Frey Holland
Alfre Holland, better known as Frey Holland, is the protagonist of Forspoken. Originally from New York City, she grew up moving between foster homes, having been abandoned as a baby in the Holland Tunnel. She finds herself mysteriously transported to the magical world of Athia. There, she teams up with a sentient, talking bracelet she calls "Cuff", who grants her access to powerful spells. Name Meaning
"Alfre" means "hope"[1], meant to represent how Frey would be a guiding light for all Athia, a hope born of two worlds, that she might bring both worlds together. "Frey" itself is a nickname for "Alfre".
Appearance
General Description: Frey is a young woman with a slim build, brown skin, and brown eyes. She has straight dark brown hair, which she often wears loose, though it is styled differently at various points in the story.
Facial Features: Frey has a youthful face with brown eyes and natural, dark eyebrows that complement her overall features.
Clothing/Outfit: At the beginning of the story, Frey is seen wearing a black puffer jacket and a white beanie. At home, she wears a dark green flannel shirt under a pair of ripped black skinny jeans with a handprint graphic on her right thigh. Her footwear consists of white sneakers with cross straps.
Special Features: Frey's sneakers are notably worn out but have served her well in past situations. Her attire reflects a balance between practicality and a sense of personal style.
Alternate Forms/Disguises: Once transported to Athia, Frey adopts the local attire provided by Auden after escaping from Cipal City. This includes a new outfit along with her hair styled in braids on the sides and a bun at the back. The flannel shirt she wore before is fastened around her waist, and she wears a new set of clothing that fits the Athian environment.
Personality
- Emotionally Guarded: Due to her turbulent childhood, Frey struggles to trust others. She has difficulty opening up and is often defensive, pushing people away, especially when she feels vulnerable or judged. This is seen throughout the game as she continuously distances herself from those who attempt to help her, such as Auden and Cuff.
- Headstrong: Frey is determined and stubborn, often charging forward with her plans even when others warn her against it. This is reflected in her eagerness to leave Athia despite the danger it would cause to the citizens of Cipal, and her initial reluctance to accept responsibility. Her refusal to listen to others is a recurring aspect of her character.
- Sarcastic: Frey often uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism, especially in situations where she feels threatened or uncomfortable. She frequently makes biting remarks to hide her true feelings, particularly when interacting with others in Athia. Her dry humor is an essential part of her personality, even in moments of tension.
- Reluctant Hero: Despite her initial reluctance, Frey eventually begins to embrace her role as a protector of Cipal. As the game progresses, she grows into her responsibilities and starts to understand the importance of her actions, especially after being confronted by the consequences of leaving Athia unchecked.
- Witty: Frey’s sharp wit is evident throughout her journey, often coming out in her banter with Cuff. Her sarcastic remarks and clever one-liners not only serve as a defense mechanism but also help lighten the atmosphere in some of the game's more intense moments.
- Independently Driven: Frey values her independence above all else. After growing up in foster care and facing a difficult life in New York, she refuses to depend on anyone, even when it might be in her best interest to do so. This desire for autonomy sometimes causes friction with those who want to help her, but it also fuels her determination to survive and succeed on her own terms.
Relationships
Cuff
Cuff is the first spirit Frey encounters in Athia, inhabiting a magical wristband that Frey wears. Initially, their relationship is rocky, filled with constant bickering. Over time, however, they form a more cooperative bond as Cuff becomes an invaluable guide to Frey throughout her journey. Though this is later all revealed to be a ploy.
Cuff was actually the demon Susurrus who was using Frey to get his full body back and get revenge on Athia[2].
Though once Frey fights and defeats him in the end, she re-seals him in his arm, having him as an unwitting ally[3].
They commonly bicker despite being enemies, essentially being a term known as "frenemies" with Cuff noting that he will eventually drive her out of her mind soon enough with Frey just saying good luck with that[4].
Johedy
Johedy is one of the first Athians Frey befriends in Cipal. She offers Frey guidance and support in her quest to stop the Tantas and the Break, helping Frey understand more about the land and its struggles as they work together.
Auden
Auden, another Athian Frey befriends, sees great potential in Frey. She encourages Frey to believe in herself, offering both moral support and practical advice as they join forces to battle the ongoing crisis in Athia.
Tantas
At first, Frey doesn't have much concern for the Tantas, but after Tanta Sila accuses her of trespassing on her territory, Frey is forced into direct conflict with the Tantas. She must defeat them all to stop the Break and return home.
It is later found out htat the reason for the Tantas acting the way they did is due to being corrupted by the evil of Susurrus making them lose their minds and go insane, with Frey defeating them essentially "freeing" their spirits.
Tanta Sila
Tanta Sila is the first of the Tantas Frey faces off against. When they first meet, Sila accuses Frey of trespassing in her domain, setting them up as enemies. Frey must defeat her as part of her mission to stop the Tantas' reign over Athia. Frey wishes for vegeance on her also after attacking the village resulted in the death of Olevia Liette, a little girl.
Tanta Prav
Frey initially tried to find a peaceful way to settle things with Prav, though due to Prav suffering from multiple personalities, she tried to attack and kill Frey, forcing Frey to kill her in self-defense.
Tanta Olas
Olas feared fighting Frey due to her already being able to take down the other two Tantas, instead attempting to trap her in an illusionary world, though ultimately Frey fought through all of these but once she reached Olas, she was already dead due to using too much power from the illusions.

Other
Standard Tactics: Frey uses her spells in conjunction with Cuff's protection and one of her many items in combat, using the ones that best suit the situation.
Weaknesses
- Cuff's Magic Weaknesses: Certain powerful attacks can pierce right through Cuff's defenses, dealing a lot of damage if Frey doesn't evade them in time[13]. If Frey recieves a blow heavy enough to reduce her health to zero Cuff will become unable to protect her for a short while, putting her in a very dangerous situation[18]. Frey can still feel pain from the attacks, regardless of the damage being reduced[15].
Trivia
- Alfre graduated at Hudson Pier High School[5].
- Frey hates the cold[7].
- Frey crafted an entire escape plan to get out of New York[7].
