| | In order to defeat Giygas, who is attacking from the past, you must warp to the past. This can be done by way of the "Phase Distorter 3". However, the machine cannot warp living beings, I mean lifeforms. Life is demolished in the process of warping. The only way to accomplish the time travel is to transfer your brain "program" into a robot, and send the robot to the past. ...The transfer means that your spirit will go with the robot, while your body is left behind. I cannot promise that your spirit will come back after the battle in the past. Yet, you must understand that the four of you are the chosen ones. Do you still wish to face Giygas by travelling to the past? |

| At the beginning of Earthbound, Ness is awoken from a sound sleep by the impact of the meteorite north of his house in Onett. His mother and sister are agitated, but Ness leaves to find out what happened. After meeting up with Lier X. Agerate and Pokey Minch, he returns home and tries to get back to sleep. Soon thereafter, Pokey arrives and demands that Ness help him look for his little brother, who has gone missing during the calamity surrounding the impact. | | At the beginning of the game, Ness is awoken from a sound sleep by the impact of the meteorite north of his house in Onett. | After a pep-talk from his mother, Ness, Pokey and King go back out to the hillside, where they find Picky (who reveals it was Pokey who actually ran away). They also encounter Buzz-Buzz, an insectoid warrior who has returned from the future to warn Ness of the threat that Giygas poses to the universe. It is from Buzz-Buzz that Ness learns of the prophecy surrounding his future; that he, along with the help of two other boys and one girl, will stand against Giygas and save the universe from total annihilation. | | After a pep-talk from his mother, Ness, Porky and King go back out to the hillside, where they find Picky (who reveals it was Porky who actually ran away). Despite this certain limitation, Ness is capable of affecting Giygas with his PSI, who had already conceptually erased his own mind due to his sheer power), Elemental Manipulation (Through various elemental PSI), Fire Manipulation (PK Fire), Heat Manipulation and Air Manipulation (PK Freeze), Electricity Manipulation (PK Thunder), Earth Manipulation (PK Ground), Darkness Manipulation (PSI Darkness), Illusion Creation (Type 3. Should be able to produce a psychic illusion comparable to if not superior to that of the Mani Mani Statue), Danmaku (PK Starstorm), Power Nullification (PSI Block. Should be comparable to enemies who can emit pale green light, which removes the effects of PSI such as shields and stat buffs), Statistics Amplification (Offense Up, Defense Up, and Quick Up), Statistics Reduction (Offense Down and Defense Down), Status Effect Inducement (Paralysis, Confusion, Uncontrollably Crying, Instant Death, Sleep Manipulation, Poison, and Blindness), Dimensional Travel (4th-D Slip), Transformation and Power Mimicry (Should be able to use Poo's Mirror ability), Flight (Should be comparable to Poo, who was able to swoop down from the sky and end the party's battle with Master Barf), and Enhanced Telepathy (Should be comparable to Paula, who can use her Pray ability to call upon the Player in desperate situations), should also have Information Analysis (Due to his omniscience he should know how to use Jeff's Spy ability which lets him reveal the stats and weaknesses of a target, as well as what item they may be carrying), Durability Negation and One Hit Kill (PK Fire and Beam at higher levels can instantly kill foes. PK Freeze can reduce foes to a critical condition, or in gameplay terms "1 HP") Time Stop and Transmutation (Should have the abilities of some enemies due to them being gifted their powers by Giygas's PSI. The Dali's Clock is able to briefly freeze a target in time as it attacks them and several enemies are able to diamondize a target, usually through an eerie glare)
| | *ATM Card: An ATM card that allows Ness to deposit and withdraw money from an ATM. Ness's bank reserves can hold up to $9,999,999. |
| <br>
| | *Sound Stone: A special stone given to Ness by Buzz Buzz. Its primary use was to record the eight melodies of the Earth and play them back for Ness to create his Magicant. Upon awakening, the Sound Stone disappears from Ness's inventory. |
| <br>
| | *Bicycle: A bicycle rented from the bike shop in Twoson. It allows Ness to travel much faster, though he can only ride it if there are no other party members. |
| Resistances: Void Manipulation, Absorption, Soul Erasure, Existence Erasure (Type 5) and Darkness Manipulation (Could fight inside of Giygas and endure his attacks), Unholy Manipulation (Able to exist in Giygas’s presence, a being who embodies evil itself), Enhanced Resistance to Mind Manipulation, Morality Manipulation, Fear Manipulation, Hell Manipulation, Empathic Manipulation, Madness Manipulation (Type 2), and Corruption (Type 3) (Completely immune to Giygas's influence), Fire Manipulation, Heat Manipulation and Air Manipulation, Electricity Manipulation, Energy Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Status Effect Inducement (Sleep, Instant Death, Paralysis, Confusion, Blindness, Transmutation and Uncontrollable crying), Radiation Manipulation, Disease Manipulation, Earth Manipulation, Statistics Reduction, Power Nullification (Including the removal of shields, PSI, Buffs and Debuffs), Durability Negation and One Hit Kill, Space-Time Manipulation, Conceptual Manipulation (Immensely superior to Giygas's original form in EarthBound Beginnings who could completely resist all PSI, including PK Fire and PK Freeze which can negate durability in that game at certain levels. Should theoretically resist many PSI abilities due to possessing the ultimate intelligence and the fact that PSI resistant items are a part of him, along with scaling to the Absolutely Safe Capsule) | |

| Intelligence: Genius (Despite appearing as a silent protagonist with little information surrounding him, Ness is a bright, compassionate, strong and determined child that has been acknowledged by many others in the series, even by the TOTU. Even from the beginning of the game, he was willing enough to go out and investigate a meteor that had crash landed in his town. Understood Buzz Buzz's warning about Giygas and his own Destiny, and took up the job without any retaliation. His courage and mental resistances is exceptionally high to such a degree that it can resist Giygas’s influences. Is the leader of the chosen four, having extraordinary navigation, leadership, and communication skills, never getting lost or having doubts traveling around the planet (aside from Homesickness, but eventually got over it) and while still keeping a calm, courageous and optimistic look despite the negativity that surrounds his world or any dire situation he may be in. Able to navigate through a large illusion world with its own set rules of "Yes" meaning "No" and "No" meaning "Yes". Poo remarks how well Ness is able to use PSI without any training, in which he has no trouble executing complex Psychic attacks. One of them includes a powerful psychokinetic wave ability that only he and Giygas knows how to use. It should be noted that Intelligence roughly correlates to the power of PSI. This can be shown by Giygas's race who are Super Geniuses that possesses PSI abilities beyond human comprehension. Despite his nature and inexperience look, Ness is surprisingly a noteworthy tactician in battle; having been able to outwit gang leaders, police officers, an entire cult dedicated to turning the world blue, corrupted mayors with the entire city on their own side, and geniuses such as the Starmen and other advanced enemies in combat. By the time he created Magicant, the realm of his mind, Ness was capable of entering The Sea of Eden, which only those who are "truly ready" are able to enter in. The Sea of eden is said to be filled with "Ultimate Intelligence" and where the Truth of the Universe can be interacted with. When Ness defeated the evil part of his mind, he then learned of his true self, who is the Universe and soon reached out deep within his mind, truly realizing his purpose and destiny). Nigh-Omniscient after awakening his true power (Gained the power of the Sea of Eden, which was described as the Supreme intelligence and Truth of the Universe. His true form is the Universe and exist throughout Time-Space. Told his avatar what's to come in the future, even being completely aware of the Apple of Enlightenment and its prediction and telling him to meet up at Saturn Valley as he and his friends would get something new there. Is an aspect of the Truth of the Universe and absorbed a part of it to himself)

Their astral forms are unable to interact with anything, where it's shown characters like Jeff being unconscious makes him unable to fix broken items as his conscious physical body is not there. |

|
| * Mirror: The user concentrates and turns into a targeted enemy. Does not work on some enemies.</tabber> | | ==Note== |
| | *Despite overlapping the universe with his consciousness, we cannot assign him 2-C as such a tier would require all of his attacks to have an energy output equivalent to the energy of the entire universe, which is not logically consistent with what is shown in game. Due to his only source of scaling, Giygas, having an unquantifiable level of power as well as the fact that the power he absorbed from the Earth cannot be properly quantified either, he is simply listed as Unknown. |
| | *There is some conflict over whether or not MOTHER cast actually become genuine ghost or not, as the games at time makes mention that the characters are just unconscious along with the resurrection system in the game requires going to the hospital where they note the person has been unconscious in there, and thus some write it off as the ghost are not actually there but sprite place ins. However, the ghost sprites are acknowledged by NPCs, with the mouse in the department store noting he has an eerie feeling that a ghost is walking with the party whenever unconscious party members are around, Paula's dad can sense her presence in the room when she's unconscious, and Poo directly notes he's communicating with Ness' soul if he comes to the party while Ness is unconscious. With this in mind, it is accepted the characters create an astral projection to keep observing the party on their journey while they are unconscious in the hospital. This is further supported with the MOTHER 2 cast being able to have their souls leave their bodies. In MOTHER 3 this does not exist as there's rarely hospitals around so they are just unconscious on the floor with the head party member dragging them around. |

| | |- |
| | | |
| | *Because of their similar appearances, many fans consider Ness and Ninten to be the same characters, though it has been directly confirmed that they are different due to their roles in the narrative of the series and the fact that they are treated as different characters in the Super Smash Bros. series. Even though Ninten and Ness share many similarities, they have several differing qualities, mainly being visible in their official clay models. In terms of appearance, the brim of Ninten's cap is pointed to the left of his head, whereas Ness's points to the right, Ninten's forelocks have a spiky look, while Ness's are more rounded, and while Ninten has red socks and blue shoes, Ness instead wears white socks and red shoes. Ness additionally carries around a backpack, whereas Ninten does not. It appears Ness's resemblance to Ninten was left as ambiguous by Shigesato Itoi intentionally, as he intended for players to decide if they're the same character or different, and he seems to have even suggested for players to think of them as the same. |
| | *Ness's alternate "Don't Care" names are Alec, Roger, Will, Brian, Tyler, and Lane. In the original release of MOTHER 2, the alternate names are Hat, Takuya, John, Sarumaru, Mario, and Chinchin. |
| | **John being one of Ness's "Don't Care" names in MOTHER 2 is a reference to John lennon of the The Beatles, with the rest of the characters the player is able to name having "Don't Care" names for the other members of the band, as well as Yoko Ono, John Lennon's wife. |
| | **Mario being one of Ness's "Don't Care" names in MOTHER 2 is a reference to the Mario series, with the rest of the "Don't Care" options for the things the player is able to name including references to pieces of the Mario series. |
| | *Ness's favorite food is Steak. There are several other foods that Ness may like from his "Don't Care" options, including Pie, Pasta, Cake, Eggs, Bread, and Salmon. In the original release of MOTHER 2, Ness's favorite food options include salisbury steak, sukiyaki, mori soba, honey pie, banana, mushrooms, and dog food. |
| | *The alternate "Don't Care" names for PK Rockin are Hammer, Love, Gifts, Slime, Gaming, and Boxing. Interestingly, Love would later become the signature PSI move of Lucas, the protagonist of MOTHER 3. |
| | *In the commercial for EarthBound, Ness's name was spelled as "NessA". |
| | *Early footage of the Nintendo 64 build of MOTHER 3 shows a character resembling Ness riding a Pork Bean and walking through a forest. |
| | *In the Super Smash Bros. series, Ness is voiced by Makiko Ōmoto, who also voices Kirby. |
| | *During the development of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ness was intended to be removed and replaced by Lucas. However, due to the numerous delays and the cancellation of the Nintendo 64 build of MOTHER 3, Ness was kept in the game. Ever since this decision, there has been an unspoken rule in which all 12 members of the original Super Smash Bros. must be in every game in the series. Thus far, Ness has appeared in every single Smash game. |
| | *In the MOTHER-inspired RPG, Citizens of Earth, a message in the Police Station can be read alerting units to a "spiteful youth" who was seen "beating crows with a cracked bat", a reference to the beginning portion in MOTHER 2 |
| | *The ESP copy ability in the Kirby series references Ness. In addition to wielding psychic powers like Ness, Kirby also wears a hat similar to the former's. It is further referenced by the Ness and Lucas amiibo giving Kirby this copy ability. |
