“ | An extraterrestrial life-form that is thought to have fallen from the heavens 65 million years ago. On the time line that existed before history was changed, Lavos was assumed to have slept deep below the planet's surface… Sleeping and consuming the planet's energy up until the day of destruction known as the '"Apocalypse."' There are those who believe that, 12 thousand years ago, the legendary ancient magical civilization known as Zeal came into contact with Lavos. That fateful encounter is said to have resulted in Zeal disappearing from the surface of the planet within the space of a single night. However, the very existence of the ancient civilization of Zeal has never been proven, so up till this day this theory cannot be confirmed. On some time lines, Lavos appeared on the surface of the planet in the year 1999 and brought the world to ruins. However, a group of young time travelers saw where their planet's history was heading and, through their actions, rewrote time. This very research facility exists on that new time line… In a world where, thanks to the defeat of Lavos by the young adventurers, the Apocalypse never happened… On a temporal vector where human civilization continued to evolve unhampered. All the data on Lavos that was obtained from tracing different parallel world possibilities has proven to be volatile, with fluctuating discrepencies. Perhaps, at this point in time, it is nearly impossible to obtain any true information about Lavos. | „ |

Lavos came to Earth with the intention of draining its energy so that it could produce genetically enhanced spawn, which would then continue the cycle on other planets. In the North American version of the game, it is claimed once in the series that Lavos directly influenced all technology and life on the planet, evolving the planet's life forms to cultivate it, and make itself stronger. However, the line is absent in the Japanese version. Despite it originally just being in translation, in Chrono Cross it appears this actually is the case as a large portion of the game involves many layers of timeline events being controlled which all end at Lavos. In the original timeline, Lavos slept for millions of years, gaining power until 1999 AD. He was summoned in 12000 BC by Queen Zeal and the Mammon Machine. He emerged from the Earth in 1999 AD and put the world into an apocalyptic state. However, because of the interference of many of the characters, he was summoned at two other points in time of 12000 BC and 600 AD. While traveling in the year of 2300 AD, Crono, Marle, and Lucca see a video of the Day of Lavos which occurred in 1999 AD and decide to prevent it somehow. Magus is also after Lavos for destroying his home era in the year 12000 BC. | Lavos came to Earth with the intention of draining its energy so that it could produce genetically enhanced spawn, which would then continue the cycle on other planets. While the natural dreamstone is a substance responsible for the first evolution of human beings from animal apes to sentient creatures, it is revealed in Chrono Cross that Lavos is responsible for the creation and advancement of the actual modern human species. Upon impact, a splinter of Lavos's shell broke off. This becomes the focal point of Chrono Cross, the Frozen Flame. Lavos is also the final boss in Chrono Cross, except in the form of the Time Devourer, the result of the defeated Lavos assimilating Schala in the darkness beyond time. Using the eponymous Chrono Cross, Serge successfully separated Schala from Lavos and destroyed the parasite once and for all. | While the natural dreamstone is a substance responsible for the first evolution of human beings from animal apes to sentient creatures, it is revealed in Chrono Cross that Lavos is responsible for the creation and advancement of the actual modern human species. “ | Amazing... It possesses the DNA of every organism that has ever dwelt this planet! | „ |
~ Robo in reaction to seeing Lavos' body |
“ | Now I understand. It lives on a planet for as long as possible, selecting the most desirable life forms, allowing them to advance and then harvesting their DNA. The young it gave birth to on Death Peak must have all of that DNA. Evenrtually they'll migrate to other planets, and repeat the cycle. It's a parasite! Sleeping within the earth all this time, stealing all our progress! | „ |
~ Lucca after witnessing Lavos' core and learning the truth |
“ | Let all that was once fade into oblivion! I welcome the end of existence. Embrace your destruction! It is inevitable! | „ |
~ Schala corrupted talking through Dream Devourer Lavos |
“ | It is no doubt but a matter of time before Lavos consumes the whole of my awareness. It was I, after all, who wished it—wished from the depths of my sadness and despair that all that was would be erased. The strength you wield now cannot free me. No, perhaps it is better said that no strength can. So as long as you lean upon the crutch of power, this world's sorrow can know no true end. Return to your own time now. Dwell not on this. Janus… thank you. But I am the girl I was no more. Live, and be strong. Farewell.... | „ |
~ Schala fused with Lavos to Magus |
“ | In order to survive, all living things in this world, fight desperately and devour those they defeat... Must one kill other living things in order to survive? Must one destroy another world in order to allow one's own world to continue? The wounded in turn wound and torment those weaker than they themselves are. There are only the killers and the killed... The sinners who are judged, and the victims that do the judging... What meaning is there to such a world? | „ |
~ Lavos speaking through the Frozen Flame and Dragon God |
Background
Lavos is the final boss of Chrono Trigger, an alien parasite which crash-landed in the year 65,000,000 BC It was named "Lavos" by Ayla, a word she made up from the root words "La" meaning "fire" and "Vos" "big" in the Iokan language.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Lavos’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Lavos has three different forms. The first form is the outer shell, which resembles the Peluda, a mythical beast in French mythology. The second form consists of a large humanoid form with two arms. The third and final form is Lavos Core, consisting of three parts: a humanoid center, and two floating 'bits'. Apparently, the absolute core of Lavos is one of these bits, since it can revive its other parts and destroying it defeats Lavos. |

All previous powers and abilities to a far greater extent, Higher-Dimensional Existence (Resides in the border beyond time’s eclipse otherwise known as the Darkness Beyond Time, a higher dimension beyond the regular multiverse where there is no beginning or end), Immortality (Type 5. Is a non-existent entity unbound by life and death), Regeneration (Mid-Godly. Came back from the non-existent state after being erased along with the future timeline becoming the Dream Devourer), Enhanced Time Manipulation (It’s mere entrance into the timeline overloaded the day of lavos causeing time distortions that created dimensional vortexes from alternate universes appear in the main timeline. Can inflict the stop status effect), Enhanced Irreversible Damage (Lavos killed & absorbed the avatar of the Dragon God killing it’s true form in the process. Thus even avatars of facets of oneself can not protect their true form from Lavos), Enhanced Conceptual Manipulation, Truth Manipulation Memory Manipulation & Morality Manipulation (Feasts upon thoughts, dreams, and memories, it is stated by Schala that dreams make up all of existence, with nightmares being beings that make up no form or substance, being completely incapable of being interacted with, even by characters that can interact with incorporeal enemies. Queen Zeal even notes all forms are an extension and are made up of dreams. Along with concepts such as truth existing within dreams. Schala states Lavos will consume the whole of her awareness, to where she wishes for the destruction of all of existence), Dream Manipulation (Devourers dreams from an alternate dimension), Enhanced Power Absorption (It's an insta-Counter to any physical/non-magical/energy attack. Drains all the magical energy from the target. When it changes phase as seen here it passively absorbs all Magic and Energy attacks as well as usable elements in the game, which include Light, Lightning, Dark, Fire and Water - so they heal it instead of damaging. Would've absorbed Serge along with the Chrono Cross if not stopped), Gravity Manipulation (With Gravity Sphere), Law Manipulation & Existence Erasure (Type 4. During the adventure of Chrono Cross Lavos has made it where if Serge at all dies he will be completely erased, not even being allowed to be born within reality, along with having FATE join his side. FATE used it’s powers to erase a nonexistent timeline beyond the dimensions), Sealing (Schala can send someone back in time and seal away the ability to enter back to said time period), Magnetism Manipulation & Weather Manipulation (Schala attempting to cross into another dimension caused a massive magnetic storm that shut off FATE)
All previous powers and abilities to a far greater extent, Enhanced Space-Time Manipulation & BFR (The Dragon God is an extension of Lavos who can send one through different pocket dimensions or timelines during the fight), The Dragon God is innately all elements thus can swap itself to any element, Light Manipulation (Harle is a dragon god and thus an extension of Lavos, giving him her ability to create moon light beams, moon shine uses lunar energy in order to create a shield that defends everyone), Cosmic Energy Manipulation (With Lunairetic, Harle will swing her right arm across her chest once, raising herself up into the air. While floating in mid-air, she swivels round to face a crimson-colored moon, with a shadow slowly passing over it. When the moon is completely obscured by this shadow, a lunar eclipse is formed, which blurs out and disappears. The camera will then shift its focus onto the enemies, whereupon the eclipse is observed to form on the ground they are standing on. As the eclipse fades away, thick swirls of light engulf the foes, forming rainbows as the light is reflected in different directions. As the colorful light fades away, a scaly orb is observed to collect the foes into its middle. Purple-colored rings of light are observed to rush continuously into the middle of the orb, until the orb explodes in a vein of black-colored lines against a white-colored backdrop. The field then reverts back to normal, whereupon the foes are dropped from the sky and sustain damage accordingly, along with inflicting any status types onto its targets), Dimensional Travel & Lower Dimensional Manipulation (Harle is able to enter into the temporal vortex and is the only way for Serge to escape the temporal vortex as she knows how to leave and enter said space), Creation (The Six Dragon Gods in their weakened state created Harle), Resistance to Elemental Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Holy Manipulation, Life Manipulation, Fire Manipulation, Magma Manipulation, Ice Manipulation, Water Manipulation, Plant Manipulation, Electricity Manipulation, Earth Manipulation (Characters naturally resist their own elements, with the Dragon God having all 6 innate elements)

- Schala: When Lavos was defeated he was sent to the darkness beyond time where he pulled Schala into to fuse with her becoming the Dream Devourer and eventually the Time Devourer.
Intelligence: Cosmic (Despite Lavos animalistic tendencies, it is an extremely intelligent parasite, being the very reason for evolution of humanity while also surveying said evolution so it could gain the DNA of all organisms on the planet and evolve into a higher lifeform, all the while it is the creator of elements in Chrono Trigger. As the Frozen Flame is a piece of Lavos, he has a complete perspective of the infinite timelines of the multiverse, perceiving every time period and alternate selves there are. Lavos has shown himself being capable of looking throughout time and perfectly replicating attacks and futuristic technology before it even existed. Knew about Crono and co.’s plan to defeat him and counter acted with a back up plan)
Standard Tactics:
Lavos mere awakening causes people to be temporally BFR’d or to fight it in it’s own pocket dimension. It will also attempt to absorb or unify with the opponent, if it’s incapable of doing this, Lavos will survey through all time points and attempt to mimic bosses that it feel will be a threat to the opponent, if this fails it will proceed with it’s own moveset, spamming rains of destruction along with various status effect moves, if it’s defeated one will need to go within it to fight it’s body, who spams explosion moves, if the body is defeated it must fight the core who will pull one through time attempting to absorb them in it with them and strengthening it’s stats through the different time periods. If defeated it will go to the darkness beyond time where it will either return or fuse with Schala becoming the Dream Devourer
Dream Devourer instantly opens up with devouring dreams from an alternate dimension and will attempt to absorb the opponent. If attacked it passively drains MP or HP. It also wishes to destroy all of existence so it will lead with complete destruction.
The Time Devourer will have the Dragon God fight for it first where the Dragon God will be using all of it’s elements and swapping between different timelines and changing it’s innate element, if it’s defeated then one must journey beyond time and space to face Time Devourer Lavos where he will use the strongest element attacks such as Omega Green. The Time Devourer’s wish is to also erase everything so it will lead with this too.
Weaknesses: The people he mimics he also share their weaknesses. If Schala is removed from Lavos and then all of the multiverse is conceptually merged then Lavos will be defeated once and for all incapable of coming back.
Key: Lavos | Dream Devourer | Time Devourer | Absorbing the Chrono Cross
Note: There has been some questioning on the validity of whether Lavos summoned alternate versions of himself or just revived parts of himself as the official bs Chrono Trigger character library notes the pod on the right as the "true form" of Lavos along with his ability to to revive parts of him being shown during his first phase. However this misses some key points regarding the way he revives the pods back. The way he revives his helpers is them simply coming back from nothing and continuing the fight, however the way Lavos "revives" the pods is opening up a time gate bringing them back, along with this the entire fight is based off the center shifting through time itself, with this what "Lavos true form" moreso likely means is that this is the true Lavos of the timeline and the others are alternative timeline Lavos'.
Note 2: Lavos' rains of destruction feat that reaches across the entire planet isn't considered High 6-A as the feat no only didn't life wipe as there's humans still around but also, 2300 A. D. shows a lot of the planet wasn't destroyed in the conventional sense. A lot of vehicles and technology still work and the overall landscape while very bleak, isn't fully destroyed, thus there's no way to say he significantly affected the overall planet enough to warrant a High 6-A rating.
Note 3: There has also been questioning on Lavos creating the time gates due to a scene where Robo makes note that he thinks them saying Lavos creating the time gates is wrong, this is however contradicted by the scene of Lavos landing and a time gate appearing from where he landed and a time gate existing in him, along with this it's a purely theoretical idea posed by Robo never further expanded upon while Lavos has tangible evidence and has full control over space-time. Thus we have disregarded Robo's statement.
