One thing I learned from my father is to never give up, even when the odds are stacked against you.
~ Son Gohan

Background

Son Gohan is the prodigious son of the legendary fighter, Son Goku, and his wife Chi-Chi. Born in a time of peace, Gohan was raised by his mother to be a scholar, and was highly discouraged from training as a martial artist with his father. Eventually, Gohan developed a dream of his own to become a scholar, and began to see the downsides of fighting that Goku did not see.

However, Son Gohan was a hybrid between a Saiyan and an Earthling, which made his potential and rate of growth far exceed those who were pure Saiyan. He would constantly find himself having extreme outbursts of anger, which amplified his strength to the point where he could greatly injure Saiyan warriors, even as a toddler.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Son Gohan's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Saiyan Saga
Despite Goku's protests, Chi-Chi home-schools Gohan to be a scholar until he is four, before Goku takes him to Kame House to introduce him to Master Roshi, Bulma and Krillin. At this time, he is shown as a shy, but very smart boy who also has a tail like Goku once had before it was removed. He is also very sensitive and appears cowardly at some times. While Goku reunites and talks with his old friends, Gohan rides on Turtle's back, and plays Rock-Paper-Scissors with a crab, enjoying himself. After Goku's brother, Raditz, explains his Saiyan origins and attacks Goku with ease, he kidnaps Gohan while the latter rushed to his father's aid, putting Goku at a stalemate, that if he does not kill 100 humans by the next day, Raditz will eliminate his nephew.

Gohan soon gets locked up in Raditz's space pod, because Raditz cannot stand his constant crying. It is during this time that Raditz discovers that Gohan is potentially far stronger than Goku himself. During the battle between Goku, Raditz, and Piccolo, Gohan becomes angry and breaks free of the space pod he is being held captive in when he spots Raditz torturing Goku by repeatedly kicking one of Goku's broken ribs. He delivers a devastating blow to his uncle, giving Goku and Piccolo time to kill the evil Saiyan, though Goku dies in the process as well.

After the battle with Raditz, Piccolo, having seen Gohan's power firsthand, decides to take Gohan out training in the wilderness. He leaves Gohan alone to survive against dinosaurs and other dangers for six months, though during this time he watches Gohan carefully. During the first six nights, while complaining about the sour flavor of the apples Piccolo has given him, Gohan accidentally looks at a full moon and transforms into a Great Ape. Piccolo creates an illusion of destroying the moon, causing Gohan to revert into his normal form before Gohan destroys too much of the land. Piccolo yanks his tail off, then reconstitutes his clothing, giving him a uniform similar to Goku's. The difference: it bears the Demon symbol, to symbolize him being Piccolo's student. For the rest of the year, Piccolo shows no mercy as he teaches Gohan how to fight. Soon, Gohan's bright and cheerful nature makes Piccolo protective over the young boy. As the boy grows on Piccolo, the two of them have a few conversations about Piccolo's past and why he did the things he did, and Gohan tells Piccolo he thinks he is not as bad as everyone has told him.

Eventually, the time comes for the Z Fighters to take on the remaining two Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo senses the Saiyans making their approach and tells Gohan to be ready, when he suddenly senses a third ki from another direction. They think it is another Saiyan but soon find out that it is Krillin who joins them to fight the Saiyans. The Saiyans find them and before the fight starts, they decide to test their Saibamen against the Dragon Team. Soon Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu join them in the fight. While Yamcha and one Saibaman fight, Gohan cannot keep up with their speed through his eyes alone, so Piccolo orders Gohan to concentrate and find them using Ki Sense, which Gohan is eventually able to master quickly. When Nappa begins to fight after Yamcha is killed and the six Saibamen are destroyed, Gohan is able to sometimes control his fear but becomes frightened and hides behind rocks because at times his age catches up with him. This prevents him from being very effective in the battle, except for short intervals, such as a point when he single-handedly kicks Nappa through a boulder. During one part of the battle, Piccolo hatches a plan for Gohan to blast Nappa after Piccolo has kicked him towards Krillin, and Krillin then will kick Nappa towards Gohan for the attack. The first two thirds of the plan work accordingly, but when it is Gohan's turn, Gohan cowers behind more boulders, botching the plan, resulting in Piccolo calling him a worthless coward. When Vegeta gives the group three hours for Goku to arrive, Piccolo loses all hope in Gohan, and after some bickering, he orders Gohan to go home. However, Gohan refuses and even realizes Nappa would not let him go away.

When the fight continues after Goku fails to arrive on time, Gohan regains his confidence and does his best to amend for his previous cowardice. Piccolo hatches another plan for Gohan to attack Nappa after Krillin distracts him and Piccolo grabs his tail. Though Gohan quickly goes on the assault, the plan fails when Nappa is shown to have overcome his tail's weakness. Eventually, when Nappa fires a lethal energy blast at Gohan, Piccolo throws himself in front of Gohan and takes the impact. Gohan watches his mentor slowly die, and while Piccolo confesses his true bond with Gohan, Gohan's emotions once again take over, starting to cry in extreme anger. Once Piccolo slowly passes on, Gohan in turn fires a powerful Masenko at Nappa, which does only minimal damage to his arm. With that last Masenko consuming all the energy he had left, Gohan decides to give up and meet his fate, despite Krillin's protests for him to run. He is almost squashed by Nappa but is saved by the Flying Nimbus when the resurrected Goku finally arrives to the battle. After eating a Senzu Bean with Krillin, he watches Goku overpower Nappa. When Vegeta kills Nappa, Goku tells Gohan to let him battle Vegeta alone, not wanting Gohan to get hurt again.

Later on, after Vegeta turns into a Great Ape using a Power Ball and injures Goku, Gohan returns to the battle. After Yajirobe chops off Vegeta's tail, making him transform back, Gohan was stunned by the true powers of Saiyans. He then fights Vegeta alone while Krillin and a broken Goku prepare to fire a Spirit Bomb, the last resort. Krillin fires the Spirit Bomb, but misses. Gohan bounces it back, hitting Vegeta, but not killing him. Gohan himself transforms into a Great Ape after looking at Vegeta's Power Ball. He defeats Vegeta by landing on him after Vegeta cuts his tail with a Destructo Disc. Afterwards, Goku lets Vegeta go, hoping to one day face him again.

Frieza Saga
After recovering from his injuries in West City hospital, Wukong Hospital, Gohan chose to go to the planet Namek with Krillin and Bulma to gather the Namekian Dragon Balls to bring his friends back to life, because Piccolo's death caused Kami's death too, which caused the Earth's Dragon Balls to turn to stone. Gohan was on a personal mission to wish back Piccolo and went so far as to wear a copy of Piccolo's dōgi to honor him.

After their long trip, with a few sidetracks, they finally make it to Namek, where they find out Vegeta has also come seeking the Dragon Balls, along with his former far more powerful boss, Frieza. While scouting the planet with Krillin, Gohan spots Frieza and his minions, Zarbon and Dodoria, tormenting Namekian villagers. When Gohan sees Dodoria, one of Frieza's top henchmen, attack a little Namekian child named Dende, he goes out and attacks him. Afterwards, Dodoria chases Gohan, Krillin and Dende, but they eventually lose him and Vegeta kills Dodoria.

Gohan and Krillin bring the young Namekian Dende to their hiding spot. Bulma awaits them in a Capsule House and is surprised to see Dende. After a meal, Dende explains to them that there is a Dragon Ball kept safe with Grand Elder Guru, the ruler of the Namekians. After Dende takes Krillin to see Guru, Bulma notices that the Dragon Radar is picking up a solitary Dragon Ball in an isolated place (where Vegeta hid it earlier underwater), and has Gohan go retrieve it. Gohan steals a Dragon Ball that Vegeta has hid in a lake for himself, and even tricks Vegeta who runs into him on his way back from retrieving the ball. After Gohan returns to the hideout, he meets up again with Krillin who takes him to see Guru where he unlocks his hidden potential. Vegeta eventually figures out that Gohan stole his Dragon Ball and becomes enraged, but the arrival of the Ginyu Force makes Vegeta have to form an alliance with Gohan and Krillin in order to get all the Dragon Balls and put up a fight against Frieza's feared Special Forces. Unfortunately, when they gather all of the Dragon Balls, they are ambushed by the Ginyu Force. The weakest of them, Guldo, is to take on Krillin and Gohan, but fails as Vegeta steps in and decapitates him with his hand.

Then, when Vegeta is fighting a losing battle against Recoome, Krillin and Gohan step in and fight, but it is still not enough. Gohan is on the brink of death until Goku shows up with Senzu Beans. Goku takes on the rest of them but has his body switched by Captain Ginyu. With Goku completely weak in Captain Ginyu's body, Gohan has to try to fight Captain Ginyu in his father's body (although he is initially reluctant to do so, despite knowing it is not his dad, as he still feels he is injuring his dad by doing so). Captain Ginyu is unable to fully figure out Goku's powers and after a short fight with Gohan, Krillin, and Goku in Ginyu's body, Vegeta kills Jeice and ultimately defeats Ginyu. After Captain Ginyu ends up in a frog's body, Gohan and the others gather the Namekian Dragon Balls and wish for Piccolo to be brought back to life on Namek.

Shortly after, Frieza ambushes them, making them stall for Piccolo to come. In the Z Fighters' battle against Frieza's second form, Krillin is injured by the tyrant and is sent into the depths of the water below. Gohan rushes to save his friend from drowning, but Frieza stops him. Getting angry, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks followed by the Gekiretsu Madan (a massive wave of energy blasts), following up with a Masendan to finish the job, that would bring the tyrant to his knees. When Piccolo (now greatly powered up after fusing with the Namekian hero Nail) arrives on the battlefield, he fights an even battle against Frieza while Gohan and the others watch in amazement.

However, Frieza transforms into his third transformation and gains the upper hand against Piccolo. Seeing this, Gohan becomes enraged and attacks Frieza with the Full Power Masenko, hindering Frieza for a few minutes. Eventually, Frieza manages to deflect the attack back at Gohan, who is saved by Piccolo when he destroys the attack with a Ki Blast. Frieza then transforms into his final form, and as his first act, kills Dende, who had been healing the Z Fighters. Frieza then tries to kill Gohan with a Death Beam, but Vegeta saves the young Saiyan by kicking him out of the way of the blast. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo watch in horror as Vegeta gets brutally beaten by Frieza until Goku arrives. Gohan was horrified to hear Vegeta break down in tears while revealing how he and the Saiyan race were enslaved by Frieza, who proceeded to eradicate them. In the end, Vegeta meets his end at the hands of Frieza, who kills him with a Death Beam.

Gohan and the others are left on the sidelines while Goku fights an even battle against Frieza. However, things turn bad when Frieza powers up to 50% of his power and gains the upper hand against Goku, who desperately attempts to use the Spirit Bomb. In order to buy Goku some time, Gohan and Krillin lend their energy to Piccolo so he can stall Frieza enough for Goku to complete his Large Spirit Bomb. When Frieza prepares to kill Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin summon up the last of their energy and distract the tyrant with a surprise attack, saving the Namekian's life. Goku then fires his completed Spirit Bomb. It proves successful and Frieza is plummeted into the depths of the Spirit Bomb, heavily injuring him.

Believing the tyrant to be dead, the heroes relax and prepare to go back home to Earth, until Frieza appears on top of a boulder and reveals to be alive. Frieza mortally wounds Piccolo (in the anime, Frieza attempted to fire a Death Beam at Goku, but Piccolo pushed him out of the way and got hit by the laser instead, whereas in manga, Frieza intended to fire the attack at Piccolo), overwhelming Gohan with horror and grief at the grievous injuries of his mentor and friend. Next, Frieza kills Krillin, by telekinetically blowing him up into pieces, which enrages Goku and allows him to transform into a Super Saiyan. Gohan was in awe at the transformer before Goku assertively orders Gohan to take Piccolo and retrieve Bulma and take them to the ship that he traveled in and use it to head back to Earth. Reluctantly obeying his father's wishes, Gohan leaves the battlefield with the unconscious Piccolo and manages to retrieve Bulma.

Later, when he senses that his father is supposedly dead, Gohan returns to the fight to stall Frieza before Namek explodes. However, despite his best efforts, he is unable to stall Frieza as the tyrant taunts him and he is not fighting, in addition to Frieza deducing the real reason Gohan is attempting to fight him. However, Gohan then senses that his father is still alive and powers up. Next, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks, while expressing anger that Frieza harmed Goku, knocking him to the ground and finally blasting him with a Super Masenko. Unfortunately, Frieza appears unaffected by the attack and powers up to full power again, saying that Gohan is a true Saiyan and that is why Frieza must kill him. However, before Frieza can kill Gohan, Goku rises up from the ocean below and reminds Gohan of his order to get off Namek. Gohan flies away from the fight and encourages his father to win. As Gohan is flying back to the spaceship, he and the others are later transported to Earth by Porunga while Goku is left finishing the battle with Frieza on the dying planet Namek.

After Goku wins the battle, but is seemingly caught in planet Namek's explosion, Gohan and the others mourn the Saiyan warrior's apparent death. Months later, they are allowed to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to wish Goku back to life. However, they are shocked after Porunga refuses the wish that Goku be brought back to life, but everyone rejoices once the Dragon explains that Goku did not die from Namek's explosion. During this time of peace, everyone awaits the arrival of Goku, and Gohan goes back to his studies while Piccolo watches over him and his mother.

Frieza-Androids Interlude
A year after Goku defeated Frieza on Namek, Gohan and Chi-Chi still wait for Goku's safe return to Earth. However, things turn bad when the Z Fighters sense Frieza heading towards Earth, along with another powerful being: his father, King Cold. Gohan and the Z Fighters regroup where Frieza and King Cold's spaceship is landing, at Northern Wastelands, but without Goku's help, the Earth appears to be doomed. However, when Frieza and King Cold land on Earth, they are confronted by a mysterious youth, who transforms into a Super Saiyan and easily destroys Frieza and King Cold along with their henchmen.

After the fight, he tells the others to follow him to when and where Goku will be arriving. After waiting two hours (three in the manga), Goku arrives on Earth and he and the youth have a private talk. With the conversation over, the youth departs to his future, but promises to meet them again when the Androids arrive. During the next three years, Gohan trains hard with Goku and Piccolo to prepare for the Android threat.

Androids Saga
Three years later, the Z Fighters locate the Androids on an island nine miles southwest of South City. However, not wanting to fight in the city in fear of causing more damage after Gero had already destroyed half of the city, they fly to a wasteland so they can fight. Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan form and dominates Android 19, until the Saiyan contracts the heart virus Future Trunks warned him about three years prior, allowing Android 19 to gain the upper hand and steals some of Goku's energy. Goku, however, is saved by the arrival of Vegeta, who transforms into a Super Saiyan himself and easily destroys Android 19 while the Z Fighters watch in amazement.

With Android 19 destroyed, Android 20 becomes scared and retreats, with the Z Fighters in pursuit. During the search, Piccolo is suddenly ambushed by Android 20, who attempts to steal the Namekian's energy and use it against Vegeta. Luckily, Piccolo telepathically contacts Gohan and tells him to come help him. Gohan soon arrives and knocks Dr. Gero down to the ground, saving Piccolo's life as the Z Fighters gather around. Piccolo then fights Android 20 alone and dominates the android with the strength he achieved from the last three years of intense training, cutting off one of Gero's hands. Future Trunks then comes back from the future and arrives on the battlefield with the Z Fighters, only to discover that these Androids are not the ones in his future timeline. However, Android 20 manages to escape, and the Z Fighters search for him while Gohan flies Bulma, Trunks, and Yajirobe back home to Capsule Corporation. Dr. Gero makes it back to his lab and activates two of his more powerful creations, Android 17 and Android 18. However, the Androids rebel and kill Dr. Gero and proceeded to activate another android, Android 16, whose sole purpose is to kill Goku. The Z Fighters battle the new Androids, only to be badly beaten as the Androids fly away to find and kill Goku.

Cell Saga
When the Z Fighters are in an airplane with a weakened Goku, flying away from the Androids, Gohan and Future Trunks leave and meet with Bulma to investigate an old-time machine that was used to travel to the past. The time machine is covered in moss and has a large hole at the top. In there, they find a large eggshell split in half but cannot get any conclusions from it. Then, Gohan finds something unusual in the distance: the skin of a huge bug (later known as the android, Cell). Bulma takes the shell with her to do some more investigating.

After Goku is cured from the heart virus, he takes Gohan, Future Trunks, and Vegeta up at The Lookout, where they are shown by Mr. Popo a special room up at Kami's Lookout, known as the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, in preparation for a new threat: Cell. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Future Trunks and Vegeta both enter the room first for the whole day while Goku and Gohan wait and sense that Piccolo (now fused with Kami and returned to the original nameless Namekian) is fighting against the Androids. Gohan tries to go down to Earth and help Piccolo, but Goku does not let him go and explains he is not strong enough and will only get in Piccolo's way. Goku tells Gohan as soon as they get their training done, they will go down to Earth and help Piccolo.

Later, when Piccolo was nearly killed by a powered-up Cell, who arrived on the battlefield between Piccolo and Android 17, Goku and Gohan sense Piccolo's energy disappear. Believing his mentor to be dead, an enraged Gohan tries to go down to Earth, but is held and calmed down by Goku. Still angered, Gohan flies up into the air and tries to escape from the Lookout but is punched down to the ground by Goku. As Mr. Popo rushes to help him, he explains to Gohan that Goku is hurting inside too and is even more angry than Gohan about Piccolo's near death. Gohan and Goku apologize to each other for their actions, and Goku promises that he will not let Piccolo's sacrifice be in vain.

After Cell absorbs Android 17 and achieved his Semi-Perfect form, he is about to set his sights on Android 18 when Tien Shinhan arrives and attacks Cell with his Neo Tri-Beam, allowing Android 18 and Android 16 (who was injured by Semi-Perfect Cell) to escape. Goku and Gohan sense Tien's energy decreasing and he finally collapses from exhaustion. Just before Semi-Perfect Cell can kill Tien, Goku uses Instant Transmission to appear on the battlefield. He grabs the barely alive Tien and Piccolo and teleports back to the Lookout, where they are fully healed with a Senzu Bean. Piccolo explains that despite their best efforts against Semi-Perfect Cell, they proved useless.

At that moment, Mr. Popo interrupts and brings the group to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Future Trunks and Vegeta emerge stronger than ever. They are given new Saiyan armor by Bulma (who by this time already arrived) and fly down to the Earth to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. While Vegeta and Future Trunks fight Semi-Perfect Cell, Goku and Gohan enter and train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber while wearing some new Saiyan armor made by Bulma. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan struggles to transform into a Super Saiyan. Goku informs him that to become a Super Saiyan, it must be triggered by anger and rage. Gohan realizes the only way to become a Super Saiyan is for his father to fight him at full power. Hesitantly, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and fires a powerful Kamehameha at Gohan. Gohan blocks the attack and thinks about all the other times he was not able to help his friends whenever they were in danger while his friends helped him out if he was in danger.

Thinking about this, Gohan becomes overwhelmed with rage, allowing him to transform into a Super Saiyan and fire the Kamehameha back at Goku, who dodges the attack and tells his son to focus his energy, making him return to his base form. Goku tells Gohan they can take a break and even gives his son a haircut. Later, Gohan again transforms into his Super Saiyan form and trains while Goku sits down and watches his son's training in his Super Saiyan form improve. He then offers to take a lunch break and has Gohan use one of his ki blasts to roast the meat. Gohan does so, but he unintentionally ends up burning the meat, as well as setting Goku's hair on fire. Goku then lectures him about the importance of controlling his power as Gohan attempts to warn an oblivious Goku about his hair being on fire, with Goku realizing mid-lecture and begs Gohan to help put it out. Gohan gets tired and transforms back into his base form when Goku demonstrates the second and third grade forms (which are the forms that Vegeta and Future Trunks are using against Cell, who by this time had achieved his perfect form by absorbing Android 18).

Seeing this incredible strength and power, Gohan is sure Goku can beat Cell, but Goku says he can't. He explains that because his muscles are now bulky, they slow down his speed, which is obviously important in the fight with Cell. Goku tells Gohan that transforming into a Super Saiyan takes a great deal of energy, but they need all the Super Saiyan energy they can get. Goku comes up with a plan to transform into a Super Saiyan Full Power, so he tells Gohan to try and stay transformed as a Super Saiyan for the whole day when it starts to feel normal.

At some point during their training, Goku prepared to call it a day, but then Gohan then manages to surprise Goku by transforming into an unprecedented Super Saiyan form before collapsing from exhaustion. Although Gohan does not remember it due to the strain of this initial transformation, it ended up being the catalyst that caused Goku to realize that, should Cell achieve his perfect form, Gohan is the only one of the Z-Fighters, including Goku himself, who would stand any chance at defeating Cell in even that state.

With their training finally completed, Gohan and Goku emerge earlier than expected from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber as Super Saiyan Full Powers. As Goku and Gohan are eating food made by Mr. Popo (because they do not really know how to cook when they were in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), Future Trunks, after being defeated by Perfect Cell along with his father Vegeta, tells them that Perfect Cell is hosting a tournament for the Earth's strongest warriors called the Cell Games, to which Goku thinks of it as an interesting challenge. While Goku wears his trademark orange and blue clothes for the tournament, Gohan asks Piccolo for a copy of his uniform, since he was his first mentor. Piccolo conjures up a uniform similar to his for Gohan, who happily appreciates the new outfit.

Goku pays Perfect Cell a visit using Instant Transmission, and after returning, he claims he is no match for the android. Piccolo suggests they can still go in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for extra training. However, Goku declines and says that he and Gohan can train outside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, greatly surprising everyone. Goku and Gohan leave the Lookout, (after Goku and Gohan show Korin and Yajirobe their new power) and arrive at the Kame House to pick up Chi-Chi so they can go home. Gohan asks his father if they have a chance of beating Cell if they spend the next nine days resting and training outside. Goku laughs and says they do not have to worry about it now, since they have nine days to relax. Gohan and Goku go inside and meet everyone else (at one point, Oolong and Puar even say that Gohan has, "buffed up"). However, when Chi-Chi sees Goku and Gohan, she freaks out and exclaims that Gohan has become a hair-dyeing punk.

In a filler episode, Gohan flies to a village called Chazke Village to run a shopping errand for his mother. He meets Lime and Mr. Lao there, and later encounters one of his father's deadliest enemies in his childhood: Mercenary Tao, rebuilt as a cyborg. Taken over by panic and shock at discovering Gohan is Goku's son, Mercenary Tao flies away on a tree. Goku arrives and he and Gohan are given the groceries by Mr. Lao, who encourages them that they can defeat Cell. Gohan and Goku say their goodbyes to Mr. Lao and Lime and fly back home.

In another filler episode, Gohan has his 11th birthday, and all of his other memories are revealed. One of his memories include Goku, Chi-Chi, and the Ox-King discussing a name for their newborn son. However, when they mention Grandpa Gohan, Goku's deceased adoptive grandfather, they discover the baby laughs at the name, "Gohan." Seeing as the baby likes the name, "Gohan", Goku, Chi-Chi, and Ox-King name the baby, "Gohan." In another flashback Goku, Chi-Chi, and Gohan are walking in the woods when they look up in a tree at a bird family. However, Goku accidentally lets go of Gohan's stroller, causing Gohan to zoom violently down the hill while Goku and Chi-Chi run for their lives after their crying son. The stroller jumps over a ravine and heads for a tree where it crashes and breaks. The crying Gohan is about to smash into the tree, but he stops crying and uses his hidden power to smash through the tree without injury. Goku catches Gohan on the other side of the tree, and he laughs, ending the flashback.

Gohan, Goku, and Krillin return home, where they, along with Chi-Chi and Ox-King, celebrate Gohan's 11th birthday. Before he blows out the candles, Gohan makes a wish in his mind. He wishes he would have enough strength to defeat Cell so his family would live in peace. However, when Gohan blows out the candles, he accidentally ends up blowing the cake everywhere on everybody's face. Chi-Chi says a boy would get severely punished for trashing his birthday cake. However, Chi-Chi's mood changes to happy and she says he cannot help it because he is Goku's son, to which everyone joyfully laughs.

Finally, ten days have passed, and the Z Fighters arrive at the Cell Games for the battle against Perfect Cell. Goku is the first Z Fighter to battle against Perfect Cell and matches the monster blow for blow. To everyone's surprise, Goku forfeits the battle against Perfect Cell after using the Instant Kamehameha which left him, and Cell drained. Goku then chooses Gohan to fight Perfect Cell in his place. Gohan states Goku and Cell's battle was not hard to keep up with, leading to the conclusion that Gohan was possibly stronger than Goku, who was fighting at full power. Gohan powers up to the point where his power exceeds even Goku's and reluctantly fights Perfect Cell. As the battle occurs, Gohan does not have the same fighting spirit as his father nor does he have the desire to kill, thus allowing Perfect Cell to gain the upper hand. Gohan tells Cell that once he becomes enraged, his hidden power is unleashed, referring to when he attacked Raditz, when he was in training with Piccolo, and when he was fighting Frieza. Gohan did not wish to see this power unleashed, much to Perfect Cell's chagrin.

Believing he could see this hidden power, Perfect Cell began smacking Gohan around to get him angry. Gohan finally gets a little angry and kicks Perfect Cell in the face, giving him a bloody lip and fueling his desire to see Gohan's hidden power. When things start to get dangerous, Android 16 sneaks up behind Perfect Cell and gives him a bear hug, attempting to self-destruct and take the monster with him. However, Krillin reveals to Android 16 that Bulma and her father removed the self-destruct bomb, allowing Perfect Cell to break free and blast Android 16 to bits, much to the horror of the Z Fighters. However, the android's head is left still intact and rolls over to Mr. Satan and his gang, who were hiding and watching the fight.

Perfect Cell then creates seven Cell Juniors and has them attack the Z Fighters. Gohan watches in horror and becomes angry as his friends are mercilessly beaten by the Cell Jrs. Meanwhile, the head of Android 16 convinces Mr. Satan to throw his head to where Gohan and Perfect Cell are so that he may help Gohan. Now in Gohan's sight, Android 16 tells Gohan to not be afraid of releasing his anger and that it was okay to fight if he wants to protect the people and world he loved. Finally, 16 said to Gohan to drop his restraints and let it go because he has enough power and strength to defeat Perfect Cell. With Android 16's final words, Perfect Cell crushes Android 16's head, ending the peaceful android's life. Touched by Android 16's final words and enraged by the peaceful android's death, Gohan's rage reaches its limits and transforms him into a new level, Super Saiyan 2.

Now in his new anger-fueled state, Gohan says to Perfect Cell stating that he will never forget what he has done. He approaches the android and quickly snatches the Senzu Beans that Perfect Cell stole from Krillin. Gohan disappears as Cell tries to grab them back and appears in front of a Cell Jr., showing new amounts of speed. The Cell Jr. attempts to strike Gohan, only to be easily killed by the enraged young Saiyan. Gohan moves so fast that it appears that he has teleported to where Krillin is held captive by two of the Cell Jrs., something that Future Trunks realizes about Gohan increasing his strength and power without losing speed. Gohan rescues Krillin and kills another of the Cell Jrs. Seeing this new incredible power that Goku spoke of earlier, Perfect Cell orders all of the Cell Jrs. to take on Gohan all at once; however, Gohan easily kills all of Cell Jrs. without mercy, much to the amazement and shock of everyone, including Perfect Cell. After Gohan gives the stolen Senzu Beans to Future Trunks to heal the Z Fighters, he proceeds to challenge Perfect Cell.

As the Z Fighters are healed by the Senzu Beans and get to a safe distance, Gohan battles Perfect Cell and gains the upper hand against the android. Perfect Cell unleashes his maximum power and punches Gohan hard in the face. However, Gohan is barely fazed by Perfect Cell's blow and counterattacks with two powerful punches to his stomach and face, severely injuring the Android. Perfect Cell fires attacks used by some of the Z Fighters, including the Destructo Disc, Special Beam Cannon, and Scatter Shot at Gohan, who easily brushes through the attacks. Gohan tells Perfect Cell that he should not have pushed him and because of that, he is going to destroy him.

Perfect Cell flies up high into the air and fires a massive Kamehameha down at Gohan in an attempt to destroy the entire Earth. However, just as the huge energy beam is about to hit the Earth, Gohan counterattacks with a bigger and more powerful Kamehameha, overpowering Perfect Cell's Kamehameha and destroying the android's legs, left arm, and the two straight sections on top of his head. Goku yells for Gohan to finish off Cell before he regenerates, but Gohan, still enraged at Perfect Cell's actions, refuses and wants Cell to suffer before he kills him. Surprisingly, Gohan even cracks out a psychotic grin at Goku while Cell is regenerating while Goku continues telling him to finish Cell. As Goku predicted, the enraged Cell regenerates and transforms into his Power Weighted form but even with his enormous power, he is unable to hit Gohan, making the same mistake Future Trunks made ten days ago. After Gohan dodges Cell's punches, he delivered two powerful kicks to Perfect Cell's face and stomach, making him regurgitate Android 18 and transform back into his Semi-Perfect form.

In a fit of anger and desperation, Semi-Perfect Cell began a Self Destruction technique, planning to blow himself up along with the Earth. Gohan attempts to attack the self-destructing Semi-Perfect Cell, but the android replies that if he is hit, he will immediately explode. Hearing this, Gohan realizes that there is no way that he can save the Earth and blames himself for not finishing Cell off sooner. However, at the last second, Goku uses instant-transmission to transport in front of Semi-Perfect Cell. Goku tells Gohan how proud he is of his son for putting up a good fight and to look after Chi-Chi. After a heart-felt goodbye to his son, Goku transports Cell away from Earth to King Kai's Planet where Semi-Perfect Cell finally explodes, destroying the planet and killing Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory in the process. Back on Earth, Gohan and the other Z Fighters mourn Goku's noble sacrifice. Realizing how cocky and arrogant he was, Gohan cries and blames himself for his father's death while Krillin tries to comfort him.

However, unknown to the Z Fighters, Cell survives the explosion, regenerating from a lone cell in his core. Doing this effectively raised his power higher due to the Saiyan genes he absorbed from Goku and Vegeta, and he also learned Goku's Instant Transmission technique, which he used to head back to Earth. As his first act of return, Super Perfect Cell kills Future Trunks with one blast in front of the shocked Z Fighters. Gohan was in fact pleased to see Super Perfect Cell had returned, hoping to defeat the android so he could avenge his father. Enraged by his son's death, Vegeta in a fit of fury and rage, transformed into to a Super Saiyan and attacked Super Perfect Cell with a powerful barrage of energy blasts. However, as the dust clears, Super Perfect Cell emerges from the blast, unharmed, and smacks Vegeta aside to the ground and fires a powerful blast at the Saiyan prince. Gohan jumps in front of the unconscious Vegeta and takes the full force of Super Perfect Cell's attack, costing him the use of his left arm and most of his power drained.

Wanting to end the conflict, Super Perfect Cell prepares a massive Kamehameha to destroy Gohan, who loses all hope after having his left arm broken and seeing how much more powerful Super Perfect Cell is now. However, at that moment, Goku telepathically contacted Gohan with the help of King Kai and encouraged Gohan to believe in his power. When Gohan tells Goku it was all his fault that this happened, Goku reminds him that not only do things like this happen, but if anyone is to blame for it, it is Super Perfect Cell. With newfound hope and confidence, Gohan prepares a one-handed Kamehameha with the assistance from Goku's spirit. With their attacks finally charged and ready, Gohan and Super Perfect Cell fire their Kamehameha attacks at each other, resulting in a huge Beam Struggle that knocks everyone away.

During the Kamehameha duel between Gohan and Super Perfect Cell, Super Perfect Cell has the upper hand against Gohan. However, Gohan, still aided by his father in Other World, is able to charge more of his power into his Kamehameha, seemingly bringing the energy duel to a standstill. The Z Fighters, except for Vegeta, also help out Gohan by blasting Super Perfect Cell, who retaliates by knocking all of them away with his energy, rendering them unable to help Gohan. However, just as Super Perfect Cell is about to destroy Gohan, Vegeta, after regaining his confidence, aims at Super Perfect Cell's head with a Galick Blazer, distracting the android. Seeing this opportunity, Gohan (encouraged by Goku) unleashes all the rest of his power into his Kamehameha, completely destroying every cell in Super Perfect Cell's body, dispatching the android once and for all. Having successfully won, Gohan reverts to his normal state and collapses to the ground, breathing heavily and smiling as Goku in Other World expresses how proud he is of his son for finally defeating Super Perfect Cell and saving the world.

Following Super Perfect Cell's defeat, the Z Fighters and Gohan return to Dende's Lookout, where he is healed by Dende. With the newly recreated Dragon Balls, they summon Shenron and wish for all of Cell's victims to be revived. However, Goku does not come back and telepathically contacts the Z Fighters on the Lookout. Goku tells them not to revive him and explains that he seemed to attract evil villains that were after him, so the Earth would be safer if he was not there. He also said that Gohan had greatly surpassed him and if there were any other threats, Gohan would be there to defend the Earth. With the conversation over, Gohan and the Z Fighters say their goodbyes to Goku and to each other before leaving Kami's Lookout and going their separate ways, leaving the Earth safe once more.

Great Saiyaman Saga
Seven years after the events of the Cell Games, Gohan lives at home with his mother and his seven-year-old brother named Goten, born just after the Cell Games. His training has taken a backseat to his studies and his strength has decreased overtime, although he can still compete with Goku and Vegeta, who have trained hard in those years. Chi-Chi decides Gohan needs to attend high school in order to pursue higher education, so she sends him to Orange Star High School in Satan City. On his first day in the city, he turns Super Saiyan (in order to conceal his identity) to stop a robbery, and by the time he arrives at Orange Star High tales of the newest hero, "Gold Fighter", have already spread (which name was actually given to him after two previous incidents while going to the school to take entrance exams). In class, he meets another crime-fighter and the most popular girl in school, Videl. She is the daughter of Mr. Satan, who got rich and famous for stealing Gohan's credit over the defeat of Cell. While at school, Gohan also had to be careful not to reveal his true power.

However, Gohan makes the mistake of forgetting to take off his student badge as the "Gold Fighter" and unintentionally performs superhuman feats during PE class, unfortunately earning him unwanted attention from his classmates. Videl is especially suspicious of Gohan and spies on him to see if he is really the Gold Fighter. Videl confronts Gohan several times to voice her suspicions, but Gohan nervously denies them and uses his speed to escape from her spying. Gohan decides to use a disguise when fighting crime and goes to Bulma to make him a costume. While he waits for Bulma to finish his disguise, Gohan greets Trunks, who is being trained by Vegeta to surpass Gohan. When Vegeta appears, Gohan says hello, but the Saiyan prince simply replies to Gohan that he will get rusty if he overlooks his training. After a few hours, Bulma gives Gohan a device resembling a watch to instantly give him a disguise, leading Trunks to comment on how lame Gohan looked while wearing it. Thanking Bulma, Gohan went home. Telling the Flying Nimbus to fly home at maximum speed, Gohan expressed joy that his identity won't be so easily discovered while fighting crime. He uses the name "Great Saiyaman" to hide his identity so that the media will not bother his family.

However, while trying to convince Videl to let him return a stolen pterodactyl baby to its two pterodactyl parents, he accidentally reveals his identity to Videl, who then blackmails Gohan to compete against her in the newly revived World Martial Arts Tournament in exchange for her silence (In the manga, she very easily tricks Gohan into revealing his identity after stopping some thugs by asking the Great Saiyaman how he left class, and he answers her, revealing that he is actually Gohan). Gohan, having no experience with kids his own age, especially girls, is helpless against the confident Videl, who makes him promise to teach her how to fly.

At Capsule Corporation, Gohan tells Bulma about how he's being blackmailed into entering the World Martial Arts Tournament by Videl, who saw through his Great Saiyaman disguise. Bulma offers to fix his helmet so it alters his voice, but Gohan points out that he can't wear helmets or armor in the tournament and asks if there was something that could replace the helmet. Bulma comes up with a workaround, replacing the helmet with a bandanna and sunglasses, which unfortunately does little to reduce just how ridiculous the costume is. When Bulma points out that Gohan would have no challenge when he enters the Tournament, Vegeta enters, deciding to compete as well, wanting to see if he's surpassed Gohan by continuing to train while the young half Saiyan has grown complacent. Goku, listening in from the Other World, contacts them and tells them he'll compete too, using his one-day pass to the living world. To make it more interesting, and to give them a chance to meet Goku again, Gohan tells all his friends about the tournament, and they all decide to compete.

World Tournament Saga
His first stop is the Kame House, where Krillin lives with Android 18, and their daughter Marron. When Gohan reveals that the top 5 places win prize money, Android 18 quickly badgers Krillin into entering. Next, Gohan heads for The Lookout, where he tells Piccolo, Dende, and Mr. Popo about the upcoming tournament. Piccolo agrees to enter, but Dende refuses, since he's a healer, not a warrior. Gohan doesn't know where Tien Shinhan is, and Bulma would tell Yamcha, so that covers everyone Gohan knows. Gohan then begins to wonder how Chi-Chi would take the news that Goku was coming back, and if she'd even allow him to compete. As it turns out, once he mentions Goku and the prize money, Chi-Chi immediately gives him permission both to compete and to take time off from school to train for it.

The next day, Gohan's ready to get back to training, with the help of his brother, Goten. Gohan decides to begin his training by going Super Saiyan and practicing his reflexes. He gathers a pile of rocks, draws a line in the dirt, and tells Goten to throw the rocks at him from there. Goten asks if he's sure Gohan wants to start that close, but at Gohan's insistence, Goten throws a rock. Gohan is caught by surprise at how hard Goten can throw, and only manages to barely get out of the way as the rock flies at him, and it slams into the cliff behind him, smashing it. Realizing Goten's, a lot stronger than he was expecting, Gohan moves the line further back. Goten starts throwing the rocks again, and Gohan manages to dodge them easily now.

Eventually, Goten stops throwing the rocks and asks if he can go Super Saiyan like Gohan. Gohan laughs, telling him it would take a long time for him to be strong enough to go Super Saiyan, but then Goten goes Super Saiyan, utterly shocking Gohan to see his younger brother easily break his record as the youngest Super Saiyan ever. Changing his plan, Gohan asks him if he knows martial arts, and Goten tells him that Chi-Chi was teaching him how to fight while Gohan was working on homework. When Gohan asks if Chi-Chi knows Goten can go Super Saiyan, Goten says he showed her once, and she said it made him look like a punk. Knowing that feeling too well, Gohan laughs about it. As they practice fighting, Gohan manages to avoid one of Goten's kicks by flying into the air. Goten calls Gohan a cheater because Goten doesn't know how to fly, stumping Gohan again. Gohan then sees a familiar airplane fly by and realizes Videl's on her way to his house. Gohan tells Goten not to go Super Saiyan in front of her.

As they run back to their house, Goten is amazed at how strong Gohan was, but Gohan says Goten could enter the tournament too if he trained hard enough. Goten then tells Gohan that Trunks is even stronger than him, and Gohan starts to get worried that the kids will leave him in the dust if he's not careful. Gohan and Goten return to their house, where they find Videl and Chi-Chi in an argument. Gohan just sighs, saying he only wanted to train quietly. In the wilderness, Gohan begins to teach Goten and Videl how to fly, saying it's just a matter of controlling their energy, however, he learns that Videl has no knowledge of energy, since her father believes it to be just a trick. Goten demonstrates by shooting a Ki Blast and blowing up some rocks. Videl is very confused, so Gohan begins to train her from scratch, though she picks it up pretty quickly.

After eating lunch with Chi-Chi, Videl has managed to gain enough control of her ki to begin floating, much to Gohan's amazement. Goten, however, has rapidly mastered flight and is flying around freely. Gohan reassures Videl that once she gets some training, she'll be able to fly like him. Videl says she'll come back tomorrow to Gohan's surprise. Gohan says she's already learned all she needs to and can learn the rest on her own. Videl says she wants to learn more about Ki and asks if she's a bother to have around. Gohan says no, so Videl reaffirms that she'll come back tomorrow. Before Videl can leave, however, Gohan suggests she cut her hair short. Videl blushes a bit, thinking Gohan prefers girls with short hair. Gohan obliviously states that it's for practical reasons, since short hair would be better in a fight. Embarrassed, Videl yells that her hair is her business and flies off in her plane. Nevertheless, the next day, Videl returns with her hair cut short. Gohan finds himself confused, not understanding girls at all.

Videl is shown to be getting really good at ki control, as she's now floating a good ways above the ground. Goten, however, is still flying freely, and Videl wonders when she'll get that good. Gohan says that he doesn't know, so Videl says she'll come every day until she can. Gohan then suggests to Goten that he stop showing off while Videl's around.

Videl decides to take a break and tells Gohan not to say anything to her father about her learning to fly, because she wants it to be a surprise. She also doesn't want her father to know that she's going to a boy's house, since he won't let her go out with anybody weaker than him, but since he's the World Champion, she believes everybody's weaker than him. Gohan asks if she's ever practiced with her father, and she says no. Gohan grins, knowing Videl doesn't realize she's a lot stronger than Mr. Satan. Gohan changes the subject, asking if Videl would be disappointed if her father lost. Videl just laughs, saying she'd be glad to see someone knock her arrogant father down a peg, to Gohan's delight. Videl then asks who trained Gohan. Gohan answers that it was an old friend and his father, before he died. Videl asks if his father was strong, and Gohan confirms this. Goten then blurts out that their father is coming back for the tournament, despite Gohan just saying he died. Videl takes it that their father actually divorced their mother, and secretly told them he was coming back for the tournament, but not her. Videl then shrugs the whole thing off and they get back to training.

After ten days, Videl has developed her flight skills to the point of being able to fly freely, putting an end to her training with Gohan. This allows Gohan and Goten to get serious about their own training to get ready for the upcoming Tournament and their chance to see their father again.

On the day of the Tournament, the Dragon Team, and their family and friends go the arena in a plane being flown by Bulma. Gohan doubts his father will recognize Krillin with his hair, which makes Krillin chuckle. Gohan then asks Vegeta, Goten, and Trunks not to turn Super Saiyan at the tournament, with Bulma thinking that's a good idea since they'll be on TV and could be recognized from the battle with Cell. Vegeta thinks he could destroy all the TVs, but Gohan says he mustn't. Vegeta relents, though, saying he’ll win either way. The boys are okay with that, too. At the tournament, there's a huge crowd, and they don't see Goku anywhere. Goten then spots Piccolo, and Gohan goes over and asks him if he's seen his father, but he hasn't. Just then, Goku lands, with Fortuneteller Baba beside him. Almost everyone tears up and embraces him in an emotional reunion, and for the first time in his life, Goten meets his father. Piccolo suggests that they all hurry up and sign in. At the registration table, Trunks and Goten are forced to enter the Junior Division for everyone under fifteen.

At the start of the preliminaries, not including the Junior Division, there are 194 people present but only sixteen can participate. Mr. Satan will participate automatically, since he is the reigning champion, but they'll now pick the remaining fifteen using a Punch Machine. The fifteen highest scores will pass. Mr. Satan demonstrates the punch machine, saying no one can do better than him (Krillin smugly says otherwise). Piccolo telekinetically destroys all of the cameras and says he did it for Gohan, so his high school friends won't find out his true identity, much Gohan's delight. Gohan splits off from the group to find Videl, just as Mr. Satan prepares to use the punch machine. Goku, Krillin, Android 18, and Piccolo each give it a light tap and get in the 200's of it. Vegeta doesn't hold back at all and when he punches the machine, it is destroyed. Gohan asks Videl how well she can fly now, and she asks him why he isn't shocked that Vegeta destroyed the Punch Machine and how everyone in that group got over 200, and her dad's record was only 139. In the meantime, the rest of the contestants will have to wait for another punch machine, so Goku suggests to Vegeta they go watch the Junior Division. Videl continues wondering about that group, as they come over toward Gohan, with Goku noting that his friend was a girl. Krillin teasingly says she's a very cute girl. Goku says they're all going to watch Trunks and Goten, and then head off. Videl can't believe Gohan knows them, and he explains that the one in the orange gi was his father. Videl had thought his father was dead, and Gohan says that's why he has the halo above his head, much to her bewilderment.

The Junior Division begins, while Gohan and Videl are still lined up at the punch machine, unable to watch. Gohan and Videl finally arrive to witness the fight between Trunks and Goten. Goku and Gohan are surprised at how powerful the boys are, but Trunks uses an underhanded tactic to secure his victory over Goten. With Trunks' victory over Goten, he's earned the right to fight Mr. Satan in a special match. Goku, Krillin, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Android 18 walk off, knowing this fight is going to be as one sided as it gets. Gohan chooses to stay, since Videl is shocked, they don't want to watch Trunks fight Mr. Satan.

After the match, Gohan and Videl find Goku and the others eating lunch, and where the Saiyans demonstrate their huge appetites. After finishing up all their food, they head back to draw lots which determine the order in which the contestants will fight. As they walk around, they run into a strange pair: A tall, quiet man and a small man with spiked hair, who's floating. Piccolo and Goku are surprised by their appearance, as Videl comments on the floating. The little man says hello to Goku, explaining that he's heard of him. He has also passed the preliminaries and hopes to fight against Goku. He doubts he could beat Goku, but he'd love to find out how strong he really is. Then he wants to shake Goku's hand. They shake, and the guy says Goku does indeed have a good soul. The pair heads off, and Goku thinks it won't be so easy for them to win after all. Krillin didn't think anything special of them, though. Piccolo doubts those two were from Earth but wonders why aliens would be here. Videl asks about this alien business, and Gohan whispers to her that Piccolo's a bit strange, and she believes him because of his complexion. Krillin wants the drawing to hurry up and start. At the drawing, Gohan is pit against Kibito in the fourth match. Goku warns Gohan not to underestimate him.

As the tournament occurs, Krillin easily wins his match, but Piccolo, is uncharacteristically nervous and gives up against Shin, much to the others shock. When Videl faces Spopovich in the third match, she is nearly beaten to death by the large brute. Gohan watches in anger as his friend horribly suffers at the hands of the ruthless Spopovich. Despite the pleas of the crowd, Gohan, and even the World Tournament Announcer, Videl refuses to admit defeat. Finally, having seen enough, Gohan turns Super Saiyan and tries to save Videl from Spopovich, but before he can, Yamu interrupts and tells for Spopovich to finish the match because they have much more important things in the matter. Spopovich kicks Videl out of the ring and leaves with Yamu, but not before being told by the angry Gohan that he will win the next time they fight. Goku quickly uses Instant Transmission to head for Korin Tower to get some Senzu Beans. Meanwhile, Gohan takes Videl to the infirmary, where Mr. Satan arrives shortly thereafter to check on her. Gohan promises to beat Spopovich for Videl. Mr. Satan, hearing this, worries that his daughter is dating a "wuss" like Gohan.

The announcer informs the crowd that Videl's life is not in danger, and starts to announce the fourth match, but Gohan rushes out to ask him to wait because they're getting a special medicine for Videl. Goku then returns with three Senzu Beans and Gohan asks Kibito to hold on for just a bit longer while he helps Videl. Gohan goes into the medical room and tells Videl to eat the bean, but the doctor protests him giving weird food to his patients. Videl says that since it's Gohan, something strange will probably happen. Mr. Satan tells her not to listen to him and spit the bean out, but she chews it anyway.

With Videl fully healed, Gohan returned to the tournament and found himself set up to fight Kibito. After his classmates in the stadium cheer for him, Gohan realizes he is completely exposed without his cape and turban, and sighs as he tosses away his sunglasses. In order for Shin and Kibito to find Babidi's Spaceship, they are forced into tricking Gohan into turning into a Super Saiyan. However, Gohan states that there is a level beyond a Super Saiyan and transforms into his Super Saiyan 2 form, shocking the audience, while revealing that he was the mysterious Gold Fighter. At that moment, Yamu and Spopovich jump into the ring and Shin paralyzes Gohan when he is about to attack. Yamu and Spopovich steal Gohan's energy, reverting him back to his normal state, and fly off, with Shin and the other Z Fighters in pursuit. Kibito heals Gohan, restoring his energy and explains they are going after Spopovich and Yamu to find Babidi's spaceship. Gohan and Kibito, along with Videl, fly away to meet up with the Z Fighters and the Supreme Kai.

Kibito tells them a story about a wizard and a demon. Long ago, deep in space, there was a very evil mage named Bibidi. One day, Bibidi created an incredible monster, a demon called "Majin Buu", who had no reason or emotion. He was a creature born only to bring terror and death. In a matter of years, hundreds of planets were destroyed. There were previously five Supreme Kais, who all held the power to defeat someone like Frieza in a single attack, but four of them were killed by Majin Buu, who's ferocity was controlled only by Bibidi. However, Bibidi was soon unable to control Majin Buu and sealed him inside a magic ball to transport him from planet to planet. Bibidi brought the ball to Earth, which was intended to be his next target. Shin waited for this chance, and, before Buu's seal was released, he was able to kill Bibidi. The ball, in which Majin Buu is contained, remained sealed, without being destroyed. Kibito and Shin thought it best to not unnecessarily disturb it. Moreover, the only one who could release the seal was Bibidi. However, just recently, they learned something terrible: Bibidi had a son who is currently on Earth. His name is Babidi, and his purpose is to revive Majin Buu and continue where his father left off. The only way to stop Majin Buu's revival is to stop Babidi. Kibito explains that, in order to resurrect Buu, Babidi needs to collect pure energy. He then admits they knew Spopovich and Yamu would attack Gohan when he transformed into a Super Saiyan, but they needed the attack to occur so they could follow Spopovich and Yamu and find where Majin Buu was hidden.

After flying for a time, Videl gets tired and decides to head back to the World Tournament, seeing as the opponent they are going to face is too powerful for her. However, before leaving, she and Gohan have a conversation about the identity of the Gold Fighter, who is actually Gohan. Figuring this out, Videl comes to the conclusion that seven years ago during the Cell Games, Gohan was the golden-haired boy who had killed Cell, not Mr. Satan. Gohan and Videl say goodbye to each other and Videl promises that she is not through with him yet, indicating that she has fallen for him. Gohan and Kibito later catch up with Shin and the Z Fighters at Babidi's spaceship. The group lands on a nearby hill and suppress their Ki so they aren't detected. They watch as Spopovich and Yamu talk to Pui Pui, and realize that Babidi had hidden his spaceship underground, which likely means Babidi knows Shin and Kibito are there. Piccolo suggests they attack before they get a chance to resurrect Majin Buu, but Shin advises them to be patient, saying that Babidi will most likely release Buu outside of his ship. Gohan glances off to the side and spots a slaughtered family nearby, angering him. Just then, Piccolo sees someone coming out of the ship. It is the evil wizard Babidi and Dabura.

Kibito and Shin panic when they realize that Babidi has taken control of Dabura, king of the Demon Realm. Goku asks if he's the big guy, and Shin says yes. He explains that he's the king of the Dark Demon Realm. In this world, they may be the strongest, but in the Demon World, Dabura is the top. Krillin starts to get worried, as Gohan realizes the smaller one must be the wizard Babidi. Shin says that he may have little physical strength, but Babidi uses incredible magic, enough to make even Dabura his underling. Kibito explains that Babidi takes advantage of the evil in one's heart and controls them via their thoughts. Thus, a demon like Dabura was a suitable choice. That's why only people like them, without evil in their hearts, can fight Babidi. Shin says they really hadn't counted on Dabura being here, and Vegeta asks if they think they can't win. Vegeta says that Majin Buu won't be revived, because he won’t lose to guys like this. Goku tells Krillin he should leave, and he agrees. However, when Yamu and Spopovich give the energy to the evil wizard, Babidi retaliates by killing them. Dabura and Babidi realize the Z Fighters are nearby and decide to steal their energy by killing the weaker fighters and luring them into the spaceship. Dabura flies up to the Z Fighters and kills Kibito with a Evil Impulse blast at point blank range. After a brief fight, Dabura spits on Krillin and Piccolo, turning them to stone, and flies back to the spaceship. Goku asks if there's a way to restore Krillin and Piccolo, and Shin says only if Dabura dies. Goku is glad it’s such a simple method. Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta go after Dabura with a reluctant Shin following behind.

When they get inside the spaceship, they are told they must defeat the three fighters if they want to destroy Babidi and leave the ship. When the first fighter, Pui Pui, appears, Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta play Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who gets to fight first. In the end, Vegeta wins the game, and steps up to fight Pui Pui. Pui Pui reveals that if they take any damage, it will be converted to energy for Majin Buu. Vegeta effortlessly overwhelms Pui Pui without having to transform. In order for his minion to gain an advantage, Babidi teleports the interior of the room to Pui Pui's homeworld: Zoon. However, Vegeta's gravity training made him immune to the increased weight of the planet and Pui Pui was easily slaughtered by Vegeta's Double Galick Cannon. With the defeat of Pui Pui, they can proceed to the next stage. Goku becomes impatient, while Vegeta contemplates just destroying the floor, but Shin insists he mustn't, lest he disturb Majin Buu. Vegeta thinks this Majin Buu is probably nothing special, just like Dabura. Goku agrees, thinking Dabura is probably about as strong as Cell was seven years ago.

Next at level two, Babidi sends Yakon to obtain energy from the three Saiyans and Goku takes his turn to fight the giant green beast. After a quick fight, Babidi cautiously decides to transfer the warriors to Yakon's homeworld, Planet Ankoku, so that he could fight at his best. Upon arrival, it is apparent that the name holds up, as the planet is pitch black. Yakon believes he has the upper hand, seeing as how this is his homeworld and that he is apparently nocturnal. However, he soon realized just what he is up against when Goku, despite some surprise at the new environment, easily beats him around. Goku explains that he can feel and sense out Yakon's movements without even needing to see. Nevertheless, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, lighting up the surrounding area. Yakon proceeds to suck in Goku's energy, making him revert to his base form. Gohan yells out to his father to not become a Super Saiyan anymore, because the monster eats light energy. Yakon confirms this, but he would still love to have another serving of that great light. Goku sees right through the technique and allows Yakon to suck in another batch of light energy. Only this time, Goku shows off a hint of his Super Saiyan 2 power and Yakon swallows too much, which obliterates him. With Yakon's death, the four fighters proceed to level three.

While they wait for the next fighter, Goku asks Gohan if he has trained enough, since his turn is next. Vegeta says that Gohan has gotten weaker in these times of peace and that he and Goku are stronger than him now. Although Vegeta believes if he were to lose his temper like with Cell, then Gohan could release his full power. Suddenly, the door begins to open and Dabura, the last and strongest of Babidi's fighters, enters the room. Dabura praises them on defeating Yakon and making it to Stage Three but doubts they can defeat him. Vegeta says Babidi must be getting desperate to send him out so soon. Dabura simply chuckles and tells them all to attack, but Gohan says that he'll be the one to defeat Dabura and demands that Babidi transport them somewhere else. Babidi asks Dabura where he would like to fight, and the demon king replies that he wishes to fight on a world similar to Earth. They are transported to a mountainous range and engage in battle.

At first, Gohan is fighting a little rusty against Dabura due to not training during the seven years after the Cell Games, but after transforming into his Super Saiyan 2 form, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the Demon King. Dabura begins to use his Evil Flame multiple times, all of which Gohan dodges. When Gohan attempts to hit him, Dabura uses the Afterimage Technique to go further away and hits him with an Evil Impulse blast, which sends the young half-Saiyan into the surrounding water. Gohan flies back up to the surface and throws away his tattered Great Saiyaman clothes, which leaves only his black tights. Gohan flies toward Dabura again, but the demon spits at him. Gohan puts his hand up just in time to block it, so it hits his glove, and he quickly tosses the glove away as it turns to stone. Dabura then magically creates a sword and attempts to cut`Gohan, but the half-Saiyan quickly catches it, and snaps the blade in half. Vegeta becomes disgraced with Gohan's lack of motivation and expresses his frustration, believing Gohan to have peaked in power.

Blinded by anger, Vegeta says he will end the fight himself, but Goku intervenes, saying that it's still Gohan's turn and he hasn't lost yet. However, Vegeta says that he doesn't care about Babidi or his minions and only wants to settle his rivalry with Goku. Dabura notices Vegeta's frustration and stops the fight with Gohan to report his findings to Babidi. Gohan asks him why he's running away from their fight. Dabura replies that he's not running away, he's just found another warrior for him to fight.

Gohan, Goku, Shin, and Vegeta ponder as to whom Dabura is referring to. Vegeta begins yelling at Gohan, claiming that he's weak and should have destroyed Dabura by now. Gohan realizes that Vegeta is right and if he had defeated Dabura, then Piccolo and Krillin would be restored. Goku tries to vouch for his son, but Vegeta begins yelling at him too, and prepares to blow up the ship. Shin tries to stop him, and Vegeta threatens to kill him too, until Goku grabs his hand and stops the attack as he sternly tells Vegeta to not blow up the ship and Vegeta reluctantly agrees. Shin then realizes that Vegeta is the new fighter that Dabura was talking about. Soon, Vegeta's mind is taken over by Babidi's dark magic, transforming him into Majin Vegeta and releasing the evil in his heart. Babidi transports them to the World Tournament arena, where Majin Vegeta destroys parts of the stadium, killing many people to convince Goku to fight him. Goku notes that Vegeta allowed himself to fall to Babidi's spell and agrees to battle only if they were transported somewhere without innocent people.

Shin attempts to intervene, saying that the fate of the universe is more important than settling a petty grudge and steps between the two Saiyans to prevent a fight that would hasten Majin Buu's revival. In response, Goku threatens to attack the Supreme Kai with a Ki Blast, shocking Shin, Gohan, and even Vegeta. Realizing the futility of intervention and that they will inevitably fight, Shin reluctantly steps out of Goku's way. Goku apologizes for his actions and the four fighters are then taken to a Rocky Canyon. Shin informs Goku that he and Gohan will take care of Dabura and Babidi while he fights Vegeta. Even though he preferred not to, Shin says they must smash through the ship to reach the wizard. Babidi orders Majin Vegeta to kill Shin, but he refuses, saying that Babidi can take over his mind and body, but he can never control a Saiyan's pride. At Dabura's suggestion, Babidi opens the door for Shin, so he won’t risk Majin Buu being revived at less than full strength. They prepare to hop down the hole, but first, Goku gives Gohan one of the two remaining Senzu Beans, and tells him to eat it now. Goku also tells him to get angry like he had when fighting Cell, as it will bring out the depths of his power. If he does that, there's no one he can lose to. Gohan says that he is sorry this all had to happen on his one-day back on Earth and says goodbye to his father as he and Shin head down Babidi's spaceship to confront the evil wizard, while Goku and Majin Vegeta fight their intense battle.

After easily defeating many weak henchmen, Gohan and Shin make it to the bottom of the ship where Babidi, Dabura, and the Sealed Ball containing Majin Buu is. Shin and Babidi snidely greet each other, and he tells Gohan he'll fight Babidi. Babidi suggests they all return to the surface, as Majin Buu will soon be at full power and might destroy the ship when he emerges from his ball. Shin agrees, even though he won't allow that to happen. They are suddenly transported outside, along with Majin Buu's ball. Babidi asks Dabura if he can defeat Gohan, and the demon king says there is no doubt now that he has seen his fighting capabilities. Gohan remembers his father's words and tries getting angry as he turns Super Saiyan. Babidi says he won't be done in like his father, as he has greater magic power than him and Dabura's here this time. Suddenly, the meter on Majin Buu's ball begins beeping, and Babidi looks down to see that it’s already full. Babidi is extremely elated with excitement. Shin can't believe Goku has already taken so much damage. Gohan realizes it must be because his father and Vegeta are likely both fighting at the level well beyond Super Saiyan, so the damage must be incredible.

Majin Buu's cocoon begins to erupt large amounts of smoke and steam. Dabura and Babidi smile in excitement for the revival of Bibidi's original creation. Gohan and Shin also watch in complete terror. As the cocoon begins to crack, Supreme Kai orders Gohan to run away, as they do not stand a chance when the legendary Majin Buu will finally emerge from his prison. Gohan, however, refuses to run, not wanting to let his father down and make the same mistakes he did when toying with Cell seven years ago. Gohan powers up and fires an Electric Kamehameha one after another attempting to destroy the cocoon and Majin Buu along with it, but the cocoon is unaffected.

The cocoon finally stops steaming and hatches, but nothing is inside. As Majin Buu has not emerged from his ball, Shin thinks that due to being sealed up for millions of years, Majin Buu must have grown drastically weaker, and thus, Gohan's Kamehameha was enough to destroy the monster. As Babidi begins to growl, thinking that the Supreme Kai is possibly right, Shin states that Vegeta and Goku's battle will take quite a while due to them being almost equal, so he tells Gohan to get angry and defeat Dabura while he takes on Babidi, and everything should return to normal. However, only Gohan knows that something did come out of the cocoon, and it was forming something up into the sky. The steam that erupted from the cocoon forms into a pink, fat creature: Majin Buu.

Majin Buu
Initially, Gohan is unsure if this creature is the genocidal monster the Supreme Kai built him up to be. Gohan asks Shin if this being is actually Buu, and the Supreme Kai confirms him with certainty, still trembling and sweating in fear just looking at Buu. Gohan starts to notice Buu's incredible high ki level, but still believes he can destroy Buu if he focuses all his energy into one devastating attack. Babidi attempts to control Majin Buu, however the fat creature ignores his commands and playfully scares the wizard by making a frightening face, which leaves Gohan very confused. Dabura, now tired of Majin Buu's behavior, insults him by calling him a fat, stupid loser. Buu hears this harsh remark and approaches Dabura. Gohan, now having seen Buu's behavior for a few minutes, believes that Shin was mistaken about the creature. However, Shin states that the creature is Buu, and he will kill them. Suddenly, Majin Buu releases steam from his body and punches Dabura right in his eyes, gouging them, and kicks the demon king into a nearby mountain, which leaves everyone shocked.

Babidi praises Buu for his spectacular feat of strength, as Gohan and Shin look at Buu in total despair, terrified of the monster's power and unpredictable behavior. Gohan says that due to the Majin's childlike attitude, if Babidi was killed, Buu might become less of a threat. Shin replies that it wouldn't work and reminds Gohan that Babidi is the only one who can seal Buu away back into his ball. Shin informs Gohan the only solution now may be to hope over time, Babidi will become tired of Buu's disobedience and seal him away again. Frustrated, Shin blames himself for this mistake and states that if he knew that there were mortals who were stronger than him, he would have used his alternative solution. Gohan becomes very curious, but Shin says it's too late and they won't survive the wrath of Majin Buu. Meanwhile, Babidi gains control over the Majin by threatening to seal him away again and orders Buu to kill them both. Gohan grabs the Supreme Kai's hand and flies away, hoping he can outrun Buu until they can reach a safe spot. In a few seconds, Buu swiftly appears right in front of Gohan and mocks him. As Gohan stares in shock at Buu's speed, the Majin swats the half-Saiyan out of the air and into the rocks. Shin looks in shock as Buu begins to menacingly approach him. Shin uses a Kiai to defend himself, but the attack barely pushes Buu back. In response, Buu pummels the Supreme Kai as an injured Gohan watches.

Babidi rushes to their location and proceeds to mock Shin for the position he is in and decides to kill the Supreme Kai himself. Just before Babidi can deal the final blow, Gohan swiftly kicks Majin Buu in face, much to the wizard's surprise. Unimpressed, Buu gets back on his feet and proceeds to heal the dent in his face. Babidi growls in frustration at the delay of the Supreme Kai's death. Gohan looks onto Buu in fear, noticing the attack did not leave any lasting damage. Buu becomes annoyed with Gohan and exclaims that he will die now. Gohan is shocked, but quickly gets angry, preparing to punch the pink monster. Buu extends his hands and fires a large sphere of energy that blasts Gohan into the sky, before eventually flying off too far to be visible to a naked eye. Babidi exclaims he cannot see Gohan anymore and hopes he flies off the face of the planet. With the last of his strength, the weakened Shin uses his psychic powers to destroy the attack and a beaten Gohan falls down into a nearby forest, unconscious and near death. His sudden decrease in energy causes several characters, like Goku and Vegeta, to mistakenly believe that Gohan was killed by Innocent Buu.

Fortunately, when Kibito is brought back to life by the Dragon Balls he locates and heals Shin. They find Gohan in the forest and bring him to the Sacred World of the Kai to be healed. After being healed, Gohan wakes up, and wonders where they are. When he hears Sacred World of the Kai, Gohan figures he's dead, but realizes that he doesn't have a halo like his father. Shin tells Gohan that it was a close call, but he managed to survive Majin Buu's attack. Kibito says that originally, no mortals, or Guardians, or even low-ranking Kais could come to this sacred land. Gohan remembers that Kibito should have been killed by Dabura, and asks if he revived himself. Kibito says no and he doesn't actually know how he came back to life. Gohan asks why he's here, and Kibito says that he would like to know as well. Shin tells Gohan that he wants him to use the Z Sword to defeat Majin Buu. Kibito panics and says there's no way a mortal could ever use that legendary blade, because no one, not even the previous Supreme Kais have been able to wield it. Shin tells Kibito that he doesn't know how unbelievably incredible Gohan's power really is, since he was dead. Shin wants to try at least, so the three of them fly off toward its location.

As they fly along, Gohan is enraptured by the beautiful landscape of the Sacred World of the Kai and says it reminds him of Mount Paozu. Kibito tells Gohan that his tattered clothes are too inappropriate for this sacred land, and so he magically gives the half-Saiyan a uniform just like his own. Shin thinks it looks good on him, but Gohan feels weird looking just like Kibito. The three of them land atop a very tall, thin pillar-like plateau, where the Z Sword is stuck in the ground with only the hilt visible. Shin asks Gohan to pull it out and states that no one has ever been able to pull it out of the rock. Gohan says this reminds him of an old story on Earth and asks what will happen when he pulls the Z Sword out. Kibito says he's supposed to gain tremendous power, probably more than enough to beat Majin Buu. Gohan is amazed, but Kibito assures him he can't pull it out anyway. Shin tells him to shut up and watch. Gohan starts pulling with all of his might, but it won't come out. Gohan then stops and grasps his hands in pain, while Kibito smirks. Gohan then transforms into a Super Saiyan (or a Super Saiyan 2 in the anime due to the electrical sparks in his aura), but Kibito doubts it will make much of a difference. Gohan starts pulling again, and he still struggles, but it eventually begins to budge. Gohan pulls it all the way out, shocking Kibito and making Shin happy.

Back on the ground, Shin asks how the sword is. Gohan, no longer Super Saiyan, says it's heavy, but it doesn't seem like there's much power in it. He doubts it could really beat Buu. Kibito says of course it can, so long as the wielder is able to use it freely. Gohan asks Kibito to try holding it, and hands the sword over to him. Kibito immediately drops it, leaving a huge dent in the ground, and can't get it up again. Kibito plays that down, but then nervously yells that he must be able to use the sword freely. Meanwhile, on Earth, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 in order to combat Innocent Buu and give Trunks enough time to retrieve the Dragon Radar from West City. The sheer power of this transformation causes the Earth to shake. Even Gohan stops his Z Sword training to wonder if that massive ki belongs to his father. Shin says it really is Goku, and Kibito can't believe that his power could reach their sacred land. Gohan wonders to himself what is going on Earth. In the anime, Shin claims that this may be a battle that Goku cannot win and that the key to defeating Majin Buu rests on Gohan to master the Z Sword. Gohan then resumes his training while Kibito doubts that Gohan can master the blade after previous Supreme Kais failed to even wield it.

As Gohan continues training, Shin comments that he has gained more control over the Z Sword in such as small amount of time. Gohan remembers that his father continued to train in the Other World and that he has to become stronger even if just a little bit as Majin Buu is still alive. Elsewhere, Goku is forced to return to the afterlife, and he immediately sets out to find Gohan in Other World. He learns from King Yemma that Gohan is still alive and teleports to the Sacred World of the Kai to find Gohan practicing with the Z Sword. Everyone is shocked to see him. Goku wonders about Gohan's Supreme Kai clothes, and then notices Shin and Kibito, who freaks out that there's yet another mortal on their holy ground. Gohan asks why he's here, saying that his 24 hours aren't up yet, and so Goku explains everything that has happened after Gohan's disappearance. Some time passes, and Gohan contemplates everything Majin Buu has done to the Earth. Goku asks Gohan if he can hold the Z Sword, and says it really is very heavy, swinging it around a bit. Goku asks Shin if he can stay on his world until Gohan goes to fight Buu, and also asks if he can have some food. Shin asks Gohan if he also wants to rest, and so they all head off. Gohan tells Goku that his Super Saiyan 3 form is amazing, and Goku offers to show his son the transformation after they eat.

The next day, after seeing Gohan's excellent progress with the Z Sword, Goku decides to test its strength by throwing a huge boulder, which Gohan easily slices in half. Shin thinks they should test it with something harder and summons a large cube of Katchin, the densest metal in the universe, to see if Gohan can slice through it as well. However, when Goku throws the Katchin at Gohan, the Z Sword snaps in two. Everyone is completely shocked, and Goku blames the Supreme Kai, but Shin says that the legendary sword was supposed to hold the greatest power. Gohan thinks the legend may have been exaggerated, as he drops the sword’s broken remains. Gohan does perk up and says that his physical strength has increased, since the Z Sword was so heavy. Maybe that was the source of its great power, and Shin enthusiastically agrees that Gohan has probably powered up greatly. However, Goku is unsure if that's enough to beat Majin Buu.

Suddenly, an old man in a Supreme Kai outfit appears and says that's not it. Everyone wonders who he is, and the old man says he's a Supreme Kai from fifteen generations ago, shocking Shin and Kibito. Old Kai explains that many eons ago, a terrible bad person, not as terrible as Majin Buu, sealed him away in the Z sword. The person did it because he was afraid of the Old Kai's "fearsomeness" (It is later revealed that Old Kai was referring to Beerus the Destroyer and he apparently lied about the reason of his sealing. He was most likely posturing in an attempt to impress Shin and the others.) Goku thinks the elder Kai doesn't look particularly strong and decides to test him by shooting a blast at him. It hits Old Kai right in the face, and he hits the ground hard. Shin and Kibito immediately rush to his aid and Old Kai angrily curses Goku out. Goku figures that he's just another hot-tempered old windbag.

Old Kai says the bad guy wasn't afraid of his physical strength, but his fearsome abilities. Goku is curious, but Old Kai pettily says he's not telling, childishly sticking his tongue out. Goku offers him some adult magazines if he tells, but Old Kai says he can just watch girls bathe or undress with his godly eyes, much to Shin and Kibito's embarrassment. Goku then offers him a chance to grope the breasts of a real woman, thinking he's the same type as Master Roshi. As expected, Old Kai quickly agrees. Gohan is curious about what he's up to, and so Goku says that when Gohan gets back to the living world, he can ask Videl to do it. Naturally, Gohan isn't pleased by his father's request and furiously declines. Goku relents and asks Old Kai if instead he'd mind an older woman. Goku asks Gohan to tell Bulma the circumstances, and Gohan says that he can't ask her something like that. Goku asks Old Kai if this ability can beat Majin Buu, and he says it's not guaranteed, but most likely it will. Goku says she could save the universe just by getting felt up a little, but Gohan thinks that's sexual harassment and he would surely be killed by Bulma. But Goku isn't listening to Gohan and shakes Old Kai's hand in agreement.

Now that it's settled, Old Kai explains his unique ability: He can draw out anyone's latent potential and push them far beyond their natural limits. Goku says that he already knows about that ability and that it's actually common, but Old Kai insists no one else can do it well beyond the limits like he can. He looks at Gohan, seeing that he was the one who pulled the Z Sword out, and says that he can surely make someone who could pull out that sword and swing it around into the strongest in the universe. Though, he'd hoped the one who'd free him from the sword would be a fellow Supreme Kai, not a mortal. Shin solemnly apologizes for his weakness. Old Kai tells Gohan to stand still and then, he starts doing some dancing, circling around the young Saiyan. Confused, Gohan asks why he is dancing, but Old Kai tells him to be quiet, for this is an important ritual. Goku asks how long this will take, and Old Kai says five hours for the ritual, twenty hours for the power up. Goku decides to take a nap, while Kibito and Shin watch. Gohan is frustrated that he must now stay still and wait for Old Kai to finish in the next twenty-five hours.

After the dancing ritual is completed, Old Kai sits down and tells Gohan he can sit too if he wants. Shin wakes up Goku and praises Old Kai. Goku asks Gohan if he feels stronger, but Old Kai says that the process will take twenty more hours before Gohan feels anything. In the meantime, he must remain in a strict meditative state. Gohan complains, but Old Kai says it's a small price to pay for greater power. Gohan reluctantly agrees and meditates, while Old Kai draws out his potential.

Sometime later, Gohan peeks his eyes open and notices that Old Kai is asleep, and yells at him. The old man insists that he's awake, and says no more talking, then dozes off again. Gohan begins to wonder if this is hopeless or not. In the anime, Old Kai watches women's aerobics on TV and asks Gohan about Bulma's appearance for when he gropes her. Suddenly, Shin senses trouble on Earth as Innocent Buu splits into his good and evil halves and remerges into a new stronger form.

This new Majin Buu tracks down the remaining members of the Dragon Team to The Lookout and proceeds to use the Human Extinction Attack to kill off the remaining people on the planet. As Goku, Shin, and Kibito observe what is happening down on Earth, Gohan grows increasingly impatient as Old Kai reads and laughs at comics instead of unlocking his power. Gohan tells Old Kai they should have finished hours ago, and the Supreme Kai says that Gohan must still have plenty of potential power. Gohan soon loses his patience and angrily powers up, displaying an amazing power that illuminates the Supreme Kai planet. However, amazed at realizing that some of his power really was unlocked, Gohan apologizes to Old Kai and resumes the ritual.

Later, Goku comments that Majin Buu's energy has vanished, and Shin notices it as well. Kibito asks if he is dead. Goku says that he doesn't know, and he also can't feel the boy's energy anymore, but it didn't seem like they fought. Old Kai says they've been fighting in the alternate dimension of time and space. Goku doesn't understand what he means, but then realizes it must be the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He wonders why they've been fighting in there, and Old Kai explains that Piccolo led Majin Buu in there for some reason. Suddenly, Goku notices that Majin Buu's energy has returned, meaning he's escaped from the Time Chamber, but Gotenks hasn't. Goku really wants to see what's going on. Hearing this, Old Kai materializes a Crystal Ball and tosses it over to Goku and Shin so they can watch the events. Goku looks into the crystal ball and is amazed he can see the Lookout. Buu turns everyone into chocolate and devours them to satiate his hunger, much to Goku's shock. Gohan wants to know what's going on, but Goku tells him he just needs to keep concentrating on the ritual.

After Gotenks' fusion runs out of time, Goku asks Old Kai to hurry, as the boys are now utterly helpless against Super Buu. Old Kai says Gohan can go, as he's been done for about five minutes now. Gohan asks why he didn't say so sooner, and Old Kai says it's more dramatic this way. Gohan realizes he has to hurry and asks how he can tap into his hidden power. Old Kai tells him to power up like he does for the Super Saiyan transformation; however, when he does, his appearance does not change, but his power and strength gain an awesome increase. Shin says they need to hurry to Earth, but Kibito says he'll take Gohan alone, as the two of them would just get in his way and intends to leave right after he takes him. Goku feels bad that he can't take Gohan himself and wishes that he could've watched him grow up. He says they won't meet again until Gohan dies and comes to the Other World himself. Goku tells him good luck, to beat up Super Buu, and they then hug.

On Earth, Gohan asks Kibito to give him the same clothes as his father to honor him. Before leaving, Kibito says he'll be praying for him from the Sacred World of the Kai, and Gohan says to give his regards to the two Supreme Kais. With his power finally released and the fate of the world now in his hands, Gohan flies off to confront the new Majin Buu: Super Buu.

Gohan arrives on the battlefield where he finds Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo, who reveal that all of their friends and family were killed and eaten by Super Buu. Gohan is angry about this at first, until he senses Dende's faint energy signature, meaning the Dragon Balls can still be used. An enraged Gohan walks up to Buu, staring him down. Buu asks if he's foolish enough to fight him, but Gohan reveals that he's fully intent on killing Buu. Super Buu scoffs at this, saying that he's already beaten Gohan before, and he'll do it again. Gohan powers up and completely outclasses Super Buu and batters the monster with his Burst Rush attack, much to the shock of Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. No matter how much he tries, Buu is unable to land any damage on Gohan, who easily dodges and blocks all of the monster's strongest attacks.

Suddenly, Super Buu realizes it was Gohan who he had sensed earlier and concludes that he must've been preparing to fight him, but he can't allow anyone to become stronger than him. Gohan mocks Buu and says that he cannot defeat him. In an act of desperation, Super Buu attempts to self-destruct and take Gohan with him, but Gohan sees through this and grabs and flies away with Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks before they are all caught in the explosion.

After getting to a safe distance, Gohan says that Buu didn't die when he self-destructed, nor was he trying to kill him with it or else the planet would have been destroyed. Piccolo says can't feel his energy at all, but Gohan says he's hiding it and figures he must be planning something. Trunks says that even if Buu is alive, Gohan can easily take care of him and says he's as strong as their Super Gotenks. Goten says he's even stronger and Trunks admits maybe a little. Piccolo asks Gohan how he even got this strong, and Gohan explains how he had become very powerful through Old Kai's magic ritual. Gohan then wants to know who has the Dragon Radar, and Trunks says that Piccolo has it. Piccolo says that with Dende dead, the Dragon Balls are useless, but Gohan points out a faint ki he sensed: Dende's. The four of them fly off toward Dende, before Buu can regenerate.

Along the way, they find an exhausted Mr. Satan and his adopted dog, Bee, who were wandering around in the desert. Trunks suggests that they leave him alone, but Piccolo thinks they should bring him along since he did try to stop Majin Buu, in his own way. Piccolo picks up Mr. Satan, and Goten carries Bee. Piccolo wonders why Dende alone would have survived, since Buu had plenty of time to kill him. Gohan says that Goku informed him that Piccolo and Gotenks left the Hyperbolic Time Chamber almost immediately after Buu did, so Buu probably didn't have much time, since time works differently inside of the Chamber. Piccolo realizes he'd gotten mixed up, and it had only been ten seconds in this dimension. Soon enough, they spot Dende, who is excited to see everyone. Dende explains that Mr. Popo threw him off of The Lookout when Buu escaped from the Time Chamber, since he must live, and Piccolo thanks Mr. Popo for his quick thinking.

After an hour has passed, they suddenly feel Super Buu approaching. Gohan says that he will finish off Buu and tells everyone to make sure they don't get caught up the fight. Gohan is also curious to see what he's come up with in the last hour. A confident Super Buu arrives, and Gohan thinks to himself that nothing seems to have changed. Trunks thinks that Buu is bluffing and will just run away again. Buu looks over and yells that he wants to fight the boys again. Gohan refuses, saying he is Buu's opponent, but Buu insists that he wants to settle the score with them before fighting Gohan. Gohan wonders why, but Buu ignores him and accuses the boys of being too scared, intentionally provoking their fragile egos. Humiliated, Trunks and Goten foolishly decide to fuse again to fight Buu, but Piccolo obviously thinks something strange is going on. Full of arrogance, Trunks tells Piccolo that Buu is too stupid to have any sort of plan. Against Piccolo's wishes, the cocky pair of Saiyans quickly perform Fusion and become Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. Falling into his trap, Gotenks, along with Piccolo, are absorbed into Super Buu, who sneakily used severed pieces of his own body to envelop them.

Super Buu quickly transforms before Gohan can react. His head tentacle is now elongated, extending down to his knees, similar to that of a Super Saiyan 3's hair, and he is wearing Gotenks' vest. Buu asks Gohan what he thinks about his new form and says he should be honored to witness the birth of the strongest Majin. Gohan calls him a coward for sneaking up on them, but Buu blames him for getting too strong. Buu explains that when he felt Gohan's existence from far away, he realized that the half-Saiyan might be stronger, so he started planning to absorb Gotenks to become the strongest in the universe. But, since the fusion's power had a time limit, Buu decided to stall for an hour and absorb the boys at their full power. Gohan says that Buu's stupidity still hasn’t changed, as it would’ve been smarter to just absorb him instead and become even stronger. Buu realizes Gohan doesn't get it and tells him there's no point of being the strongest if there's no one to fight and killing him is his greatest motivation. Buu says he will end this fight quick, because of Gotenks' time limit. Gohan says that's smart thinking and Buu was clever to absorb Piccolo as well.

As the battle begins, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the new Super Buu until Buu starts playing mind games with him. Once Gohan gets frustrated, Buu begins thrashing Gohan, all the while using Piccolo's intelligence to continue playing mind games and further torment Gohan (In the manga, Gohan was never able to land a single blow on Buu after he absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo. In the anime, the fight is fairly evenly matched at the start before Gohan starts to tire out, giving Buu the upper hand.) Super Buu tries to find a hiding Gohan and taunts him for masking his energy and saying he has no chance, which angers the half-Saiyan. An angry Gohan flies at Buu with a kick, but Buu dodges it by leaning back and kicks Gohan into the air, before firing Gotenks' Super Donut Chain at him, restraining the half-Saiyan. Buu laughs, asking what if feels like to be done in by his friend's technique. Buu prepares to use another of their techniques, the Kamehameha, on the trapped warrior, but Gohan breaks free of the donuts just in time to dodge it. Buu is left impressed by his persistence. Gohan hides from Super Buu, but the Majin easily tracks him down and continues to taunt him.

Gohan tries to attack but Buu dodges and effortlessly knocks the half-Saiyan into the ground. Gohan fires a blast at Buu from the rubble, but Buu reflects it back at Gohan. It causes considerable damage to Earth, creating an explosion big enough that it can be seen from outer space. Super Buu then flies underground into the hole created by the blast to find Gohan. Buu says he has ten minutes and Gohan will continue to entertain him until then, before ruthlessly pummeling him. Gohan is sent flying back onto Earth's surface from an attack from Buu and lies on the ground, badly injured. Dende rushes over to heal him, as Buu prepares to finish Gohan off. Gohan thanks Dende and returns to his feet, healed. Buu briefly wonders if Dende was the one who healed Gohan, but then realizes Gohan didn't get any stronger and says he is delaying the inevitable. Buu sends a Kiai towards Gohan, then decides to kill Dende. He sends a blast towards Dende and Mr. Satan attempts to shoot it with his gun, to no avail. Luckily, the pair is saved when the blast is suddenly deflected. It is revealed that it was Tien Shinhan who redirected it with a Tri-Beam. Gohan is shocked and Tien remarks that Gohan has grown unbelievably, though not as much as Majin Buu. Super Buu charges an attack capable of destroying the entire Earth and dares anyone to stop him.

At the last second, however, Goku appears (after receiving a pair of Potara Earrings and a new life from Old Kai) and throws a Destructo Disc, cutting Buu in half and slicing off the end of his head tentacle. Gohan wonders how his father was able to come back to the living world. Buu recognizes Goku from their previous battle the other day. Buu says it's no use if he's come to help as he's a much better fighter than the previous Majin Buu. Goku grins and very confidently tells Buu he's wrong, because he has a new special item that will defeat him, to Gohan's shock. Suddenly, Super Buu's lower body, which landed on the ground behind Tien, stands back up and kicks him in the head, knocking him out. Buu's lower and upper body reunite, and the Majin smugly comments that while that Tien seemed like quite an expert fighter, he was still just a small fry that was taken out with a mere kick and doubts Goku can even hurt him, let alone kill him.

Suddenly, Goku yells over to Gohan and tosses the other Potara earring at him, but Gohan wasn't paying attention and misses it. The earring falls in-between some nearby rocks, much to Goku's dismay. Goku tells him to hurry and find it, then put it on his right ear so they can fuse and defeat Buu. However, Buu thinks that fusion would still be useless, but he won't allow them to merge anyway and says that he'll kill Goku first. Goku begs him to wait as Gohan searches through the rocks. Buu rushes at Goku, who becomes a Super Saiyan 3 and prepares to fight. However, Super Buu suddenly stops, just as Gohan finds the Potara. Buu begins transforming again, until he starts to resemble Piccolo. Goku laughs, thinking it's because Piccolo is now the strongest one inside Buu, since Goten and Trunks have defused. Goku powers down, disappointed that now Gohan alone can defeat Buu like this. Buu begins to smirk and says he had an insurance plan, just in case of this. Goku wonders what he means, and Buu points to his head tentacle, asking Goku why he didn't bother to regenerate it after the Saiyan cut him in half. The severed piece down on the ground then turns into a blob and suddenly envelops Gohan. Super Buu absorbs Gohan, giving him even more power than he had than when he had absorbed Gotenks.

Later, Goku and Vegeta (who had fused into Vegito to fight Super Buu) enter Super Buu's body to free their family and friends from the pink monster. They quickly find the four absorption victims contained in large pods, with only their heads visible. Goku and Vegeta cut down the pods with small energy beams, causing Buu to revert back into his previous weaker forms. After everyone is free, Super Buu turns back into his much weaker original self before he had absorbed anybody. They also discover the old Fat Buu stored inside a pod, which Vegeta tears down. The Saiyan duo then escapes from Buu's body with Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. However, this causes Super Buu to undergo a final transformation into his original and purest form – Kid Buu.

Now purely evil and insane, Kid Buu casually charges a blast large enough to destroy the Earth. Goku notices he only has seconds to escape and decides to teleport Gohan, Piccolo, Goten and Trunks to safety. As Goku puts his plan into action, he notices Mr. Satan and Dende down below. Not wanting them to die too, he grabs a hold of them, but realizes he has no time to rescue the others. As Goku prepares to teleport away, Kibito Kai suddenly teleports to Earth himself and grabs Goku's hand, teleporting the Saiyans, Dende, Mr. Satan and Bee back to the Sacred World of the Kai. Unconscious and unable to defend themselves, Gohan and the others are killed when Kid Buu destroys the Earth, but he is soon revived along with the Earth and everyone else by Porunga.

With help from King Kai, Vegeta telepathically tells everyone on Earth to raise their hands and give them their energy to defeat Kid Buu. Goku's family and friends quickly realize that Goku needs energy for his Super Spirit Bomb, and gladly contribute part of their energy to the Spirit Bomb, but the majority of Earth's population are reluctant to give up their energy. In the anime, Gohan, Piccolo, Goten and Trunks split up and attempt to encourage people to trust in Goku's words, to no avail. However, after Mr. Satan convinces the people to donate their energy, the Super Spirit Bomb is completed, and Goku finally obliterates Kid Buu.

After Goku launches his Spirit Bomb, Gohan asks Piccolo what he thinks has happened. Piccolo confirms that he can no longer sense Buu's energy, which means that he has finally been destroyed. Gohan, Goten and Trunks begin to cheer at Goku and Vegeta's victory. The four then travel to The Lookout, where they reunite with their loved ones. Shortly afterwards, Goku, Vegeta, Dende, Mr. Satan, Bee, and Good Buu are transported to The Lookout by Kibito Kai. The Son family readily embraces Goku with a hug. However, everyone is naturally frightened when they see Good Buu. Trunks prepares to launch an attack, but Goku stops him and explains that this Majin Buu is good now. Goku then apologizes to everyone for being gone for so long and says that he is alive again because Old Kai brought him back to life so he can stay on Earth permanently. Overjoyed by hearing this, Chi-Chi asks if this means that she, Goku, Gohan, and Goten can live as a family now, and when Goku says yes, she breaks down in tears and hugs Goku, who then comforts her and tells Chi-Chi that he loves her.

After six months, Goku uses the Dragon Balls to erase the memories of Majin Buu's rampage from the people of Earth, except for the Dragon Team and their family and close friends. This allows the good Majin Buu to live peacefully on Earth with his new friends.

Sometime after the Buu incident, Gohan and Videl get married and move into a house built for them by Mr. Satan.

God of Destruction Beerus Saga
Sometime after the titanic battle with Majin Buu, Gohan is first seen leaving a bookstore with Videl and wants to become a scholar. He is later seen at his home when Goten and Trunks are giving Videl a wedding gift. Sometime later, Gohan arrives at Bulma's birthday party with Chi-Chi and Videl. While he was there, he gives Piccolo a copy of their wedding picture, in which he blinks right as the photo was being taken. Gohan takes to serving Bulma a drink while she complains about his father not being in attendance to the party.

He spends some private time with Videl away from the others and is introduced to Beerus and Whis following the pair arriving to the party, joining the other attendees in clapping for Beerus and chanting his name. When Mr. Satan was blown away by Majin Buu and Beerus, Gohan and Videl try to help him recover. After Beerus is challenged by Buu, who he defeats effortlessly as well as Gotenks, Gohan decides to get involved and charges Beerus. However, he is knocked out when Beerus hits him with Buu's body.

Goku intervenes before Beerus can destroy the Earth and in the group summoning Shenron, they learn how to create a Super Saiyan God, Gohan joining the other Saiyans in holding hands in an attempt to make Goku into one. When this fails, Beerus tries to destroy Earth again, aiming directly at them prior to Videl intervening despite Gohan attempting to convince her otherwise. After Videl reveals that she is pregnant, Gohan is excited to become a father and arguing to his father that her joining them is their only hope when he ponders if the womb will be enough.

Golden Frieza Saga
Gohan is cooking for Videl, but it turns into a fiasco. Six months later, Gohan's first child has been born and is named Pan. Gohan finally became the scholar he wanted to be. One time, Gohan returned home and wanted to play with Pan as his alter ego Great Saiyaman self but Mr. Satan wanted to play too. They both began tossing Pan around until Chi-Chi interrupted and began yelling at them. Gohan along with Mr. Satan wanted Pan to be a martial artist but she did not want another warrior in the family.

Gohan notices that Goku is trying to leave and go with Whis and train, so he tells his mother to try to prevent him from going. When Goku is about to leave, Gohan shows up with Chi-Chi and Goten with him and Gohan argues that Goku needs to train and grow stronger in order to protect the Earth, but Chi-Chi didn't budge to that and was eventually relieved when Chi-Chi abruptly gave into Goku's wishes after he leaves as she knows that he will return when he gets hungry.

Gohan returns home with Videl. They have Piccolo babysit Pan when they're away. By the time of Frieza's revival, Gohan shows up and notices that Piccolo is worried. Piccolo senses power that he can't explain, then Gohan notices it too.

Four months later, when Gohan and Piccolo heard news of Frieza's return, they join Master Roshi, Krillin, and Tien Shinhan in the fight against him and his army of 1,000 soldiers. Gohan tells everyone that Goten and Trunks will not show up due to Bulma's request and they would do something reckless. When Krillin wondered if Buu was going to show up, Gohan says that he won't because he fell asleep, and it'll be hard waking him up. Master Roshi asks if Gohan has kept up with his training, he declines but says that he can probably go Super Saiyan. Gohan takes on Frieza's army along with Piccolo, Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Jaco, and Master Roshi.

Gohan challenges Shisami when he approaches. Gohan shoots a barrage of ki blasts while he gets charged at by Shisami then gets caught in a Bear Hug. Gohan isn't struggling while being in the possession of Shisami. He tells him that he has a child and that when a person like him disturbs the peace, he needs to protect them. Before Gohan could attack Shisami, Tagoma shoots a ki blast at them and kills Shisami and critically injures Gohan. Gohan's heart stops beating so Piccolo restarts it by blasting a kiai and was given a Senzu Bean by Krillin.

Tagoma is taken on by Piccolo but when he's in need, Gohan helps Piccolo by shooting a blast at Tagoma to get him away. However, Gohan's blast doesn't hurt Tagoma as his body has endured the pain and suffering from Frieza, making his body steel-like. Gotenks comes out of nowhere and charges Tagoma and hits him in his crotch. Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Tagoma and takes on the Z Fighters with his immense power. They are easily beat by Ginyu with just single punches to everyone. Gohan takes on Captain Ginyu after he switches bodies with Tagoma. Gohan is struggling to fight against Captain Ginyu because he hasn't been training to maintain his power. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and beats Ginyu in several hits but spares him.

Frieza gets furious because Gohan transformed into a Super Saiyan and sparing Ginyu, reminding him of when Goku spared him on Namek and thought it would be fun to torture him to make Goku mad. Gohan is shot numerous times through the arms, legs, stomach and chest with Death Beams, leaving him on the ground, nearly dead. As the fatal Death Beam Frieza shot at Gohan, Piccolo gets in front of the beam and takes it for Gohan, once again dying for him. Devastated, Gohan expresses regret for not training and not even having the power to protect Piccolo and his family, with Krillin comforting Gohan and assuring him that him giving up fighting to be with his family is not a bad thing. While Frieza taunts and threatens to also kill Videl and Pan, Gohan vows to stop him at all costs, causing him to power up to his fullest. At this time Bulma manages to contact Whis and inform them of what is happening so Whis gathers Beerus, Goku and Vegeta and attempt to find Earth for Goku however Goku can't sense anyone, so Whis shows him a picture of Gohan to assist.

Gohan's rage is building, and he stands back up ready to fight Frieza and begins to power up with what little energy he has left. Krillin, Master Roshi, Tien, Goten and Trunks attempt to calm Gohan down saying Goku and Vegeta will be here in a moment, but he isn't listening and powers up further. Beerus commends Gohan for being able to put out so much power not knowing he had it in him and says Goku surely has to sense him by now however he isn't, with Vegeta getting annoyed at Goku for not being able to sense Gohan yet. Gohan's rage blows and he powers up to Super Saiyan not only turning the sky black but putting out more than enough power for Goku and Vegeta to sense.

Gohan's body, however, is too injured to go on and his body breaks, dropping him out of Super Saiyan, leaving him dazed and powerless. Frieza laughs and fires a Death Beam at his head however Goku and Vegeta arrive and block the attack for Gohan and Goku catches Gohan. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being able to save Piccolo and being too weak, however Goku and Vegeta commend him for putting out so much power that they were able to sense him all the way from Beerus's planet and they are proud of him for standing up to the newly empowered Frieza for so long on his own. Goku gives Gohan to Krillin, who brings him back with a Senzu bean. Gohan retreats with Krillin, leaving the battle to Goku.

He then watches the fight between Goku and Frieza and later Vegeta who steps in after Goku is taken out. After Frieza destroys the Earth, Gohan gets protected by Whis, along with the others. Whis undoes time for Goku to be able to kill Frieza and send him back to Earth's Hell. After that, Gohan heads back home to see that Videl and Pan are okay then he embraces them and promises to protect them at all costs. He is later seen at a party, with the other Z fighters who participated in the fight and talks to Piccolo as he realized he needs to train and asks Piccolo if he could do so, and Piccolo accepts this and tells him to maintain his dull body first.

Universe 6 Saga
Sometime after the encounter with Golden Frieza, Gohan has been training with Piccolo in order to regain his lost power. During the training, Piccolo has grown considerably stronger and has become equal to or even surpassed Gohan. One day while they are training, Goku and Vegeta show up to recruit Piccolo to a team for the Tournament of Destroyers, but Gohan insists that he should take his place because he wants to show off his newfound power. However, after hearing from Goku that the tournament is in four days, Gohan is disappointed because he has to attend an important conference for Videl's benefit and thus, he cannot participate in the tournament.

Copy-Vegeta Saga
A few days after the tournament ends, Goku suffers from Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, due to recklessly using his ki against Hit. Due to not controlling his ki properly, he destroys his house so he, Goten, and Chi Chi move into Gohan's House in Satan City. Gohan and Videl are dressed formally, eating lunch with a professor and his wife, while Piccolo babysits Pan at their house. The professor was impressed with Gohan's presentation at the conference and wants to hire him as his assistant. During the lunch, however, Goku calls Gohan to tell him what happened.

Gohan and Videl later come home to greet Pan. Goku, Goten, Chi Chi, and Piccolo are there. Gohan is surprised that Pan learned a new word, calling Goku "Gramps". Gohan reveals that he turned down the job as the professor's assistant, because it would take too much time away from Videl and Pan.

"Future" Trunks Saga
In the anime, Gohan is met by Future Trunks during a conference and while having ice cream with him is sized up by Future Trunks as not having the same power that he once had. Gohan introduces Future Trunks to his family not long after, Gohan having to don his Great Saiyaman disguise to retrieve Pan once she starts flying around and finishing his work before stopping a tug-of-war over Future Trunks' sword between his daughter and old friend. Gohan, Future Trunks and Pan go outside, Gohan revealing that he wishes he could be stricter with her but cannot be due to him getting "soft" whenever he looks at her. Gohan bids Future Trunks a farewell and realizes that he forgot to ask Future Trunks why he had returned to the past to begin with.

He is later called for a meeting about the situation of Future Trunks' timeline and the true origin of Goku Black being originally the Universe 10 Supreme Kai Gowasu's apprentice Zamasu from the unaltered main timeline. Gohan is horrified to learn that Zamasu swapped bodies with Goku through the Super Dragon Balls and killed Goku, Goten and Chi Chi in that unaltered main timeline, and lastly invaded Future Trunks' timeline with the aid from Zamasu of that timeline to exterminate humanity and kill all gods around the universes. Gohan realizes this is the reason Trunks returned to the past.

After Zamasu's demise at cost of sacrificing Future Trunks' universe by Future Zeno, leaving Future Trunks, Future Mai, and Future Zeno as the only three survivors from their universe, Gohan flies to Future Trunks and Future Mai, bidding them farewell to find another world safely. Future Trunks in turn sees the Gohan of the alternate timeline reflected on the current Gohan.

In the manga, Gohan meets Future Trunks at Capsule Corp after Zamasu's defeat. Gohan reveals he was training in the Gravity Room - as no one has asked for his help recently. He tells Future Trunks he wishes to visit his peaceful timeline and Future Trunks tells Gohan he will let him visit at some point later - as he has decided to go to a new future timeline.

In the anime, Gohan partakes in the baseball game against Universe 6 in the role of catcher, shocking everyone when he catches a ball thrown by Goku while Super Saiyan Blue. Later when Gohan is up to bat, Piccolo instructs him to hit the ball to Magetta. Gohan does so but Botamo is thrown into the air to catch it, however Champa intervenes and grabs the ball himself and throws it to Yamcha and hits him in the spine however Yamcha landed on 3rd base, making him safe.

Shortly after, Gohan notices his dad acting strange and opts to follow him one day as the Great Saiyaman with Goten. During dinner, Gohan confronts Goku about it and Goku says that someone is out to kill him, and they promise not to tell Chi Chi, though Gohan tells Piccolo after he realizes something is on his mind. They both feel Goku's ki disappear and realize he has turned Super Saiyan Blue, and the situation is serious, so they head off to help. Goten tags along, and they find Goku lifeless on the ground. Goku is able to revive himself with a Ki blast and tells his son and the others to leave him to confront Hit alone.

A few weeks later, Gohan hears of a Great Saiyaman vs. Mr. Satan Movie, with the role of Great Saiyaman going to Barry Kahn, a world-famous actor. Gohan heads to the set with his family and meets Barry. After Videl turns down his advances, Barry's ego and vanity cause him to change much of the film to make it more action packed, with stunts that were impossible and fatal for ordinary people to perform. Gohan takes over as stunt double and ended up acting in the majority of the film. As Gohan kept performing these normally fatal and dangerous stunts effortlessly, he kept gaining more and more attention, with Barry becoming more jealous of him, and the film's love interest, Cocoa Amaguri, starting to fall for him.

During filming, a bank robbery takes place and Gohan, in Great Saiyaman gear, actually flies away to go and take care of it. Krillin initially confronts the robbers but is accidentally taken out by Gohan entering the bank. The robbers recognize Great Saiyaman, when a parasite that Jaco has been chasing attaches itself to one of them, causing him to bulk up and slap the other through a wall and attacks Gohan. While initially taken aback by what was happening, Gohan soon levels him with one kick and prepares to finish them off with a Kamehameha but not wanting to attract attention to himself he instead creates a new attack he names "The Great Saiyaman Beam."

After speaking briefly with Krillin, Gohan notices the parasite slide into the sewer. The news covers the story, but Barry quickly swoops in and claims it was a publicity stunt for the film and the Great Saiyaman isn't working on the film as he is a washed-up has-been hero who needs him to get him some spotlight. Gohan shares his annoyance with Mr. Satan and during the conversation, Cocoa catches Gohan unmasked. Gohan is worried about his job But Cocoa says that she doesn't care and finds it cool that he is just a normal person underneath the helmet and asks Gohan to fly her home so she can see things from his point of view.

While flying her home, Jaco, believing Gohan is infected with the parasite, fires his Super Elite Cannon at Gohan who yells at Jaco to stop. Jaco explains that he is after a parasite named Watagash who brings out the evil in people's hearts. The more hatred they have the stronger the result. After returning Cocoa home and practising some lines, Cocoa breaks down and reveals that Barry is blackmailing her to keep Gohan in her apartment all night so that the paparazzi can get photos of them together as revenge for Videl making Barry look like a fool. After finishing practising, Cocoa kisses Gohan who then nervously flies off quickly, but not before Barry gets several photos of them. Gohan heads back home and is greeted by Videl, who was under the impression that Gohan was doing a late-night filming.

Barry arrives at their house and attempts to blackmail Gohan and Videl with the photos he took. Videl, enraged at Barry, calls him pathetic and lacking in self-confidence saying that Gohan has a reason for it and trusts him. Gohan tells Barry to leave and Barry attempts to intimidate Gohan, but Gohan blasts him into a wall with a weak Kiai and demands he leaves. Outside, Barry is enraged when Watagash infects him. With his new power, Barry sneak attacks Gohan and Videl with Gohan saving her and taking the attack which knocks him out. When he awakens, he notices Pan is missing with a message written into the wall telling him to come to the TV station.

Enraged, Gohan heads off to confront Barry, who has been gaining a lot of media attention on top of the studio with Pan. Gohan charges at Barry and overwhelms him, knocking his transforming body to the ground. Barry, now unrecognizable, continues to power up due to his hatred and now larger than a skyscraper, attacks Gohan who realizes that Barry is far faster than he is, appearing to actually teleport and knocks Gohan around. Gohan attempts to keep up but is eventually caught and crushed in Barry's hands and blasted into space with a massive eye beam.

Videl and Pan call out to Gohan who is floating above the clouds injured from the blast. Hearing Pan, Gohan reminds himself he will never lose and powers up to Super Saiyan and flies back down. Not wasting time Gohan begins to charge up a Super Kamehameha while Barry charges up an even larger Eye Beam and fires it. Gohan fires his attack, calling it the "Super Great Saiyaman Beam" and effortlessly plows through Barry's attack and nearly kills him, defeating Watagash and Barry, leading to Jaco coming and recapturing Watagash.

After more posing, Gohan apologizes to Videl for making her worry. The Director works the battle into the final scene of the film which is received overwhelmingly positive by the public. Cocoa blackmails Barry, telling him that if he reveals that Gohan is the Great Saiyaman, she will reveal to the public that Barry was the monster who attacked the city. Gohan and his family then attend a screening of the film, where Goku admits he fell asleep during the film.

After this Chi Chi, Goten and Gohan head out to the fields and notice Goku plowing the fields and training. Goten reveals that dad wants a sparring partner and thought of Gohan. Gohan attempts to get out of it by mentioning Whis, Vegeta and Piccolo but they are all busy. Gohan reveals he would love to but he doesn't fight anymore but knows someone who does and turns into the Great Saiyaman and approaches Goku who calls him Gohan initially. Gohan protests and tells him he got him confused with someone else.

Gohan dares Goku to take him on and he is here to help someone in need of a sparring partner. Goku accepts and charges Gohan. Gohan, while initially stunned by Goku's speed, was able to block the shot and actually push back his father, with Goku revealing he was testing him and powers up to Super Saiyan with Gohan throwing off the Saiyaman helmet and going Super Saiyan as well. Ultimately, their match ends when Chi Chi yells at them to stop as they ended up destroying the entire field and countryside.

Universal Survival Saga
After learning that Future Zeno wants a preview of what a martial arts tournament is and only gives Goku an hour to find two more team members. Goku instantly heads to Earth at the request of Beerus, who yelled at Goku to take responsibility for the destruction of 11 other universes. Goku instantly heads to Vegeta who turns him down saying he is waiting for his child to be born and suggests his son. Goku looks at Goten and Trunks who are training together, but says they aren't ready yet. Suddenly, he figures out who Vegeta was talking about and goes to Gohan. Goku asks, but Gohan is once again hesitant and says that he still doesn't have his instincts back. Goku tells Gohan that a good fight is all Gohan will need to get his instincts back and reminds him of their fight in the fields a few days ago. Goku decides to tell Gohan what the stakes are, and Gohan is scared and asks his dad what they will do if they lose and Goku says they will deal with it. Gohan, disappointed with his father's recklessness, calms down when he sees Pan and Videl, with Videl telling Gohan to partake in the fight and to listen and respect his dad's wishes once in a while. Motivated, Gohan agrees to fight. At this time Hercule and Buu arrive with Goku convincing Buu to fight, bringing along Hercule to act as Buu's handler. Gohan having found his gi once again arrives on the Sacred World of the Kai's. Beerus was initially unamused with Gohan and Buu as the choices, but he quickly warms up to Gohan after Goku revealed that Gohan suggested they keep the destruction of the universe if they lose quiet as it would cause a panic, which Beerus thought was a great idea.

After witnessing Buu's victory, Gohan requests to go next and squares off with his foe, Lavender and is considering taking it slow so he can regain his fighting senses. Goku tells him no and to go all out at him since he can't sense him thus making Gohan's plan useless. Realizing his father is right Gohan says he will go all out from the start, saying he needs to see how strong he is so he can know where he needs to improve. Gohan and Lavender engage each other in rapid fire punches and kicks with Gohan driving him back. Gohan goes for an early knock out but Lavender attaches himself to Gohan's arm and sprays him in the face with poison blinding him, allowing Lavender to batter Gohan around. Hercule is worried about the poison, but Goku says it could be bad, but this is perfect training for Gohan as he is blinded and can't sense his opponent and tells Hercule that Gohan is at his absolute best when he is backed into a corner like this, and this is perfect for bringing back his fighting senses. Roh begins bragging that Gohan will die if he doesn't give up as his body will rot away.

Shin takes out senzu beans and says that if Universe 9 can do it so can they. Shin is about to throw Gohan a senzu bean but yells at him to stop and says he refuses it and wants to win under his own strength to Goku's approval. Gohan then begins to concentrate and tones out Lavender's voice and using his ears is able to pinpoint his attacks and is able to block them, much to Lavender's shock calling it a fluke and tries again and Gohan blocks all of them and retaliates. Lavender falls back and bombards Gohan with ki blasts only to have Gohan block and deflect all of them. Lavender flies up and attacks from afar knowing how Gohan is sensing him. Hercule and Shin are worried again, but Goku tells them to relax and while admits this may be bad reminds them that the deeper the hole Gohan is in the better for him right now as Gohan is remembering how to fight. Having been bombarded with numerous shots Gohan says his potential is far from unleashed and accesses his full potential and pushes it one step farther into Super Saiyan shocking everyone. The Zeno's are amazed at the form and call it very pretty and strong. While the God's present discuss the form, a fighter from Universe 11 says that the individuals from Universe 7 must be able to hide their true powers.

Lavender isn't impressed at the form and attacks again only for Gohan to deflect the blast and the numerous ones that follow, then Gohan suddenly charges him and attacks. Lavender assuming Gohan is able to see again begins to protest but Gohan tells him he is still blind, but his energy is telling him where he is. Goku impressed by Gohan and says not bad. Whis calls what Gohan is doing as brilliant using his energy like a radar but says it is a double-edged sword and says that his Super Saiyan form will accelerate the poison. Gohan attacks and overwhelms Lavender and throws him to the ground hard, with Lavender barely able to stand. Gohan flies in for the final blow but the poison accelerates to Gohan's heart nearly killing him and powers him back down to normal. Lavender begins to batter a dying Gohan around more and says he will enjoy killing him, Gohan not done yet stands back up and powers up once again to Super Saiyan, ignoring the risk to his life much to Shin's protests and attacks once again.

After another exchange Gohan fires a Kamehameha at Lavender's attack and begins to overpower him but the poison reaches Gohan's arms and Gohan is overwhelmed by Lavender's attack and Lavender tries to kill Gohan with another blast of his poison breathe. Gohan having had enough of Lavender's games flies straight through the poison to everyone's shock however Gohan emerges unharmed and grabs Lavender in a Full Nelson. Lavender asks how and Gohan replies he doesn't need eyesight to grab him at this range and flies straight up high into the void and turns upside down and flies back down to the arena floor as fast as he can. Lavender attempts to escape but Gohan being far physically stronger is able to restrain Lavender and piledrive him clean through the arena floor knocking Lavender out cold. A near dead Gohan rises to his feet and declares himself the winner and passes out.

The Grand Priest moves in to inspect the damage and says that since both fighters are unconscious the fight is a draw much to everyone's disappointment, saying that a great fight shouldn't end like that. The fight over Goku goes to the floor and gives Gohan a Senzu Bean and tells Gohan the news. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being stronger, but Goku tells Gohan that he is amazingly strong as he is and is proud of him and says that he is genuinely excited from watching him fight and can't wait for his fight now. Gohan seeing how excited his dad is cheers up and stands up saying he still wants to become stronger. Goku's fight is up next and before leaving the ring the Grand Priest repairs it. As Goku gets ready, Gohan wishes his father luck and Goku and Gohan fist bump.

While the battle between Goku and Top goes on, Gohan remarks that he is getting excited watching the battle between them, owing this sensation to his Saiyan blood. After the battle, Gohan resolves to think of a strategy before he begins to work with his father to form the team, with Gohan suggesting Piccolo and Master Roshi. When Goku suggests Krillin, Gohan doubts him and Goku requests they simulate the battle with image training. It was determined initially that Krillin would be slaughtered but Goku told Gohan he hasn't seen him lately and said he would be fine and told Gohan to come and see. Goku and Gohan go and get Krillin and Android 18 and they both agree but Gohan wants to test Krillin 1st under the tournament rules. Gohan was initially surprised at Krillin's increased power but begins to overpower him but falls out of the ring after Krillin uses his new technique, the x100 Solar Flare. Realizing he is still rusty, Gohan heads off to find Piccolo.

After finding Piccolo and filling him in, Piccolo agrees, and says he wants to take the time they have to retrain Gohan to use his old powers again. Piccolo reveals he has two Senzu Beans, and they will only use them when they are done and not before and demands Gohan to come at him. Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan and attacks but is easily pushed back by Piccolo who is still wearing his weights. Piccolo reveals that Goku came to him a while ago and already asked him and was concerned about Gohan in the tournament. Goku mentioned that while incredibly strong he is extremely rusty and entrusted Piccolo to get his senses back. Piccolo tells Gohan he has one major weakness and that is he has been too eager and that is hindering his power and always has. Piccolo tells him to settle down a bit. Gohan, listening, powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 once again. Piccolo and Gohan begin to battle, and Piccolo takes off his weights saying that is enough of a warm-up and quickly gains the upper hand on Gohan and entangles him in his extended arms and begins to strangle Gohan, telling him he will murder him if he doesn't get out of it.

Gohan wonders how Piccolo got so strong and Piccolo screams at him that he hasn't been sitting around while he studied as Gohan passes out into a near death state. Piccolo brings his pupil in and shoots him in the heart with a Kiai reviving him. After waking up, Piccolo tells Gohan that he hasn't given his heart into the warrior that lives inside him, and this causes him to let his guard down at vital moments. Piccolo goes on to say that his great power always goes to his head and "you get drunk on power" and become arrogant and overconfident, leading to him always being defeated. Gohan powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 and heeding Piccolo's words attacks again and does better but Piccolo screams at Gohan that Super Saiyan isn't his true power and screams at him to re-awaken "your true self."

Gohan, heeding Piccolo's words to reawaken his warrior spirit, finally reawakens his Potential Unleashed state. Piccolo, proud of Gohan, summons his clones and fights Gohan again, with Gohan saying he isn't gonna hold back. The clones attack and Gohan defeats them all with simple single blows and even takes out Piccolo in one shot by chopping his arm clean off. Gohan, shocked that he actually got the real Piccolo, hesitates and Piccolo attacks him from behind with his severed arm. Piccolo says that he dropped his guard again and tells Gohan that he gets that from his father and tells Gohan not to be like his dad and to not stop until the fight is over. Gohan agrees and they take a break, with Gohan cutting off a T-Rex's tail and cooking it for them. Piccolo tells Gohan that he believes that his current state isn't his true and full power and believes Gohan can push himself much farther and Piccolo extends his hand and tells Gohan to give him the chance to help him attain that power. He asks Gohan is he curious to how strong he can become. Gohan says yes and shakes Piccolo's hand without hesitation and suggests how about working on a few tag team attacks. Piccolo says he likes the idea and agrees.

Later Gohan and Piccolo are meditating together, and Piccolo tells Gohan that he has taught him as much as he can and together, they go to find Goku, who is eating with Master Roshi, Tien and Chiaotzu. Gohan asks for a fight with his father, which shocks all but Goku himself, who was immediately impressed by his son's power due to sensing it the moment he walked in. They move out into a mountain plateau and Roshi tells them it is a tag team battle royale just like the tournament. Tien tells Goku they should be careful so they don't hurt them, but Goku tells Tien that they will get hurt if they are not careful as Gohan charges both of them. Goku blocks the shot and is struggling to keep up with Gohan and has to escape briefly. Gohan tells Tien and Goku he isn't full power, yet which scares Tien however Piccolo reminds Gohan to cool it and Gohan reels himself back in.

Piccolo then begins to power up and Tien tells Goku that they need to stop Piccolo now and they both charge Piccolo. Gohan suddenly throws himself in front Piccolo and drops Tien with a massive body shot shocking Goku at Gohan's new ferocity then watches as Gohan powers up a bit more and attacks Goku again. Goku is able to stand his ground but is being gradually overwhelmed by Gohan's massive increase in power. Tien staggers back to his feet and prepares to shoot Gohan with the Tri-Beam but Goku tells him to ignore Gohan and hit Piccolo. Tien takes aim at Piccolo, but Gohan having heard kicks Goku away and fires a small explosive ki blast at Tien's feet to stop him and punches him straight through the mountain. Goku comes to Tien's aid and grazes Gohan as Gohan dodges Goku's attack. Tien pulls himself out of his hole and yells for Goku to look out. As Goku turns around he finds Piccolo behind him charged up and unleashed his Hyper Explosive Demon Wave on Goku. Goku attempts to block it but can't and is overwhelmed by the blast.

Gohan and Goku look to keep going but Tien tells them that is enough as the arena no longer exists. Not satisfied, Gohan wants his father to fight him one on one with an understanding Goku answering by going Super Saiyan 2. Tien and Piccolo move away as Gohan powers up to his Potential Unleashed state. Goku, shocked, asks Gohan no Super Saiyan and Gohan answers no and his goal is an ultimate form that no one has ever seen before. They begin fighting and while initially even, Gohan is pushing back Super Saiyan 2 Goku and blocking all of his attacks with no issues. Goku then has to use Instant Transmission to give himself an edge and knocks Gohan down hard and fires a kamehameha at him with Gohan returning one of his own. Goku asks Gohan to power up more and Gohan begins to do so but Goku uses Instant Transmission again to knock Gohan back. Gohan powers up more and chases Goku up into the air and begins to batter Goku around with no issues and demands Goku get serious.

After being thrown into the sky Goku has no choice and powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and engages Gohan again. Gohan charges at Goku and Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken. Hearing Piccolo cheering on Gohan from the ground Gohan smiles that he pushed his dad to his limit. Gohan and Goku move in for the final blow, with the impact being felt all across the planet and shocking the likes of Vegeta and the Kais, whom are watching the fight from Capsule Corp. When the dust clears Gohan falls unconscious. After taking some senzu beans Goku reveals he is extremely proud of Gohan and happy that Gohan is strong enough to make him get serious.

Impressed with Gohan, Goku reveals he is stepping down as Team Captain and appointing Gohan as the New Captain of Team Universe 7, much to Gohan's shock. With Gohan now in charge they reveal the news to Beerus, Whis, Supreme Kai, and Old Kai and Gohan instantly calls a meeting with all the members of Team Universe 7 to develop a strategy.

When Majin Buu falls sleep and Goku has gone to try to wake him up, most of the team meets at Capsule Corp. but Gohan decides to tell them the truth about the universe being erased if they lose when Krillin mentions prize money as a reward. Goku suggests they make Frieza as Majin Buu's replacement, much to Gohan's shock but relents because there is no one else to recruit. Vegeta and Frieza begin provoking each other and Gohan once again asks Vegeta to put aside the past so they can fight for the universe. Gohan and Piccolo decide to take command because Goku and Vegeta are not likely to rely on teamwork.

When the team is finally complete with ten members, Whis takes them to the World of Void, where they meet the warriors of the other universes. When the tournament begins Gohan goes over his battle plan with everyone which is to stand in a circle and fight as a group and using teamwork. Vegeta protests calling it boring. When the fighting begins Goku, 17, 18 Vegeta all run off instantly. Frieza walks off also but calls Gohan's plan interesting and nice but wants to get involved with the chaos. Gohan along with Beerus protest but Roshi calms Gohan down quickly telling him he shouldn't be shocked those 5 aren't following it. Gohan regains his composure and stand with Tien, Krillin, Piccolo and Roshi and fend off an attack from Universe 9 using teamwork. Gohan's plan appears to work, despite Tien, Roshi and Krillin being far weaker than the Universe 9 attackers.

After Universe 9 is erased, Gohan is just as shocked as the other fighters. They are attacked by Universe 10's Dium, but Gohan easily deflects his blast and reminds his teammates to not go all out and that as long as at least one of them lasts to the end, they will all be victorious. Dium goes for Gohan in anger at almost being hit, but Krillin and Master Roshi defeat him. Gohan witnesses Kale's rampage. After her rampage, Gohan is separated by the others, but they successfully regroup. After deciding that his plan would no longer work based on the current state of the battlefield Gohan suggests it is best to break off into groups of 2, with Tien and Master Roshi being one and Gohan and Piccolo heading off in another. While wondering Gohan is attacked by Botamo and attacks. Botamo initially mocks his attempts when Goku arrives to watch the fight and questions what Gohan is doing. Eventually Gohan's plan is quickly realized as Gohan's attacks begin to lift Botamo clean off the ground with Gohan effortlessly able to punch Botamo off to the ring side and kick him high into the air and blast him over the edge with a Kamehamaha. Goku and Piccolo both proud of Gohan as they part ways again.

Shortly after Piccolo and Gohan are attacked by Obni and Rubalt, the final survivors of Universe 10. Rubalt quickly attacks Piccolo sending him flying away leaving Gohan alone with Obuni. In his base form Gohan is able to easily match Obni. However, when Obuni begins to use his technique of displacing his ki across several copies of himself Gohan begins to struggle finding the real one. Whis points out this is a problem for Gohan as Gohan doesn't actually use his eyes to find his opponent but rather instinctively his senses instead. Having a plan Gohan powers up and dares Obuni to try that again. Obuni obliges and Gohan takes the hit, but this time doesn't budge. Piccolo appears having quickly disposed of Rubalt and watches Gohan fights back now. Gohan takes another hit and counters again. Whis points out that Gohan's plan is effective and will work but relies on Gohan being able to outlast his opponent due to taking so many powerful hits. Beerus, concerned, pleads with Gohan to not fail. Eventually Obuni's runs out of ki due to using far too many feints and Gohan begins to pummel him and overwhelm him, much to the delight of Beerus, Shin, Old Kai, and Whis. Gohan suddenly does a feint of his own blinding Obuni and jumps into the air and fires a Super Kamehameha knocking Obuni clear out of the ring. Gohan lands and finds a locket Obuni had around his neck which was of his family. Gohan becomes sad and mournful of what he has just done but Piccolo snaps him back to reality and that they need to be moving.

Sometime later, Gohan and Piccolo are approached by Universe 6's Dr. Rota. Dr. Rota wants to reveal his ability, however before he can do so, he is taken out by a powerful Ki Blast. Gohan and Piccolo hide. Piccolo throws a rock out in the open which is destroyed by the same Ki Blast that took out Dr. Rota. Piccolo says it's an attack that focuses energy in one point like the Special Beam Cannon and is shot from far away. Also, Piccolo cannot sense the attacker's energy. Gohan asks if Dr. Rota is dead, Piccolo says that if he would be dead then the attacker would have been disqualified, meaning he is still alive. Gohan and Piccolo decide to move to an area with rubble without the attacker seeing them. Afterwards, Piccolo's arm is shot off, however Piccolo regenerates, and the two decide to find the attacker. While spheres are patrolling the area, Piccolo puts his arm out in the open, and is shot, however he dodges it. Gohan saw the direction of the shot and the two decide to head there to take out the attacker.

Gohan throws a rock which Piccolo blows up with a Ki Blast, creating dust, which they use as cover. In the dust, Piccolo finds one of Prum's spheres. Piccolo wonders what the sphere does, and the two are attacked once again. Piccolo destroys the sphere, revealing that the sphere had heat. Piccolo then takes a shot that was meant for Gohan, this time, both of his arms are shot off, however Piccolo regenerates once again. Piccolo reveals that the attacker is looking for their body heat, explaining why the attacker was capable of shooting them even in the dust. Piccolo and Gohan then heat up the entire area with heat in order to trick the attacker. Prum then bombards the entire area with Ki Blasts, cutting off Gohan and Piccolo. Gohan and Piccolo hide under a rock, as Tien comes to help them, dodge all the Ki Blasts. Gohan and Piccolo witness as Tien is eliminated by Hermila. After Hermila and Prum are eliminated, Gohan and Piccolo depart together.

Later on, Gohan is separated from Piccolo and is attacked by Jimizu of Universe 2. Despite the young Saiyan's superior power, he struggles against his opponent due to his professional use of instant transmission until Frieza steps in. The warlord taunts Gohan for not going all out like his father would and tortures Jimizu before eliminating him; Gohan criticizing Frieza's needless brutality. Things take a turn when Frost arrives to reveal his alliance with Frieza. Still not trusting him, Frost asks Frieza to eliminate Gohan.

Frieza obliges and attacks Gohan, tackling him through a mountain. Frieza resumes his attack and Gohan avoids it, powering up to his Ultimate Form and pushes Frieza back with ease. Somewhat taken aback by Gohan's power Frieza, powers up to his Golden Form and re-engages Gohan. While both fighters manage to damage each other, Frieza eventually beats Gohan and knocks him out cold. After Frieza eliminates Frost, Gohan snaps right back up to his feet. Stunned at what happened, everyone looks on when Beerus realizes that Gohan knew Frieza could be trusted. Gohan reveals he was able to tell on his first blocked attack that Frieza wasn't being serious, so he just played along and trusted Frieza knew what he was doing. Frieza confirms this and says that he knew Gohan was strong enough to handle his Golden Form and if he wasn't he would have killed him. Frieza begins to leave with Gohan when Frost attacks Frieza from the stands. However, Zeno erased him on the spot, declaring if Team Universe 6 acts out again all of Universe 6 will be erased. As Champa apologizes, Frieza smiles at Gohan and suggests that they should continue to work together to ensure that their Universe wins to which Gohan smiles at Frieza.

Gohan reunites with Piccolo and witnesses his father's titanic battle against Jiren. He is the first to give Goku energy for his spirit bomb and shows increasing worry when it still seems like he is losing. Initially devastated when he though his father had been killed by his own attack, Gohan is overjoyed and flabbergasted when Goku rises and becomes stronger than ever, remarking on how his new ability is unlike anything he has ever seen.

Not long afterwards, alongside Piccolo, Gohan protected the weakened Goku from Saonel and Pilina's attack and later on, declined to assist his father against Universe 3, confident that he will bounce back like he always does. During their own battle, Gohan and Piccolo seem to be at a slight disadvantage against the Namekian duo, having to save each other on several occasions. However, as the fight goes on Gohan seems to be gaining more and more ground on them in just his base form and is able to cause major damage to Pilina after knee dropping his arm off forcing him to regenerate, and blocks Sanoel attack to Piccolo with a Masenko.

Their battle is momentarily interrupted due to the nearby fight between Goku and Kefla, which Gohan is very intrigued by. Having witnessed Goku's victory over the merged Saiyan females, Gohan again voices his endless admiration for his father and agrees with Piccolo that he requires assistance. But before they could get close, Saonel and Pilina intercept them, forcing them to resume their earlier battle. During this time, Gohan and Piccolo both sense a change in their Namekian foes. Gohan realizing that they have fused with every single Namekian in Universe 6 powers up to his Ultimate state and says that their vitality and endurance is far to high right now, so he tells Piccolo he doesn't need to worry about killing them which is why he is going full power at them and asks Piccolo to charge the Special Beam Cannon to maximum. As Gohan fights both of them Piccolo lets their spirit get the better of him and fires his attack too early as it does nothing to Pilina who responds by hitting them with a Mouth Ki Wave. In his mind Piccolo is met by Kami and Nail who point in front of him and as Piccolo awakens he finds Gohan shielding him and asks Piccolo to do it again and he won't get lazy this time as he will take them seriously now. Gohan goes back in and begins to dominate both Saonel and Pilina. Having them set up now Gohan charges a Super Kamehameha at the same time as his father, who is stuck in a black hole by Universe 2. Saonel is overwhelmed by the blast and as a last resort, Pilina fires another Mouth Wave at Gohan to save themselves. As Saonel pulls himself through Gohan's attack Gohan simply smiles at him as Saonel is pierced clean through his chest by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon and goes on through Pilina allowing Gohan to blast them out of the arena, eliminating Universe 6.

Gohan is almost knocked out of the ring by Gamisalas, but is saved by Piccolo. Inspired by Master Roshi's advice, the young Saiyan blasts the ring to create a dust cloud to expose his invisible opponent, allowing Piccolo to make swift work of him.

After rejoining with the rest of the remaining team Universe 7, they are attacked by Team Universe 3. As 17 and 18 take care of Biarra, Gohan steps in to take on the rest himself, with his plan being to preserve Goku and Vegeta's remaining stamina for Universe 11. Initially, Gohan in his Potential Unleashed state is easily able to read and beat back the Universe 3 warriors however they are ordered to fuse into Koicéareta. After fusing Gohan is still able to keep up with the three of them but has a few close calls. Gohan slips and gets into a strength test with Koicéareta. While initially struggling and being shoved through the ring Gohan is eventually able to overpower him and push him off. As he does so Goku, and Vegeta come in and knock him away. Goku apologizes for interrupting but says that thanks to Gohan's efforts his stamina has fully recovered. Vegeta tells Gohan they aren't gonna sit back and watch if they are gonna fuse into one fighter at this stage of the Tournament and together the three of them will make short work of Koicéareta and Goku and Vegeta power up to Super Saiyan Blue as Gohan powers up to maximum and they attack together.

Goku and Vegeta lead the assault pushing back initially but unable to damage Koicéareta. Paparoni mocks them for their efforts and says they lose. Vegeta smiles at him and tells him to think again as Gohan leaps out from behind Vegeta with a fully charged Ultimate Kamehameha. Beerus and the others now realize that Goku and Vegeta didn't have any desire to fight but simply provided a small distraction so Gohan can charge up one decisive attack. While initially able to block it Koicéareta is unable to resist for long and appears to be blown apart by Gohan's attack and seems to be eliminated. After powering down Goku compliments Gohan on doing a great job finishing it as Vegeta smiles at Gohan, proud of his efforts as well as Beerus even gives Gohan a show of respect by calling him by his name instead of "boy" or "kid".

However, it is revealed that Universe 3 barely hung onto the edge as Paparoni reveals their trump card, which is to fuse himself with Koicéareta. The monstrosity was initially able to beat the entire Team of Universe 7 around without much effort and after 18 sacrifices herself to save 17 the remaining fighters fire their strongest attacks but are still pushed back. 17 realizes they can't win and charges through the attack with his barrier and shatters the reactor allowing his teammates to finish off Universe 3.

During the final battle, Gohan teams with Android 17 to battle Top. The pair have difficulty facing the Pride Trooper and struggle to find rhythm as teammates. During the battle, #17 tells Gohan that they need to stop trying to coordinate the battle together, as they have never fought with one another before and therefore don't know how to anticipate the needs and movements of one another. They formulate a quick plan, in which #17 will immobilize Top and sacrifice himself, giving Gohan an opportunity to eliminate them both from the competition. The plan almost succeeds, though Top manages to free himself at the last minute. This battle is interrupted, however, when Gohan and #17 take notice of Frieza's battle with Dyspo.

When Beerus reprimands Frieza for getting too close to the edge of the ring, call out to Frieza, Gohan leaves 17 to hold off Top so that he may save Frieza. Frieza reminds Gohan of who he is and asks Gohan what he would do if he betrayed him. An unamused Gohan rebukes Frieza, stating that he will eliminate the undead emperor himself should such a betrayal occur. Frieza is not impressed but agrees to work with Gohan. With his maximum speed, Dyspo is able to dodge Gohan and Frieza's onslaught of attacks however Gohan shocks himself when he realizes he is actually capable of seeing his movements, something Frieza is not able to do. Realizing this, Gohan orders Frieza to trap himself and Dyspo in a Cage of Light so Dyspo can't move so much. Frieza, initially hesitant, relents and agrees. Gohan charges Dyspo and allows himself to be hit so Frieza can trap them. Dyspo tries to reason with Gohan. However, Gohan says he doesn't care and attacks. Dyspo attempts to move but learns he is actually too fast and hits the Cage of Light.

Dyspo engages Gohan in a head-to-head fight using his speed to attempt to hit Gohan faster however Gohan shockingly is able to keep up with Dyspo's speed and begins to take a clear advantage over him and quickly overwhelms him due to his superior strength and fighting skill. Before Gohan can land the finishing blow, Frieza loses control of his cage, and it breaks. Dyspo attempts to use his speed to eliminate Gohan but, due to being able to see his movements, Gohan catches Dyspo in a rear naked choke and orders Frieza to eliminate them both. Frieza praises Gohan's plan, saying he is indeed worthy of being called their leader, and fires a Death Cannon, eliminating both Dyspo and Gohan. After his elimination, 18 tends to Gohan and asks if he's OK. Gohan says he is fine as Piccolo and Master Roshi praise Gohan's plan of taking out Dyspo and Beerus simply smiles in approval at the young Saiyan. Goku also voices his pride in his oldest son.

Super Hero
At some point before Super Hero, Gohan began secretly practicing Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon technique.

After Videl contacts Piccolo and asks if he can pick up Pan after school, due to both her and her husband being busy, Piccolo heads directly to Gohan's home to find out what he's doing. Interrupting him while he is on his computer, Gohan greets Piccolo through an open window and explains that he's been busy writing a report on insects. Piccolo annoyingly asks if the work is more important than picking up his child, but Gohan is more than happy enough for Piccolo to help out.

Piccolo asks why he isn't training more often as a new crisis could arise at any moment. Gohan dismisses the comment, realizing that his father and Vegeta would be enough if such a thing happened again. Piccolo suddenly attacks Gohan as a test and though Gohan blocks the first shot, he lets his guard down for the second. Piccolo materializes his clothes on Gohan who struggles with the weight. As Piccolo leaves, Gohan thanks him and offers to buy him another stuffed animal which annoys him greatly. Gohan then gets back to work.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Red Ribbon Army, unable to locate Goku or Vegeta decide to target Gohan. They plan to kidnap his daughter in order to lure him to their base for the Gammas to defeat. Piccolo overhearing this, joins in on her kidnapping and has her put on an act of distress purely so that Gohan can reclaim his fighting instincts.

Piccolo disguised as a Red Ribbon soldier, along with another soldier, head to Gohan's home. The soldier threatens Gohan to go along with him though he is not the least bit bothered, even when held at gunpoint. However, when shown video footage of Pan, Gohan flies into a fit of rage, transforming into a Super Saiyan which creates a crater that causes his home to sink as he demands to know where his daughter his.

Gohan arrives at the base and spotting Pan in the tower behind her, flies straight towards her. He is intercepted by Gamma 2 and Dr. Hedo orders Gamma 1 to take him on. The two battle and Gohan struggles to even land a blow. Transforming into a Super Saiyan, he has more success though it ultimately proves to not be enough against the powerful android. Knowing Gohan needs an extra push, the still disguised Piccolo holds up Pan and has her scream out in distress. The sight infuriates Gohan who steps up into the Potential Unleashed state and continues battling Gamma 1, now able to gain the upper hand. The battles come to an end after Carmine shoots at Pan and the Gammas realize they are on the wrong side.

Unfortunately, Magenta in his dying moments unleashes Cell Max, and Gohan accidentally loses a Senzu Bean when Piccolo tosses him one and it falls in a crevice due to Gohan's poor eyesight, leaving Gohan unable to recover from his fight with Gamma 1. Still eager to participate, Gohan uses Super Saiyan to join his allies in battle, but Cell Max proves to be too powerful, even with help from his friends and the Gammas at his side. Despite Piccolo transforming into his new Orange form, he admits he cannot defeat Cell Max and hands Gohan his last senzu bean believing that only he can beat him. Gohan transforms into his Potential Unleashed state again as Piccolo tells him as long as he were to put his mind to it, he could be the strongest person in the world. Piccolo and Gohan fight Cell Max again but are still no match for him.

Once more deciding that Gohan is the only one who can finish the job, Piccolo says that he will buy time for him while he powers up as much as possible to land the finishing blow and goes after Cell Max alone. Gohan begins to power up and watches as Piccolo is badly beaten by the monster. After witnessing Piccolo take what seems to be a fatal blow, Gohan snaps as he did once before long ago and undergoes an unprecedented awakening. After easily catching a punch from Cell Max, Gohan Beast kicks him into a cliffside. Angry, Cell Max begins to power up a devastating blast while Gohan prepares to respond with his newly trained Special Beam Cannon. Orange Piccolo rejoins the fight to keep Cell Max tethered in Gohan's view, allowing Gohan to fire the Special Beam Cannon straight through Cell Max's head, defeating him and causing him to explode.

With the final battle over, Gohan embraces his daughter. Realizing Gohan's use of the Special Beam Cannon, Piccolo asks him when he learned the technique with Gohan telling him he'd been practicing it in secret. Piccolo calls it a marvelous display. Pan begins to show off her new flying technique as Gohan watches on.

Peaceful World Saga
Ten years after Kid Buu's defeat, Gohan has finally become a scholar, married Videl and had a daughter named Pan. At the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku participates and fights Uub, the reincarnation of Kid Buu. After an equal battle, Goku takes in Uub as his student to train him and better control his power. Goku bids farewell to Gohan and the others before Goku and Uub fly away to Uub's village.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (Gohan can generate Ki for attacks. All beings in Dragon Ball have ki , the very life force energy of all characters, ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard, higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them. A users ki aura can exert itself as a weapon to attack), Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan, Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb, Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice, Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta, Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza, and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them), Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever), Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training), Power Absorption & Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others), Aura (He can surround himself in an aura of Ki. Has an aura of ki surrounding him whenever he exerts ki), Vibration Manipulation (Powerful ki users can cause the very ground itself to shake when they power up), Intimidation, Spirit Manipulation & Pain Manipulation ( Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce, along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed, exerting fear into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power), Energy Manipulation (Ki is the latent power in one's body, this latent power allows them to form and create energy from controlling their ki, which can be used to shoot out energy blast), Explosion Manipulation (Ki attacks can create massive explosions, control the ki to set off a huge explosion under the enemy, or in front of them), Heat Manipulation (Ki user's ki attacks produce heat allowing them to cook and grill animals and raw meat[8][9], along with leaving behind steam after the attacks hit an area, showing its latent heat), Nullification (Attack Nullification; Those with ki can nullify attacks of lesser ki with their ki alone. They can also catch and nullify ki attacks around their level through focusing enough[10]. Power Nullification; Through having greater ki, one can nullify the powers done through ki attacks, such as Frieza being able to nullify a hakai ball[11], which fully destroys a target[12], though he is unable to resist a hakai ball from Toppo due to him being stronger[13], this ability however only works on ki, attacks unrelated, characters cannot resist through being stronger, such as how Vegeta, Krillin, & Son Gohan are unable to resist Guldo's psychic powers, along with even the likes of Son Goku), Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves. These forcefields can be expanded, and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user), Super Armor (Through releasing one's ki, they enter a state known as "Hyper Mode", in this state they do not flinch from weak melee attacks), Self-Destruction (Ki users in Dragon Ball are able to release all of the energy within them to cause a massive self-destruction of energy that normally kills the user and turns them into dust though one can control it to surviving but having no stamina or energy left), Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light, Degisu seeing ki attacks be fired notes that the characters are "firing light from their hands"[14]), Binding (Energy Binding; Ki Users can use their ki to bind targets to objects, making them unable to escape even if they're of equal power[15], however, those stronger then the ki user can easily break out of it), Dreaming Existence (Characters in Shin Budokai have shown to create physical bodies in alternate timelines through dreaming), Non-Standard Interaction (Intangible Interaction; Those with ki can block intangible attacks when they focus and notices them[16]. Space-Time Interaction; Characters can blast space-time distortions to close them), Healing (Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso, it can also heal from near death), Fusionism (Gohan can perform the Fusion Dance).

Limited Resistance to Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides), Resistance to Poison Manipulation (Can resist poisons through Forcefield Creation[17]), Poison Manipulation (Can resist poisons through Forcefield Creation[18])

Longevity (Saiyans can keep their youth until around 80 years old), Reactive Power Level (As a Saiyan, his power level will increase after a tough battle. A saiyan’s power increases if they survive from injuries in battle, with their powers allowing them to greatly exceed their previous levels beforehand), Rage Power (Grows incredibly powerful when he's angry. Mere rage can amplify a saiyan to a level that's believed to be a myth even by the highest levels of saiyans in the verse), Damage Boost (Saiyans attack power rises when health is low), Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; Gohan can transform into a great ape upon seeing the moon).

Resistance to Radiation Manipulation (Saiyans are able to absorb up to 17 million zeno units per second of green-spectrum radiation in order to trigger the Great Ape transformation)

Genius Intelligence, Martial Arts (Son Gohan was trained by martial artists such as Son Goku and Piccolo), Acrobatics, Enhanced Senses, Extrasensory Perception, Flight, Accelerated Development (Training; Physical Stats, Skill, & Abilities. Gohan as well as others can train and quickly grow stronger, surpassing even the earthlings, being already far stronger then his father as a kid just from training for two years with Piccolo), Precognition (Premonitions; Son Gohan has had dark premonition dreams of his loved one's being killed, these dreams have him able to view beings like Perfect Cell who he hasn't seen before[19], and warn him of Frieza coming to Earth[20]), Energy Projection (With attacks such as masenko, can shoot out energy projectiles)

All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent, Enhanced Transformation (Can transform into a Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan 2), Statistics Amplification (With the Super Saiyan transformation, capable of increasing his power level by a multiplier of 50. With the Super Saiyan 2 transformation, capable of increasing his power level by a multiplier of 100{x2 the x50 multiplier of Super Saiyan 1}).

Resistance to Extreme Heats, Extreme Colds, & Air Manipulation (Survived the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a year, which contains sub-zero temperatures to over one hundred degrees temperatures, along with the chamber having 1/4th the air of the regular world and ten times gravity), Mind Manipulation (The original Super Saiyan was consumed by its own rage and power losing any sense of itself it had, Gohan is capable of maintaining Super Saiyan for as long as he wants)

Next, he flies up and appears above the opponent to backhand punch them down to the ground, forcing the opponent to land on their hands and knees to recover from the bone-crushing blows.
  • I'm Here to Kill You: As he says either "I'll make you pay" or "I'm here to kill you", Gohan kicks his opponent in the stomach. Next, he does a 360 spin, kicking the opponent in the neck. Last, Gohan moves behind the opponent and knocks him down to the ground with a left hook, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
  • Great Ape: This transformation occurs when a person with Saiyan heritage (and with a tail) absorbs enough blutz waves through the eyes, usually from looking at a full moon. This stimulates a gland in the tail, enabling a seemingly unavoidable transformation. In this form, Gohan's capacities increase 10 fold. Because Gohan never had any proper training, Gohan loses all form of mental control, becoming a primal beast. However, during his fight against Vegeta, Goku's words were able to reach Gohan enough to regain some of his rational thought and focus on his real enemy. Gohan only transforms into this state three times throughout the series as ultimately, his tail was permanently removed. Gohan is the only known Saiyan/Human hybrid to ever achieve this transformation, due to having been born with a Saiyan tail.
  • Super Saiyan: Gohan became a Super Saiyan at nine years of age (ten if including the months spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), during the intense training he endured with his father to help him ascend. At the time, Gohan was the youngest to appear as a Super Saiyan until the appearance of his brother, Son Goten, who accesses the state effortlessly at seven years old. In this state, his capacities are increased 50 fold. In this state, his musculature grows more defined, while his eyes become sterner and green, and his hair turns blond while standing up more with no loose strands. His energy is manifested as a golden aura. After Gohan had his potential unlocked by Old Kai, Gohan would rarely use this or any higher form, due his base state's power already being well-beyond the previous limits that Super Saiyan alone would provide. However, doing so still increases his power as proportionally as previously. After Gohan’s earnest studies led him to need glasses, his diminished eyesight is restored in his Super Saiyan forms.
  • Super Saiyan Full Power: Gohan is one of the first to gain full mastery over Super Saiyan. After Goku noted the inherit weakness of transforming, a reduction in stamina and ki, Gohan learned to perfect this form with his father. By working to remain transformed for extended periods of time, Gohan and his father gradually learned to overcome the transformation's drawback to feel as natural in this form as their base state. This mastery of Super Saiyan enables full control over the energy output and consumption, completely diminishing strain on the body, even while constantly maintaining maximum power for. It also has caused no affect to Gohan's emotional nature and subsequently gives of a pure energy that attracts wildlife.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Gohan was the first and the youngest to reach Super Saiyan 2, achieving it at the age of 9 (technically 10). This occurred when a larger portion of his dormant power was awakened in rage from Perfect Cell killing the peaceful Android 16. While in this form, Gohan's muscle mass increases slightly and hair stands straight up and spikier with the exception of one lock that hangs down. Also, his aura is surrounded by repeated flashes of blue electricity. Originally, so new with this massive boost of power, it warped Gohan's attitude, giving him an almost sadistic sense of mind as he wanted to make Cell suffer for his evil actions, whereas before Gohan was a pacifist to a fault who didn't want to hurt the villainous Cell.
  • Unlock Potential: Unlock Potential is a state of self-enhancement to focus the full extent of their current capacities. Gohan acquired it from Guru while on Planet Namek, who noted that Gohan's capacities were by far the greatest he had ever seen. Gohan's abilities were all greatly enhanced, and as a side effect, continuously grew at noticeably faster rates with each battle, as noted by Vegeta. This awakening made Gohan's power increase multiple fold, making him equal to Vegeta's strength when the latter appeared on Earth. This, however, only appeared to release his initial potential as only through moments of extreme emotion could he manifest all of his power.
    • Potential Unleashed (Ultimate Gohan): Much later Old Kai uses his unlock ability to bring out the full extent of Gohan's dormant power. This powered up Gohan is still able to use Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 on top of it, and also became capable of taking on a form called Potential Unleashed which released his power to beyond it's limits. On one occasion, Gohan was referred to as "Ultimate Gohan" while in this state even without being in his Potential Unleashed form. In addition to Old Kai's Unlock Ability granting Gohan full access to all his developed capacities, Gohan is capable of pushing his power well-past those levels via his Potential Unleashed state. This power-up is when the full extent of his dormant capacities are released. This state looks identical to his base state, but with the addition of a lock of hair hanging down over his forehead in the anime. Once accessing his Unlocked power, Gohan's subtle differences are present to his appearances, including more pronounced facial features including sterner eyes, and is able to manifest a large white aura.
    • Gohan Beast: Gohan Beast is an evolution of the Potential Unleashed state unique to Gohan awakened through rage as a result of witnessing his teacher Piccolo's apparent death at Cell Max's hand. In this form, Gohan's eyebrows turn white, while his hair turns light gray and lengthens to resemble his old Super Saiyan 2 hairstyle as a boy. His eyes become fully red with black pupils. Gohan's power is such that he effortlessly withstood a full power punch from Cell Max and defeat him with ease.

Other

Standard Tactics: Gohan exhibits a more passive style to fighting, usually trying to ask the other side to not fight but he will fight to defend himself and his friends, in which he uses hand to hand combat along with energy blasts.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[22].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.
