Vincent Valentine reporting for duty, ma'am. I've been assigned your protection.
~ Vincent Valentine to Lucrecia Crescent
But I never blamed her. All I wanted was to see her smiling face. But after that day, the light left her heart.
~ Vincent Valentine
If she is happy then... I don't mind.
~ Vincent Valentine

This body is... the punishment that's been given to me. I was unable... to stop Professor Gast and Hojo... And Lucrecia... I was unable to stop them... All that I was able to do was watch... That is my punishment.
~ Vincent Valentine
I was... wrong. The one that should have slept was... you, Hojo!
~ Vincent Valentine
There was no way to cancel the experiment. I couldn't stop her. That was my sin. I let the one I loved, the one I respected most, face the worst.
~ Vincent Valentine

The passage of time has no meaning to me. I don't care how long it's been.
~ Vincent Valentine

~ Vincent Valentine

I used to be nothing but a stone in the river of time. But three years ago, it was you and the others who taught me I had to move ahead.
~ Vincent Valentine to Reeve Tuesti
When a person has someone they care about that much, giving their life is sometimes the least they can do. And maybe that's what makes us human.

Who dares to disturb my slumber?

Background

Vincent Valentine is a main protagonist of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, starring as a playable character in Final Fantasy VII and the lead of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Once a young Turk working for the Shinra Power Electric Company, Vincent's station as the bodyguard for Professor Lucrecia Crescent would start a long journey of suffering for him. After suffering horrible experimentation, Vincent had become the host of Chaos, leading to him becoming a key member in the Jenova War and Deepground Conflict.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Vincent’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Vincent was the son of doctor Grimoire Valentine, born in 1950 likely within Midgar. With his family so closely related to Midgar and the Shinra Power Electric Company, as Grimoire was a Shinra professor, Vincent too found himself working under Shinra. He became a Turk, a group of secretive agents charged with bodyguard jobs, detective work, and covering up Shinra's dark deeds. As a Turk, Vincent excelled, being excellent in combat and always carrying an air of professionalism.

One fateful day, Vincent was sent to Shinra Manor within the small backwater town of Nibelheim. There, Shinra scientists such as Professor Hojo were carrying out their experiments, as they had yet to move their base of operations to the Shinra Tower. Vincent was set to become the personal bodyguard of Professor Lucrecia Crescent who, unbeknownst to him, once served under his father Grimoire and was incidentally responsible for Grimoire's death.

During their time together, Vincent and Lucrecia quickly fell in love with each other, and would go on picnics outside of the town. But Lucrecia was suffering in silence, feeling overwhelming guilt for Grimoire's death, until one day she let everything come to a boil and revealed it all to Vincent. He did not blame her for his father's death, even after hearing everything, but the guilt she felt was too much, and she couldn't bear to be around Grimoire's son anymore. In an act of misguided defiance and trying to run away from her problems, Lucrecia got with Professor Hojo.

Hojo and Lucrecia were to bear a child, which pained Vincent greatly, though he he claimed not to mind so long as Lucrecia was happy. He could not stay silent, however, after learning that the two planned on experimenting on their own child, as a part of the Jenova Project. Vincent confronted the two to try and convince them otherwise, but they pushed him aside. Trying one final time to stop the experiments, Vincent confronted Professor Hojo alone. Enraged by the young Turk's constant belligerence, Hojo took a handgun and fatally shot Vincent.

Vincent slowly bled out and died, which Hojo only saw as a new opportunity for experimentation. Hojo took Vincent's corpse, and preformed horrible experiments on him; infusing him with the DNA of several horrid creatures. None of these experiments seemed to work, however, and Vincent's body continued to rot. As a result, Hojo discarded the Turk's body, though it was regrettably discovered by Lucrecia. She took the body herself, and sought to resurrect him to make up for all the grief she caused.

Lucrecia was placed into a tank of Mako energy and his body experimented on, though Lucrecia didn't simply wish to resurrect him. Her thesis paper, on the old concept of Chaos and Omega, could finally be completed with one final procedure; infusing Vincent with chaos energy. She did so, which, to her horror, transformed him into a disgusting chaotic being——Chaos.

Suddenly, with Vincent becoming Chaos, a small orb of Mako energy known as the Protomateria appeared, which, when placed within Vincent, allowed for him to subdue the Chaos form. Still, Lucrecia was mentally broken; the Jenova cells within her didn't allow her her to die, and she was constantly filled with horrific visions of her son, Sephiroth. Out of shame, she fled Shinra Manor and went to an unknown cave to live for the rest of eternity.

Vincent awoke in Shinra Manor, now resurrected and a being of Chaos and monstrous DNA. He was horrified by his new form and felt immense grief over being able to stop Lucrecia from experimenting on her son, and so he let out a pained scream. Vincent hated himself, and thought his inability to save the one he loved was an unforgivable sin. As such, he went to the basement of Shinra Manor and climbed into a coffin, where he was to be "punished for his sins" with torturous nightmares, until the end of the world.

However, Vincent's exile would not last forever. A few decades of nightmares later, Vincent was awoken by Cloud Strife and his party. They asked Vincent about his past, and asked for him to join them, though Vincent declined. That was, until Cloud mentioned the current state of the world, and how Sephiroth was calling down Meteor. Feeling responsible for Sephiroth's corrupted birth, Vincent joined the party. At last, he was able to face Professor Hojo and Sephiroth, correcting his sins.

After an arduous journey and loads of difficult battles, Professor Hojo and Sephiroth were both seemingly killed. Vincent finally felt redeemed enough to venture out, and find Lucrecia within her cave. The two apologized to each other, with her sealed within a large crystal of Mako energy where she would remain. Vincent became a wandering nomad, often seen appearing back to the side of Cloud's party whenever the world was in danger. That was, until three years following the thwarting of Meteorfall.

Secret SOLDIERs residing underneath Midgar, known as Deepground, escaped their confinement from Mako Reactor 0 and began to attack the entire planet. Their plan was the awakening of Omega Weapon, but in order to do this they needed the Protomateria; residing within Vincent. This put a direct target on his head, and he was being pursued by the dangerous leaders of Deepground, the Tsviets.

Vincent was forced to learn more about the experiments preformed on him by Lucrecia, and thus why he was so connected to the entity of Chaos. Through these revelations, Vincent fused the power of Chaos fully into himself, and defeated each of the Tsviets. At least, he was faced with their leader; Weiss the Immaculate, who actually revealed himself to currently be a mere host body for the once-thought-dead Professor Hojo.

After a hard-fought battle against Weiss and Hojo, Vincent came out victorious, finally truly getting his vengeance on the wicked scientist. Omega Weapon's defeat soon came after, saving the entire planet from possible destruction. With his long battle over, Vincent returned to Lucrecia's Cave, at peace.

Although he listens to the commands of his superiors diligently, Vincent will speak-out when he needs to. When Hojo and Lucrecia announced the experimentation they would perform on their child, Vincent pleaded with them to stop and do what was right. Though, when they both turned him aside, Vincent respected their choice and simply sought to do whatever made Lucrecia happy), Chaotic Good Post-Experimentation (After suffering through horrific experimentation at the hands of both Hojo and Lucrecia, and being unable to stop Lucrecia from infusing her child with Jenova Cells, Vincent has exiled himself into a coffin within the basement of Shinra Manor. He's become a ball of self-loathing, believing himself unworthy of forgiveness, nor can he forgive those who hurt him. However, despite this self-hatred and the seeming unwillingness he has to help others, Vincent's good nature is still within him. He will begrudgingly help those in need and even convinced himself to join Cloud's party, so that he may try to redeem himself for his sins. Powers and Techniques

Spirit Energy Physiology, which grants: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Blessed (Everyone born into the world is blessed with Spirit Energy), Sheer Will (Willpower alone can be enough to fight off Mako poisoning, and the will of Jenova. Those with a strong enough will can retain their sense of self after dying and returning to the Lifestream), Memory Manipulation, Energy Manipulation, Rage Power, & Aura (Limit Breaks are born of memories, are comprised of Spirit Energy, and are unleashed when the user's anger is pushed to the limit. They give off an aura when used), Non-Standard Interaction (Characters can interact with the souls of the Gi Tribe), Regeneration Negation (Biological; Can completely kill pieces of Jenova, preventing them from regenerating. Jenova can regenerate itself fully so long as its cells remain, as Cloud Strife participates in Jenova's Reunion despite only containing her cells. Despite this, pieces of Jenova defeated by the heroes were unable to enact the Reunion), Accelerated Development (When Sephiroth fought the party far earlier than he was supposed to, the main characters could still contend with him, even after Sephiroth absorbed the Whispers and became stronger than he had ever been)

Healing (Potions, Hi-Potions, and X-Potions all restore Cloud’s health. Ethers and Turbo Ethers restore magic power), Resurrection (Phoenix Down fully restores fallen party members when they are defeated), Resistance to Status Effect Inducement (Remedy, Elixir, and Megalixir prevents negative status effects)

It is a powerful handgun able to shot three shots at once, and is ornamented with a chain of a Cerberus dog's head. It is highly customizable, able to be fitted with short, medium, and long barrels for different types of combat, as well as being able to be equipped with Materia. Notable Techniques

  • Galian Beast: Vincent's first Limit Break, transforming him into a gigantic mythical blue beast. This transformation was granted to him due to the numerous experiments preformed on his corpse by Professor Hojo. In this gigantic beastly form, Vincent is capable of powerful uncontrollable melee attacks, seen in his Berserk Dance. He is also capable of conjuring and throwing balls of fire, seen with Beast Flare.
  • Death Gigas: Vincent's second Limit Break, transforming him into a gigantic Frankenstein's Monster-esque creature. This transformation was granted to him due to the numerous experiments preformed on his corpse by Professor Hojo. In this monstrous form, Vincent has grown tremendously, and thus can deal devastating melee damage with Gigadunk. He's also been filled with electrical power that conducts through the metallic bolts in his skin, allowing for a large and extremely deadly blast of electrical discharge, in the form of Livewire.
  • Hellmasker: Vincent's third Limit Break, transforming him into a masked chainsaw-wielding maniac reminiscent of classic horror villains. This transformation was granted to him due to the numerous experiments preformed on his corpse by Professor Hojo. In this horrific state, Vincent can wield his chainsaw to tear up opponents with Splattercombo, or put his foes into a nightmarish trance that inflicts numerous status ailments with Nightmare.
  • Chaos: Vincent's fourth and most powerful Limit Break, transforming him into the soul wrought of terra corrupt, Omega's squire to the lofty heavens, Chaos. This transformation was granted to him due to the numerous experiments preformed on his corpse by Professor Lucrecia Crescent, in her attempt to not only resurrect Vincent but also further her thesis on Chaos and Omega. As the embodiment of chaos itself, Chaos is said to quell impurity and bring about destruction and death. It can utilize energy beams to attack with, such as the beams it unleashes with Chaos Saber. It's ultimate attack, Satam Slam, summons a skull from beneath the earth that consumes the opponent and has the chance to inflict instant death.

Other

Weaknesses: Without the Protomateria helping Vincent control Chaos, his mental state becomes extremely unstable.
