~ Gilles de Rais |
Background
Gilles de Rais is an antagonist featured in Castlevania (N64) and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. A powerful vampire and one of Count Dracula's most trusted subordinates, Gilles serves as a high-ranking figure in a carefully orchestrated scheme to resurrect the Dark Lord.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Gilles de Rais’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Gilles de Rais makes his first appearance in the opening sequence of Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, where he is seen traversing the castle halls, lantern in hand. He ascends to the Castle Keep, joining Actrise and Death as they perform the ritual to resurrect Dracula in 1844. He is later referenced during the Villa stage, where Mary Oldrey reveals that her husband, J. A. Oldrey, fell victim to Gilles and was turned into a vampire. Gilles himself confronts Cornell in the crypt beneath the Villa's garden maze, initiating a battle. However, he is caught off guard by Cornell's strength and retreats when Actrise intervenes, halting the confrontation. Before leaving, both Gilles and Actrise ominously hint that Cornell may prove to be a worthy opponent for Dracula. Gilles reappears in the final scene of Cornell’s story, where Cornell’s werewolf essence is used in a ritual to reincarnate Dracula within the body of Malus. Gilles de Rais returns in the events of Reinhardt and Carrie's quests in 1852, this time under the guise of Dracula. While the English versions of the games do not clearly reveal his identity, the official strategy guide confirms that he is "Vampire Gildre," one of Dracula's servants. Disguised as his master, Gilles attempts to thwart the adventurers in the Castle Wall. His deception ends when he is confronted and ultimately defeated during the climactic battle in the Castle Keep. |

Powers and Techniques
Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[25], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[26]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[27]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[28]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[29]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[30]. With their souls being completely free from time[31]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[32]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[33]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[34], becoming stronger when it's night time[35]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[36] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[37]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[38]. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[45]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[46], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[47]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[48]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[49]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[50], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[51], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[52], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[53]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[54]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[55], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[56]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[57]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[58]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[78]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Vampires will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[79]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[80]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[121]).
Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can fight and act all the way into Draucla's throne room without any adverse effects done to him[147])
The Castle Abilities Include:
Equipment
Nothing notable.
Notable Techniques
- Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[187] regenerate[188], from any kind[189] of damage due to it absorbing blood[190].
- Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
- Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
- Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.
- Claw Slash: De Rais slashes Cornell with his claws. The attack is stronger at night and weaker during the day.
- Vampiric Bite: De Rais bites Cornell to drain his health and replenish his own. If Cornell does not break free in time, his status changes to "vampire."
- Flame Bursts: De Rais emits multiple bursts of flame as long-range attacks.
- Evasion: De Rais is adept at evading attacks, either leaping into the air or sidestepping to avoid damage. If close enough, he will attempt to bite Cornell after evading.
- Teleportation: De Rais turns into mist and vanishes, teleporting multiple times before reappearing behind the hero. If the player is too close or turns abruptly, he may vanish again.
- Homing Fireballs/Flaming Bats: De Rais conjures four homing fireballs (in Legacy of Darkness) or four flaming bats (in Castlevania (N64)).
- Vampiric Drain: De Rais draws the hero to him and sucks their blood, draining the player’s health and replenishing his own. If the player does not break free in time, their status changes to "vampire."
- Shockwaves: De Rais emits two shockwaves, one low to the ground and the other at waist height.
- Sustained Fire Blast: De Rais releases a sustained blast of fire, resembling a weaker version of Dracula’s Demonic Megiddo.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Villa's Crypt:
- Slashing with claws, with increased strength at night and reduced power during the day.
- Biting to drain ones health while restoring his own. Prolonged biting can result in the opponent becoming a vampire.
- Emitting bursts of flame for long-range attacks.
- Gilles primarily fights at close range, using flame bursts when distant. He is highly evasive, leaping or sidestepping attacks and often attempting to bite if close.
- Castle Keep:
- After a cutscene, de Rais transforms into mist and teleports, often reappearing behind the hero. He may vanish again if the player gets too close or turns suddenly.
- Conjuring four homing fireballs (in Legacy of Darkness) or four flaming bats (in Castlevania).
- Drawing the opponent close and sucking their blood, draining their health while replenishing his own. If not broken free from in time, the player becomes a vampire.
- Emitting two shockwaves, one low to the ground and the other at waist height.
- Releasing a sustained blast of fire (similar to a weaker version of Dracula's Demonic Megiddo).
- Like Dracula battles in previous games, de Rais only takes damage when struck on the head. On higher difficulty settings, the player must jump to hit him, or all attacks will miss.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[191]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[192], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[193]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[194].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[195]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[196]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[197]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[198]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[199]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[200]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[201]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[202].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[203]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[204], a knight who has natural holy powers[205]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[206].
- While vampires have some weakness to sunlight and can burn overtime in them[207], higher tier vampires[208], can stand out in the sunlight just fine[209] without being weakened. It should also be noted even with Dhamphir's like Alucard, in original lore, he was considered a full vampire yet could stand out in the sunlight perfectly fine.
Trivia
- This character is based on the real Gilles de Rais, a knight and lord from Brittany, Anjou and Poitou, a leader in the French army, and a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc. Although he was not associated with vampire legends, he was convicted and executed as a confessed serial killer of hundreds of children, a crime ascribed to his in-game accomplice, Actrise.
- He was also accused of being a sorcerer by the Catholic Church (he apparently did attempt to summon a demon with the help of a coerced priest), and a werewolf in other stories.
- The real Gilles de Rais is associated with the legend of Bluebeard, a French folktale of a wealthy man in the habit of murdering his wives, and as such his in-game rendering sports a blue beard.
- The PAL version of Castlevania (N64) features voice acting for Gilles de Rais in the Castle Wall and Castle Keep stages. However, in the American version, he only has voice acting in the Castle Wall.
- This could have been due to the PAL version having been released about four months after the US version, allowing the developers to add extra features to it. However, this is unconfirmed.
- Gilles' voice actor is uncredited in Castlevania (N64), although it is believed he was voiced by Scott McCulloch, who also voiced the Narrator in that game.
- In Castlevania (N64) and Legacy of Darkness, it turns out that Gilles de Rais himself decided to become a host for Dracula so he could release his master's soul after he died and reincarnate it into Malus's body.
- Largely because of Castlevania (N64) misleading the player into thinking Gilles de Rais is Dracula unless specific requirements are met for the true ending, Gilles de Rais is the only Dracula-like enemy to utilize Dracula's leitmotif "Dance of Illusions".
- A version of Gilles de Rais was planned to appear in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but was scrapped during development[210].
- The 2003 horror film, Dracula II: Ascension, part of a trilogy which identified Dracula as the disciple Judas Iscariot, had Dracula stating a list of the names he had gone by through the centuries, one of which being Gilles de Rais.

- ↑ WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?
KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea. - ↑ Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Prologue Stage 4

Even though it is still far away, their bodies seemed to squeal [run away].
There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children." - ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "“Uh……aa……Mi……chelle……”
That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
“Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
However-----
Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul." - ↑ Castlevania: Curse of Darkness Bestiary No. 115
