So, does this mean I have to go back to school now?
~ Son Goku after being turned into a child
You know Shenron, I've never been this tired.
~ Goku before he merges with Shenron

So, you've made quite a mess, 17. What do you say you show your face so I can start cleaning up, now?!
~ Super Saiyan Goku before fighting Super 17

Til we meet again, guys!
~ Son Goku's last words

Then that's what I'll do. I know where Baby's hiding right now, and if everything goes smoothly, Earth and all her people will be back to normal by the end of the day. Mr. Satan, you'll take care of Pan.
~ Super Saiyan 4 Goku before fighting Baby Vegeta

It’s simple. If you want good things to happen in your life, you have to be good.
~ Son Goku

Background

Son Goku is the main protagonist of Dragon Ball. Originally from Planet Vegeta, he was sent to Earth as an infant to escape the destruction of his home world. Found and raised by an elderly martial artist named Son Gohan, Goku grew up training in martial arts. Over the years, he has protected Earth and his universe from numerous powerful enemies and threats.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Son Goku’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Black Star Dragon Saga
Five years after leaving the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament with Majin Buu's reincarnation, Uub, Goku finishes training Uub, and they have just completed testing their abilities against one another in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Soon after, Uub departs from the lookout, and Goku discovers that an accidental wish made by Emperor Pilaf on the Black Star Dragon Balls has transformed him back into a child. As a result, Goku must travel the galaxy to return the Dragon Balls to Earth to prevent the planet from exploding due to the negative energy created by the wish.

After leaving Earth aboard a spaceship designed by Bulma, a piece of the ship falls off, forcing Goku, Trunks, and Pan to crash land on the planet Imecka to gather parts for repairs. Swarmed by merchants, they hide in the Gold Star Hotel, only to realize they are being charged for everything by the second, including the lights. Escaping without paying, they come across the home of an elderly couple and their children, who speak of Don Kee, the planet's oppressive ruler. Don Kee's men soon repossess the couple's house for unpaid debts. Goku suggests fighting Don Kee, but the couple insists it is impossible due to his large army. While returning to the ship, Trunks accidentally drops the Dragon Radar, which is swallowed and integrated by a small robot named T-2006, nicknamed Giru.

Meanwhile, Don Kee's men drag the ship away. Goku tries to use Instant Transmission to teleport them to the ship but fails due to his small body's limitations. Forced to travel on foot, they attempt to recover the ship through stealth, but are discovered when a rock falls on Trunks' head, alerting guards. Pan decides to fight, and Goku moves the ship onto a carrying car while Pan drives it out of the palace. During their escape, Don Kee's henchmen fire a combined Energy Wave at Goku, who deflects it toward Ledgic, Don Kee's right-hand man, who recognizes them as Saiyans. After escaping, they must return to town for more parts due to Pan's "reckless driving."

Back in town, they hide after learning they are on Imecka's most wanted list. While fleeing Don Kee's soldiers, they once again find the old couple, who reveal Don Kee outlawed ship ownership to prevent escape. Frustrated, Pan convinces Goku and Trunks to confront Don Kee directly. They surrender to the police and are brought to the palace, where they incapacitate Gale, Sheela, and Don Kee's guards. Goku blasts his way into Don Kee's throne room, where Ledgic is sent to fight him. Goku defeats Ledgic as a Super Saiyan, and together they force Don Kee to grant free rent and return ships to the people. Don Kee also provides the parts needed to repair their ship, and they depart Imecka.

Their journey continues to an unnamed planet with oversized features, where Goku finds the Four-Star Dragon Ball in a giant's tooth. Next, on planet Gelbo, they locate the Six-Star Dragon Ball in the hair of Princess Leena. However, her fiancé Doma explains that the amphibian creature Zoonama threatens their village, demanding a wife or else he will cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions by shaking his whiskers. Goku agrees to help in exchange for the Dragon Ball. Pan suggests disguising Goku as Leena, but the plan fails, so Trunks poses as her instead. Zoonama, growing impatient, threatens destruction, but Trunks tricks and intoxicates him. When Zoonama drunkenly wiggles his whiskers, it only predicts earthquakes rather than causes them. A massive quake erupts unexpectedly, and Goku uses a Kamehameha to stop a volcano, saving the village and earning the Dragon Ball. As they leave, Bon Para of the Para Brothers steals the ball using telekinesis, prompting Goku and the others to give chase.

The Para Brothers lead them to asteroid Beehay, inhabited by giant worm-like Mouma creatures. The brothers flee to planet Luud, where Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy informs them that Goku has another Dragon Ball aboard his ship, which they failed to steal. The Para Brothers attempt to retrieve it but fall under a hypnotic spell called Para Para Boogie, only to be attacked by Mouma when they awaken. Pan boards their ship to recover the stolen Dragon Ball but accidentally activates autopilot, arriving at Luud, where she is captured and turned into a doll by the evil lord Dolltaki.

Goku arrives with Trunks and kills Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy, who reveals he consists of two parts: his body and a whip that transforms into Mutchie and fights Goku. Trunks finishes Mutchie with the Brave Cannon and rescues Goku. Dolltaki then turns everyone except Goku, Trunks, Pan, and himself into dolls, feeding them to the machine deity Luud. Dolltaki awakens Luud, who takes him and Pan inside to absorb their energy. While Goku and Trunks fight Luud, Pan forces Dolltaki to reveal Luud's weakness: Goku must strike Luud’s mechanical heart from outside while Pan attacks from within simultaneously. After several attempts, Goku destroys Luud, freeing the captives and reclaiming the Dragon Ball. They then leave the planet.

Baby Saga
Arriving on the supposedly deserted planet M-2, the group continues their quest for the Black Star Dragon Balls but falls into a trap by the planet's mutant robot inhabitants. It is revealed that Giru has deceived them all along. Pan escapes and later rescues Goku, who battles the robotic Sigma Force and their leader General Rilldo. Both are captured and taken to Dr. Myuu for study, but Giru changes sides and helps rescue them thanks to a plan by Trunks.

Dr. Myuu's creation, Baby, breaks free after revival but is stopped by Goku and the others. Injured, Dr. Myuu escapes, but Baby's scattered remains reassemble on his skin, reforming Baby. Baby is the last surviving Tuffle, the original inhabitants of Planet Vegeta (Planet Plant), and a machine mutant who claims to be Myuu's master, designed to be revived by Myuu.

Goku, Trunks, and Pan return to Earth to restore the Black Star Dragon Balls, only to discover Baby has infected the population with mind-controlling eggs and taken Vegeta as a host. During a fight with Baby Vegeta, Goku learns he cannot maintain Super Saiyan 3 while in child form. After suffering defeat, Goku discovers Baby's weakness: sensitivity to taunts. Baby uses the Revenge Death Ball, but Kibito Kai saves Goku and brings him to the Sacred World of the Kais.

Old Kai devises a plan to re-grow Goku's tail to solve his energy problem. After a painful process, Goku returns to Planet Tuffle, where Earth's residents had migrated, to confront Baby. Although Goku sustains Super Saiyan 3, he cannot defeat Baby and lies defenseless. Gazing at Earth, Goku transforms into a Golden Great Ape. With Pan's help, he regains control and becomes Super Saiyan 4.

Baby Vegeta is overwhelmed by Super Saiyan 4 but transforms into a Golden Great Ape using Bulma's Blutz Wave Generator. Despite superior speed, Goku is worn down. Old Kai removes Gohan, Goten, and Trunks from Baby's control using Sacred Water, allowing them to channel energy to Goku. Eventually, Goku defeats Baby Vegeta and leaves him vulnerable. Baby tries to escape Planet Tuffle, but Goku destroys him with a Kamehameha, blasting his remains into the sun.

Super 17 Saga
A year after Baby's defeat, Goku participates in the 31st World Martial Arts Tournament, competing in the Junior Division due to a height requirement imposed by Mr. Satan. In the finals, Goku loses when his opponent tickles him while he is distracted talking to Vegeta, causing him to fall out of the ring.

Later, while Goku and his family and friends are eating at home, a badly injured Trunks arrives, reporting that he encountered Android 17, who told him to go to Hell to "set things straight." Goku travels to Hell, where he initially meets Dr. Myuu and Dr. Gero, who promptly leave, frustrating Goku as he finds no way out. Soon after, two of his most formidable past enemies, Cell and Frieza, appear. Goku manages to hold his own against them in his normal state. Recognizing Goku's strength, Cell extends his tail and absorbs Goku, but this only lasts about ten seconds before Goku escapes from Cell’s body.

Following a battle involving Goku, Cell, and Frieza, the two villains demonstrate a new technique called the Hell's Buster: a tornado-like spin that hurls Goku into the deepest part of Hell. There, an old woman subjects Goku to various tortures, ultimately freezing him inside a block of ice.

Meanwhile, Cell and Frieza prepare to finish Goku off with a final attack. However, the move does not affect the living, revealing that Goku cannot be harmed by it despite his frozen state. Listening to their plans, Goku breaks free and retaliates by freezing Cell and Frieza using their own technique, inadvertently shattering them.

Still trapped in Hell, Goku seeks a way out and asks King Yemma for help. King Yemma initially claims ignorance on how to free Goku. Piccolo contacts King Yemma and requests transportation to Hell, but the idea seems absurd to Yemma. To persuade him, Piccolo causes significant destruction in Heaven, prompting King Yemma to relent and transport Piccolo to Goku. With Dende's aid, they open a gate between Hell and Earth, allowing Goku to escape. Upon his return, Goku immediately heads to the battlefield.

There, Goku faces the newly fused Super 17. Though Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 4, Super 17's energy absorption ability and growing strength pose serious challenges. With assistance from Android 18—motivated by revenge against Android 17 for Krillin's death—Goku defeats Super 17 by delivering the Super Dragon Fist through the android's stomach and chest, likely destroying his energy absorption devices. Goku finishes Super 17 off with a Kamehameha blast through his wounded body, causing an explosion that eliminates the threat.

Shadow Dragon Saga
When Shenron is summoned to revive those killed by Super 17, the Dragon Balls crack, and instead of the usual dragon, a cigar-smoking Black Smoke Shenron appears. This dragon splits into seven Shadow Dragons, each containing a cracked Dragon Ball within its body. Goku and his allies engage in fierce battles against these new foes.

After intense struggles, six of the seven Shadow Dragons—Naturon, Rage, Haze, Oceanus, Eis, and Nuova—are defeated. Then, the One-Star Dragon, Syn Shenron, appears as the most powerful of all the Shadow Dragons.

Syn Shenron proves too strong for Super Saiyan 4 Goku, severely beating him, causing Goku to lose his Super Saiyan 4 form and fall unconscious. Goku's friends lend him their energy, allowing him to transform into Super Full Power Saiyan 4, surpassing Syn. However, Syn absorbs the remaining Dragon Balls, becoming Omega Shenron.

Even as an Ultra Full Power Saiyan 4, Goku cannot defeat Omega Shenron. He combines two of his strongest attacks into the Dragon Hammer, but Omega endures it. When Vegeta, also a Super Saiyan 4, joins the battle, they still struggle to overcome Omega. Vegeta proposes they fuse, and Goku agrees, noting it will be "special." The fusion creates Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Though powerful, Gogeta fails to finish Omega before the fusion wears off due to elapsed time.

Later, Goku reverts to his base child form as his power drains. After being seemingly struck down by Omega's Negative Karma Ball, Goku calls on Earth's inhabitants to lend him their energy. When that proves insufficient, he asks King Kai to gather energy from across the universe, forming the Super Ultra Spirit Bomb. This final attack succeeds in destroying Omega Shenron.

With Earth’s people witnessing this victory, they finally recognize Goku as a true hero. The original Shenron reappears, declaring no more wishes will be granted for some time. After persuading Shenron to grant one last wish—to revive all those killed by Super 17 and the Shadow Dragons—Goku accompanies the dragon.

Before departing, Goku entrusts Vegeta with the protection of Earth and all its inhabitants, passing on the role of defender. He also visits Krillin, recently revived by the wish, and the two share a final fight before Goku leaves with Shenron. Goku later visits Hell to apologize to Piccolo for the troubles he caused, promising to remember him always. With these final matters settled, Goku disappears alongside Shenron.

A century later, an elderly Pan watches the World Martial Arts Tournament and spots a familiar face in the stands: her grandfather Goku, now grown once again and without his tail. When she tries to follow him, he vanishes. With Earth at peace, Goku departs, but the narrator assures he will return whenever Earth faces danger. Goku is last seen flying into the sky, grasping his Power Pole, calling the Flying Nimbus, and soaring off, shouting, "’Til we meet again, guys!"

Powers and Techniques

All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent.

All previous abilities.

After Goku absorbed the Dragon Balls and possibly gained Shenron's abilities, he possibly obtains the following:

Equipment

  • Power Pole: A red magical staff originally owned by Korin and eventually was inherited by Goku. One of the only heirlooms from his adopted Grandpa Gohan, it became a signature tool for Goku throughout his childhood. Extremely durable and resilient, it is blessed with the unique power to extend and retract to vast lengths at the user's will. Apart from aid in fighting, the Power Pole also serves as the only non-flying means to reach The Lookout.
  • Flying Nimbus: A mystic yellow cloud. Originally a gift from Master Roshi, after it was destroyed by Tambourine, Goku received a replacement from Korin, who created them. It is a blazingly fast cloud that can carry its traveler wherever the rider wishes and also be summoned from seemingly anywhere on Earth. However, the cloud will only carry those voids of any negative thoughts. All others will instantly pass through it like any cloud.
  • Dragon Radar: An invention of Bulma made to track down Dragon Balls. While Goku and other people can sense the Dragon Balls' energy in a general area, the Dragon Radar can pinpoint their exact location from across the entire planet. This let Goku and his friends track all the Dragon Balls within days rather than years, or hours with teleportation.
  • Gill: Gill, originally known as T2006 or DB4649T2006RS, is a Machine Mutant that accompanies Goku, Pan, and Trunks on their quest to find the Black Star Dragon Balls. After eating the Dragon Radar, the radar itself appears on Giru's back.

Notable Techniques

  • Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper: A technique taught to Goku by Grandpa Gohan which employs one of three attack styles; either a closed-fist assault, a two-finger jabbing assault, or an open-palm thrust assault. It was Goku's signature attack early on during his childhood, soon afterwards being replaced with the Kamehameha.
  • Tail Attack: A technique used by those who have tail in order to attack their opponents. They can use it to whip or constrict the opponent. Goku uses this to break free from Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Double Axe Hand: Goku cups his hands together and reels back, then slams his fists on the opponent.
  • Eight-Arm Fist: A physical technique that involves its user moving their arms fast enough that they seemingly have eight of them, allowing them to attack and defend themselves much more efficiently. Used to counter Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Crazy Fist: A distraction technique used by Goku and designed to confuse and taunt the opponent. Pretending to be a wild uncontrollable dog or monkey, Goku catches his opponent off guard, and eventually knocks him out with a swift kick by jumping from behind. Goku uses this in reaction to Jackie Chun's Drunken Fist.
  • Tornado!: After calling the name of the attack, Goku spins while rushing on the opponent to attack him/her. Used against Nam.
  • Afterimage Technique: Goku creates perfect replica afterimages of himself to give the illusion of him still being in a location making it difficult for the opponent to actually harm his true self.
  • Mid-Air Stop: While falling to the ground, Goku exhales his breath like an explosive blast to stop his decent. Goku uses this technique against King Chappa in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament preliminaries.
  • Tail Helicopter: Goku swings his tail in a circle fast enough to hover and fly freely. Used only once, in his fight against Jackie Chun in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
  • Agile Style: After his training under Kami, Goku could remove the Weighted portions Turtle School Uniform to increase his power level and agility due to being no longer incumbered by the heavy weights allowing him to utilize a more agile fighting style hence its name. Goku first used it during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and later when he confronted his brother Raditz alongside Piccolo. According to Raditz's Scouter, Goku's power level rose from 334 to 416 indicating the weight removal alone increased his power level by 82. This state was named in Dragon Ball Legends (albeit in relation to Piccolo & Pikkon's use of Agile Style) where it is the "base" form used by Goku (DBL22-01S) which represents Goku from the period during which he fought Raditz.
  • Dragonthrow: Goku grabs his opponent's arm, leg, tail, or antenna, then he spins and throws them away.
  • Meteor Combination: First, Goku charges at the opponent and elbows them away. Then, he attacks the opponent with a powerful barrage of kicks and punches, ending with a heavy punch to their stomach. When the opponent lays on the ground paralyzed, Goku jumps up in the air and fires a Super Kamehameha down at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Meteor Smash: Goku punches the opponent in the stomach. Then, he punches the opponent away and flies after them to right hook kick them in their face. Finally, Goku axe kicks the side of the opponent's head, knocking them away and inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Bōjutsu: The art of wielding a staff which Goku utilizes when wielding his Power Pole. Goku learned it from the Power Pole's previous owner, his adoptive Grandpa Gohan. Goku's Bōjutsu skills are so great that he can use his Power Pole to deflect bullets as shown during his assault on Muscle Tower. Additionally, due to the Power Pole's mystical length changing properties, his attack range with the Power Pole is much greater than an average staff.
  • Kaoi-ken Finish: First, Goku charges at the opponent and kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up after the opponent and double axe-handle punches them down to the ground. Next, he powers up to his Kaio-ken technique as he charges down at the opponent and double-punches them in their back. Finally, Goku quickly lands on the ground and catches the opponent on their back before throwing them onto the ground, inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Kaoi-Ken Attack: Goku powers up to Kaio-ken x3 as he charges at the opponent and roundhouse kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up in the air and punches the opponent away. Next, he flies up over the opponent and down behind to double kick them further up into the air. Finally, Goku flies up into the air around the opponent and hook kicks them down into the ground, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
  • Ki Blast: The most basic energy attack, Goku creates a small form of energy that he blasts at an opponent, usually he uses this to keep his distance from an enemy or to distract them so he can land another attack.
  • Kiai: A technique where Goku affects the air currents around him with ki to produce powerful shockwaves in order to strike the opponent at mid-range.
  • Kamehameha: Goku's signature move since obtaining it. It unleashes a powerful and long-stretching blue energy blast from his cupped hands. Goku first learns the move as a kid after witnessing Master Roshi using it. It can be charged to compete with practically any enemy attack. Since mastering this technique, Goku has continued to improve on it and develop new variations of it.
  • Spirit Bomb: Easily Goku's most powerful techniques and arguably the strongest in the series, it allows Goku to channel ki from all sources of life that he can detect and focus it all into a single energy ball. It was taught to him by King Kai during his training for the upcoming battle against Vegeta and Nappa. Over time, Goku continually learned to expand the range of which he could gather energy, thereby increasing both the size and power of the Spirit Bomb. He reserves this technique as a last-ditch effort for only the most powerful of foes.
  • Instant Transmission: Goku learns this technique on the Planet Yardrat after his battle with Frieza by learning Spirit Control - which also allowed him to sense ki from a much greater distance. This technique allows him to teleport to any location so long as he can find an energy source to home onto. However, it also greatly extends his ability to sense energy. Noticeably in Yo Son Goku, he seemingly improved on the technique as transports to the radish field without sensing anyone, possibly because he had accurate enough knowledge of where it is.
  • Solar Flare: Goku places his hands close to the center of his face with the fingers spread toward his eyes. He then calls out the name of the technique, which provokes a white light to fire out and blind everything watching except him, since he is projecting the light.

  • Super Saiyan: Goku achieves this form in a rage after Frieza killed Krillin. In this form, Goku's muscle and height slight increase and his skin turns lighter. His eyes become noticeably sterner and more defined with green eyes. His hair becomes blond and stands with no loose strands. His power also generates a yellow aura. In the anime, when unleashing the full intensity of his power, Goku's aura also produces some slight electrical sparks. Goku's demeanor is greatly affected by this form, making him more aggressive and irritable. In the anime, Goku learned to access this form's raw might without actually transforming to conserve ki. After his fight with Beerus, Goku realizes that fully mastering this form would eventually raise his level more than his higher Super Saiyan forms, and sap less strength and ki. A thing to note is that in his initial appearances as a Super Saiyan, the hair looks less detailed. When he became a Super Saiyan Full Power, the hair looks incredibly detailed and nice-looking.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Goku achieved this form at some time after Cell's defeat while in the Other World. In this form, Goku gains some changes; his hair becomes spikier, his forehead has only three bangs over it, making his hair more defined than his other previous Super Saiyan forms. His muscles also become more defined, and his aura also generates electricity surrounding his body, while the aura grows markedly larger and more vibrant. Since gaining greater forms, Goku reserves this form for opponents he takes semi-seriously.
  • Super Saiyan 3: Goku's strongest form in the original manga and anime. Goku achieved this level after years of training in Other World, where he could put unlimited energy into this form. In this form, his hair reaches down to his thighs and his eyebrows vanish completely while making the forehead and eye ridges larger and more prominent. His muscle mass grows noticeable larger more defined while his eyes gain green irises. His aura also becomes rounder with larger electrical sparks. Goku first used this form against Innocent Buu during the Majin Buu Saga, where he had a slight advantage over the Majin. However, this form is extremely draining in terms of energy due to the living world having less energy to siphon. This made him tire fast and even cut Goku's time left on Earth from hours to a mere thirty minutes after using this form for a short time. When attempting to gather enough energy to defeat Kid Buu, he was unable to sustain it as he had not taken into account the strain overcoming his living body, and soon reverted to his base state. Altogether, these heavy disadvantages make it impractical to use this form out of the afterlife and even more while alive.

  • Little: With the Black Star Dragon Balls, Emperor Pilaf unintentionally wishes Goku back into an eleven-year-old child in the beginning of Dragon Ball GT. In this state, he is known as Little Goku. While as a kid, depending on the source, Goku became far more limited than he was as an adult, no longer being "the mightiest who can do anything", though according to GT Perfect Files his power did not seem to drop, his stamina was weakened to the point that he was only able to hold the power of Super Saiyan 3 for but a few seconds. At the same time, it inhibited his overall efficiency in battle, making it difficult to properly use more advanced techniques he learned in later years, as his small body wasn't properly conditioned for them. With Old Kai's aid, he was able to get his tail back, which not only allowed for easy access to his normal Super Saiyan forms, but later allowed him to transform into Golden Great Ape and Super Saiyan 4. After Piccolo gives Goku all of his power, he became able to use more advanced techniques again in his child form. At the end of Dragon Ball GT, 100 years after the defeat of the Shadow Dragons, Goku is again seen as an adult.
  • Super Saiyan: After being wished into a child, Goku can still transform into a Super Saiyan. However, he is unable to maintain the form for as long as he can in his adult body, though still long enough to endure a grueling battle After his tail is restored, he became able to maintain the form for as long as he can normally (in his adult body). With the later return of Goku's tail, this and his higher normal Super Saiyan forms would also make the fur of his tail turn yellow when using the said form's full power. The Dragon Ball Collectible Card Game treats this form as a separate form from the normal Super Saiyan form, referring to it as the "GT Super Saiyan" form. In Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, Goku is called Super Little Goku while in this form.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Goku uses this form as a kid only once, to guard against an attack by General Rilldo. However, he briefly appears in the form while powering up to transform into Super Saiyan 3 while fighting Baby Vegeta. GT Goku has this form in Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle.
  • Super Saiyan 3: After being wished back into a child, Goku can still transform into a Super Saiyan 3. However, he can only maintain the form for mere seconds. Goku noted this problem came from his child body being too underdeveloped. This problem was overcome by help from Old Kai to regrow his tail. This let him properly adjust to Super Saiyan 3 and conserving most of his energy reserves, enabling him to quickly enter said form and use for much longer durations. After reaching higher level, Goku stopped using Super Saiyan 3 altogether as his newer form was overall more beneficial with less drawbacks.
  • Golden Great Ape: Goku achieves this form in Dragon Ball GT, after Old Kai helped Goku to regrow his tail, allowing him to once again become a Great Ape. When he looks at the Earth during the Baby Saga, its sufficient substitute Blutz Waves allows Goku to take the said form, and soon after combining the Great Ape form with his Super Saiyan power to create this much bigger and more powerful form. While initially as feral and violent as ever in this massive state, Goku's power proved too much for Baby-Vegeta, who previously easily defeated Super Saiyan 3 Goku. In this state Goku can unleash both strong energy blasts and fireballs from his mouth. Eventually, Pan reached Goku's consciousness, letting him regain his clarity and self-control. Upon doing so, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 4.
  • Super Saiyan 4: Goku is also referred to as Super Goku 4 in this form as it is not a traditional Super Saiyan form. This form is achieved by Goku after mastering Golden Great Ape. As noted by Vegeta, Goku's usage of Super Saiyan 4 is unique, able to access whenever he desires without a bolster. This form's power can overcome the Black Star Dragon Balls' power changing Goku into a child, returning him to his true adult self, though this however only lasts while the form is being used. The power of this form is vastly greater to Super Saiyan 3 with less drawbacks. In addition, Goku's overall appearance changes yet again. His muscles become larger, and he grows considerably taller, almost as tall as Piccolo. The hair is even more wild and longer, reaching his mid-back. He gains golden-yellow irises and the pigments around his eyes become lined in red. His tail grows longer, and he gains scarlet fur covering from shoulder-to-toe, excluding chest and hands. His clothes change from his childhood garb, leaving him only dressed below the waist (excluding his armbands). His wristbands and stockings turn blue while his sash changes to a stone blue color.
    • Super Full Power Saiyan 4: A special state that is obtained by gathering enough energy to push his body well-past his normal limits. Goku first discovered this state against Baby Vegeta when his Golden Great Ape form proved too powerful. To battle the mutant Tuffle, Goku acquired the combined energy from Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Pan to unlock this state. In addition to drastically augmenting his might, it likewise equally enhances his senses, letting him react to practically any threat. He is also shown able to absorb enemy energy attacks, nullifying their damage. This state has on occasion demonstrated a radiating red glow from his entire body. In this state he surpasses all but the most powerful enemy in Dragon Ball GT.
  • Change: After being apparently killed by Omega Shenron, Goku undergoes a change and is no longer the Goku he was before. In this state Goku is cloaked in an aura that won't let any attack near him. This is due to his wish to essentially become one with Shenron.

Other

Standard Tactics: Goku is a trained and gifted martial artists who has always kept the same tactics when entering battle. Goku will size up his opponent to see where their strengths and weaknesses lay, see how strong they are, and dish out various martial arts attacks and techniques to overwhelm his opponent. Goku will never immedieatly go all out from the start unless he fully needs to and will usually start with warm ups.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[244].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.

Trivia

  • From his mid-teens to early twenties, Goku was a famous celebrity on Earth for his defeat of King Piccolo and his later victory over Piccolo Jr. at the 23rd World Tournament. Later, Goku appears to have been largely forgotten in favor of the following World Tournament champion, Mr. Satan (most likely due to Mr. Satan using success to become a rich and famous media hound in contrast to Goku living a humble and quiet life away from the public's eye). However sometime after the defeat of the Shadow Dragons and before the 64th World Martial Arts Tournament, in GT, Goku is once again a revered hero as a giant statue of him is displayed in the stadium.[245] Additionally, though the general public may have forgotten his heroics, people like King Furry and World Tournament Announcer do as they have witnessed to his exploits.

Explanations

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: What about the planetary feats in Dragon Ball?

A: Planetary feats are normally done through their strongest charged blast, where they can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[246], with blasts capable of[247] seriously damaging/destroying[248] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[249], though they themselves are never capable of leaving this unscathed.

Frieza throws a destroy the planet death ball attack but it doesn't destroy the planet. Goku then interestingly notes the reason the planet didn't blow up is because Frieza was too scared of getting caught in the blast[250] . Vegeta's final flash is noted it's going to destroy the planet and Perfect Cell, who is beyond Vegeta, couldn't tank the blast and had to dodge it last second or it would've killed him[251]. Goku's kamehameha was going to destroy the earth and Cell cannot tank this blast, needing to regenerate[252]. Semi-Perfect Cell explosion was consistently noted it was going to destroy the planet and Gohan and it killed Goku[253]. Ultimate Gohan dies to an attack that destroys the earth, his guard was up too since this was when he was fighting Super Buu[254]. Kid Buu shoots a blast trying to destroy the planet, with Vegeta noting he's going to take himself out with it if he lets it off[255]. In Dragon Ball GT, Great Ape Baby Vegeta shoots a super galick gun that he claims will destroy Earth, when Goku is hit by it, he is knocked out to the point that he can't move for a good while, Elder Kai and Shin later state that Baby is going to shoot another blast that will destroy the planet on, greatly injuring Baby if he's caught in the Blast and will kill everyone on the planet if done[256]. Frieza destroyed the entire earth, killing Vegeta in the process[257]. In the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Gohan tells Goku that he doesn't need to hold anything back and can go all out because anything that happens to the Earth can be restored with Dende and the Dragon Balls. Yet, none of Goku's all out attacks destroy the planet but just heavily causes shockwaves around it[258]. Semi-Perfect Cell unleashes a several blast that destroys several islands Android 16 notes that the attacks are just strong enough to not kill Android 18[259].

In the fight of Trunks vs. Mecha Frieza, who is far stronger than his final form, Mecha Frieza immediately goes for his strongest attack, the Supernova. In the original Z anime King Kai even states this is ten times stronger than the power he used on Namek:

  • DBZ Kai Version[260].
  • Original DBZ Anime Version[261]. The attack is directly noted that it could destroy the planet, but doesn't because Trunks catches it, when Mecha Frieza proceeds to detonate it, the explosion is massive but the planet is still intact, implying Frieza must target the core in order to destroy the planet.

  198. "To be honest, in GT episode 63, just before the final episode, a big change comes over Goku. Afterward, Goku still continues the battle, but what’s different from before is that he’s cloaked in an aura that won’t let any attack near him.
It might be that he died there, or it might be that he became something else entirely. I’ll leave that decision to the imaginations of everyone who watched. However, the Goku up to that point that everyone knows clearly does not appear after that.
In the world of Dragon Ball, Goku had already died multiple times, and up till then, each time he appeared with a halo over his head. However, I didn’t want to go with the usual concept of, “even when he dies, he comes right back to life”. I wanted the viewers to picture “death” in that way, and feel a sadness close to it in reality. So I had a “change” come over Goku."
