Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[30], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[31]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[32]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[33]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[34]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[35]. With their souls being completely free from time[36]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[37]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[38]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[39], becoming stronger when it's night time[40]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[41] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[42]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[43]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[44]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[45], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[46], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[47]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[48]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[49]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[50]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[51], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[52]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[53]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[54]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[55], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[56], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[57], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[58]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[59]. With the real world and world of grimoires being one and the same[60], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[61]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[62]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[63]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[64]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[65]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[66]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[67], with their souls being completely free from time[68]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[69], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[70]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[71]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[72], with their souls being completely free from time[73], with fate being a truth wound by time[74])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Weapon Mastery (Whip Mastery; Can use a giant whip to attack enemies from far away[75]. Unique Weaponry; Frankenstein can use his own chains as weapons[76]. Hammer Mastery; Can wield a giant hammer in combat[77]), Spin Dash (Can roll and spin around as an attack[78]), Body Control & Penetration Damage (Physical Penetration; His body is outfitted with a hidden minigun comparment under his left arm[79]), Explosion Manipulation (His body is outfittd with a hidden missile launcher[80]), Vibration Manipulation (Can cause entire rooms to vibrate and shake just from hitting the wall and from stomping the floor[81]. Can cause entire rooms to vibrate and shake just from jumping[82]), Electricity Manipulation (Can charge the electricity from his body to shoot out lightning[83]. Has electricirty naturally around his body[84]. Can punch the ground to cause a long electricity wave[85]. Can shoot electricity out of his hands[86]. Can shoot out a giant electricity orb[87])

Equipment

  • Chains: As The Creature is commonly chained up, he can rip from his chains and use them as weapons against others.
  • Hammer: A giant hammer The Creature wields in Symphony of the Night against 1700s Alucard.
  • Whip: A giant whip that The Creature Wields in Castlevania: Bloodlines against John Morris & Eric Lecarde, he can use it to block projectiles and attack from a distance.

Notable Techniques

  • Debris Avalanche: The Creature stomps the ground, causing a cascade of bricks to fall from the ceiling, creating a hazardous rain of debris.
  • Brick Toss: The Creature pulls out a brick and hurls it in an arc toward the opponent, demonstrating his strength and accuracy.
  • Relentless March: The Creature steadily marches across the room, only pausing to execute his attacks, showcasing his persistence and intimidation.

  • Electric Sphere: The Creature summons a sphere of electric energy that can be used to strike at the player.
  • Electric Current: The Creature generates an electric current that slides along the ground, which can be a hazard for the player.
  • Combination Attack: The Creature may use both the electric sphere and the electric current at the same time, intensifying the danger.

  • Igor's Support: Igor, The Creature's hunchbacked partner, is invincible but can be stunned briefly with attacks. Igor moves unpredictably across the arena, launching fireballs at the player while The Creature attacks from the background. Players must carefully manage their positioning to avoid being overwhelmed by Igor’s movements.
  • Relentless Fireball Assault: Igor continuously hops around the room, periodically launching fireballs that track the player's position. These projectiles can trap players in tight spaces, making evasion crucial.
  • Platform Control: The Creature typically remains near the right side of the screen, forcing players to utilize the platforms for mobility and to avoid getting cornered. Strategic use of the platforms can help the player maintain distance and gain openings for attacks.

  • Chain Swing: Chained to the far-left wall, The Creature can swing his chains to attack the player if they come too close. This serves as a defensive maneuver to knock the player away.
  • Falling Debris: The Creature strikes the back wall, causing boulders to fall from the ceiling. These can be destroyed, but they require several hits, making evasion the safer strategy in most cases.
  • Hunchback Interference: If the Hunchbacks from the previous area are not eliminated beforehand, they will follow the player into the fight, adding an extra layer of difficulty by attacking during the battle.

  • Chain Swing: Still chained to the far-left wall, The Creature can swing his chains to attack the player if they get too close, knocking them back.
  • Falling Debris: The Creature causes additional debris to fall from the ceiling more frequently. These boulders can still be destroyed, but dodging is often more effective.
  • Hunchback Reinforcements: Hunchbacks will spawn periodically during the fight, adding to the challenge by attacking the player.
  • Power Surge: A skeleton on the right desk acts as a proxy for Dr. Frankenstein. It reanimates intermittently to activate the power switch, allowing The Creature to move freely to the right end of the room.

  • Pink Flask: The Creature throws various flasks at the player, with the pink one causing a small flame to appear on the floor. If Simon is standing on a platform, this can be safely ignored, as Simon can destroy the flask by hitting it before the effect is triggered.
  • Green Flask: When thrown, this flask bursts mid-air, releasing flames that fall to the floor. Since it explodes in the air, the player cannot block the attack, making this flask particularly dangerous.
  • Gray Flask: When the gray flask hits the floor, a duplicate of the Creature is summoned. Both the real Creature and the copy will move around, with the real one not throwing any more flasks. The copy can be destroyed to end the process. The flask can also be destroyed by the player before it activates.

Choke Hold

Franken grabs the player in a choke hold. If the player fails to break free, this attack can quickly lead to death.

Electric Blast

Franken generates an electric blast from his hands, which he then launches at the player.

Jump Stomp

Franken jumps and stomps the ground, causing debris to fall. This attack is similar to one seen in Dracula's Curse, though it lacks the preceding jump.

  • Hammer Slam: The Creature slams its hammer into the ground, aiming for the player.
  • Rolling Attack: The Creature curls into a ball and rolls around the perimeter of the room, using slopes to roll onto walls and ceilings for increased speed. The machinery and tubing make jumping over it more difficult.

  • Electric Strike: Franken strikes the floor with his fist, sending a jolt of electricity that travels across the screen.
  • Chain Swing: Franken swings a long chain wrapped around his wrist.

  • Grabbing-Choke Hold: The Creature grabs the player in a choke hold, potentially leading to death if the player cannot escape.
  • Clenched Dual-Fisted Attack: The Creature performs a series of lightning bolts with his clenched fists instead of a beam.
  • Diagonal Leap: The Creature leaps diagonally into the air and crashes down hard on the player, with quick reaction time to catch the player in midair if they try to jump over him.
  • Heat-Seeking Missile: The Creature launches a powerful heat-seeking missile from his elbow's mounted turret, dealing heavy damage.
  • Machine Gun Barrage: The Creature fires a barrage of machine gun bullets from his elbow's turret, dealing light damage. The bullets can be destroyed.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse:
    • The Creature enters from the left side of the screen and moves back and forth across the floor.
    • It stomps the ground, causing an avalanche of bricks to fall from the ceiling.
    • If the falling debris misses, the Creature will throw a stone block at the player in an arced path.
  • Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth:
    • The Creature summons a sphere of electric energy.
    • It generates an electric current that slides along the ground.
    • It can use both attacks simultaneously.
  • Castlevania
    • NES:
      • The Creature's head detaches from its neck and flies around the room.
      • Snakes grow from the Creature’s hair and slither along the floor, attempting to bite the player.
      • The Creature attacks by summoning snakes and using them as projectiles.
      • The head flies around while the snakes attack in various patterns.
    • Haunted Castle:
      • Frankenstein strikes the back wall, causing large boulders to fall from the ceiling.
      • He brandishes chains to attack the player, swinging them when the player gets too close.
      • Hunchbacks from the previous screen may join the fight if not dealt with beforehand.
    • Haunted Castle Revisited:
      • The Creature remains chained to the wall, but causes more debris to fall from above.
      • Hunchbacks spawn periodically during the fight.
      • A reanimated skeleton on the right desk activates the power switch, allowing the Creature to move to the right; attacking the skeleton stops the power, retracting the chains and pulling the Creature back to the left wall.
    • Super Castlevania IV:
      • The Creature moves back and forth across the room.
      • Throws chemical flasks:
        • Pink flask: Creates a small flame on the floor; can be destroyed if hit before activation.
        • Green flask: Explodes in mid-air, causing flames to fall; cannot be blocked.
        • Gray flask: Spawns a copy of the Creature when it hits the floor; the copy must be destroyed to end the process.
    • Castlevania Chronicles:
      • Frankenstein's Monster is revived by electricity bolts from a machine.
      • Slowly marches toward the player while swinging a chain.
      • Occasionally stops to perform a dash attack.
      • The environment layout allows the player to avoid fighting him, such as by climbing stairs to get above and run away.
  • Castlevania: Rondo of Blood:
    • Franken has three methods of attack which he'll pull off in a random fashion with little to no warning:
      • Grabs the player in a choke hold that, if they don't manage to shake free, can quickly lead to death.
      • Generates an electric blast from his hands which he then launches at the player.
      • Jumps and stomps on the ground, causing debris to come crashing down.
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night:
    • Creature has a sledgehammer as its primary weapon.
    • Slams the hammer into the ground.
    • Rolls into a ball, using the room’s slopes to increase speed and roll on walls and ceilings.
    • When kneeling, it rolls across the floor, hitting walls and then reversing direction.
    • The Creature can be damaged while attacking or standing.
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines:
    • Frankenstein is encountered midway through The Munitions Factory as a sub-boss.
    • Strikes the floor to produce a lightning bolt that travels across the screen.
    • Swings a long chain wrapped around his wrist.
    • Does not wander much in this title.
    • When he swings the chain, jump away. When he releases it straight, crouch. When he unleashes the lightning bolt, jump to the platform on the left.
  • Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin:

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • The Creature is based on the monster created by Dr. Victor Henry Frankenstein from the classic horror tale Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. The monster is often mistakenly called "Frankenstein", although her name for the Creature, though not used in the novel, was "Adam", in reference to the Biblical "first man".
    • However, Frankenstein is a last name and as Victor Frankenstein created Adam, he would be his surrogate father, thus The Creature's full name would be Adam Frankenstein, thus Frankenstein would technically by all means be apart of his name.
    • Another contradiction from the original creature is that the monster is given an ugly, grotesque image, however the original creature was tall, handsome, and beautiful with the only issue being that his eyes looked weird.
  • Up until Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the Creature was generally referred to as "Frankenstein" within the games. In most Japanese titles, it was called "Franken" instead (or slight variations of it).
    • This has been a common misconception that is not limited to the Castlevania series, but probably since the character's introduction into pop culture media. However, the name "Frankenstein" is actually the surname of its creator, Victor Frankenstein. In the novel, the monster is never given a name and is instead called by different monikers, including "creature", "fiend", "spectre", "demon", "wretch", "devil", "thing", "being", "ogre", and most properly, "Frankenstein's monster".
  • The Frankenstein Monster sprite from Vampire Killer features the iconic screws on the neck; however, all other sprites from the different versions of the original Castlevania –which share the same or similar sprites– don't have these screws.
    • On a related note, most incarnations of the Creature along the Castlevania series and its spin-offs don't feature the screws at all. It is unknown if this was due to different artistic approaches or just for detail limitations (some people even speculate it could have been to avoid potential copyright issues with the Universal films specific depiction of the character).
    • A few games depict the monster with the screws on the forehead instead, these include: Kid Dracula (both the NES/Famicom and Game Boy version), Symphony of the Night, Circle of the Moon, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    • While in Portrait of Ruin, the Creature uses the same sprite from Rondo of Blood, the screws on his neck were edited out for unknown reasons.
  • The Creature's overall appearance was reused for a few other enemies in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, including Enkidu, Rebuild, and a gigantic boss version of it named Goliath.
  • The Creature makes a brief appearance in the 1993 Konami arcade game Quiz Gakumon no Susume.

Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it. Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.
