I come from ten thousand years hence.
~ Time Reaper

Background

The Time Reaper in Castlevania Judgment serves as Galamoth’s equivalent to Death, originating from ten thousand years in the future. In the Kid Dracula series, Galamoth has a reaper named Shinigami-san (translated as "Mr. God of Death" in Japan), a title also used for Death. Meaning that Time Reaper and Shinigami-san are the same entity.

In the European Kid Dracula Game Boy manual, Shinigami-san is called "Witchi Wench" due to his long eyelashes, giving him an effeminate look. He first appears as a common enemy in the original Famicom version but later reappears as a boss in the Game Boy version. He seems to be separate from Death, as he serves Galamoth while Death is aligned with Kid Dracula.

In Castlevania Judgment, Galamoth sends the Time Reaper ten thousand years into the past to erase Dracula by eliminating the era in which he resides. The Time Reaper serves as the game's final boss and is a recolored version of Death from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness.

Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[30], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[31]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[32]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[33]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[34]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[35]. With their souls being completely free from time[36]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[37]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[38]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[39], becoming stronger when it's night time[40]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[41] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[42]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[43]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[44]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[45], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[46], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[47]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[48]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[49]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[50]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[51], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[52]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[53]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[54]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[55], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[56], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[57], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[58]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[59]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[60], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[61]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[62]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[63]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[64]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[65]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[66]), Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[67], with their souls being completely free from time[68]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[69], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[70]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[71]), Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[72], with their souls being completely free from time[73], with fate being a truth wound by time[74])

Equipment

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

"Fall! DIE!!"

The Time Reaper swings his scythe up to two times, referencing Death's weapon. This attack can be blocked. In Brutal Mode, during his second health bar, a symbol appears on the ground while he swings, immobilizing the player if they’re caught.

"How CLEVER!!"

The Time Reaper summons several dark orbs that appear at random locations.

"Beg for mercy!"

Summons three homing skulls that can be blocked. When he reaches his final health bar (or second bar in Brutal Mode), he increases this to five skulls. In Brutal Mode, he also summons three skulls while performing his beam attack on the last health bar.

"Ashes to ashes..."

Moving his hands side to side, the Reaper summons flame pillars in groups of three. These can be blocked but are challenging to dodge.

Energy Blast

The Time Reaper gathers energy by holding his hands together, releasing a large energy blast after a few seconds.

"It's futile."

("How CLEVER!" on repeat use) The Reaper releases a blue shockwave that knocks the player across the room, dealing no damage. This surprise attack typically occurs before a phase change.

"Ha ha, HA ha!!"

A symbol appears on the ground, and chain hands immobilize the player shortly after. While this deals no damage, the Reaper often uses it on his second or third (final) health bar, typically just before a scythe swipe. In Brutal Mode, on his second health bar, he may use this symbol mid-swing, a likely reference to Death’s chain hand attack from Portrait of Ruin.

"Nowhere to run!!"

The Time Reaper fires a sweeping, fiery beam across the arena. This unblockable beam requires careful dodging or jumping. On his last health bar (second-to-last in Brutal Mode), he fires two beams, increasing the difficulty.

"STAY OUT OF MY WAY!!!!"

During the final health bar in Brutal Mode, the Time Reaper accelerates his beam attacks and summons three homing skulls mid-attack. His beam becomes a one-hit kill, and he repeats the move continuously. This phase provides only a brief opportunity to counter during his prolonged charge-up.

Other

Standard Tactics: Time Reaper is in a state where he's unreachable without bringing the souls of all those he imprisoned together[105], where the door will only allow a single being to enter[106]. When fighting him, he will utilize various different dark attacks, along with homing skulls and shooting out a massive beam.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • The Time Reaper, aside from obviously being based on the Grim Reaper/Death, may have also been a reference to Father Time, who also wields a scythe.
  • His appearance is even noted by Death to look like him[116].
  • As he is a servant of Galamoth and comes from 10,000 years in the future, it is clear that the Death fought in the Kid Dracula titles is actually him.

Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.
