~ Supercomputer’s analysis of Lavos
“
Amazing... It possesses the DNA of every organism that has ever dwelt this planet!
Now I understand. It lives on a planet for as long as possible, selecting the most desirable life forms, allowing them to advance and then harvesting their DNA. The young it gave birth to on Death Peak must have all of that DNA. Evenrtually they'll migrate to other planets, and repeat the cycle. It's a parasite! Sleeping within the earth all this time, stealing all our progress!
„
~ Lucca after witnessing Lavos' core and learning the truth
“
Let all that was once fade into oblivion! I welcome the end of existence. Embrace your destruction! It is inevitable!
„
~ Schala corrupted talking through Dream Devourer Lavos
“
It is no doubt but a matter of time before Lavos consumes the whole of my awareness. It was I, after all, who wished it—wished from the depths of my sadness and despair that all that was would be erased. The strength you wield now cannot free me. No, perhaps it is better said that no strength can. So as long as you lean upon the crutch of power, this world's sorrow can know no true end. Return to your own time now. Dwell not on this. Janus… thank you. But I am the girl I was no more. Live, and be strong. Farewell....
In order to survive, all living things in this world, fight desperately and devour those they defeat... Must one kill other living things in order to survive? Must one destroy another world in order to allow one's own world to continue? The wounded in turn wound and torment those weaker than they themselves are. There are only the killers and the killed... The sinners who are judged, and the victims that do the judging... What meaning is there to such a world?
„
~ Lavos speaking through the Frozen Flame and Dragon God
Lavos is the final boss of Chrono Trigger, an alien parasite which crash-landed in the year 65,000,000 BC It was named "Lavos" by Ayla, a word she made up from the root words "La" meaning "fire" and "Vos" "big" in the Iokan language.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Lavos’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!
Lavos came to Earth with the intention of draining its energy so that it could produce genetically enhanced spawn, which would then continue the cycle on other planets. In the North American version of the game, it is claimed once in the series that Lavos directly influenced all technology and life on the planet, evolving the planet's life forms to cultivate it, and make itself stronger. However, the line is absent in the Japanese version. Despite it originally just being in translation, in Chrono Cross it appears this actually is the case as a large portion of the game involves many layers of timeline events being controlled which all end at Lavos. In the original timeline, Lavos slept for millions of years, gaining power until 1999 AD. He was summoned in 12000 BC by Queen Zeal and the Mammon Machine. He emerged from the Earth in 1999 AD and put the world into an apocalyptic state. However, because of the interference of many of the characters, he was summoned at two other points in time of 12000 BC and 600 AD. While traveling in the year of 2300 AD, Crono, Marle, and Lucca see a video of the Day of Lavos which occurred in 1999 AD and decide to prevent it somehow. Magus is also after Lavos for destroying his home era in the year 12000 BC.
Lavos has three different forms. The first form is the outer shell, which resembles the Peluda, a mythical beast in French mythology. The second form consists of a large humanoid form with two arms. The third and final form is Lavos Core, consisting of three parts: a humanoid center, and two floating 'bits'. Apparently, the absolute core of Lavos is one of these bits, since it can revive its other parts and destroying it defeats Lavos.
While the natural dreamstone is a substance responsible for the first evolution of human beings from animal apes to sentient creatures, it is revealed in Chrono Cross that Lavos is responsible for the creation and advancement of the actual modern human species. Upon impact, a splinter of Lavos's shell broke off. This becomes the focal point of Chrono Cross, the Frozen Flame. Lavos is also the final boss in Chrono Cross, except in the form of the Time Devourer, the result of the defeated Lavos assimilating Schala in the darkness beyond time. Using the eponymous Chrono Cross, Serge successfully separated Schala from Lavos and destroyed the parasite once and for all.

Schala: When Lavos was defeated he was sent to the darkness beyond time where he pulled Schala into to fuse with her becoming the Dream Devourer and eventually the Time Devourer.
Lavos mere awakening causes people to be temporally BFR’d or to fight it in it’s own pocket dimension. It will also attempt to absorb or unify with the opponent, if it’s incapable of doing this, Lavos will survey through all time points and attempt to mimic bosses that it feel will be a threat to the opponent, if this fails it will proceed with it’s own moveset, spamming rains of destruction along with various status effect moves, if it’s defeated one will need to go within it to fight it’s body, who spams explosion moves, if the body is defeated it must fight the core who will pull one through time attempting to absorb them in it with them and strengthening it’s stats through the different time periods. If defeated it will go to the darkness beyond time where it will either return or fuse with Schala becoming the Dream Devourer.
Dream Devourer instantly opens up with devouring dreams from an alternate dimension and will attempt to absorb the opponent. If attacked it passively drains MP or HP. It also wishes to destroy all of existence so it will lead with complete destruction.
The Time Devourer will have the Dragon God fight for it first where the Dragon God will be using all of it’s elements and swapping between different timelines and changing it’s innate element, if it’s defeated then one must journey beyond time and space to face Time Devourer Lavos where he will use the strongest element attacks such as Omega Green. The Time Devourer’s wish is to also erase everything so it will lead with this too.
Weaknesses: The people he mimics he also share their weaknesses. If Schala is removed from Lavos and then all of the multiverse is conceptually merged then Lavos will be defeated once and for all incapable of coming back.
Key:Lavos | Dream Devourer | Time Devourer | Absorbing the Chrono Cross
Note: There has been some questioning on the validity of whether Lavos summoned alternate versions of himself or just revived parts of himself as the official bs Chrono Trigger character library notes the pod on the right as the "true form" of Lavos along with his ability to to revive parts of him being shown during his first phase. However this misses some key points regarding the way he revives the pods back. The way he revives his helpers is them simply coming back from nothing and continuing the fight, however the way Lavos "revives" the pods is opening up a time gate bringing them back, along with this the entire fight is based off the center shifting through time itself, with this what "Lavos true form" moreso likely means is that this is the true Lavos of the timeline and the others are alternative timeline Lavos'.
