Background

Ninten (named Ken in the novelization) is the main character and protagonist of MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings), the first game of the MOTHER series (localized as EarthBound series). He lives together with his mother, his sisters and his dog in a house in the northern outskirts of Mother's Day.

Ninten's name is derived from the first six letters of Nintendo. Ninten's primary choice of weapons are baseball bats, and occasionally the slingshot and boomerang. He is uniquely the only character capable of using PSI abilities to not learn any offensive PSI attacks, instead his PSI abilities mainly specialize in support and providing stat buffs to the main party.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ninten’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

The game starts off with Ninten's home being invading by a poltergeist. Several inanimate objects are brought to life during the paranormal phenomenon, including lamps and one of Ninten's sisters' dolls. After defeating the doll, he finds a music box inside of it, which starts to play a melody, whose significance is left ambiguous, but still is memorized by him. After the event is over and the poltergeist has disappeared, Ninten gets a call from his father, who vaguely expresses that it is time for Ninten to go on "a little adventure" in order to explore the potential of his powers. He also tells Ninten that there is something in the house's basement that might assist him during his journey, although he has forgotten where he put the key that is needed in order to make it accessible. After Ninten has retrieved the key from his dog and obtained his great-grandfather's diary from the basement, he initiates his journey by heading to the closest town, Mother's Day.

On the way there, Ninten spots a woman in panic in front of her home. Asking what is wrong, the woman tells him that her daughter, Pippi, has gone missing. He continues into town and learns that several odd occurrences have struck the settlement; poltergeists intruding people's homes, zombies roaming around in the town, animals that are running amok in the town's zoo, and a girl who is lost somewhere in the cemetery. After talking to the mayor of Mother's Day, he implores Ninten to rescue the missing girl. Ninten eventually finds her in a casket deep inside of the cemetery. Pippi shows a liking to her rescuer, giving him a Franklin Badge if he acknowledges his bravery and modesty. Going back into town and leaving Pippi in the hands of the mayor, Ninten and Pippi part ways. The mayor then requests him to go the zoo, hoping that he will take care of the issues occurring there.

Before heading to the zoo however, Ninten takes a stop at the town's department store. When going to the top floor he is informed that all the animals but a canary chick have escaped from the store. The salesman tries to sell Ninten the chick for $85, but if refused, it will be received for free. The chick is taken to Canary Village to have it returned to its mother. The mother, named Laura, ecstatic about her returned chick, sings another melody that Ninten memorizes, being the second one. He then continues on to the zoo.

When entering the Choucream Zoo, Ninten will encounter many hostile animals and walk in a snake-like pattern before reaching the Superintendent's Office in the eastern portion of the zoo. Here, he will engage a battle with Starman Jr. after examining a capsule-like object on the building's top floor. When it has been defeated, the odd sound that is revealed to be the reason for the animals' strange behavior disappears, turning the zoo into its original state again. Within one of the zoo's fences resides a monkey, who sings the third melody when a sign attached to the fence is read.

Even though no reward will be given from the mayor for the deed, a cave to the east of the zoo will become accessible. Inside of the cave, Ninten will come across a strange rock-like object, that telepathically will ask him a vague riddle-like question. When he finds a corresponding answer in his great-grandfather's diary, and then says it out loud, he will be transported to the mysterious land of Magicant. Upon entering a castle in the northern portion of Magicant, Ninten will meet the the governing figure of the land, Queen Mary. She requests him to retrieve the eight notes of a song, which she herself has forgotten, and then return to sing it for her. Ninten then exits Magicant through an underground maze, and is sent to another rock-like object located inside of a cave.

After exiting the cave, he discovers that he has been teleported to the outskirts of Thanksgiving. Inside of the town's elementary school, Ninten meets a boy hiding in a trash can on the school's roof. He refuses to come out of the bin, fearing that the other students will continue to pick on him, but eventually gathers enough courage to leave the bin, and then introduces himself as Lloyd, followed by him saying that he would like to fly a Bottle Rocket. In a factory to the south, Ninten manages to find a Bottle Rocket, being located in a trash can, which he picks up. When shown to Lloyd, he becomes excited for finally having a Bottle Rocket in his possession, and thereafter leads Ninten to the school's lab, and does after a failed experiment, involving the Bottle Rocket, join Ninten on his journey.

The duo heads to Duncan's Factory, where they thanks to Lloyd manages to activate one of the factory's rockets, which they do in order to get rid of the rocks obstructing the way to Union Station. When the station becomes accessible, the two of them take a train to Reindeer, where they meet an old woman, who gives them a hat, believing it to be the property of a girl in Snowman. After showing the hat to a girl named Ana, who lives in a chateau in the eastern portion of Snowman, she will tell Ninten that he is the boy that she has seen in her dreams and who will help her to find her lost mother, and thereafter joins Ninten and Lloyd on their journey.

The three of them take the train to Spookane, which is shown to have been overrun by malevolent animals and alien-like beings upon their arrival. They head to the inhabited portion of the town, where people express worry concerning the current circumstances, not only being concerned about the creatures that have infested the western portion of the town, but also the ghost-like creatures that have assumed control over the house of the Rosemarys. Ninten is entrusted with the key to the house by the mother of Rosemarys, being certain that Ninten will get the place back into normal. Deep inside of the house, Ninten and his friends find a piano that plays by itself, and that plays the fourth melody when checked.

The party returns to Union Station, where they discover that a small portion of the tracks leading to the east are demolished, making it impossible for the train to transport them beyond that point. They do instead make a detour around the cliffs north of the tracks, leading to them ending up in Yucca Desert. In the desert, the party come across a cactus with some facial features. After using Telepathy on it, it will start to sing the fifth melody. To the east of the cactus resides a man, who will let Ninten and his friends borrow his tank once they have obtained ten Ticket Stubs, which can be purchased from him from prices between $5 to $15. After the tank has been obtained, the party heads further to the east, to the Ruins of Desert, whose entrance is guarded by an enormous robot that must be battled in order to enter; the tank must however be sacrificed during the battle with it. The ruins are inhabited by various monkeys and has a maze-like layout; when the party manages to traverse the ruins and reach an entrance leading to a cave with yet another rock-like object, they will yet again be transported to Magicant.

In the Magicant Underground, a sleeping dragon resides, and Ninten should at this point have enough experience to be capable of waking it from its slumber, which will lead to the initiation of a battle. After being defeated, the dragon will reveal the sixth melody, and then go back to sleep. When Ninten exits from the underground this time however, he will be teleported to a new cave, being to the northwest of Youngtown.

Upon entering Youngtown, Ninten and his friends discover that the majority of the adults have been abducted from the town, and all of the children being in panic due to the loss of their parents. After walking around in the town for some time, the party will meet a baby that communicates with them telepathically, and who teaches them how to teleport. The party continues through the swamp to east, where they meet a Pippi, the girl who Ninten rescued in an earlier segment of the game, and who will offer them full stat recovery.

After having traversed through the swamp, the party reaches the city of Ellay, being infamous for the criminal Bla-Bla Gang, whose members can get very hostile after being interacted with. The party purchases a ticket from the city's department store, in order to enter the Live House. There, they are asked to perform onstage, where they get to dance and sing. After the party is done with the performance, the leader of the Bla-Bla Gang, Teddy, approaches them and asks them if they were the ones beating up on his fellow gang members, which is followed by a battle between Ninten and the gang leader. The battle will however break off after a couple of turns, as Teddy gets impressed by Ninten's ability to fight, calling the match a draw. He explains that he seeks vengeance for his dead parents, and kicks off Lloyd from the team, as he thinks of his ability to fight as being poor, taking his place instead.

Ninten, Ana and Teddy head off towards the base of Mt. Itoi, southeast of Ellay. They first go through a confusing maze-like set of caves, and once they have found an exit, they reach a plateau-like portion on the exterior of the mountain, where they must climb the roots of several stumps in order to progress up the mountain. Here, they will fortunately meet a healer, who will heal the entire party. Teddy temporarily leaves Ninten and Ana to themselves, as he has to make a few phone calls. A scene where Ninten and Ana dance together occurs, and ends in Ana confessing her love to Ninten. They are interrupted by Teddy, who tells them that it is time to leave; however, a loud noise appears, followed by the appearance of another gigantic robot, which is engaged in a battle with them. The party is chanceless against the strength of the robot, and faints one by one. Lloyd luckily shows up after the battle, while driving a new tank, and rescues the party by transporting them to the house of a doctor, being located outside of the entrance to Mt. Itoi. Teddy did however suffer more damage from the battle than Ninten and Ana, and is left fatally wounded in the doctor's house, while Lloyd reaccompanies the party.

The party, rejoined by Lloyd, scales the mountain yet again. After they have passed the caves and the first accessible plateau of the mountain, they reach a lake. There is a boat located near the shore, which they board. After cruising around for a while, the party reaches a portion of the lake that is affected by a whirlpool. They are then pulled down in the water by the vortex, and they all end up in a laboratory-like facility. There, they meet a robot named Eve, who is brought to life when feeling the presence of Ninten. It says that it was built by George, Ninten's great-grandfather, in order to protect Ninten. The glass windows of the facility successively break during its speech, and the entire facility ultimately breaks down, washing the entire party ashore.

With Eve in their party, the four of them continues up the peak of Mt. Itoi. When they approach the top plateau of the mountain, the party is attacked by yet another huge robot. Eve gets destroyed by the robot during the battle, however, the explosion is so powerful that the other robot is destroyed along with Eve. When checking the remains of Eve, the seventh melody is played. The party continues on, and eventually reaches the peak of the mountain, where they find what appears to be a gravestone. When examining the stone slab, a crystal appears in front of them, and starts to speak. It reveals that the love of Ninten's great-grandmother, Maria, was scattered in form of melodies, before teaching Ninten the eighth and final melody; the crystal thereafter disappears.

Ninten and his friends head back to Magicant, to show Queen Mary that they have gathered all the eight melodies. When they have sung the melodies, the queen remembers the song and starts to sing it herself. Afterwards, she and the entirety of Magicant are revealed to be illusions created from the consciousness of Maria. The queen disappears, along with Magicant, in order for Maria to join her husband among the dead.

The party is then teleported back to the gravestone at the peak of Mt. Itoi, where a cave that previously was blocked by boulders is located, but now appears to be accessible. They enter the cave and proceed through it to a deeper portion of it, where a huge ship slowly ascends, eventually leading to a battle with Giygas, the entity responsible for all the terrible occurrences throughout the game. He says during the battle that he is thankful to Ninten's family, but that the people of Earth must perish; he does however momentarily seem to offer to spare Ninten's life, which is declined by Ninten. When he has finished the speech, the party starts to sing the eight melodies, being constantly interrupted by Giygas, who tells them to stop, obviously being affected by their singing. He eventually retreats after the song has been sung repeatedly, and promises Ninten that they shall meet each other again, and thereafter flies off with the Mother Ship.

After the defeat of Giygas, the party frees the humans that have been abducted by Giygas, several of whom return to their children in Youngtown. Ninten himself returns to his home in Mother's Day, being greeted by his mother and sisters. He and Ana are confirmed to stay in touch by sending each other letters after the events of the game. Ninten can also be seen resting in the ending, due to the Earth's crisis finally being over.

Just like in Ness’ game over that him dying is all merely a bad dream), Possible Divine Protection (prayers in the MOTHER series are directly noted to be God being with the person[8], with Paula being able to use prayers to have various supernatural effects to happen in the battle with her prayers being used to ultimately defeat Giygas where in the original translation, Paula was praying directly to God[9]. In MOTHER 1 Ninten is told by Ana's father that they will be victorous on their journey and that his prayers will be heard), Save and Load with Ninten's Dad (Can create save points for Ninten, the save point can be anywhere he decides to record Ninten's progress), Information Analysis (Able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent along with their stats. At the end of the game Maria’s conscious is able to help Ninten and co. with the check stat), Accuracy Manipulation (Ninten’s increase of wisdom raises the chance of inflicting status ailments on an enemy, whether from items or certain PSI techniques. Increasing the fight stat increases the odds of the attack landing and of it being a critical hit), Statistics Boost & Rage Power (Capable of increasing his offense through screaming), Damage Boost (With smash attacks, can deal far more damage then he can regularly), Accelerated Development (Battle & Leveling; Physical Stats & Abilities; Naturally gets stronger as he progresses, naturally gaining resistances and abilities through leveling up. Grew to where the Starman became a regular random encounter when he was previously an entire boss), Healing (Fully singing the Eight Melodies fully heals the party, the light of the crystal representing Maria’s conscious will heal Ninten and co.), Non-Standard Interaction (Soul Interaction; Can kill and interact with ghosts. Abstract Interaction; Can physically interact and fight enemies from magicant who are abstract representations and feelings of one’s mind), Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; Through ignoring the Forgotten Man, Ninten makes him disappear, it is noted by a resident of Magicant that he was once well known but everyone forgot him), Empathic Manipulation (Defeating enemies causes them to lose their bloodlust and calm down), Has the potential for: Subjective Reality, Creation, Illusion Creation (Standard Illusions), & Mind Manipulation (Magicant is a universe created entirely from the users own memories[10]. It exists only within the mind of the user and is shaped entirely by their thoughts and desires. Magicant World's are shaped from the users perspective. Maria for example warped her own world to fit her views as a Queen. Ness's Magicant was shaped almost like a Town with stars and planets in the background. Along with that, users of Magicant can create weapons, equipments, healing items, and inhabitants that represent a certain side to their mind (A strong example would be the Flying Men which represents the users own courage). Some inhabitants act as enemies that will attack or serve as either a memory of the users own experience or simple civilians. It's unknown if there is a Sea of Eden in other variations of Magicant, however it is stated by Talah Rama that the Truth makes itself known to humanity with Magicant. Magicant only disappears once the goal of the user has been met. To provide some insight, Maria's goal was to recover from amnesia and remember the melody she sung to Giygas, and Ness's goal was to awaken his full potential by touching the Universal System. The journey has to be a momentous part of the person's life that culminates in an event that causes them to look inward and triggers the ability to access their magicant).

Resistance to Cold Temperatures (Can casually walk around in light clothing while walking around the snow-covered town of Snowman), Disease Manipulation & Zombification (Zombie bites do not affect him), Poison Manipulation (Resists the effects of the stinger), Mind Manipulation (Madness Manipulation; Can resist Giygas’s influence, even while he’s fighting him, whose black clouds appearing over the mountains caused all the townsfolk and its people to go crazy. No matter how much Ninten goes through he keeps a cheerful look on his face throughout his journey. Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sleep Manipulation (Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sense Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, & Paralysis (The more Ninten’s strength raises the less chance he has of being hit with Blindness, Poison and Paralysis), Information Analysis (If Ninten is put into a position where he checks himself there will be no effect), Power Nullification (Can resist PSI Block), Radiation Manipulation, Temperature Manipulation, Air Manipulation & Poison Manipulation (Can endure the Nuclear Reactor Robot’s explosion without suffering any adverse effects, which would include an intense pulse or wave of heat, light, air pressure, and radiation including a lack of oxygen and carbon monoxide poisoning)

Energy Manipulation (PSI is the manipulation of psionic energy, being described as a mysterious and useful power[11]), Telekinesis (PSI Users such as Ninten can use their psi to telekinetically unbend a spoon, along with Ness as an infant being able to telekinetically move his baby bottle), Telepathy (PSI users all naturally share PSI Telepathy, Ninten uses this to be able to read minds and speak to animals, Paula uses it to telepathically call to Ness in her dreams, along with telepathically speak to other members of the Chosen Four from across towns or even continents. The ability seems to be universal to all PSI users as their consciousness no matter their age is fully aware and can speak with people), Limited Power Bestowal (PSI users can give PSI abilities to other PSI users, such as when an infant used their mind to give Ninten PSI Teleport, or when the Chosen Four taught a monkey how to use PSI Teleport).

Resistance to Mind Manipulation (The natural PSI users consciousness is already matured and able to defend against other mental attacks)
Healing & Resurrection (With PSI Lifeup, heals a large amount of health depending on the level of lifeup. With PSI SuperHealing, completely resurrects a dead ally), Sleep Manipulation (With PSI Hypnosis, puts the enemy to sleep), Statistics Amplification (With PSI Defense Up, raises defense, stacking this causes them to take almost no damage from enemy attacks when prior the enemy could deal devastating damage to them. With Quick Up, raises his speed. With PSI Offense Up, raises his offense up), Statistics Reduction (With PSI Defense Down, lowers the defense of an enemy, stacking this lowers their defense considerably to the point that they could easily be defeated when prior they were difficult to defeat), Teleportation (With PSI Teleport, this ability allows Ninten to go wherever he's gone before, even allowing him to leave magicant), Purification (Type 1; With PSI Healing, it negates poison, paralysis, being turned to stone, sleeping, and death), Forcefield Creation & Attack Reflection (With PSIShield and PSI PowerShield. PSIShield halves the damage taken and power shield passively reflects attacks back), Intangibility & Portal Creation (Spatial. With Dimension Slip, Ninten slips into dimensional space to escape from battles, causing him and the party to be unable to be interacted with by enemies)

Statistics Amplification (With coins and rings, raises one's defense), or Statistics Reduction (With bullhorn, can accidentally raise ones stats if you fail to convince them or lower their stats, the Flea Bag can decrease an enemies offense and defense), Fear Manipulation (Passive; With Repel Ring drives away any weak enemies), Attack Reflection (Passive; With the Franklin Badge capable of completely reflecting lightning based attacks back at the enemy. Shown in MOTHER 1 that it can also reflect PK Beam r. It can even reflect attacks from Giygas), Status Effect Inducement (With flashdark, can blind an opponent decreasing their accuracy), OHK (With Insecticide and Super Spray, will instantly kill any arthropod-based enemies), Teleportation (With Onyx Hook, allows Ninten and co. to teleport back to Magicant without the need of finding an entry point. With memory chip, can teleport back to Eve, even if he’s in magicant. This can also help get him out of BFR), Healing (With various food items, can restore health. With antidote, neutralizes poison quickly), Purification (With AsthmaSpray, cures Ninten of his asthma. With Mouthwash, cures Ninten from colds. With Noble Seed, cures Ninten of his confusion), The Last Weapon, tells one how to turn off their NES, With Rope, bounds an enemy making them unable to move or attack.

Trivia

  • Ninten's blood type is officially listed as type A[13].
  • Fans have noted the resemblance between Ness and Ninten in the past. Because of their similar appearances many fans consider them to be the same characters, though it's directly confirmed they're different. Even though Ninten and Ness share many similarities, they have several differing qualities, mainly being visible in their official clay models. The brim of Ninten's cap is pointed to the left of his head, whereas Ness's points to the right, although Ness's brim is directed backwards in his American clay model, being slightly pointed to the left. Ninten's forelocks have a more spiky look, while Ness's are more rounded, although his American model has been altered to be more spiky-looking. While Ninten has red socks and blue shoes, Ness instead wears white socks and red shoes. Ness additionally carries around a backpack, whereas Ninten does not. It appears Ness's resemblance to Ninten was left as ambiguous by Shigesato Itoi intentionally as he intended for players to decide if they're the same character or different, he seems to have even suggested for players to think of them as the same.
  • Ninten's has been known by several different names in Japan: he was named Boku (which means "Me") in the instruction manual, and the novelization named him Ken. However, the name Ninten was used in Encyclopedia Mother and for his figure that released in Japan.
  • Ninten's name comes from the first six letters in Nintendo.
  • It is believed that Ninten is the only EarthBound series protagonist to never have a spoken line in Japan, as Ness is implied to be speaking in Magicant after defeating Ness's Nightmare, and Lucas speaks during his NPC roles prior to Chapter 4. However, he reads aloud when opening his Great Grandfather's Diary in all versions.
    • Along with this, the Mother 1+2 port of the game added the extra ending where Ninten does speak the following line:
Well, now that the Earth's crisis is finally over, I think I'll just lay down for a moment and Zzzzzzzzz
  • Ninten is the only main protagonist to not appear as a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • The name Ninten was used in manuals for other Nintendo media when referring to a character who the player names[14].
    • Additionally, Ninten is also an unused default name for Red, the protagonist of Pokémon Blue and Red, another game heavily involved with Ape Inc..
  • Ninten has the most known family relatives of the series' main protagonists, having six (seven if Giygas is counted, which in that case would make Giygas his adoptive grand-uncle) compared to Ness having three, and Lucas having four.
  • The E3 2015 trailer for EarthBound Beginnings erroneously entered steak for Ninten's favorite food instead of prime-ribs; steak is Ness's favorite food, not Ninten's.

  7. Listen well, Ness. I am about to tell you something so important that you should probably write this down.
Ready? You are a chosen one. Your destiny is not yours alone… It is part of a universal “system”.
  8. In MOTHER 2, Paula’s mom tells Ness not to worry about Paula, because “God is with her”. In EarthBound, this was localized to “She has a guardian angel, it seems.”
It’s not a big deal, and it’s pretty well-known that NOA didn’t want any religious stuff in their games back then, so the change is to be expected. I think the guardian angel line sounds better, anyway. But yeah, there’s no way NOA would’ve let a mention of the Christian God fly in their games back then.
But note that even though she mentions God in MOTHER 2, there are no real serious religious themes in the game. So don’t take this one change out of context and make a big deal out of it 😛
  9. In MOTHER 2, during part of Paula’s first prayer, she says something like, “Please, God, if you’re there…” or possibly even, “Please, God, if you’re real…”
In EarthBound, this religious reference got the smack-down and was trimmed to just, “Please…”
  10. The truth of the universe travels the cosmos like a grain and like a wave and speaks to the universes known as man.
  11. "PSI is a mysterious and useful power that can replenish your energy or even assist in your transportation needs. Using PSI will deplete your PP." MOTHER 3 Memo Description
  12. A miraculous stone that enables you to "concentrate" without using your own brain. This is accomplished just by your keeping this item. This is great because if you can't concentrate, you can't use PSI.
