Flowey the Flower

From The Codex
(Redirected from Flowey)
Undertale/Flowey
Jump to navigationJump to search

Flowey the Flower, he is the main antagonist in Undertale. Despite his friendly appearance he's actually an evil, twisted being that loves to endlessly torture the world. Flowey is what you could also technically call a "sociopath" however, he does express some emotions whether that be or real or just a facade is not truly known.

Flowey the Flower

Clever. Verrrryyy clever. You think you're really smart, don't you? In this world, it's kill or be killed. So you were able to play by your own rules. You spared the life of a single person. Hee hee hee... I bet you feel really great. You didn't kill anybody this time. But what will you do if you meet a relentless killer? You'll die and you'll die and you'll die. Until you tire of trying. What will you do then? Will you kill out of frustration? Or will you give up entirely on this world... ...and let ME inherit the power to control it? I am the prince of this world's future. Don't worry, my little monarch, my plan isn't regicide. This is SO much more interesting.
~ Flowey to the human if he didn't kill anyone thusfar

Clever. Verrrryyy clever. You think you're really smart, don't you? In this world, it's kill or be killed. So you were able to play by your own rules. You spared the life of a single person. Froggit, Whimsun. Vegetoid, Loox. Migosp, Moldsmal. Think about those names. Do you think any of those monsters have families? Do you think any of them have friends? Each one could have been someone else's Toriel. Selfish brat. Somebody is dead because of you.
~ Flowey to the human if they gained any EXP

Clever. Verrrryyy clever. You think you're really smart, don't you? In this world, it's kill or be killed. So you were able to play by your own rules. You spared the life of a single person. Hee hee hee... But don't act so cocky. I know what you did. You murdered her. And then you went back, because you regretted it. Ha ha ha ha... You naive idiot. Do you think you are the only one with that power? The power to reshape the world... Purely by your own determination. The ability to play God! The ability to "SAVE." I thought I was the only one with that power. But... I can't SAVE anymore. Apparently YOUR desires for this world override MINE. Well well. Enjoy that power while you can. I'll be watching.
~ Flowey to the human if they killed Toriel but reset and spared her

I hope you like your choice. After all, it's not as if you can go back and change fate. In this world, it's kill or be killed. That old hag thought she could break the rules. She tried so hard to save you humans. But when it came down to it... Hee hee... SHE COULDN'T EVEN SAVE HERSELF. WHAT AN IDIOT!!
~ Flowey if the human kills Toriel

Hahaha... You're not really human, are you? No. You're empty inside. Just like me. In fact... You're Chara, right? We're still inseperable, after all these years... Listen. I have a plan to become all powerful. Even more powerful than you and your stolen soul. Let's destroy everything in this wretched world. Everyone, everything in these worthless memories... Let's turn 'em all to dust.
~ Flowey during genocide run

In this world, it's kill or be killed.
~ Flowey's adopted worldview

Howdy! It's me, FLOWEY. FLOWEY the FLOWER! I owe you a HUGE thanks. You really did a number on that old fool. Without you, I NEVER could have gotten past him. But now, with YOUR help... He's DEAD. And I'VE got the human SOULS! Boy! I've been empty for so long... It feels great to have a SOUL inside me again. Mmmm, I can feel them wriggling... Awww, you're feeling left out, aren't you? Well, that's just perfect. After all, I only have six souls. I still need one more... Before I become GOD. And then, with my newfound powers... Monsters. Humans. Everyone. I'll show them all the REAL meaning of this world. Oh, and forget about escaping to your old SAVE FILE. It's gone FOREVER. But don't worry. Your old friend FLOWEY... Has worked out a replacement for you! I'll SAVE over your own death. So you can watch me tear you to bloody pieces... Over, and over, and over... ...what? Do you really think you can stop ME? Hee hee hee... You really ARE an idiot.

Asriel Dreemurr

Finally. I was so tired of being a flower. Howdy! Chara, are you there? It's me, your best friend. 𝑨𝑺𝑹𝑰𝑬𝑳 𝑫𝑹𝑬𝑬𝑴𝑼𝑹𝑹
~ Asirel's intro speech right before the battle

You know... I don't care about destroying this world anymore. After I defeat you and gain total control over the timeline... I just want to reset everything. All your progress... Everyone's memories. I'll bring them all back to zero! Then we can do everything ALL over again. And you know what the best part of all this is? You'll DO it. And then you'll lose to me again. And again. And again!!! Because you want a "happy ending." Because you "love your friends." Because you "never give up." Isn't that delicious? Your "determination." The power that let you get this far... It's gonna be your downfall! Now, ENOUGH messing around! It's time to purge this timeline once and for all! ... even after that attack, you're still standing in my way...? Wow... you really ARE something special. But don't get cocky. Up until now, I've only been using a fraction of my REAL power! Let's see what good your DETERMINATION is against THIS!!
~ Quotes during God of Hyperdeath

Urah ha ha... Behold my TRUE power! I can feel it... Every time you die, your grip on this world slips away. Every time you die, your friends forget you a little more. Your life will end here, in a world where no one remembers you... Still you're hanging on...? That's fine. In a few moments, you'll forget everything, too. That attitude will serve you well in your next life! Ura ha ha... Still!? Come on... Show me what good your DETERMINATION is now! Huh? What are you doing...? Wh... what did you do...? What's this feeling...? What's happening to me? No! NO! I don't need ANYONE! STOP IT! Get away from me! Do you hear me!? I'll tear you apart! ... ... Chara... Do you know why I'm doing this...? Why I keep fighting to keep you around...? I'm doing this... Because you're special, Chara. You're the only one that understands me. You're the only one who's any fun to play with anymore. ... No... That's not JUST it. I... I... I'm doing this because I care about you, Chara! I care about you more than anybody else! I'm not ready for this to end. I'm not ready for you to leave. I'm not ready to say goodbye to someone like you again... So, please... STOP doing this... AND JUST LET ME WIN!!! (Before Hyper beam) STOP IT! STOP IT NOW!!! ... Chara... I'm so alone, Chara... I'm so afraid, Chara... Chara, I... I...

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Flowey the Flower’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Before the events of Undertale, Asriel discovered the first human to fall into the Underground. They became siblings and close friends. Before the human died, their final wish was to see the golden flowers from their home village on the Surface. Asriel absorbed their SOUL, and together they carried the human's body across the barrier. After their SOULs merged, they shared control over Asriel's body.

The villagers assumed the fused being had killed the human child. It did not fight back and fled instead. Mortally wounded, it returned to the Underground and died. Asriel's body turned to dust, which scattered across the garden in New Home.

Later, during the determination experiments, Alphys injected determination into one of the golden flowers that had bloomed in that garden. The experiment initially failed, and she returned the flower to Asgore. Not long after being replanted, Asriel awoke as Flowey.

Though Flowey had the will to live, he felt nothing toward his parents or anyone else. Without a SOUL, he could not feel love, joy, or compassion. He reset countless times, experiencing everything the world had to offer, until he eventually met the human protagonist.

Flowey introduces the bullet board mechanic and refers to his attacks as "friendliness pellets." If the protagonist dodges three times, he becomes frustrated and tells them to run into the bullets. If they comply, he explains his worldview. Regardless of their choice, he tries to kill them with an unavoidable ring of bullets, but Toriel intervenes and saves them.

If Flowey was killed on a previous Neutral Route, he does not appear again until New Home. If spared, he reappears at the start of the Ruins and gives advice. If the protagonist resets before completing a Neutral Route, he repeats his tutorial. Resetting again makes him annoyed. If a Genocide Route is reset after leaving the Ruins, Flowey says he will be waiting.

At the Ruins exit, Flowey judges the protagonist's actions. He does not do this if he was killed previously or if the Genocide Route was aborted. After the Ruins, he is mostly absent but can be seen burrowing into the ground in certain rooms. He also leaves a message on an Echo Flower in Waterfall that changes depending on whether Toriel was spared or killed.

If the protagonist kills Asgore, Flowey appears and destroys his SOUL. If Asgore is spared, Flowey kills him himself. In either case, he absorbs the six human SOULs and transforms into Flowey X. The game crashes, and the battle begins upon reopening.

After defeating him, the protagonist can choose to spare or kill Flowey. Sparing him requires multiple mercy actions before he flees. If spared, he gives advice on subsequent Neutral Routes. If killed, he does not appear in the post credits message. Resetting after killing him causes him to reappear at the end of Asgore's battle, berating the protagonist for thinking killing him solved anything. If the Genocide Route is aborted, Flowey becomes upset but says the protagonist will eventually return to their malicious ways.

During the True Pacifist Route, the protagonist finds tapes in the True Lab that reveal Chara and Asriel planned to reach the Surface and collect six human SOULs. On Chara's deathbed, Asriel admitted he no longer liked the plan, leading to his betrayal and the plan's failure.

After restoring the elevator's power, the protagonist receives a phone call from an unfamiliar voice, which sounds similar to Asriel's.

Asriel Dreemurr is the biological son of Toriel and Asgore, and the adoptive brother of the first human to fall into the Underground. He appears as the final boss of the True Pacifist Route. Before his death, Asriel was a gentle, cautious, and caring child who deeply loved his adoptive sibling. He trusted them completely, even when they devised a plan to escape the Underground that involved them consuming buttercups.

After Alphys resurrected Asriel as Flowey without a SOUL, he lost the ability to feel love, leading him to become bored and resentful. However, when he temporarily regained his compassion, he apologized to the human for his actions and came to understand the weight of what he had done as Flowey. Like his father, he often begins his sentences with the word "Howdy!"

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Asriel Dreemurr’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

After Flowey absorbs the six human SOULs and most of the monster SOULs, he transforms into Asriel.

Asriel greets the protagonist as <Name> before he transforms into "ASRIEL DREEMURR, God of Hyperdeath." He informs the protagonist that he does not care about destroying the world anymore, and instead just wants to reset the timeline so that everything unfolds again from the beginning. Asriel believes that the protagonist will continue even if he resets the timeline because they want a "happy" ending.

He then says that his first form is just a fraction of his real power and transforms into his final form. Asriel reasserts that the protagonist will die in a world where nobody remembers them as their physical body fails them.

The protagonist calls to the Lost Souls inside of Asriel's SOUL and reminds them that they are friends with the protagonist. After all Lost Souls regain their memories, the protagonist realizes that someone else needs saving. The protagonist calls their name, and a few sepia tone pictures display. The pictures are of Asriel and his sibling together when the human first fell into the Underground.

Asriel begins crying and reverts to his original form. After finding out that the protagonist's name is "Frisk," Asriel tells them that the monsters really love them and apologizes for his actions. He then breaks the barrier with the power of the SOULs.

He tells Frisk that he has to go; Frisk has the option to hug Asriel and comfort him before he leaves. As he walks away, Asriel tells Frisk to take care of his parents for him.

Asriel can be found at the flowerbed in the Ruins. Frisk only encounters him immediately after his boss fight; if the player watches the True Pacifist Ending Credits and reloads the game, Asriel does not appear. Asriel speaks extensively to Frisk and offers them a different philosophy than his flower counterpart: "Don't kill, and don't be killed." He also mentions to be careful on the surface because "There are a lot of Floweys out there."

Asriel makes a brief appearance in the credits in his God of Hyperdeath form and reminds the player that the they are not over yet. Reverting to his child form, he begins the “Special Thanks” portion of the credits. After the credits sequence, when reopening the game, Asriel returns as Flowey and begs <Name> to "Let Frisk go" and allow everyone to live their lives.

Name Meaning

Flowey's name is a cutsey name based off the word "Flower". It leads to trick one into thinking they're dealing with a friendly NPC.

Appearance

General Description: Flowey is a sentient golden flower. He has a white center, six yellow petals, and a light-green stem.

Facial Features: Flowey can show a variety of expressions. He can mimic the faces and voices of other characters, including Toriel, Asgore, and his old self at the end of the Genocide Route. He also mimics the protagonist's face before the Neutral Route's final battle.

General Description: Asriel has two distinct battle forms: the God of Hyperdeath and a final geometric form.

God of Hyperdeath: This form is named directly in the game. During much of his battle, the "Check" option labels Asriel as "The Absolute GOD of Hyperdeath!" In this state, in contrast to his child form, Asriel has black sclerae with white slit pupils, longer fangs, a pair of horns, and black markings on the sides of his face. He wears a long robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune symbol, akin to Toriel's robe, as well as a large collar with shoulder pads. He also wears a locket similar to the Heart Locket.

Final Form: Asriel's body becomes more geometric, his horns are longer, and his claws and teeth get sharper. He has a pair of wings that continuously change color, and his lower body becomes sharp and heart-shaped. While this form is not directly named, it resembles the Delta Rune, which looks like the "Angel of Death" from the prophecy.

Personality

  • Deceptive: Flowey initially greets the protagonist with "Howdy!" and calls himself "your best friend." He uses pleasantries like "golly." When not trying to fool the protagonist, he stops using pleasantries and insults them.
  • Unable to Feel Compassion or Love: As a flower without a SOUL, Flowey cannot feel compassion or love. He seeks pleasure by indulging his curiosity from his ability to "reshape the world" with determination. He retains memories between SAVEs because he used to be able to SAVE himself.
  • Not Always Amoral: Flowey was not always amoral. He initially used his SAVEs to help others. Over time, as his inability to feel persisted, he reluctantly decided to commit murder to satisfy his growing curiosity.
  • Malevolent and Cruel: Flowey has a malevolent and cruel disposition. He berates the protagonist for not following his "kill or be killed" philosophy but also criticizes them if they killed monsters in the Ruins.
  • Manipulative: Flowey is manipulative, devious, and a cunning planner. He can be subtle when circumstances require it.
  • Acts in Frustration or Cowardice When Out of Control: When a situation emerges that Flowey has no control over, he may act in frustration or sheer cowardice. He killed his former father to appease the protagonist in a vain attempt to save himself during the Genocide Route's conclusion.

  • Docile & Loving: Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. He was compassionate, helping the injured fallen human despite The War of Humans and Monsters. He highly trusted the fallen human and continued their plan to break the Barrier.
  • Regrets "Kill or Be Killed" Philosophy: After temporarily regaining his compassion, Asriel regrets adopting the "kill or be killed" philosophy and apologizes to the Human, understanding they may not forgive him.
  • Attachment: Asriel is deeply attached to those he loves, repeatedly thinking the Human is Chara due to his attachment to them, when in reality Chara is long dead.

Powers and Techniques

All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent.

All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent.

Enhanced Senses (Notices what The Annoying Dog does over the phone[167])

Flowey was injected with determination by Alphys[7], Flowey X's determination overrides even the human's[186], and Asriel Dreemurr is fighting for control of the timeline against a human at peak determination[187]. Giving him, Standard Determination, Filled With Determination, Injected Determination, & Unnatural Determination:

These are the natural applications of determination users that they pertain even when one with greater determination exists.

These are determination users filled with determination, having the greatest amount compared to anyone else[192] being at their strongest mentally and physically during this[193], where their desires for the world override other determination users[191].

These are determination users that have gotten their determination through unnatural means, such as Flowey absorbing the six human SOULs[216], or absorbing the entire Underground to regain his form as Asriel Dreemurr

Equipment

Six Human SOULs

  • Description: With God of Hyper Death/Angel of Death Asriel and Flowey X, human SOULs come in several colors and are stronger than monsters' SOULs. For this reason, human SOULs persist after death. A human's SOUL is not the entirety of their being, but rather their essence, housed in a physical body. This is why humans are stronger than monsters when it comes to physical attacks.
  • Usage: Used to break the barrier.
  • Function: Alphys states that determination is a component of human SOULs, and she was able to extract it from the six fallen humans' SOULs. Due to determination, a human's SOUL is capable of maintaining its form after death.

Notable Techniques

  • Friendliness Pellets: Flowey forms pellets that he pretends are pellets used to share "LOVE". In reality they do a good deal of damage, instantly dropping The Human's HP to 1.
  • SAVE: Ability all determination users have, but only the one with the most determination can use. Allows Flowey to travel through specific points in time, and as Flowey X travel through any point he saves at.

  • Flamethrowers: As Flowey X, throws out literal flame throwers.
  • Insects: Can cause insects to attack.

  • Fire Magic: Asriel calls down a rain of fireballs in a manner reminiscent of his mother Toriel & his father Asgore Dreemurr.
  • Chaos Buster: Asriel summons a weapon that fires a hail of bullets in either three or four rows at a time. He concludes the attack by firing an enormous, multi-colored laser that annihilates anything in its path.
    • Chaos Blaster: An upgraded Chaos Buster. On top of being faster and more difficult to avoid, a spiraling cluster of stars bursts from the gun when the final laser is fired.
  • Chaos Saber: Asriel summons two enormous blades, using them to slice across the battlefield before finishing with a group of deadly sparks.
    • Chaos Slicer: An upgraded Chaos Saber. Far faster and stronger than its previous incarnation.
  • Shocker Breaker: Asriel calls down bolts of transdimensional lightning to scour the area.
    • Shocker Breaker II: A faster, stronger Shocker Breaker which covers more ground and is more difficult to avoid.
  • Star Blazing: Asriel drops a hail of colossal stars onto his foe that explode into even more stars, scattering in all directions. He finishes the attack with the largest star of all, which splits into a dense ring of stars and spirals out in all directions.
    • Galacta Blazing: An upgraded Star Blazing. Asriel drops even more stars than in his previous attack.
  • Hyper Goner: The strongest attack Asriel uses while still only toying with the human. He transforms into an enormous, frightening goat skull before devouring everything around him.

Other

Standard Tactics:

Flowey will attempt to lure the opponent in, pretending to be friendly and then hit them with one of his "friendliness pellets".

Flowey X will barrage the opponent with a bunch of attacks, repeatedly save-loading so that the opponent can suffer forever.

Asriel's first move is a massive absorption of everyone, then he will incorporate several magic attacks, and eventually the hypergoner.

He also implies he was going to control the timeline as he sees fit to play with everyone forever.

Weaknesses

Note

  • In terms of the SOULs saving one, their morality does not matter to them. The Human can have a high LV and still be helped out and saved by them.

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[243] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[244].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[245] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[246].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[20] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[20]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[20].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[40]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[40] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[40]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[247].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[248].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[249].

Misconceptions

Chara's Morality

Chara's morality is up for constanty debate within the Undertale community. There are those that argue they are pure evil while others argue they are complete good.

In actuality, Chara is neither. The reason for why Chara is evil in the genocide route is due to The Anomaly's determination and power influencing them causing them to absorb their LOVE[250]. LOVE represents "Level of Violence" that measures one's capacity to hurt[251]. In regards to this, Chara has absorbed large amount of violence which makes it simple to conclude why they become a demon upon being awakened.

On the other hand, Chara being pure good is not accurate either. Asriel outright states Chara wasn't really the greatest person[252]. Along with this they hated humanity[253].

Chara was simply a flawed human.

Higher LOVE = Higher Strength

This comes from the fact that one's health and stats increase when their LV goes up.

However, EXP and LV do not function how they do in a typical RPG.

EXP is an acronym for execution points[251] which is a way of quantifying the pain one inflicts on others[251]. When one kills someone, they gain EXP and when they gain enough EXP, their LOVE increases[251]. With LOVE standing for "Level of Violence" which measures the capcity of someone to hurt another[251]. The more one kills, the easier it becomes to distance themself[251]. The more they distance themself the less they will hurt and the more easily they can bring themself to hurt others[251].

In essence this means that LV is not a measure of how much stronger one has grown in terms of physical stats, but how more willing one is to hurt others.

On top of this, the reason monsters become more easy to kill and hurt the higher one's LV is due to monsters weakening when they don't want to fight[40] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[40].

Thus higher LV does not actually increase one's strenght in the way it does in typical RPGs.

The Anomaly doesn't exist/The Anomaly is Frisk

This is an argument that queestions the existence of the Anomaly in Undertale, claiming anytime a character is talking about The Anomaly they're either referring to Frisk or that the character doesn't exist at all.

This is incorrect for one major scene that introduces the concept of the true reset, where Flowey outright notes they are the one last threat with the power to erase everything[254]. Flowey even differentiaties Frisk from the "YOU" figure he's referring too[255]. It also cannot be Chara for one important reason, when Chara appears in the genocide route[256], they note that the anomaly's power awakened them from death[257] noting that their "human soul", their "determination" was not theirs but instead the Anomaly's[258]. While some try to argue that Chara was speaking to Frisk during this cutscene, this does not make sense as Chara directly speaks again once the game is re-opened noting how the anomaly wants to go back to the world they've destroyed[259]. This directly is the same as when one re-opens the game after completing a true pacifist playthrough and has Flowey talk directly to them. Thus The Anomaly is a figure that completely exists within Undertale and is a representation of the player. There's even lines that allude to them, such as Flowey calling out the possibility of someone watching the genocide route[260].

In Deltarune the Anomaly has a choice of telling Sans it's great to see him again despite Kris and Sans never meeting before[261]. This would only make sense if The Anomaly had prior knowledge from another game, which would be Undertale.

  • Asgore Dreemurr - Fight
    • Conditions: Asgore was already heavily weakened from his fight with The Human and had his guard down.
    • Location: New Home
    • Note: As noted Asgore was heavily weakened, due to his fight with The Human, otherwise Flowey in his state would not be able to take him one on one.
