This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Even if the world of man rejects me... Even if I were to have no place to exist... Even if I were to be hated... Even so... I am human. I sought this power so that I could remain human! Not for anyone's sake! For me! For myself! Not to be the pawn in some ridculous plot for revenge!!
~ Hector to Isaac

Background

Hector is the protagonist of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. He is a former general of Dracula who had decided he had enough of killing and fled. A woman Hector had later found contentment with was killed by his old comrade Isaac and he enters Dracula's domain in the game with the intent of avenging his wife and himself upon Isaac.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Hector’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Childhood
Hector was the son of an alchemist, but his life was far from ordinary or easy. Animals seemed naturally drawn to him, both creatures of the day and night, which made him an outcast. People saw this as unnatural, leading to his mother openly wishing he hadn’t been born, and his father barely noticed his existence, fixated on wealth and power. Witnessing Hector’s suffering, the animals caused a fire at the church, killing his family and neighbors to free him from his torment. They encouraged Hector to go to Dracula’s Castle, where he would finally be accepted.

At Dracula's Castle
Two years after another Devil Forgemaster named Isaac arrived, Hector found his way to Dracula’s Castle. His potential was quickly recognized, and he soon became a favorite. For Hector, power itself wasn’t good or evil—what mattered was having it. Mastering the art of devil alchemy, he created creatures and gained power alongside Isaac, rising to the rank of general and becoming Dracula’s most trusted human ally. But despite his loyalty, Hector resisted using his abilities to hurt humans. Even as Dracula waged war, he pleaded to stop but was forced to obey his master. Finally, Dracula ordered him to kill a Belmont, but instead, Hector took this chance to escape.

Defection and Meeting Rosaly
After leaving Dracula’s Castle, Hector was found injured by Rosaly, a kind woman who took him to her village’s church to heal. Dracula sensed the disappearance of his power and sent Isaac to investigate. Though Hector tried to hide, he was eventually tracked down by Isaac, who had been driven mad by Dracula’s curse. Hector killed a werewolf sent after him, but shortly after, Trevor Belmont defeated Dracula, freeing Wallachia. Isaac, badly injured in their battle, left Hector, who found peace living with Rosaly in a village still haunted by Dracula’s curse.

Village Life and Isaac’s Return
Hector lived peacefully with Rosaly for three years, finding a family and acceptance he’d never known. But Isaac, corrupted by Dracula’s curse and driven by hatred, was determined to take everything from him. He manipulated the villagers into accusing Rosaly of being a witch, and Hector arrived too late to save her from being burned at the stake. Heartbroken, Hector swore vengeance on Isaac.

Events of Curse of Darkness (Game)
Fueled by grief and anger, Hector set off to hunt down Isaac. Along the way, he restored his Devil Forgemaster powers and encountered both allies and enemies, including the enigmatic Zead and the time-traveler St. Germain. He also crossed paths with Trevor Belmont, who initially mistook him for the source of the ongoing chaos.

During his pursuit, Hector met Julia, Isaac’s sister, who pleaded with him to spare her brother, who had been driven to madness by the curse. Hector, though focused on revenge, agreed to her request. In the midst of his journey, he discovered that Zead and St. Germain were locked in their own mysterious rivalry.

Final Confrontation and Dracula’s Resurrection
Hector finally confronted Isaac in Dracula’s resurrected castle. Realizing that his thirst for revenge was part of Dracula’s curse, Hector hesitated to strike the final blow, choosing instead to spare Isaac. At that moment, Zead revealed himself as Death, who had orchestrated events to resurrect Dracula by using Isaac as a vessel. Hector defeated Death, and though weakened, faced Dracula, ultimately nullifying the curse with his powers after vanquishing his former master.

Aftermath
With Dracula’s castle collapsing, Hector was saved by Julia, who invited him to stay with her and offered a safe home for his Innocent Devils. Relieved and hopeful, Hector accepted, finding a new beginning alongside her and a chance at the peace he had long sought.

With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[170]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to greatly strengthen their dark powers[171]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[172]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[173], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[174], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[175], where if the books contents change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[176]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[177]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[178]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[179]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger then them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[180]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[183]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[184]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[185], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[186]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss level creatures[187]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[188], with fate being a truth wound by time[189])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Innocent Devils receive their powers from a devil forgemaster transferring the energy into their shells, the more powerful the devil, the larger its power to stabilize[190]), Accelerated Development (Leveling, Physical Stats and Abilities; Innocent Devils level up with experience points by defeating enemies[191]), Evolution & Absorption (Through Innocent Devils absorbing "evolution crystals"[192], they will evolve, having their from change and obtaining new types of abilities[193]), Bestowal (Innocent Devils are mystical untainted familiars created by a devil forgemaster that grants status enhancements[194]), Regeneration (Low-Godly; Innocent Devils will revert to their soul form if they lose all hearts, if the devil forgetmsaster gathers enough hearts for them the Innocent Devils soul[195] can then be restored to material form[196]), Immortality (Life and Death Immunity; Innocent Devils are unable to die no matter the attack[197]), Teleportation (As one executes certain combos, the word "chain" may appear, if they chains correctly, the Innocent Devil will warp in front and add a cooperative attack[198]), Creation (Innocent Devils will occassionally create "Devil Shards", which can be used to create new Innocent Devils[199]).

Miscellaneous Feats

Trivia

  • Hector's favorite room is likely the chair room as he showcases a fondness of sitting in different chairs in the castle.
  • Hector shares some common traits with Alucard: Both of them can have familiars fighting alongside them, skills with multiple weapons and magic, and the attitude of defection from Dracula's grasp.
  • Hector's name is most famously known for being that of one noble but unfortunate Trojan general, whom Achilles dispatched. The name itself is Greek in origin and means "holding fast" - appropriate for the steadfast forgemaster. It is Hector's strength, will and perseverance that saved him from becoming Dracula's next host.
  • His blue eyes, like Isaac's red hair, are a trait associated with vampirism in Balkan mythology and in folklore from some parts of Greece. These stories held that a blue-eyed person would become a vampire after death, or that they were already vampiric in nature. It is speculated that Hector and Isaac are no longer mortal men - although Dracula considers them still to be human, and thus lesser.
  • It's worth pointing out the contrast between Isaac and Hector physical appearance; their dressing style is very different, as is the color of their hair. Isaac's fiery red hair may be taken as a symbol of hatred and anger, while Hector's white hair may be thought of as a symbol of purity, wisdom and nobility. In short, Hector is the opposite of everything Isaac has become.
  • In the game's cinematics, Hector is almost never seen wielding weapons, he simply fights with his bare fists instead. The only cinematic where he's seen holding a weapon is in the introductory trailer, where he uses the Laser Blade against Isaac.
  • Hector is one of the only Castlevania protagonists without a known last name.
    • Devil Forgemasters are known to go only by their first name. While the reason for this has never been explained, it is probable that the dropping of their family name is part of the requirements while studying the black arts, as a way to symbolize their renunciation to any bonds that may still tie them with their past normal lives.
  • Hector shares his English voice actor, Crispin Freeman, with Mathias Cronqvist from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, the latter of whom would ultimately become his master, Dracula.
  • The manner in which Isaac tries to get Hector to pursue him, having his wife Rosaly executed at the stake, is very similar to how his master Dracula's wife Lisa ended up dying.
  • In the series' chronological history, he is the first hero to defeat Dracula without being a member of the Belmont Clan.

  124. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
    “……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
    Kill the distance-----
    Kill the sound-----
    Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
    “……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.
The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood."

    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. 365. "For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul.
He understood that something is flowing inside him.
The quantity is small but he realized that this hot magma like thing is eating away his existence. But, in his state it is hard to differentiate whether he is losing control over his boy or his spirit. Still not understanding what is happening to his soul, Curtis just felt that he would soon fade away no matter what he does.
    -----That’s …… enough……
    -----I……don’t care……what happens anymore.
Curtis threw away all his feelings, and just wished.
-----I just want her……to live happily.
Even if he can overcome pain, fear and despair by himself, his soul can only wish.
    And----- his wish reached god.
However, that god is such in name, but his existence is far from Curtis’ faith."

  372. WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.
