higher tiered demons exist beyond death itself), Sheer Will, Resurrection, & Transformation (Some fiends are born from men that die in competitive sports), Curse Manipulation (Gods such as Anahita can remove curses), Resistance to Physics Manipulation (A god's divine energy isn’t bound by the laws of physics)

Other

Standard Tactics: Nakajima will summon his demons (normally Cerberus), from his COMP along with using his Hinokagutusuchi in combat if he has it.

Weaknesses: Nakajima at first is too prideful to accept when he is wrong at times or to show weaknesses to others, such as when Yumiko saw his fear from the possibility of Loki being able to escape from the demon world without Nakajima's help causing him to lash out at her. Initially his lust for revenge is the very thing that kickstarts the entire events of Digital Devil Story, though after watching Yumiko's sheer determination he now wishes to repent for his sins. His demons are weak to mercuric sulfide.[201][202][203][204]

Trivia

  • He has several books related to magic: the Book of the Dead of Egypt, the Pnakotic Manuscripts of the Cthulhu Mythos by H. P. Lovecraft, and possibly a translation of the real life Cipher Manuscripts, from the fiction book The New Golden Dawn Theory.
  • According to the first novel, Akemi is a fan of David Coverdale of Deep Purple and Whitesnake.
  • Nakajima is one of the bidders at the Devil Auction in the Devil Survivor games.

What were those? The woman from them called that man that looked just like him "Izanagi." Did it have any connection to the story of Izanami and Izanagi from Japanese mythology?"
  2. Digital Devil Story, Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 39 ""The heart of the seemingly dead Yumiko started to beat faintly.
    Yumiko, Yumiko!
A kind voice was calling her name.
Who are you? Is that you, Mom? Yumiko asked instinctively in her mind.
As if recognizing that she had awakened, the voice cut off briefly, then resumed speaking in a kind voice.
    Stand up, Yumiko.
Yumiko did not hear the roars of the demon beast nor the sounds of the classroom being destroyed. In fact, she had no sense of her terrible experience at all. All she could hear was the voice of the woman. Timidly opening her eyes, Yumiko realized that the voice was coming from the red aurora in the warped area in the air.
Through the aurora, the mirage of a peaceful countryside was visible. Blue rice paddies with not-yet-ripened seeds. Rolling hills covered in summer grass. Groups of giant boulders, simple yet mysterious.
Yumiko had seen that scenery somewhere before.
Isn't that the Asuka Ishibutai tomb...? As the thought popped into her mind, the woman's voice spoke again.
When you were Izanami in a former life, that's what you called it.
My former life? Izanami...you mean the goddess from Japanese mythology?
Yumiko was confused by the suddenness of the words, but what the voice said had the sense of an undeniable truth.
Stand, Yumiko. This space in the air is connected to Asuka, where I rest. Take Nakajima--no, your dearest Izanagi--and come to me."
  3. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 3, Page 12 "Whispering in synch with the computer, Nakajima continued to enter commands on the keyboard with unbelievable speed. Soon the entire room started to shake from an earthquake, and cracks formed in the windows. Nakajima entered his final command.
    > KILL: KONDO HIROYUKI, TAKAMIZAWA KYOKO
Iida did not like students like Kondo Hiroyuki and Takamizawa Kyoko. In fact, he hated them, but he felt even more loathing for the manner Nakajima intended to deal with them.
"Stop this foolishness. If you'd like, I can make sure the incident is investigated fully and have Kondo expelled. Just stop doing this."
Stumbling through the shaking room, Iida desperately reached for the computer's power switch. To prevent him from interfering, Nakajima grabbed his arm with a strength one wouldn't even imagine from him. While the two struggled, the rumbling started to subside. The fluorescent lights lit up with a creaking sound and illuminated the room as the freezing air surrounding Iida's body dissipated."
  4. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Part 2, Chapter 4 "The last demon to appear called himself Set, correct?" "Yes, that's right." "While it's too dangerous to try and conjecture the state of affairs in the demon world based on our own knowledge of this one, my theory is that the demon world is like a colloidal conglomeration of countless mini-universes, each centered around a powerful demon. Most likely, with Loki's death, the mini-universe in contact with Japan or Tokyo vanished, and Set's mini-universe entered to take its place. Demon summoning is just opening a contact point between the two worlds at the same time."
  5. Digital Devil Story, Sword of Flame, Chapter 5, Pages 59-60 ""Is this really what Izanami wants...?" Nakajima's palms started sweating with worry.
His last-ditch attempt at doing anything by knocking the spheres together produced fireworks that lit the pomade in the room. With a large roar, the flames leapt up and formed a circle in the air. In the center of the pale orange flames, the shape of a human's face formed, and flickered with purpose.
    Hi-no-Kagutsuchi...
It was the god of fire, Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, whom Izanami gave birth to right before she first died. Even though he had not been taught that name by anyone, Nakajima somehow knew it. Instinctively, Nakajima extended his right hand into the flames hovering into the air. Air swirling like a whirlwind, Hi-no-Kagutsuchi's flames painted a spiral shape in the air as they coiled around Nakajima's outstretched hand.
Nakajima bit down on his lip and tried to withstand the heat. His skin did not feel like it was being scorched by flames. Instead, it felt as if the flesh and bone making contact with the flame was somehow boiling, giving off heat from within. His flame-enveloped arm gave off a great flash of light so blinding that even the battling Loki and Kerberos stopped for a moment.
Rubbing his dazzled eyes, Nakajima realized that his hand, stretched upward toward the ceiling, gripped a sword that emitted a phosphorescent, crimson glow. An overwhelming power the likes of which he had never experienced flowed throughout his body.
Without hesitation, Nakajima leapt out of the burial chamber. As his sword emanated its unimaginable aura, Loki's movements faltered for a moment. Not missing a beat, Kerberos bared his fangs and attacked; the instant Loki tried to brush him aside with his hand, he left his face wide open.
Nakajima thrust the blade forward with all his might. Reflexively, Loki let go of Izanami and tried to cover his forehead with his right hand, but Nakajima's sword clove it in two. With a feeling of heavy resistance, Nakajima’s sword sank deep into Loki's forehead.
    "GYAAAH!"
Loki's cry shook the very walls of the burial pathway. Clutching his wound with his left hand, Loki staggered to his feet, the sword still embedded in his forehead. Starting from the protoplasmic mass of his lower body, the demon's bronze torso underwent a rapid transformation. With an unpleasant slimy sound, his bronze skin crumbled away. The impaled sword clattered to the ground. Loki's entire body transformed into an undefined, undulating lump.
Astonished at his own unexpected power, Nakajima watched as one section of the unstable mass of flesh before him started throbbing. Suddenly, as if it was a separate life of its own, a green heart broke through the protoplasmic mass and tumbled onto the floor. It started to draw a strange figure on the floor with the stream of green blood flowing behind it. As it did so, the air seemed to slightly twist in on itself, centered on the figure the heart was drawing.
"That is Loki! Nakajima, do not let the demon escape!"
Pulled back to his senses by Izanami's voice, Nakajima swiftly picked the Hi-no-Kagutsuchi sword off the floor and thrust it into the heart of Loki as it tried to escape into the warped space.
After an instant of silence, the heart burst like a popped balloon. The undefined mass of flesh stopped writhing.
Within a heartbeat, the silence was broken as Nakajima was assaulted by a rumbling roar from deep under the floor of the underground valley. Crimson stones started falling from the high, darkness-blanketed ceiling"
  6. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City, Chapter 2, "To Space" "So, you really did come after all.
Already inside the tower of flesh, a powerful psychic wave assaulted Nakajima's mind. Trying to shake off the head-splitting pain, Nakajima slashed his sword. Surprisingly, the inside of Set's body was easily torn up by the sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi.
What you are so gleefully cutting up are the bodies of the humans that have become a part of me. Dice them up to your heart's content.
Set's scornful psychic wave seemed to be almost pleased that a somewhat worthy opponent had appeared.
Where is Yumiko? Give her back!
    There was no response.
Instead, the space in front of Nakajima suddenly opened up. With a sickening sound, boiling swamp of blood appeared. One of the sticky bubbles burst. A human hand reached out. As if on cue, one by one, naked, stooped-over humans came crawling out of the swamp, dripping with fresh blood."
  7. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City Chapter 6, "To Space" "Freed from his spatial constraints, Set could now roam through space without restraint. One moment he seemed to attack with his foul, enormous mouth, and the next instant he vanished into the vacuum, reappearing to strike with his thick, heavy tail. Dodging alone took all of Nakajima's concentration.
However, Set's movements appeared to be slowing. Looking closely, the minor demons had amassed at one point on the giant serpent's body, clawing at it. Now that the satellite had been destroyed, they had lost the artificially generated magnetic field and were now competing with each other to cling to Set's body in an attempt to materialize in the Assiah world. Dodging the now-slowed Set's fangs, Nakajima quickly dove beneath the body of the snake.
    Now, Nakajima!
Encouraged by Yumiko's voice, Nakajima stabbed his sword into the throng of lesser demons.
    SPLUTCH!
For an instant, as if time had stopped, Set's movements ceased. Like thick glass penetrated by a bullet, cracks started spreading over the scales covering the enormous serpent. The cracked were centered on the sword lodged in its trunk. After a moment of silence, Set's body shattered into tiny fragments and dispersed into space. Yumiko, reflected in the light of the sword, floated off into space, still tied to the Egyptian cross; the mass of scale fragments around her looked like snowflakes."
  8. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City, Chapter 5, "He Who Calls" "Isma was convinced that something was Yumiko. Most likely, the high concentration of biological Magnetite within her body had been a major player in creating the magnetic field for summoning. The divine constitution she had inherited from Izanami was nothing but a giant retention of highly concentrated Magnetite. While meager in comparison to that of Yumiko, ordinary humans also held some biological Magnetite. If enough of it was collected, it might be able to create a permanent overlap of the Atziluth and Assiah worlds.
Having already formed a contract with Set, Isma borrowed his power to summon many people to attempt to create a tower of human flesh. And everything was proceeding according to plan. Even now, the heavens split with terrible thunder, and Set's most powerful servant, the great serpent Typhon, reared its head into the air as it slithered from behind a black curtain, knocking over the Soga Forest's trees as it went."
  9. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City, Chapter 5, "He Who Calls" "Having already formed a contract with Set, Isma borrowed his power to summon many people to attempt to create a tower of human flesh. And everything was proceeding according to plan. Even now, the heavens split with terrible thunder, and Set's most powerful servant, the great serpent Typhon, reared its head into the air as it slithered from behind a black curtain, knocking over the Soga Forest's trees as it went.
"Typhon, welcome. Breathe deeply and take in the air of the Assiah world." Isma looked kindly at the enormous snake. "Take a look, your first victim awaits in the shadow of that tree."
Isma pointed to the fleeing police officer. Typhon vanished beyond the trees.
Meanwhile, Set had transformed into a gigantic, vile pillar of flesh. At its peak, his sinister, glowing red eyes darted all around the area.
Typhon's presence is proof that the demon world Set rules is starting to meld with the Assiah world. Now all that remains is gathering more Magnetite and solidifying the connection...
    Isma's eyes shimmered with madness."
  10. Kaneko: Seth was Satan’s predecessor. Seth, Sat, Saton, Satan. Thought I’d play a little with that. He’s a demon sealed in Makai, and even Lucifer is afraid he might destroy the place.
  11. Profile: The actual One God of monotheism. The One God praised by Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He is the omnipotent existence that created heaven and earth and made man in his own image, but this also means that together with the angels, his bunrei [subparts], he also gave birth to demons. By giving humans bodies of flesh and bone, their lives and fears were repeated in the endless cycle of death and rebirth, restricting their range of observation.
  12. The reason YHVH is harmed during this fight is due to humanity's observation weakening him, as there's no reason for YHVH to be lying
  13. The Herald of Yatagarsu is capable of teleporting Raidou into The Expanse, a place that transcends the past, present, and future of the multiverse but cannot even reach this realm, along with this she exists a plane not apart of the human world, further showing how out of reach this plane is, it requires one normally to discard their human form and transcribe themselves otherwise they are threatened with being unstuck from time
  14. Shioda: Is it correct to think that humanity was created by the Great Reason rather than by the gods?
Yamai: In the beginning, I believe, pure humans were made as observers of the universe. Then, as time passed, gods and polytheism appeared as the result of their perception of the surrounding world.
Miyata: Nozomi says at some point that it’s all right for people to be unsure, but in the underground it is believed that the gods are one of the answers hypothesised by humans. From her point of view, the gods are a symbol of the ideal imagined by humans and the perfect form envisioned by them as their target, their final point. Monotheism, on the other hand, only has one final target, but there are many ideals to pursue. This is tied to Nozomi’s lines above. It’s all right if there are bad guys and if there are good people, there will also be fickle ones. Nozomi’s credo is that everyone should choose their own destination.
Yamai: Even when talking about the creation of the universe, I think the birth of the Great Reason is beyond our ideals. The universe we can observe stretches over 130 billion light years, but we don’t know how it managed to appear from nothing. Gods like Izanagi, who birthed out of his eyes and nose, were perhaps a symbol of a farming culture, but they had a power that surpassed the humans’ power of understanding and I dare say that in the case of the Great Reason too, if emotions were to arise, those emotions themselves would become gods. I’m talking about that kind of creation. For example, the wish to be worshipped gave birth to YHVH, or seeing the fights between humans signified the appearance of Lucifer. I think this is similar to the trends and movements born out of people’s shared consciousness nowadays. Let’s look at Japan’s concept of cuteness: if it spread throughout the whole world, maybe it would lead to the birth of a new god. I had this vague thought that the backbone of the Great Reason would begin like a pure baby who would pick up various emotions through touch, gradually learning about its surroundings.
Shioda: So it’s something along the lines of a god born out of the collective unconscious which came from shared awareness?
Yamai: That’s right, don’t you all just love it? (laughs)
Miyata: I certainly think there is some sort of huge collective unconscious, but I never really thought it might be connected to the Great Reason. And speaking of shared awareness, the scale would be quite small depending on the surroundings; the Japanese would have their shared awareness, but it would be different from that of foreigners. For example, even if the Japanese saw themselves as without religion, they’d look Buddhist to foreigners. This kind of thing leads me to think that the Great Reason is not at the surface of shared awareness, but belongs instead to an extremely deep part of the origin.
Shioda: I personally think that the term ‘bunrei’ [spirit divisions] often used to name gods in the story is extremely important in this game. The Great Reason is the origin. Does that make YHVH and all the other gods ‘bunrei’?
Yamai: Yes, it does. I think we can explain the existence of ‘bunrei’ through polytheism resulted from human perception. In the Celtic world, the druids saw Dagda as the forefather of sorcerers, but this was different for the Norse people or the Germanic culture. The people of each civilisation would see things as it fit them, so we got Odin instead. ‘Bunrei’ are born like this, but then again, treating Dagda and Odin as identical is wrong. Their powers and responsibilities are different, so it’s better for them to be thought of as different entities. Let’s have a look at YHVH: when he was born, humans perhaps observed YHVH himself, but once the scriptures were written, Uriel would be the one to be noticed and maybe that’s why he made so many appearances in their pages. Uriel frequently appearing as YHVH’s messenger also kind of feels like an accessory that comes to the front in order to preserve YHVH’s solemnity. But that is the result of the perception of later people, so we can also say that Uriel is a part [bunrei] of YHVH.
  15. Digital Devil Story, Prologue Chatper 1, Page 6 "Jusho Private High was a famous and prestigious school; every year more than twenty of its students were admitted to Tokyo University. However, anyone familiar with the way the school worked would acknowledge the extreme stratification amongst the students. The school was divided into two groups, the general class, and the "gifted" class. The gifted class received better facilities, better curricula, better teaching materials, and in general were favored much more highly. The gifted class comprised about twenty percent of the student body and was always the target of constant jealousy and disgruntlement from the general class. With such a gulf between the two, the violent incidents born from this jealousy were to an extent unavoidable. Both Nakajima and Takai were part of the gifted class. With his slender frame and delicate looks, if Nakajima swapped his uniform for a girl's sailor suit, he might very well be able to pass for a beautiful teenage girl. Takai's appearance, on the other hand, was the polar opposite. Judo practice since junior high had given him a rugged body and thick fingers. But his personality was not as tough as his exterior, and when he put on his glasses, he looked almost childlike."
  16. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 1, Page 7 "However, when it came to computers, nobody in school came even close to Nakajima--not even the teachers. Takai thought that you probably wouldn't be able to find someone who was as good as Nakajima in that arena if you searched all of Japan, let alone the school. The games that Nakajima would whip up in a matter of days were fantastic. No matter how popular they were, commercial games just seemed boring after playing one of Nakajima's. Sometimes Nakajima's expression looked positively mad as he hunched over one of the terminals writing programs in the school's CAI (Computer Aided Instruction) room, his fingers flying across the keyboard."
  17. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 1, Page 7 "If I'm a prodigy, then Nakajima must be a bona-fide genius. Takai nodded to himself as his gaze turned back to the scenery passing by outside the window."
  18. Digital Devil Story, Night of Demons, Chapter 2, Page 26 ""At any rate, I've got to figure out what that haze was." Recovering his composure, Nakajima turned on the modem and called up ISG's host computer.
    HELLO NAKAJIMA. WHAT'S UP?
Checking Craft's message, Nakajima changed disk drives and turned on another customized computer, an automatic translator equipped with a database of 50,000 magic and occult-related terms. Of course, Nakajima had created it himself."
  19. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 2, Page 9 "Nakajima first became interested in magic when he had the opportunity to read "The New Golden Dawn Theory." The book was poorly written, the interpretation clumsy and unskillful, but Nakajima read through the whole thing anyway. The world of magic held an appeal that hid a dark and sinister side, yet it also showed a rational and scientific realism as well. While re-reading passages that seemed unusual to him two or three times over, Nakajima had a sudden realization that was almost like an epiphany.
Magical theory and computer theory were surprisingly similar.
At first glance, the two worlds did not seem to have any connection to each other. However, the similarities between them had been noted by both magic and information technology researchers long before Nakajima’s revelation. Professor Charles Feed of MIT, a school famous for its study of artificial intelligence, was one of those researchers. Nakajima had immediately become a member of his group, the International Satanist Garden. For the past few months, he had been immersed in writing a program to summon demons, an idea he had thought up himself.
    It was almost complete.
Nakajima had already finished the core part of the program. All he had to do now was add a few subroutines and it would be finished. Until today, Nakajima had had reservations about completing his project. If his theory was correct, the program would definitely call a demon into the world. Up until today, Nakajima couldn't think of any particular reason to summon a demon. He hadn’t even known what he’d make it do, but the events of the day had given him a clear, simple goal.
"I feel a little sorry for you, but you're going to be the subject of a little experiment."
Nakajima started creating his final subroutines. "Use data addresses 3780-3990 for 'Toad's Legs.' Put this in the buffer, and before displaying the result, chant the spell. Yod, Dur, Dawr, Set. Wonder what this spell means?"
Picking up the modem receiver, Nakajima dialed Arkham in Massachusetts to connect with ISG's host computer. As the connection picked up, his computer's display filled with the image of the demon Lucifer. He called up the ISG AI Craft, and explaining the situation, he asked about the spell. Nakajima's English was not particularly good, so several times the only thing that appeared on-screen was question marks.
    UNDERSTOOD.
Finally, Craft appeared to have gotten it; Nakajima asked the AI what the spell meant.
HIGHLY LIKELY TO BE A COUNTER.
Craft's response indicated that the spell was probably just a time counter.
    > THANK YOU, CRAFT.
Nakajima cut the connection to ISG and set himself to the task of writing the subroutine once again."
  20. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 2, Page 10 "3AM.
    "All right, it's done!"
Nakajima slapped his thighs with his hands and stood up from his chair.
    > RUN
The disk drive started whining, and bizarre letters blinked on and off the screen. But in less than five minutes, the screen displayed an error message and stopped.
    > OUT OF MEMORY
If there wasn't enough memory for the program, it was either because the program itself was too long, or because it dealt with more variables than the machine could handle.
"No big deal. One little computer isn't enough to run a program like this anyway. If I use the school's host computer, it should have more than enough memory."
    Nakajima's eyes glittered with anticipation."
  21. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 3, Page 11 ""My program's just not working out the way I wanted to. But I'm almost done fixing it." Nakajima's voice seemed slightly metallic, as if in tune with the sound of the disk drive spinning.
"I'm always happy to see your enthusiasm, but you know that you need to ask permission in advance if you want to work in this classroom late at night. You're lucky I found you instead of someone else," Iida scolded as he flicked on the light switch.
"What is this!?" Iida's shocked voice echoed through the illuminated CAI room. A large geometric figure was drawn on the floor in white and red chalk, with Nakajima's seat situated at the center.
    "It's a Solomon Hexagram."
"Solomon? That has an occultish sound to it."
Nakajima paid Iida's sarcasm no heed, and his fingers slid over the keys of the terminal. Presently, the host computer behind thick glass walls in the adjacent machine room started to run.
"Great, the bugs are finally gone. It's done!"
After sending a print job to publish the contents of the program list, Nakajima stood and turned toward Iida. His girlish, almond eyes glittered amidst a demonic grin. His still-healing lip split open from his excitement, and a trickle of fresh blood stained his jaw.
Iida's gaze became stern. "All right, Nakajima, do you want to explain just what kind of program you're running on the host computer--and without permission, I might add?"
Nakajima brushed aside some hair from his forehead and responded nonchalantly. "I've written a program that will summon demons. This hexagram is here to protect me from them. In just a moment, a demon will appear. Sensei, you should probably get inside it as well. You might get shredded to pieces otherwise."
For an instant, Iida's mouth gaped open, and he took a long hard look at Nakajima."
  22. Digital Devil Story, Prologue, Chapter 3, Page 12 "Nakajima turned away from the stunned Iida and to the keyboard.
    > RUN
The last command displayed on the monitor, the magnetic tape of the host computer started to gradually spin. Iida tried to yell at Nakajima and stop the computer. But the moment he opened his lips, a frigid breeze from nowhere struck him and covered his arms in goose bumps.
"Summoning demons with a computer ...what a concept!" Iida twisted his lips into a smile to hide his fear.
"Computer theory and magical thought have many overlapping similarities. I bet the first person who thought up the principles of computing was an alchemist or Kabbalist. It's not that well-known, but things like spells, sacrifices, and thaumaturgic circles are very easy to put into binary format. Summoning a demon is just a transfer of the matter comprising the demon in the Atziluth World to the Assiah—real—World. A computer is the perfect device to facilitate it."
As Nakajima explained his theory, cold air wrapped around Iida almost like a living creature, and a bizarre smell entered his nostrils. The lights of the classroom flickered out, and the CAI room plunged into darkness, the only sound the spinning disk drive. Presently, the computer let out a low whine.
"Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh." To Iida's ears, the whine sounded like actual, real words.
    "Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh."
Whispering in synch with the computer, Nakajima continued to enter commands on the keyboard with unbelievable speed. Soon the entire room started to shake from an earthquake, and cracks formed in the windows. Nakajima entered his final command."
  23. Digital Devil Story, Night of Demons, Chapter 2, Page 22 ""Come, relax a bit. In just a few minutes, the demon Loki will arrive. Loki is well known for his beauty and mischievousness. A perfect match for you, sensei," Nakajima said a composed, sweet voice that could melt anyone’s heart. As Nakajima's hand slid from Ohara-sensei's cheek to the nape of her neck, her breath became deep and heavy.
"It's time to turn on the host computer. There's no need to worry, sensei. I'm sure that you will satisfy the demon," Nakajima whispering in Ohara-sensei's ear as he stepped away and entered a command into a nearby terminal. Beyond the thick plate glass, the reels of magnetic tape slowly started to spin. Nakajima picked up his handheld computer and entered a quick command. A white haze appeared from the liquid crystal display and began expanding before seeping out the doorway. As soon as it disappeared from view, the low growl of a beast reverberated throughout the outside hallway, sending tremors of fear into the bowels of all within earshot. Its name was Kerberos; a digital beast summoned from the Atziluth world and given form by Nakajima, he was to perform the role of guardian for tonight's ceremony."
  24. Digital Devil Story, Transfer, Chapter 2, Page 30 "It was past midnight. Nakajima was in the CAI room of Jusho High, facing the Host Computer. The machine was connected via a modem to the outside and he was trying to talk to Loki.
"So what's the story? Did the movement experiment work?"
"I suppose it would be best to say that it showed some results--at least to an extent."
The low, rumbling voice that came out of the speakers shook Nakajima's very bowels. Nakajima supposed "results to an extent" meant that Loki could exist inside another computer as an AI construct.
"So I guess you have no choice but to recognize how good my technology is?"
"If that's what you want to think, go ahead. Let me just say that we're a long way from perfection."
"Well, that's to be expected. When trying to send that much information in a single burst, there's bound to be some data loss."
Sweat glistened on Nakajima's forehead; his microphone headset gripped his temples. Nakajima continued to talk with a calm, disinterested air, but his entire body, stiff with tension, revealed a hint of uneasiness in a corner of his mind.
What will happen if Loki gains the ability to take form? Nakajima asked himself.
No, that's impossible. Just look, Loki is dutifully obeying me in these demon transfer theory tests.
    Demon Transfer Theory.
Gaining the ability to move freely about the earth had been a dream of demons for aeons. Since ancient times, the areas in which a demon could appear on the earth had been extremely limited. Furthermore, once a demon had actually been summoned, it could only hold form within a radius of a few kilometers from the point it was called. It could easily be said that this was the reason why Earth had gone for so long without seeing a demon invasion.
Nakajima had created a technology that turned what was once common knowledge in the demon world upside-down. This technology digitized a demon and transferred it to other computers over communication lines. Once perfected, it would completely remove the physical restrictions on demon movement on Earth.
Nakajima thought that his experiment had finally succeeded. It was a naive line of thought. He was just an ordinary high school student who had never made contract with a demon before, yet here he was immediately jumping to deal with an incredibly powerful demon lord like Loki, which could very well lead to tragedy. At least he was being prudent and showing forethought by realizing the danger that Loki could pose should he gain the ability to physically manifest.
I may end up having to summon another powerful demon from the Atziluth World that can counteract Loki."
  25. Digital Devil Story, Down the Road, Chapter 2, Page 45 "Loki's voice was full of resolve. He fully realized that the revolutionary technology of summoning demons with computers was on par with nuclear weapon technology. If he could master the demon transfer technology Nakajima had developed, conquering the human world would be more than just a far-fetched dream."
  26. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 4 "Quickening" "The first job of the Demon Banishment Project was to recreate the Demon Summoning Program that had been deleted off of Jusho High's host computer. That was easy for Nakajima. Several days later, as Nakajima was going through the nearly complete program line-by-line to check it, Feed called out from behind him.
"How is it compared to the old version?"
"Part of the machine-language subroutines might be different, but for the most part, it should be the same." Nakajima's voice was slightly downcast. It might have been that he no longer wanted any more association with demons.
  27. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Part 7, Chapter 2 "A deafening explosion broke Nakajima's concentration. A star-mark-adorned F-14 jet divebombed, slicing through the clouds. Nakajima all of a sudden found himself hovering over a battlefield. Below him was a hair-raising sight. An unbelieveably large lump of flesh, a hideous tower of raw meat, was slowly writhing. Its pale green, transparent gelatinous membrane was greedily expanding at its base. Several long black rivers flowed into it. No, what looked like black rivers were actually the hair of the people heading toward the tower. Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people tore off their clothes and proceeded forward completely naked. Rapid explosions echoed through the air. The SDF's F14 jets scrambled from the 7th fleet were attacking, targeting the top of the tower so as to minimize injury to the humans below. A rain of bullets from an attack helicopter's machine guns sprayed through the air. Though that ammunition was capable of penetrating tank armor, it was absorbed without any resistance into the body of the ever-expanding otherworldly creature, as if it was laughing at the pathetic attack. It was almost as if it was trying to prove that any attacks against it would be futile."
  28. Narisawa: Now, let’s change the subject. I’d like to talk about the Abyss or the demon areas. This time the Abyss is designed like the Sephiroth Tree. We need to read the strategy guide in order to understand that, but is this how you originally envisioned it?
Okada: I said earlier that Tokyo Millenium and the Underworld are in contrast but generally speaking, their opposite is the Abyss. It’s like saying Lucifer is Satan’s opposite.
Narisawa: Kabbalah is a secret formula that belongs to humans, so how do you explain Lucifer using it to design the Abyss?
Itou: That is why we have opposites. We can consider the possibility of humans being the ones who were influenced. We don’t know whether they saw the Abyss’s design after a near-death experience or were telepathically struck by some waves, but if pushed to say, the Kabbalah that’s transmitted through the world right now could be a representation of what they “saw”.
    Narisawa: It’s a reversal.
  29. Digital Devil Story, Down the Road, Chapter 1, Pages 43-44 "The scenery perfectly matched the photos in a much-reread book on ancient history he had eagerly studied long ago. Maybe it was true that an ancient Japanese goddess had called them to the mountains of Asuka, which were intimately entwined with Japanese myth. But how was he supposed to find Izanami's tomb without any guidance?
The demonic beast beside Nakajima let out a low growl, as if to encourage the motionless youth as he stared ahead blankly.
"Yeah, you're right, Kerberos. That has to be it..."
Drawing a deep breath, Nakajima balled his right hand into a fist and touched the tip of the beast's sharp fang with his wrist. In an instant, sharp pain ran through his arm as fresh blood flowed out of the wound. Nakajima tried to use his own blood to create and power a thaumaturgic circle In order to find the location of Izanami's tomb. Even as his blood fell to the muddy ground, the rain simply washed it away, distorting the shape of the circle. Dizzy from blood loss, Nakajima tried to redraw it.
Though he was well-versed in magical theory, Nakajima had always relied on computers up until now. Although this was his first time casting a spell by himself, there was no hesitation in his expression. There couldn't be any ambiguity when casting spells using a computer. Having mastered the theory to that extent, he was sure he could do this. Nakajima calculated his direction from the ishibutai and Tono Peak, used his computer's astrology software to find the position of the stars and phase of the moon, and drew his circle. Circle completed, Nakajima sat down and murmured, "Izanami, please tell me where you are."
He made a sign with his hands and began to meditate.
Nakajima lacked any sort of psychic powers, but his feelings toward Yumiko and the unique magnetic field at Mount Ayakashi easily pulled him into a trance. He concentrated on the silver thread of fate that connected Yumiko and himself. The thread he pictured started to glow. In that state of deep meditation, Nakajima tried to superimpose the thread that he was picturing onto the scenery of the real world. His brow wrinkled deeply as he focused his spirit to the utmost. An eternity later, he could clearly see the silver thread in his metal image being pulled into two small knolls that had been plowed into grape fields.
That must be where Izanami's grave is.
Awakened from his meditation, Nakajima knelt down and looked for something in the scenery around him that matched what he had seen in his trance.
"That's it! That's Izanami's grave!" Nakajima cried aloud."
  30. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City, Chapter 6, "To Space" "The glitter of the stars and the unending void surrounded Nakajima. Below his feet, the endlessly spinning blue globe shone up at him. It took him a few moments to realize that he was floating in outer space. Nakajima unfolded his arms. The Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi he held emitted a strand of light in the inkwell of space. Its blade twinkled and throbbed, responding to the tens of thousands of stars.
It seemed that Izanami's robe had given him the power to survive and move in the vacuum of outer space. Suddenly, a sinister psychic wave hit Nakajima from behind. Swinging his sword, Nakajima slowly turned around, and found his field of vision dominated by an open, gaping red maw."

  32. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City Chapter 5 "Demon City" ""Please, I beg you. Give me the power to defeat Set. Even if it costs me my life, I have no regrets."
"I have no other power to give you. However...." Izanami, taken aback by Nakajima's concern for Yumiko, hesitated for a moment, then quietly removed her robe and handed it to him.
"Wear this robe. With it you will gain the ability to race through the heavens."
Averting his eyes from Izanami's pure, shining, white naked body, Nakajima gently took the robe. It was as light as feathers and had the warmth of human skin.
"That robe was given to me by my husband Izanagi. It is also my connection to the human world. If you take that robe, then I may never be able to appear in the human world again. Not even to possess Yumiko..."
Nakajima stiffened at Izanami's unexpected words.
"But that is also the soul of Izanagi. Truthfully, it would be most fitting if you wore it."
Izanami's voice became fainter and fainter. Looking up timidly, Nakajima saw her white skin lose its form, melting away into the darkness.
"Now go. Please take care of Yumiko..."
    "Izanami-sama!"
Nakajima instinctively extended his hand. It passed through Izanami's holograph-like body and clutched the air. Only a small amount of ash remained in his grasp.
  33. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City Chapter 1 "To Space" "The Kumazasa was wet with morning dew. As Nakajima left Shirasagi Mound behind him, his calm expression showed not a trace of the worry that had lined it when he came here to ask Izanami's help. Turning around one last time, he sucked in a deep breath and kicked off the ground as hard as he could.
His body seemed as light as a feather. Like coming to the surface from deep within the ocean, Nakajima floated through the air, his arms pushing in a swimming motion. The wind whipped at his ears. It was not a great howl, but the comfortable sound of cloth fluttering in the breeze.
Using one arm to push the air aside and twist his body, Nakajima started flying parallel to the ground. Below him, Ishibutai tombs and the roofs of ancient temples looked scattered on a pale green panorama. Nakajima left Asuka and went in a straight line to the east. Soon, the blinding blue-black shimmer of Ise Bay spread out below him. Further ahead, the Nobi plains and the peaks of the Japanese Alps appeared to stare at Nakajima flying gently across the sky.
Nature gave birth to and killed millions of lives here...
Ages ago, Izanami and Izanagi had had a great fight. That day, Izanami vowed to take the lives of one hundred people per day, and in response Izanagi vowed to give life to two hundred people per day. Whether or not the gods actually had any interest in the lives or deaths of humans, surely there was no conflict over whether any individual life survived or died.
In ages past, this Toyoashihara might have been the country of the gods. But present-day Japan was created by the efforts of people, and ruled by people. It would be difficult to see any opportunity for the gods to interfere.
Am I really Izanagi's reincarnation? At the very least, that's what Izanami told me. But I do not want to be a god. I want to live and die as a person...
If Nakajima could really call himself a god, things would have been so much easier for him. Then he would have been able explain away the fact that the single program he created caused his mother, Yumiko's family, and thousands—tens of thousands—of people to die as a destiny given to humanity by the gods. The gods had simply given a cruel trial to humans who put too much faith in their own power by making them face off against technology-produced demons. It would seem natural, for the demons would destroy the human world, and after the people had seen just how powerless they were, then the ever-capricious gods would step in and save them by driving off the demons.
Even if I really am Izanagi's reincarnation, I could not become a god. I only created that program to get revenge on those who hurt me. And now I am using all of the power Izanami gave me to save Yumiko, just one person that I love...
Gaining altitude, Nakajima climbed into the clouds. Crisp, cold air caressed his cheek.
More than accepting the fact that his attack on the demons was out of stubborn insistence on rescuing Yumiko, Nakajima was trying to hold onto his identity as a person. Nakajima had not yet realized that destroying the many in favor of an individual was also a common act of those very same ever-capricious gods. From the moment he had donned Izanami's robe, his body had subtly started transforming within."
Of course, Nakajima had created it himself.
    > AN UNKNOWN VAPOR APPEARED ABOVE THE SACRIFICE. I'M SENDING A ROUGH ESTIMATION OF ITS FORM AND COMPOSITION. TRY TO ANALYZE IT FOR ME.
The data stored in the handheld computer traveled over the phone lines to Massachusetts. Nakajima tapped his fingers impatiently on the desk for a minute...two minutes. Five minutes later, Craft finally sent its analysis.
VOLUME AND MASS SUGGESTS AN ECTOPLASMIC CONTENT FIVE TIMES NORMAL. JUDGING FROM THE SITUATION IN WHICH IT AROSE, THE CHANCE OF THE VAPOR BEING LOKI HIMSELF IS QUITE HIGH.
    > I HAVEN'T PREPARED ANY DATA THAT WOULD ALLOW LOKI TO TAKE A BODY. BESIDES, THE CAI ROOM'S COMPUTER COULDN'T POSSIBLY UNDERTAKE A SIMULATION OF THAT SCALE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
FROM THE DATA THAT YOU PROVIDED, I CANNOT GIVE YOU AN EXACT ANSWER. THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IS THAT THE DEMON YOU SUMMONED INTO THE COMPUTER IS LIKE A GENIUS-LEVEL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. ONE CANNOT DISCARD THE POSSIBILITY THAT HE HAS FIGURED A WAY TO TAKE FORM HIMSELF.
    > THANK YOU, CRAFT.
Sending his closing message, Nakajima cut the connection."
  35. Digital Devil Story, Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 36-37 "Powerless, Nakajima stared at Loki and Ohara.
I should have considered the possibility that this could happen. I'd better find a weakness, and soon!
Nakajima frantically pointed the sensor connected to his computer at the nearly-materialized Loki. Calling up the ISG host computer, he sent the data the sensor had gathered about the demon to Craft. Meanwhile, Loki extended his hand toward Yumiko, rigid with terror. His bronze, naked body was beautifully symmetrical, almost like the Greek Apollo, and his muscular chest was covered in black scales. His black eyes, from which no one could possibly fathom any emotion, paralyzed her.
"Come over here." Pointing his talon at Yumiko, Loki commanded her in a low, cold voice. Yumiko looked to Nakajima for help, but he merely glanced at her and continued talking with the AI.
Nakajima knew he wouldn't have a chance if he tried to fight Loki directly, but Loki probably couldn’t risk doing anything to him so long as Nakajima had control of the computer environment. Nakajima knew that he had to find some sort of weakness to Loki while he still had the chance. He had a hunch that Loki would not be able to leave the magnetic field being generated by the computer.
However, just as Yumiko tried to stagger away and flee, a strange sound came from Loki's arms. For a moment they looked like they were beginning to melt, and then they changed into giant, jiggling, pink-colored blobs of protoplasm. From their tips, multiple tentacles lashed out and wrapped around Yumiko's limbs.
"No, stop!" The tentacles gripping the crying Yumiko's limbs pulled her up into the air, toward the body of the blob. A new pink tentacle sprouted and wrapped around Yumiko's body, and the liquid leaking from its membrane melted her clothes, latched onto her now-exposed skin and started writhing along her slender body.
    >CRAFT, HURRY!
Covering his ears so he wouldn't have to hear Yumiko's screams, Nakajima frantically kept hitting the keys. Finally the data transfer LED lit up, and Craft sent a response.
ACCORDING TO THE DATA YOU SENT, THE JELLY SUBSTANCE IS 58% WATER AND 17% ECTOPLASM. THE REMAINING MATTER IS NOT NATIVE TO THE PLANET AND CANNOT BE ANALYZED.
    >HAS THERE EVER BEEN A CASE OF SIMILAR MATTER BEING DISCOVERED BEFORE?
YES. THIS CENTURY, SIMILAR MATTER WAS DISCOVERED IN A MAYAN TEMPLE AND IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.
    > WHAT IS ITS WEAK POINT?
I CANNOT MAKE A HYPOTHESIS DUE TO INSUFFICIENT DATA. HOWEVER, THE MATTER DISCOVERED UNDER A RELIEF IN THE MAYAN TEMPLE WAS REPORTED TO HAVE EVAPORATED WHEN IT CAME IN CONTACT WITH MERCURIC SULFIDE-BASED PAINT.
    > MERCURIC SULFIDE? YOU MEAN A MIXTURE OF MERCURY AND SULFUR. BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO FIND SOMETHING LIKE THAT. TELL ME HOW TO DEAL WITH HIM NOW!
UNFORTUNATELY I DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT DATA TO PROVIDE AN ANSWER."
  36. Digital Devil Story, Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 38-39 "Nakajima immediately grabbed his handheld computer and entered the command to summon Kerberos. From the liquid crystal display, a white mist wafted into the room.
    "Come forth, Kerberos!"
In response to Nakajima's cry, the mist rapidly solidified, impatient to fully take form, and assaulted Loki.
"You are a beast of the demon world and yet you side with the human!?"
Flame-like breath burst forth from the fang-lined maw, and Loki let out a cry that shook the very earth. Deftly dodging an attacking tentacle, the demon beast Kerberos bit down at the tentacle’s base and tore it off of Loki's body. Loki's purple blood gushed out and melted the linoleum tiling on the floor. The two demons let out roars like thunder; cracks shot up the plate glass window, and the ceiling and walls started to crumble. Despite the fierce fight, Loki refused to drop Nakajima.
    "Kerberos, over here!"
As Kerberos leapt through the air in response to Nakajima's cry, he was finally caught as a tentacle wrapped around his body. His tail split in half and became two serpents; they raised their heads and tore off the tentacle holding him. Freed from Loki's grasp, Kerberos leapt at the tentacles restraining Nakajima in an attempt to save him."
  37. Digital Devil Story, Down the Road, Chapter 1, Page 43 ""Hold on. I promise I'll bring you back." Carefully laying down Yumiko's body, Nakajima picked up the handheld computer that had dropped to his side and turned on the switch. Fortunately, it still appeared to be working.
    If I can summon Kerberos...
As the white mist appeared from the small liquid crystal display, Nakajima breathed a sign of relief. The fully materialized electronic beast roared once and looked at his master with fire in his eyes. But the wounds he had sustained fighting Loki had robbed Kerberos of his usual vigor; it even looked as if his entire body had gotten a little smaller. It would probably take at least a few months for wounds that serious to heal. It might be possible to heal him by fixing errors in the computer data that comprised him but Nakajima had never tried to do anything like that before. Even if he tried, it wasn’t something that could be completed in a day or two, and Nakajima didn't have that kind of time. Patting Kerberos' muzzle to encourage him, Nakajima pulled Yumiko's body up onto his back and set out."
  38. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City Chapter 6, "Set Summoned" "Nakajima had been picturing two blue spheres in his mind. They were spheres he had been given in Yomi, and were used to summon Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. Knocking the two spheres in his mind together, they gave off a shower of sparks, and a blistering aura surrounded his right hand. Suddenly, Nakajima grasped the Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi as it glowed with crimson light.
Feeling the intense heat, Ohara instinctively jumped backwards. Immediately the crimson blade came crashing down, slicing into her arm. Nakajima charged Ohara, knocked backwards by the force of the blow, thrusting the sword to finish her off. But he was not adequately trained in sword arts, and Ohara escaped its tip by a hair's breadth."
  39. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City, Chapter 1 "Quickening" ""Thy legends still are known to this day--how thou killed thy elder brother Osiris, how thou turned all the all the other gods led by Horus against thee, and how thou fought them all and survived--all in order to make the Assiah world thy own."
"What is it what you wish to say...?" There was some hesitation in Set's voice.
"I have the technology to break the laws that bind thee and thy kind. Joining forces with me would be greatly beneficial to thee as well, would it not?""
  40. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City, Chapter 2, "Conflict" "The chests of the monsters were cleaved in two, and like a wave being drawn back into the sea, their scales vanished, leaving only white skin behind. Just like Ohara, until recently these monsters had been living as ordinary people. Only Set could have transformed them into demonic beings.
"Damned demons..." Nakajima gripped his sword and bit his lips, his eyes filled with indescribable desolation. Looking over at Feed, Nakajima saw that he was firing his Smith & Wesson over and over again while gripping his ornate cross. The mercuric sulfide bullets instantly killed the monsters they struck, but far more of them were missing their targets than aiming true.
"Professor, the battle is just starting," Nakajima called out. "Please don't waste your ammunition!"
Indeed, it appeared that no matter how many of the monsters they defeated, their numbers only seemed to increase. There were probably almost a thousand of them. Nakajima called Kerberos and took a step back, glaring back at what appeared to be a writhing, infinitely thick wall of creatures.
I'm just going to have to force my way right through them...
Just as Nakajima had set upon a plan, the hostility vanished from the eyes of the monsters. As their arms flopped to their sides, every one of them turned around and shuffled back into the depths of the forest. Their empty stares hinted they were all in a trance.
Nakajima turned around, startled by Kerberos’ growl, and noticed that Feed and Narukawa had a strange glimmer in their eyes.
    "Professor! Narukawa-san!"
As if trying to cut through an invisible thread, Nakajima brought down the Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi before their eyes. Suddenly returned to their senses, the two men looked at one another.
"That was close. We almost became enthralled by the demon as well." Shuddering, Feed flicked the safety of his pistol and put it in the pocket of his coat."
  41. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 6 "To Space", The glitter of the stars and the unending void surrounded Nakajima.
Swinging his sword, Nakajima slowly turned around, and found his field of vision dominated by an open, gaping red maw.
An incomprehensibly enormous serpent; though the demon had only owned a temporary form on the surface of the earth, the powerful magnetic field that had forced him into space had given Set a complete body.
Star Scorpion's 60-foot-long solar cells spread out like wings. Set's pale green scales glimmered as he coiled around the beautiful, practical satellite lying in medium Earth orbit.
It looks like the insignificant humans had enough knowledge to summon me into this empty space.
The voice echoed in Nakajima's mind.
But the humans will soon know their folly in thinking that they have banished me. Pulling this machine down with me is an easy task. And that is not all. Have a look at all the demons that were summoned here!
Several pale glowing things that looked like hoods aimlessly floated beside Nakajima.
Soon, they will take on bodies and seek safe haven on Earth. The end of foolish humanity’s dominion over the earth will not be long. Nakajima, whether or not you intended, you have become the knight that blows the trumpet signaling the beginning of the apocalypse. The only path remaining for you is to cast aside your humanity and work for me. It would be a shame to kill you. Think on it.
Ignoring Set's call, Nakajima focused all of his anger onto the sword he held directly in front of him. The environment that had given Set a body had also removed all restrictions on the divine power Nakajima had been granted. The Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, now an immensely long coil of light, drew a whip-like arc that emitted red light, and came down onto the body of the enormous serpent."
  42. Note: Demons normally showing these contradictions is due to the observation of humanity affecting them.
  43. Digital Devil Story Chapter 4, "Sword of Flame", Page 55 "RAUIERE!" Yomotsu-Shikome tried to tell him something in a foreign tongue. She could sense that this intruder possessed a power much different and far greater than the human tomb robbers that had foolishly wandered in before. If possible, she wanted to repel him without having to fight. Caught off guard, Loki stood still and narrowed his jet-black eyes, as if sizing up the power of this new arrival. Then, he started to walk forward calmly, an arrogant smirk on his face.
  44. Digital Devil Story Transfer, Chapter 1, Page 28 "Hashiguchi abruptly noticed that the display looked like it was damp, as if it was covered in a layer of condensation. As he tried to wipe the screen off with his hand, he felt something stick to his fingertips, and jumped back in surprise. Something slimy was stuck to his fingers; as he shook them violently, a heavy, disgusting jelly-like substance fell to the floor with a splat.
"Ugh! What the hell is this!?"
Inoue turned around at Hashiguchi's cry and froze in shock. Beneath the skin of the pink protoplasm, a mesh of green-colored veins spread out as the whole blob pulsated like an organ torn out of its host. The repulsive lump of flesh made a squishing sound as it started to approach the two men. Backing up, Inoue stumbled over a chair and sprayed the contents of his stomach all over the floor.
"Inoue! Get a hold of yourself!" Grabbing his coworker's arm to keep him standing, Hashiguchi started to run toward the door. As he turned, the gelatinous blob lashed out; tentacles covered in a viscous sticky fluid like red jam grabbed onto the legs of both men in an instant.
"Shit!" Hashiguchi cursed as he grabbed files and the phone off his desk--any object within reach--and began throwing them at his attacker. When it showed no fear, he grabbed a chair, lifted it over his head, and brought it crashing down on top of the thing. However, the skin of the gelatinous blob simply pulled the steel chair into its body, where it was quickly dissolved right before Hashiguchi's eyes."
  45. Digital Devil Story Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 36 "However, just as Yumiko tried to stagger away and flee, a strange sound came from Loki's arms.
A new pink tentacle sprouted and wrapped around Yumiko's body, and the liquid leaking from its membrane melted her clothes, latched onto her now-exposed skin and started writhing along her slender body."
  46. Digital Devil Story Chatper 2, Sword of Flame, Page 53 "At that time, Loki swiftly entered Shirasagi Mound, and was standing before the passageway that Nakajima had passed through earlier. "Just you wait, Nakajima. Soon, I will defile your precious woman before your very eyes before devouring you whole." With a twisted smile on his face, Loki transformed himself into an amorphous blob and oozed into the tunnel. Loki descended the passageway that took Nakajima hours to traverse in mere minutes. Soon the blob of flesh made a squishing sound as it dropped to the stone floor of the plaza before the burial pathway. At that instant, its outer membrane hissed and gave off smoke as it started to melt. "Damn you!" Loki quickly transformed back into his bronze body, and kneeling on the ground, let loose a terrible howl. Most likely, he could not stand the chemical reaction that took place when his protoplasmic body came into contact with the mercuric sulfide. Even now, the one gelatinous place of his body between his eyes throbbed and pulsated. Gritting his teeth and standing, Loki stared solemnly at the crimson burial road."
  47. Digital Devil Story Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 37 "Leaving his handsome face intact, Loki started to change into a cylindrical lump of flesh that sprouted countless small tentacles. The pink protoplasm started to glow and the movement of the tentacle fondling Yumiko's body became faster and rougher.
Yumiko lost all will to resist, and her head fell to the side limply as she passed out. Loki started to pull her doll-like body into his own; he failed to notice that Ohara was glaring furiously at Yumiko even as she was enveloped within the protoplasm.
Many women could not resist the allure of demons. Even if they despised them normally, they’d fall madly in love with them if they had sex with them even once. For Ohara, who had devoted herself body and soul to Loki, watching him have sex with one of her students in front of her eyes was an unbearable humiliation. Once Yumiko's slender white legs had sunk into the protoplasm and she was inside Loki up to her chest, Ohara went mad with jealousy, grabbed Yumiko’s head, and started to twist it.
  48. "Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 2, "Conflicts" "Crying out, Typhon whipped and spasmed. Sword and all, Nakajima was thrown aside, but Kerberos leaped into the air and caught him. Right then, Nakajima got the sense that he heard Yumiko's voice from far away. Looking around in confusion, the image of Yumiko, bound to a cross and writhing in agony, appeared in his mind. Most likely, Set had sent him the picture of her current state as the core of his enormous protoplasmic temporary body. Nakjima noticed that one of the eyes in her lovely, terrified face was dripping blood."
  49. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 6, "To Space" "However, he could not stop fighting. As minor demons from Set's world continued wriggling while trying to enter the Assiah world, an unmistakably familiar voice echoed in Nakajima's mind. Nakajima! I'm here! Aim for here! Yumiko! Is that you!? The instant Nakajima heard the voice, the Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi regained a shine like a nova as it tore through the air. Stab your sword in the direction of my voice! Nakajima quickly noticed a pale, white, phosphorescent glow on a part of the enormous serpent's scale-encased body. Yes, I'm inside the demon! If we attack from inside him and outside him at the same time, we might be able to defeat Set... Led by Yumiko's voice, Nakajima stabbed his blade toward the phosphorescent glow. But an instant before the tip reached it, the tail of the giant snake forcefully knocked the blade aside and sent Nakajima flying far back. Flipping over and regaining his composure, robe fluttering behind him, Nakajima saw the rolling form of Set uncoiling, as if swimming through the vacuum. Foolish girl! To think you would let me know that you still live! Now I no longer have to depend on this irritating machine!
  50. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of Demon City Chapter 2 "Conflicts" "Isma's body appeared to float in the air as he laughed, and two unusual lights appeared by his feet. Covered in jet-black scales, the great black serpent Typhon stared at Nakajima with its golden eyes, Isma riding on its back, as it slowly rose into the air, towering like an enormous tree. With its head nearly extended to the full height of the tower of flesh, the huge serpent shuddered and assaulted Nakajima. The lower half of Isma's body had been fused into Typhon's; perhaps it was another sort of fusion the demon could do in addition to its innate ability to absorb the earth and the air into its own body."
  51. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 6 "Quickening" "Matoba was taking a nap on the sofabed in the study next to his office. The heavy black bags under his eyes betrayed his exhaustion from his nonstop efforts to bring his party together and block the National Secrets Protection Act from being passed. Taking advantage of the fact that the world stage was becoming a war of information, the restrictions in the act clearly indicated that the Liberal Party was veering further and further to the right. As the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, that was hard for Matoba to allow.
A quiet breeze blew into the room through the air conditioner that Matoba had left on. Not even disturbing the sound of that breeze, the snake slipped into the room through the slit under the door. It raised its head, fixating on its prey. Its small red eyes looked over the snoring, sleeping form of Matoba. Wiggling its body rapidly, the white snake slithered across the floor, effortlessly climbed up the sofabed and dove into the V-neck of Matoba's exposed undershirt, clearly by his unfastened tie.
Without any hesitation, the pale serpent bit into the exaggeratedly expanding and contracting fat stomach before it. Like a sharp drill, the slender body of the snake tunneled into Matoba's gut. As if he felt no pain whatsoever, Matoba slept on peacefully.
A minute or so later, Matoba suddenly twisted up from the sofabed as if a wave of high-voltage electricity was running through him. His body started to spasm wildly. However, it appeared that the Apep had gained full control of his nervous system; he soon started snoring again and fell into a deep sleep. Strangely enough, the wound on his stomach had sealed, as if cured by some sort of magic. Only moments later, the light sound of a Cedric driving away could be heard from the front of Matoba's manor.
  52. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Part 2: Chapter 2, ""I made it back to Toyoashihara..." His lips trembled with relief. Opening his arms wide, the youth took a deep breath of the humid air, pursed his lips forcefully, turned around, and sat down. For a while, he stared at the form of the grotesque woman chasing him, then shook his head sadly and closed his eyes. The youth started to meditate. When the woman had gotten within reach of a stone's throw, his body seemed to float slightly in midair for a moment, and then there was a huge undulation in the atmosphere. As if a huge invisible power had been released, the earth shook, and the fissure that appeared directly beneath the youth spread to the surrounding moutains, and countless rocks started to fall on the path. As the woman stopped, a giant boulder rolled in front of the path in front of her eyes, sealing it off. "Izanagi! I will come to you! Even if it takes hundreds or thousands of years!" The sound of the woman's bitter cries rose from beyond the towering pile of earth. "Forgive me, Izanami..." Plugging his ears with his hands, the youth staggered into the wetlands, the tall reeds rising even above his height."
  53. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 2 "To Space" "A deafening explosion broke Nakajima's concentration.

Star Scorpion's 60-foot-long solar cells spread out like wings. Now a giant snake, Set's pale green scales glimmered as he coiled around the beautiful yet functional satellite lying in dead orbit. It looks like the insignificant humans had enough knowledge to summon me into this empty space. The voice echoed in Nakajima's mind. Fool, you do not value your life. Set lurched forward. Weaving away from the enormous serpent's attacking fangs, Nakajima was enveloped by a miasma like ice. The Sword of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi had already produced many pale sparks striking the body of the serpent coiled around the satellite. Yet the tough scales showed no sign of injury. Not only that, but the ugly faces and disgusting tentacles of materializing new demons floated like ghosts in the space around him. The noisy voices of the demons amplified like they were advancing down on Nakajima."
  56. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 4 "Quickening" "I don't think so. From what I've just seen, there's no mistake that a magnetic field suitable for summoning a demon was set up. It may be that the reason no demon appeared was that it might have arrived in the Assiah world via a different magnetic field."
"There’re still some details about the mechanism for demon summoning that I don't really understand yet."
"Unusual words, coming from the genius that was the first to successfully summon a demon via a computer." Feed grinned broadly, but his expression soon turned grave as he looked directly at Nakajima.
"The last demon to appear called himself Set, correct?"
    "Yes, that's right."
"While it's too dangerous to try and conjecture the state of affairs in the demon world based on our own knowledge of this one, my theory is that the demon world is like a colloidal conglomeration of countless mini-universes, each centered around a powerful demon. Most likely, with Loki's death, the mini-universe in contact with Japan or Tokyo vanished, and Set's mini-universe entered to take its place. Demon summoning is just opening a contact point between the two worlds at the same time."
"So what would happen if two contact points were opened at the same time?"
"The demon would decide where it wanted to appear. However, there are some examples in medieval records of demon summonings that report that when the difference in strength of the two magnetic fields was great enough, the demon would be pulled to the stronger field, regardless of which it wanted to go to..."
  57. Digital Devil Story 2: Warrior of the Demon City Chapter 5, "He Who Calls" "Isma had realized that the bizarre life form that had torn itself out of Ohara's belly was a temporary body for Set, who had been planning to take form by possessing Loki's child. According to his theory, summoning a demon via a computer would require creating a magnetic field with which to summon the demon and the processing of the demon's data to be materialized, both of which would have to be done at virtually the same time. If the magnetic field was weak, the point of connection between the demon's world and the Assiah world would narrow, constraining the amount of data that could be processed. On the other hand, no matter how powerful the magnetic field was, unless the digital data could be processed quickly and concisely, the demon would never be able to take form. It was quite possible that even a supercomputer would not be able to handle the massive amount of data that would be needed to materialize a high-ranking demon. Despite that fact, the high-ranking demon Set was able to to take form in the Assiah world, even if it was only in a makeshift body. Something must have added a great deal of power in setting up the necessary magnetic field for a summoning; this in turn would ease the restraints on the data processing. Isma was convinced that something was Yumiko. Most likely, the high concentration of biological Magnetite within her body had been a major player in creating the magnetic field for the summoning. The divine constitution that she had inherited from Izanami was nothing but a giant retention of that highly concentrated Magnetite. While meager in comparison to that of Yumiko, ordinary humans also retained some biological Magnetite. If enough of it was collected, it might be able to create a permanent overlap of the Atziluth and Assiah worlds entirely. Therefore, having already formed a contract with Set, Isma borrowed his power to summon many people and attempt to create a tower of human flesh. And everything was proceeding just according to plan. Even know the heavens split with a terrible thundering, and Set's most powerful servant, the great serpent Typhon, reared its head into the air as if slithering from behind a black curtain, knocking over the Soga Forest's trees as it went. "Typhon, welcome. Breathe deeply and take in the air of the Assiah world." Isma looked kindly at the enormous snake. "Take a look, your first victim awaits in the shadow of that tree." As Isma pointed to the copse where Officer Nimura was, Typhon vanished beyond the trees. Meanwhile, Set had transformed into a gigantic, vile pillar of flesh, his sinister, red glowing eyes at its peak darting all around the area. Typhon's presence is proof that the demon world Set rules is starting to meld with the Assiah world. Now all that remains is to gather more biological Magnetite and solidify the connection... Isma's eyes shimmered even brighter with madness."

  201. Digital Devil Story Possession, Chapter 2, Pages 36-37 "Powerless, Nakajima stared at Loki and Ohara.
  202. Digital Devil Story Sword of Flame, Chapter 1, Pages 50-51 "A viscous drop of water fell onto Nakajima's cheek. Listening closely, he could hear the steady sound of water coming from high above. Over the aeons, the lime deposits in this trickle had accumulated here and there along the path to form giant stalagmites. Nakajima touched the rising cliff to feel it. The surface of the cold stone was wet with condensation. When he scratched it, the rock crumbled away easily, revealing a new layer of red stone below. Idly recalling that the ancient red paint used in ancient Japanese tombs was mercuric-sulfide based, Nakajima suddenly remembered Craft's words.
When explorers had discovered material that was apparently part of a demon's body in a Mayan temple, it evaporated when it came into contact with their mercuric-sulfide based paint. In other words, this tomb was designed specifically to keep demons out. His courage buoyed by this realization, Nakajima picked up Yumiko's body and walked toward the depths of the red valley. However, he’d never had that much in the way of stamina in the first place. In less than ten minutes, his legs were exhausted. He would have liked Kerberos' help, but he didn't want to put any more stress on the already terribly-injured demon. Besides, this path with walls literally painted with demon repellent would hardly be the most appropriate place for Kerberos.
  203. Digital Devil Story Sword of Flame, Chapter 1, Page 51 "Yomotsu-Shikome took a step forward. As Nakajima met her gaze, he carefully laid Yumiko down, wiped the cold sweat on his hands onto his slacks, and picked up his handheld computer.
    "Kerberos, please come here."
Before the white haze that emerged from the liquid crystal display could even take on a rough outline of its shape, it vanished with a weak bark. Apparently, the pathway’s crimson paint really did seal off the power of the demon beast.
  204. Digital Devil Story Sword of Flame, Chapter 2, Page 53 "Loki descended the passageway that took Nakajima hours to traverse in mere minutes. Soon the blob of flesh made a squishing sound as it dropped to the stone floor of the burial chamber plaza. The moment he touched the floor, his outer membrane hissed smoke as it started to melt.
    "Damn you!"
Loki quickly transformed back into his bronze body. Kneeling, he let loose a terrible howl. He could not stand the chemical reaction that took place when his protoplasmic body came into contact with the mercuric sulfide. Between his eyes, the one gelatinous place on his body throbbed and pulsated.
