Ortega

From The Codex

Ha ha! Shocking to find the great Cornell helpless in a place like this? Even a man-wolf is nothing but a trapped dog in a cage. Uh huh. I know. It has been one year since I lost to you. And Ada, why, she has really blossomed into a beautiful woman. She will be a perfect sacrifice to offer Count Dracula for these powers! You will find everything out soon enough, Cornell. Soon enough.
~ Ortega to Cornell

Toooo late, Cornell. Why, you've lost before the fight has even begun. Still, you've always kept your promises, so I knew you would come. Now we can settle this business once and for all. Ooh, it feels like my head's been laid open. I can't restrain my power. Oh, yes. You used to be a step quicker than I at one time. You, the only man-beast who can manipulate the seal. A year ago when we went head to head your eyes were as cold as the moon. They were eyes that saw a weaker opponent. You did not respect me... But the man you see before you today is changed. Changed from that time. Changed I say! <pant, pant> Cornell, are you really so worried about Ada's well-being? Why do you go to such lengths? Why, you and Ada are virtually strangers. You are not blood relatives. The sacrificial rites should already have begun by now. If you plan on rescuing Ada, you'd better hurry or you'll be too late! However, first we've got a score to settle between ourselves! At last you show me your true colors. But do you think this is all I've got? Ha ha ha ha! Oh, what a great feeling! Now I am ready for battle. Are...you...ready...Cor...nell?
~ Ortega to Cornell

<pant, gasp> It appears that I am still not the match for you, Cornell. I thought I could surpass our strength with Dracula's powers. Ada is being kept in the clock tower. She has not been sacrificed yet. I wanted to settle this score even if it meant disobeying Dracula. So I have no regrets, now that I have fought the true you. I only regret what I did to the villagers, but it is too late for that now. At the very least, if you could... ... save that girl, Ada. Get away, Cornell. My power is going out of control. I can't stop it.
~ Ortega to Cornell

Background

Ortega is a character from Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. He is both the closest friend and the fiercest rival of Cornell, hailing from the same village and sharing the same man-beast heritage. Ortega plays a significant role in Cornell's storyline, where he takes on the role of a recurring antagonist. His actions and motives are central to the conflict, driven by his ambition to surpass Cornell and his ultimate decision to align himself with darker forces.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ortega’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Early History
Ortega and Cornell grew up together in the same village, both being man-beasts. While they were friends, they also had a competitive relationship, with Ortega constantly finding himself outdone by Cornell. This ongoing rivalry caused Ortega significant frustration, as he always seemed to fall short compared to his friend. Driven by this feeling of inadequacy, Ortega began searching for a way to become stronger and to gain the power that would allow him to surpass Cornell.

This search eventually led him to darkness, as he discovered that Dracula was the only being capable of granting him the power he sought. Dracula agreed to give Ortega the strength he desired, but in return, he demanded that Ortega assist his demons in their mission to kidnap Cornell’s sister Ada and destroy their village. Ortega was also instructed to prevent Cornell from rescuing Ada. Driven by his desire for power and to finally end his rivalry with Cornell, Ortega accepted Dracula's offer, making a pact with the dark lord. While he gained immense power through the deal, he lost his humanity in the process.

Events in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Ortega first encounters Cornell again after Cornell has made his way through the Forest of Silence and reached the Castle Wall. In this confrontation, Ortega tells Cornell of his involvement in Ada's kidnapping and the role he played in the events that led to it. Cornell has a difficult time accepting the truth of what has happened, and Ortega, sensing that it's not yet time for their battle, chooses to leave, not elaborating further on his motives.

Later in the game, Ortega makes another appearance. This time, he traps Cornell in a cage and forces him to battle a massive werewolf, one that is now under Dracula's control. After Cornell defeats the werewolf, he discovers that Ortega has once again vanished, leaving him with no clear explanation. However, the final confrontation is fast approaching.

At last, Ortega chooses to face Cornell at the top of the room of clocks, a large space that sets the stage for their climactic battle. The two exchange heated words, and Ortega, showing the full extent of his new powers, transforms into a fearsome, three-headed Chimera. He attacks Cornell with all of his strength, using his powerful new form to its fullest.

Despite the intensity of their battle, Cornell proves to be the stronger of the two warriors, defeating Ortega and inflicting severe injuries in the process. As Ortega reverts to his human form, he realizes that his life is coming to an end. In his final moments, he tells Cornell where to find Ada, admitting that while he doesn't regret his decision to join Dracula in order to witness the full power of Cornell's Man-Beast abilities, he does regret his role in attacking the village. He acknowledges that it's far too late for him to make amends. Unable to control his powers any longer, Ortega self-destructs, his body exploding as he throws himself off the tower in his final act. Before his death, he warns Cornell to stay away from him, and it's suggested that Ortega had kept Ada hidden away in the Clock Tower, preventing her from falling into Dracula's hands.

Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[39]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[40]. With their souls being completely free from time[41]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[42]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[43]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[44], becoming stronger when it's night time[45]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[46] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[47]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[48]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[49]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[50], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[51], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[52]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[53]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[54]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[55]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[56], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[57]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[58]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[59]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[60], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[61], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[62], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[63]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[64]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[65], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[66]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[67]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[68]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[69]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[70]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[71]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[72], with their souls being completely free from time[73]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[74], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[75]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[76]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[77], with their souls being completely free from time[78], with fate being a truth wound by time[79])

Martial Arts (Ortega is noted to be a master of martial arts[84]), Enhanced Senses (Man-wolf's have an acute sense of smell to where Cornell used it to track the scent of his sister's blood[85]. Cornell used this ability to smell that Ada is in an area[86]. Cornell used this ability to tell a human child from smell[87]), Teleportation (Teleported behind Cornell[88]), Transformation (Transformative Arsneal; Can enter into his Chimera state, granting him immense power[89]), Statistics Boost (The manbeast can enter in a Werewolf state, where their attack and defense power are both greatly increased[90]), Sealing (The man-beasts, choosing to live harmoniously with humans, sealed away their enormous magical powers to prevent them from being used[91]), Self-Destruction (If a man-beast overuses their power, they will self-destruct, leaving nothing of their body left[92]), Magic & Principle Manipulation (The man-beast werewolf form is through the magic of the ancients[93], where magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[94]), Electricity Manipulation (Had electricity form around his body upon transforming[95]).

Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can enter Dracula's Castle without experiencing any adverse effects[96]) The Castle Abilities Include:

Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[97], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the cloud srotate at a fast speed[98]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[99]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[100]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[101]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[102]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[103]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[104], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[105]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[106]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[107]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[108]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[109]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[110]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[111]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[112]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[113]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[114] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[115]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[116]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[117]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[118]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[119]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[120], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[121] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[122], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[123], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[124], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[125], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[126]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[127]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[128], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[129]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[130]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[131], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[132]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[133], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[134]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[135])
