There's no way we can beat 'em with brute strength alone. But we CAN bring peace back to the world. I just know it.
The leader of the Bla-Bla Gang and a reliable friend who uses his tempered body to beat his foes into submission.
~ Character Data on Teddy

Background

Teddy (full name rumored to be Teddy Junior, the 3rd) is one of the main characters in MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings). He lives in Valentine, where he is the leader of the infamous Bla-Bla Gang.

Teddy is normally the fourth and last character to join Ninten's party, although he can be the third character to join Ninten if the player gets to him before reaching Ana. It should be noted that it is not a necessity to have Teddy join Ninten's party in order to finish the game.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Teddy’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Teddy was named after the car repair factory of his parents, which went under the name "TEDDY". Already at the age of three did Teddy display more adult-like properties, where he also used to carry around a package of chocolate cigarettes. He started to enjoy fighting at the age of five, and at the age of ten he surpassed 170 cm in height and switched his chocolate cigarettes to real ones. He was eleven years old during the first time he arrived home in a patrol car, and when he was twelve years old, lied and said that he was twice his actual age to take up a graveyard shift at the Live House. He used his wages to purchase a Siamese cat to his parents as a present at the age of thirteen, and became the leader of the Bla-Bla Gang when he was fourteen.

During the events of EarthBound Beginnings, Teddy first meets Ninten in the Live House after the party's musical performance, where he challenges him to a fight, accusing Ninten of beating up some of his gang members. After a few turns, Teddy stops fighting and deems Ninten a strong person, asking him to travel with him for a while. He wants to go to Mt. Itoi to avenge his parents that were killed there, and takes Ninten and Ana up the mountain, taking Lloyd's place.

While going up Mt. Itoi, the trio rest at a cabin on the mountain plateau. However, during their stay, they are attacked by a massive robot. Teddy got severe injuries after the ambush, while Ninten and Ana make it out safely, due to a lucky save by Lloyd and his borrowed tank. He is left to recover at a healer's house near Mt. Itoi's base for the rest of the game.

After the game's events, Teddy is shown to have recovered from his injuries, and is confirmed to be daily singing at the Live House. In the original Japanese version of EarthBound Beginnings, however, the extended ending is omitted, which left his fate ambiguous. However, Mother 1+2, released in Japan, added the ending sequence that was added to the English prototype.

Defeated enemies such as the SuperEnergy)

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Human Achievements (Teddy became a popular singer at the Live House after his recovery), Weapon Mastery (Blade Usage; Uses swords and knives as his primary weapon of choice. Unqiue Weaponry Usage; He can also use boomerangs and slingshots), Enhanced Senses (Still able to hit enemies even while blinded. Can sense when enemies are nearby through the check system), Extrasensory Perception (Can sense danger in places that people who normally can see ghost can’t), Sheer Will (Accepted his fate to go to the mountains and avenge his family with no issues), Regeneration (Mid-Low overtime; Able to take attacks such as zombie bites, animal bites, and explosions without being hindered and can heal from them with PSI and by eating food items. Can quickly recover from being dehydrated. Staying at a rest area overnight completely recovers Hp and Pp), Astral Projection (When party members are unconscious they are immediately transported to the hospital until they're picked up, where the cast will have ghost sprites that are acknowledged by characters, and characters directly feeling their presence, and acknowledging they are speaking to their "soul", showing the cast create an astral projection from their soul that observes the party while they are unconscious in the hospital), Reliance (Reliance [On Universal System], Partial Protection; Losing a battle causes the defeat to be unwritten, becoming a bad dream and allowing the Ninten and co. to wake up at their last save location), Fate Protection, Time Manipulation, & Dream Manipulation (Passive; Teddy is among a chosen one apart of a universal system of destiny[5], along with being watched over by The Player. Just like in Ness’ game over that her dying is all merely a bad dream), Possible Divine Protection (prayers in the MOTHER series are directly noted to be God being with the person[6], with Paula being able to use prayers to have various supernatural effects to happen in the battle with her prayers being used to ultimately defeat Giygas where in the original translation, Paula was praying directly to God[7]. In MOTHER 1 Ninten is told by Ana's father that they will be victorous on their journey and that his prayers will be heard), Information Analysis (Able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent along with their stats), Accuracy Manipulation (Ninten’s increase of wisdom raises the chance of inflicting status ailments on an enemy, whether from items or certain PSI techniques. Increasing the fight stat increases the odds of the attack landing and of it being a critical hit), Statistics Boost & Rage Power (Capable of increasing his offense through screaming), Damage Boost (With smash attacks, can deal far more damage then he can regularly), Accelerated Development (Battle & Leveling; Physical Stats & Abilities; Naturally gets stronger as he progresses, naturally gaining resistances through leveling up. His fight, speed, offense, defense, and strength increases at a far higher rate then the rest of the cast in battle), Non-Standard Interaction (Soul Interaction; Can kill and interact with ghosts. Abstract Interaction; Can physically interact and fight enemies from magicant who are abstract representations and feelings of one’s mind), Empathic Manipulation (Defeating enemies causes them to lose their bloodlust and calm down), Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; Comparable to Ninten who through ignoring the Forgotten Man, Ninten makes him disappear, it is noted by a resident of Magicant that he was once well known but everyone forgot him), Has the potential for: Subjective Reality, Creation, Illusion Creation (Standard Illusions), & Mind Manipulation (Magicant is a universe created entirely from the users own memories[8]. It exists only within the mind of the user and is shaped entirely by their thoughts and desires. Magicant World's are shaped from the users perspective. Maria for example warped her own world to fit her views as a Queen. Ness's Magicant was shaped almost like a Town with stars and planets in the background. Along with that, users of Magicant can create weapons, equipments, healing items, and inhabitants that represent a certain side to their mind (A strong example would be the Flying Men which represents the users own courage). Some inhabitants act as enemies that will attack or serve as either a memory of the users own experience or simple civilians. It's unknown if there is a Sea of Eden in other variations of Magicant, however it is stated by Talah Rama that the Truth makes itself known to humanity with Magicant. Magicant only disappears once the goal of the user has been met. To provide some insight, Maria's goal was to recover from amnesia and remember the melody she sung to Giygas, and Ness's goal was to awaken his full potential by touching the Universal System. The journey has to be a momentous part of the person's life that culminates in an event that causes them to look inward and triggers the ability to access their magicant).

Resistance to Disease Manipulation & Zombification (Zombie bites do not affect him), Poison Manipulation (Resists the effects of the stinger), Mind Manipulation (Madness Manipulation; Can resist Giygas’s influence, whose black clouds appearing over the mountains caused all the townsfolk and its people to go crazy. Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sleep Manipulation (Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sense Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, & Paralysis (The more Teddy's strength raises the less chance he has of being hit with Blindness, Poison and Paralysis), Information Analysis (If Ninten is put into a position where he checks Teddy there will be no effect), Radiation Manipulation, Temperature Manipulation, Air Manipulation & Poison Manipulation (Can endure the Nuclear Reactor Robot’s explosion without suffering any adverse effects, which would include an intense pulse or wave of heat, light, air pressure, and radiation including a lack of oxygen and carbon monoxide poisoning)

Equipment

Blades

  • Butter Knife: Teddy's starting blade, the weakest of the blade weapons, increasing Teddy's offense by 15 when equipped.
  • Survival Knife: A stronger blade Teddy gets. Increases Teddy's offense by 38 when equipped.
  • Sword: A much stronger blade then previously, increases Teddy's offense by 46 when equipped.
  • Katana: Teddy's best offense-affecting equipment, and the overall strongest offense-affecting item in the game, increasing his offense by 58 when equipped.

Other Equippable Weapons

  • Boomerang: Weapon anyone can equip, raises offense by 32.
  • Slingshot: Ranged weapon that raises offense by 7. Has a higher chance of missing then other weapons.

Other

Standard Tactics: Teddy uses mainly brute force to attack enemies.

Weaknesses: One of the two party members that doesn't have PSI. Initially open to brute force though learns near the end of the game that's not the way to solve every problem. Can contract colds just from people simply coughing near him or sneezing near him. Their astral forms are unable to interact with anything, where it's shown characters like Jeff being unconscious makes him unable to fix broken items as his conscious physical body is not there.

Note

Explanations

Trivia

  • Pippi's stats are identical to Teddy's, however because Teddy is met at a higher level and Pippi stays for a short time, it's difficult to notice right away.
  • Oddly, even if the player doesn't trigger the incident with the tank on Mt. Itoi, or even just skips obtaining Teddy entirely, the ending still states that he "fully recovered".
  • Jack was his early fan-name among English fans, originating from the shop in Easter being named "Jack"; Teddy happens to bear a resemblance to the boy running the shop. When his real name was discovered, it was phased out.
  • The police officers use the same overworld sprite as Teddy, but discolored and slightly modified.
  • Teddy is often compared to Frank Fly from EarthBound, as both are misguided leaders of gangs who reform upon being defeated by the player.

  5. Listen well, Ness. I am about to tell you something so important that you should probably write this down.
Ready? You are a chosen one. Your destiny is not yours alone… It is part of a universal “system”.
  6. In MOTHER 2, Paula’s mom tells Ness not to worry about Paula, because “God is with her”. In EarthBound, this was localized to “She has a guardian angel, it seems.”
It’s not a big deal, and it’s pretty well-known that NOA didn’t want any religious stuff in their games back then, so the change is to be expected. I think the guardian angel line sounds better, anyway. But yeah, there’s no way NOA would’ve let a mention of the Christian God fly in their games back then.
But note that even though she mentions God in MOTHER 2, there are no real serious religious themes in the game. So don’t take this one change out of context and make a big deal out of it 😛
  7. In MOTHER 2, during part of Paula’s first prayer, she says something like, “Please, God, if you’re there…” or possibly even, “Please, God, if you’re real…”
In EarthBound, this religious reference got the smack-down and was trimmed to just, “Please…”
  8. The truth of the universe travels the cosmos like a grain and like a wave and speaks to the universes known as man.
