"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Worm, you dare oppose the power of darkness? Is it death you seek?
~ Gilles de Rais

Background

Gilles de Rais is an antagonist featured in Castlevania (N64) and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. A powerful vampire and one of Count Dracula's most trusted subordinates, Gilles serves as a high-ranking figure in a carefully orchestrated scheme to resurrect the Dark Lord.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Gilles de Rais’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Gilles de Rais makes his first appearance in the opening sequence of Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, where he is seen traversing the castle halls, lantern in hand. He ascends to the Castle Keep, joining Actrise and Death as they perform the ritual to resurrect Dracula in 1844.

He is later referenced during the Villa stage, where Mary Oldrey reveals that her husband, J. A. Oldrey, fell victim to Gilles and was turned into a vampire. Gilles himself confronts Cornell in the crypt beneath the Villa's garden maze, initiating a battle. However, he is caught off guard by Cornell's strength and retreats when Actrise intervenes, halting the confrontation. Before leaving, both Gilles and Actrise ominously hint that Cornell may prove to be a worthy opponent for Dracula. Gilles reappears in the final scene of Cornell’s story, where Cornell’s werewolf essence is used in a ritual to reincarnate Dracula within the body of Malus.

Gilles de Rais returns in the events of Reinhardt and Carrie's quests in 1852, this time under the guise of Dracula. While the English versions of the games do not clearly reveal his identity, the official strategy guide confirms that he is "Vampire Gildre," one of Dracula's servants. Disguised as his master, Gilles attempts to thwart the adventurers in the Castle Wall. His deception ends when he is confronted and ultimately defeated during the climactic battle in the Castle Keep.

Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[25], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[26]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[27]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[28]. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[45]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[46], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[47]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[48]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[49]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[50], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[51], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[52], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[53]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[54]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[55], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[56]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[57]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[58]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[59]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[60]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[61]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[62], with their souls being completely free from time[63]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[64], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[65]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[66]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[67], with their souls being completely free from time[68], with fate being a truth wound by time[69])

Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Vampires will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[79]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[80]. With their souls being completely free from time[81]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[111]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[112], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[113], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[114], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[115]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[116]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[117], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[118]), Law Manipulation (Vampires can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[119]), Power Modification (Vampire's alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[120]. Where even if one "kills" a vampire they will simply just come back as they are not bound to death[130]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[131], with their souls being completely free from time[132], with fate being a truth wound by time[133]), Law Manipulation (Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[134])

Disguise Mastery (Gilles disguised himself as Dracula[139], with the real Dracula being Malus and Gilles merely being his servant[140]), Flight (Flies before Carrie and Reinhardt to welcome them to his castle[141]), Teleportation (Disappeared into mist[142]), Shockwave Generation (Unleashes a massive shockwave that travels outwards and harms any enemy it touches[143]), Curtain Fire (Multi-Directional) & Fire Manipulation (Shoots out a volley of fireballs at his opponents[144]), Animal Manipulation (He can send out bats that are on fire[145]), Vacuum Manipulation (Can utilize his fog to pull one in like a vaccum[146]).

Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can fight and act all the way into Draucla's throne room without any adverse effects done to him[147]) The Castle Abilities Include:

Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[148], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the cloud srotate at a fast speed[149]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[150]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[151]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[152]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[153]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[154]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[155], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[156]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[157]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[158]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[159]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[160]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[161]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[162]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[163]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[164]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[165] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[166]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[167]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[168]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[169]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[170]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[171], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[172] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[173], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[174], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[175], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[176], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[177]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[178]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[179], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[180]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[181]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[182], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[183]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[184], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[185]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[186])

Equipment

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

  • Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[187] regenerate[188], from any kind[189] of damage due to it absorbing blood[190].
  • Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
  • Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
  • Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.

  • Claw Slash: De Rais slashes Cornell with his claws. The attack is stronger at night and weaker during the day.
  • Vampiric Bite: De Rais bites Cornell to drain his health and replenish his own. If Cornell does not break free in time, his status changes to "vampire."
  • Flame Bursts: De Rais emits multiple bursts of flame as long-range attacks.
  • Evasion: De Rais is adept at evading attacks, either leaping into the air or sidestepping to avoid damage. If close enough, he will attempt to bite Cornell after evading.

  • Teleportation: De Rais turns into mist and vanishes, teleporting multiple times before reappearing behind the hero. If the player is too close or turns abruptly, he may vanish again.
  • Homing Fireballs/Flaming Bats: De Rais conjures four homing fireballs (in Legacy of Darkness) or four flaming bats (in Castlevania 64).
  • Vampiric Drain: De Rais draws the hero to him and sucks their blood, draining the player’s health and replenishing his own. If the player does not break free in time, their status changes to "vampire."
  • Shockwaves: De Rais emits two shockwaves, one low to the ground and the other at waist height.
  • Sustained Fire Blast: De Rais releases a sustained blast of fire, resembling a weaker version of Dracula’s Demonic Megiddo.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Villa's Crypt:
    • Slashing with claws, with increased strength at night and reduced power during the day.
    • Biting to drain ones health while restoring his own. Prolonged biting can result in the opponent becoming a vampire.
    • Emitting bursts of flame for long-range attacks.
    • Gilles primarily fights at close range, using flame bursts when distant. He is highly evasive, leaping or sidestepping attacks and often attempting to bite if close.
  • Castle Keep:
    • After a cutscene, de Rais transforms into mist and teleports, often reappearing behind the hero. He may vanish again if the player gets too close or turns suddenly.
    • Conjuring four homing fireballs (in Legacy of Darkness) or four flaming bats (in Castlevania).
    • Drawing the opponent close and sucking their blood, draining their health while replenishing his own. If not broken free from in time, the player becomes a vampire.
    • Emitting two shockwaves, one low to the ground and the other at waist height.
    • Releasing a sustained blast of fire (similar to a weaker version of Dracula's Demonic Megiddo).
    • Like Dracula battles in previous games, de Rais only takes damage when struck on the head. On higher difficulty settings, the player must jump to hit him, or all attacks will miss.

Trivia

Gilles de Rais by Éloi Firmin Féron (1835).
  • This character is based on the real Gilles de Rais, a knight and lord from Brittany, Anjou and Poitou, a leader in the French army, and a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc. Although he was not associated with vampire legends, he was convicted and executed as a confessed serial killer of hundreds of children, a crime ascribed to his in-game accomplice, Actrise.
    • He was also accused of being a sorcerer by the Catholic Church (he apparently did attempt to summon a demon with the help of a coerced priest), and a werewolf in other stories.
    • The real Gilles de Rais is associated with the legend of Bluebeard, a French folktale of a wealthy man in the habit of murdering his wives, and as such his in-game rendering sports a blue beard.
  • The PAL version of Castlevania 64 features voice acting for Gilles de Rais in the Castle Wall and Castle Keep stages. However, in the American version, he only has voice acting in the Castle Wall.
    • This could have been due to the PAL version having been released about four months after the US version, allowing the developers to add extra features to it. However, this is unconfirmed.
  • Gilles' voice actor is uncredited in Castlevania 64, although it is believed he was voiced by Scott McCulloch, who also voiced the Narrator in that game.
  • In Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness, it turns out that Gilles de Rais himself decided to become a host for Dracula so he could release his master's soul after he died and reincarnate it into Malus's body.
  • Largely because of Castlevania 64 misleading the player into thinking Gilles de Rais is Dracula unless specific requirements are met for the true ending, Gilles de Rais is the only Dracula-like enemy to utilize Dracula's leitmotif "Dance of Illusions".
  • A version of Gilles de Rais was planned to appear in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but was scrapped during development[210].
  • The 2003 horror film, Dracula II: Ascension, part of a trilogy which identified Dracula as the disciple Judas Iscariot, had Dracula stating a list of the names he had gone by through the centuries, one of which being Gilles de Rais.

  109. WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.

  163. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "From the time they stepped into the mountains, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent in the air. Even though it is still far away, their bodies seemed to squeal [run away].
There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children."
  164. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.
And her body was telling her [do not go] as her leg muscles were petrified like stone."

  169. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "“Uh……aa……Mi……chelle……”
That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."
