Henry Oldrey

From The Codex
"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Oh, you're all OK. Shall we go back to town? Your families are worried sick!
~ Henry to the six missing kids

Background

Henry Oldrey is one of the playable characters in *Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness*. His role spans both his own dedicated adventure and an appearance during Cornell's quest, where he is portrayed as a 10-year-old boy. Years later, Henry matures into a powerful and imposing figure, donning medieval knight-style armor. Unlike traditional vampire hunters, his weapon of choice is a firearm, showcasing a distinct approach to combat.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Henry Oldrey’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Cornell first meets Henry in the Villa, which had once been Henry's home. However, the Villa had recently become a site of horror. Henry’s father had been transformed into a vampire, and he was now attempting to do the same to his wife and son. At the same time, monstrous creatures had surrounded the estate, placing the family in grave danger. In an attempt to escape, Henry ventured into a nearby labyrinth but was attacked by a chainsaw-wielding madman. It was Cornell’s timely intervention that saved Henry’s life. Henry's mother had sent Cornell to rescue her son while she chose to stay in the Villa, resigned to whatever fate awaited her. After guiding Henry through the deadly maze, Cornell ensures his escape into the forest.

Henry later reunites with Cornell at the conclusion of Cornell’s journey. Along with his sister, Ada, Henry looks to the future, determined to start a new chapter in life.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness – Henry's Quest
Eight years later, Henry returns, and both he and the world around him have changed. Dark forces are once again rising, and reports of children being abducted from nearby villages stir unease. Now a seasoned Holy Knight of the Church, Henry is entrusted with the task of rescuing six missing children from Dracula's Castle. However, the mission is urgent: Henry has just one week to complete it before the castle is predicted to collapse. Alongside Reinhardt, a fellow knight, and Carrie, a sorceress, Henry sets out on a quest to stop Dracula’s dark plans.

Unlike the other character quests, Henry’s journey is less plot-driven and more open-ended. The order in which the children are rescued depends on the player’s choices, and the quest features minimal cutscenes. There is no central boss or enemy to defeat, and the ending is relatively short, with slight changes based on how many children the player succeeds in rescuing.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Acrobatics (Able to jump and reach platforms that are over twice his height[26]), Weapon Mastery (Firearm Mastery; Henry is a skilled marksman, able to shoot several enemies with perfect accuracy even while moving around[27]. Sword Mastery; Uses a short sword in combat for close quarters purposes[28]. Knife Mastery; With Knife, throws at a fast rate in a straight line[29]. Axe Mastery; With Axe, throws at an arc trajectory to knock down enemies[30]. Boomerang Mastery; With Cross, throws a holy cross in a whirlpool orbit to knock down enemies[31]), Sheer Will (Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeat Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmont's strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[32]. Alucard notes that having something to protect surpasses the limits of strength[33]), Non-Standard Interaction (Metaphysical Interaction; Can interact with and kill ghost[34]).
Resistance to Petrification (Henry isn't fully petrified by Medusa's petrification beam and can break out of it[35]), Corruption (After Henry is bitten by a vampire, it takes until midnight for him to be able to fully turn, being able to get a purfying potion beforehand[36], along with this, it takes multiple bites before Henry gets the vampire status[37]), Lifeforce Absorption & Curse Manipulation (Can take hits from spirits[38], which is an evil spirit that sucks up people's life energy[39], along with them being able to inflict the curse status[40]),
Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Can enter Dracula's Castle without experiencing any adverse effects[41])

The Castle Abilities Include:

Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[42], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the cloud srotate at a fast speed[43]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[44]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[45]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[46]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[47]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[48]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[49], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[50]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[51]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[52]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[53]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[54]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[55]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[56]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[57]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[58]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[59] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[60]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[61]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[62]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[63]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[64]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[65], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[66] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[67], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[68], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[69], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[70], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[71]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[72]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[73], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[74]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[75]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[76], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[77]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[78], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[79]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[80])

If Henry does not cure the vampire status in time, he will give in and become a Creature of the Night[99], giving him:

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[100], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[101]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[102]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[103]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[104]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[105], along with ignoring the very passage of time[106]. With their souls being completely free from time[107]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[108]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[109]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[110], becoming stronger when it's night time[111]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[112] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[113]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[114]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[115]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[116], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[117], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[118]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[119]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[120]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[121]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[122], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[123]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[124]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[125]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[126], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[127], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[128], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[129]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[130]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[131], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[132]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[133]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[134]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[135]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[136]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[137]), Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[138], with their souls being completely free from time[139]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[140], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[141]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[142]), Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[143], with their souls being completely free from time[144], with fate being a truth wound by time[145])

Is a Vampire, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Vampires are considered far larger threats than the standard creature of the night monsters[146]), Stealth Mastery (Vampires are able to attack stealthily in search of human blood[147]), Disguise Mastery (Vampires will sometimes disguise themselves[148] as villages in order to get near one[149]), Immortality (Ageless; Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[150], with Mathias noting he has eternal life[151]. Aeon notes that vampires exist for eternity[152]. Walter is noted to be a vampire that has eternal life[153]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[154]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Vampires will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[155]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[156], along with ignoring the very passage of time[157]. With their souls being completely free from time[158]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[159]), Free Will (Vampires do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[160], defying God's decree[161]), Enhanced Senses (Vampires can smell that Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez smell different from the usual adventurer[162]), Surface Scaling (Vampires can stand on ceilings[163]), Flight (Vampires can either naturally levitate grow wings to fly[164], turn into a bat[165], or into mist[166]), Immersion (Vampires can infuse magic into paintings to increase their power[167]), Empowerment (Vampires are loved by the night, making them so powerful that vampires like Walter Bernhard never been defeated before Leon Belmont gained the vampire killer[168]. Noted by Leon that the night should help Joachim Armster as well due to him being a vampire, with the only reason it doesn't is due to Walter holding the ebony stone[169]), Resurrection (Even if one somehow manages to kill a vampire, they will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[170]), Transformation (Shapeshifting; Vampires can assume the shape of a wolf, a bat or fog[171]. Vampires can disguise themselves as huamns[172]), Teleportation (Vampires possess the ability to teleport freely[173]. Even non-threatening vampires such as Rosa, fade out from view[174]), Power Suppression (Vampires can submerge their own vampiric powers if needed[175]), Life-Force Absorption (Vampires can consume one's lifeforce[176], allowing them to heal themselves through biting into a victim[177]), Vampirification (Vampires can turn others into vampires[178], Walter turned Rinaldo's daughter into a vampire[179]), Invisibility (Vampires possess natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[180]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[181]), Animal Manipulation (Bats serve under the control of vampires[182], being freely spawnned by any vampire[183]), Cloth Manipulation (A vampire's blood can transform clothes, such as Hector combining a vampire's blood with a prince's clothes to get Dracula's clothes[184]), Electricity Manipulation (Vampires can sometimes have electricity form around them as they transform[185]), Soul Manipulation (The candles in Castlevania are people's souls that were taken by Death or by vampires[186]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Vampire's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[187]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[188]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[189], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[190], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[191], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[192]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[193]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[194], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[195]), Law Manipulation (Vampires can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[196]), Power Modification (Vampire's alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[197]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[198]).

Resistance to Temperatures (Vampires bodies turn cold, with them feeling no heat[199]), Biological Manipulation (Vampires biological functions are no longer required for them[200]), Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[201], with their souls being completely free from time[202]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[203], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[204]), Death Manipulation ("Death" loses all meaning for Vampires, as they[205] defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[206]. Where even if one "kills" a vampire they will simply just come back as they are not bound to death[207]), Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[208], with their souls being completely free from time[209], with fate being a truth wound by time[210]), Law Manipulation (Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[211])

Standard Vampire Techniques

  • Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[212] regenerate[213], from any kind[214] of damage due to it absorbing blood[215].
  • Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
  • Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
  • Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.

Other

Standard Tactics: Henry will use his gun and the sub-weapon that best suits the situation.

Trivia

  • This is the first character in the series to fight with a firearm.
  • The "victory" fanfare that plays whenever Henry saves a child is an excerpt from the Theme of Simon Belmont, first introduced to the series in Super Castlevania IV.
  • Henry's gameplay is based on the gameplay of the cut character Coller, who was turned into the Frankenstein Gardener players meet in the garden maze in the Villa stage. The major difference is that Coller was supposed to use a shotgun, while Henry uses a six-shot pistol.
    • Ironically, Cornell has to save Henry from the Gardener during the story.
  • Henry's exploration area is considerably more limited compared to the other three playable characters, consisting of only six levels, each of which is centered around rescuing a specific child. While some players may consider this section of the game to be less significant or forgettable due to its size, it's important to note that Henry's quest provides a unique chance to unlock secret characters and costumes, making it a worthwhile experience for those interested in fully exploring the game.
  • Despite sources online saying that Henry is 10 to 18, there has been no found official source on this so far.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't the characters be around tier 2 for defeating the Time Reaper who would've destroyed the very fabric of time[238], attempted to destroy the specific era of time[239], cause all beings everywhere to disappear, forever[240] and that the age was on the verge of collapse[241]?

A: We actually never get a direct outright method of Time Reaper's plan for doing this, from what Aeon mentions to Golem, if the Time Rift is not erased, all beings everywhere will disappear, forever[242], implying that it's the Time Rift causing this, this is further backed up by the fact that in Time Reaper's boss fight, there is a vortex in the background consuming everything[243], meaning this is an overtime feat that scales to no one physically.

Q: Shouldn't they get tier 2 for Dracula's influence destabilizing the flow of time[244]?

A: This is a potent ability but has nothing to do with Attack Potency, there is no quantification for "destabilizing the flow of time", along with this, even if it was taken as physically, then it would be overtime as the effects are not noticeable throughout most of Curse of Darkness.

Q: Shouldn't Dracula and by proxy anyone that scales to him get tier 2 for him being able to sustain his castle?

A: This goes under our Stabilization Feats standards, which treats sustaining feats are non-combat applicable Attack Potency normally, though in Dracula's case the Castle is speficially powered by the existence of a Dark Lord, and doesn't necessarily need their strength to rise. In the Castlevania novel, the castle rose without a Dark Lord as an example. Along with this, no one scales to the collapse of the castle, in Curse of Darkness Hector would've died to the collapse of the castle if[245] Julia didn't come save him, and Isaac died within the castle[246]. In other cases the Castle does not collapse[247], but instead slowly fades away[248]. At the end of Dawn of Sorrow Soma Cruz and Genya Arikado (aka Alucard) must escape the collapsing abyss.

Q: Shouldn't Castlevania characters that scale to Death have Infinite speed due to Death being able to kill distance itself with his attacks?

A: Killing distance to attack is not a speed feat, it's a method of Spatial Manipulation by circumventing and ignoring distance, while one can say the attack spawns on you instantly, this is not really something quantifiable. Along with this, it would only scale to characters comparable to Death during post-Dawn of Sorrow, as Soma notes Death is far faster than he remembered from his fight with him in Dawn of Sorrow[249].

There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children."
  58. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it. Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.

  186. WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.
