I can't believe this... Why am I stuck here? What if I'm erased!? What the hell kind of game is this? This can't be right. Gaaah! I'm really stuck here? In Shibuya!?

Background

Neku Sakuraba (桜庭 音操 Sakuraba Neku) serves as the central protagonist and playable character in The World Ends with You.

In The World Ends with You, Neku awakens in Shibuya with no recollection of his past aside from his own name. He soon realizes he has been drawn into the Reapers' Game, a mysterious contest where he must partner with Shiki Misaki to endure its seven-day trial. As he navigates the challenges set before him, he gradually gains a fresh perspective on the world around him.

In NEO: The World Ends with You, Neku, now a renowned Legendary Player, resurfaces three years later, once again taking part in the Reapers' Game.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Neku Sakuraba’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Background
Little is known about Neku's early life, though he mentions being born and raised in Shibuya. His birthdate is April 21st, likely sometime in the 1990s due to his age.

In the This Day Ends with You! scenario, it is suggested that years before his death, Neku lost his best friend in a tragic accident. His friend was on the way to meet him at a mural when the incident occurred, leading Neku to blame himself. Overcome with grief and guilt, he resolved to avoid friendships, fearing they would only bring him down. While it remains unclear if this event took place in the main timeline, Neku's fragmented memories imply that the trauma lingered even after his amnesia, as he struggles to recall but still senses the emotional weight of the experience.

In the main universe, Neku's interactions with others appear to have brought him pain, as hinted by Megumi Kitaniji. Kitaniji, who has the ability to manipulate memories, tells Neku, "What have your dealings with other people brought you? Only hurt," suggesting he may have seen Neku's past firsthand. As a result, Neku became increasingly isolated.

Unbeknownst to him, Neku was chosen by Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu to act as his proxy in a test to determine whether Shibuya should continue to exist. Though not explicitly stated, it is implied that Joshua, who shares a distaste for humanity, sought to see if Neku—a human who also rejected others—could change and prove that humanity had potential. The Secret Reports describe Neku as possessing an exceptionally high level of Imagination, but also note that it is "discordant" and "unstable" due to "emotional confusion inhibiting the unity of his emotional self and physical body," likely a result of his past trauma.

On the day of his death, Neku visited his favorite place in Shibuya, the CAT mural in Udagawa. This mural, created by Sanae Hanekoma as a mass imprinting site, was intended as a gathering point for those with high Imagination. However, Neku became caught in a gunfight between Joshua and Sho Minamimoto. After repelling Minamimoto, Joshua fatally shot Neku, marking the beginning of his entry into the Reapers' Game, where he was given an additional Player Pin.

Week 1
On the first day, Neku wakes up at Scramble Crossing with no memory of how he arrived there. In his hand, he finds a Player Pin, which grants him the ability to hear others' thoughts. Shortly after receiving the day's mission to reach 104, he is attacked by frog-like creatures and is forced to flee. Unable to defend himself, he eventually encounters Shiki Misaki near the Statue of Hachiko. She coerces him into forming a pact, explaining that the creatures, called Noise, can only be fought by Players with pacts using abilities known as Psychs. After defeating the Noise, they proceed to 104, where they encounter Uzuki Yashiro, a Reaper who sends a Grizzly Noise to attack them. The attempt fails, leaving Neku frustrated and confused before he abruptly falls asleep.

On the second day, Neku and Shiki wake up at the Station Underpass, tasked with clearing Noise to escape. Experimenting with various pins, Neku discovers he can use multiple Psychs, an extremely rare trait. Outside, they meet Beat and Rhyme, who discuss the Reapers' Game with Shiki. Neku remains distant, claiming he doesn't need anyone, which angers Beat, prompting him to leave with Rhyme.

After completing their mission by purging the Noise from the Statue of Hachiko, Neku and Shiki encounter Uzuki again. She offers Neku an escape from the Game if he erases his partner, omitting that "escape" means erasure. Neku is manipulated into attacking Shiki but is stopped by Sanae Hanekoma, who intervenes just in time. Hanekoma stays briefly to give them advice on the Game and the use of the Fusion Pin.

On the third day, the mission requires Players to defeat the master of A-East. Beat and Rhyme complete the task before Neku and Shiki arrive. Shiki invites them to team up, and remembering Hanekoma’s words, Neku reluctantly agrees on the condition they "stay out of his way."

On the fourth day, Neku learns more about Shiki’s dreams and ambitions. While at Molco, he expresses irritation at having to follow fashion trends, and at one point, she adjusts his clothing to fix a button. Later, they are too late to save Rhyme from being erased. This loss deepens Neku’s emotional withdrawal, reinforcing his belief that friendships lead to pain. When Shiki confronts him for his lack of visible grief, he insists he doesn’t need or want friends, angering her. She calls him inhuman and no better than a Reaper.

On the fifth day, Shiki apologizes for their argument. Their mission requires them to clear Noise from Spain Hill, which they accomplish by using imprinting and Reaper Creeper to resolve an argument between Mina and Ai. As they discuss friendship and deception, Neku admits he is saddened by Rhyme’s erasure, and they agree that she deserved better. The Game Master, Yodai Higashizawa, appears to taunt Shiki and reveals to Neku that he is dead, sending him into a panic as he struggles to recall his death.

On the sixth day, Neku takes on a leadership role in their mission. When Shiki spots her friend Eri in Scramble Crossing, she runs off. Neku follows and learns the truth about her Entry Fee—her appearance. He reassures her, telling her she is fine the way she is and that she is lucky to have a friend worth admiring. This encouragement helps Shiki overcome her insecurity, strengthening her resolve to win the Game.

On the seventh and final day, Neku, Shiki, and Beat are the last remaining Players. Their mission is to defeat the Game Master, Yodai Higashizawa. After learning that Beat intends to take on the Reapers alone, Neku and Shiki rush to help him. The two confront Higashizawa and successfully defeat him, completing the Game. Shortly after, they meet the Conductor, Megumi Kitaniji, and discover that Beat is still alive.

Shiki is selected to return to life, but she protests, believing that Neku changed more and contributed the most. Kitaniji dismisses her objections, stating that the Composer's decision is final. Neku assures her they will meet again after he completes his next Reapers' Game. His original Entry Fee—his memories—is returned, though he still cannot recall his death. As the new Game begins, he is horrified to learn that his new Entry Fee is Shiki.

Week 2
At the start of Week 2, Neku wakes up in Scramble Crossing and realizes he needs a partner. He heads to the Statue of Hachiko, hoping to meet someone, but is attacked by Noise. Joshua steps in, making a pact with Neku, and together they defeat the Noise. Neku quickly grows frustrated with Joshua’s introverted and negative attitude, but the two manage to reach 104 to complete their mission. There, they encounter Sho, the Game Master of the week, which adds significant mental strain to Neku during their interactions.

On Day 2, Joshua suggests going to Cat Street, but Neku refuses, focused on finishing their mission. Neku participates in a Tin Pin Slammer tournament, losing, but they still manage to progress because another player, Sota Honjo, wins the tournament.

By Day 3, Neku’s mission sends him to Cat Street, which he later realizes was a trick orchestrated by Joshua. He meets Hanekoma, who upgrades his phone. Later, Neku battles Beat, a Reaper.

As the days go by, with no new missions from Minamimoto, Neku follows Joshua, who uses his upgraded phone to track down the Shibuya River. They also meet Sota and his partner Nao. During this time, Neku starts reading Joshua’s mind and uncovers some of his lost memories, leading him to believe that Joshua had killed him. On the fifth day, Neku confronts Joshua about this, and Joshua playfully asks what Neku would do if he were responsible for his death.

On Day 6, Neku finally receives a mission and learns of an outbreak of Taboo Noise. He has the option to save some of the Reapers, including Uzuki and Kariya, from the Taboo Noise. Unfortunately, he fails to save Sota and Nao, who are erased by Noise. Their deaths provoke anger in Neku, and he begins to understand the importance of empathizing with others and their struggles.

On the final day, Day 7, Neku and Joshua are tasked with defeating Minamimoto at Pork City. When they confront Minamimoto, Neku reads Joshua’s mind again and realizes that Joshua didn’t kill him but was instead trying to protect him from Minamimoto. After defeating Minamimoto, he launches a Level i Flare, and Joshua sacrifices himself by pushing Neku out of the way and taking the brunt of the blast. It’s later revealed that Joshua actually teleported to another world. Neku wins the game, but it is declared null and void by Kitaniji due to Joshua’s intervention. Neku is forced back into another game, with his entry fee carried over. This means Shiki’s life still hangs in the balance, along with a new entry fee for the next game.

Week 3
On the first day of Week 2, Neku wakes up and rushes to the Statue of Hachiko, hoping to find a new partner. He soon realizes that his entry fee was the entire group of Players, leaving him to face certain erasure. Just as all seems lost, Beat, now a Reaper, rebels and forms a pact with Neku. Together, they reach 104 to complete their first mission from the new Game Master, Mitsuki Konishi. On Day 2, Konishi gives them a single mission for the week: to find and defeat her.

Despite searching throughout the week, the two get sidetracked and can’t find Konishi. On Day 3, Uzuki takes over as Game Master for the day and challenges them to a game of tag. When she is tagged, Uzuki becomes enraged and fights them, but Kariya intervenes. On Day 4, Neku and Beat face Uzuki and Kariya together in battle and win a keypin as a reward.

As the week progresses, they notice everyone in Shibuya is acting strangely, frozen and sharing the same thoughts. The two are attacked by brainwashed Reapers, including a corrupted Uzuki and Kariya. On the final day, Neku and Beat head to the Shibuya River, where Konishi appears from Beat’s shadow. After a battle, they defeat her, but the game is not over yet. Continuing through the river, Neku is stunned to find Shiki alive, as their entry fee was returned due to defeating the Game Master. The trio passes by Minamimoto’s body and enters the Dead God's Pad, where they meet Kitaniji, who brainwashes Shiki with an O-Pin and fights them.

Neku and Beat fend off Shiki while battling Kitaniji, eventually defeating him. Neku saves Shiki by breaking her O-Pin, but both Shiki and Beat fall unconscious. Neku sets out to find the Composer, whom he believes to be Hanekoma. In a graffiti-filled area, Neku reflects on his newfound friendships.

In the Room of Reckoning, Neku learns that Kitaniji has recovered and that the Composer has been absent. Kitaniji invites Neku to join him in his mission to “save” Shibuya, but Neku refuses, believing that people can grow and change through conflict. Shiki and Beat arrive to assist Neku in fighting Kitaniji, who transforms into his Noise form, Anguis Cantus. After their victory, Neku faces Joshua, who absorbs Neku’s three partners and prepares to fight him. Neku forms pacts with his partners and defeats Kitaniji in his final form, Draco Cantus.

Following the battle, Neku learns the truth: Joshua did kill him, and the game between Joshua and Kitaniji was a twisted manipulation. Furious and betrayed, Neku confronts Joshua. Despite wanting to protect Shibuya, Neku can’t bring himself to shoot Joshua, ultimately letting himself be shot. However, Joshua spares Neku, admiring the trust Neku places in him.

Neku wakes up in the Scramble Crossing, restored to life in the Realground, surrounded by a crowd. Confused, Neku realizes he was tricked into believing Shibuya would be erased, and Joshua had only said he would decide Shibuya’s fate, not destroy it.

A week later, Neku walks through Shibuya, reflecting on how he has changed over the past weeks. He shares his thoughts on how difficult it was to learn to trust people and how that trust was broken. Neku is grateful for meeting everyone, which opened his mind to the world. He invites them to meet him at the Statue of Hachiko. Neku reunites with Beat and Rhyme, and later Shiki joins them, now free from Eri’s body. Though Joshua doesn’t appear in person, he watches from afar with Hanekoma on the rooftop of the 104 Building. Neku, now fully changed, takes off his headphones.

A New Day
Neku is mysteriously pulled back into the Underground alongside Beat as part of Expert Mode, tasked with escaping Shibuya. The two decide to team up once again. They quickly encounter the Reaper Coco, who Neku is wary of but reluctantly allows to follow them. As they progress, Neku grows suspicious of Expert Mode after meeting familiar faces like Shiki, Rhyme, Kariya, Uzuki, and Joshua. He notices that their behaviors are strange and out of character. Additionally, Neku begins experiencing unsettling visions of the near future, which he later discovers are tied to Tsugumi Matsunae. One of these visions involves Rhyme’s death, which Neku chooses to keep to himself. Unfortunately, this vision comes true, leading to Rhyme's erasure and Shiki's disappearance, leaving Neku devastated.

Soon after meeting Joshua, Neku reaches out to Hanekoma, who urges him to visit WildKat. Upon arrival, Neku uncovers the truth: the Shibuya he is in is a pseudo-parallel world created by Coco, a vast Noise construct. Neku and Beat work together to defeat the Noise, escaping back to the Realground in Udagawa. Just as Neku reunites with Shiki, who calls to ask if he wants to go shopping for materials to fix Mr. Mew, Coco suddenly shoots and kills Neku in front of a shocked Beat. As Joshua arrives with a gun, Neku’s body begins to fade from existence, and Coco flees the scene.

NEO: The World Ends With You (3 Years Later)
After Coco shot Neku in A New Day, as a precautionary measure, Joshua sent Neku from Shibuya into Shinjuku during its purification, presumably to have him handle the situation there and keep him isolated and safe from those who would target him for his abilities. However, due to bad timing, Neku was transported just after Shinjuku was purified.

Neku was unable to escape in this strange temporal space for about three years, and even Joshua's powers as an Angel could not rescue Neku. Neku described it as being stuck in a lonesome area with only the stray thoughts of people. In Shinjuku, Neku crossed paths with Coco and she explained she was only trying to recruit someone powerful to help save Tsugumi and Shinjuku from erasure. The two became friendlier and they investigated what was once Shinjuku. Coco made her way back to Shibuya a little earlier than Neku in order to check on Tsugumi and the rest of the city. Neku also heard that Shibuya was in trouble, prompting him to return.

On the first day of Rindo's Reapers' Game, Hanekoma picked up vibes similar to those emitting from Shinjuku just before its purification, suggesting Neku was nearly finished on his journey back to Shibuya. Considering how Neku does not notice the Gatto Nero label on his jacket, this implies he obtained these clothes very recently, possibly from Coco.

From the end of the first week up to the second day of Week 2, Beat is mistaken to be Neku due to his appearance being similar to Neku's own. Neku himself would make his true appearance on Week 3, Day 4, saving Beat and the rest of the Wicked Twisters from the Noise form of Sho Minamimoto (Leo Cantus Armo), to the shock of everyone there. Neku joins the Wicked Twisters thereafter.

On Week 3, Day 5, it is revealed that Neku has now befriended Coco, as her goal was to save Shinjuku and Tsugumi Matsunae. Neku also reveals he’s been seeing the same visions as Rindo and it is discovered these visions were sent from Tsugumi using her psychic powers.

On the Final Day, Rindo helps Neku meet up with Rhyme and Shiki, although neither can see or hear him as his existence is confined to the UG. In order to help save Shibuya, Neku has to sync with everyone in Shibuya. Neku helps the team defeat Phoenix Cantus.

Neku has another talk with Joshua at Udagawa where they discuss Joshua's reasons for sending Neku to Shinjuku. Seeing how Neku wanted to return to the RG, Joshua used a sample from a parallel world where Neku never went to Shinjuku and instead lived peacefully in the RG for three years in order to modify the space and memories around Neku so that he may once again reside in the RG without issue. Afterwards, Neku proceeds to reunite with Shiki at the Statue of Hachiko after his three year absence.

Personality

  • Introverted and Misanthropic: Neku begins his journey as a deeply introverted and misanthropic individual, often expressing a disdain for humanity. He views people as burdens and finds society's expectations and constant noise to be overwhelming. Neku prefers solitude, and his desire for peace leads him to block out the world with his headphones, using them as a barrier to avoid unwanted interactions. He believes that friends are nothing more than self-interested people who will eventually cause hurt, stemming from a past trauma where he lost his only friend.
  • Inner Monologue: Neku constantly speaks to himself in his head, when solving puzzles, figuring out situations and questioning things, rarely ever talking to anyone else, as he journeys he slowly starts talking more.
  • Clever and Insightful: Despite his negative outlook, Neku is highly intelligent and resourceful. His quick thinking and creativity allow him to adapt to the challenges of the Reapers' Game, often surprising others with his insight. He has a sharp memory and can recall details others would overlook, such as complex mathematical equations or scientific knowledge, which showcases his intellect. His perceptiveness also helps him encourage his partners to be their best, even if his approach is blunt and rough around the edges.
  • Gradual Growth and Empathy: As Neku progresses through the Reapers' Game, he slowly sheds his abrasive, isolated personality. Forced to listen to and understand those around him, Neku begins to open up and trust others, forming bonds with characters like Shiki, Beat, and Joshua. His journey teaches him the value of empathy and compassion, and he starts to care for others in a way that he never did before. By the end of his time in the Underground, Neku is a more selfless, compassionate young man, though his relationship with humanity remains complex.
  • Complex Relationship with Humanity: While Neku grows to understand and care for those close to him, his feelings toward humanity as a whole remain ambiguous. He is still distrustful of people in general and views society as a nuisance, yet he acknowledges the importance of listening to others and being there for those he cares about. Neku ultimately becomes more merciful and willing to defend Shibuya, even if his sentiments toward people are not entirely positive. His experiences shape him into someone capable of compassion, but he retains a sense of detachment from the world at large.

Relationships

Shiki Misaki

Neku at first starts off as an overall jerk being a jerk to Shiki despite her trying to be nice to him[2], though he gets called out for how he's acting with her, ultimately admitting he needs to work together with her as a partner[3]. As he starts talking to her more about her future ambitions, he learns how he didn't give her enough credit[4]. After learning about the truth regarding her body, Shiki being scared to get a second chance fearing she'll come back to life just to be jealous of Eri all the time Neku confesses that he likes her the way she is[5]. Later he talks her out of her funk telling her that she's her own person and to live for herself[6]. Right before facing the Game Master they both have a small talk between each other where Shiki thanked him for the seven days claiming he was a pretty good partner asking to meet up with him in RG[7]. Neku even ends up using her real name for the first time after they defeat Yodai Higashizawa[8]. After re-awakening in the second week, Neku notes he has to now win this game for Shiki's sake and his[9]. Their bond became so strong that once Shiki was decided to be the one to come back to RG, she protested against it claiming that Neku deserves to be the one to be brought back to life, with Neku telling Shiki that he'll be fine, convincing her to go back to the realground, with Neku promising to still be her friend even when he sees the real her[10]. Neku's bond with Shiki is so strong that she becomes his new entry fee for the second week of the Reapers Game[11]. Shiki also acts as an influence on Neku, being willing to hear someone out with their problems from remembering what Shiki told him about how people sometimes need a good listener[12].

Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu

Neku and Joshua's relationship starts off mixed with Joshua being condescending towards him[13], having no real care when he hears that Neku is fighting this hard to save Shiki[14]. He also attempts to make Neku look stupid[15]. Though during a chat they have after helping a small ramen shop, Joshua and Neku start to realize their ideologies match[16]. During another conversation on how well Neku knows Udagawa, Joshua notes he and Neku seem to have a lot in common[17]. Though this starts to fall apart when Neku looks into Joshua's mind and believes he killed him[18], later upon learning that Joshua is actually alive and went out of his way to enter the Reapers game, Neku lost it and started accusing him of being his killer with Joshua playfully teasing back that even if he did kill him, what can Neku do about it[19]. However he learns on the final day of the second week that Joshua did not in fact kill him and instead shot at Sho Minamimoto who was trying to kill him[20], with Joshua even saving him from Sho Minamimoto's level i flare, taking the blast himself[21]. This caused Neku to blame himself for Joshua's death[22]. He goes on to make sure to win the games, noting that Joshua bought him this chance[23]. It isn't until the last day that Neku learns the truth, that Joshua is actually the Composer who was playing a game with the Conductor over the fate of Shibuya where he was using Neku for his team killing Neku in order to use him as his proxy. With Neku' full of anger at Joshua, he suggests one last game where they fight in a gun duel and the winner gets to be composer and do whatever they like with Shibuya but even despite Joshua betraying him, Neku could not bring himself to kill a friend with this act of selflessness having Joshua decide to let Shibuya live[24]. Neku later has an inner monologue where he notes he cannot forgive Joshua yet but he still views him as a friend and wants to meet up with him again[25]. Later in NEO: The World Ends With You Neku and Joshua have a brief chat where Joshua notes he saved Neku after he was shot in A New Day with Neku with Neku not being fully convinced he did it fully out of the kindness of his heart and likely for an ulterior motive[26]. It's also revealed in Secret Report No. 23 that Joshua appeared to Neku and the others to stabilize Neku's mind by reminding him he was there, showing Joshua does care about Neku[27].

Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito

Initially he was a jerk to them too due to his distrust of others[28], though after they saved him and Shiki he loosened up on them, confirming the Rhyme that they will make it through the game no matter what, and no longer viewing them as his enemies[29]. Though after Rhyme's death, Beat became a Reaper in order to revive her, becoming Neku's enemy which saddened him[30], even with this Neku still protests against them fighting[31]. Neku does figure out that Beat may have had a reason linked to Rhyme for joining the reapers[32]. Beat later helps Neku as the Reapers play dirty making him the only player in the Reapers Game, forging a pact with him to help him out[33]. Beat later reveals to Neku that he joined the Reapers in order to find a way to bring Rhyme back to normal with him begging Neku to help him save Rhyme with Neku telling him that she's his friend too so of course he's want to save her[34]. Beat later opens up about how he and Rhyme died, blaming himself for her death with Neku reaffirming he's with him to save Rhyme[35]. Beat on the final day affirms to Neku that he's no longer his partner, but his friend[36].

Raimu "Rhyme" Bito

Initially he was a jerk to them too due to his distrust of others[37], though after they saved him and Shiki he loosened up on them, confirming the Rhyme that they will make it through the game no matter what, and no longer viewing them as his enemies[38].

Sanae Hanekoma

Hanekoma is aware from the beginning that Neku serves as the Composer's proxy and offers guidance to help him endure the Game. He calls out Neku for how bad of a partner he's being to Shiki, nearly killing her, telling him that he needs to trust his partner[39], being one of the key reasons for Neku's great change over the next three weeks. He supports Neku by providing a harmonizer pin and various upgrades for his phone. When Neku learns that Hanekoma is CAT, his admiration for him grows, though he becomes conflicted due to clues implying Hanekoma might be the Composer of the Reapers' Game.

In Another Day, Neku and Hanekoma share a strong friendship, with Neku expressing that Hanekoma is "the only man that I respect." During the main story, Hanekoma observes Neku and "tests his abilities" by summoning Panthera Cantus. After Neku prevails, Hanekoma hints that the time when Neku will aid him is approaching sooner than expected. In the Tin Pin world, Hanekoma is unfamiliar to most except for Neku. When encountered at WildKat, he warns Neku against reading any Secret Reports, a sign of trust that further underscores their connection.

Nao & Sota Honjo

He had a brief encounter with the two where they cheered him up and told him that it isn't his fault for Shiki being taken as his entry fee, it just shows how much he truly cares for her[40].

Coco Atarashi

Although at first it's revealed Coco was attempting to kill Neku[41], it is later revealed she did this in order to enlist his help with the problems in Shinjuku, becoming good friends with her[42]. Helping out with the Noise around the city as Neku and co. are getting ready to fight Shiba[43]. The group even notes that Neku must be one of the only few people Coco trusts, where even complaining to him she listened to his request[44].

Reapers are considered far stronger than players where they can erase them in a second[87], with the idea of a player trying to fight them being laughable[88]), Higher with Fusion. Even Higher with Level 3 Fusion (With Level 3 Beat Fusion, causes a massive tidal wave to attack all enemies[89]) | Moon level (Potency) (Can fight and harm Megumi Kitaniji after he's absorbed Shiki, Beat, and Joshua, where he can take the combined fusion attacks of the characters[90], where the level 3 Joshua fusion attack, brings down the moon to crash into the planet where the moon itself is completely destroyed[91]), Higher with Fusion. Even Higher with Combined Fusion (Through the use of the combined fusion, he completely defeated Megumi Kitaniji in one attack[92]) | City level (Potency) (Fought and defeated Dissonance Tapir, who made the entire city of Shibuya a noise[93]), Higher with Fusion. Even Higher with Level 3 Fusion

Players are able to scan the entire city of Shibuya being compared to having the radio on every channel at once[115])

Intelligence: Genius Intelligence (Could instantly answer what the square root of 3 is[116]. Noted by Shiki that Neku is able to use all of the pins, making him some kind of psych genius[117], along with calling him a genius[118])

Knowledge:

Powers and Techniques

Social Influencing (Talented Players can use their superior Imagination to inspire other humans[126]), Undead Physiology (Players are naturally those that are dead, trying to get a second chance at life through the reaper game[127]), Extrasensory Perception (Players can detect and see the Noise[128] despite them residing in parallel worlds[129] through the use of scanning[130]), Invisibility & Intangibility (Spatial; Players exist in an alternate plane known as "Underground (UG)" with the main reality being known as "Realground (RG)", both exist in the same space but are different planes[131]. This makes players unnoticeable to all people in main reality[132], not being able to be seen or head[133] being able to polish a statue in the middle of a busy street without anyone noticing[134]. They only appear visible in areas marked with special Reaper decals[135]), Contract Bestowal (Players can forge pacts with other players in order to take on the Noise, causing a light show when they forge allowing them to use pins to attack with their partner[136]), Telepathy (Player's natural pins enable them to hear voices inside of their head hearing the voices of many due to the pins[137]. Players can also focus in on a target to fully read what they're thinking about[138]), Information Analysis (The pins also give players a scanning ability allowing them to hear the voices of people around him[139]. The scanning ability also allows one to find and detect the Noise[140], who reside in parallel worlds[141]), Limited Dimensional Travel (Through scanning and interacting with a Noise symbol, players will be warped to the combat zone[142]), Imprinting (Players can use memes for imprinting, using it to send words directly into other people's minds, the meme imprinted into the person will affect their actions[143]), Subjective Reality (The psych manifestations of pins are determined by one's Imagination[144]. Given sufficient Imagination, any form is possible, be it a pin or a Reaper[145]).

Resistance to Telepathy & Information Analysis (Players are incapable of being scanned or having their minds read[146]), Mind Manipulation & Domination (Player Pins neutralize the effects of the red skull pins, which mind control users into all thinking the same thing[147] and has one's mind dominated by the Conductor's mind[148]) Abstract Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation & Physics Manipulation ((Players can fight and move around in imaginary number planes a parallel plane a fraction away from the world Noise inhabit[149], where the world is completely white and still[150], where imaginary numbers are imaginary units), Reality Warping, Information Manipulation, & Law Manipulation (Players can fight against the Noise who are able to destabilize the code of the entirety of the entire Shibuya region, with the code being a set of laws that binds together the Souls that make up all of existence[151]), Boundary Manipulation (Players are able to fight even in cases with a large amount of the Noise, where the Noise rapidly multiplying deteriorates the boundary between the RG and the UG, causing the boundary to eventually be lost and the city to be torn apart and purified[152]), Battlefield Removal (Forced Teleportation; Natural interaction with the Noise[153] warps one into a combat zone[154]. Noted that coming into contact with the Noise invokes the feeling of being "spirited away" as they battle on a unique plane[155]. Where players can chain a total of five of them before being forcibly warped into the combat zone[156]), Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; Those erased within the Gme disperse the mind and spirit housed within their flesh in the form of Soul, where they are only erased from visible existence, their Soul persists in the UG until gathered and tied together according to a new code[157])

Notable Techniques

Cross Combos

Cross combos are attacks where Neku and his partner alternate attacks between each other[312]. Cross combos cause the sync rate to rise, which once the SYNC reaches 100% the Fusion Pin can be utilized. Unleashing a powerful attack that hits all enemies at once. Cross Combos also act as a secret weapon against enemies that don't respond to normal attacks[313].

Other

Standard Tactics

  • The World Ends With You: Neku will use pins that best fit the situation, along syncing up with his partner for an ultimate attack.
  • NEO: The World Ends With You: Neku will employ similar strategies, being a far more experienced fighter and syncing up with his team for a massive groove attack.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • Neku's name is incidentally phonetically similar to the Japanese word for cat ((ねこ) neko?), which may relate to the name of Neku's favorite designer, CAT.
  • Neku's bright orange hair was designed for convenience, so the player could easily identify him in a crowd of pixelated characters[339].
    • In certain initial background concept artwork, he is shown with blond hair instead[340].
  • In the Japanese version of the Secret Reports for Another Day and A New Day's Secret Addendum A, Neku is referred to as "The Chosen One" (選ばれし者 ebareshimono?) by Hanekoma[341].
  • At 5'4", 15-year-old Neku is the shortest out of all male characters with confirmed heights.
  • Neku's birthday, April 21st, is the day before the North American release of TWEWY.
    • It is possible the 21st was chosen instead of the 22nd due to it being the 111th day of the year. This same repeating number sequence - known as an "angel number" - is found in Joshua's birthday, 11/1, a connection which may symbolize Neku's role as his proxy.
  • Jesse David Corti once said Neku's story is of him becoming more open minded and going from invulnerable to vulnerable, especially regarding his emotions and personality and allowing himself to experience hurt and weakness. This contrasts many stories where protagonists start as vulnerable and become invulnerable. While many protagonists gain strength and abilities, Neku begins the game as a psych master and loses all of his psych abilities when he returns to the RG at the end of the game.
    • Neku also loses the distinction of being a psych master in NEO as any Player is capable of using any psych regardless of their psych level.
  • According to Tatsuya Kando, Neku is a character who "prefers solidarity and isolates himself from the get-go", but still feels "a twinge of loneliness somewhere in his heart" and "maybe was always longing for some kind of interaction."[342].
  • It is unknown whether or not Neku can utilize absolutely every pin, as some pins are not accessible to the game player, which includes the pins that Neku's Partners use.
  • The fate of Neku's third entry fee (every other player in the third week) was not revealed.
  • According to an interview with Tatsuya Kando, Tomohiro Hasegawa and Takeshi Arakawa in the original TWEWY Guidebook, Neku believed the city would be erased when he lost the final duel with Joshua. His realization that he was in the Realground and that Joshua tricked him is what prompted his cry of, "WHAT THE HELL!?"[343]
  • In the Japanese version of the game, Neku's nickname in Another Day is "Dark Blue."
  • When Neku meets Shiki, she says "call me Shiki" and Neku thinks to himself, "I call this wack." Neku says this because in Japanese culture, calling people by their first name is seen as a sign of closeness and informality, and he is annoyed by how easily Shiki is trying to befriend him.
  • Neku and Shiki placed seventh on Nintendo Power's list of gaming's top couples in their February 2011 issue.
  • Neku's favorite brand is Jupiter of the Monkey, and Neku is quite fond of CAT. Jupiter of the Monkey's main store happens to be located on Cat Street nearby CAT's café, which ties Neku and Hanekoma together.
Neku's body by the graffiti.
  • During the scene where Neku is killed, upon close inspection, the graffiti above Neku shows a skeleton dressed similarly to Neku, with what seems to be reddish hair, blue clothes and wearing blue headphones. The Neku-like skeleton is looking directly at Neku's body. Under the skeleton is an image of a bull made of bones, which may represent Shiki who is associated with the D+B brand and may also represent her death. To the left of the skeleton seems to be an abstract skull which may reference a Player Pin, and underneath, yellow art similar to the Thunderbolt pin (one of Neku's first pins) which may represent psychs. The section of the mural may foreshadow Neku's time in the Reapers' Game.
    • It should be noted that the skeleton depicted is also featured on Black Jupiter while the skull is part of the design for Black Mars. The same graffiti also appears in Trail of the Judged.
    • The graffiti was also created by CAT (Hanekoma), an Angel with special powers. It is mentioned in the Secret Reports that his art is "imbued" with "command codes" which can affect the subconsciousness of those who view it, suggesting that the art and Neku's situation may not be simple coincidence.
  • In The Animation, Neku is left-handed[344].
  • At the end of the main story, Neku discards his headphones. However, they are present again in A New Day. The headphones do not reappear on Neku's character design in NEO: The World Ends with You.
    • The inclusion of his headphones in A New Day was likely so that the developers did not need to create new assets of Neku without his headphones.
    • The headphones were a part of Neku's early character designs for NEO: The World Ends with You. They would have appeared around his neck.
  • As of NEO: The World Ends With You, Neku's official color appears to be purple, the same color as several of his clothes and his phone. During the official TWEWY PR twitter account's character reveals, he is represented by the "headphone" (🎧) emoji.
  • In NEO, one of Neku's result screen lines is a direct quote of Hanekoma in The Animation: "Teamwork makes the dream work."
  • In a NEO guidebook, there were photos of Neku wearing his original outfit during battles, which does not appear in the final game. Putting the Legendary set on Neku does nothing.
  • In the first DS version, Neku is still internally referred to within the game's code as "boy", since his name was not decided at the start of development.
  • Neku coincidentally shares a battle quote with NEO's main protagonist Rindo that Neku says in the original game: when defeating a single Noise, Neku can say "Any last words?!" similar to Rindo, who says the same quote when doing so.
    • The same line was used by Neku in the original DS release, in which he would say this line upon catching a Puck with a 5x multiplier. This is most easily observed during the Final Boss battle or by using Holy Field.
  • Neku was designed by Tetsuya Nomura in both games. In the NTWEWY Artbook from 2021, Nomura commented that "it was difficult to surpass Neku's first design from the original game". In other artworks, Neku's beta design has a whiter palette to it and has a zipper in his white jacket.

Explanations

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of The World Ends With You

Status Effects
Name Effect
Immobility Immobility incapacitates the target, preventing any actions such as movement, attacking, or using pins, unless the pins are specifically designed to cure it. While immobilized, the target remains vulnerable to damage. It is symbolized by a white square with black lines.
HP Drain HP Drain gradually reduces the target's HP as a percentage of their maximum health. This effect excludes Noise attacks intended to deplete HP, like those involving jelly grabs. The icon is a white square with circular shapes.
Attack Break Attack Break cuts the target's offensive power in half. Several pins, such as Pavo Real's Poison Skull and Rapier Glance, Mus Rattus' Cornered Rat, and Hip Snake's Eyes Full of Hope and Eyes Full of Light, trigger this effect. It is represented by a white square featuring an 'A' inside a red arrow.
Defense Break Defense Break reduces the target's defense by half. The icon used is a white square with a 'D' inside a blue arrow.
Stun Stun, also known as "flinching," is a temporary status where the player or Noise cannot act for a brief moment after taking significant damage. Some Noise might be immune to this effect, while Neku and his allies will avoid flinching from minimal damage.
Knock-Back Knock-Back is triggered when an attack causes the player or Noise to be pushed backward. Neku and his partner will likely fall to the ground, but Noise are only thrown backward. This effect is similar to Stun, but with the added movement.
Airborne Airborne, or "knock-up," occurs when the player or a Noise is sent into the air by an attack. Neku and his partner will likely fall afterward, but Noise are only pushed back. This status can be exploited by Neku to juggle enemies.

  342. IGN Interview with Tatsuya Kando
  343. ーKando: After that, Neku and Joshua play a game of their own, right? Arakawa: Yes, and Joshua won. At that time, he said, "If I win, I'll decide [what happens to Shibuya]." Kando: Joshua won, but he decided to keep Shibuya alive. So Neku came back to life and returned to Shibuya. He was under the impression that the city would be erased because he lost. Since he was able to return to the real world, he realized, "oh, Joshua tricked me." That's why the words that came out of his mouth were, "WHAT THE HELL!?" Arakawa: At first glance, it looks just like the opening, but it's actually different. In the opening, passersby ignore Neku as he walks about, but in the ending, everyone surrounds him. In other words, everyone is aware of Neku. So Neku realized that Joshua had deceived him.
