Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sleep Manipulation (Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sense Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, & Paralysis (The more Ninten’s strength raises the less chance he has of being hit with Blindness, Poison and Paralysis), Information Analysis (If Ninten is put into a position where he checks himself there will be no effect), Power Nullification (Can resist PSI Block), Radiation Manipulation, Temperature Manipulation, Air Manipulation & Poison Manipulation (Can endure the Nuclear Reactor Robot’s explosion without suffering any adverse effects, which would include an intense pulse or wave of heat, light, air pressure, and radiation including a lack of oxygen and carbon monoxide poisoning)

Background
Ninten (named Ken in the novelization) is the main character and protagonist of MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings), the first game of the MOTHER series (localized as EarthBound series). He lives together with his mother, his sisters and his dog in a house in the northern outskirts of Mother's Day.
Ninten's name is derived from the first six letters of Nintendo. Ninten's primary choice of weapons are baseball bats, and occasionally the slingshot and boomerang. He is uniquely the only character capable of using PSI abilities to not learn any offensive PSI attacks, instead his PSI abilities mainly specialize in support and providing stat buffs to the main party.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Ninten’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |

Trivia
- Ninten's blood type is officially listed as type A[13].
- Fans have noted the resemblance between Ness and Ninten in the past. Because of their similar appearances many fans consider them to be the same characters, though it's directly confirmed they're different. Even though Ninten and Ness share many similarities, they have several differing qualities, mainly being visible in their official clay models. The brim of Ninten's cap is pointed to the left of his head, whereas Ness's points to the right, although Ness's brim is directed backwards in his American clay model, being slightly pointed to the left. Ninten's forelocks have a more spiky look, while Ness's are more rounded, although his American model has been altered to be more spiky-looking. While Ninten has red socks and blue shoes, Ness instead wears white socks and red shoes. Ness additionally carries around a backpack, whereas Ninten does not. It appears Ness's resemblance to Ninten was left as ambiguous by Shigesato Itoi intentionally as he intended for players to decide if they're the same character or different, he seems to have even suggested for players to think of them as the same.
- Ninten's has been known by several different names in Japan: he was named Boku (which means "Me") in the instruction manual, and the novelization named him Ken. However, the name Ninten was used in Encyclopedia Mother and for his figure that released in Japan.
- Ninten's name comes from the first six letters in Nintendo.
- It is believed that Ninten is the only EarthBound series protagonist to never have a spoken line in Japan, as Ness is implied to be speaking in Magicant after defeating Ness's Nightmare, and Lucas speaks during his NPC roles prior to Chapter 4. However, he reads aloud when opening his Great Grandfather's Diary in all versions.
- Along with this, the Mother 1+2 port of the game added the extra ending where Ninten does speak the following line:
|
- Ninten is the only main protagonist to not appear as a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series.
- The name Ninten was used in manuals for other Nintendo media when referring to a character who the player names[14].
- Additionally, Ninten is also an unused default name for Red, the protagonist of Pokémon Blue and Red, another game heavily involved with Ape Inc..
- Ninten has the most known family relatives of the series' main protagonists, having six (seven if Giygas is counted, which in that case would make Giygas his adoptive grand-uncle) compared to Ness having three, and Lucas having four.
- The E3 2015 trailer for EarthBound Beginnings erroneously entered steak for Ninten's favorite food instead of prime-ribs; steak is Ness's favorite food, not Ninten's.

- ↑ Listen well, Ness. I am about to tell you something so important that you should probably write this down.
Ready? You are a chosen one. Your destiny is not yours alone… It is part of a universal “system”. - ↑ In MOTHER 2, Paula’s mom tells Ness not to worry about Paula, because “God is with her”. In EarthBound, this was localized to “She has a guardian angel, it seems.”
It’s not a big deal, and it’s pretty well-known that NOA didn’t want any religious stuff in their games back then, so the change is to be expected. I think the guardian angel line sounds better, anyway. But yeah, there’s no way NOA would’ve let a mention of the Christian God fly in their games back then.
But note that even though she mentions God in MOTHER 2, there are no real serious religious themes in the game. So don’t take this one change out of context and make a big deal out of it 😛 - ↑ In MOTHER 2, during part of Paula’s first prayer, she says something like, “Please, God, if you’re there…” or possibly even, “Please, God, if you’re real…”
In EarthBound, this religious reference got the smack-down and was trimmed to just, “Please…” - ↑ The truth of the universe travels the cosmos like a grain and like a wave and speaks to the universes known as man.
- ↑ "PSI is a mysterious and useful power that can replenish your energy or even assist in your transportation needs. Using PSI will deplete your PP." MOTHER 3 Memo Description
- ↑ A miraculous stone that enables you to "concentrate" without using your own brain. This is accomplished just by your keeping this item. This is great because if you can't concentrate, you can't use PSI.
