Background

Sephiroth is the main overarching antagonist of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Once a legendary SOLDIER and unrivaled swordsman who served as the inspiration for countless SOLDIER candidates across the years, Sephiroth found out about the truth behind his unnatural birth and was driven insane. He grew to hate the planet and sought to destroy it, only to be opposed by Cloud Strife and his friends.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Sephiroth’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Sephiroth, having been raised inside of the Shinra Power Electric Company and trained his entire life, was viewed as unstoppable in combat even as a young boy. Thanks to his unrivalled levels of skill, he was instrumental in ending Shinra's war with Wutai, and was promptly hailed as a hero. Several young boys from around the world, including Cloud Strife, were inspired by Sephiroth as a result.

During his glory days as a SOLDIER 1st Class, Sephiroth was best friends with Angeal Hewley and Genesis Rhapsodos, fellow SOLDIERs who constantly served as sparring partners for him. With Genesis and Angeal's departure from Shinra, however, Sephiroth was sent down a long spiral of figuring out his true identity. On a mission to Nibelheim alongside Zack Fair, Sephiroth discovered the ancient alien, JENOVA, who shared the same name as his mother.

After countless days of obsessive research inside the Shinra Mansion, Sephiroth learned the truth; he was a lab experiment created by Shinra, using JENOVA's DNA. Because of this, Sephiroth viewed himself as a monster who was wronged by the planet, and fell into insanity. Growing enraged with the planet, Sephiroth murdered the people of Nibelheim and reunited with JENOVA. However, he was opposed by Zack and Cloud Strife, who managed to fatally wound Sephiroth and send him tumbling into the Lifestream.

From then on, Sephiroth's anger grew to extreme levels, and he developed an obsessive hatred towards Cloud Strife. Having been partially diffused into the Lifestream, Sephiroth acted from a distance and would use the JENOVA DNA within Cloud to control him and do his bidding; eventually leading to Cloud delivering the Black Materia to him. Using the Black Materia, Sephiroth would call upon Meteor to destroy the planet. He was once again opposed by Cloud, however, and seemingly killed for good.

Two years passed, and a horrible plague known as Geostigma infested the planet. This was the doing of Sephiroth and JENOVA, who still existed within the Lifestream as they could not be completely diffused into it. Sephiroth used his will to develop three remnants of himself, Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo. These remnants scoured the planet for JENOVA's head, eventually finding it and bringing Sephiroth back to the living world. After a long and arduous final battle against Cloud, however, he was once again killed. With his final words, he claimed that he would never only be a memory.

Later, he was able to gain extreme amounts of knowledge of the thousand-year old alien, JENOVA, and gain knowledge through the Negative Lifestream)

Powers and Techniques

Spirit Energy Physiology, which includes: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Blessed (Everyone born into the world is blessed with Spirit Energy), Sheer Will (Willpower alone can be enough to fight off Mako poisoning, and the will of Jenova. Those with a strong enough will can retain their sense of self after dying and returning to the Lifestream), Memory Manipulation, Energy Manipulation, Rage Power, & Aura (Limit Breaks are born of memories, are comprised of Spirit Energy, and are unleashed when the user's anger is pushed to the limit. They give off an aura when used), Non-Standard Interaction (Characters can interact with the souls of the Gi Tribe), Regeneration Negation (Biological; Can completely kill pieces of Jenova, preventing them from regenerating). Jenova can regenerate itself fully so long as its cells remain, as Cloud Strife participates in Jenova's Reunion despite only containing her cells. Despite this, pieces of Jenova defeated by the heroes were unable to enact the Reunion), Accelerated Development (When Sephiroth fought the party far earlier than he was supposed to, the main characters could still contend with him, even after Sephiroth absorbed the Whispers and became stronger than he had ever been)

Equipment

  • Masamune: Sephiroth's primary weapon is an extremely large odachi-type blade, with a length of around seven feet long. Because of its length, Sephiroth is able to utilize this blade almost as more of a ranged weapon than a melee weapon. It's very durable, able to cut through metal with ease, though Sephiroth prefers to use it more for piercing foes. This blade has six whole Materia blades, and can be summoned by Sephiroth at will from the Negative Lifestream.

Notable Techniques

  • Energy Blade: Sephiroth can use giant crescent beams of energy that are launched from swings of his Masamune. He's used this previously to cut through a giant Mako Cannon during his fight with Genesis Rhapsodos.
  • Energy Shockwave: Sephiroth gathers a massive amount of energy into the Masamune, which he then stabs into the ground to unleash a huge shockwave.
  • Octaslash: Sephiroth's most iconic move, which has him use the Masamune to quickly slash the opponent eight consecutive times.
  • Heartless Angel: Summons a small angel that sprinkles magic on the opponent, which leaves them with 1 HP.
  • Supernova: Sephiroth's ultimate attack, which has him create his own pocket dimension where a gigantic meteor of energy collides with the sun. The sun is detonated, expanding into a massive supernova that engulfs the entire solar system and destroys each planet individually.
  • Geostigma: Also called Jenova’s Memetic Legacy, Geostigma is a horrible plague that Kadaj can inflict on others. Those infected with Geostigma will become infected with S-Cells and thus be subject to the Reunion. Those infected with Geostigma become extremely physically weak, and experience intolerable pain in the affected area that secretes a black ooze.

Other

Weaknesses: Sephiroth is extremely arrogant in his own abilities, to the point where he viewed Cloud overpowering him as impossible, which then led to his death. His hatred of Cloud has grown to obsessive levels, and can oftentimes impede on his own goals, as he will sometimes go out of his way to try and make Cloud suffer.
