Ares (God of War)

“ | I have taught you many ways to kill a mortal, Kratos. Flesh that burns, bones that break. But to break a man's spirit, is to truly destroy him. | „ |
“ | Once your soul is in my grasp, warrior, I will grant you the strength to crush your enemies. | „ |
Background
Ares was the original Olympian God of War, and the son of Zeus and Hera and the main antagonist of God of War, as well as the perpetrator behind the events of God of War: Ascension, meaning he was also responsible for setting the events of the series into motion by tricking Kratos into killing his family and turning him into the Ghost of Sparta, which eventually fulfilled the prophecy of the Marked Warrior who would destroy Olympus and end the reign of the Gods. Ares was the oldest child of Zeus and was commonly referred to as the most hated god on Mount Olympus, even before being killed by Kratos.

Powers and Techniques
Equipment
- Battle Armor of Ares: The Battle Armor of Ares is an armor that only those with allegiance to Ares use. The armor features a helmet that covers almost all the face, shoulder/biceps, vambraces and greaves, full chest protection and is adorned with skulls. The main color is red, as a relation to Ares, and the secondary color is silver/chrome. It adds +13% Physical Damage; +4% Physical Defense. The Godly Armor of Ares adds +15% Physical Damage; +8% Physical Defense.
- Blade of Ares: The Blade of Ares was a two-handed sword from Multiplayer that was only available to players who were aligned with Ares. The blade was rectangular and silver, and the hilt, which was said to have been made of the skull of a Harpy, had a part that shined red. It was a sword of brute strength that was good for close and medium range combat, usually with focus on a single enemy. When it was leveled up, it mixed the elemental powers of Ares to its special attacks, which gave them the ability to burn the enemy (which disabled their defenses) or unleashed a large wave of fire that knocked back multiple opponents at once. In battle, that reliable blade could harm and murder enemies with surprising efficiency. It adds +13% Physical Power. The Godly War Blade of Ares adds +14% Physical Power; +7% Elemental Power.
- Cestus of Ares: The Cestus of Ares are a pair of gauntlets unique for those aligned with Ares. A weapon made for War, they are perfect for a fiery crowd control. The Cestus of Ares have a look similar to the Gladiator Gauntlets with the front appearing as a battering ram. Made of the bronze battering rams of Ares, they resemble his madness for war. A simple design with only one purpose: a swift victory. It adds +3% Health Point; + 11% Physical Power.
- Fury Armor: The Fury Armor is an unlockable armor set for those who swear allegiance to Ares. The armor features a helmet that covers all the face, shoulder/biceps, lower arm and leg plates, seemingly with no protection in the chest, like the Orion costume. The armor itself is identical to the one that the Fury Megaera wears. The overall appearance resembles a gladiator-style armor. It adds +9 Physical Damage; +7% Elemental Damage; +5% Cooltime Reduction. The Golden Fury Armor adds +10 Physical Damage; +8% Elemental Damage; +8% Cooltime Reduction.
- Gauntlets of Ares: The Gauntlets of Ares are DLC Multiplayer weapons only available to players with alignment to Ares. The gauntlets consist of skulls that had their flesh burned, as stated in the first description, which have been put together with red iron structures. They are strong weapons that channel Ares' fiery powers mainly through powerful and wide ground pounds. As mentioned above, due to the long range of their attacks and the speed they're performed, they are a good choice when starting a battle, even when there's more than one enemy in the area. Use the unblockable attacks of these gauntlets to crush the skulls of anyone who dares to stand in ones path. It adds +3% Health; +10% Physical Power.
- Lance of Ares: The Lance of Ares is a weapon only available to players aligned with Ares. It adds +3% Physical Damage; +10% Elemental Damage. The Godly Lance of Ares adds +3% Physical Damage; +12% Elemental Damage; +4% Cooldown Reduction.
- Maul of Ares: The Maul of Ares is a Multiplayer weapon only available to players with alignment to Ares. It adds +5% Physical Power; +7% Elemental Power; +4% Physical Resist. The Godly Maul of Ares adds +10% Physical Power; +10% Elemental Power; +4% Physical Resist.
- Olympus Armor of Ares: The Olympus Armor of Ares is a powerful DLC set of armor of Multiplayer exclusive for warriors aligned to Ares, this armor offers enough power to defeat entire armies of enemies, but greatly decreases the owner's resistance to damage. It adds +16% Physical Power; +13% Elemental Power; -4% Physical Resist.
- Spear of Ares: The Spear of Ares is a weapon exclusive to warriors of Ares. The spear has three pointy blades on its end, and as described above, three dog heads carved right below them. The Spear of Ares is a weapon designed for medium and short range combat. The Grappling Hooks used by all warriors are attached to the rod in its special attacks for the spear to be tossed in front of the user, which focus on a single foe, or around him, which hits every nearby foe, and then pulled back when the attack is over. The result of this are medium ranged combos in which the spear spins at enemies multiple times, dealing repeated damage before delivering a final blow that knocks them away. Assault your enemies by fiercely slicing them with this quick and deadly weapon. It adds +10% Physical Power; +7% Elemental Power. The Godly War Spear of Ares adds +11% Physical Power; +10% Elemental Power.
- Sword of Ares: The Sword of Ares is a weapon from Multiplayer only available to players aligned with Ares. The Sword has many pointy parts to slice the enemy with more effectiveness and, as mentioned above, it's double edged. It also has the image of a soldier's helm on its hilt, whose eyes glow red. This is a weapon for ranged combat that can deliver multiple hits to enemies in a single moment. However, most of its attacks are blockable (excluding the final blow of Battlefield Snare), and players must time them precisely to avoid being parried. The superior range of the blade even allows it to attack multiple enemies at once, usually knocking them away in the final blow. Each attack of the Sword of Ares is an onslaught capable of slaying opponents in a swift and fierce fashion. It adds +11% Physical Power; +4% Cooldown Reduction. The Godly War Sword of Ares adds +12% Physical Power; +6% Cooldown Reduction.
- The War Hammer of Olympus: The War Hammer of Olympus is a weapon in God of War: Ascension's Multiplayer available only to warriors who have sworn an oath to Ares. The War Hammer of Olympus is the giant hammer of Ares, one of his weapons of choice. At the end of God of War, it was one of the conjurable weapons he used during his battle against Kratos. One side of the hammer is a spiked surface as the other side is shaped in the head of a Cerberus, the ears included. The weapon increases the size of its user during its special attacks, which considerably increases their range and makes it useful when dealing with multiple enemies. The attacks of this weapon are physical-based devastating attacks that, along with the large quantity of extra Physical Power offered by it, can shave off a great part of an enemy's health bar as well as knock them away in the end. This gift of Lord Ares to his best champions will wipe out any fool who dares to stand in its way. It adds +15% Physical Power; +7% Physical Resist; +4% Elemental Resist.
- War Armor of Ares: The War Armor of Ares is a set of armor only available to warriors pledged to Ares in Multiplayer. It adds +2 Health; +9% Physical Damage; +8% Physical Defense. The Godly War Armor of Ares adds +4 Health; +10% Physical Damage; +12% Physical Defense.
- War Hammer of Ares: The War Hammer of Ares is a weapon of Ares. This is a metallic hammer with an image of Ares himself in his "beast" form on it, showing his monstrous spider-like legs. Although it can be considered a basic weapon, this hammer can be very powerful and useful in battle. Its attacks consist of fiery ground slams that can either knock opponents away or in the air, which makes it good to knock them out of an arena, for example. In a combat against a single enemy player, it can be deadly and enough to overpower the foe within seconds, depending on the skills of its user. As a tool of brutal devastation, hundreds of warriors will fall before the crushing wrath of the War Hammer of Ares. It adds +10% Physical Power; +4% Physical Resist. The Godly Hammer of Ares adds +12% Physical Power; +5% Physical Resist.
Notable Techniques
- Dimensiokinesis: Ares was able to create pocket universes that he could control completely. Ares demonstrated that during his battle with Kratos, where he trapped him in his own mind, where he was forced to protect his family, for Ares to kill after all, and almost broke his spirit. However, the pocket universe seemed to be made in Kratos' head instead of an actual physical dimension as when he returned to his giant body, he was kneeling as Ares appeared behind him and was ready to strike him down.
- Enhanced Senses: Ares was able to sense how Kratos retrieved Pandora's Box while being dozens of miles away from the Desert of Lost Souls.
- Immortality: As a god, Ares was innately immortal; neither aging beyond his prime nor succumbing to mortal frailty such as disease or impotence of any sort. He could not be slain by earthly weapons; only divine forces and weapons such as the power of Hope, Blade of the Gods or other immortals such as Titans could slay him.
- Power Bestowal: Ares was able to grant the chosen warrior with a large variety of abilities and weapons, a power common among the Gods. It was he who gave Kratos his original blades, the Blades of Chaos. He also granted the Redeemed Warrior, if he chose to follow him, the highest amount of attack power as well as the ability to empower their weapons with fire to burn enemies.
- Pyrokinesis: Ares possessed the ability to manipulate fire, in every way possible. Ares was able to infuse it in his weapons, throw fireballs from his hands, and ignited people at will. Ares often used that ability to kill those who opposed him. Ares also used it in an aesthetic way, as his hair and facial hair were made of fire.
- Astral Projection: Ares was able to project an image of himself out of the fire to communicate to Kratos after the Spartan killed his family.
- Shapeshifting: As an Olympian, Ares was able to alter his appearance at will. He did that however to a small extent as the change of his hair was altered between God of War: Ascension and God of War.
- Size Alteration: Ares was able to alter his size, and often increased it to titanic proportions, as he did during the Battle of Athens.
- Transformation: Ares was able to sprout large, spider-like protrusions from his back that could be used in combat to hit and impale his enemies. Based on the fact that his statue in God of War: Ascension bore those "claws", it is implied that this was a trademark feature of the War God.
- Telepathy: Ares was able to talk to people through their minds, without physically getting involved with his target. He can even do this after creating his pocket dimension as he used it to mentally taunt Kratos.
- Telekinesis: Ares was able to move objects and people with his mind and did that on a massive scale. Ares used the ability to rip the Blades of Chaos from Kratos' arms, and, during the Battle with the Barbarians, lifted people in the air and broke them in half.
- Teleportation: Throughout his battle with Kratos, Ares was able to teleport all around the area very quickly.
- Geokinesis: Ares would occasionally summon enormous volcanic rock structures to try to harm Kratos.
- War Embodiment: As the original God of War, Ares was the embodiment of War itself and was able to draw power from it. In combination with his other abilities, Ares was able to lay waste to huge armies with little to no effort. When he died, Ares' body exploded like a nuclear bomb.
- Weapon Creation: During his final fight with Kratos, Ares has shown the ability to materialize various weapons such as a gigantic war hammer, an axe, and a sword, all of which were enveloped in flames.
- Underworld Control: Ares seems to have limited power over the forces of the Underworld. He crafted the Blades of Chaos from the deepest layers of Hades. Furthermore, the vast majority of Ares' army was made of undead monstrosities, hinting that he has limited necromancy.
- Monster Control: Ares could control over a vast legion of monsters which served as the backbone of his army. In conjunction with his undead troopers, he was able to command Harpies, Minotaurs, Gorgons, and Cyclops.
- Enhanced Marksmanship: As a god of war, he possessed a greater level of marksmanship as he was able to perfectly hurl a large pillar from Athens to the far-off Pandora's Temple in the Desert of Lost Souls to fatally impale Kratos.
- Blade of Ares
- Avenging Fire: A multiple spinning hit attack that is able to combo. Additional final wave burns enemies.
- Ares Rampage: An unblockable slam attack, capable of creating a wave of fire. During windup, can alternate to a horizontal wave.
- Cestus of Ares
- Warrior's Rebuttal: Summon a massive column of fire under your nearest enemy that launches and burns.
- Furious Aggression: Execute a flurry of ground pounds that culminate in a powerful rock wave smash attack that sends enemies flying.
- Gauntlets of Ares
- Discipline of War: Enter a powerful charge state and dash toward enemies to execute different attacks. Allows for a coop maneuver if near a teammate.
- Ground Pound: Perform a single and fiery ground pound that sweeps enemies off their feet.
- Uppercut: Deliver a powerful uppercut that launches you and a foe in the air. Good to perform air combos.
- Discipline of War cooperative maneuver: Leap from ally high in the air, crushing the ground in a fiery and wide ranged slam.
- Thero's Sanction: Slam both gauntlets on the ground, bouncing opponents in the air and setting up numerous combos.
- Discipline of War: Enter a powerful charge state and dash toward enemies to execute different attacks. Allows for a coop maneuver if near a teammate.
- Lance of Ares
- Enyo's Gift: Activates a mobile flamethrower. Can burn enemies and send them flying back.
- Burning Hostility: Summon a ring of fire that burns and damages anyone who cross the barrier. Create an aura that adds physical attack power.
- Maul of Ares
- Wrath of Ares: Large sweeping attack that launches enemies and leaves a fiery hazard.
- Drums of War: Grow to the size of a demigod and summon a shield of fire. Can perform a powerful stomp along with this.
- Spear of Ares
- Retaliation of Eris: Boomerang based physical attack that locks opponents down and deals repeated damage.
- Mongrel Ascension: Vertical boomerang attack that launches and then bounces enemies. Final slam can now burn enemies.
- Sword of Ares
- War God's Ascension: A chained-based spinning physical attack with massive range.
- Battlefield snare: A powerful physical attack with superior range, capable of stunning, launching and bouncing enemies. Final slam applies burn on enemies.
- The War Hammer of Olympus
- Heat of Battle: Swing the Hammer 4 times while moving towards the target.
- Blistering Revenge: Swing the Hammer twice, knocking an opponent far back with each hit.
- War Hammer of Ares
- Flames of Destruction: A powerful ranged energy wave that sends enemies flying.
- Ares' Defiance: A slam attack that burns and knocks enemies airborn.
Other
Standard Tactics: Ares shows during his assault on the city of Athens to send his minions to attack and grow in size to that of a giant while attacking it and fighting Kratos.
Weaknesses: His arrogance in wanting a perfect warrior led to his downfall.
Trivia
- Ares is technically responsible for the events of the Greek-era games of the series: by tricking Kratos into killing his family, he would set him on the path that would lead to Olympus' destruction.
- Ares is the first character to successfully kill Kratos followed by Zeus.
- A secret video of the original game had Kratos revealing that he trapped Ares' soul inside a secret room, and he will eventually use it against the gods. It is never mentioned again and by the end of the third game, it is unlikely it will be brought up ever again.
- Ares was voiced by Steven Blum in God of War and God of War: Ascension, and by Fred Tatasciore in God of War III. Interestingly, he shared the same voice actor (Steven Blum) as Lucifer from the animated movie of Dante's Inferno, a game that shared many gameplay mechanics and themes.
- Ares' appearance changed dramatically during the development of God of War. Originally, David Jaffe had intended for the god to appear as "ninety percent energy and ten percent material", but because of the limited power of the PS2, Ares' appearance was gradually stripped back to the warrior seen in the final product.
- During the final battle, after Kratos is robbed of his blades and magic, Ares will use the Army of Hades ability, implying he has some degree of power stealing or perhaps, with him being a God, can also withdraw blessings or powers other Olympians have given him.
- Because he was killed by Kratos, it was rather unlikely that Ares had a chance to be affected by the evils of Pandora's Box, as he did not truly display any characteristics of the evils the Box contained. As such, Ares' threat to attack Olympus as well as his bloodthirsty ways were already part of his own character.
- Ares is technically responsible for Kratos' standard appearance (with the exception of the scar on the latter's abdomen). He attacked Kratos when the latter was a child, giving him a scar on his right eye and then took Deimos away, leaving Kratos to think his brother was dead and thus causing him to tattoo himself in a way similar to Deimos' birthmark. He also tricked Kratos into killing his own family, thereby causing their ashes to attach themselves to his skin. He even gave Kratos horrific burns on his forearms upon searing the Blades of Chaos to them.
- It is unknown why, even if he was an enemy of Kratos, his illusion was used by Gaia in God of War II to encourage Kratos to fight back and revive himself after his death at the hands of Zeus.
- Ares' human-sized avatar was only seen in Ghost of Sparta: in flashbacks that showed him taking Deimos away and scarring Kratos.
- Ares was one of the mentors for God of War: Ascension Multiplayer. That made him the only mentor who wasn't a son of Cronos: he's his grandson instead.
- Strangely, when Ares is killed, there is no Earthly consequence of his death as was the case for other Gods, such as Poseidon's death causing massive flooding or Helios' death causing the world to be covered in darkness. While this phenomenon was only implemented many games after the original God of War when Ares was killed, no explanation is provided for the lack of consequence of Ares death.
- Ares was depicted as having hair and facial hair made of flaming energy, although when his corpse is seen in God of War III, his hair is simply normal red hair.
- Ares was ranked on 55th place of the Top 100 Video Game Villains on IGN.
- Ares was the only God in the series shown with the ability to grow retractable blade-like spider legs from his back. It remained unknown if there were other Olympians with that ability or if it's unique to Ares. Megaera, one of the Furies, had spider-like legs growing out of her back: their appearance was very similar, though more insect-like, compared to Ares' but they were not on fire, and they seemed to be truly a part of her physiology.
- Based on Ares' appearance in God of War: Ascension, his ability to grow those spider legs wasn't a secret to the Champions of Ares. In other words, Kratos would have known that Ares had that ability as was implied by Kratos' complete lack of surprise. The legs were mostly a surprise for the gamer.
- The Champions of Ares had a natural bounding with fire and gained energy from battle as revealed in Ares' Trailer of Ascension.
- In God of War: Ascension, Ares was seen with shorter hair and beard than in the other games. The reason of the change was still unknown.
- It was most likely, however, that Ares, like the other Gods, could change his appearance depending on whatever suited him.
- Since Ares' appearance in Ascension is shown in flashbacks, it is possible this was Ares' appearance prior to Kratos' birth or as the game took place ten years prior to the original game.
- Ironically, Ares lacks a mustache with his facial hair, a gesture which is seen by most cultures as a symbol of non-violence and pacifism. Mustaches are strongly associated with military services and thus removing them was considered a symbolic gesture of rejecting militarism.
