From The Codex

Background

The Gungeoneers are the characters who explore The Gungeon. Choose between one of several unlikely heroes, each burdened by a deep regret and in search of a way to change their past, no matter the cost. Filled with equal parts courage and desperation, these adventurers won’t hesitate to dive across flaming walls, roll through a wall of bullets, or take cover behind whatever is around to make it to their goal alive!

This dropdown contains the synopsis of The Gungeoneer's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!⠀

The Marine was a guard stationed at Primerdyne R&D when an experiment went awry, unleashing an Interdimensional Horror into the facility. His gun having jammed, the Marine chose to flee in an escape pod, abandoning the scientists and his fellow guardsmen onboard the station to their doom.

The Bullet is brought back to the Gungeon Proper in an unspecified time in the past. The Bullet retrieves Blasphemy from a dying elder bullet. The Bullet travels forward in the Gungeon and faces two Chain Gunners, followed by Agunim and finally Cannon. After successfully defeating the two and thrusting the wooden Blasphemy into Cannon's head, the true Blasphemy is created in a burst of fire and light. Following this is a final scene where the Bullet is seen resting on a wood stump in some meadow-like area while various Gungeon enemies are seen cheerfully playing about.

The Pilot was some sort of space smuggler who was found holding cargo owned by the Imperial Hegemony of Man. When confronted by the HM Absolution, he was ordered to power down all systems other than life support. Rather than surrendering, he jumped away, leaving his friend Z to be captured. Feeling bad about this, he enters the Gungeon, hoping to go back in time to save Z.

1,147 years prior to The Hunter's adventure into the Gungeon, she traveled to Blacksword Manor to defeat Dr. Wolfenclaw; however, she was captured and stored in a Cryo Pod until the events of Enter The Gungeon. It is unknown how she escaped the Cryo Pod.

The Cultist enters the Gungeon, their reason for being there is probably to make their sibling take the blame for spilling grape juice on the couch, as stated in the Ammonomicon entry for the Dart Gun. However, their motives change over the course of what happens in the Gungeon as they are treated poorly by the NPCs. Eventually, they come to the conclusion that what they want is to defeat player one and become the protagonist.

The Robot was an honored member of the killbot army. When commanded by its master, EMP-R0R to kill the leader of the human resistance, it broke protocol, failing to eliminate humanity.

The Gunslinger is conscious of the Gungeon's situation and knows what happened there after he mastered it. He realizes his goal is to revert all of this, by killing his future self, the Lich, stopping him from becoming Gungeon Master and stopping the Great Bullet from falling, which would prevent the creation of the Gungeon.

The Paradox is a Gungeoneer added in the A Farewell to Arms Update. It costs 5 Hegemony Credit.png to play, and has no past. The Paradox starts with a random starting sidearm from the other gungeoneers (excluding the Slinger), as well as another random gun and a random passive item.

The Resourceful Rat is an antagonist and occasional ally encountered throughout the Gungeon. He is a bipedal rat characterized primarily around his kleptomania and tendency to annoy and bring misfortune to Gungeoneers, though it is implied that he shares the same distaste towards the Gungeon.

He was born in the hold of a tradesman's ship, having to steal food from the captain's personal stores to feed his brothers and sisters to the point of obsession. However, this wasn't enough and only prolonged their suffering, in which they eventually turned on each other. Once the ship docked, he was the last of his brethren, so he saught a gun that can kill the past. Having built a kingdom in the Gungeon, the Resourceful Rat stole loot for the spite of Gungeoneers, becoming the biggest annoyance the Gungeon has ever faced.

Note 1: This profile composites all characters due to the differences between them being slight, making separate profiles just a copy and paste of each other.

Note 2: Due to being a roguelike bullet hell with randomly generated equipment, all weapons are assumed to be here.
