No one will listen to reason from the mouth of a beast.
~ Cornell, before a fight

Background

Cornell, also called the "Blue Crescent Moon", serves as the main protagonist and playable character in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. He also appears as a playable fighter in Castlevania Judgment for the Wii.

Typically, Cornell has a lean, delicate appearance, marked by his pale complexion and platinum-colored hair. However, beneath this exterior lies a formidable power: the ability to transform into a wolf-like humanoid. This transformation greatly enhances his strength and speed, making him a more formidable combatant than in his human form. Cornell wields energy blades that he can launch from his fists in either form and can unleash devastating claw attacks against his foes.

The story begins with the abduction of Cornell's sister, Ada, who is taken by demons intending to offer her as a sacrifice to honor Count Dracula. Unbeknownst to Cornell, the demons have far more sinister plans in store.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Cornell’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Before Castlevania Judgment
In ancient times, a tribe of warriors fell victim to a curse, which transformed all of its members into man-beasts. These ancient man-beasts were gifted with immense power, but, preferring to coexist peacefully with humans, they chose to seal away this dangerous power. However, despite their efforts to seal away a portion of their energy, they were unable to control the transformations or lift the Curse of the Man Beast that had been placed upon them.

Cornell was born into this cursed tribe in 1821. Growing up alongside his best friend and rival, Ortega, he trained in martial arts, becoming a skilled soldier for his village. However, Ortega often found himself frustrated, as no matter how hard he tried, Cornell always excelled beyond him.

One fateful day, Cornell's tribe, possibly under the influence of the curse, attacked a human village, with the villagers being slaughtered by the man-beasts. The only survivor was a young girl named Ada. Grieving over the tragic event and feeling immense guilt, Cornell adopted Ada as his sister, raising her in the harsh environment where man-beasts could transform at any moment. To protect her, Cornell gave Ada a pendant that shielded her from the man-beasts’ curse, allowing her to survive in such a perilous world.

Driven by his desire to protect Ada, Cornell sought a way to break free from the curse. Through intense and rigorous training, he became the only man-beast to master his transformation, gaining control over his power. In doing so, he also became the sole person capable of breaking the seal placed upon the Man Beast power by the ancients, earning him the title of "Blue Crescent Moon." His newfound strength, however, did not go unnoticed, and soon Dracula’s forces began attempting to recruit him to serve the Dark Lord. Time after time, Cornell was forced to defeat Dracula's agents in order to protect himself and his mission.

Ortega, who had grown increasingly envious of Cornell's strength, challenged him to a duel. Cornell, seeing Ortega as a weaker opponent, met the challenge with indifference and easily defeated his former friend. After the battle, Cornell left his village and Ada behind on a journey to continue his training in hopes of finding a cure for the curse. During this time, Dracula’s minions had found a way to exploit Ortega, promising him that if he served Dracula, the Dark Lord would lift the seal on Ortega’s own powers, allowing him to rival Cornell’s strength.

Events of Castlevania Judgment
During his intense training, Cornell's powers became uncontrollable, causing him to remain trapped in his beast form. He eventually regained consciousness within a time rift, where a man named Aeon explained that the source of his curse and its potential cure could be found in this strange place. To uncover the answer, Cornell would need to battle various warriors from different time periods.

As Cornell continued his journey, he crossed paths with Sypha Belnades, a member of the clergy, and sought her assistance in curing his curse. However, Sypha believed his affliction to be beyond healing and attempted to end his misery by killing him. Despite her efforts, Cornell managed to defeat Sypha and pressed forward in his search, growing more disheartened by the lack of answers.

During his travels in the time rift, Carmilla and Death also arrived, each with their own dark plans. They schemed to take Cornell's Man-Beast power and transfer it to Dracula to make him stronger. When Cornell confronted Carmilla, she taunted him before attacking. After successfully defeating her, Cornell turned his attention to Death, who claimed that his sinister arts could provide a cure for the curse. Although Cornell felt relief at the thought of a cure, he did not trust Death's intentions and chose to continue his quest on his own terms.

Events of Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
After returning from the time rift, Cornell regained control over his transformations, but he still felt no closer to finding a cure for his curse. Upon returning to his village, he discovered it had been destroyed by demons, and Ada had been kidnapped. Following her trail, Cornell ventured to Dracula's Castle, where he encountered numerous challenges, including Ortega, who had betrayed their village and handed Ada over to Dracula for a sacrificial ritual.

During his journey, Cornell saved a young boy named Henry, whose father had been transformed into a vampire. He entrusted Henry with Ada's pendant for protection. Along the way, Cornell confronted and defeated several of Dracula's powerful servants, including Gilles de Rais and Actrise, who tried to test Cornell's strength for Dracula's purposes.

Cornell's journey ultimately led him to a climactic battle with Ortega, who had been altered into a monstrous chimera with Dracula's dark influence. After defeating his former friend, Cornell learned of Ada's location and pursued her. Along the way, he confronted Death, who had captured Ada in a crystal and delivered her to Dracula.

In Dracula's lair, Cornell faced the Dark Lord in two separate forms. Dracula revealed a shocking truth: Ada was not actually Cornell's sister by blood, a revelation meant to unsettle him. Despite the emotional turmoil caused by this information, Cornell overcame his inner conflict and managed to destroy the crystal imprisoning Ada. However, his beast form detached itself from him and entered the crystal, destroying it in the process, allowing Dracula to claim the Man-Beast power for himself. Free from the curse, Cornell chose to begin a new life with Ada and Henry, leaving the darkness behind.

After Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Cornell settled into a peaceful life with Ada and Henry, who had become a knight equipped with a gun. Despite their attempts to live without conflict, the powers of darkness utilized the sacrificed Man-Beast energy to aid in Dracula's resurrection.

Eight years later, Dracula's forces abducted seven children, seeking to use them to locate the Dark Lord's new incarnation. While Henry set off on a mission to rescue the children, new heroes, Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez, emerged, determined to confront and defeat Dracula once again.

Personality

  • Atonement: Out of pure guilt for what the man-beast tribe did to the human tribe, Cornell atones by watching over his little sister Ada, despite her not even being related to him by blood. He feels very guilty to the point that he wishes to tell Ada the truth by the end of the game but she reveals she already knew they weren't blood-related.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[34], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[35]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[36]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something being their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[37]. With their souls being completely free from time[40]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something being their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[41]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[42]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[43], becoming stronger when it's night time[44]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[45] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[46]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[47]. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[54]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[55]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to greatly strengthen their dark powers[56]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[57]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[58], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[59], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[60], where if the books contents change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[61]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[62]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[63]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[64]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger then them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[65]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[66]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[67]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[68]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[69], with their souls being completely free from time[70]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[71], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[72]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss level creatures[73]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[74], with their souls being completely free from time[75], with fate being a truth wound by time[76])

Axe Mastery; With Axe, throws at an arc trajectory to knock down enemies[82]. Boomerang Mastery; With Cross, throws a holy cross in a whirlpool orbit to knock down enemies[83]), Natural Weaponry & Penetration Damage (Metaphysical Penetration; Cornell uses magical slashing attacks with his claws), Sheer Will (Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeated Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmonts strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[84]), Enhanced Senses (Cornell used the man-wolf's acute sense of smell to track the scent of his sister's blood[85]. Cornell is able to smell that Ada is in an area[86]. Cornell is able to tell a human child from smell[87]), Energy Absorption (Cornell can get jewels out of objects and enemies, with jewels being a means to charge energy and thus they are essentially hearts, where hearts are a measure of one's stored energy, thus one is absorbing energy when gaining hearts[88]), Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; Through severe ascetic training, Cornell acquired the art for releasing the sealed man-wolf power[89], being capable of transforming into a werewolf at will[90]), Non-Standard Interaction (Elemental Interaction; Can interact with and kill beings made of water[91]), Statistics Boost (While in Werewolf state, Cornell's attack and defense power are both greatly increased[92]), Sealing (The man-beasts, choosing to live harmoniously with humans, sealed away their enormous magical powers to prevent them from being used[93]), Severing (Severed his man-beast half from his human half in order to save Ada[94]), Magic & Principle Manipulation (Cornell's werewolf form is through the magic of the ancients[95], where magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[96]), Electricity Manipulation (Can shoot out a magic projectile to attack enemies with, that electrocutes enemies with each hit[97]).

The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[113]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[114]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[115], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[116]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[117]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[118]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[119]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[120]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[121]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[122]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[123]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[124]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[125] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[126]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[127]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[128]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[129]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[130])

Notable Techniques

Werewolf Transformation

Cornell hails from a clan of warriors cursed to become werebeasts. He himself transformed into a wolf, gaining the abilities and strengths of one, but also the uncontrollable rage. His clan sealed their raw power to live peacefully with humans, though sometimes their power leaked, causing violent outbursts. After the massacre of Ada’s village, Cornell vowed to control his powers for her sake. His intense and grueling training eventually allowed him to control both his transformation and his violent tendencies. He broke the seal and earned the title of "Blue Crescent Moon" from his people. His transformation is unique, as he doesn't require the full moon and can even shift in broad daylight, though it strains his spirit.

In Judgment, the time rift forces him into werewolf form. In Legacy of Darkness, this mode boosts his attack damage by 3x, increases his attack range by 1.2x, reduces damage taken by half, and grants immunity to negative status effects. However, it depletes Red Jewels over time until they are exhausted, and the form cannot be manually canceled.

Werewolf Claws

Cornell's claws slash with great force, even in human form. Enhanced by the werewolf's powers and combined with his martial arts skills, his attacks become nearly unbeatable.

Werewolf Howl

In his werewolf form, Cornell can use his howl to unleash supersonic waves that pierce the hearts and heads of his victims.

Rampage Mode

Before breaking the seal, Cornell went insane from the curse and allegedly rampaged through Ada’s village with his comrades, slaughtering everyone. Overcome with guilt, Cornell rescued Ada, the sole survivor, and raised her as his own sister, swearing to protect and care for her. After gaining control over his transformation, Cornell can release his beast form's violent nature at will, capable of causing massacres to his victims. However, frequent use of this power takes a toll on Cornell's spirit.

Martial Arts

Even before releasing the seal, Cornell was a master of unarmed combat. His attacks were enhanced by his werewolf claws and powers.

Energy Blade

Through intense training, Cornell mastered the Energy Blade, launching light blades from his hands. These blades can be enhanced to become powerful enough to threaten even Dracula himself.

Mystic Weaponry

Though often berated as children of the night, Cornell mastered the Mystic Weapons, tools reserved for the best of the Vampire Hunters. These include the Boomerang Cross, Holy Water, Flame Dagger, Electric Axe, and Jagged Earth.

Normal Attacks

Cornell primarily attacks with his claws, performing a variety of slashes with their sharp edges.

Wind Smash

Cornell unleashes a powerful slash through the air, creating a cutting gust that slices enemies into pieces.

Invisible Claw

Cornell vanishes with incredible speed and delivers a downward slash. This move can also be used defensively to evade attacks.

Assassin's Claw

Cornell executes a precise and deadly cross-shaped slash on his enemies.

Howl

As a werewolf, Cornell emits a powerful howl that pierces defenses, stuns enemies, and inflicts damage.

Rampage Mode

Cornell taps into his full strength, unleashing his pent-up power in a violent flurry of faster, farther-reaching, and more forceful slashes. However, this drains the Hyper Meter and leaves Cornell vulnerable afterward.

Hyper Attack

Cornell begins with a fearsome howl, rushing toward his enemy at incredible speed and delivering a rapid

Other

Standard Tactics: Cornell will utilize his martial arts in combat along with his energy blade attacks and werewolf transformation, along with the sub-weapon that best suits the situation.

Trivia

  • One of Cornell's animations in Legacy of Darkness, where he can be seen performing a characteristic footwork and a middle kick, is a reference to legendary actor and martial artist Bruce Lee. This animation is the only remain of his original concept as a melee character.
  • Originally, Cornell was called "Cornell Reinhardt"; however, after he was cut as a playable character in Castlevania 64, his surname was given to Schneider Belmont, turning him into Reinhardt Schneider.
  • Cornell's personal stage in Castlevania 64 was the Duel Tower. This level was instead given to the Reinhardt Schneider in the final game.
  • Cornell was originally slated to appear in Castlevania (N64) as Dracula's prisoner. Also, he was supposed to be the first character in the history of the series to use martial arts. However, time constraints required developers to cut a lot of content from the game, including playable characters, bosses and abilities, with only Reinhardt and Carrie as playable characters, further backing up the notion that Legacy of Darkness was a "director's cut", what the first game was supposed to have been in the first place. In fact, Cornell's alternate costume is what his primary costume was to be in his original incarnation.

Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended.
