Background

The protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei V is a young male high school student living within the city of Tokyo. The protagonist is a third-year high school student at dormitory-based Jouin High School, living an ordinary life. He is friends with Yuzuru Atsuta and Tao Isonokami. It has also been implied that he knew Sahori Itsukishima.

In the midst of mysterious incidents, as per the school's established buddy system, one day while returning from school through Shinagawa Station with his friends, the station was closed because of a nearby murder, causing a traffic backup. Searching for other students, Ichiro Dazai, who wandered off in a different direction in a hunt over rumors from monster sightings, and Yuzuru, who also went to look for him, he enters the Takanawa Tunnel, which suddenly collapses on them.

Having regained consciousness, the protagonist finds himself lost in a desolate and deserted Tokyo, a mysterious world called "Da'at." Suddenly attacked by demons, while running away, a mysterious man appears before him, and lends him a hand. In the process, the protagonist fuses with him and becomes a "Nahobino," a condemned being, using this power to fight back and wander through Da'at.

Eventually, he and Yuzuru reunite, later finding Ichiro who has been put under the protection of angels, and return back to real-life Tokyo safely, where they're awaited by Tao, who informs them about the other world: in addition to their world, there is also Da'at, a collapsed Tokyo where legendary demons awaken from the darkness and take aim at Tokyo and humans. However, there is an organization that fights these demons, Bethel, with Tao and Yuzuru being veteran members, and the protagonist and Ichiro agree to join their cause to protect Tokyo.

While returning to his regular school life, demons would suddenly break out of Da'at and into the real world, and the school would suddenly be raided by demons. Lahmu, in particular, captured Sahori Itsukishima, an acquaintance of the protagonist who has been bullied, using her vulnerabilities to confuse her and get her to ally with him. Because of this, she would kill her bullies in the confusion, although she would get kidnapped by Lahmu, although she never truly wanted to get involved in any of it. The protagonist and Tao both agree to rescue Sahori and the rest of the kidnapped students.

While retrieving the kidnapped students one by one with Bethel's help, and giving them shelter over at the Fairy Village in Da'at, they would eventually receive intel about Sahori and Lahmu's whereabouts, where they confront the demon. Lahmu would merge with Sahori in the process, and although Lahmu alone has been defeated, he would successfully merge with Sahori, luring Tao in to kill her. The protagonist would stand in between to protect her, but he'd get himself killed in the process, leaving Tao vulnerable for the fused Lahmu to take down as well.

In her dying breath, Tao would be contacted by a higher being, reminding her of her role as a goddess, getting her back on her feet, and sacrificing her life to revive the protagonist. In spite of Lahmu's attempts to retaliate, Sahori would snap out of the fusion and gain back control of herself, leaving him exposed. The protagonist would then approach and finish Lahmu off, killing him and sacrificing Sahori in the process, to her gratitude.

The protagonist would eventually help Bethel fight off the forces of chaos and slew a majority of their leaders, such as Ishtar, Surt and Arioch. After Bethel fractures, the protagonist finds and defeats Odin, Zeus and Vasuki to create the key leading to the Empyrean, where he can decide what he wishes to do with the throne - uphold God's will, save Tokyo or destroy the throne to have humanity fend for themselves. Depending if specific criteria has been met, the protagonist may also choose to use the throne to create a world for humans only, ridding them of gods and demons alike, but not before bidding farewell to Aogami.

• Aogami: Aogami is a mass produced Proto-Fiend model created by Bethel Japan to show that they can still fight, in spite of most of its gods bar one being forced into hiding due to having their power depleted in Armageddon. Aogami is an amnesiac entity that appears before the protagonist while he's being attacked by Daemons, destroying much of the horde during his entrance, and the two fuse together to become a Nahobino, a condemned being, in order to survive. While fused, Aogami guides the protagonist by voice, acting as a field guide and offers advice when dealing with demons, and warning him of the presence of particularly strong demons, as well as a telecommunications relay. Aogami was present for the appearance of Lucifer when the forces of chaos and Bethel led by Abdiel clashed at Tokyo Tower within what would be later called Da'at 18 years ago, and went dormant after Lucifer scattered himself to the winds, reactivating years later when the protagonist was attacked. Much later on, it was revealed that Aogami's true identity is Susano-o. A member of Bethel, his memory data was badly damaged in the war between Lucifer and the angels, leaving him largely amnesiac. His true self is hinted at by how the protagonist develops largely water and lightning-based abilities as a Nahobino, and the fact he shares his blue hair color and clothing color palette with Amanozako, his daughter. During the final ascent into the throne, Tsukuyomi refers to him (and his Nahobino hybrid with the protagonist) as a brother before telling them that he will show them no mercy.

Standard Tactics: The protagonists first course of action is to fuse with Aogami in order to become a Nahobino, once that is done, Nahobino is sort of a wild card, using his sword of light for various attacks and the various amounts of skills and magic he has at his disposal.

Weaknesses: If the protagonist perishes during battle, both he and Aogami will both be killed, erasing both of them. His demons are weak to mercuric sulfide. Sometimes has a weakness to light, though this is mitigated through "Resist Light" and "Repel Light" skills.

• The protagonist's hobby is reading.
  • The book the protagonist is reading in trailers is volume 5 of the Man'yōshū.
• How the Nahobino's hands allow one to create a sword of light though their fingers may stem from the battle of Take-Mikazuchi and Take-Minakata as spoken in the Kokiji; during their fight, Take-Minakata grasped Take-Mikazuchi's arm, in which Take-Mikazuchi morphed his hand into an icicle and then a sword, causing Take-Minakata to lose his grip. Take-Mikazuchi is also said to be borne of the blood from Izanagi's Totsuka-no-Tsurugi (which literally means "Sword of Ten Hand-Breadths") upon slaying Kagatsuchi upon his birth.

Most Megami Tensei Games Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. Most Megami Tensei Games Paralyze Paralyzed characters are unable to move. Unlike Shock, this often persists for more than one turn. Most Megami Tensei Games Stun Stunned characters have lowered agility and defense. Most Megami Tensei Games Confused Confused characters become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy, do nothing or flee in a panic. Most Megami Tensei Games Charm Character begins attacking their own allies or cast healing spells on the enemies. Most Megami Tensei Games Stone Prevents the target from moving. This persists even on the field and is treated as similar to being dead. In most games, if the protagonist is petrified, it triggers a game over. Shin Megami Tensei Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Megami Ibunroku Persona Devil Children series Rage Attack is increased, but the afflicted will attack anyone other than themselves as if they were Charmed. In the Persona series, Rage lowers the afflicted's defense and agility. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Persona 3 Persona 4 Persona 5 Down Character may get their turn skipped and they take more damage. Overlaps with other ailments. Persona 3 Persona 4 Persona 5 Hungry Hungry characters will become indecisive. On their turn, they will either not take action and receive a small amount of Almighty damage or attack an ally. DDS: Avatar Tuner Persona 5 Sick Capacity (how much the character can carry) is doubled. Shin Megami Tensei NINE Fly Renders the target 200% vulnerable to all affinities and reduces all their stats except Ag to 1. Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Sick Reduces affected character's outgoing damage by 25%, its evasion to 0 and increases damage taken by 25%. At the end of a turn with a party holding this character, there's a 5% chance that another character will be infected. Shin Megami Tensei IV Lost Flynn cannot summon or fuse the affected demon and is forced to reunite with said demon through an encounter. Shin Megami Tensei IV Brand DLC only. Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured. Shin Megami Tensei IV Sick Reduces affected character's outgoing damage by 25%, its evasion to 0 and increases damage taken by 25%. At the end of the party's turn or an individual party member's turn, if a party member is afflicted, there is a 5% chance that another party member will be infected. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Lost Nanashi cannot summon or fuse the affected demon and is forced to reunite with said demon through an encounter. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Brand Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured, but wears off randomly or automatically after battle. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalpyse Close Prevents a unit from using their magic. Represented by kissing and hearts when inflicted by skills. Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis Mirror Affected character cannot move, takes increased damage from physical attacks but reflects all magic. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Card Affected character cannot move, takes increased damage from Fire attacks, and decreased damage from physical attacks. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Bat Affected character steals HP from allies outside of battle. Can spread to allies. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Plague Stronger version of Poison that deals more damage. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Dance Affected character cannot move. Evasion is increased. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Tipsy Affected character may take a random action Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Drunk Affected character performs random actions Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku High Provides bonuses to all actions, but they also become random. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku Guilt Randomly-selected actions cannot be performed. Megami Ibunroku Persona Blind Hit rate and evasion dropped. Megami Ibunroku Persona Sick Loses HP at the end of the turn and when walking around. Works like Poison, but Sick is considered a different ailment in-game. Megami Ibunroku Persona Cloak Cannot be directly targeted by single-target attacks. Defense lowered and cannot summon Persona. Megami Ibunroku Persona Puppet Allows controlling a K.O-ed ally. Puppet can attack and use items, but cannot summon Persona. Megami Ibunroku Persona Beast Buffs all stats. Amount varies depending on the current moon phase. Megami Ibunroku Persona Illusion When a character is in the illusion status effect, his/her hit rate will decrease significantly. Persona 2 Possession Possession occurs when the demon inhibits the characters body. When a possessed character summons a persona, there's a high chance that the possessed character will attack instead. Persona 2 Despair Drains SP every turn, cannot move. Dies/Faints after 3 turns have passed. Persona 5 / Royal Rattled Cannot move, damage taken increased. Persona 5 / Royal Artist's Grace Inflict weaknesses to all affinities. Persona 5 / Royal Lust Affected targets may lose a turn. Persona 5 / Royal Wrath Affected targets have their attack raised sharply, but their defense decreased sharply for a turn. Allows free action. Persona 5 / Royal Envy Affected Targets may attack random party members with weapons when a support skill is used on anyone but the envied target for a turn. Persona 5 / Royal Ache After a successful hunt, the character that just ate might get affected by a stomach ache. Occasionally inflicted as a side effect from eating a Moldy Roll. This prevents the character from gaining any AP after the battle. Allies also won't get any AP from the consumed monster, if AP sharing skills are set. Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner Bat Reduces all stats and makes the affected character weak to Force. Wears off over time or when battle ends. Does not override passive skills that affect Force resistance. Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner Egg When the team holding the affected character has their next turn, the affected character takes a large amount of Almighty damage and a Maggot is summoned next to them.
