"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Background

Eric Lecarde (エリック・リカード Erikku Rikādo?) is one of the two main protagonists in Castlevania: Bloodlines. He later appears as a supporting character in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and also as a fighter in the 3D game Castlevania Judgment. He is the father of twin daughters, Stella and Loretta, and a close friend of John Morris.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Eric Lecarde’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Early Childhood
Eric was born in Segovia, Spain, into the Lecarde family, a prestigious line with strong ties to the Belmonts. The Lecardes were known for possessing an enchanted weapon, the Alucard Spear, a powerful relic passed down through generations. As the second-born son of five children, Eric was raised with a focus on combat, beginning his training in fencing and martial arts at the age of three. By the time he turned 10, he was the best fighter in his family and the most skilled spear user in all of Spain. At the age of 11, his family arranged an engagement between him and Lucy Seward, marking a step in his future responsibilities.

Castlevania Judgment
At age 15, Eric began to question the role of the Alucard Spear, which his family believed to be a secondary weapon to the more famous Vampire Killer. During a walk, Eric was mysteriously transported to a strange realm, where he encountered a time guardian named Aeon. Aeon challenged Eric to prove his worth by fighting notable warriors from history, including the legendary Alucard, the creator of the spear, Trevor Belmont, who once wielded the Vampire Killer, and Maria Renard, whose magical powers were thought to surpass those of the whip. After defeating all his opponents, Eric’s confidence grew, and he came to believe that the Alucard Spear, combined with his own strength, could stand against even the might of Dracula.

Adulthood
Despite his impressive abilities, Eric eventually turned away from his destiny as a vampire hunter. He found solace in sculpting, a passion that greatly disappointed his father, causing frequent arguments within the family. At the age of 18, Eric left home and his fiancée to pursue his new path as an artist. Five years later, Eric joined the construction of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, seeking a fresh start. During a stormy night, an old man mysteriously visited him and informed him that Elizabeth Bartley, Dracula’s niece, had been revived and was planning to resurrect her uncle. The man handed Eric a key and urged him to return home to fulfill his ancestral role as a vampire hunter. After much thought, Eric chose to return and confront his fate.

Upon his return, Eric was met with tragedy. He discovered that Lucy, who had waited for him all these years, had been killed by Elizabeth, and her soul was trapped in Dracula’s castle. Lucy’s final request was for Eric to save her soul before she passed away. Shortly after, the key he had been given began to shine, leading him to a marble temple in his garden. Inside, he found the Alucard Spear bound in chains, glowing with a pale blue light. As soon as Eric touched the spear, the chains loosened, and a surge of power coursed through him. In that moment, Eric fully embraced his destiny as a vampire hunter and was bound to the spear's power.

Castlevania: Bloodlines
Following Dracula's defeat at the hands of Quincy Morris, the vampire lord's spirit continued to wander, seeking a new vessel. In the midst of World War I, Elizabeth Bartley plotted to use the millions of souls lost in the conflict as sacrifices to bring back Dracula. To complete the ritual, Elizabeth needed to reach Castle Proserpina, located in Whitby, England, where Dracula’s spirit awaited.

In 1917, Eric arrived in the town of Bistritz, Romania, where he met John Morris, the son of Quincy Morris and a distant relative of the Belmonts. Eric joined John and helped him undergo a ceremony that allowed John to wield the Vampire Killer, a legendary weapon of great power. Together, they set out for the ruins of Dracula’s castle in pursuit of Elizabeth. They eventually encountered and fought against one of Drolta Tzuentes’ monsters, before continuing their chase across Europe. In the end, they confronted Elizabeth at Castle Proserpina, where their combined efforts defeated her and Drolta, stopping Dracula’s resurrection and banishing his spirit from Europe.

Before Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Years later, Eric found new love and had twin daughters, Stella and Loretta, born in 1923. Stella inherited his physical strength, while Loretta took after him in magical aptitude. Though neither daughter wielded the Alucard Spear, they were trained in the Lecarde family traditions and learned the rituals necessary to unlock the full power of the Vampire Killer. Despite their training, Eric remained somewhat overprotective of them, knowing the dangers they might face.

After the events of 1917, Eric and John discovered that the Vampire Killer had a devastating effect on those who were not direct descendants of the Belmont family. The whip drained life energy from users who were not Belmonts, and John had suffered from this effect, weakening his health over time. Knowing the consequences, John asked Eric to never reveal the full truth to his son, Jonathan, and to not teach him how to wield the whip’s full power.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
In 1944, Dracula’s castle was resurrected by the grief of those who died during World War II. The vampire Brauner took control of the castle, and Eric went to investigate. He was soon defeated by Brauner, and while searching for him, his twin daughters, Stella and Loretta, disobeyed his instructions and followed him into the castle. The two were turned into vampires by Brauner, and Eric was killed in the process. However, Eric’s strong will allowed him to bind his spirit to the castle, preventing it from being corrupted by its dark power. He waited for new hunters to come, so he could help them defeat Brauner.

When Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin, a spellcaster from the Belnades family, arrived to investigate the castle, they encountered Eric’s spirit, who introduced himself as “Wind” to avoid revealing his identity. Eric assisted the duo by teaching Jonathan new combat techniques, providing Charlotte with spells, and offering valuable information about Brauner. Eventually, when Jonathan and Charlotte found a locket with a photo of Eric, his daughters, and himself, Eric admitted his true identity and explained the reason for his silence regarding his past. He also explained the true circumstances of his own death, revealing how John Morris had kept secrets to protect his son from the Vampire Killer’s draining power.

Eric eventually gave Jonathan the Alucard Spear, and Charlotte performed a purification spell, restoring Stella and Loretta to their human forms. After Brauner and Dracula were defeated, Eric said his final goodbyes to his daughters before departing to the afterlife.

Golem with his ultimate can shoot out a mouth blast that vaporizes everything it touches as far as the eye can see getting these results[19]), Far Higher with Sheer Will (Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeated Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmonts strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[20])

Striking Strength: At least Town Class (Potency), Far Higher with Sheer Will

Lifting Strength: At least Class 10 (Comparable to John Morris, where as a Belmont, the Belmonts are known as the most powerful and renowned vampire hunters within the world of Castlevania[21], during and before Trevor's time[22], the Belmont's were feared because of their immense power[23], which should make them superior to Hector's Battle-Type innocent devils who can move entire tree logs that are blocking roads out of the way[24] where logs can weigh around 15 to 5 tons[25] and Hector's battle-type innocent devils can lift open large iron doors that "no man could force open"[26]), Far Higher with Sheer Will

Reaction Speed: At most Faster Than Light, Far Higher with Sheer Will

Knowledge: Grandmaster level (Can fight and defeat Dracula, where he was a genius tactician as Mathias, who they called "Cronqvist the Wise"[41])

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Acrobatics (Can charge on the ground to utilize a super jump[42]), Penetration Damage (Bladed Penetration) & Weapon Mastery (Spear Mastery; Eric is a skilled user of the Alucard Spear[43], even at the age of 15 he is capable of using the spear for multiple combos and even attacking with it while in the air[44]. Boomerang Mastery; With Crystal Blade Boomerang, sends out a either a singular boomerang or multiple boomerangs with higher power[45]. Axe Mastery; With Axe, throws out either a singular axe or a multitude of axes that charge forth[46]), Sheer Will (Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeated Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmonts strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[47]), Energy Absorption (Eric can get jewels out of objects and enemies, with jewels being a means to charge energy and thus they are essentially hearts, where hearts are a measure of one's stored energy, thus one is absorbing energy when gaining hearts[48]), Non-Standard Interaction (Abstract Interaction; Can harm and interact with Death[49], where Death is death, being the absolute presence, the awe, the religion, and the dark god[50]. He refers to death itself as him[51]. Noting that he is compeltely death and human death is only a part of Chaos[52]. Olrox when seeing Death fight serious notes that he senses the overwhelming existence of death and states that death really exists[53]), Invulnerability (When Eric uses his unique action of the spear high jump, he is invicible and will deal damage to the enemies he strikes[54]), Magic & Principle Manipulation (Eric is a practicioner of magic[55], where magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[56]), Power Modificaiton (John and Eric are able to amplfiy their sub-weapons and modify how they work, for exmaple with the axe theythrow out either a singular axe with below 5 jewels but throw out a multitude of axes that charge forth with above 5 jewels[57], Holy Water being another example of this where with more then 5 jewels the holy water becomes a spiralling fireball while with below 5 jewels it does the standard holy water action[58]), Bestowal (In Spirit form, Eric is able to grant items and techniques he once possessed in life[59][60]), Healing (With Heal, healing magic that restores health[61][62]), Time Stop (With Time Stop, a high-level spell that stops time[63][64]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[65], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[66]), Memory Manipulation (The power of the Lecarde family, can perform a ritual unlocking the true power of the whip and have the power to incarnate the memory of the Belmonts engraved in the whip[67]), Forcefield Manipulation (Before dying, Eric casted a barrier around himself, binding his soul to the castle, making him free from the castle's control[68][69]), Absolute Zero & Ice Manipulation (With Cocytus, call forth the frozen winds of hell to create a fearsome blizzard[70][71]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[72]), Probability Manipulation (With LUCK Boost, boosts LUCK temporarily[73][74]), Holy Manipulation (With Grand Cruz, a secret technique of the Belmont family that releases holy energy[75]).

Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can enter and fight in Dracula's without any adverse effects[76]) The Castle Abilities Include:

Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[77], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the clouds rotate at a fast speed[78]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[79]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[80]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[81]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[82]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[83]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[84], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[85]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[86]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[87]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[88]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[89]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[90]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[91]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[92]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[93]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[94] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[95]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[96]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[97]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[98]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[99])

Note

Trivia

  • Eric's hair color isn't consistent along his many appearances: blond in Castlevania: Bloodlines (greenish-blue in his game sprite), black in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin,[127] and light auburn in Castlevania Judgment.
  • Wind/Eric's English voice actor in Portrait of Ruin, David Vincent, also provided the voice of Richter Belmont in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles.
  • Eric's "Wind" characterization from Portrait of Ruin, shares some similarities with William L. Flemming from Metal Gear Ac!d in both physical appearance and being motivated in their actions regarding at least one daughter being abducted by the main villains, as well as using an alias for part of the game. As Konami was responsible for both games, Eric's design and characterization being derived from Flemming was probably deliberate.
  • Eric's Judgment characterization was allegedly not well received by fans of the franchise due to, not only appearing as a child in that game, but coming across as smug and arrogant as well.
Statue of the "Sleeping Soldier" in Gresit.
  • The "Sleeping Soldier" statue at Gresit town's square that appears in the Castlevania animated series was based on Eric Lecarde's artwork from Castlevania: Bloodlines.
  • The implication of Eric cutting off his fiancée's, Lucy Seward, head off and plunging a stake through her heart after she passed away, to prevent her from resurrecting as a vampire and save her soul, draws aspects to how the Dracula novel character, Lucy Westenra, also went through a very similar situation.
  • The name Eric and its variations have never seen regular use in the Iberian peninsula. Originally a Scandinavian name, it is mostly found in Germanic-, Finnic- or French-speaking countries, and is scarce outside them.
  • In Romanian, his family name, Lecarde, taken apart in reverse reads: E drac el, which translates to "He is devil".

“What have you misunderstood? I am Death. Human death only comprises a part of chaos. They can come back again as zombies or skeletons, but without a soul, dead bodies cannot be revived. And ----- there is no reason to perform that.”
  53. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.
“interesting…… So, death really exists! Thus I’ll use all my power…… to shatter that thing called [death].”

There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children."
  93. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.

  98. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "“Uh……aa……Mi……chelle……”
That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."
