Once more, our family shares the fate of the Morris family. We are Lecardes, after all.
~ Stella to Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin

Background

Stella Lecarde is a key antagonist in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. She is the twin sister of Loretta Lecarde and the daughter of Eric Lecarde, a protagonist from Castlevania: Bloodlines. Stella and her sister were captured by the vampire Brauner, who turned them into vampires and adopted them as his daughters.

Stella is encountered twice as a boss throughout the game. The first battle occurs when she fights alone, and the second battle sees her and Loretta join forces, with the outcome of this fight affecting the progression of the game.

In one of the game's alternate modes, both Stella and Loretta become playable characters. In this mode, the backstory of how they were ensnared by Brauner is further explored.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Stella Lecarde’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Stella Lecarde was one of Eric Lecarde's twin daughters, alongside her sister Loretta. Unlike Loretta, Stella inherited her father's physical strength.

When Eric investigated the newly resurrected Dracula's Castle, he went missing, prompting Stella and Loretta to search for him. They eventually found him inside Brauner's room, where the vampire appeared behind them, turned both sisters into vampires, and cast a spell on them, making them believe he was their true father.

In the main game, Stella first confronts Jonathan and Charlotte in the Sandy Grave, where she largely antagonizes the duo for disrespecting Brauner. Later, she threatens to kill the two hunters by herself, only to be overpowered, briefly regaining her humanity. Jonathan attempts to kill her, but Loretta intervenes and takes Stella away. Before leaving, Stella drops a locket containing a picture of herself with "Wind" and Loretta. Jonathan and Charlotte take it to the Entrance, where "Wind" reveals his true identity as Eric Lecarde and that Stella and Loretta are his daughters, not Brauner's. This revelation leads to the use of a purification spell to cure the sisters.

As bosses in the Master's Keep dining room, if Jonathan and Charlotte defeat the Lecarde sisters without casting the Sanctuary spell, Brauner will spirit them away as the castle collapses, resulting in a game over screen. If the Sanctuary spell is used, the sisters are cured and regain their humanity. They express gratitude by offering to perform a ritual to unlock the full power of the Vampire Killer. If Jonathan accepts, he must defeat the Whip's Memory alone to unlock the Vampire Killer's enhanced strength.

After Dracula's defeat, the sisters reunite with Eric's ghost. Stella is particularly affected by his passing, collapsing to her knees and sobbing, feeling a greater sense of responsibility as the "older" sister compared to Loretta.

In Sisters Mode, Stella can damage enemies and objects by rubbing the stylus over them.

Personality

  • Emotional and Aggressive Nature: As the older twin, Stella is more emotionally driven and tends to act impulsively. Unlike her sister Loretta, who may be more reserved, Stella is aggressive and prone to rash actions. She shows this in her interactions with Jonathan, where she actively bickers with him, particularly during their encounter in the Sandy Grave. Her aggression is also evident in her disobedience toward Brauner, attacking Jonathan and Charlotte without his permission, defying his orders and her supposed role under his supervision.
  • Vampiric Superiority: After becoming a vampiress, Stella adopts a condescending view toward humans, considering them inferior to her. This sense of superiority is common among vampires in the Castlevania universe, and Stella's aggressive behavior and dismissal of human life reflect this attitude. As a vampire, she becomes far more ruthless and relentless, putting her vampiric nature above any remaining semblance of humanity.

Appearance

  • Looks: Stella has heterochromia, with her right eye turning a striking red, contrasting with her left eye, which is green. Prior to her transformation into a vampiress and after being cursed, both of her eyes were green. This unique eye coloration is a notable feature she shares with her younger sister, Loretta, who also displays a similar change in her eye color. Stella’s overall appearance carries a regal yet intimidating aura, befitting her vampiric nature.
  • Regular Clothes: Before becoming a vampiress, Stella's attire is not explicitly detailed, but she was seen alongside her twin sister Loretta, typically dressed in clothing fitting their human origins. Once cursed and transformed, her clothing likely changed to reflect her new identity, becoming more suited to her vampiric status. Her style, however, remains more focused on her aggressive, combat-ready demeanor rather than any ornamental fashion choices.
  • Special Clothes: As a vampiress, Stella adopts a more domineering presence. Though her outfit specifics aren't always highlighted, her physical transformation is evident through her vampiric features—her crimson right eye being the most striking change. Her overall appearance exudes both elegance and menace, reflecting her new status as a creature that looks down upon humans.

Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[53], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[54]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[55]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[56]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[57]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[58]. With their souls being completely free from time[59]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[60]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[61]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[62], becoming stronger when it's night time[63]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[64] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[65]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[66]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[67]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[68], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[69], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[70]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[71]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[72]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[73]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[74], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[75]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[76]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[77]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[78], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[79], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[80], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[81]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[82]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[83], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[84]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[85]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[86]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[87]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[88]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[89]), Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[90], with their souls being completely free from time[91]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[92], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[93]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[94]), Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[95], with their souls being completely free from time[96], with fate being a truth wound by time[97])

Equipment

Notable Techniques

  • Blood Draining: Vampires can bite and drink the blood of their victims. Blood acts as a source of energy and life for vampires and creatures of the night, an example of this being Red Skeletons who endlessly[237] regenerate[238], from any kind[239] of damage due to it absorbing blood[240].
  • Transformation: Vampires are able to turn into bats, wolves, fog, and other sorts of creatures as they please.
  • Super Strength: Vampires are incredibly superhumanly strong, even for the average creature of the night, being noted to be stronger than even Werewolves.
  • Super Speed: Vampires can move incredibly fast, to where all of them leave behind light projections due to how fast they're moving, while they can control their speeds even to approach speeds such as sound. They are normally beyond even other creatures in the castle such as the White Demon who moves at the speed of light at top speed.

Other

Standard Tactics: Stella utilizes a variety of offensive techniques in battle. She can land and swing her sword to create a shockwave in front of her, a move known as Cleaving Wave. Depending on the player's position, she may use Whirlwind, where she sends out energy waves with her sword. Another attack, Crescent Moon, involves setting crescent-shaped wind projectiles in the air that begin firing after being positioned. Stella's sword attacks include performing a circular slash that leaves a moon-like image or swinging her sword forward in a straightforward manner. Additionally, she can teleport to evade attacks, making her harder to pin down during combat.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • Both Stella and Loretta were voiced by the same actress, Mariko Suzuki, in the Japanese version of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
  • As Eric is also a skilled fencer, it was he who most likely taught Stella swordsmanship[264].

  137. WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.

“What have you misunderstood? I am Death. Human death only comprises a part of chaos. They can come back again as zombies or skeletons, but without a soul, dead bodies cannot be revived. And ----- there is no reason to perform that.”
  186. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.
“interesting…… So, death really exists! Thus I’ll use all my power…… to shatter that thing called [death].”

  195. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
    “……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
    Kill the distance-----
    Kill the sound-----
    Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
    “……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.
The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood."

There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children."
  214. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.

  219. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "“Uh……aa……Mi……chelle……”
That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."
