Chara
Background
"Chara", the demon that comes when people call its name. They are the official first fallen human & the adoptive sibling of Asriel Dreemurr. They devised a plan with Asriel for him to get their soul and break through the barrier. Chara's motives in this situation are uncertain, but upon entering the golden flower village and the humans seeing Asriel holding a dead human they attack him with little resistance from Asriel ending in his & Chara's death.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Chara’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Chara can be first seen during the introduction scene of Undertale, climbing Mt. Ebott, tripping over a root and falling into the Ruins. During the fight against Asriel, a continuation of this scene can be seen, where Asriel helps Chara lift themself up after the fall after hearing their call for help, and takes them to his parents. Chara was taken in by Toriel and Asgore as a second child and was treated with respect equal to their biological son. Chara and Asriel became not only siblings, but also best friends, and monsters spoke of how Chara filled the Underground with hope.[2] One day, after becoming terminally ill from consuming buttercups, Chara expressed the desire to see the Golden Flowers found in their home village.[3] After their death, Chara's SOUL was absorbed by Asriel, and they shared control over a body. Chara carried their own corpse across the barrier and wanted to use their full power to destroy the humans that were attacking them. Asriel resisted Chara, which ultimately led to the humans killing the fusion of the two SOULs. Chara's motives in this situation are uncertain. In the fourth True Lab tape, Asriel says "Y...yeah! We'll be strong! We'll free everyone.", and in the fifth "Six, right? We just have to get six..." In the Genocide Route, Flowey tells Chara that they should finish what they started and free everyone. Flowey also adds, "Then... let's let them see what humanity is REALLY like. That despite it all... This world is still 'kill or be killed!!". Asriel tells the protagonist that he came up with this philosophy because his resistance to Chara had led to both of them being killed. At the end of the Genocide Route, Chara says little about Asriel's resistance other than, "At first, I was so confused. Our plan had failed, hadn't it?" It can be inferred, then, that Chara's ingestion of the flowers was intentional, and done in order to give Asriel access to the power of their soul so that Asriel could travel to the surface and collect the human souls needed to break the Barrier and free the monsters. Chara's body was originally laid to rest in a coffin in the basement of the castle, where the bodies of the other fallen humans would later be put. When Toriel left Asgore, she carried Chara's body to the Ruins and gave them a proper burial.[4] In the Genocide Route, Chara says that the protagonist's "determination" and "human soul" awakened them from death. There is evidence to suggest that some narration, as well as descriptions of certain actions and events, is by Chara themself. However, the narrator throughout the entirety of Undertale is up to speculation. Neutral Route
The protagonist also hears Chara's name in their dreams. If the protagonist sleeps in the bed in Toriel's home, Asgore's voice can be heard as he pleads, "<Name>, please... Wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters." When the protagonist first falls into the Garbage Dump, Asriel's first words to Chara appear on the screen, narrated with Asriel's voice byte. True Pacifist Route
Towards the end of the fight against Asriel, when the protagonist calls out "someone else"'s name, flashbacks of Chara and Asriel play. They show Chara's fall into the Underground, Asriel's discovery of Chara, and the royal family spending time with Chara. After the fight, Asriel recognizes the protagonist as Frisk. During the epilogue, Frisk may return to the room containing the coffins of the other humans. This leads to the discovery that all of the coffins are empty and that there are mummy wrappings at the bottom of Chara's coffin. Genocide Route
The only instance in the game where Chara makes an in-person physical appearance is at the end of the Genocide Route. They appear as an overworld sprite and speak into the fourth wall. Chara could be speaking directly to the player in this sequence. After this appearance, Chara reveals that the protagonist's "human soul" and "determination" were the cause of their reincarnation and that the merciless events that occurred during the route lead Chara to realize that the "purpose" of their awakening was power. Chara states they are the embodiment of the feeling received whenever STATS increase and proposes erasing the world and moving on to the next. The protagonist is given the choices to "ERASE" the world, or "DO NOT." Both choices lead to the same result.
After the protagonist makes their choice, an attack animation occurs, followed by red "9"s covering the screen. The game is forced into windowed mode and shakes similarly to a monster's death animation as the game closes. The player cannot exit the game before the crash unless they use their OS's Task Manager or Force Quit (on Mac). Upon reopening the game, the screen is black and accompanied by a sound similar to howling wind. After 10 minutes, Chara speaks to the protagonist and is doubtful yet intrigued at the fact that the player wants to go back to the game's world. They remind the player that their actions caused the world's destruction, and after they ask the protagonist if they think they are above consequences, Chara offers to restore the world in exchange for something, later revealed to be the protagonist's SOUL.
Post-Genocide True Pacifist Route
Similarly, if the protagonist decides to have "places to go," the photograph after the credits has the face of everyone crossed out in red, except for Chara's sprite, which replaces Frisk's. The "THE END" text is red, and a slowed down version of Anticipation plays. The Annoying Dog does not appear to sleep under the ending screen. Post-Genocide Genocide Route

General Information
Name: Chara Dreemurr (Shown in official concept art that Toby calls them Chara, along with this naming them "CHARA" in the game will have the game call it "the true name")
Origin: Undertale
Sex: Unknown (Their sex is left up to interpretation)
Age: Unknown
Classification: The First Human, The Fallen Human, LOVE, Angel & Angel of Death (In Geron's story there's an angel noted in the prophecy, where an angel will descend from above and free the monsters, though this can be interpreted as either saving them or a harbinger of destruction waiting to 'free' them from the mortal realm, with pacifist and genocide route reflecting both)
Species: Initially Human, potentially a Demon after reaching the Absolute
Occupation: None
Affiliations: Asriel Dreemurr (When they were human), Frisk (Chara serves as the helpful flavor text for Frisk throughout their journey, even in the genocide route), The Anomaly (Their warped idea of The Anomaly is that they're a "partner" that they will be together with forever)
Enemies: Monster and Humankind (In the genocide route and upon reaching the absolute. As they absorb the LOVE of Frisk, they too are the enemy of both humans and monsters, shown further as they wish for nothing more then just to destroy the world and commit suffering in the next)
Status: Other (Chara upon reaching the absolute gains a new body and becomes the anomaly's LOVE itself)
Alignment: Varies until a route is taken, otherwise True Neutral (Chara's morality depends on the Anomaly's "guidance", with giving them a max LOVE awakening them as a demon. If they do a True Pacifist Route, Chara will remain good at heart and help Frisk in sparing Asriel. However if they reach the absolute Chara will be a demon that wishes for the end of the world. Though before any true route is finished Chara will follow Frisk along the route, no matter where it takes them)
Codex Statistics
Tier: At least 9-C, likely Higher | 2-A | 2-A
Key: Human | Absolute | Fused with The Anomaly's Soul
Dimensionality: 3-D | 3-D in their physical form, Unknown with their body discarded | 3-D in their physical form, Unknown with their body discarded
Attack Potency: At least Peak Human level, likely Higher (Humans are naturally stronger then monsters which should put Chara above the likes of Asgore Dreemurr & Undyne physically, like Frisk should be able to harm those who can harm themself) | Multiverse level (Could destroy the world of Undertale, with Chara affecting more than one timeline as Sans himself states "you'll keep consuming timelines", along with this, there can also be more then one file deleted after Chara destroys the world. The world of UT consists of an uncountable amount of timelines that were all made by Flowey resetting to the point that he knew every set of dialogue, numbers, etcetera. Should be superior to Asriel Dreemurr) | Multiverse level (Fused with The Anomaly's soul)
Durability: At least Peak Human level, possibly Higher (Survived a fall from the mountain top) | Unknown (After destroying the multiverse, their own body is taken with it as they no longer have a body when requesting for The Anomaly to give them their SOUL), Immortality and Incorporeality makes them difficult to kill (As they are able to still exist and do actions even without a body) | Unknown, Immortality and Incorporeality makes them difficult to kill
Striking Strength: At least Peak Human Class, likely Higher | Multiverse Class | At least Multiverse Class
Lifting Strength: Average Human (Should be comparable to Frisk) | Relativistic+ | Relativistic+
Travel Speed: Superhuman (Shouldn't be any slower then Frisk) | Relativistic+ | Relativistic+
Combat Speed: Relativistic+ | Relativistic+ | Relativistic+
Reaction Speed: Relativistic+ (Comparable to Frisk) | Relativistic+ (Their determination surpasses that of even a full determination Frisk) | Relativistic+
Stamina: Average as a human, Limitless as a spirit and when reaching the absolute (Chara is a parasite constantly feeding off of The Anomaly's determination, STATS, etcetera, as such they can never grow tired)
Range: Standard Melee, Extended Melee with weapons, likely Hundreds of Meters with Empty Gun, Multiversal upon reaching the absolute (One slash from them destroyed totality)
Intelligence: Above Average normally (Chara seems to have a wide variety of knowledge concerning the boss monsters and even the regular monsters, giving Frisk information on how to either kill or pacify them), Cosmic upon reaching the absolute (Reached a state where they had an understanding of the world outside of Undertale, where The Anomaly resides, was able to feed off of their determination to become the very embodiment of STATS, LOVE, and Determination)
Powers and Abilities
All previous powers and abilities to a far greater extent, Singular Existence (Once reaching the absolute Chara becomes a multiversal entity that destroys the entire cosmology, meaning there is only one absolute state Chara in existence), Cosmic Intelligence, Timeline Creation and Destruction (Able to recreate a destroyed world), Immortality (Life and Death Immunity & Reliance on Concept; Will live on as long as the concept of LOVE, the stats, and Determination remains. Reliance on Higher Being; Is an avatar of The Anomaly), Regeneration (High-Godly through Possession; After destroying the multiverse, their own body is taken with it as they no longer have a body when requesting for The Anomaly to give them their SOUL, through taking the Anomaly's SOUL they are not only able to recreate the world, but also possess Frisk's body. It is possible also that Chara is able to regenerate without possessing one's SOUL and merely did this in order to gain The Anomaly's SOUL, but this is highly speculative), Absorption (Monsters and humans can absorb the SOUL as long as the person isn’t the same species as them), Power Nullification (Could negate The Anomaly's possession of Frisk at points in the genocide route, such as during the Sans fight where they attack in such a way that it breaks the rules of a FIGHT), Conceptual Absorption (Stole all of The Anomaly's determination), Absolute Access ((Reached the absolute, that no matter where or when, they will always appear), Possession (Posses Frisk at the end of pacifist run), 4th Wall Awareness (Spoke directly to the player), Data Manipulation, Information Manipulation, & Conceptual Manipulation (Messed with the game files, and permanently locked The Anomaly from a true pacifist ending. Destroyed the totality of Undertale), Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation & Essence Manipulation; Stole The Player & Frisk's SOUL), Willpower Manipulation (Can mess with ones determination, made the player lose all their DT. To the point where they couldn’t even close out the game), Empathic Manipulation (As Chara embodies LOVE they can manipulate ones killing intent), Incorporeality & Abstract Existence (Type 1; Is the embodiment of LOVE, the stats, and determination), Personal Nonexistence (Ayin Physiology; Talks to The Anomaly in a non-existent state after the multiverse conceptually ends), Reality Separation (Reality Seperation; Exists outside of Undertale reality as a non-existent being).
Enhanced Resistance to Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation & Essence Manipulation; Lacks a SOUL), Reality Warping, Memory Manipulation, Resistance Negation, Time Manipulation, Information Manipulation, Data Manipulation, & Conceptual Manipulation, & Possible Acausality Negation (Causality Immunity; Unaffected by a true reset, remembering all the prior runs done even after a true reset was done)
All previous powers to a greater extent sans being an avatar of The Anomaly, Freedom of Manifestation (Chara upon gaining the Anomaly's SOUL is no longer their avatar and now is in control of them), gains access to Frisk's abilities which gives them: Weapon Mastery (Can use a huge assortment of weapons), Immortality (Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; When a human dies, its soul remains stable outside the body), Absorption (Monsters and humans can absorb the SOUL as long as the person isn’t the same species as them), Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation & Essence Manipulation; All monsters and humans can perform attacks that can damage the SOUL), Limited Intangibility (It is stated that taking damage causes Frisk to become invulnerable where attacks pass through them), Limited Spatial Manipulation (Frisk was able to visibly move the fight box up), Limited Dimensional Travel (Can forcibly enter a monster's Personal Domain and can leave personal domains).
Limited Resistance to Power Nullification (When Asriel was knocking away all of Frisk other item commands the SAVE prompt still remained), Resistance to Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation & Essence Manipulation; Can survive attacks to their SOUL), Extreme Heats (Unaffected by heat from the MTT-Brand Oven that burned down Undyne's house)

Notable Techniques
Should have the same techniques as Frisk which includes:
FIGHT: Frisk is prompted to pick an enemy to attack. Frisk can attack one enemy each turn.
ACT: Frisk is prompted to select an enemy, and is then given one or more ACT options which are specific to that enemy.
ITEM: Using consumable items regains health. Some consumable items are capable of increasing stats. Using equipment items other than the Bandage or Stick equips them.
MERCY: Sparing means that Frisk does not want to fight. Frisk is encouraged on multiple occasions on their journey to show mercy to the opponents they fight.
Other
Standard Tactics: Chara has shown that their first option upon waking up is destroying the world for good. If one wishes for the world to come back they must make a deal wtih Chara to give them their SOUL, in which they will eventually possess the target.
Weaknesses: None notable.
Note: While Chara is an avatar of The Anomaly, once they've reached the absolute they've managed to reach them and break free from their control completely making them able to affect the plane The Anomaly exist on.
Note 2: The reason Chara's body is completely destroyed from the world destruction is because it goes far beyond merely an Attack Potency feat. The entire world was conceptually destroyed with all files being erased, including Chara's. Thus, this makes Chara being unable to tank this not a contradiction.
Note 3: The human key is not in regards to the genocide route. The character in the genocide route is Frisk, not Chara. The key is meant to represent Chara before their death, as Frisk is mistakened for them by Asriel and isn't shown to have abilities unnatural for humans, Chara should be able to scale to them.
Explanation: Why attacking the SOUL is essence manipulation.

Trivia
- The child being "fallen" can refer both to the child having fallen into the Underground, or to the phrase "to fall from grace" (to become morally corrupt). It is also a word used to describe someone who has died.
- Toby Fox suggests naming the Fallen Child the player's own name, though he then replied to that Tweet with "I mean, if you can't think of anything else lol."[2]
- "Chara" is likely short for "Character," as all internal references of either Frisk (mainchara) or Chara (truechara) use "chara."
- The official Japanese translation of the game translates Chara's name as "キャラ Kyara".[3] This matches the katakana for the English word "character", which is written as "キャラクター Kyarakutā".
- "Chara" is also an alternate spelling of "Cara" and "Kara", both names having their roots in Latin, meaning "darling," "beloved," "dear" or "loved one."
- When attempting to name the fallen child "Chara," the response becomes "The true name." Removing the name from a SAVE file results in the name "CHARA" being given by default. These are the only two instances where the name "Chara" appears in-game.
- Chara is referred to with singular "they/them" pronouns.[4]
- Chara is implied to like chocolate; in the Genocide Route, should the protagonist check the refrigerator in Asgore's Home, the text reads "No chocolate."
- While there is no chocolate in Asgore's home, there is a bar of chocolate in the fridge in Toriel's Home; it is possible Toriel kept it in her fridge in memory of Chara's tastes.
- It is also implied that Chara has an interest in knives, as the text upon inspecting Toriel's kitchen in the Genocide Route reads "Where are the knives." This is further evidenced by the Real Knife.
- The Locket may belong to Chara, as the text "Right where it belongs." displays when the protagonist equips it during a Genocide Route.
- Chara's jumper's color scheme (cream and green) is a color negative of Frisk's (blue and purple).
- Chara is the only character whose dialogue is never accompanied by voice bytes.
- The music as Chara introduces themself to the protagonist has the filename
mus_zzz_c
, with the jump scare music namedmus_zzz_c2
. - If the game is not in windowed mode during the jump scare, the game will automatically go into windowed mode.
- Toriel and Chara both greet new figures using "greetings" (Toriel to the protagonist at the beginning of the game, Chara to the protagonist at the end of the Genocide Route). It is likely Chara assimilated this behavior from Toriel.
- In the Japanese translation, Chara uses "watashi" and "jibun" for themself and refers to a person using "omae". Their speech is also written in "proper" Japanese, that is to say, it employs a standard level of kanji usage (Chinese characters), which puts it in stark contrast with the rest of the game, which hardly ever uses kanji in its text. This gives their speech an air of high formality.[5]
- In the Undertale Greenlight Trailer, Chara’s name appears in some of the battle shots.
- Within the game files, there are look-alikes of Chara with their yellow-and-green shirt and pants, with a different skin tone and lacking a face but having shading under the eyes. In debug mode, it is possible to have these sprites appear as the protagonist's reflection in puddles and mirrors; it has been speculated that this was going to be a feature in post-Genocide Route timelines.
- It is implied in the scrapped Undertale Alarm Clock dialogue that they overfill their glasses of water, and that Asriel adopted that method.[6]
