Doppelganger (Castlevania)
From The Codex
"Mature Content" | |
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these. |
Background
The Doppelganger is a recurring boss in the Castlevania series. This demon assumes the form of another being, often mimicking its victims. The concept of a doppelgänger originates from Egyptian mythology, where it is believed that encountering one's doppelgänger signifies the intent to kill the original and assume their role in life.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Doppelganger’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse The Doppelganger mirrors the main weapon and level of the character it is imitating. It wields the Banshee Boomerang as Trevor, the Axe as Grant, and Flames as Sypha. To defeat the Doppelganger, bring Holy Water if playing as Trevor or use the Lightning Bolt spell if playing as Sypha. Upon its defeat, the Doppelganger loses control of its transforming ability, rapidly cycling through all its forms before being destroyed. Castlevania Chronicles Castlevania: Symphony of the Night The Doppelganger appears twice in the game, each time taking the form of Alucard. Doppelganger10 is encountered early on as the second boss (third if counting Dracula from the prologue). It uses a Short Sword (9 ATT, Cut) and the Dagger sub-weapon (6 ATT, Holy). It can transform into mist or bat forms (15 ATT, Hit) before Alucard gains access to these abilities. Despite its abilities, it is highly vulnerable to status effects such as Curse, which can render its sword attack unusable temporarily. A shield can block its Dagger sub-weapon. Doppelganger40 is a stronger version found in the Reverse Caverns as an optional boss. This variant retains all the abilities of Doppelganger10, including Wing Smash (55 ATT, Hit), and gains access to additional equipment like the Gravity Boots and Leap Stone. It also uses the Rebound Stone sub-weapon (12 ATT, Holy), Terminus Est (35 ATT, Cut + Poison), and Stone Sword (5 ATT, Stone), though the latter is infrequently used. The effects of its Poison and Stone attacks can be mitigated with items like the Topaz Circlet, Medusa Shield, or Mirror Cuirass. Doppelganger40 is also vulnerable to these statuses, allowing players to exploit this weakness using the same equipment or weapons. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence The first encounter takes place in the Dark Palace of Waterfalls. Here, the Doppelganger mimics Leon Belmont's abilities, including a copy of the Whip of Alchemy. Its attacks include a quick step, a three-attack or seven-attack whip combo, a flaming leap charge, unholy water attacks aimed at Leon or its own feet, and a replica of Leon's Cross Blazer technique (Holy Water + Purple Orb), which creates a cross-shaped flame. In Normal Mode, it retreats into the sewers after being defeated. In Crazy Mode, Leon must face two Doppelgangers simultaneously, both using the same move set. The second encounter occurs in the Pagoda of the Misty Moon. The Doppelganger appears with a red palette swap and increased health. This version abandons the Whip of Alchemy in favor of flaming fist attacks. While it retains its quick-step ability, flaming leap charge, and unholy water-based attacks, it replaces its whip attacks with melee strikes, including a downward kick, a fast two-hit punch combo, a single punch, and a three-hit punch combo. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin The Doppelganger mirrors the player’s equipment and abilities upon entering the battle, though it does not use mastered skills. In Sisters Mode, the Doppelganger takes the form of Stella and Loretta, mirroring their boss mechanics from the main game. In Old Axe Armor Mode, it mimics the player’s Old Axe Armor form rather than the standard enemy variant. Upon defeat, the Doppelganger drops a Magic Crystal, the only boss in the Nest of Evil to do so. Following its defeat in the Normal campaign, players can proceed to claim the Greatest Five Dual Crush, the game's most powerful Dual Crush. |

Powers and Techniques
Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[9], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[10]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[11]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[12]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[13]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[14]. With their souls being completely free from time[15]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[16]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[17]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[18], becoming stronger when it's night time[19]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[20] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[21]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[22]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[23]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[24], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[25], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[26]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[27]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[28]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[29]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[30], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[31]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[32]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[33]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[34], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[35], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[36], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[37]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[38]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[39], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[40]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[41]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[42]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[43]).
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Vampires are considered far larger threats than the standard creature of the night monsters[74]), Stealth Mastery (Vampires are able to attack stealthily in search of human blood[75]), Disguise Mastery (Vampires will sometimes disguise themselves[76] as villages in order to get near one[77]), Immortality (Ageless; Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[78], with Mathias noting he has eternal life[79]. Aeon notes that vampires exist for eternity[80]. Walter is noted to be a vampire that has eternal life[81]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[82]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Vampires will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[83]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[84]. With their souls being completely free from time[85]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[86]), Free Will (Vampires do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[87], defying God's decree[88]), Enhanced Senses (Vampires can smell that Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez smell different from the usual adventurer[89]), Surface Scaling (Vampires can stand on ceilings[90]), Flight (Vampires can either naturally levitate grow wings to fly[91], turn into a bat[92], or into mist[93]), Immersion (Vampires can infuse magic into paintings to increase their power[94]), Empowerment (Vampires are loved by the night, making them so powerful that vampires like Walter Bernhard never been defeated before Leon Belmont gained the vampire killer[95]. Noted by Leon that the night should help Joachim Armster as well due to him being a vampire, with the only reason it doesn't is due to Walter holding the ebony stone[96]), Resurrection (Even if one somehow manages to kill a vampire, they will someday come back to life despite them being killed due to being immortal[97]), Transformation (Shapeshifting; Vampires can assume the shape of a wolf, a bat or fog[98]. Vampires can disguise themselves as huamns[99]), Teleportation (Vampires possess the ability to teleport freely[100]. Even non-threatening vampires such as Rosa, fade out from view[101]), Power Suppression (Vampires can submerge their own vampiric powers if needed[102]), Life-Force Absorption (Vampires can consume one's lifeforce[103], allowing them to heal themselves through biting into a victim[104]), Vampirification (Vampires can turn others into vampires[105], Walter turned Rinaldo's daughter into a vampire[106]), Invisibility (Vampires possess natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[107]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[108]), Animal Manipulation (Bats serve under the control of vampires[109], being freely spawnned by any vampire[110]), Cloth Manipulation (A vampire's blood can transform clothes, such as Hector combining a vampire's blood with a prince's clothes to get Dracula's clothes[111]), Electricity Manipulation (Vampires can sometimes have electricity form around them as they transform[112]), Soul Manipulation (The candles in Castlevania are people's souls that were taken by Death or by vampires[113]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Vampire's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[114]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[115]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[116], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[117], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[118], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[119]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[120]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[121], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[122]), Law Manipulation (Vampires can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[123]), Power Modification (Vampire's alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[124]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[125]).
Resistance to Temperatures (Vampires bodies turn cold, with them feeling no heat[126]), Biological Manipulation (Vampires biological functions are no longer required for them[127]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[128], with their souls being completely free from time[129]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[130], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[131]), Death Manipulation ("Death" loses all meaning for Vampires, as they[132] defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[133]. Where even if one "kills" a vampire they will simply just come back as they are not bound to death[134]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[135], with their souls being completely free from time[136], with fate being a truth wound by time[137]), Law Manipulation (Vampires defy God's decree that life should be limited, and exist for eternity[138])
Escape Prevention (Upon entering the forest Leon, Rinaldo noted that Walter made it so Leon could not leave[144]), Darkness Manipulation (Due to the Ebony Stone[145], his demonic power allows him to make it eternally night in the forest under his control[146]), Energy Absorption (Walter can get hearts out of objects and enemies, where hearts are a measure of one's stored energy, thus one is absorbing energy when gaining hearts[147]), Domination (Walter has demons under his control[148]), Sealing (Walter sealed away the Forgotten One due to an enormous uncontrollable power it had[149]), Blessed (Noted that Walter is beloved by the eternal night[150]), Teleportation (Teleported Sara to his side[151]), Electricity Manipulation (Walter uses electricity to appear before Leon[152]), Telekinesis (Telekinetically returned Sara to Leon[153]), Sleep Manipulation (Walter can put one to sleep[154]), Invulnerability (Metaphysical Invulnerability) & Forcefield Manipulation (Passive; Walter is completely immune to attacks from Leon[155]), Light Manipulation & Teleportation (Can create pillars of light that he teleports around[156]), Energy Projection (Can shoot out energy projectiles[157]), Homing Attack (Walter can shoot out energy projectiles that home in on the target[158]), Explosion Manipulation (Can shoot out orbs that explode on impact[159]. With Demonic Megiddo, can release a massive blast of energy that explodes outwards[160]), Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; When using Demonic Megiddo, Water transforms into his stronger demon form[161]), Fire Manipulation (Conjures multiple pillars of fire underneath the target[162])
Resistance to Extreme Heats (Unaffected by moving so fast he catches on fire[405]), Extrasensory Perception (Dark Lords are incapable of being sensed by the likes of Death[406]), Attack Reflection (His reincarnation can attack and harm Graham Jones, where he's absorbed the power of the castle, and inherited Dracula's powers[407], where Dracula's mere rib bone reflects all projectiles back[408]), Darkness Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (Dracula has a natural resistance to the darkness element[409]. Dracula's mere ribs protects from the powers of wickedness[410]), Holy Fire Manipulation (Can take holy water hitting him, with it only momentarily having him cry out in pain, before emerging just fine[411]), Curse Manipulation (Dracula's mere heart clears curses[412]), Time Manipulation (Noted that the stop watch has no effect on moving platforms in the castle and most bosses[413]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[414], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[415]), Sealing (Dracula's power allowed Soma to easily repel away a multi-layered seal called aurora a multilayered rectangular barrier ritual that was supposed to isolate Soma and then remove Dracula's powers from him[416]. Even while greatly weakened, when the Aurora was used on Dracula, he greatly resisted it, requiring two master magicians to affect him[417]. Dracula's power is so great that very few magical items can truly hold his magic within a seal, requiring the usage of an entire library worth of grimoires in order to truly seal away just his magic alone[418]. The only reason Brauner was able to seal away Dracula was due to him not reviving completely otherwise his seals would be easily broken by Dracula's power[419]), Fire Manipulation (Dracula is naturally strongly resistant to fire based attacks[420]), Electricity Manipulation (Dracula is naturally strongly resistant to thunder based attacks[421]), Poison Manipulation (Dracula is naturally immune to poison based attacks[422]), Spatial Manipulation (Brauner using Dracula's power spatially segregated Dracula from the castle[423]), Soul Manipulation (Dracula's soul was put in a vessel, yet despite many organizations efforts, their glyphs couldn't even scratch him[424]), Power Modification, Information Manipulation, Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Dracula's magic and powers have no limits posed on it from the grimoires where heroes summoned from the catalogue are unable to stray too far from its contents and have limited actions they can do having summoned heroes have their powers greatly limited from their true strength[425]), Fate Manipulation & Death Manipulation (Death serves Dracula with unfailing loyalty[426], where Death is noted to govern the fate of death[427], being noted to have the power to govern the end of all living things[428], and can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[429]. Death decides who lives and who dies[430]), Immortality Negation (The Vampire Killer is unable to strip Dracula of his immortality whereas the Vampire Killer can render immortal skeleton death gods like Death, mortal, having him bleed from attacks, giving him mortality as shown when Death dies to his own scythe cutting off his head and having blood spurt out, something not possible as a skeleton[431], and can kill Death to the point that he requires Mathias to survive in order for him to rise from the dead[432])
Resistance to Time Stop (Areas in the Castle are unaffected by time being stopped, and blocks and objects will still fall[524]. Noted that the stop watch has no effect on moving platforms in the castle[525]. Christopher stopping time on an elevator does not stop the elevator from moving[526], machinery still moves along[527], and floating objects still float[528]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[529], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[530])
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (The Belmonts are known as the most powerful and renowned vampire hunters within the world of Castlevania[532]. During and before Trevor's time[533], the Belmont's were feared because of their immense power[534]), Acrobatics (Due to Belmonts superhuman nature, they possess very athletic and acrobatic bodies, examples include Richter easily flipping over Death's scythe attack while also jumping around and fighting Death while on a moving horse carriage[535]. Richter also showcases this with his boss fight in Dracula X where he must jump across platforms while also fighting against Dracula[536]. Julius showcasing extreme acrobatic leaps to reach the top of a castle drawbridge[537]), Genius Intelligence (Belmonts are trained and some of the best users of various sub-weapons, which in Castlevania requires one to have a high intelligence to be able to do[538]), Martial Arts (Trevor left behind all of his fighting techniques to each new Belmont clan member and Morris clan member[539]), Weapon Mastery (No matter the Belmont, they have all showcase a natural gift in using weapons, with Christopher showcasing the tools of his family's destiny are always the axe, dagger, cross, & stop watch[540]. Many of the famous Belmont weapons were left behind by Trevor[541], with him noting them to be the axe, dagger, cross, holy water, and stop watch[542]), Sheer Will (The Belmonts are all ones with strong courage and willpower, where having a strong constitution dictates and influences how fast one can recover from status effects such as poison or curse[543]. Belmonts are pillars of strength, willing to keep fighting even when weakened greatly and having their existence slowly erased from history[544]. Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeat Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmont's strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[545]. The Belmonts will should be greater than even the likes of the Fernandez/Belnades Clan, including Camilla Fernandez, where its noted she had great spirit and struggled mightily against the curse before she became a vampire[546]), Aura (Belmonts release a glow of aura around them[547], that envelops their body[548]), Non-Standard Interaction (Metaphysical Interaction; Belmonts can interact with ghosts with their whips and sub-weapons[549]. Elemental Interaction; Belmonts can interact with enemies that are the mist itself with their whips and sub-weapons[550]. Belmonts can interact with creatures of the night made of sand[551]. Can interact with creatures of the night made of fire[552]. Can fully disperse and destroy water bubbles instead of the attack just going through it[553]. Blood Interaction; Can harm and kill enemies made of blood[554]. Abstract Interaction; Belmonts can interact with and kill Death[555], where Death is death, being the absolute presence, the awe, the religion, and the dark god[556]. He refers to death itself as him[557]. Noting that he is completely death and human death is only a part of Chaos[558]. Olrox when seeing Death fight serious notes that he senses the overwhelming existence of death and states that death really exists[559]), Nullification (Pain Immunity Nullification; The Belmonts can make the White Dragon visibly react to pain[560] and scream out in pain, where it is an immortal being immune to pain and suffering[561]. Abstract Nullification; The Belmonts can nullify and destroy the scythes from Death, who can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[562]. Death decides who lives and who dies[563]), Immortality Negation (Ageless & Life and Death Immunity; The Belmonts can render immortal skeleton death gods like Death, mortal, having him bleed from attacks, giving him mortality as shown when Death dies to his own scythe cutting off his head and having blood spurt out, something not possible as a skeleton[564]. The Belmonts can kill Death to the point that he requires Mathias to survive in order for him to rise from the dead[565]. Death is a being unconstrained by mortality[566]), Resurrection Bypassing (The Belmonts can kill zombies[567], who are corpses brought back to life from the power of hate[568]), Enhanced Senses (Belmonts such as Trevor could sense the power of a Belmont within Simon and also could tell he did not seem to grasp the fundamentals of combat in Judgment's time rift[569]), Extrasensory Perception (Belmonts can feel others being in an area, such as Simon Belmont being able to feel Trevor Belmont is in the time rift[570]. Leon could sense and feel that Joachim Armster was a vampire[571]. Leon could sense the rage from a Vampire Killer[572]. Trevor could sense a bad omen approaching[573]. Christopher Belmont felt a "chill" upon Dracula's return[574]. Belmonts such as Juste could sense Death's overwhelming power[575]. Belmonts such as Juste could sense the aura of the two different layers of the castles[576]. Belmonts can see beings like the Bitterfly, a mutated insect, visible only to magicians[577]. Julius could sense the dark powers within Soma Cruz[578]. Julius could sense Dracula's powers at work within Graham, though could tell from sensing Graham that he very likely was not Dracula[579]. Julius when fighting Soma could feel the evil spirit within Soma but also Soma's good spirit[580]), Precognition (Premonitions; Belmonts can have future premonitions through their dreams, such as Christopher dreaming about Dracula stealing his son and turning him evil, far before he even had one[581]), Magic (Due to coming into contact with Rinaldo and gaining the whip, Rinaldo granted him a magic amulet[582]. where Leon gained magical energy that would naturally be passed down to all of his descendants[583]. Belmonts such as Julius naturally have magical powers due to this[584], along with Juste having magical powers deriving from the Fernandez (Belnades) family[585]), Principle Manipulation (Magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[586]), Afterimage Creation (Belmonts can envelop themselves in an aura of light that allows them to move so fast, their light projections cannot keep up[587]), Glyph Creation & Portal Creation (The Belmont blood acts as a key to[588] the infinite corridor[589]), Empowerment & Holy Manipulation (Belmonts can amplify weapons, Leon holding The Whip of Alchemy had it become more powerful then before, with Rinaldo stating that the whip fits Leon better then it fits him, despite him being the one to make the Whip of Alchemy[590]. Medusa even noted that it wasn't so powerful before believing the whip gained its complete form[591]. Belmonts can call upon the power of the light and use it to amplify their strength to be stronger and faster[592], this is also shown with Trevor Belmont's ultimate in Castlevania Judgment[593]. The Belmonts can use their stored energy (hearts) and transfer it into subweapons to make regular weapons as strong as they are along with magically enhancing them[594]), Invulnerability (Belmonts have an inborn self-defense ability known as "Burning Mode" which makes them invincible and raises their status to twice the normal level[595]), Statistics Boost (Belmonts get stronger from hearing of someone's grief, wanting to help them[596]), Reactive Power Level (As Dracula grows stronger each time he revives, the Belmonts have had to keep up, evolving to be powerful even without the strength of the Vampire Killer[597]), Sealing (Metaphysical Sealing; Belmonts can capture the spirits of enemies equal or greater to an area boss and use their abilities from their soul[598]), Nullification (Sealing Nullification; Belmonts such as Julius can completely destroy barriers, however depending on how strong the barrier is, they may have no more energy to fight[599])
The Castle Abilities Include: Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[654], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the clouds rotate at a fast speed[655]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[656]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[657]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[658]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[659]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not effect it until the seal is gone[660]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[661], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[662]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[663]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[664]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[665]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[666]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[667]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[668]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[669]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[670]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[671] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[672]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[673]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[674]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[675]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[676]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[677], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[678] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[679], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[680], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[681], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[682], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[683]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[684]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[685], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[686]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[687]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[688], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[689]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[690], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[691]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[692])

Power Nullification; Julius sealed the Vampire Killer within Dracula's castle in order to rip away Dracula's soul and magic[718]. Energy Nullification; Should be comparable to other magical whips that have been used to negate Dracula's Demonic Megiddo[719]. Electricity Nullification; Can completely disperse and nullify electricity attacks[723]. Seal & Forcefield Nullification; The Vampire Killer can easily break open barrier seals[724]. The whip can have fire burst around the enemies even without them dying[741]. Causes even objects like coffins to burst into flames[742]. This is even shown in Lament of Innocence, once Leon has the vampire killer[743]. This is even shown in graphic novels such as Belmonts Legacy[744]), Explosion Manipulation (Trevor swinging the whip at the ground caused the ground to explode[745]), Memory Manipulation & Soul Manipulation (The Vampire Killer holds the souls of the many Belmonts who once wilded it[746], the Vampire Killer could also possibly hold the souls of Belmonts who have not even touched it yet, as it was originally planned to have it summon Julius from the future but they ultimately didn't go with the idea), Lifeforce Absorption (Even if the The Vampire Killer accepts one as its master, it still chips away at one's life force with every lash[747]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[1145]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[1146]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[1147], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[1148]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[1149]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[1150]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[1151]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[1152]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[1153]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[1154]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[1155]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[1156]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[1157] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[1160]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[1161]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[1162]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[1163], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[1164] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[1165], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[1166], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[1167], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[1168], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[1169]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[1170]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[1171], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[1172]. Notable Techniques
- Form Mimicry: The Doppelganger is a demon who assumes the form of its intended victims before killing them[1384], gaining all of their strengths, Weaknesses, abilities and resistances.
Other
Standard Tactics: The Doppelganger will assume the form of the character it takes and copy their tactics.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[1385]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[1386], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[1387]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[1388].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[1389]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[1390]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[1391]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[1392]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[1393]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[1394]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[1395]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[1396].
- Unique Weaknesses: The form it takes will have the weaknesses of the character.
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[1397]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[1398], a knight who has natural holy powers[1399]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[1400]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[1401].
Trivia
- The Trevor Belmont Doppelganger in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse will throw a red version of the Banshee Boomerang. However, in the Japanese version of the game, it throws the regular Banshee Boomerang that Trevor uses.
- Besides the two Doppelganger boss fights that take place in Symphony of the Night, the player also faces yet another boss battle midway through the Reverse Colosseum where they must fight fake versions of Trevor, Sypha and Grant. However, unlike the Doppelganger, who is a creature that can take the form of other living beings, these actually are a trio of zombies impersonating those characters.
- In Symphony of the Night, if Doppelganger40 is defeated before Doppelganger10 (commonly done in Richter Mode or Maria Mode, or via sequence breaking), the latter will not appear[1402]. This implies both are the same Doppelganger, Doppelganger40 being a leveled-up version of himself, similar to how Alucard himself can level up (as hinted by the "LV" in the Doppelganger's Japanese name).
- However, if this is done, the Doppelganger10's Life Max up will be unobtainable.
- The rotating circular gate in the Outer Wall from where Doppelganger10 comes out in Symphony of the Night is a replica of the Aztec sun stone, mainly differing on their central parts, where the original slab has the face of an Aztec solar deity.
- Doppelganger40 is fought at the Reverse Caverns, the castle opposite of the normal castle. It is possible the portal took the Doppelganger to the Reverse Castle after his first defeat. Similar portals are seen in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, transporting characters between Castle A and Castle B.
- Doppelganger10's boss fight only triggers when entering the room from the left side. Entering the room from the right (via sequence breaking) will not load the boss.
- Shadow, a boss which appears in Harmony of Dissonance, is basically another type of doppelganger. However, instead of copying and adopting the form of the protagonist, it takes the form of a Black Panther, a Moth and an Evil Sword. It also shares the trait that its transform ability goes out of control upon defeat.

When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? - ↑ WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?
KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea. - ↑ Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Prologue Stage 4

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
“……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
Kill the distance-----
Kill the sound-----
Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
“……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.

Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed. - ↑ Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

“Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
However-----
Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul." - ↑ Haunted Castle Revisited Dominus Collection

“What have you misunderstood? I am Death. Human death only comprises a part of chaos. They can come back again as zombies or skeletons, but without a soul, dead bodies cannot be revived. And ----- there is no reason to perform that.” - ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.

Hammer sensed that the air between the two suddenly felt heavy so he laughed out while holding a weapon.
It was a whip that was soaked in blood in some places.
“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
“Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
----- No way……

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.

The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood." - ↑ Castlevania Judgment Death True Story Mode

Even though it is still far away, their bodies seemed to squeal [run away].
There was definitely no room for doubt. It is certain that the [castle] exists at the back of the mountains. The church’s greatest vampire hunter, Julius Belmont must be contacted. However, the conversation jumped into the matter of the disappearance of several village children." - ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "A drawbridge suspended from the main gate is seemingly welcoming Michelle’s arrival.
